Heath usually hated dancing, but he found that, to his own surprise, when he focused on his friends, he didn't fear the embarrassment. Despite his newfound confidence, he was glad when the impromptu dance party ended. He sat down on the floor next to Claudine, turning his full attention to the professor as he spoke. He kept waiting for everything to piece together, but the more he heard, the more confused he became. Asgard? Gods? Giants? Horses? He had no idea how any of it related to dancing or Ancient Runes! The only thing he could figure was maybe there was no reason that the professor asked them to dance. Maybe he'd tricked the students like Loki tricked the horse in the story... distract them with something meant to be fun to keep them from getting more important work done. But that probably wasn't true. Merlin, he hoped that wasn't true! He'd had enough of getting tricked by adults, thanks. Heath may have mustered the confidence to dance, but that confidence didn't extend to offering wrong answers. At a loss, he kept quiet for now. |
Ivy grinned when Violet finally joined in on the dancing, but then it wasn't long before that part of the lesson was being wrapped up and they were moving on. Moving on to a story from Norse mythology in fact. One that she was certain she'd heard before from Cooper, but she still sat down and tried to pay attention anyway. She'd heard a lot of mythology stories from him over the years, so she was a bit fuzzy on the details of this particular one. As for what it had to do with the dancing from before, she thought the answers some of her classmates had given were pretty good. Something to do with runes enhancing or otherwise helping with movement seemed likely. The professor had said the horse was swift, after all. Maybe they'd be able to use runes to make them move really fast too. So she had no answer of her own for now, just sitting quietly and listening to the others. |
All of the sudden the dancing was OVER, and V pouted at her little gal!group. Lisa, Remy, and Ollie. She wasn't even paying a SINGLE LICK of attention to anything Lisa said but just viiiiiibed with the music until it ended, and she crossed her arms over her chest. And immediately she was lost. There was a reason she didn't like Ancient Runes. Because...well, it was hard for V, and she didn't like when things were hard for her. The story was long, V lost interest and started counting the strands of hair on Daniel Yoon's head that were out of place, and soon he was asking them questions about things she hadn't kept up with and hadn't done the reading on. So she remained quiet. Best not to look like a complete fool. "Maybe you had us dance because you're trying to start a dance crew and were trying to recruit us. I know that doesn't have to do with runes, but that's the only guess I have," she said as shruuuuuugged. |
SPOILER!!: Responses Quote:
"Ehwaz, like many of the other runes can help enhance something. Aibhilinn, and Cecelia both made mention of this in their answers. Imagine dancing about in uncomfortable shoes. Then placing on a pair of much more comfortable ones. It's no different from placing a rune on something to make it perform a task just a little bit better than it normally should." He took a brief moment from his semi-prancing to trace some fiery lines in the air. forming the Rune Ehwaz with the flagrate spell. Then waited for the fiery rune to dissipate in the air. https://i.postimg.cc/mkcwCr4D/Ehwaz-jpg.jpg What else can we attribute Ehwaz with? Tell me all you know about this particular Rune. If you need to you can go ahead and get your Textbooks out of your bags and look for an answer." He pointed to their bags that he had asked them to leave just on the edge of the dance floor. ________ OOC: Gonna go through this Question a bit quicker so we can jump right to the Main Activity tomorrow as well. Expect the next portion of the class to move along at about 4pm EST on May 20th. |
Quinn jumped a bit at Professor Gunter's exclamation. Wait... he... he was right? He wasn't expecting that—honestly, he thought his answer was a bit of a reach in terms of logic. He reddened a bit at the Professor's praise, but smiled. It made him happy when he did good. He also watched with great intrigue as the Professor drew the rune in midair... very fun! However.... he still knew virtually nothing else about this rune, frankly. He pulled out his rune textbook and flipped around for any information he could find. He used a finger to skim through some of the sentences. "Er... it also says..." Quinn reddened more as he read. He closed the textbook. "Um... i-it says the rune can also benefit... romantic partnerships." He twiddled his thumbs. |
