Heath usually hated dancing, but he found that, to his own surprise, when he focused on his friends, he didn't fear the embarrassment. Despite his newfound confidence, he was glad when the impromptu dance party ended. He sat down on the floor next to Claudine, turning his full attention to the professor as he spoke. He kept waiting for everything to piece together, but the more he heard, the more confused he became. Asgard? Gods? Giants? Horses? He had no idea how any of it related to dancing or Ancient Runes!

The only thing he could figure was maybe there was no reason that the professor asked them to dance. Maybe he'd tricked the students like Loki tricked the horse in the story... distract them with something meant to be fun to keep them from getting more important work done. But that probably wasn't true. Merlin, he hoped that wasn't true! He'd had enough of getting tricked by adults, thanks.

Heath may have mustered the confidence to dance, but that confidence didn't extend to offering wrong answers. At a loss, he kept quiet for now.

Ivy grinned when Violet finally joined in on the dancing, but then it wasn't long before that part of the lesson was being wrapped up and they were moving on.

Moving on to a story from Norse mythology in fact. One that she was certain she'd heard before from Cooper, but she still sat down and tried to pay attention anyway. She'd heard a lot of mythology stories from him over the years, so she was a bit fuzzy on the details of this particular one.

As for what it had to do with the dancing from before, she thought the answers some of her classmates had given were pretty good. Something to do with runes enhancing or otherwise helping with movement seemed likely. The professor had said the horse was swift, after all. Maybe they'd be able to use runes to make them move really fast too.

So she had no answer of her own for now, just sitting quietly and listening to the others.

All of the sudden the dancing was OVER, and V pouted at her little gal!group. Lisa, Remy, and Ollie. She wasn't even paying a SINGLE LICK of attention to anything Lisa said but just viiiiiibed with the music until it ended, and she crossed her arms over her chest.

And immediately she was lost. There was a reason she didn't like Ancient Runes. Because...well, it was hard for V, and she didn't like when things were hard for her.

The story was long, V lost interest and started counting the strands of hair on Daniel Yoon's head that were out of place, and soon he was asking them questions about things she hadn't kept up with and hadn't done the reading on. So she remained quiet. Best not to look like a complete fool.

"Maybe you had us dance because you're trying to start a dance crew and were trying to recruit us. I know that doesn't have to do with runes, but that's the only guess I have," she said as shruuuuuugged.

Some of them he was jealous of how clearly they were able to just.. have fun and not worry about what other people thought. And then others had such large groups of friends he felt a pang at that too. He was quite glad to see the large group of first years included his sister though - which he would have not expected anything less, but it was still good to see.

And despite his not dancing, his body was actually feeling pretty relaxed with all the stretching and he was glad that they'd done some movement so they could better focus on the lesson ahead. When Professor Gunter called the dancing off, and told them to sit where they were - err, well what Evan assumed what he said meant anyways - he couldn't resist grabbing his notebook and a pen first so he could take some notes.

Crossing his legs and getting comfortable, he listened to the norse tale, not at all familiar. The tale was... odd and to be perfectly frank, Evan had no idea what they were supposed to be getting from it or where the tie in was for everything yet. So far the only thing he could gather was that attraction was distracting... so maybe avoid that? As for why they had to dance.. he was going to assume it was not to do with trying to imagine what it would be like with 8 legs like the mentioned horse. But he still figured he'd offer an answer, so Evan raised his hand and waited to be called upon. He had no answer for the first two questions, much more interested to hear what his peers would say, but he could guess for the last. "Did we dance or move before so that we could concentrate on a complicated lesson?"

Because Runes was complicated.

Professor Gunter tilted his head down and gave it a gentle shake. "No, that's not why we danced, Evan. The dancing ties into the lesson itself but try to pinpoint a specific reason and not just the lesson itself."

Nononononononononooooooooooo! :whaa: Couldnt they keep dancing? Couldnt that be the WHOLE ENTIRE LESSON? She was just getting into the groove and learning all the awesome dance moves from V. As they were called all together, Lisa made her way over to sit next to her brother. She leaned against him and glanced up, offering him a toothy grin, before listening to the lesson at hand.

As Gunter started telling the LOOOOOOONG and non-abridged version of the Norse myth, Lisa spent the whole time imagining the event with the Marvel Thor actors. She giggled quietly as she imagined the fight scene and even wondered if the Hulk or Rocket the Raccoon had gotten involved in this whacky and wild adventure. Hehe. She loved it. She’d have to ask the Professor after class when Marvel was going to do THIS story as a one off film. That being said, they’d have to cast new actors cause the last film was in the late 2010s or something. Almost 90 years ago.... WOW! The cinematic film still had aged well.

Swift and powerful? Hmmmmm? She paused. Now who would win in a battle Shadowfax or Sleipnir? She wasn’t entirely sure but she thought it’d be a tie. “Wasn’t Sleipnir the Lord of Horses? Like Shadowfax from Lord of the Rings....” She HAD read all those books over the summer with the help of her parents. “Did he have runes carved into his hooves that made him fast? Or his bridle? Or saddle?

