Default Transfiguration Lesson 2: Bird is the Word

In the months since the Neo-Alliance followers took over the sixth floor, nearly all transfiguration classes have been held outside, and this one is no exception. Today’s lesson takes place on a lovely early spring afternoon on an area of the school grounds just outside the Forbidden Forest. The weather is unseasonably warm for this time of year, so there is no need for heating charms.

As you approach, you’ll notice two rows of benches arranged in a semicircle in front of a copse of trees. A conjured chalkboard sits in the middle of the semicircle, bearing the message: DO NOT TOUCH THE BOXES! The two large cardboard boxes in question are stacked behind the chalkboard, slightly hidden from view. Professor Carton stands beside the chalkboard to greet the students. At first glance, he appears unaffected by recent events. There is no sign of fear or sadness on his face; the only thing different from his usual stoic demeanor is his unreadable expression as he watches the students arrive.

He greets each student with instructions to take a seat, though he gives no indication that the students from The Room are expected to separate from the others. An oversight on his part, perhaps?

OOC: Welcome to our second OOC transfiguration lesson! Please remember that all students living in The Room would be escorted to class. We will begin in 18-20 HOURS CLASS HAS STARTED.

Lesson Progression:

Q1: What kind of animal would you want to help you in a fight? Why did you choose that animal?
Q2: What are some things to consider when conjuring? Why is conjuring an animal more difficult than conjuring an object?

Phoebe almost smiled when Kizzy brought up that darn shark again. If they ever got out of here, she was absolutely going to buy the kid a shark. Somehow. A big one with lots of teeth.

"Wouldn't it depend on whether this battle is offensive or defensive? If I want to protect myself from attack, I might choose an animal that is fast or armored, but if I want to be the one attacking, I would choose an animal with big teeth and a bad attitude. Or maybe an erumpent. Boom."

Had he asked her about her thoughts upon arriving, Gracelyn had to admit she wasn’t entirely certain how she would have answered the professor. Considering who knew who was listening in, aside from the obvious answer of the hoods who had delivered all of the kids who had been sequestered. Imprisoned. Her friends. There were a lot of things going through the Hufflepuff’s head, and none of which seemed entirely safe to voice out loud.

Except, she was getting the slightest inkling that the answer as to who the enemy referred to in his question wasn’t what certain people would have wanted it to be. Namely, she was getting the idea the enemy wasn’t Muggles in Professor Carton’s eyes, but that wasn’t the topic of discussion. She’d sent a glance Morgan’s way when he had spoken about basilisks, though. That would have been useful, and then the answer about dogs had made her miss her own dog yet again. But she had a different response to give, as she’d raised her hand almost defiantly. “A honey badger. They’re immensely protective against enemies, even ones bigger than them, even though they’re also kind of cute.” And nearly indestructible. And also, she was feeling very Hufflepuff at the moment.

Listening to the answers being given so far and trying to decide on one of her own, Ivy felt her stomach twist a little at Morgan's answer, but she forced herself to quickly brush it off. This question was just hypothetical - or maybe it was leading into something? Some sort of spell that had to do with animals?

Either way, she needed to focus and pick something. "A lion," she finally said, hand raised. "They're strong and tough and there's a reason they're considered the king or queen of the jungle."

Dahlia didn't need to think about who Carton meant when he said 'the enemy'. Obviously he was speaking about the Impostor Headmaster and his Hooded Minions. Anyone else that followed the Neo-Alliance was more than likely an enemy now too. Having so many enemies at only eleven years old was a scary thing.

As for what creature she would take into a fight with her, well that was simple. A dragon. Despite her very close encounter with the one that wanted to make her a meal... she still had a great love for them. However that answer was already given. So was Basilisk and Acromantula, two others she would want on her side. There were others though she would more than proudly take with her but one stood out a little more than others and for that reason she raised her hand. "The Nundu," Lia answered softly. "Their breath is toxic and therefore it can eliminate the problem without much work. Plus it would take a rather later number of capable wizards just to take the Nundu down." Close to around one hundred wizards to be exact.

An enemy, huh? A part of Avalon wanted to smile as she imagined a herd of all these animals taking down Rosier and his clan. But the idea was too far-fetched. Hope of ever getting out of Hogwarts again was fading. Now that two of her professors were locked up in the Room with them, she felt their chances dwindling day by day. All she could do was wish that someone in the outside world knew what was going on. And that eventually, someone could help them.