Ollie was actually enjoying dancing with the girls. She didn't understand why they were dancing but still, it was fun! But, as with all good things, the dancing had come to an end. Not that it really upset Ollie, she was ready to return class to the regularly scheduled program. She plopped herself next to the girls she was dancing with and opened her mind to the lesson, Professor Gunter was giving. After she listened to V's answer, she gave a laugh. V was funny, though it was clear she didn't want to be in class anymore. Ollie couldn't blame her, if the class was about something that Ollie had no interest in, she wouldn't want to be there either. She decided not to answer this question since she wasn't 100% sure of the answer. For this next question, Ollie wouldn't need her textbook. Her hand shot to the air as fast as it could, and her mouth opened just as fast. "That's the rune 'Ehwaz', meaning horse. It is the rune of teamwork and trust." She realized she had ended up talking over another student, Quinn, and quickly apologized. "Sorry" giving him and the professor a soft smile. |
Altas felt like he was on to something, a pattern in the lights to make a shape when...BAM. The lights were gone and back to normal, which left the Gryffindor with a kind of glazed over expression as though slowly waking up from a Daydream Charm. Uh. He was a little more present when Professor Gunter praised his answer (yes, more of that please) and he felt a little tug of pride when Quinn built off it and ALSO got praise. Just went to show the Ravenclaw that he DID belong here, you know? Something that a lot of muggleborns had been struggling with considering the messages that had been thrust upon them all last term. Messages that...he hadn't really fought against. At all. Hello guilt, could do without you rearing your hideous head today. Anyway, Ehwaz and horses. Ding dong, score one point for this Flamsteed and thank you, professor, for reiterating the obvious that he was brilliant. Atlas was about to ask about two left feet, his shoes were plenty comfortable, but got distracted again when the drawing of the rune appeared on the board. Kind of cruel that it looked like an 'M' but had the phonetics of "i" as in "pride". Like...WHO did THAT? He supposed he could share THAT as what else he knew about the rune, now that he was coming back to the present. At least he wouldn't be repeating the horse definition again (that first year Slytherin had probably gotten distracted like he had). Quinn's answer brought him back to what he had been thinking about earlier...sans romantic bonds and more...twin bonds. Partnerships in general. Distracted again. This was becoming a pattern. "It's associated with Capricorn," he tossed out there. Studying astrology had been a hobby of he and Aries just to push their dad's buttons. "So if you're one of those, you're also born under the influence of this rune. Isaac Newton and Johannes Kepler were." Just for some historical examples. "And..." to kind of piggyback off Quinn a little. "Ehwaz looks like two Laguz runes tacked on together in a mirror image, to that's probably where the partnership and intersection comes in." |
Ash was soooo proud. Quinn, her friend (probably) Quinn, was getting praise from the teacher. She was sooo proud that she even smiled. She still thought the story was more important that the rune though. Even if they suspended disbelief, that guy who was building totally should have won. But whatever. "It represents moving, progress, and, um, teamwork. So maybe moving forward as a team. Is that literal or figurative, or can it be both?" Were they going to have to talk about last year? It kinda sounded like they did. In coded language, maybe. Ash hoped they didn't. |
V’s answer made Lisa chuckle because she couldn’t see Professor Gunter starting a dance troupe but then again maybe the man was a secret dance machine and no one knew about it? :shifty: She had been wrong about Professor Schmoe As Professor Gunter began to speak about Ehwaz, she drew the rune in her notebook and then wrote how it as pronounced so that she’d get it correctly. EH-WAS. Gotcha.... She blushed when he asked the question as she was not sure how to answer but when he said that they could look in the textbook, she was more than happy to consult Professor Ancient Runes Book. She didn’t know much about the rune itself so she fished for her textbook and began flipping through it to find the answer. “It’s a rune of harmony and teamwork!” Say... maybe a certain female Slytherin and a male Hufflepuff could benefit from this rune.....? |
[ SPOILER!!: Gunter Smiling softly she nods, "Thank you, Professor. As she listened to the other answers, she takes some mental notes of the other answers to remember. As she looks at the rune of "Ehwaz" she listened to his question and thought for a moment as to what else can this rune mean. She raised her hand then lowered it, "Ehwaz can sometimes represent a swift steed and divine twins. Its shape is sometimes can look like two horses heads or like a pair of horses looking at each other. Ehwaz holds within it that strange dream-like state where boundaries kinda blur and time runs both fast and slow and anything is possible. Ehwaz can also represent journeys, distant places and events which have not occurred yet." |