It took Professor Gunter a moment to understand who Lisa was talking about. Of course he had read Lord of the Rings, but often those names escaped him. Ironic as he could recite the tale of Sigurd to it's slightest detail. "Being Odin's horse certainly would make him par-excellence." As for what Lisa said next. "That could be likely. Sleipnir came into being in the beginning. Possibly before Odin discovered the Runes. Perhaps the All-Father carved runes onto Sleipnir's horseshoes, or saddle after he had learned about Runes."

She raised her hands. "Like most symbolic languages, runes have meanings." she said. "One of them must represent horses or something?"

"You're on the right track, Misa." He gave her nod and smile. "There is a Rune that represents horses."

They were stopping? ALREADY?!? But they had only JUST started dancing, Mr. Gunter! This wasn’t fair! Kinsay had reaaaaaally been hoping that their professor would let them continue like this for the whole hour (despite knowing how unlikely this would be). She made sure to properly pout so he’d know how disappointed she was. Maybe he’d even feel bad and let them start dancing again?

Once again, unlikely, but still worth a try.

So much pouting was happening. So much.

Despite her disappointment, however, she did sit down, only pausing to give Cece a quick hug before doing so. These things were important. Also important? Paying attention. She tried her very best to do just that. It was always hard to sit still. ESPECIALLY when there were long stories involved. Cooper would love this, she was sure of it. But Kinsay? Every time she heard stories like these, they just made her real sleepy. Even when she tried her very best to stay awake! They still made her sleepy.

So if she was yawning, it had absolutely nothing to do with Mr. Gunter's confusing story. It was just a Kinsay thing. Hopefully he wouldn’t take offense to it because she really was trying her very best. Despite this, her eyelids kept drooping down. Long stories + limited sleep at night = the sleepiest Kinz. In attempt to keep herself engaged, the Gryffindor raised her hand when she sensed there was a pause in the story. She hadn't come up with an answer to the questions posed, but she did have a question of her own (as per usual). There was something about the story (one of the only parts she had really processed before her brain went all tired on her) that didn't make any sense! ”Professor Gunter? Would they really give him the sun and the moon? Or were they just lying so he'd build the wall for them?” Because Kinsay was very skeptical. Sometimes adults lied just to get you to do what they wanted. So skeptical.

"I had thought this myself, Kinsay. They were giving up a lot for a massive wall to protect them." He crosses his legs up on the stage and gave her his full attention. "The Asgardian gods did not believe the man could actually do as he said in one season. So they felt the Sun and Moon, and Freya were safe. Frost Giants were also very dangerous and deadly. The need for this wall outweighed the risk in their eyes. Also keep in mind, Loki is very charismatic. He reassured the gods the man was on the up-and-up and the deal they were making was a good one. Perhaps he knew the man was really a Frost Giant and wanted to see the chaos unfold."

That Loki was a tricky fella.

You know what showed a lack of empathy, DANIEL YOON?! Laughing at someone in pain and thinking it was AMAZING.

Though Atlas could not hear the laughter over the music, so at least there was that.

He also really couldn't pay attention to much else once Quinn had his hand on the Gryffindor's cheek. Eyes watering and his right one just baaaaaaaarely able to squint open, Atlas was sure he was okay but also...not okay in that his vision was a little impaired presently. "Just...stings...a lot...is all." He wasn't surprised, but also was, that Quinn was then scolding the Hufflepuff tornado...though he didn't really think it was necessary. It had just been an accident and probably spared Atlas the embarrassment of stepping on someone's foot while trying to dance. Still squinting through that one eye and his eye watering like crazy, it was just the eye's defense mechanism to flush out containments, Atlas turned his attention towards Tadhg and nodded. "Yeah...I'm fine..." He also offered Dahlia and Apollo small smiles since they were close by proxy...and then that budding hormones induced drama.

Girls were dangerous, clearly.

Knocked entirely off whatever rhythm it was he had pretended to find just now, Atlas was relieved when Professor Gunter moved things along and didn't bring further attention to the fact that he had been smacked in the face by hair. Plopping himself down and stretching his legs out in front of him, they ached a little these days due to growing pains, Atlas glanced up at Quinn hoping he would just...plop himself down here as well, or else things would be really awkward.

His ears perked up a little as dance time turned into story time and the Gryffindor actually knew a couple of these names (namely Loki)...but soon Atlas was zoning out and looking around at all at all the lights. They were distracting and his mind found itself trying to make constellations out of the lights. Sleipnir was a horse...with entirely too many legs...maybe he could find that kind of shape in the lights...

Zoning out, and his eye still squinty squint, Atlas kind of lost himself in his scavenger hunt and starting picking his nose...and the majority of what the professor was saying zipped in one ear and right out the other. He came to around the time that some of his classmates were answering...whatever question, or questions, had been asked. That one older Ravenclaw, Misa...he thought he name might be, steered him close to the right course and suddenly his hand SHOT up.

"Ehwaz!" Runes were like constellations in a way, painting an abstract picture of something, and this one he remembered being two horses. Like twins. It was the rune for him and Aries, basically. "That's the...uh...rune she is thinking about."

And he pointed to the Ravenclaw just to make sure Professor Gunter knew what he meant. He probably should stop pointing at people.

