Default HoM Lesson 1 - Ancient Greek Mythology

Upon entering the History of Magic classroom on this crisp fall afternoon, you'll notice a couple of pictures on the board, probably hinting at the theme of today's lesson:

Quote:
Or...maybe not? Seems like an odd assortment of pictures...

Either way, the classroom is laid out the same as it always is, in neat little rows with room for Gabi to walk around as she's lecturing, like she always does. The blonde is sitting on her desk in the front of the room, but even though she's smiling, she seems...tired. She's been that way for the last few lessons, actually. Perhaps having your work place taken over by a hostile group intent on muggle destruction isn't great for one's sleep schedule.

"Good afternoon class, come in and take a seat," she says cheerfully as the class begins to file in.

OOC: Hello all! Welcome to your first HoM class of the term! Remember, IC there have been MANY HoM lessons that your character has already attended, so they are already familiar with Gabi and how she operates. Class will move on in roughly 30ish hours CLASS HAS STARTED, PLEASE DO NO POST YOUR CHARACTER ARRIVING LATE! As always please familiarize yourself with my History of Magic classroom rules AND the SS RPG rules if you haven't already. Thanks!

CLASS PROGRESSION:
Question One - Which ancient muggle societies do you think were influenced by witches and wizards?
Question Two - Why did Ancient Greeks create stories to cover up their true identities?

Gabi had been pacing the room, listening to the groups work while also keeping her eyes on the Inquisitorial Squad. Hopefully this lesson was holding up to their expectations - if it wasn't she was sure she was going to hear about it from Rosier.

"Alright class, it's time to move on! Let's see how you did,"
she said with a grin. "I accidentally spelled some of the names wrong, but you all figured out what I was going for - I will admit I was distracted," she explained, keeping her face straight and not looking at the hooded figures once.

"First off, Circe. Now, the original legend states that she is a demigod. Historically, however, she was just a simple witch - however, she was VERY good at transfiguration. One of the best in history, in fact. Her spell of choice was to turn intruders on her island into pigs, and eventually she gained such fame that she made it into the storyline of Homer's Odyssey," she explained. So not a demigod - just a regular witch, albeit a very talented one!

"Speaking of demigods - Proteus was regarded as a god-like figure as well. However, his story changed drastically throughout history, even stretching so far as to make him the son of Poseidon, the god of the sea,"
she told them. "In reality - Proteus was an animagus. In fact, he was one of the most skilled animagus of our time, able to turn in to multiple different animals and creatures. It's no wonder people thought he possessed some sort of god-like powers!" she told them all. That one had been a tough one...considering how much myth surrounded his existence. It was hard to tell truth from fiction!

"As for Cerberus, you all probably figured this one out. Cerberus may have been a mythological creature, but as we all know, three headed dogs do indeed exist in the magical world. Their existence was probably not well known amongst muggles, but the rumor of such a creature existing fit in nicely as the guardian of the underworld," she explained. "Was there an actual dog named Cerberus? Perhaps, but there is no doubt that the breed exists and is the basis of the legend," she continued.

"Finally, we have Medusa. As some of you may know from your studies of the dark arts, or creatures, that gorgons are dark creatures that have snakes for hair and can turn anyone to stone if they look them in the face," she explained. "So Medusa was certainly a gorgon - probably a specific gorgon, although her backstory has been exaggerated. She was not a mortal woman turned into a monster by a god - gorgons are just gorgons, she was born that way," she concluded. Greek mythology was truly fascinating! The way the stories shaped themselves over the centuries was so interesting to her, and thankfully she had a whole unit on mythology - in Greece and other places as well - planned out for the next month or so!

"Time for the main activity! For this one, you are going to use your creative writing skills and create a myth about yourselves!" she announced with a grin. Was anyone else as excited as she was for the activity?? "Imagine you're being studied by muggles in a couple hundred years. What is something you'd want to be remembered for? Use those skills to come up with a fun story surrounding yourself, and incorporate what we've learned about muggle myths to help you," she explained. She waved her wand so the criteria popped up on the blackboard behind them.