She tried not to get upset thinking about the odds, and instead focused on answering the question. Her first thought was a hippogriff. She thought they were fierce and majestic, not to mention that her wand contained hippogriff feather. But they were also kind of clunky, and they would be quite hard to conceal if you wanted a surprise attack. Perhaps a similar, but more stealthy creature would be a good option. "I'd choose a thestral. They're very clever, and they're not afraid to stand up to enemies. Plus, they're invisible to most people, so they could be useful for a sneak attack." Though they wouldn't be invisible to Avalon anymore. Not after what happened in Defense Against the Dark Arts. She tried not to tear up at the horrific memory. That zap of green light. The poor muggle's dull, lifeless eyes. Avalon didn't even know their name. And yet they were gone with the flick of Rosier's wand.

Incase you encounter a enemy hm, did Rosier and his hooded minions count? Hiding back a smirk thinking about a Wampus reading their thoughts and hypnotizing them he hid back a snickering grin. Now... that was something he could watch all day was that, ah...sweet revenge. Sitting beside Lia he held her hand nodding at some people's answer taking notes.

Raising his hand he bit his lip. "I would have a wampus, cause wampuses are fast and impossible to kill and has the power of hypnosis and Legilimency which could be use to read your enemy thoughts and control them possibly. " Not to mention the thought of a wampus making Rosier's hooded minions turn against him and each other was oddly satisfying to his mind and spirit. Although it could be any enemy but as of right now his only enemies were them.

Norman couldn’t help but wonder if there was a bit of house pride behind Miss Jenovick’s answer. Regardless, it was a good one to start the discussion. “Excellent, Miss Jenovick,” he said, nodding in approval. “Speed and strength are essential in a fight, but it’s also important to consider size too. Too large a creature could give away one’s position prematurely; too small could be easily overpowered.”

"A dragon, like Artemis! Only...only a real dragon, a big one. A fully grown one to roast them the moment they start talking smack when the alliance is around and trying to drag the rest of us down with them. The dragon would eat them after, and and and then we don't have to file paperwork because uhh....I don't think anyone would try arresting a dragon and even if they DID, it would just roast them, too, then fly away."

Dragons were probably the best choice. Not many armies could stand up to them. They just flew in the sky, far away from danger.

"Are we getting dragons today, Professor? Can I have a proper black one? It's hard to pass Artemis 'cause he's purple."

Norman was unsure whether to be amused or unnerved by this answer. There was no way he could hear the word “dragon” and not think of that Merlin-forsaken field trip, but it was a valid choice. It was the question at the end that tipped the scales in favor of amusement, and a faint smile appeared on his face. “No, I don’t think anyone would try that. Good point, MIss Cambridge,” he replied.

As for her question, he shook his head. “Not today, though there is a spell to turn small objects into dragons, Draconifors. I-” He started to offer to teach it to her outside class, but he remembered he couldn’t. He doubted the Neo-Alliance would allow students out of The Room for a spell demonstration. His smile instantly vanished. “I’ll keep that in mind for a future lesson.”

Book now balancing on her lap, the Snakette mentally nodded. Uh huh. She knew who the enemy was. But this animal… did it have to be magical or mundane? Carton hadn’t specified and Fiona had named a snake.

The fifth year raised her hand. “A rat, like my Samm. Rats are small, can be hardly noticed or easily disregarded as a rodent. That can work as an advantage of sneaking up on the enemy and causing quite the distraction in the form of biting and scratching. Plus, it helps that they’re fast creatures.’’

Here was an answer Norman didn’t expect to hear! He nodded approvingly. “Good thinking, Miss Blaze,” he said. He’d already touched on speed earlier, and there was no sense in repeating the same thing over and over - one of many reasons why he kept the anti-muggle sentiments in his lessons to a minimum - so he chose to address the other part of her answer. “A good distraction can turn the tide of a fight.” He had seen it happen before.

As he sat in class, he focused on some nonexistent point at the front of the room as his mind wandered, forgetting what class he was even in today. He vaguely heard the question and was about to offer a half-hearted answer. But that second year beat him to it. Dragons were his favorite, or they had been when he cared enough to have a favorite, and why wouldn't they be? They were awesome. But he didn't need to copy a little girl.

Without raising his hand, he answered in a monotone, almost robotic voice, "A basilisk. They don't even have to do anything. Someone simply looks at them and poof! They're gone."

Well, McCarthy’s answer took a dark turn! Norman wasn’t bothered by it though; he was more concerned by the robotic voice and the fact that the Gryffindor hadn’t raised his hand before speaking. “Next time, raise your hand and wait to be called on, Mr. McCarthy,” he said. Please! He didn’t need the hooded horrors hexing any students today, especially for something so simple! “But that’s a valid point. There’s something to be said for efficiency in battle.”

