| | |  The Girls' Dormitories
 Located at the top of a spiral staircase and just to the right are the Gryffindor girls' dormitories. Rooms are assigned according to year, and each door is marked with a wooden plaque.
Each room is home to several cozy four poster beds with gold sheets and pillows and a bright red velvet covering. There are matching red silk curtains that can be drawn to give the occupants a bit of privacy. Each bed has its own nightstand, and, in keeping with the Gryffindor element of fire, the rooms are lit with magical flames in fireproof, shatterproof jars.
Please remember that this is the girls dorm, in other words NO BOYS ALLOWED! But just in case, the staircase is bewitched to turn into a slide should anyone get any ideas.

Why Emmerson and Kinsay hadn't thought to push their beds together before this year was a mystery in it of itself. It's not that Kinsay minded sharing a bed the first few nights this term, but having a double-bed with her best friend was even more convenient. Kinsay moved around a lot in her sleep. Legs. Everywhere.
The double-bed also made all the terrible things this year a little less terrible because at least at she knew that at the end of a hard day, she could cuddle up beside her best friend and they could weep together.
Sometimes it's the small stuff.
Speaking of small stuff, Kinsay poked her head under the double-bed to find little (not-so-little) baby Artemis. "Pssst," she wiggled eagerly. "I brought you treats!" And by brought treats, Kinsay really meant that she had a stash of extra biscuits from the Great Hall. Kiz had originally taken them thinking they were chocolate chip only to find out that they were raisin. Ew, right? At least Artemis would probably like them so they didn't have to go to waste. See? Small stuff. Come here little not-so-little baby dragon! Mummy Kiz has cookies!

Know what? There were a LOT of steps between the lake and Gryffindor tower. What a time to not be a Hufflepuff.
Emmerson trudged her way up the castle, managing to stop crying somewhere around the fifth floor. After that, it was just a blurry eyed walk up. The little girl barely registered anyone in the common room, making a beeline for her dorm. At this time of the day, she could only hope her dormmates were somewhere else enjoying the fact their world wasn’t shattering. It would’ve been way too exhausting pretending she was fine otherwise.
Except.
Kizzy was here.
All the composure she had managed, all the determination she’d mustered to stop crying, it all vanished at the sight of her best friend. Emm slammed the door shut, not wanting to give anyone else a chance to walk in.
And just like that, she was back to the terrible sobs that had followed her across the school grounds.

The loud bang of the door being slammed shut gave Kinz quite the spook and she nearly fell off the bed as a result. Fortunately, however, she did not roll off the bed, but she did turn around to see a sobbing best friend instead.
Oh no. Oh no oh no oh no oh no.
The only thing worse than being sad was when Emm was sad. When Emm was sad it was like the whole world stopped spinning and everything went dark and all life ceased to exist. Whenever Emm was sad, Kinsay felt sad too. She also felt hopeless and all sorts of worried. Emmerson being sad was the worst thing of all.
So Kizzy wasted no time hopping to her feet and making her way over to the best friend with a big concern all over her face. "Emm, what happened? Are you hurt? Was it the hoods?" Did she need HUGS? Kinsay didn't usually go around punching people, but she would. For Emm. If she needed to. WHO HURT HER BEST FRIEND!?

She didn’t think it was possible to feel any worse but Kizzy wrapping her in a hug as she asked her those questions proved her wrong. Some Gryffindor she was. The castle had been overrun by outright villains, there were hooded figures crucio-ing kids that looked at them funny and she was here crying her eyes out because the boy she apparently had no business claiming a relationship with had put an end to it.
And you know what? That didn’t make her feel any less inclined to cry. She WAS sad and didn’t like this feeling.
Emm clung tightly to her best friend. Unable to find words at first, all she could manage was a frantic shake of her head no. It wasn’t the hoodie squad, it wasn’t anything earth shattering...and yet...it hurt more than any of those things—or all of them combined.
She would be a brave little Gryffindor later. Right now, she wanted her mama’s hugs. In the absent of those, Kizzy’s were all but working miracles.
”Sammy doesn’t like me and doesn’t wanna be my boyfriend.” Even saying it—soft as she did—brought on a new wave of humiliation and heartbreak. It was the absolute worst.

