Default Lesson one: Rocks a fun

The first day of lessons was always an exciting and busy time, even with the feast fresh in their minds lessons were the one thing that would always stay the same. As you head to the divination tower you will find it looks pretty much as it always does, except instead of round tables there are long rows with tables and chairs. Each long tables has piles of rocks on it.

Cassie is standing by her desk arms folded waiting for the students to enter the room. She is wearing a smile on her face, but no snapping is going on today. No, she was just standing and waiting more bored looking than her normal excited.

As you enter the room you will notice the board stating to find a seat and get ready for class. No touching the rocks!

It was pretty safe to say Valencia that she disliked the hoods for multiple reasons. They were distracting, awful to look at, and, of course, kept attacking people. She gripped her quill just a little too hard and snapped it. And snapped another one. Before she finally was able to mark her initials on stones as instructed.

Well, Professor Kitridge, Flora wouldn't have needed to be told to lick a rock, it was something that she would've done all on her own! But now, with the mention of pee on the rocks, and with those HOODlums just hexing students and getting rid of doors, the Gryffindor figured that wouldn't have been such a good idea. Imagine what they would do to a rock licker!

She also didn't think having a lesson on bad omens was a good idea either. The HOODlums weren't sign enough of a bad omen!?

But sigh, that's what they were going to be doing. Flora didn't even bother to really look at the five rocks needed for the lesson, and instead just picked the five closest to her to write her initials on. FBT. Did anyone else have the same initials as her?

Because if her reading mentioned anything else about a bad omen, she'd be willing to trade rocks.

Kinsay's eyes grew double their size as she watched one of the hooded figures send a spell at one of her classmates. Fortunately after the last few lessons, she had learned to keep her mouth shut but... the horror was still evident in her features.

It was hard to continue with class as if nothing happened and she wanted more than anything to walk over to the girl as ask if she was okay.

.... But remembering Emmerson's words, she didn't move. Instead, Kizzy reached for the BIGGEST rocks she could find and initialed them each with a clean 'KCJ'. Even if they wouldn't be used for throwing, Kinsay might try anyway.

She kept her eyes on the hooded men for a few more minutes before she just sighed and moving towards her desk. She watched the students as they hesitated, looked terrified and confused, tried to do the lesson, but she knew they were all struggle. Her heart was breaking for them, this wasn't how this was supposed to be. This was not the world she wanted any of these children to be part of. She wanted to cry herself for them, every single child in this room was her child. They became hers the minute they walked through those castle doors and only a professor truly understood that. She wanted to give them the world and open up their minds to learn so much, but this, this was not the way nor how it should be.

She bit her lip and pulled a quill out marking five rocks from her desk just as she had told them. Watching them a little longer she tried to get her focus on the lesson, but the aura was all wrong, her usual peaceful place felt so negative it was giving her a headache. Taking a deep breath she decided to just try to focus on her students and the lesson. She needed to keep herself in between those hooded idiots and her students, be the shield if she had needed to be. They would not hurt anymore of her students if she could help it in some way even if it cost her her own life. She was a professor, it was her job to keep them safe and she would do everything she could to do this job.

"Alright, now that you have your initial on your rocks you can now bring them closer to you." Now that they picked the rocks she didn't mind if they figured out if they were heavy or light, it would work if they moved them before doing their reading. "It is better to not know the weight before because then you can't just pick one of the other to get the reading to go the way you would like. Divination is very sensitive in that way, it can be manipulated, but that makes the reading false." She wanted that point to be given that if someone does manipulate the answer it is not a true divination reading.

"Can anyone tell me what an Omen is and why would we want to know about them?"

*Your posts are really bringing out the teacher feels in me! Keep up the great work, we will move on in 24 hours.

Quinn actually did have an idea about this question. He raised his hand. "An omen is basically a signal of something that's to come. And I guess it would be important to know it so that you could plan ahead for it." Quinn thought for a second. That was what he knew from the Muggle definition, but it could mean something entirely different in the context of divination. "Er, at least, that's the definition I know of what an omen is..."

After answering, Quinn slid the rocks towards himself. Most of them felt like a fairly standard weight, but the oblong one with a hole was actually pretty heavy, and the brittle blueish-gray one was lighter than he expected.