Usually, Emmerson's answer would have been enough to cheer her up. She would have joined in on the question asking. Wondering if she could have a blue dragon or a Swedish Short-Snout one, because her wand had one of their heartstrings. But Emm's answer went over Kizzy's head. She was having a hard time focusing on anything. Even things that would usually be exciting. So when it was her turn, she paused before contributing dully. "A shark." If she were to be honest, she hadn't really thought the question through. It was hard to think anything through. But she needed an answer. "Because, um... Because I just want to meet one in real life."

Did it really matter?

It was hopeless. They'd just lose anyway. The enemy was stronger and bigger and knew more spells. They had more people on their side. They could lock you up in rooms and take away your wands. They could vanish you. They could kill.

So did it matter? Fighting the enemy? Kinsay didn't think so anymore, but there was still a tiny part of her that hoped Professor Carton would show them otherwise.

Norman gave the younger James girl a scrutinizing look. She seemed a bit… distracted, which was completely understandable but mildly concerning given the current climate of the school. Just when he thought he would have to reprimand her for not paying attention, she gave an answer that was completely unexpected. “Okay, yes,” he replied. “If a battle took place in or near water, a shark could be a useful ally.”

But maybe a beast like that would be too unpredictable--what if she couldn't control it? And it's not like you could take something that big around with you in real life.

No, now that Violet thought it over, she would have to say, "Dog," she said decidedly when it was her turn to be called on. "A Doberman Pinscher. They're powerful and energetic, and extremely loyal and protective to their humans. But that also makes them aggressive and dangerous when those humans are threatened. I thought of other animals I could pick, but dogs are both dangerous and loyal, something you can control and which wouldn't turn on you, only your enemies. And you could take a dog around with you and no one would think it very odd." Plus, Violet thought, they'd be good company when you weren't fighting. Violet wished she had a dog back in the Room right now.

This answer got a faint hint of a smile from Norman. If he were a vain man, he might’ve considered his patronus and animagus form, both of which took the form of a dog, and whether the words Miss Blackthorne used to describe dogs also applied to his own personality, but that was not the case. He didn’t feel very powerful or protective, not that he would ever let the students know that! Instead he approached the answer from a more tactical standpoint. “Hiding in plain sight,” he replied, nodding in approval. “All excellent points, Miss Blackthorne.”

Cece wouldn’t want a creature with her in a fight, did the Professor know? Because that could put the creature in danger and she didn’t want to do that to any creature, no matter how big or strong or lethal. She supposed she had to answer, though. ”An Acromantula. They’re smart, strong, and when there’s one around, there’s usually more to come.”

Acromantula… another large and dangerous magical creature. At first, Norman thought Miss Summers’s answer was going in the same direction as the dragon and basilisk ones, but he was pleasantly surprised. Her answer also got an approving nod. “Yes, there’s strength in numbers,” he replied. “Very good, Miss Summers.”

She raised her hand. "I'd want a hippogriff," she said. "They're fierce and it could protect you, and they're kind of scary looking, so Muggles might be scared of them, too." Plus, you could ride hippogriffs and fly away. And flying was good. That, too.

Another magical creature answer. Norman was sensing a pattern here… not that there was anything wrong with that. It was a completely valid answer. “Yes, most muggles would be scared,” he said. “Sound reasoning, Miss Turov.”

Norman considered the elder James girl’s point for a brief moment. He hadn’t specified whether the hypothetical situation was an offensive or defensive one to give the students a wider range of options… that and he’d found that offense and defense were not mutually exclusive. The best defense is a good offense, as the old saying goes. “It could, yes,” he replied, nodding. “Good choices in both cases, Miss James.”

Here was another answer Norman hadn’t expected! “Good thinking, Mr. O’Neill,” he replied with the faintest hint of a smile.

Norman paused a moment, glancing around the area for any more hands in the air. When he saw none, he addressed the class again, ”Good answers, everyone!" There were really no wrong answers to that question. It was simply meant to get the students thinking from a tactical standpoint and lead into the lesson subject. "Now, should you ever find yourself in battle or some other situation where you’re in dire need of an animal or object you don’t currently possess, one option is conjuration.”

With a wave of his wand, the word appeared on the board, and he continued, “Conjuration is the ability to transfigure something out of thin air. It is one of the most difficult branches of transfiguration in existence, second only to Human Transfiguration. Bearing that in mind, what do we need to consider when conjuring? Why do you think conjuring an animal is more difficult than conjuring an object, such as a chair?”