Quote:
-What are YOUR special skills that you would be remembered for?
-Where do you live? Ancient Greece? Egypt? Perhaps further along the timeline in Medieval England or elsewhere?
-The story should focus around you doing some sort of heroic act or making an impact on wizarding society
"Write out your story in 3-4 well thought out sentences. You have the rest of class to work on this," she told the class. They had about 20 minutes left, and then they could all leave and the hooded figures could go about their day and leave them all alone for a bit, yes?

OOC: Main activity time! As Gabi explained, we'll be coming up with our own stories about our characters! You only need to do this in one post, but you can spread it out because you'll have at LEAST 72 hours to work on this! In order to get full points, address the three parts of the prompt in 3-4 sentences and you'll be good to go! Nudge me if you have any questions!

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

So Ash was basically right in her guesses. Cool. But now they had to create a story about themselves? And it had to have a happy ending? If Ash's life was a greek story, it would probably be a little like persephone's. Girl gets kidnapped and can only spend a little bit of time in an actually okay place, while spending the rest in a place of darkness and awfulness. Parallels. But she decided to give the happy story a go.

Once, there was a small witch called Ash, who was seen as the Greek goddess of fire, and also somehow the goddess of sadness, and also the goddess of revenge. She saw a guy who liked to kill children, so she set him on fire, which was a very justifiable act considering he was a muggle. And then everyone lived happily ever after except for Ash, because she had nightmares about it. Everyone else in wizarding society was happy, because the muggle was dead.

Bit of a passive-aggressive myth there. Outwardly, it was a story about muggles being bad. But really, it was an easily-deniable parody of Lucien Rosier. Imagine him as a muggle. Hilarious. Also a slight insult to the wizarding world in that story.

"You think that's the same kind of creature?" she asked, trying to flip through her book to find something. The chapter on Greek mythology did have some information about the hellhound. Mamie tapped a drawing on her page. "It says in Greek mythology, Cerberus was a hellhound who guarded the entrance to the underworld." But Recard had said their textbook was just the myths, not the actual history, so...

"Did your three-headed Hogwarts dog guard something?" she asked. Maybe hellhounds were just magical guarddogs. "And what about this Proteus person? Do you think that's where the prefix proto- comes from?" She tried to remember what that prefix meant. It meant ancestor or something, if she remembered what her Papa had told her one time.

Delilah shrugged at Mamie's first question. "I don't know. It was just a thought," she remarked. Delilah had never exactly been one to know much about magic. She had to study very, very hard to get to where she was. This wild guessing based on prior knowledge wasn't exactly her thing. "It did guard something. There's this story about--..."

But the professor was moving on. Delilah gave Mamie another shrug then quickly got to work writing down some notes.

Delilah Ellerby

Circe: - witch; good at Transfiguration and Potions
Cerberus: - three-headed dog
Porteus: - very skilled animagus
Medusa: - a gorgon

Apparently, they'd been pretty spot-on with their thoughts about Circe, and they'd probably have gotten close to getting the others right had Recard not moved on. Now they were writing a myth about themselves, but the good thing was that it only had to be three or four sentences long. Thank you, Recard! Thank you!

He smiled as he finished. "Are you alright with these answers?" He made just as good of a team as he thought they would.
Lia quickly jotted down their agreed upon answers onto her parchment. "I think it makes sense. It could go either way honestly... or we might be completely off." They were trying though and working well together so it didn't matter to much to her if they weren't correct with all of their thoughts.

Quote:
Circe: Witch/Sorceress, highly skilled in the areas of Herbology, Potions and Transfiguration, specially human to animal.
Cerebus: Cerberus or Three-Headed dog
Porteus: Kelpie? Seer skilled in Transfiguration Animagus
Medusa: Gorgon
Looking over what they had come up, she nodded to herself. The answers looked okay to her. It was a good thing too since they seemed to be moving on with the lesson now.

