Seventh-Floor Corridor

https://s26.postimg.cc/jkthqlimx/corridor-banner.jpg
Because the seventh floor is the gateway to Hogwarts' biggest towers, you can expect to access quite a bit of the castle from here. The most notable areas that this corridor provides passage to are the Owlery, Astronomy Tower, Divination Tower, the common rooms for both Gryffindor and Ravenclaw, and, if you know where to look, the Room of Requirement. Sweeping views of the Quad below are available thanks to a series of large windows.

After stepping onto the seventh-floor corridor, a statue of Lachlan the Lanky immediately greets you. There really isn't anything overly special about him, but one can hide behind him and not be easily found if you're playing hide-and-go-seek or are just wanting to completely avoid someone. A renowned tapestry and numerous portraits, ranging from a mother and her baby, various wildlife animals, and the chivalrous Sir Cadogan adorn the walls. The latter portrait, should you ever need help getting around, is always eager to assist those who are, allegedly, in distress.

Quinn teetered down the corridor, tall stack of books in hand. He was honestly surprised he had been able to make it up here from the library alright, though he did take a couple breaks. Quinn had checked out a plethora of books—potions, healing magic, advanced battle magic, wizarding world history, forbidden magic, defensive charms, jinxes, hexes, the works—that he planned on taking back to his dorm to read over. For private purposes that didn't include trying to prepare in case of a battle with the Alliance at some point during the year. At all.

Quinn peered around the stack of books in his arms, trying to make sure that nothing fell and he didn't run into anything. It was slow going, but it was at least going. Maybe he shouldn't have checked out this many books...

Waddles 01-17-2021 02:05 AM

Mamie didn't really have a reason to be on the seventh floor. She had been wandering, looking for a nice little nook in which to hide study. She had just about given up and was going to start the long trek to the common room, when she spotted someone carrying a biiiiiig stack of books.

"Hello?" she said, peering around to see...oh! It was her friend? acquaintance? Quinn. "That's a lot of books."

Surely he didn't need that many books to do all the homework...had Mamie missed an assignment recently?

NiallNIP 01-17-2021 02:54 AM

Quinn stopped walking as he heard Mamie's voice, then eyed her as she peered around the books. The stack wiggled in his arms as he stopped, and he adjusted them in his arms to make sure they didn't fall.

"Oh! Uh... hi, Mamie." His eyes went back to the books in his hand. "Er, yes, I guess this is a pretty large stack of books, isn't it..?" He figured she wanted to know why he checked out this many books, but he didn't have a good lie prepared for that, so he figured steering the conversation away from the books would be beneficial. "S-so, what brings you up here? Did you have Astronomy or something..?" During the day? Did they do Astronomy during the day? You needed to be able to actually see the stars to do Astronomy, Quinn.

Waddles 01-17-2021 03:04 AM

Astronomy? During the day? Mamie shook her head. "Just...ahhh, looking for somewhere quiet to study. Undisturbed," she explained. He was a Ravenclaw, right? Maybe he knew a good studying place. Far away from the Hooded Squad.

Mamie was curious about why Quinn had so many books...but she chalked it up to him being a Ravenclaw. They liked learning, so he probably just...wanted some extracurricular education. She took a step closer, trying to read any of the titles. Maybe she should learn something extra, too. "Do you need help carrying those?" Surely he knew the books were practically as tall as him?!

NiallNIP 01-17-2021 03:25 AM

Quinn nodded, trying to push past his awkward question. "Oh, I see. Well, usually when I'm reading I like to sit in the common room. But, uh, I don't think you could exactly go there. Not sure how the Hufflepuff common room is, but the Ravenclaw one is pretty nice and quiet. If I'm not there I'm usually out around the grounds somewhere. It's pretty quiet out there." His arms were starting to hurt again.

Quinn took a small step away as she stepped closer; there was some stuff here that would probably be strange to see a first year reading. "Ah, no I think I'm—" he started, but in taking a step back he lost balance of the books and they toppled onto the floor. Well, at least his arms didn't hurt much anymore. "Ah, jeez..." Quinn sighed, kneeling to pick up the books.

Waddles 01-17-2021 03:36 AM

Mamie sighed. Turns out Quinn did not have any practical places to hide study. She'd have to keep exploring.

It was weird that he stepped away, right? Mamie frowned and opened her mouth to pry more, but then Quinn dropped them all and she immediately knelt down to help him, too. Because Hufflepuffs were helpful like that.