OOC: Question 2 is up! You'll have ABOUT 18 HOURS for this one.

Hopefully they wouldn't have to conjure the animals they mentioned in their responses. Conjuration was difficult as it was, let alone having to conjure a thestral. Those things were enormous and comple—far beyond Avalon's magical ability. She figured they'd probably be practicing with smaller creatures first. Maybe a snail or something. Weren't invertebrates easier to work with? She recalled that from an earlier lesson.

"Creatures have a lot more working parts than most inanimate objects," she said after raising her hand. "Internal organs, complex bodily systems, fur, feathers, and what not. So there's more that you could miss out on when you're conjuring it." Avalon wasn't totally sure that her answer was correct, but it seemed probable. Sort of like splinching when it came to apparition. There were so many appendages to think about, it would be far too easy to leave a finger or toe behind.

This lesson was going to be challening if they were going to conjure creatures today and Cece had trouble focusing under the best of conditions. Being able to conjure a creature with everything going on in her mind lately was, well, it seemed like an impossible task. She'd try, though. She always did that much.

"Because of all the things Avalon mentioned, it's easy for an attempt at conjuring a creature to go wrong. You could end up with missing parts or even some kind of hybrid type creation..." She'd prefer the hybrid mistake option, obviously.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Nearly everyone chosen huge animals, Claudine observed. But the reasonings behind the choices were intriguing. To each student their own reasonings, she thought. Anyway. Moving on. Conjuration was the focus of today’s lesson? Oh no. That was one of the more difficult branches of Transfiguration {as mentioned by Carton after she’d thought of it}, and for this particular fifth year.

Avalon and Cecelia had pretty much voiced what Claudine thought but was there more that the Snakette could add? Her hand went up a few minutes later. “You can conjure a smaller animal than you intended. Maybe you wanted to conjure a huge shark but wind up conjuring a baby shark.’’

do-do-do-do-do-do.

If her earlier smile wasn't noticed, the smile that now tugged at her lips most certainly should be. Having Carton's praise for her answer did wonders for her little self. How could anyone be against having a Nundo on their side? She didn't see any disadvantages to it. Well... except for the fact that it could kill an entire town with its breath and the chances of controlling it on her own were slim to none. Other that that though, she was all for it.

Now her besties answer, that was a good one. Dahlia gently squeezed his hand since he still had hold of hers and flashed him a quick grin. "Ooooh, I like that. We would make an excellent fighting duo." The words were whispered only loudly enough for him to hear her.

Conjuring creatures?! Wicked! Is that what they would be doing today?! Lia shifted on the bench all of her attention on Carton. She raised her hand. "Well umm... don't you need to be able to fully visualize what it is you're conjuring? If you're not entirely sure of it's looks or size you can end up with something totally different than your intentions." It sounded plausible to her.

There was a genuine smile now spread across the Gryffindor's face, one of the few that showed her she still remembered what those were like. It was entirely because the Professor had promised to consider making dragons for another class. Now, Emm didn't expect Professor Carton to redo his entire curriculum on her whim, but it was nice to know sometimes your opinions still mattered. It wasn't often that she felt that way anymore.

"Professor, Professor! One fun fact about what Avalon and Cece are saying is if you're not careful and don't concentrate enough or you bite off more than you can chew THEN you could have some half formed, weird looking mutant thing and you'll have to live with the fact you made that thing for the rest of your life."

Probably.

She didn't ever wanna make a half formed funny looking thing with ten eyes and 6 legs. Uh...that was just gonna be a no from her, thanks. "Whereas if you mess up a chair, it's no big deal. It's not gonna be squealing or squinting at you begging to be vanished--unless you're THAT bad at Transfiguration...then maybe your chair will have eyes."

Gross.

Paying attention was so hard, especially when she didn't care much for the topic of the lesson. Conjuration was one of the most difficult branches of transfiguration. That's what Professor Carton said and it made Kinsay want to shut off immediately. She couldn't even do the regular branches of transfiguration. So the hardest kinds? Forget it. She wasn't going to try and fail in front of everyone. She simply wouldn't.

Add to this the general lack of motivation that came from being... so sad all the time and, well, paying attention was just about a herculean task now.

So once again, Kizzy found herself looking around their outdoor space - finding it to be far more interesting than the lesson itself. She wished she could go hide among the trees, they'd keep her safe. She was sure of it.