There out of four. Not bad at all. Dahlia made the necessary corrections on her parchment, a look of puzzlement still on her face when it came to Porteus. He was an animagus. An extremely talented one. How though? Hady was an animagus and Frankie too. She knew very well how difficult it was to become on and that you DID'NT get to choose. So... how? Unable to focus on anything else until she knew, she raised her hand. "Professor, I don't understand. Isn't the form of your animagus based on your inner self, like a spirit animal or guide of sorts? How can you become more than one?" It was something she had never heard of or read anywhere before. And she did a LOT of reading on the subject.

As for that writing assignment, well she would get to that in a minute.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Heath was awfully tense and Claudine knew why. But hey, this trio was working on their project and not doing anything wrong so The Hoods could shove off. As for his question… “A dementor,’’ she replied without hesitation. Dementors were scary, almost as much as a three headed dog but there was doubt about her answer. The girl shrugged. “It was the first thing I thought about.” On her parchment, Claudine wrote: Cerberus - a regular three headed dog or perhaps, a Dementor.

Afterwards, she kind of sat there blankly, eyeing Heath and Fiona. “I don’t know…” It was an honest reply. Reccard was right about them using their thinking for this activity. “I’m confused now.’’ Not that it mattered. Reccard was clearing things up. Needless to say she took careful notes.

Oh joy.

Create a myth about themselves?

This was going to be interesting.

Good thing that Atlas was a little smartypants, because it made it easier to figure things out. His contributions were pretty darn smart. Did he know that he was pretty darn smart? Probably so, since he was a Ravenclaw.

Phoebe turned her attention back to the Professor, and she pulled a little face at the assignment. She was already the star of her myth, but putting it on paper was SO embarrassing. She twirled the quill between fingers and wondered if she could pay Atlas to write a story about her.

Truth be told, Atlas was kind of hoping the basilisk version of that Phoebe suggested was the truth. That would have been more interesting than just another witch. His brow twitched at the mention of Porteus and his inconceivable skillset. He was gawking a bit before it was time to move on...and the GRYFFINDOR was not keen on writing about himself, truth be told.

So, she didn't even have to ask. "So...besides astronomical beauty...what do you hope to be remembered for?" Was his face a bit red? Ears even more so? Lacking direct eye contact? All of the above. Yes.

Cerebus Cerberus

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Claudine got to work. Well, not right away as she was still trying to figure out what her special skills would be. The possibilities were endless, after all. There was one thing known for certain: the myth had to involve creatures. “Here goes nothing,” came her thoughts. The Snakette put her quill to her parchment and began to work.

SPOILER!!: Myth
It was tens of thousands of years before, back in ancient Egypt, when the Nile flowed even richer than it does now. A small wizarding civilization thrived about a mile from the River but over a few months, a water demon {yes, it resided in the Nile} in the form of a white dragon with blue eyes would attack. It always took someone away, dragging them away on their backs and into the Nile. Not many were brave enough to attempt to put an end to the issue, and those that were, never lived. Being extremely gifted with creatures, I was able to somewhat calm the creature and quickly used a strong Placement Charm to have a bridle over its head. From that day forward, I was remembered for my bravery, gift of handling dangerous creatures, cunning and quick thinking.

Well, that wasn’t too bad. The myth was a bit lengthy but surely Reccard wouldn’t mind? And since her story took place in Ancient Egypt, it made sense to write in past tense.

Default had to condense this or else she would have gone on and on...and on....
A Poop * k8 *

Aboli stopped chatting with Valencia as Recard moved on. They got to flex their creative muscles a little bit with the upcoming assignment. A myth about herself...she absolutely knew what her gift would be. She already had one. Her fingers involuntarily flexed in her gloves.

She tapped her quill, scribbling down some bullet-point ideas before she began the endeavor of writing out a whole plot.

Quote:
The condensed version:

A long time ago, before the continents had broken apart, there was a dark witch named Aboli. The world was in chaos, and beings were fighting other beings. Gods and goddesses were fighting each other with their chaos affecting the mortals on Earth. Even the animals could sense the Great Chaos, as it became known, and were being as vicious as ever. The magical brethren, the witches of the realm, usually lived in groups on the outskirts of humanity. They kept to themselves so that the mortals without magic could deal with their problems with violence; the witches did not need to resort to violence due to magic.