She started stacking books for him, trying to inconspicuously look at the titles. She wasn't being nosy, just....yeah, she was being nosy. Battle magic? Jinxes? She paused at a particularly interesting-looking book on defensive charms. She flipped open to the table of contents. Hmmmm they hadn't learned these spells yet. She gave Quinn a curious glance. He was a Muggleborn, too, if she remembered correctly.

"Quinn," she said quietly. "Did you check these out of the library?"

NiallNIP 01-17-2021 04:52 AM

Quinn was stacking the books, too, the thought of hiding them from Mamie slipping his mind. There wasn't much he could really do if he wanted to at this point, anyway.

When Mamie questioned him about the books, his eyes widened a bit. He snatched the charms book out of her hand and stacked it on top of the other books, then scooped up those remaining and messily piled them on as well. "Y-yes, I did. I really should be going... I have...things..." Quinn trailed off as he stood and picked up the stack, beginning to hurry down the corridor.

Waddles 01-17-2021 05:05 AM

Mamie was seriously worried about Quinn. He'd checked all these books out from the library...leaving a paper trail for anyone who might be checking up on what books the...er....not pureblood students were reading. Didn't he know she wasn't the enemy? But he seemed to really be in a hurry.

"Bye, then," she said as he walked away. Hopefully he would learn something good.

Daniiiiii <3

It was hard to avoid rumours that spread around the castle but the one that aggravated him the most was one about Emm and Ash. Sure, he couldn't trust rumours entirely - especially because this was one he'd overheard while eating breakfast - but he couldn't ignore them, either. What if they turned out to be true? What if Emm really did attack Ash and call her a you-know-what? What then?

Sigh!

As much as he didn't like to show it, there was no hiding the amount of anxiety Sammy was feeling. Scuffing his feet against the floor, biting his lip, looking up and down the corridor every few seconds for the first signs of a certain Gryffindor...... it was all there. His only hope was that she had gotten his message to meet him here, by a portrait directly between the Gryffindor and Ravenclaw common rooms, and wasn't planning to, you know, leave him waiting.

No. No no. Emm wouldn't do that.

....... Right?

DaniDiNardo 02-06-2021 11:09 PM

Oh no, she wouldn't leave him waiting at all. The moment Emmerson had gotten word Sammy wanted to speak with her, she collected her charms text she'd been reading, packed away the rest of her stationeries and then made her way out to the portrait.

It was weird, y'know? Having Sammy wanting to speak to her but not having her heart race with excitement and an overabundance of exuberance. These days, it was hard to get enthused about most anything and the Gryffindor didn't have any reason to believe this would be the sort of meet up she was hoping for.

Here's the thing, Sammy wouldn't go passing on messages for nothing. He'd just wait til he saw her at dinner later or catch her on the way to or from class. This was something, of course it was something. It was always something these days and the 12-year-old was honestly just...very tired.

Very over everything.

"Sammy." She greeted mildly, coming to a stop a few steps from him. The Gryffindor mentally steeled herself for whatever was coming, not for a second optimistic he was here to ask for a renewal of their relationship.

It was funny how things seemed less optimistic and fairytale like overall. Lately, Emm had become prone to expecting the bad long before she considered the good. Everything was bad. Period.

hermionesclone 02-06-2021 11:33 PM

Sammy half-expected Emm to skip her way down the corridor, chanting something or another, and squealing the moment she saw him. Or, you know, something to that extent. He also expected her to say something that would only make him feel uncomfortable.

But this? The mild greeting? The lack of excitement? The distance?

This was not like Emmerson Cambridge.

As confused as he was, the Ravenclaw tried not to show it. He could ask, but this didn't seem like the time to bring that up. After all, they had bigger things to worry about. "Emm," he said, digging his hands into his pockets. There was a hint of a smile on his face, but he was also watching her closely. Watching, and taking note of her reactions.

"Soooooo..... how are you doing?"

DaniDiNardo 02-06-2021 11:43 PM

The smile hadn't gone unnoticed but it wasn't returned either. Emm wasn't in the mood for smiles, she wanted Sammy to rip the bandaid off so she could go back to her dorm and have a good cry. Merlin, that felt like all she ever did now. One more time probably wouldn't affect her much.