Dia didn't really need her textbook for the next question, thank you. After all, Ancient Runes had been one of her best subjects at Durmstrang. Plus, they had been way ahead of this at her former school, too. So, this was basically review for the now-Slytherin. "Besides being associated with Sleipnir, Ehwaz is also associated with the twin Norse gods Freya and Frey. Also, sometimes people wear the rune as a talisman to help them communicate with others more clearly." Not her, specifically, just people in general. |
Wasn’t Gunter the excited one? Claudine really hoped the man wouldn’t injure himself in all that excitement. The lesson was still in its early stages and Merlin knew if it was still possible for the man to have an injury. Anyway. She continued paying attention because the concept of the Ehwaz rune was easy to follow along to given the vivid example that had just been used. Ancient Runes not being a subject that she was familiar with, the sixth year needed her textbook. Once retrieved from her bag, she flipped it open to the appropriate page. “In the reversed form, Ehwaz represents a dead end.” Claudine lowered her hand. “One example might be if you’ve set a goal, at some point it would seem that no matter how you try to meet that goal, you can’t.” |
Cecelia decided she liked this rune for several reasons. 1. It had to do with ease of movement, and for someone who moved as much as Cece, that was super useful. 2. It had to do with teamwork. Cece played quidditch, so she was down for anything that represented that. 3. It'd be super easy to draw in her notes. Another win for her and for Ehwaz. "I could see how Ehwaz translates to horse and how it has to do with trust. If I'm getting on an animal that big, I want to make sure I trust it fully, y'know? She nodded solemnly and then propped her chin on her hand. It was nice when symbols made sense like this. It helped her to remember them better. |
It was always good to offer answers to at least really solidify what type of Professor's one was dealing with. With the Headmaster, Evan was realizing any answer was better than none. Wanted to make sure they were thinking or whatever. He was thoroughly impressed with the other students his age and younger who had good answers to the question, including his younger sister who he smiled proudly at as she sat with him. Listening more intently as more answers were given, taking the time to draw the rune and adding as much of the information offered to his notes making it as clear and concise as possible. He opened his textbook to the mentioned Rune, not seeing much he could add that wasn't at least touched on by his peers. So instead, he just focused on adding the notes of things he did not see in the text but that sounded like good information to have, such as Claudine's answer for the reversed form and the younger Gryffindor. Evan hadn't even know you could be born under a rune. Which.. apparently as a Capricorn this was his. |

She thought for a moment about her answer before raising her hand. "Isn't friendship, and trust to do with Ehwaz?" Maybe even loyalty. Horses were very loyal creatures, weren't they? Remy opened her mouth to say more, but nope, nothing else was coming. That's all she had to say, but was pleased she'd said something this time. |
If Nem were the type to argue and cause problems for no reason, they might have resisted the instruction to come back, on the grounds of phrasing. Yes, they could go and sit on the dance floor, thank you for pointing that out, but they weren't feeling it right now. They did though, impeccably behaved student that they were. Taking up a space right on the very edge of the dance floor, Nem sat, and within moments had checked out and slipped into their own thoughts while story time got underway. Still on the subject of Ancient Runes, more or less, though it didn't take long before Nem was more focused on deciding if they ought to find some hefty slab of rock, for prototype reasons, or just go all in right away with some kind of metal. Fiddling with one while working on procuring the other couldn't hurt. Speaking of fiddling with things, Nem was back to playing around with some of the little pieces of metal they'd taken to carrying around with them, but they were listening too. At least, they were now. "Ehwaz can be used..." they said aloud, not raising a hand or their eyes, instead looking down towards their lap at the 'window' they'd formed with their thumbs and index fingers, inside which the metal matchsticks had rearranged themselves into a formation much like the ehwaz rune. "... for anything where you might need some kind of forward motion. For example, it can help send a spell, and also give it more of a kick. An invoked ehwaz rune can work like a boost, like Aibhilinn said; runes are an energy source, and one of the magical uses of ehwaz is straightforward power." For the record, that was the whole appeal of Ancient Runes, what they could do, how they could be used, so they were sticking with that line of thought for now. None of this representation and symbolism stuff, which Nem had learnt, but had little interest in. |