The more Emm cried, the more terrible everything was. Kinsay didn't even need to know who did this to make her hate them. She already did. Anyone who made Emm feel this was was the absolute worst kind of person on the face of the entire planet.
Kiz gave Emm a tight squeeze, only pulling back when Emm began to explain.
WHAT?
W H A T ?
No. No. That can't be true. It couldn't be true. They were a SOLID couple. Always were. Sure Sammy looked uncomfortable sometimes, but that's just how boys were, right? Um. Kizzy struggled to find something to say (a rarity in it of itself). She was really confused. Really, really confused.
"Maybe he's... maybe he's confused? Boys aren't smart with love stuff, remember?" That was all. Right? "I can talk to him!" Because Sammy is Sammy. She couldn't hate Sammy and he probably didn't want to break Emm's heart anyway and... maybe he just got scared by the alliance and thought they needed to break up so that... um. Um. Um.

"I already tried." She said, pulling away enough to wipe at her eyes. "He...he...he doesn't wanna be my boyfriend. I dunno what I did wrong." Emm pulled full away from Kizzy now so she could walk over to their joined double bed. The 12-year-old tossed herself down face first.
"I thought we were doing great." She cried into her pillow. They were going to have a double date with Matty and Kizzy, next year they were gonna have their first kiss. Eventually, he'd start acting like he wanted to be in the relationship and...and...
...
And it was all a lie.
He always seemed uncomfortable because he was uncomfortable. Fox had been right about everything all along.

This was bad. Really bad. It made her heart hurt big. In fact, Kizzy was so devastated that one might even assume she had been broken up with too. She watched her best friend flop on the double bed and quickly followed right behind. "Oh, Emm! You didn't do anything wrong. Sammy's just... He's just..." She struggled coming up with her next words because, well, Sammy was one of her best friends. She couldn't say anything awful about him.
But.... But he broke Emm's heart.
This was all very confusing. Kinsay was not prepared. "He's being stupid." She made her way onto the bed too and because she didn't know what else to do, she began gently rubbing Emmerson's back.

When the bed sank under the weight of her friend, Emm lifted her head to get a puffy eyed look at Kizzy. "Maybe he is." Being stupid that was. "But...but I think I was, too. All this time. Oh Kizzy, I've never felt so dumb in my whole life." She flopped over onto her friend, wanting to hide from the world for the rest of her life--or at least until the shame wore off.
"And now everything's ruined. We...we were gonna double date. You and Matty only just got together and there was all this stuff we were gonna do."
Now...now she would be the third wheel no one wanted around and when Matty and Kizzy tried for kisses she'd be the one in the corner babysitting a transfigured goldfish and shielding her eyes while she dreamed of the day anyone would ever like her.
"I dunno what to do."

Nothing was making sense. Up was down and left was right and Emm was crying and everything was just so wrong! This was supposed to be a GOOD year. This was going to be the year of double dates and ice cream parties and gossip-riddled sleepovers. The year when they finally weren't the smallest and least knowing and and and.
Instead it was just one awful thing after another.
All her insides ached as she wrapped her arms around her teary-eyed best friend sister and gave her the tightest cuddles.
"Not everything. We can um, we can still do all that stuff and I'll just tell Matty that it has to be me and you and... And he won't mind, I know he won't." Kinsay was having trouble coming up with ideas on the spot (something that she was usually pretty good at). Maybe Matty could date both of them? Or she could take a break with Matty until Emm started feeling better? Or they'd find Emm a new boyfriend who was just as nice and great as Sammy? Or. Um.
"Emm! You're one the best people I've ever known in my whole life." All! Twelve! Years! Of! It! "And anyone who can't see that is... is ridiculous. And missing out!"

Suddenly, a LOUD alarm went off. One that would be shockingly loud and clear no matter where you happened to be sleeping.
Seconds later, his voice boomed through the entire castle, as loud as the alarm:
"Everyone with any will to live will report to the courtyard. I don't care to wait for you to get properly dressed, we have enough charms to handle the weather. This is not a request. I'm quite done making those. You have ten minutes." Gracious allowance for those in the towers.
Just when you thought 4:30 AM couldn't be interesting.

A silver bat, just as clumsy as it's caster, bumbles its way into the dormitory before delivering a message.
"Students, eerrrrrr it is P-professor Schmoe. H-help is on the way. For your s-s-safety EVERYONE must evacuate the C-c-common Room. Meet me outside. Errr, I will lead you to the Safe Room. THIS IS URGENT. GRAB YOUR WANDS, LEAVE YOUR B-BELONGINGS BEHIND.
HURRY! There is no time to waste."
If there was any doubt as to who the sender was, they would have recognized his voice.
The bat flapped its wings, repeating the message several times over before it flew out.