A dark witch felt the Great Chaos begin to take hold in the covens. Darkness and lightness were only attributes of which the magical folks drew their powers from. Aboli grew fearful of the chaos she could sense in the realm, for she had been born with a special ability. She could feel others' emotions with a touch of her hand. And so, she set out to the realm of the gods. With the help the Seeing Eye, a necklace given to her by her mother, Aboli went into a deep sleep to find the godly realm. If she were awoken before she was able to help the gods, the Great Chaos would continue, and all lifeforms would kill each other off. She found where the gods were fighting, and before any of them could force her to leave, Aboli took the hand of one, and the hand of another, and began to spew out what they were all feeling.

It turned out there was a huge miscommunication, and soon Aboli got them to talk it out amongst each other. Their fighting stopped, and peace was restored. The Great Chaos had carried on enough to break the land-mass on Earth into their respective continents we know today, but it was not enough to wipe out all lifeforms.
There. Cool. She had written waaaay more than she had originally thought....maybe I should be a writer. Ha, she thought. Even in the myth she had written about herself she dreamed of helping people solve their problems.

How can you become more than one?" It was something she had never heard of or read anywhere before. And she did a LOT of reading on the subject.

As for that writing assignment, well she would get to that in a minute.
Gabi had been pacing the classroom, monitoring them all and watching them work when Dahlia asked a question about Proteus - a very good question, in fact! One that Gabi felt the whole class would benefit from hearing, so she spoke up a bit louder as she answered.

"Good question! You bring up an excellent point that animagus are supposed to be a reflection of ourselves - it's why you cannot CHOOSE your animagus. To answer your question - no, you cannot become more than one animal. To become even ONE animagus is truly a miracle in itself. So how was Proteus actually able to have SEVERAL animagus forms? The much more likely story is that he was very skilled in Transfiguration - like Circe - and could change into many animals that way, and the claims of his animagus skills were exaggerated. By himself or others around him, we may never know. This was over 2500 years ago, remember. Perhaps he WAS an animagus in one form - likely a sea creature, given his love for the sea - who also used magic to transform himself when another creature suited him better," she explained.

"This is all covered in the chapter I'll be having you read next week when we dive into Proteus a bit further," she added as an aside, since historians had obviously addressed this before and would be part of their discussion in later lessons. They would be researching all these myths a bit more in depth as the unit went on for the next month - in case anyone was curious on learning more, their time would come! "So the answer to that is - no, he likely was NOT able to truly transform himself into multiple animagus forms, but there is no doubt he was definitely able to manifest himself as MANY different animals. We teach what the historical records tell us - but then, we use our critical thinking to step back and determine what TRULY happened. Does it make sense that he would be able to have this amazing power no one on record has EVER been able to do since then? Or is the far more likely scenario that he was able to perform highly advanced transfiguration, and his story took on a life of its own?" she concluded with a smile. That was all very advanced critical thinking for such a young student...maybe she'd be a history major herself one day?? Gabi could only HOPE!

"I know that seems a bit confusing - and you're probably thinking that history isn't supposed to be the confusing subject! But I want you ALL to realize that history is not always just memorizing dates and facts - and things are not always as they seem,"
she added. That was like...the entire POINT of this lesson, Dahlia had just taken it a step further!

"Great work everyone, keep at it!" she called out. They had a few more minutes to go, so they had a bit of time to finish up their activities before class was ended.

OOC: Keep up the great work, guys! I'm reading your posts as they come in and you're all doing great! You have at LEAST 36 hours left to continue before I wrap things up!

So--Violet had been mostly correct in her answers, except for Medusa. She hadn't really thought there was such a thing as a gorgon, but apparently there was.

Next--the assignment. A myth about her self! Violet was so happy to be writing again, because she very much missed her private journals, but she didn't dare keep them this year, for fear they might be confiscated and reveal something incriminating about herself. But now she could write as much as she wanted! Well, maybe not that much--Violet could go on and on writing a myth, but she decided she'd better just concentrate on what the teacher had asked for.