Maybe tomorrow.

It hadn't occurred to Oakey until just now when the spinning white lights flashed into his face again. He shook his head a moment to fight off the sudden blindness.
WHOOPS. Well he was absolutely impressed with how well the students managed to listen to the Nordic Myth will all the distracting lights flashing about. Right Anyways. Professor Gunter took it upon himself to quickly turned all blue and magenta party lights into normal basic boring lights. And the spinning starry lights stopped in their place.

Eh...Wha??...Who said? Oh there! The Weird Flamsteed Boy!! "YES! BRILLIANT YES! That is the Rune Misa was speaking about!!"

Sweet Flamsteeds!!

"Ehwaz is the Rune that represents Horses." He nodded encouragingly at Atlas.
Hold onto that thought!

Cece was always down for something like that and made a mental note to extend the invitation later as she sat down beside the younger Gryffindor and tried to pay attention to the tale Oakey Professor Gunter was now telling.

And boy was it a TALE.

It was pretty interesting and she'd read about runes being carved into all sorts of things to increase their abilities or protect them, so it made sense that runes might've been carved into the hooves of THIS mythic horse. As for the dancing, "Maybe you wanted to show us that our dancing skills, or even endurance skills, could be made even better with certain runes." And maybe that meant there was more dancing in their future, hm? Cece was sure Kiz would be excited about that.

"Wonderfully thought out, Cecelia." He smiled toward his niece. "Runes can most certainly help bolster your endurance, they can even help you move a little easier."
One of the runes tattooed on his right hand was doing that for him as they spoke.

And now it was time for the lesson to begin...with a good old myth. The entire story was intriguing to her. Loki turning himself into a Mare, giving birth to a horse with 8 legs...just fascinating. Once the story was finished, she listened to Gunter's questions and she thought about the story trying to think how this story was pertaining to us dancing in the beginning of the class. Raising her hand, Aibhi answers as best as she can,

"Odin would ride Sleipnir into the land of the dead, or Hel, if I'm not mistaken. It would be such a fast horse, that it would almost look like its almost sliding through the air. I think that maybe you made us dance in the beginning of class because horses generally are considered an athletic species with large hearts and lungs for their size, but some breeds have greater stamina than others...and with those 8 legs I can't imagine Sleipnir being a low stamina horse. When we were dancing, we were using our stamina to the best of our capabilities and then once the music ended, a lot of us felt like we tired and exhausted. When it comes to runes...they have certain abilities to grant you...boosts in a way??" Runes was never really her strong suit but she tried as best as she could.

"Some brilliant additions to Sleipnir, Aibhilinn. Odin rode him into Hel, and even during the battle of Ragnarok. And Sleipnir is often called the Slippery One. So that he looked like he slid through the sky is not unheard of."

He nodded to her next answer. "You've close, Aibhilinn. Very good."

Was that how Claudine actually looked with those moves? She would have hidden herself in shame if this activity wasn’t beginning to be fun. Then her gaze trailed to Heath who looked comical but in a good way. She grinned as she watched the other two, not bothering with anyone else in the room. But what on Earth did this have to do with Ancient Runes?

Thank Merlin they could stop now though! Claudine wasn’t sure how much longer her skills would last out here. Or her bravery would fade. So, the sixth year put herself down on the ground, hugging her knees to her chest.

Come again, Professor? An abridged version of what? Whatever. The start of the story sounded interesting. And weird. Very, very weird. Anyway.

There was nothing that Claudine could contribute to this lesson at present and so she sat silently. The younger students seemed to have ideas though, especially Lisa whom Claudine knew was obsessed with Muggle things like Lord of the Rings.

The Quiet types. At least Claudine looked like she was listening and interested in the story being told and was paying attention to the other students answers.

Alfred was thankful when the dancing ended and the actual lesson began. Sitting down, he listened to the story, but Gunter probably lost him at 'Freya'. One, it was boring and two, it sounded too complicated anyway. He decided to sit their in silence and act like he was listening when he definitely was not.

Professor Gunter noticed that Alfred had gone quiet too...Hope he was paying full attention to the answers being given by his peers.

But um, how did that guy have horse kids if he wasn't a horse? And um... why did it have eight legs? And isn't it cheating to distract that guy's horse? It kinda seems like the gods were salty. I agree with Kinsay on this." They lost fair and square. There were more important parts of this story than ancient runes. Like the trickster-god-having-eight-legged-horse-kids part.

Glad that she agreed on the Horse meaning to the Rune. It meant she was at least listening to the others. "Don't let the absurdities of the Myth throw you for a loop, Ashley. Many stories all have very strange things that happen within them. How could being on Earth grant Superman heat vision? The Speed Force makes no sense. Even now stories of superheroes written by the muggles go beyond what Norse Mythology touched on centuries before. It would be a good discussion to have with Professor Schmoe." He wasn't teaching Muggle Studies after all.

He wasn't disagreeing with her or Kinsay. Mythical Gods were Saaaalty.

Awh, she thought the whole lesson would be about dancing. Remy sat down beside her friends and did her best to listen to what he was talking about. Because it was a lot.