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

"Um... omens are like foreshadowing your future, but I guess they can be good sometimes? I guess you would want to know the future so you could prepare, but only if you could change it." No pint in knowing your future if you couldn't change it. Ash would rather just live in the moment. She brought the rocks closer to her, not bothering to pick them up. They weren't supposed to know the weights, yeah? Ash wondered if she could keep the rocks. They were special. Like her bracelets, or her drawings. Things that kept you sane.

Beth pulled the initialed rocks closer and perked up at her classmates answers, raising her hand. This was something she sorta knew about, at least. "Yeah that's true, like a foreshadow." She said eagerly, nodding. "My grandmother once told me that omens can be good or bad, they're like signs. Maybe knowing about them helps people make better decisions about the future."

She'd stayed unusually silent up until that point in fear of the hooded people, mainly because of the errr...badly hexed faced of the Slytherin girl across the room. But hoods be darned, she was already scared of walking through the halls at her own school, she wouldn't be scared away from this too.

Don't cry. Don't cry. Don't Cry.

She breathed deeply through her nose and she continued to glare at the rocks as the professor rushed over, attempting to ignore the pain and the fact that it felt like her lips were growing in size. Gross. She refused to look up at the hooded figures or at any of the other students in the room as her cheeks reddened in embarrassment. The Slytherin slowly removed one hand away from her mouth, keep the other securely in place. With a shaking hand she slowly chose five random rocks to initial, not paying attention to their size or color or shape. She had a feeling that not participating would only worsen her situation, largely due to the fact that the hooded figures were still lingering about the room.

Bella's eyes widened with shock, anger and sympathy as Delaney yelped out in pain beside her. One of the hooded figures were the cause she was most definitely sure of it. Anger surged and Bella wanted to lash out at them, but knew it’d be futile and would probably only cause them to send a jinx or hex her way too.

Leaning over to sympathetically squeeze the other snake girl's arm under the table and out of view from the hooded dudes she mouthed under her breath with worry to her new friend. "Are you okay Delaney?" Pulling a handkerchief from her robe Bella used her wand out of sight to cast 'glacius' on it. Handing it to Delaney she mumbled. "Here, I hope it helps." Turning to the pile of rocks in front of her to not raise attention Bella did the task as instructed and chose 5 rocks from the pile that we're smooth, shiny, peculiar coloured, rough and jagged that she put her initials IC on with the use of her quill.

When the lesson moved on she wanted to grimace when she learned that Zygomancy could be used on corpses or on women wanting to know if they could have babies. Bella was super glad that they weren't going to be doing reading on corpses today. Raising her hand to answer she said "An omen is signal of what is to come in the future and that you should be on alert. One omen I've heard about is the Grim, but can it really foretell someones death?"

One by one, Dahlia quietly gathered up the five rocks she had scrawled her initials on a few moments earlier. With the rocks now in front of her she slid them around to form a small line going to smallest to largest.

She continued to study the colors, patterns and shapes of each individual rock, so that she wouldn't accidentally look up and see the hooded meanies. It was best to avoid contact with them at all costs.

So when she raised her hand to give her answer, Lia slowly lifted her gaze trying to keep only Professor Kitridge in her view. "An omen is a sign of either something good or bad that is meant to happen in the future. It can be about pretty much anything. Some people want to know what's going to happen so they can try to plan for it, others would rather not know if something terrible were to be coming along."

Glancing at the rocks she continued to grab the remaining four that she would need, examining the ones that called to her. Although rocks weren't her thing so it was mostly pretty rocks that called to her.

Once there were close to five laid in a line she began the serious elimination on which five she would want so she could begin writing her initials in the rocks. Oh omens were never good. Raising her hand she didn't want to speak up that much, and she loved divination ugh. "Omens are exactly what others are saying, foreshadowing. But even if its for good or bad sometimes it can be bad all around. If its good you'll be distracted by what could begin to happen if its bad you see that bad everywhere so really is an omen all that great?"

Dipping her head back down she started putting her initials back on the rocks and taking the attention away from her.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

Emmerson Cambridge was highkey ready to stay in her lane and not pay attention to anything around her--outside of the people she cared about. Why? Simple, it was the only way to keep her sanity. Too many of her classmates were actively trying to die and she didn't want to be lumped in with them by association.

So, rocks.