Text Cut: The Assignment

What are YOUR special skills that you would be remembered for?
-Where do you live? Ancient Greece? Egypt? Perhaps further along the timeline in Medieval England or elsewhere?
-The story should focus around you doing some sort of heroic act or making an impact on wizarding society

Violet sat for a few moments twirling her quill, and then got down to writing in earnest.

Text Cut: The Myth of Blackthorne

Blackthorne was a powerful potioneer and alchemist who lived in the fjord country of Norway. Whether Blackthorne was a witch or wizard is unclear, as sources differ on this point.

Besides potions and alchemy, Blackthorne was skilled in runology, and combined runic galdor and sigils with potions to create powerful magic. Among many other achievements, Blackthorne is credited with developing a universal panacea, a powerful healing potion said to cure any disease. Once when the countryside was threatned by a dangerous ridgeback dragon, Blackthorne is also said to have created a sleeping potion that was able to subdue the beast entirely.

What Blackthorne looked like is entirely unknown, as there are no visual depictions available. This fact only adds to the mystique of this individual.

There, that was pretty good, and Violet thought she had covered all the aspects of the assignment, though she kind of wished she had time to make it longer.

Heath blinked, slightly taken aback by Claudine’s answer. No way in Hoth would he ever have come up with the idea of Cerberus being a dementor on his own! It did make some sense in a way. Dementors once guarded Azkaban, and maybe the Underworld that Cerberus guarded was meant to represent the negative feelings the dementor caused. He was so lost in that thought that he almost didn’t hear the next thing she said. Oops, he didn’t mean to confuse her! He had only enough time to give her an apologetic look before Professor Recard went over the answers. He listened intently, filling in the correct answers. Wow, he did better than he thought he would! He had Circe and Medusa right, and he was on the right track with his guesses for Cerberus and Proteus too.

The instructions on the board got a confused blink from him. They had to write a myth about themselves? This was going to be hard! He wasn’t much of a writer, and he didn’t feel very heroic or helpful to society. It seemed the only thing he felt anymore was conflicted. All his life he felt torn between two worlds, but since Rosier took over, the pull was worse than ever. Maybe that was something he could work into his myth… some sort of hybrid creature forced to choose one side of himself over the other. Yeah, that could work, and for his skills… The only skills he had that he felt were worth remembering were his skills in the performing arts. Now there was just the question of what kind of hybrid his mythical alter ego should be.

Heath fidgeted with his quill as he thought. If he recalled correctly, the sirens of Greek mythology were half bird, half woman creatures capable of luring sailors to their death with a song. He decided his hybrid creature would have a siren’s wings and song to symbolize his looks and passion for the arts, the qualities that came from his muggle father. But what about the parts of himself that came from his mother (namely his magical ability)? What could represent that? It had to be something more dominant and well-regarded than a siren. He briefly considered having the other half of his hybrid be human but decided against it. WIth the ending he had in mind for his myth, that could be seen as a pro-muggle message. He couldn’t risk it!

After flipping through his textbook for inspiration, he decided that the hybrid creature’s other parent would be a water god… powerful and worthy of respect, like the magical side of himself. Plus it seemed plausible that a water god would mate with a siren. He picked up his quil and let his ideas spill onto the parchment:

SPOILER!!: The Siren’s Son
Long ago in Ancient Greece, a siren and a water god fell in love and bore a son, but the gods cursed their union, inciting a war between themselves and the sirens. Their son, who had the wings and song of a siren but all the powers of a water god, was misunderstood and despised by both worlds. Banished to a small rock pool, he spent his lonely existence pouring his heart into his mournful siren song, hoping that someone would answer the call.

One day, a water goddess was drawn to the Siren’s Son’s song, but the war threatened his newfound happiness. As he was only half water god, he was shunned by her kind, and he grew to hate his siren side. In his anger and heartbreak, he resolved to end the war that had caused himself and others so much suffering for so long and unleashed the full extent of his powers. His siren song drew all who heard it, god and siren alike, to his rock pool. When he had them all right where he wanted them, he conjured a powerful sea storm with waves that crashed, tossing both sides asunder until they had no choice but to agree to a truce.