Unfortunately, entertaining such thoughts caused her to entirely miss the question that their professor posed, but once Claudine mentioned conjuring baby sharks, Kinsay somewhat resubscribed to the lesson. "Can we conjure baby sharks today, Professor? ..... Please?" Could they have just one nice thing before they were shut back into their box Room? One good thing? Please?

KIZZY. Why was she so obsessed with those SHARKS? Phoebe choked back a laugh that might be a sob, but luckily it was mostly swallowed. Leave it to Kizzy to continue to be adorable in the face of all odds.

Phoebe raised her hand. "I imagine keeping a conjured animal intact requires a lot of concentration and focus, which would be super hard to do if you were also fighting." Maybe? Was that a thing?

SPOILER!!: Question 1 catch up

Bella's mood dropped a little when Apollo didn’t show up, but atleast many of her housemates like Claudine, Tadhg and Fiona were there. Busying herself with getting her supplies out for the lesson helped to distract her thoughts from how things were at the moment. Was learning magic supposed to be like this? Had her parents lied to her when they had said that being at Hogwarts had been amazing for them?

Bella focused on Professor Carton as he began the lesson. Yes, they knew who this unnamed enemy was. They were the cause of all the badness at school and not being able to write home. Anyways could they use both magical and muggle animals? Not wanting to anger anyone she chose a magical beast.

Raising her hand the first year said. “I’d choose a chimera because they can both be a fierce and dangerous attacker or defender depending on the situation with their lion heads and dragon tails.”

Why do you think conjuring an animal is more difficult than conjuring an object, such as a chair?”
It was cool that nobody chose the same creature as someone else Bella thought to herself silently. The topic for today’s lesson was apparently conjuration, yikes that was advanced magic. Did Professor Carton really expect her to be able to conjure something into an animal and get it right as a first year? Trying not to panic Bella focused on answering the second question by raising her hand to answer, but unsure if she was right with her thinking. "Um, it’s harder to conjure an animal because it’s a living creature with vital organs that it needs. If an animal conjuration goes bad you could end up potentially injuring the animal if you mess up, and it doesn’t get a nose or only three legs instead of four. I think that a snake is easier to conjure than a dragon because it has only has a few organs."

Right off the bat, Miss Sinclair brought up an important point. “Well said, Miss Sinclair,” Norman replied, nodding. Really, he didn’t think he could have worded that better himself! “The more complex the structure, the harder it is to conjure.”

Norman knew it was only a matter of time before the subject of hybrids came up. Miss Summers’s answer also earned an approving nod. “Exactly, Miss Summers!” he said. “Which is why it’s important to take conjuration seriously, know your spell and know your intentions.”

Norman’s lips curled into a slight smile. What was it with the kids and sharks today? Was it International Shark Appreciation Day or something? He must’ve missed the memo. Never mind. “That’s true, Miss Blaze,” he said. “By the same logic, you could also conjure a larger creature than intended - say you wanted to conjure a rat but wound up with a giant rodent monster - which is why it’s important to have a clear picture in mind before conjuring.”

Believe it or not, Norman found it actually helpful to know his students’ interests. Students were more likely to stay engaged when they cared about the subject. He returned Miss Cambridge’s smile with a slight one of his own… a smile that came dangerously close to becoming a laugh at the thought of a chair with eyes. But there would be no breaking into giggles in front of the students today (or ever)! Some children were more sensitive than others and could interpret it the wrong way, and more importantly, laughter could draw attention from Rosier’s minions. “True on all counts, Miss Cambridge,” he said. “One would have to be very distracted to conjure a chair with eyes!”

Speaking of distractions, Norman noticed the younger Miss James looking around the area, Usually he wouldn’t think much of it. If the students didn’t want to pay attention, that was their choice, one which their grades would reflect. As long as they weren’t disturbing others, he wouldn’t waste time and energy scolding them. He was a firm believer in picking one’s battles, but he also knew that a distracted student was vulnerable to intervention from the hooded horrors. “Eyes to the front please, Miss James,” he said, his tone firm but not unkind.

Again with the sharks? Okay, he was definitely going to have to do a shark-related lesson sometime! “Not today,” he replied. “But I will consider that for another lesson.”

What was that choked back noise? Norman couldn’t tell if it was supposed to be a laugh or a sob. Whatever it was, it got a confused eyebrow raise from him, but he would overlook it as long as it didn’t happen again. Instead, he focused on Miss James’s answer to the question. “You imagine correctly, Miss James,” he replied, nodding. “When conjuring animals, it’s important to maintain concentration even after casting the spell not only to keep the creature intact, but to make it do what you want.”