Story time really wasn't Noah's thing (more of Catherine's vibe actually), and it was safe to say that he wasn't as engrossed as he'd hoped when it came down to it. But of course it was needed since they had younger students around who were just starting, so he'd just have to sit the first round out, and chime in when he's actually got something to say. Sitting on the floor with his hands behind him, Noah gave the flaming Ehwaz a good look as he listened to what his classmates had to say about it. It was interesting to note that Ehwaz was assigned to the sign Capricorn, thanks to little Flamsteed the younger. It meant that Ehwaz was naturally his and Catherine's rune. Funny how it also represented twins, because they are a set-- albeit being very different from each other. Noah was born at the closing, while Catherine was born at the beginning. Twins with very different worlds on the same journey. And no matter how much he wanted to be independent of Catherine, he simply couldn't. "Ehwaz is not only attributed to fellowship but guardianship as well, professor. Much like moving from one world to another-- it can offer an extra protection while in movement." |
SPOILER!!: Responses "Excellent Answers everyone! It seems we found that out that Ehwaz is also not only the Rune for Movement, and Horses. It can enhance your magic, as Nemesis mentioned. It could also improve communication as Lydia noted, and it is the Rune for Partnership. What we're going to do next is to incorporate all of these into our activity for today." With that Professor Gunter turned his attention to the the Large covered object. The light was hitting it perfectly from the windows in the classroom. With a swish of his wand the cover vanished and he moved it carefully to the front of the classroom just in front of the stage. A rather intricate looking wooden racetrack stood before them. Sitting atop the track were six different little pinewood derby cars. "Today we will all try to work together to have these little cars make it to the Finish Line." He picked up the the small silver car in his hand, the one he dubbed Silver Chariot. "Etched into each of the wooden cars is the Ehwaz rune." He turned the car upside down to show the rune to the students. "Modified Gandrs you might say. If you recall from my earlier lesson the Gandr is the magic wand for which runes are etched onto. So these little Race Cars will act as those for this activity." "I will need you each to partner up. Three maximum for each pairing. Select one of the six Gandr Wand Cars and take them to the starting line at the top of the stage. From there you will recite the Galdr for Ehwaz while holding the car in your hands. The Galdr is the magical incantation you'll need to empower the Gandr for the Rune on it to work." Once more this was a part of an earlier lesson last month. Professor Gunter went back to the top of the stage and held Silver Chariot close to his chest as he recited it's Galdr. "ehwo ehwo ehwo, e e e e h w o o o, ehwu ehwa ehwi ehwe ehwo, ehwo ehwe ehwi ehwa ehwu, e e e e h w o o o." He then held out the car to show everyone the backside where the Ehwaz was that it was now glowing a faint white light in it's etched location. "As you can see the magic is weak. That's partially due to altering the Gandrs to such an extent. Set the Cars to the top of the track and then one of you will release the cars down the track. Once that's done. quickly hop down to the obstacles on the track. With your partner you'll need to both recite the Galdr in harmony to keep the weakening magic on the cars from fading for each of the obstacles in their paths." He pointed toward each of the major hinderances they will face with the track. "If you and your partners are off even just a little while maintaining the rune on the back of the cars they could overshoot this gap." He pointed to the jump right near the start of the track. "The Cars could collide at this sharp turn" His hand motioned to the corner of the track. "Then finally if you both can't maintain the galdr in simpatico at this loop they will fall or loose momentum." He came down off the stage and moved behind the finish line. "The Goal isn't to beat your partner on this track. It's to work together. Make the Cars move effortlessly along this track and reach the finish line at the same time." He then placed Silver Chariot back where it was previously with the other five pinewood derby gandrs. "You can all Partner Up now. Practice with each other reciting the galdr for Ehwaz and then once you feel you've gotten the hang of it come to the top of the stage and select your vehicles to use on the track. Don't be picky. They're all equally Brilliant." With that Professor Gunter then also went over to his nearby Chalkboard and wrote out all the instructions a bit more simplified. Quote:
OOC: MAIN ACTIVITY TIME I'll have Oakey go about and help your characters if they are confused or frustrated or both. Maybe He'll even want to get into this activity himself. But partner up with each other first and foremost. Don't worry about waiting for others to finish at the track. RP as though it is you and your partners turn to use it once they've finished practicing together. That way you can have your pick of which of the six cars you want to race with. Your characters can fail at this. I actually encourage chaos at this point (within reason). Not everyone is going to succeed at completing the track on their first go. This Activity will finish on May 23rd. Then I will move on to ending the class from there. |