It didn't really matter to her which she picked but Merlin you better believe she did her best to look like she was concentrating HARD on her selection. So hard that she didn't notice anyone getting hexed. So hard she didn't hear Professor Smiles try engaging the men in conversation at her desk. THANKFULLY Kizzy was also keeping quiet. It did a lot to keep her from breaking down entirely.

The only thing the 12-year-old did hear was the next question the professor asked.

"Omens are important if you have a big performance. Like...if you've got all these bad omens but you don't know they're bad omens so you go on anyway and actually break a leg."

Bernie kept to herself, trying not to look at the hooded people and whatever they were doing by the door. She picked the biggest rocks on her table and wrote BOG real large on the bottom of them. It WAS tempting to throw one, but since that wasn't the lesson, and she didn't want someone to cast a spell on her mouth... she just waited for the next activity.

"Some people read too much into omens," she answered when it was her turn. "Like they think they see the Grim in their tea leaves but really it's a bear, not a big dog at all. And then all they can think about is seeing the grim so they see dogs everywhere, and get distracted by the sight of a dog on their hike, but really they should have been worried about bears, because they ended up being eaten by a bear that was sneaking up behind them on their camping trip while they were looking at a dog."

Er, DID that mean they had seen the grim in their tea leaves, then? Bernie still wasn't quite sure how literal this subject was supposed to be. Maybe she should have dropped it before her OWL year.

Kiz pulled all her initialed rocks towards herself. She had chosen ALL the big ones and if they were associated with omen based on weight then, um, Kinsay sure hoped that heavy rocks meant GOOD omens. Not that she was terribly sure she believed in this stuff anyway. How come rocks couldn't have predicted that there'd be a horrible takeover of Hogwarts this year?

Professor Kitridge should've seen it coming. HEY! Wasn't she a SEER?

Kinsay was only pulled away from these thoughts when Emm offered an answer only to be followed by the mean and horrible Bernie. Kiz didn't actually have an answer herself until something Bernie said struck her curiosity. That's when her hand shot straight up into the air. Kinsay James was a liiiiittle skeptical. "Professor Kitridge, do bears really eat people?" Because people always say sharks eat people, but that's not fair. They only do that when they're provoked or reaaaaaaally, really hungry. Maybe bears were nicer than people thought they were too. So it wasn't proper nice to make them villians in the story if they're just misunderstood.

Claudine continued to avert her eyes from The Hoods. They were useless and nothing when it came to the lesson she told herself. She had to keep repeating this because if she didn’t her anxiety would act up. Having something to do helped, however. Just seizing the rocks and bringing them closer to her gave her something to touch and feel that anchored her to reality and kept her from wanting to panic. With the last rock in her hand, she squeezed it, letting the rough edges calm her. This in turn helped her to put an answer together before she raised her free hand.

“It’s a sign, I guess, of something that’s going to happen or will happen in the future. We’d want to know about them for that exact reason - predictions.”

Even on his best days Morgan was perpetually distracted, but with the way this school year was already starting to be, it was even worse. And that probably was a very bad thing. He was sure to get himself into more trouble. As he eyed up the hooded figures at the perimeter of the classroom, he absently tugged on the fringe he'd taken to styling his hair by, hoping to cover the words still branded across his forehead, even if they'd faded somewhat thanks to Phoebe's essence of murtlap.

But he visibly cringed when they sent what he figured was a stinging jinx to that younger Slytherin girl. Was she a first year? He wasn't even sure what she did to deserve that, but he did feel kind of bad for her. Ouch. Good that she had a friend seeming to comfort her though. But.. why would they vanish the classroom door? Or did they vanish it? Either way, Morgan thought that was very strange and unsettling, though probably not more so than anything else that had happened so far. He just hoped they weren't going to hold them here indefinitely.

You know who was awesome though? Professor Kitridge. Morgan appreciated her trying to stand up for and protect them, but he was also a little concerned. He was sure the hooded hooligans could just as easily turn on her as they did on everyone else. He really tried to refocus his attention on his rocks as he went about initialing them and on the class itself. He thought he knew what an omen was, though he didn't really have anything more to add to what people already said, at least about the definition part of it.