Norman was unsurprised to hear Miss Connolly offer yet another example of a large, aggressive magical creature as her answer to the first question. That answer earned the girl an approving nod and words of praise, just like the other students received, Her answer to the second question started out along the same lines as Miss Sinclair and Miss Summers’s, but just when he thought her answer would stay along those lines, she said something new. “Correct on all counts, Miss Connolly,” he replied. “Snakes are one of the simplest creatures to conjure.” But he’d come back to that in a minute.

Norman’s blue-green eyes swept the areas in search of both more hands in the air and signs of Rosier’s minions watching. Upon seeing neither, he spoke to the class as a whole, “Clearly you have a basic understanding of what makes conjuration, and particularly animal conjuration, difficult, but just to recap…” He waved his wand at the blackboard, and the following points appeared on the board behind him as he said them. “Creatures have a more complex structure than objects, which means more that could go wrong or be left off. Visualization and concentration are vital to bring and keep the creature in existence and to make it do your bidding. Without that, incomplete conjurations and mutant hybrid creatures can result.”

He paused to give the students time to take notes before continuing, “As Miss Connolly mentioned, snakes are one of the simplest types of creatures to conjure. The other type, and the one we’ll be focusing on today, is birds.”

Norman drew his wand, prepared to demonstrate the spell in question. “To conjure birds, we use the incantation Avis. The wand movement looks a bit like a stick figure drawing of a bird, like so…” He demonstrated the wand movement but didn’t cast the spell yet. There was one more thing the students needed to know before he did. “When cast, this spell will emit smoke and a loud blast. Don’t be alarmed - this is normal!”

Only after giving the class ample warning did he make the bird-shaped wand movement and cast, “Avis!” With a loud BANG and a puff of smoke, a flock of birds - blue with cranberry red chests, which some observant students might recognize as the Ilvermorny school colors - shot out of the tip of Norman’s wand. They chirped, flying above the students’ heads and perched in the trees along the edge of the Forbidden Forest.

“Now, take a few minutes to practice the incantation and wand movement, and visualize the kind of bird you’d like to conjure. Think about its size, color, and body proportions. When you have your concept in mind, come to the front to get a birdcage -” With a flick of his wand, he levitated the boxes out from behind the board, and he opened them up to reveal several bird cages inside. “-and fill it with as many conjured birds as you can before time runs out. You may work by yourself or with a partner, your choice. You have fifteen minutes starting… NOW!”

OOC: Thanks for sticking with me! We’ve reached the mini activity. To receive full credit, your character needs to:

1. Practice the incantation and wand movement for the spell Avis.

2. Visualize a type of bird to conjure (The more detailed the description, the better!)

3. Collect a bird cage

4. Attempt to fill the cage with conjured birds. Working in pairs/groups is allowed, but each person must attempt the spell. (You are allowed to RP the outcome of your spells. Spell attempts DO NOT have to be successful to receive credit)

You’ll have AT LEAST 60 HOURS for the mini activity. As always, feel free to PM me with any questions.

Violet spent a good amount of time practicing the incantation and the wand movement--that made her smile, it reminded her of those childish depictions of seagulls she used to draw on pictures when she was little. She felt that with living creatures, even magically conjured ones, you should be careful and very sure you knew what you were doing.

Then she sat back and pictured the birds she wanted to conjure. Picking one was easy--she'd been thinking of magpies nearly every day since the first night of the year when she discovered her pet magpie, Machiavelli, had disappeared from her dorm along with all the other pets. She could picture him now, his sleek little black body and his clever, smooth black head, with his snowy-white belly beneath, looking like the bib of a formal tuxedo shirt. And when he flew, the tips of his wings would be white as well, flashing in out of view as he sailed through the trees. Suddenly Violet felt tears starting to well up at the edges of her eyes, and she angrily blinked them away, hoping no one had noticed. Emotion had no place in conjuration, she scolded herself.

Well, that was enough visualization, apparently. If it was not all she needed, it was definitely all she could handle right now. Furtively flicking the last moisture away from her eye with a forefinger, Violet rose and walked to the front of the room to collect a birdcage.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Fiona mentally repeated the incantation of, "Avis," in her mind ensuring she got the right pronunciation. After feeling confident that she had done so, it was time to practice the correct wand movement. Fiona traced her wand in the air in the avian formation that Professor Carton had demonstrated.