She really had no idea about any answers to the questions asked. Ancient Runes was not her strong suit, and neither was Norse mythology. Remy stayed silent and twiddled with her fingers in her lap.

It shocked Professor Gunter to see Robot Dance Girl silent and twiddling her thumbs. Make sure to keep up with the other students. There was much more to go over.

And then there was a tiff... honestly, Quinn didn't realize why Tadhg didn't want all three of them to just dance together... but it wasn't his business, so he wouldn't put himself in the middle of it.

When Professor Gunter told them to sit, Quinn wasn't sure if Atlas wanted to sit next to him for the whole of class. He noticed Atlas glance up at him, and he knew he couldn't just... move, so.... after a moments' hesitation, he plopped himself down next to Atlas. He also wasn't paying much attention to the story as it was told because his brain was swimming with Is this alright? Does Atlas want me to sit here, or was that glance meant to say Okay, that's it, you can go now? I still don't know what he's feeling, but he came over to me for the dance activity, so it can't be too bad, right? And then Quinn reminded himself—keep it simple. Simple. Let it be simple. He relaxed a bit and let out a quiet exhale. He hadn't even noticed that his muscles were so tight while he was sitting there... he relaxed his shoulders and sunk down into his sit a little more. Everything was fine.

However, he had almost no idea how to answer the questions presented to him because he was paying almost no attention to the story. He jumped a bit as Atlas's hand shot up and he called out an answer. He was... certainly excited. But if there was a rune to represent horses... "Well..." Quinn started, adding on to Atlas and Misa, "...if Ehwaz represents horses, maybe that ties into movement? Since, y'know, people sometimes use horses to get around, and movement would relate to dancing, hence the activity. But, uh... that might be wrong." Quinn answered, biting the inside of his lip, looking down.

MERLINS UNDERPANTS! Professor Gunter looked at Quinn for a moment of two as the young Ravenclaw gave his answer. He shot up from sitting instantly and clapped his hands loudly once then followed it with a thumbs up jabbed directly toward the boy. "Excellent! Brilliant! Wonderful! You took answers from both Misa, and Atlas and came to the perfect conclusion Quinn." He hopped down from the stage once more. This time without any trouble. He paced around the students with a bit of a skip in his step. "Sleipnir, the dancing, it all comes down to ease of movement and Ehwaz is the Rune that represents this."

"Ehwaz, like many of the other runes can help enhance something. Aibhilinn, and Cecelia both made mention of this in their answers. Imagine dancing about in uncomfortable shoes. Then placing on a pair of much more comfortable ones. It's no different from placing a rune on something to make it perform a task just a little bit better than it normally should."

He took a brief moment from his semi-prancing to trace some fiery lines in the air. forming the Rune Ehwaz with the flagrate spell. Then waited for the fiery rune to dissipate in the air.
https://i.postimg.cc/mkcwCr4D/Ehwaz-jpg.jpg

What else can we attribute Ehwaz with? Tell me all you know about this particular Rune. If you need to you can go ahead and get your Textbooks out of your bags and look for an answer." He pointed to their bags that he had asked them to leave just on the edge of the dance floor.

OOC: Gonna go through this Question a bit quicker so we can jump right to the Main Activity tomorrow as well. Expect the next portion of the class to move along at about 4pm EST on May 20th.

Quinn jumped a bit at Professor Gunter's exclamation. Wait... he... he was right? He wasn't expecting that—honestly, he thought his answer was a bit of a reach in terms of logic. He reddened a bit at the Professor's praise, but smiled. It made him happy when he did good. He also watched with great intrigue as the Professor drew the rune in midair... very fun!

However.... he still knew virtually nothing else about this rune, frankly. He pulled out his rune textbook and flipped around for any information he could find. He used a finger to skim through some of the sentences. "Er... it also says..." Quinn reddened more as he read. He closed the textbook. "Um... i-it says the rune can also benefit... romantic partnerships." He twiddled his thumbs.

Ollie was actually enjoying dancing with the girls. She didn't understand why they were dancing but still, it was fun! But, as with all good things, the dancing had come to an end. Not that it really upset Ollie, she was ready to return class to the regularly scheduled program. She plopped herself next to the girls she was dancing with and opened her mind to the lesson, Professor Gunter was giving.

After she listened to V's answer, she gave a laugh. V was funny, though it was clear she didn't want to be in class anymore. Ollie couldn't blame her, if the class was about something that Ollie had no interest in, she wouldn't want to be there either. She decided not to answer this question since she wasn't 100% sure of the answer.

For this next question, Ollie wouldn't need her textbook. Her hand shot to the air as fast as it could, and her mouth opened just as fast. "That's the rune 'Ehwaz', meaning horse. It is the rune of teamwork and trust." She realized she had ended up talking over another student, Quinn, and quickly apologized. "Sorry" giving him and the professor a soft smile.

Altas felt like he was on to something, a pattern in the lights to make a shape when...BAM. The lights were gone and back to normal, which left the Gryffindor with a kind of glazed over expression as though slowly waking up from a Daydream Charm.

Uh.