Still, he raised his hand to offer an answer, even if he was considerably more subdued than usual. "If you're really good at reading omens and seeing them and knowing what they mean, it can help you be more prepared. Even if they're bad omens, even if you can't change it. Might help lessen the blow if you're prepared... though it'd be cool if you could look out for them and change course." He added that last part as an afterthought as he was talking, because that could be a cool part of omens. But did that work?

Atlas was just not having this lesson. Sure, blowing up dummies who were meant to instill a certain image as a means of desensitizing them was one thing, but this had his stomach twisted in knots he couldn't quite understand. Defense Against the Dark Arts had been easy for him to detach himself...and probably because he and Aries had blown figurines that LOOKED like people plenty thanks to fireworks...but...well...he was just trying not to think too critically about it. This was Professor Kitridge, after all.

He was also a bit too pink in the cheeks to look back at his Hufflepuff table partner for now. The whole accidental hand holding bit and everything. But as long as he looked at the rocks and kept his head down...everything was fine. Just fine.

Minus hearing dad's voice in his ear...everything was just fine.

He knew how all this was defined in the Flamsteed home and it was not the sort of thing he felt would be appropriate to repeat. Especially with the Divination professor already having to cope with the emotional strain that was The Hoods™. But...Atlas felt them more self fulfilling interpretations of natural occurrences as a means of explaining something not understood or trying to project a current emotional state on to a situation. Basically...an excuse to take responsibility and tangibility away from yourself...while also validating your own emotional state for either hopeful or dreadful purposes. After all, comets were considered both good and bad omens and Halley's Comet was a "bad omen" for King Harold II of England but a "good omen" for William the Conqueror.

.....or Professor Kitridge talking about corpses in class while the Neo-Alliance was taking over the school.

.........so...it was nonsensical...

Instead of answering, however, Atlas simply tried to making his initials on the rocks he had selected thicker.

Things were a bit too quiet for Cassie's liking with the hooded people and she glanced around to find them. She needed to keep on guard with them, but also try to keep her lesson moving and the children safe. There was still the issue of them taking the door, but for now they were in class and didn't need it.

They weren't supposed to know the weights, yeah? Ash wondered if she could keep the rocks. They were special. Like her bracelets, or her drawings. Things that kept you sane.
"Very good, Omens do predict what is to come and can be used to prepare." She gave snaps for the answer and to help bring the focus and vibes back to the more positive side.

She'd stayed unusually silent up until that point in fear of the hooded people, mainly because of the errr...badly hexed faced of the Slytherin girl across the room. But hoods be darned, she was already scared of walking through the halls at her own school, she wouldn't be scared away from this too.
"Very good, your grandmother is a very wise woman." She smiled and gave a few snaps.

She watched nervously as a first year used her wand to help another on the first day of classes. Her eyes glanced to the others hoping maybe they didn't catch her doing some more advanced wand work for her age as well as the fact that wands weren't to be used in Divination typically. She would address these things later, but trying not to bring that to anyone's attention she just nodded, "Yes, very good."

"Yes, yes, very good."

"That is a very good question and one that has been asked many of times. Omens have been a discussion for a very long time and have tried to be changed, explained, and ignored by so many before us."

"That is a very good example." She always enjoyed when her students gave specifics in class that could relate to a topic.

"Those are some very interesting thoughts. Now I ask you did the person get eaten by a bear because they were looking for a dog or did they get eaten by the bear because it was their destiny that was predicted by the tea leaves by seeing the Grim?" She gave a little smile and moved to the next.

"They do Miss James, typically because the person was in the wrong place or because the bear feels threatened, but they can be eaten."

"Very good Mr. McCarthy, you can use them to prepare and try to change things."

Cassie was really struggling when it come to the younger children. She really wanted to hug them all and make sure they knew she wouldn't let anything bad happen to them if she could help it, but she knew she couldn't draw that much attention so instead she moved closer to a few and just gave a gentle squeeze to their shoulder or a pat on the shoulder to let them know she was there.

All the answers were great under the circumstances and Cassie was actually afraid to move the lesson on. With the way class was going she was afraid to find the answers the students would get. Her eyes moved where her trap door should be and she thought about just ending class now before they moved on, but again she realized she couldn't.