"I've been better." Emm said, offering a one shouldered...rather melancholic shrug. "Things suck. They always do. What happened this time?" Cutting straight to the point. Sammy wasn't the sort to go yelling and she didn't expect him to start shrieking and shoving--that was her gig--but she did wish he would just come out with it.

"What've I done this time and how would you like me to fix it?"

That was how it worked, wasn't it? Everyone was angry about something or the other. She wasn't behaving the way people wanted her to. She couldn't catch a break an doubted that would change with him.

hermionesclone 02-07-2021 11:04 PM

Her smile hadn't gone unnoticed, either.

Or, you know, lack of.

The expression, the shrug...... it was enough to make his smile drop. He could read the room - or the corridor - and it was telling him that this wasn't the time for that. There was also the fact that she didn't look happy to see him - not like she usually did - and that..... made him feel some type of way. This was not like Emm at all.

But what truly hurt was what she said afterwards. Emm always cut straight to the point, she always had. But asking what she'd done wrong? That was...... different. He blinked at her. He'd prepared what he wanted to say, didn't he? So why was he now at a complete loss for words? How did this Gryffindor always manage to do this?!

But the moment he'd prepared for was here. Sammy let out a small sigh, his fingers curling up in his pockets. "Yeah, things suck," There was no denying that. "And I'm doing great, thanks." Pause. "Especially after hearing how well you and Ash have been getting along." As much as he was trying to hide his feelings, there was no hiding the sarcasm in his tone.

DaniDiNardo 02-07-2021 11:23 PM

....

....

Ah. That was it. That was all it was. It was the smallest thing she had had to deal with in a while and Emmerson was almost relieved...rather she might have been if not for the sarcastic tone with which it was brought up. Emm rolled her eyes, big and proper to make sure Sammy could SEE her do it. "Is that all?"

Actually...actually no, she took it back, she wasn't relieved because "We don't talk in what feels like ages and you break the silence to tell me about freakin' Ashley Fox? Not even Ashley, Ash. Getting real buddy buddy with your friend, aren't you?"

This was not how she expected their first conversation post breakup to go. Admittedly, after more recent events, it wasn't even on her radar BUT this was still not how it was meant to go.

"Save your breath, I'm not sorry."

hermionesclone 02-13-2021 09:24 PM

After being her friend for many, many years, Sammy had grown used to Emm's dramatics. But this? A head-splitting eyeroll? Was that necessary?! He was going to say no. And that was why, as silent as he was, he couldn't stop his eyebrows from popping up at her reaction.

And he wasn't even going to go into that question right now. There was no point.

But the Gryffindor was already moving on and, it seemed, for the worse. There was a part of him that felt a weight in his heart at her words, especially after the part about not talking for ages. But there was a larger part of him that could feel his insides bubbling up. How did those work together? He didn't know. All he knew was that Emm had given him all the answers he was looking for, whether she knew it or not.

And she wasn't sorry? At all?!

Sweet Merlin, this was so much worse.

Sammy paused to let out a deep sigh before jumping into his own speech. Sorry, Emmerson, but he wasn't saving his breath. "Yes, Ash. Just like I say Emm and not Emmerson, and Kizzy and not Kinsay." Understood? "Besides, why does it bother you that I'm friends with her? I don't remember you having a problem with my other friends-who-are-girls, so why is this a problem?!" And all of a sudden too, if he might add.

There was a lot more he could go into, but it seemed like they had bigger fish to fry so he was moving on. "And you're not sorry? Even after calling her a you-know-what?! What is wrong with you?!" It was at this moment that his expression turned to one of disappointment. He didn't know what had happened to her, but this was not Emm.

DaniDiNardo 02-13-2021 10:11 PM

This...this really wasn't gonna get better was it? Sammy wasn't saying anything she wanted to hear and Emmerson wasn't feeling particularly in the mood to listen to nonsense.

"Nothing, don't worry about it, it's stupid." She grumbled, not feeling the need to explain herself. Looking back, it really had been dumb. In the absence of her mother, she'd had to sit herself down and yell at herself for her behaviour. Who cared if Sammy was dating Ashley Fox now? Her. Her a lot. Or rather.........she did. Since then, a lot had happened and she didn't have the mental capacity to care about who Sammy was off learning to snog.

Okay, wait no, she still cared a lot about that and it hurt a little thinking about it even with him defending Fox right now BUT she was being strong so.