He was a little more present when Professor Gunter praised his answer (yes, more of that please) and he felt a little tug of pride when Quinn built off it and ALSO got praise. Just went to show the Ravenclaw that he DID belong here, you know? Something that a lot of muggleborns had been struggling with considering the messages that had been thrust upon them all last term. Messages that...he hadn't really fought against.

At all.

Hello guilt, could do without you rearing your hideous head today.

Anyway, Ehwaz and horses. Ding dong, score one point for this Flamsteed and thank you, professor, for reiterating the obvious that he was brilliant.

Atlas was about to ask about two left feet, his shoes were plenty comfortable, but got distracted again when the drawing of the rune appeared on the board. Kind of cruel that it looked like an 'M' but had the phonetics of "i" as in "pride". Like...WHO did THAT?

He supposed he could share THAT as what else he knew about the rune, now that he was coming back to the present. At least he wouldn't be repeating the horse definition again (that first year Slytherin had probably gotten distracted like he had). Quinn's answer brought him back to what he had been thinking about earlier...sans romantic bonds and more...twin bonds. Partnerships in general.

Distracted again. This was becoming a pattern.

"It's associated with Capricorn," he tossed out there. Studying astrology had been a hobby of he and Aries just to push their dad's buttons. "So if you're one of those, you're also born under the influence of this rune. Isaac Newton and Johannes Kepler were." Just for some historical examples. "And..." to kind of piggyback off Quinn a little. "Ehwaz looks like two Laguz runes tacked on together in a mirror image, to that's probably where the partnership and intersection comes in."

Ash was soooo proud. Quinn, her friend (probably) Quinn, was getting praise from the teacher. She was sooo proud that she even smiled. She still thought the story was more important that the rune though. Even if they suspended disbelief, that guy who was building totally should have won. But whatever. "It represents moving, progress, and, um, teamwork. So maybe moving forward as a team. Is that literal or figurative, or can it be both?" Were they going to have to talk about last year? It kinda sounded like they did. In coded language, maybe. Ash hoped they didn't.

V’s answer made Lisa chuckle because she couldn’t see Professor Gunter starting a dance troupe but then again maybe the man was a secret dance machine and no one knew about it? :shifty: She had been wrong about Professor Schmoe being a dark wizard... the theory had been somewhat debunked.

As Professor Gunter began to speak about Ehwaz, she drew the rune in her notebook and then wrote how it as pronounced so that she’d get it correctly. EH-WAS. Gotcha....

She blushed when he asked the question as she was not sure how to answer but when he said that they could look in the textbook, she was more than happy to consult Professor Ancient Runes Book. She didn’t know much about the rune itself so she fished for her textbook and began flipping through it to find the answer.

It’s a rune of harmony and teamwork!

Say... maybe a certain female Slytherin and a male Hufflepuff could benefit from this rune.....?

SPOILER!!: Gunter

"Some brilliant additions to Sleipnir, Aibhilinn. Odin rode him into Hel, and even during the battle of Ragnarok. And Sleipnir is often called the Slippery One. So that he looked like he slid through the sky is not unheard of."

He nodded to her next answer. "You've close, Aibhilinn. Very good."

"Ehwaz, like many of the other runes can help enhance something. Aibhilinn, and Cecelia both made mention of this in their answers. Imagine dancing about in uncomfortable shoes. Then placing on a pair of much more comfortable ones. It's no different from placing a rune on something to make it perform a task just a little bit better then it normally should."

He took a brief moment from his semi-prancing to trace some fiery lines in the air. forming the Rune Ehwaz with the flagrate spell. Then waited for the fiery rune to dissipate in the air.

[/QUOTE]

Smiling softly she nods, "Thank you, Professor. As she listened to the other answers, she takes some mental notes of the other answers to remember. As she looks at the rune of "Ehwaz" she listened to his question and thought for a moment as to what else can this rune mean. She raised her hand then lowered it, "Ehwaz can sometimes represent a swift steed and divine twins. Its shape is sometimes can look like two horses heads or like a pair of horses looking at each other. Ehwaz holds within it that strange dream-like state where boundaries kinda blur and time runs both fast and slow and anything is possible. Ehwaz can also represent journeys, distant places and events which have not occurred yet."

Dia didn't really need her textbook for the next question, thank you. After all, Ancient Runes had been one of her best subjects at Durmstrang. Plus, they had been way ahead of this at her former school, too. So, this was basically review for the now-Slytherin.

"Besides being associated with Sleipnir, Ehwaz is also associated with the twin Norse gods Freya and Frey. Also, sometimes people wear the rune as a talisman to help them communicate with others more clearly." Not her, specifically, just people in general.

FearlessLeader19 05-20-2021 02:16 PM

Wasn’t Gunter the excited one?

Claudine really hoped the man wouldn’t injure himself in all that excitement. The lesson was still in its early stages and Merlin knew if it was still possible for the man to have an injury. Anyway. She continued paying attention because the concept of the Ehwaz rune was easy to follow along to given the vivid example that had just been used.

Ancient Runes not being a subject that she was familiar with, the sixth year needed her textbook. Once retrieved from her bag, she flipped it open to the appropriate page. “In the reversed form, Ehwaz represents a dead end.” Claudine lowered her hand. “One example might be if you’ve set a goal, at some point it would seem that no matter how you try to meet that goal, you can’t.