"Omens are a prediction or a foreshadowing of what is to come, but like Miss Grantham some people spend too much time worrying about them. Can an omen be changed, yes of course it can. Some people in this profession might say other wise, but I have always believed that our paths have many directions an if something is given to us as a clue or a prediction such as an omen we have a choice to change that path or to stay on it. As Miss Cambridge said about the breaking of a leg, if you get a bad omen and start focusing only on that happening it will happen. You have to take your predictions good or bad and move your path in the way you want it to go." So basically if the omens come out grim, she hoped they wouldn't feel hopeless with what was going on here at Hogwarts, she needed them to stay positive and to trust in their professors.

"Now for the activity I would like you to take out a piece of parchment and your quill. You will pick up each rock that you put your initial on. Really hold it, move your hand with it a bit, and determine if it is heavy or light. Mark it on your paper and then move to the next rock." She showed her own rocks as example. "Once you have done this for each rock look at your parchment and see which did you have more of the light or heavier ones. If it was the heavier ones you have a bad omen and if it was more light you have a good omen." She showed her parchment and that three of her rocks were light and two were heavy.

[b] "Once you have that done I'd like you to write a few lines on your parchment of what you think your omen could be telling you and how you might either follow the path you are on or what you might change to help change your omen. I'll give you fifteen minutes to work on this.

*Awesome job everyone! We will move on in about 48 hours.

Delilah somehow managed to nod along to what the professor was saying. It made perfect sense now. So that was why they couldn't touch the rocks as they wrote their initials on them. She brought her chosen rocks closer to her. Now she wished she hadn't picked the super tiny rock. Oh, well. It was her's now, no matter what fate it brought along with it.

She gave the professor a raised eyebrow expression. An omen? Wasn't this school year bad enough without learning more about omens? She started to answer, but then the lesson had moved on again. It was just as well. She was only going to repeat what everybody else had said.

Anyway, she pulled out a quill and a piece of parchment. Oh...so the little tiny rock she'd chosen earlier was actually a sign of a good omen? Awesome! She picked up the first rock, held it up, and then jotted some notes on her parchment. She then picked up the other rocks one at a time and jotted down notes about them, too. When she was done, she reread her notes.

2. Light
3. Heavy
4. Heavy
5. Light

Great. It figures that she'd end up with more of the rocks that signaled something bad was on the way. Could it get any worse at this point, though?! Sigh. Now to put some thought into the second part of the activity...

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

Ash weighed the rocks. The red and grey phoeven rock and the smooth and sharp black stone were heavy, but the other ones were all light. Ultimately good. She spoke the words she was writing aloud, so that she could focus better. "I think that I will ultimately be fine when I'm like 20, but for now it'll be kinda rough. I get that." When she was 20, she could get out of Hogwarts, get married, get a job, have kids, do all the things she wanted to do in life without almost dying all the time. "Professor, can you change your future, or is it set? Because why would you want to know your future unless you could change it?"

Post Oh jeez I wrote a book..... I hope it's an entertaining one at least
The Gay Agenda™< >Homiesexual uwu

Quinn did as Professor Kitridge said, lifting each rock individually to see how they stacked up. Quinn wasn't sure how he felt about this type of reading, though—it was fairly subjective, wasn't it? One would think that there would be an exact weight where one could say this rock is heavy while this one is light, but if it's up to the diviner, well, then it could be swayed. Some of the rocks must be toeing the line between light and heavy, and those would ultimately be left to a judgement call and could be inaccurate, right? And it could be influenced by bias of how the diviner is feeling or the outcome they want. With these thoughts in mind, Quinn tried his best to be objective with his reading.

Quinn started with the ones he knew to be the easiest. First, he lifted the oblong rock with a hole, and he knew that this one would be considered heavy. Quinn marked down on his parchment:

Quote:
Rock 1: Heavy
Then, he lifted the brittle blueish gray rock. This one was definitely light.

Quote:
Rock 2: Light
Out of the remaining rocks, Quinn chose next the rounded rock with the purple stripe. He considered it in his hand, throwing it around slightly. He decided that this one was heavy.

Quote:
Rock 3: Heavy
Now he figured was the time for his pyramid rock. It reminded him of the Great Pyramids, somewhere he wanted to visit one day. But there weren't any plants in the desert. Except cacti. His face scrunched at the thought. Prickly.