Even before Gunter turned to do the grand unveiling, Claudine knew that was coming next. But what was under the covers was what she couldn’t guess. It could be any number of things. Duh. It turned out to be a race track and tiny, cute cars. For some reason, Claudine was instantly attracted to the Cheese Wheelz. Oh yeah. That was definitely what she wanted to use. It was just a pity this required pairing up. Soooo… “Passst! Heath.'' The Snakette discreetly poked the boyfriend in his arm. "Be my partner, please.'' |
Quinn shook his head at the first year. "Oh, no, that's alright!" Huh. A racetrack. Not exactly what Quinn was expecting. He wasn't really expecting anything specific, but if he was, it wouldn't have been that. He eyed each of the different cars that the Professor had set out... none of them really called to him more than any others. He thought that Cheese Wheelz seemed pretty funny, though. Quinn eyed Atlas a bit warily. "Um... did you wanna be partners? Or would you rather go with someone else? If you do it's, um... y-you don't have to make yourself be my partner, is what I mean." Okay, maybe that wasn't a very good strategy for keeping it simple, but Quinn still wasn't sure how Atlas was feeling after the whole... everything. He just wanted to make sure... he would rather know now where Atlas stood about still being around him |

The response brought an actual smile to the Gryffindor's lips and was one that lasted all the way through to the activity explanation. It was like...robotics with runes, and Atlas was a champion robotics driver. "...awesoooooooooome..." he hummed under his breath while leaning forward, hands on his knees, and attention entirely captivated. The Silver Chariot was the obvious choice too, it was so sleek and awesome looking. He had this crazy idea of...shrinking down to fit the size of the car too. Atlas didn't think he could manage it with magic...but with runes maybe they could. Like...Berkana...in reverse. Or whatever it was that that fancy word it was for when the effects were opposite. ...it was an idea he could not stop thinking about and was totally on his mind when Quinn approached him. "Huh?" Slowly coming out of his day dream while tracing the B shaped rune on his palm still. It took a moment for his brain to switch from one fantasy to reality, but it click after a second. "Yeah. Let's do it this." Awkward and confused tension? Totally forgotten at the moment and overshadowed by the light of curious possibility. Quickly loops an arm through Quinn's and pulled him a little off to the side to whisper something. "We should see about borrowing the Silver Chariot outside of class and shrinking ourselves to ride it." He would have just outright suggested that they do this during class but that was too obvious. And Professor Gunter was RIGHT there. |
feel free to partner up with her if you want. SPOILER!!: Gunter/ Acitivty Time As Professor Gunter used his wand to pull off a cover to something in the class and it looked something like...a racetrack? Oh, that's pretty interesting. and looking at the cars he also had for the activity. This WAS gonna be fun. Looking around the class, "Anyone want to partner up for this?" Not really sure who was gonna answer or anything, but it was worth a shot to see who would. |
Lisa :) Ollie turned to her original dance group. She decided it would be easiest to break the four into two pairs of two. She wasn't sure she wanted to pair up with V, who didn't really want to be here. She mentally played eenie meenie miney mo between Remy and Lisa. ANnnnnnnddddd Lisa it is! "Why don't we separate!" She took her suggestion to the group. "I'll go with Lisa, and Remy and V you guys can pair!" She hoped this arrangement wouldn't upset anyone. It just seemed like the easiest to pair up. |

V! :3 Okay, the main activity sounded like A LOT of fun. Remy was starting to like Professor Gunter, although he seemed a little crazy, too. But that was a good thing. Partners... uh oh... there were more than two people in this dance group. She turned to the girls, but... Before Remy could speak, Ollie had decided the partners, and Remy was HURT. Hurt by BOTH of her friends, even though Lisa hadn't said anything by this point so it wasn't her fault. Did Ollie not know that herself and this other firstie were not acquainted with each other???? Did Ollie like Lisa more than her??????????????????? Remy frowned a little, ignored Ollie, and turned to the other girl in the group. "I'm Remy." She introduced herself and tried a smile. She returned her attention to the front of the class and squinted her eyes at the board to get used to the words they were gonna be pronouncing together. "Shall we try and recite it togther?" At the same time. Might as well practise that way since that was what the main activity involved. |