TakemetotheBurrow 05-20-2021 04:50 PM

Cecelia decided she liked this rune for several reasons. 1. It had to do with ease of movement, and for someone who moved as much as Cece, that was super useful. 2. It had to do with teamwork. Cece played quidditch, so she was down for anything that represented that. 3. It'd be super easy to draw in her notes. Another win for her and for Ehwaz.

"I could see how Ehwaz translates to horse and how it has to do with trust. If I'm getting on an animal that big, I want to make sure I trust it fully, y'know? She nodded solemnly and then propped her chin on her hand. It was nice when symbols made sense like this. It helped her to remember them better.

It was always good to offer answers to at least really solidify what type of Professor's one was dealing with. With the Headmaster, Evan was realizing any answer was better than none. Wanted to make sure they were thinking or whatever. Though really it seemed rather a test for their common sense. Professor Gunter it seemed better to wait til had a really solid answer. Which... he wasn't sure how much he would have to contribute that way with such an advanced subject but maybe that just meant reading ahead in Runes would be added to his extracurriculars list.

He was thoroughly impressed with the other students his age and younger who had good answers to the question, including his younger sister who he smiled proudly at as she sat with him.

Listening more intently as more answers were given, taking the time to draw the rune and adding as much of the information offered to his notes making it as clear and concise as possible. He opened his textbook to the mentioned Rune, not seeing much he could add that wasn't at least touched on by his peers. So instead, he just focused on adding the notes of things he did not see in the text but that sounded like good information to have, such as Claudine's answer for the reversed form and the younger Gryffindor. Evan hadn't even know you could be born under a rune. Which.. apparently as a Capricorn this was his.

Gaaaah, these questions were hard. Remy had done a little bit of reading about a few runes and their attributes, but they were a little hazy. Immediately, she knew that Ehwaz was translated to horse, but that had already been clarified. She didn't want to open her textbook now and read from the page, there'd be no point in answering if she had done that.

She thought for a moment about her answer before raising her hand.

"Isn't friendship, and trust to do with Ehwaz?" Maybe even loyalty. Horses were very loyal creatures, weren't they? Remy opened her mouth to say more, but nope, nothing else was coming. That's all she had to say, but was pleased she'd said something this time.

Felixir 05-20-2021 06:41 PM

If Nem were the type to argue and cause problems for no reason, they might have resisted the instruction to come back, on the grounds of phrasing. Yes, they could go and sit on the dance floor, thank you for pointing that out, but they weren't feeling it right now.

They did though, impeccably behaved student that they were. Taking up a space right on the very edge of the dance floor, Nem sat, and within moments had checked out and slipped into their own thoughts while story time got underway. Still on the subject of Ancient Runes, more or less, though it didn't take long before Nem was more focused on deciding if they ought to find some hefty slab of rock, for prototype reasons, or just go all in right away with some kind of metal. Fiddling with one while working on procuring the other couldn't hurt.

Speaking of fiddling with things, Nem was back to playing around with some of the little pieces of metal they'd taken to carrying around with them, but they were listening too. At least, they were now. "Ehwaz can be used..." they said aloud, not raising a hand or their eyes, instead looking down towards their lap at the 'window' they'd formed with their thumbs and index fingers, inside which the metal matchsticks had rearranged themselves into a formation much like the ehwaz rune. "... for anything where you might need some kind of forward motion. For example, it can help send a spell, and also give it more of a kick. An invoked ehwaz rune can work like a boost, like Aibhilinn said; runes are an energy source, and one of the magical uses of ehwaz is straightforward power."

For the record, that was the whole appeal of Ancient Runes, what they could do, how they could be used, so they were sticking with that line of thought for now. None of this representation and symbolism stuff, which Nem had learnt, but had little interest in.

Stefan 05-20-2021 08:38 PM

Story time really wasn't Noah's thing (more of Catherine's vibe actually), and it was safe to say that he wasn't as engrossed as he'd hoped when it came down to it. But of course it was needed since they had younger students around who were just starting, so he'd just have to sit the first round out, and chime in when he's actually got something to say.

Sitting on the floor with his hands behind him, Noah gave the flaming Ehwaz a good look as he listened to what his classmates had to say about it. It was interesting to note that Ehwaz was assigned to the sign Capricorn, thanks to little Flamsteed the younger. It meant that Ehwaz was naturally his and Catherine's rune. Funny how it also represented twins, because they are a set-- albeit being very different from each other. Noah was born at the closing, while Catherine was born at the beginning.

Twins with very different worlds on the same journey. And no matter how much he wanted to be independent of Catherine, he simply couldn't. "Ehwaz is not only attributed to fellowship but guardianship as well, professor. Much like moving from one world to another-- it can offer an extra protection while in movement."

"Um... i-it says the rune can also benefit... romantic partnerships." He twiddled his thumbs.

There was no shame in searching for the best answer. Just make sure it's in your own words. "That it can, Quinn." He stopped his pacing and faced the class. "We're not going to focus on the romantic aspect of Ehwaz though." That would be a tough class to teach a bunch of teenagers. "Partnership is very important for this rune."