As she practiced, she began to think about the bird that she wanted to conjure. Soon, her mind decided upon a raven. In her opinion, this was a very beautiful and highly intelligent bird. Fiona would normally close her eyes to visualize but recent events taught her to be on alert so she kept her eyes open as she pictured the sleek black feathers that could sometimes have an iridescent purple hue to them, the strong beak used to devour its prey, the strong yet streamlined shape of their body.

Once that vivid image was in her mind, Fiona went up to where the bird cages were and retrieved one for herself. She hoped that there was an expansion charm of some sort because fitting more than one raven in a cage could prove a difficult feat.

Okay, so Claudine had used the shark example out of pure randomness but it seemed like one Kinsay James was fond of the creatures. The Snakette found that quite cute, and thought it was nice of Carton to humor her by saying he’ll consider something sharky for a future lesson. Actually, that would be quite the lesson.

Anyway.

Claudine nodded to Carton to acknowledge that her answer could also work in the opposite direction then went on to make her scribbled notes. Oh. The Bird Conjuring Charm. Time would tell if Claudine would be adept to this one. Man, Carton was not kidding about that bang. Because she didn’t like noise, she winced. But the resulting birds fluttering around were a pretty sight. Already her mind was wandering to the type of birds she wanted to create.

And she knew just the type.

But first… practice.

“Avis. A-vis. Avis.” Simple enough, right? Just then a thought occurred to her. “Professor, we are going to release any successfully conjured birds, right? That is… if they don’t vanish after a while... “ Claudine eyed Carton questioningly. Did the birds disappear after a while, much like leprechaun gold?

While she waited for her clarification, the fifth year mimicked Carton’s earlier wand movements: stick figure of a bird, a weird looking ‘m’ if you like. And repeat, repeat.

Simple enough.

Lia was on quite a roll today! She had earned herself a small smile and an enthusiastic head nod all in one lesson. So far so good. Things were at least looking up a little in this class and she was ready for whatever came next. Hopefully. Maybe.

Conjuring birds. It was no Nundu or Dragon but she liked birds. She could sit outside in her yard at home and watch the birds come bathe in the bird bath or eat from the few different bird feeders they had. A small smile formed on her lips as she remembered this, it made her miss home. A few more months and she would be back with her family. She would be okay until then.

Dahlia watched Carton conjuring an bunch of very pretty birds, lifting her head to see them landing in the trees. How cool was that?! Nudging Tadhg lightly in the side with her elbow she smiled at him. This was something they could do.

Jumping up onto her feet, she wasted no time at all getting a bird cage and bringing it back to her seat where she set it down. The entire time she had going over the incantation both in her head and out loud. "Avis... avis... avis.." Really it was that simple. Nothing difficult about this one!

What was a little more troublesome was prefecting the wand movement. The natural flow of a bird shape didn't come all that easily to her and had to be practiced more than a handful of times before she was comfortable with it.

Now came visualization. Choosing a bird and seeing it fully in her mind. Closing her eyes, Lia did her very best to picture the type of bird she wanted to conjure. A Starling.

Well...she wasn't expecting birds.

It took the young Gryffindor a moment to reconcile with the choice of animal for conjuring but as there were always people watching and a certain behaviour expected, she didn't dwell very long on the disappointment. Nooooo, THIS girl was ready to get started on the work so she wouldn't end up on the wrong side of a hex for moving too quickly.

Before starting any practice, Emmerson went and got herself a cage. She would be needing this. While she didn't think she'd be able to FILL the cage like Professor Carton wanted, the 12-year-old had plans for at least one phenomenal bird.

"Avis, avis, avis........avis, avis, avis." She muttered to herself as she went to find a spot to stand at. It had to be well away from anyone who had plans to jeopardise her safety, while being close enough to the Professor in case her bird had twenty eyes.

There were only so many nightmares she could take.

..... Oops.

Kinsay quickly looked back to the front, her face turning a shade of crimson. She didn't meant to be distracted. It was just. Things were just. Everything was hard. She tried to show that she was sorry, but it was hard to do that when you were too scared to speak out of turn.

And though a lesson on birds wasn't nearly as exciting as one on sharks, Kizzy was thankful for the opportunity to move around. Wasting no time, she hopped up from her spot on the bench to retrieve one of the birdcages. Even with the allotted fifteen minutes, it would be hopeless. Magic was already hard enough, but without her wand and extra time to practice at night... It was just. It was. Kinsay had accepted her fate very quickly.

She did get to practicing though. If anything, she could maybe manage that. "Avis... Avis.. Avis," with sad little movements to match it.

Constant Vigilance! O_O AWAKE!