Quote:
Rock 4: Light
It all came down to this. The swing vote. The rock rock. Cautiously, Quinn lifted the rock. This one took the longest for him to consider. It was as he'd feared. The gears in his head jammed. He raised and lowered the rock. He threw it a bit in the air and caught it. He threw it between his hands.

Quinn couldn't tell if this one was light or heavy.

Now was the time for internal turmoil. He was having a hard time objectively saying if this one was heavy or light. If he could know what this rock was made out of and the natural density of said material, it might make it a whole lot easier. But he didn't have that information. It was completely up to his judgement. Quinn thought, and thought again, and doubled back on his thoughts, and doubled back on the doubled back thoughts, and then rethought. He didn't want to be biased, but he couldn't very well point out his own bias, though he figured he would be biased towards light since it was the better option? So should he put heavy since he was probably biased towards light? But what if the rock was actually considered light? He couldn't very well get a second opinion with this being independent work. And he didn't want to ask the Professor—that would be embarrassing. So what was he to do?

Quote:
Rock 5: Neither
Well, that wouldn't do, would it? He couldn't very well have a tie, that was the point of having the odd number. And a neutral omen didn't sound like it existed. Then, Quinn had an idea for how to determine the weight.

He would drop the rock on his foot.

If it hurt, then the rock was probably heavy. If it didn't hurt, or at least not much, the rock was probably light. That sounded fair, right?

As inconspicuously as he could, Quinn held the rock under the table over his foot. He dropped the rock, and it thudded onto his foot, and then clattered onto the floor.

And Quinn could decisively say, this rock was heavy.

Quinn winced from the pain, but didn't make much noise. There would probably be a bruise later, but it was fine, he could deal with it. Quinn muttered small apologies for the noise as we went under the table to pick up his rock.

Quote:
Rock 5: Neither Heavy

The bad omen of these rocks could definitely have been for the fact that I would be hurt by dropping one on my foot, since I technically had my reading by the time I did so. If it wasn't for that, then I suspect it might be that I'm going to have trouble in Defense Against the Dark Arts again. I could improve my future by not dropping rocks on my foot or by studying harder for Defense Against the Dark Arts.
Quinn decided that Zygomancy wasn't his preferred form of divination.

Constant Vigilance! O_O AWAKE!

Mamie was not really sure about omens. She always thought people saw what they thought they'd see...so if they were already paranoid, they'd start seeing bad signs, and if they were having a good day, it'd be good omens, like the sun shining or something. Still, she got out her parchment, then grabbed the first very good rock she had claimed. It was...very light. Smoother than she'd expected, too. She set it off to the side, wondering if they'd be able to keep their rocks. She was starting to have quite the sentimental attachment to this particular one.

She marked an "L" on her parchment, for light.

On to the big grey rock. She lifted it, passing it between her two hands. It was bigger than the first one, so obviously weighed more. But she still thought that, given its size and general rock density, it should be heavier than it was. She marked another "L" on her page.

The third rock was that squarish one from the bottom. Despite being slightly smaller than the big grey one, she thought it felt heavier. Was it cheating if she held one rock in each hand to compare? Mamie glanced around, then picked the grey one back up with her left hand. Square rock in the right hand. The square one was definitely heavier.

"H" went on the page. Both Grey and Square rocks went off to the side with First rock.

She picked up the Goldilocks rock from the middle of the pile. This one felt...light? Mamie was beginning to think she just didn't know how much rocks were supposed to weight. Still, she marked the "L" on her parchment and put the rock off to the side.

She picked up the small, holey rock and (as expected) it was fairly light. One last "L" on the page. Mamie surveyed her results. She only had one H, which meant that the rocks were giving her a good omen. That...didn't seem right. She chewed the edge of her quill while she tried to think what the good omen could be about. She supposed it could mean that the Neo-people would go away. Or maybe it meant that the real headmaster Trent was okay, though she'd never met the real Trent and wasn't sure why she would have an omen about that. She decided she had an answer she was comfortable putting in writing.

Quote:
L L H L L

My good omen might be saying that I will see my family at the end of the term.
I don't want to change my path, so I will not worry about what the omen said and keep doing what I think is right.