It is the rune of teamwork and trust." She realized she had ended up talking over another student, Quinn, and quickly apologized. "Sorry" giving him and the professor a soft smile.

She was so quick to answer. But had she been paying attention? "Thank you Olive. We already established that Ehwaz means Horse." Had she heard his tale about Sleipnir? That story wasn't boring. It was actually one of the many myths that were the most intriguing to hear in his opinion. "Teamwork, and trust also play a big part in Ehwaz. You might say that is why Ehwaz works well for romantic partnerships. As Quinn answered."

"An interesting point to build off from there, Atlas. Both Kepler and Newton made major discoveries in science that involved motion of some kind." Atlas was on the top of his game today. So many of the students were. "Gravity and the three laws Planetary Motion." Hey! Look!! Airey's lessons were paying off for him still!

But let's not talk about Gravity. That's a painful subject for Professor Gunter.

What's that you got there Nemesis? Oakey was glad that he had contributed to the topic, but it would help if they had looked toward him to join this conversation. Perhaps Nemesis could benefit from Ehwaz enhancing their communication. "Make sure to look toward me when answering, Nemesis." He wasn't positive what was so distracting in their hands at the moment but it wasn't pulling his full attention away from the class. And their answer was a very good one too.
"None-the-Less that is a brilliant addition to Aibhilinn's response. A good example would be an Auror who needs to apprehend a dangerous target without getting dangerously close to them." Straight forward is in fact a movement after all.

Some of the other answers seemed to have put Noah into deep thought. "Very astute, Noah. Perhaps Ehwaz would work well with Algiz in this matter to really boost it's protective capabilities in unison. It is a perfect rune to use to ensure safe travel."

"Excellent Answers everyone! It seems we found that out that Ehwaz is also not only the Rune for Movement, and Horses. It can enhance your magic, as Nemesis mentioned. It could also improve communication as Lydia noted, and it is the Rune for Partnership. What we're going to do next is to incorporate all of these into our activity for today."

With that Professor Gunter turned his attention to the the Large covered object. The light was hitting it perfectly from the windows in the classroom.

With a swish of his wand the cover vanished and he moved it carefully to the front of the classroom just in front of the stage. A rather intricate looking wooden racetrack stood before them. Sitting atop the track were six different little pinewood derby cars.

"Today we will all try to work together to have these little cars make it to the Finish Line." He picked up the the small silver car in his hand, the one he dubbed Silver Chariot. "Etched into each of the wooden cars is the Ehwaz rune." He turned the car upside down to show the rune to the students. "Modified Gandrs you might say. If you recall from my earlier lesson the Gandr is the magic wand for which runes are etched onto. So these little Race Cars will act as those for this activity."

"I will need you each to partner up. Three maximum for each pairing. Select one of the six Gandr Wand Cars and take them to the starting line at the top of the stage. From there you will recite the Galdr for Ehwaz while holding the car in your hands. The Galdr is the magical incantation you'll need to empower the Gandr for the Rune on it to work." Once more this was a part of an earlier lesson last month.

Professor Gunter went back to the top of the stage and held Silver Chariot close to his chest as he recited it's Galdr. "ehwo ehwo ehwo, e e e e h w o o o, ehwu ehwa ehwi ehwe ehwo, ehwo ehwe ehwi ehwa ehwu, e e e e h w o o o." He then held out the car to show everyone the backside where the Ehwaz was that it was now glowing a faint white light in it's etched location. "As you can see the magic is weak. That's partially due to altering the Gandrs to such an extent. Set the Cars to the top of the track and then one of you will release the cars down the track. Once that's done. quickly hop down to the obstacles on the track. With your partner you'll need to both recite the Galdr in harmony to keep the weakening magic on the cars from fading for each of the obstacles in their paths." He pointed toward each of the major hinderances they will face with the track. "If you and your partners are off even just a little while maintaining the rune on the back of the cars they could overshoot this gap." He pointed to the jump right near the start of the track. "The Cars could collide at this sharp turn" His hand motioned to the corner of the track. "Then finally if you both can't maintain the galdr in simpatico at this loop they will fall or loose momentum." He came down off the stage and moved behind the finish line. "The Goal isn't to beat your partner on this track. It's to work together. Make the Cars move effortlessly along this track and reach the finish line at the same time."

He then placed Silver Chariot back where it was previously with the other five pinewood derby gandrs. "You can all Partner Up now. Practice with each other reciting the galdr for Ehwaz and then once you feel you've gotten the hang of it come to the top of the stage and select your vehicles to use on the track. Don't be picky. They're all equally Brilliant."

With that Professor Gunter then also went over to his nearby Chalkboard and wrote out all the instructions a bit more simplified.

OOC: MAIN ACTIVITY TIME

I'll have Oakey go about and help your characters if they are confused or frustrated or both. Maybe He'll even want to get into this activity himself. But partner up with each other first and foremost.

Don't worry about waiting for others to finish at the track. RP as though it is you and your partners turn to use it once they've finished practicing together. That way you can have your pick of which of the six cars you want to race with.