They were conjuring birds? How would birds help them in battle? Mamie had never seen the classic Muggle film, so she had no idea how terrifying swarms of birds could be. She drew her wand, determined to practice as much as she could in class, since she wouldn't be able to practice after.

She made the swoopy V of a stick figure bird. Was that right? She did it again, then dropped her wand and practiced the incantation a couple times. "Avis, Avis, Avis," she muttered quietly. It wasn't as complicated as some of the others they had learned this year.

Mamie wondered what kind of bird she should conjure. She closed her eyes so she could picture it better. The first that came to mind was an owl. Was that too big for this activity? She tried to think of another kind of bird, but...her brain didn't cooperate. Conjuring an owl, it would be. She pictured a barn owl, with its kind of flat heart face and its dappled brown wings contrasting its white underbelly. She sighed wistfully, remembering back to Potions when they'd last seen any of the school owls.

She completely forgot what Carton had said about getting a birdcage, and decided she was ready to try. She had her bird in mind, after all. "Avis!" she said firmly, still with her eyes closed, combining the incantation with the swoopy V of a flying bird doodle and picturing that barn owl.

There was a loud BANG, so Mamie opened her eyes but...no owl? Her shoulders slumped.

Okay, Violet had practiced the spell and collected her birdcage and brought it back to her place. Now it was time for business. Violet stood before the birdcage, leaving its door open, took her wand in hand, closed her eyes and visualized Mack the magpie, then cast the spell: "Avis!"

She opened her eyes to see a flock of little blackbirds rush from her wand and begin circling her head and the birdcage in a frantic circle. Blackbirds, huh? Not quite magpies, she must not have visualized the markings clearly enough. But by Merlin, they were definitely birds! And the teacher hadn't asked them to specify what kind of birds they were trying to conjure, had she?

Pleased at her almost-success, Violet began trying to usher the tiny birds into the opening of the cage, but they were not at all cooperative. The professor hadn't told them how they were supposed to get the silly things into the cage, had she? And these birds might not look like magpies, but they were as difficult to control as the real thing. Finally Violet managed to get a portion of the little flock into the cage, slamming shut the door, but several of the little things had flown off into the trees, cackling naughtily as they went.

Now, how was she supposed to keep the birds already in the cage inside while opening the door to put new ones in? Even a shield spell wouldn't work, because she'd have to lift it at some point. Then Violet remembered a spell she'd just used in another class, one she thought might help her.

Norman roamed among the students, monitoring both their progress and signs of any unwanted presence. So far, so good. Miss Jenovick and Miss Donovan were off to a great start with their practice. He smiled, nodding approvingly at each girl in turn, but he didn’t say anything so as not to break their concentration. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw - or at least he thought he saw Miss Blackthorne wiping her eyes, but he pretended not to. Crying children made him uncomfortable; he never knew how to react! Should he intervene or step back? He was more inclined to do the latter. If she wanted his help, she knew how to ask for it.

Before Norman had too much time to think about it, Miss Blaze’s question distracted him. Release the birds? He mulled over the question for a moment. Until then, his plan had been to vanish the conjured birds at the end of the lesson, but it dawned on him that watching their creations vanish might be traumatic for some students. That was the last thing they needed now! “Yes, Miss Blaze,” he replied. “You may release your birds at the end of the activity.” Did everyone hear that? He’d repeat it when he moved on, just in case.

As he continued on his rounds, Norman saw that Miss Cambridge also seemed to be doing well, though the muttering made it a bit hard to tell if she was getting the pronunciation right. He couldn’t tell if the muttering was done out of lack of confidence or effort not to disturb the other students; either way, she would need to speak louder when she actually cast the spell.

Then his blue-green eyes landed on Miss James and her sad little wand movements. Successful conjuring would require more decisive wand movements than that, but for some reason, he hadn’t the heart to correct her. He could address any problems that came up when she actually tried casting, but for now it was enough that she was focusing on the task at hand. He gave her a small encouraging smile… and one for Miss Cambridge too.

A loud bang caused his head to turn, just in time to see Miss Turov unsuccessfully attempt the spell. He silently analyzed her work for a moment. Obviously she had the wand movement and pronunciation correct, otherwise the spell wouldn’t have made that sound. It was probably a concentration issue, which given the circumstances was completely understandable. “Good effort, Miss Turov,” he said. “Keep trying.”

Making his way back to the front, Norman checked his watch. “We’ll move on in ten more minutes,” he announced to the class.

OOC: You still have ABOUT 18 HOURS for the mini activity.