Aboli didn't answer the question about omens. The other kids could have it. Her eyes watched the hooded figures just a little bit before lazily trailing back to Professor K when she heard the small snap noise. A glance to her left revealed it had come from Miss Valencia, and Aboli accidentally and awkwardly made eye contact with her former friend. She scoffed, just to really show off how much SHE NO LONGER CARED VALENCIA and turned back to her rocks, shaken.

Very shaken.

With impending doom everywhere, her thoughts drifted to talking to her. Amending things. If something happened to either of them, Aboli would always wonder about her...or she'd be the one dead, and Valencia would feel nothing. At least that was how Aboli saw it. She'd feel nothing, move on with her life, and Aboli would be forgotten.

Very quickly, she had changed her mind about talking to Val. Back to the rocks, which Aboli had stupidly picked BASED ON their weights all being similar. She did pick each one up, determined they were ALL light, and felt her stomach unfurl and settle a little due to her much Aboli DID read into omens. That was a good sign! She quickly scribbled as much on her parchment, wondering what other divining she could do on her own as forms of therapy for herself since...weekend therapy sessions were likely not to happen anymore. She had already made a schedule of sky gazing and meditation for herself because she knew she would need to cope with everything. She would also need to replicated therapeutic practices she normally got on her bi-monthly treks as well as the practical side to learning to control her gift.

It was a lot to do on her own, but the schedule. The schedule would help, and Aboli had little choice.

Violet nodded to herself--that was what Miss Howard had always said, that the future, unlike the past, was unfixed and that the present was the place where our actions could affect what might become. She liked that--she didn't like to think that her actions meant nothing.

Okay, the assignment--might as well try to do it, take her mind off...things. Violet slid each of her five rocks towards her, trying not to feel their weight, then picked up her quill and began.

First rock--the round, smooth white one--light.

Second rock--the medium-sized black and white speckled one with the shiny bits in it--[i]heavy[i].

Third rock--the small, sharp-edged grey one--light.

Fourth rock--the medium-sized dull brown-and-grey one, with the strange black smudge on one side, almost like it had been burned--pleasantly heavy. Violet liked that rock, it seemed made to fit in the palm of her hand. Even if it was weighing in on the bad omen side.

Fifth, and last, rock--the large, rough, reddish rock--Violet had expected it to be the heaviest of all, but it was surprisingly light.

Okay--three light and two heavy. So, that was leaning toward the good side, but not too much. But that last heavy rock made her feel really good, kind of confident and grounded. So maybe that was throwing a little more good in. (Or maybe, it occurred to her, it meant she would like the bad stuff...). Violet didn't want to think about that last part, so she put down her quill and stared at that last rock, trying to calm herself. 'I don't even believe in this stuff anyway,' she thought to herself.

Claudine observed how Kitridge turned her attention briefly to the trap door. She’s worried,’’ the girl realised. This did nothing to soothe her anxiety and she gripped the rock again. Merlin. These Hoods really were messing with everyone. She wrenched her thoughts to omens. It was good to know that omens could be changed. That meant if she ever came across a bad one, the Snakette would not spend her time obsessing over it.

Parchment and quill out, Claudine quickly wrote her name on it before getting down to the activity. She started off with the rock she had been gripping. The girl did as Kitridge instructed: really rolled it around in her hand to get a feel of it. Once this was done with all five, she looked down at her parchment:

Light
Heavy

“Bad omen,’’ she muttered, her heart leaping a bit. But what could it be? How the heck was she supposed to figure that out? Just make this a guessing game? See, this was another reason why Claudine did not trust Divination much. Unwillingly, her gaze trailed to The Hoods and the idea came to her.

The Hoods most likely will be out to get me if I stand against them. Since I have plans to for my future which I intend to achieve, I’ll try my best to stay out of their way, keep my head down and focus on doing the activities I like.

Delilah looked at her parchment a second time.

So it was definitely signaling a bad omen, and it was very obvious why that was. What exactly had been good about her time at this castle? Not much so far. She guessed those two light rocks reminded her of the few good moments that had happened in between all the bad ones. She had met a few new friends, and she was pretty happy about being sorted into Gryffindor.

So what about the bad omen then? Delilah dipped her quill in her ink and began writing.

I think the rocks are trying to remind me of the difficulties I've faced since coming to Hogwarts. I think they are trying to tell me that there's more difficulties to come, but now that I know this, I can maybe come up with a plan to avoid them.