As a reward for making them see the error of their ways, the Siren’s Son was unbanished and offered a choice, live in the world of the gods or that of the sirens. It wasn’t a hard choice; he chose to live in the same world as the only one who saw good in him when he was still an outcast. So the Siren’s Son gave up his song and became a water god.

Heath looked over his work. It was a lot longer than Professor Recard asked for, but overall he was satisfied with what he’d written. Not too bad for someone who didn’t consider himself a writer!

curly haired prefect - "sometimes I get angry!" - 30/90 - *chicken emoji* - probably @ Disney - I speak dog

The class had gotten quiet, which was a good thing in Gabi's opinion - it meant they were working hard, yes? She smiled at the class as she walked to the front, completely ignoring those dastardly hooded figures at this point.

"Alright everyone, time is up and class is dismissed! Please turn in your myths to me for grading up here on my desk. For homework, please read the chapter in your history textbooks on Mopsus and Calchas - two well known Seers in the Ancient Greek era. Come prepared to discuss next class!" she called out as the door opened and students were officially dismissed for the day.

The Squad could leave with the rest of them. Um. Right now.

OOC: Thanks for attending my lesson everyone! I hope you liked it, I was on a real Ancient Greece kick last month and was super excited for this one! I'll be leaving the thread open for about 10 more hours to allow you guys to wrap up your main activities before I close it FOR GOOD. Thanks again everyone!!!

A myth about herself, huh? That sounded kinda fun. But also a bit difficult, trying to figure out what she would want to be remembered for. That was a pretty big question, yeah? Something to think about in real life too, not just in a myth setting.

Ivy mentally shook herself, trying not to overthink the assignment too hard. This was all just in the context of myths and legends, and it didn't have to be that deep. This wasn't supposed to be a long, insightful essay on what she wanted to do with her life.

So, in an effort to refocus herself on the actual task at hand, she jotted down a few notes as she brainstormed, hoping to get the creative juices flowing. Photography was obviously something she loved, but how to incorporate that into an old myth type of setting? Ancient Greece seemed like the best place, since that was their topic in this lesson, but obviously they didn't have cameras just lying around everywhere. Hmm...

Finally, after tossing the ideas around and around in her head for some time, she set out to write the actual story.

Text Cut: The Myth of Ivy
Long ago, in ancient times, the gods and goddesses of the Greek islands freely walked the earth among the mortals, and there was peace. But the peace did not last, for a certain god, who had isolated himself from the others, became bored and dissatisfied with the way things were. He became a trickster, sowing discord among the gods and goddesses until they were divided and fought against each other.

He was cunning and clever and never showed his true face to anyone. He caused division by disguising himself at various times as the other gods and goddesses, pretending to be someone else as he whispered lies and gossip, misleading the others so they never knew the god or goddess they were speaking to was not really who they thought it was.

But one goddess, sensing that something was amiss, hatched a plan. She had noticed that in the midst of each conflict, there was one person who left in the shadows, slinking away to a particular hiding place to rest.

So, the next day, after that person had once again left disguised, the goddess found a place to hide herself among the vines of ivy that the area was overgrown with. Silent and still, she remained there until the god returned. And once he was inside, thinking himself safe, he took off his disguise, revealing his true face.

By the time he left the following day, the hidden goddess had memorized his face. She left her hiding place and created a picture of his face from her memory.

This she showed to the other gods and goddesses, and with his true face now known, the trickster god was unmasked, unable to disguise himself any longer. The gods and goddesses realized he was the source of their conflicts. He showed no remorse for his deception, so as punishment, he was banished to Tartarus.

Peace, finally, had returned, and the other gods and goddesses were grateful to the clever goddess who had helped them find peace with each other again. She came to be called Ivy, the goddess of truth and harmony.

There. That turned out okay, she thought, and it was actually a lot of fun to write. Even if, upon reading over it, she wasn't sure some of it made sense. But hopefully it was good enough because time was up.

Ivy quickly noted down the homework assignment before gathering her things into her schoolbag. She slid the bag over her shoulder then walked up to hand in her parchment with her mythological story on it.

"Thanks for the lesson, Professor," she said, a small smile on her face, then she headed out.