Your characters can fail at this. I actually encourage chaos at this point (within reason). Not everyone is going to succeed at completing the track on their first go.

Hopefully this is perfectly explained and I didn't miss a beat. If you have any questions PM me. :moose:

This Activity will finish on May 23rd. Then I will move on to ending the class from there.

Even before Gunter turned to do the grand unveiling, Claudine knew that was coming next. But what was under the covers was what she couldn’t guess. It could be any number of things. Duh. It turned out to be a race track and tiny, cute cars. For some reason, Claudine was instantly attracted to the Cheese Wheelz. Oh yeah. That was definitely what she wanted to use. It was just a pity this required pairing up.

Soooo…

“Passst! Heath.'' The Snakette discreetly poked the boyfriend in his arm. "Be my partner, please.''

NiallNIP 05-21-2021 07:10 AM

Quinn shook his head at the first year. "Oh, no, that's alright!"

Huh. A racetrack. Not exactly what Quinn was expecting. He wasn't really expecting anything specific, but if he was, it wouldn't have been that. He eyed each of the different cars that the Professor had set out... none of them really called to him more than any others. He thought that Cheese Wheelz seemed pretty funny, though.

Quinn eyed Atlas a bit warily. "Um... did you wanna be partners? Or would you rather go with someone else? If you do it's, um... y-you don't have to make yourself be my partner, is what I mean." Okay, maybe that wasn't a very good strategy for keeping it simple, but Quinn still wasn't sure how Atlas was feeling after the whole... everything. He just wanted to make sure... he would rather know now where Atlas stood about still being around him

Oh? OOOOOOOOOOOH! Professor Gunter came to PLAY.

The response brought an actual smile to the Gryffindor's lips and was one that lasted all the way through to the activity explanation. It was like...robotics with runes, and Atlas was a champion robotics driver. "...awesoooooooooome..." he hummed under his breath while leaning forward, hands on his knees, and attention entirely captivated. The Silver Chariot was the obvious choice too, it was so sleek and awesome looking. He had this crazy idea of...shrinking down to fit the size of the car too. Atlas didn't think he could manage it with magic...but with runes maybe they could. Like...Berkana...in reverse. Or whatever it was that that fancy word it was for when the effects were opposite.

...it was an idea he could not stop thinking about and was totally on his mind when Quinn approached him. "Huh?" Slowly coming out of his day dream while tracing the B shaped rune on his palm still. It took a moment for his brain to switch from one fantasy to reality, but it click after a second. "Yeah. Let's do it this." Awkward and confused tension? Totally forgotten at the moment and overshadowed by the light of curious possibility. Quickly loops an arm through Quinn's and pulled him a little off to the side to whisper something. "We should see about borrowing the Silver Chariot outside of class and shrinking ourselves to ride it." He would have just outright suggested that they do this during class but that was too obvious. And Professor Gunter was RIGHT there.

As Professor Gunter used his wand to pull off a cover to something in the class and it looked something like...a racetrack? Oh, that's pretty interesting. and looking at the cars he also had for the activity. This WAS gonna be fun. Looking around the class, "Anyone want to partner up for this?" Not really sure who was gonna answer or anything, but it was worth a shot to see who would.

Lisa :)

Ollie turned to her original dance group. She decided it would be easiest to break the four into two pairs of two. She wasn't sure she wanted to pair up with V, who didn't really want to be here. She mentally played eenie meenie miney mo between Remy and Lisa. ANnnnnnnddddd Lisa it is! "Why don't we separate!" She took her suggestion to the group. "I'll go with Lisa, and Remy and V you guys can pair!" She hoped this arrangement wouldn't upset anyone. It just seemed like the easiest to pair up.

Quinn blinked. Oh. "Alright," Quinn said with a small smile. He guessed... it wasn't even a big deal for Atlas. He felt a little dumb, honestly. For Atlas is was genuinely just simple. He wasn't expecting to be tugged along and he stumbled a bit when they first started walking, but he fell in step quickly. Quinn eyed the Silver Chariot and stifled some laughs. "Wait, do you think there's a spell or something to make us small enough?" He outright giggled this time, imagining him and Atlas zooming around in a toy car. It would definitely be fun to go around the loop-de-loop in it. And suddenly it was like nothing had changed since they were on the Hogwarts Express on their way to start their first year.

V! :3

Okay, the main activity sounded like A LOT of fun. Remy was starting to like Professor Gunter, although he seemed a little crazy, too. But that was a good thing. Partners... uh oh... there were more than two people in this dance group. She turned to the girls, but...

Before Remy could speak, Ollie had decided the partners, and Remy was HURT. Hurt by BOTH of her friends, even though Lisa hadn't said anything by this point so it wasn't her fault. Did Ollie not know that herself and this other firstie were not acquainted with each other???? Did Ollie like Lisa more than her???????????????????

Remy frowned a little, ignored Ollie, and turned to the other girl in the group. "I'm Remy." She introduced herself and tried a smile.

She returned her attention to the front of the class and squinted her eyes at the board to get used to the words they were gonna be pronouncing together. "Shall we try and recite it togther?" At the same time. Might as well practise that way since that was what the main activity involved.