What was wrong with her? "A lot. Apparently. Look. I'm tired, Samuel. I'm very tired. I don't think we'll be going home for Christmas. I'll never get to be in my recital now." Which she was hoping vehemently would be cancelled so she'd still have a shot. "Our professors are traitors who only care about themselves. Everything I say is a problem. I can't depend on anyone but me. So, NO, I don't give a flying fudge that I called Ashley Fox a mudblood. It's what Headmaster Rosier calls them and says we can, too. It's about the only thing I have permission to do and I DON'T feel bad for doing it. I've got bigger problems to worry about and don't suspect I'll have any friends left by the end of the term anyway."

hermionesclone 02-24-2021 10:37 PM

pre-courtyard stuff

Nothing?

This. This truly annoyed him. Was she lying? Or did she not want to tell him anymore? There were a lot of questions floating around and not enough answers to suit him. It was why Sammy paused to close his eyes and let out a small sigh. "Well, it sounds like it's bothering you. So why don't you just say it? We can work around whatever it is." It was better than beating around the bush.

Sigh!

Keeping himself calm was starting to become much harder, and it had everything to do with this speech that Emm was rolling off. Was she really that worried about a recital right now? They had much bigger issues on their plate. In fact, he could start listing them off right now but he pressed his lips together and tried his very hardest not to say anything.

And yes, he did notice that she said Samuel and not Sa-

.......

.............

And there it was.

Sammy's eyes widened at the words. At that word. Instinctively, his head whipped back and forth, trying to scan the corridor as quickly as possible. It was only after that that he leaned forward and hissed the first words that came to his head. "Are you INSANE?! Why do you keep calling people mudblood? AND saying you'll torture someone because you're a pureblood and you should win?"

His insides had gone past bubbling and were now burning. There was no hiding his emotions. There was no hiding the sad, disappointed look on his face or the fact that his eyes were starting to look shinier. "No, you won't have any friends left because you keep saying the same things that a crazy, evil man is saying. This isn't like you, Emmerson." And if this is who she really was, then........

......... sigh.

DaniDiNardo 02-25-2021 12:13 AM

He wasn't dropping it. He wasn't dropping it and she didn't want to talk about it. It would seem they were at an impasse. The 12-year-old went silent for a moment, considering how worth it it actually was.

In the end, it didn't even matter. "I thought...I heard...you don't even like me. I shouldn't care if you and Ashley are a thing. It's none of my business and I shouldn't have gone making her feel important by attacking her the way I did." There. She'd said it. Sammy probably liked every other girl but her. Was she too blonde? Was it her height? It was that spot on her shoulder, she was almost sure of it. SOMETHING. Anything. And not knowing why drove her wild.

And then he began overreacting.

Acting like she'd murdered a baby and sacrificed it to the gods of glitter...like she was the worst person in the entire castle. Maybe she was. A lot of people were starting to think so. The fact Sammy was joining that rank hurt, but she was prepared to numb herself to that, too.

"What do you want me to say??" She shot back, not bothering to look around, lower her voice or give any indication she knew they could be listened to. "I'm NOT S O R R Y. I'm not. I don't like her. I've never liked her. I don't LIKE Eden, either and DO think she should've gotten hexed into the next century. I was minding my OWN BUSINESS. SHE attacked ME!! So yes, I did want her to get in trouble and knew she'd really be in for it if I called the squad. I don't see anyone yelling at her. I don't see anyone cussing her out for attacking someone who never bothered her. It's just ME. Oh, you horrid person. How could you? What if she got hurt--SHE HURT ME!!! She hexed me. Why would I feel bad for trying to harm someone who harmed me?"

She could have gone on but instead forced herself silent. "Look. We're not getting anywhere so why don't you go find Eden and Ashley and you guys can talk about how I'm the worst human ever. I'm sure they'll love that. Just leave me alone."

Samia 03-21-2021 05:11 AM

Come joooooin us kids <3

The only thing June had been hoping for today was to see Aries and Atlas and make sure they were okay, in the most discreet of ways of course - but then she had heard the blasts at the gates and for once instead of her heart sinking - it had actually started to beat a different tone.

It was happening. IT WAS FINALLY HAPPENING.

Seeing a few of the staff make their way to the room. June decided to bolt her way up the stairs instead. The ones not locked up needed to know too.

The noise of the blast had easily cleared the way too. She saw the hoods moving quickly, and she dodged as many as she could -- but a few fell under her stunning spell too, especially when she reached the seventh floor. And she wasn't going to lie - it felt GOOD, REALLY GOOD -- to finally to do this.

ArianaBlack 03-21-2021 05:35 AM

Just after a hug from Phoebe James and tripping on his way out, Finneas Schmoe had taken a moment to disillusion himself so that he could slip by undetected. Fortunately, he managed to do just that, only taking a nasty elbow to the face. But a bloody lip was nothing in comparison to his blistered feet. Today was not a good day for loafers.

Finneas was limping. He was panting. He felt like he was going to blow out a lung, but he was making his way up the stairs (SO MANY STAIRS). All the way from The Room. He had wanted to stop several times on the way up, but knowing what was coming is what kept him going. Just below the seventh floor, he waved his wand, producing a silvery patronus in the shape of a bat. There wasn't enough time, so he sent it off in a hurry.

As soon as the bat clumsily flew off, Finneas began sprinting again. It wasn't a pretty sprint, but it was the best his deteriorating flesh prison body could do. It was only when he reached the top of the staircase, ensured that the coast was clear, and caught sight of June, that Finneas lifted his disillusionment charm and hurried his way over to his dear friend colleague. "June," he managed whilst still panting. "The students - I sent - patronus - to common rooms - Neva - safe room - army - we - saved."

Finneas was schmoe close to passing out, honestly. Was anything he said coherent at all?

Samia 03-21-2021 06:16 AM

June saw it. The bat making it's way to to places and it was easy to figure out who it was. There was absolutely no subtlety when it came to a clumsy bat. Wand at the ready - June was then hoping to see some panic from the kids, but instead she heard Schmoe.

Turning on the spot, the sight of him made this entire thing more real and June could not comprehend just how elated her stupid, hopeful heart was. Though breathless, it was more than anything she had heard from the her friend all term long.

Unable to bring into words what this moment actually meant, June let her gryffindor instincts kick in - a thing she had been fighting for a long time now - and basically LEAPED at the frail man and HUGGED the living life out of him.

It was NECESSARY.

lazykitty 03-21-2021 08:52 AM

Hurrying out of the common room, Whitney kept going until she caught sight of Professors Flamsteed and the clumsy batman himself, Schmoe. Who were.....hugging? "Sorry, didn't mean to interrupt anything......" Seriously?! At a time like this?! "Schmoe's bat said something about an evacuation.....?" There was a sentence that would sound weird in any other context. She was ready to get the heck outta here, like, yesterday! Which.....how were they supposed to do that again? The squad, or whatever they were calling themselves, were everywhere!

sweetpinkpixie 03-21-2021 09:58 AM

Okay. TO BE FAIR. There were a lot of things that kept Atlas n edge these days and the SUDDEN appearance of a silvery 'ghost' bat in the Gryffindor common room was one of those things. You know, THOSE things. So it really wasn't his fault that there was now a hole in one of the couches caused by a spontaneous Incendio.

Atlas had no idea where that spell had come from or how it had happened and Aries was certainly NOT a witness to anything.

......erm.

Once the true intention of the bat was revealed and the Gryffindor's brain caught up with his poor instincts, he was hightailing it OUT of the common room (but only after double backing to his dorm to get Ore-son Welles from his nightstand) and almost falling over his own feet into the corridor...just in time to see Auntie June HUGGING the Muggle Studies professor.

Well...mum and dad had realized they were in love during a dementor attack so...stranger things had happened. But it didn't mean he wanted to SEE it.

"...yo-yo-you two aren't going to KISS, are you?"

Call Atlas distracted for the moment as he stood beside his Ravenclaw peer.

Hey Ju 03-21-2021 12:37 PM

Catherine's sense of self-preservation had kept her in her Common Room for most of that term, so when the bat Patronus came flying, she was one of the first ones to hear its message.

She wasn't, however, one of the first ones to leave the place. Of course, with a message like that, she would make sure she didn't take too long either, though. She already had her wand on her, so when a few Ravenclaws headed out of the Common Room and down the tower stairs, she followed suit.

When Catherine saw her Head of House hugging professor Flamsteed, she slowed her pace down a little. She was not there to see this kind of thing, honestly. This was a school, for Merlin's sake.

So she sent them her most judgemental look as she approached the group and heard the young Gryffindor's question. She understood these were intense times, but they needed to get a grip.
