Default CoMC Lesson 1: The Cockatrice

Care of Magical Creatures Lesson 1: The Cockatrice

As you make your way down to the usual area where your Creatures class is held, you'll start to notice a large row of hedges running around the usual classroom space. In fact, the hedges are so high that you can't see where the classroom area used to be fenced in. Where does it start? Where does it end? Heck, you can't even see the edge of the Forbidden Forest behind these hedgerows, which have to be at least eight, nine, maybe ten feet tall.

You can see Professor (and Groundskeeper) Williamson, however, who is standing in front of the entrance to the hedge maze. Yes, it's a maze, and yes, there's a creature inside. "Come on, don't dwadle now," he says and beckons you to join him beside the entrance to the maze. There are a few wooden shipping crates beside him and every so often, the hedges give a bushy little shake like something inside the maze is eager to get out.

But don't worry. You trust Williamson to make sure nothing happens to you, right?

Class Progression:
  • Q1. What do you already know about hybrid creatures? What makes a magical creature 'hybrid'? How/why could these creatures be considered more dangerous than a regular creature?
  • Q2. Today you'll be facing a creature that does have a history with the Triwizard Tournament. What can you tell me about the cockatrice, and how do you survive one?
  • Mini-Activity. Suit up to go into the maze. There's padding and helmets, sunglasses, broken mirrors, and weasels on leashes for you to use. Good luck.
  • Main Activity. Into the maze! Don't RP for the jarveys or cockatrice(s). Just try to get to the end of the maze!

Just so you know, it's not too late to jump in! This lesson will close at/around 11:59 PM EST on 13 January 2021!

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

After suiting up and holding the broken piece of mirror in his hand, Minjae turned his attention to the Professor as he began to explain what they needed to do while his weasel stood next to him. It was a cute little thing if he had to say so himself. The animal didn’t have a name yet though but perhaps later he could think of one. The task sounded easy. Get through the maze while avoiding the two creatures. But this was hogwarts , nothing was easy , especially these days.

Deciding that he wasn’t going to partner up today, the Hufflepuff entered the maze a little later than the rest because as he had walked to the entrance , Minjae had noticed that the Hoods were threatening the Professor at this point. He drew his wand but then remembered his place and that he’d only cause more trouble so he chose to ignore it. Pretend that he had not seen a thing. And he felt terrible about it as he entered the maze with his weasel.

”Alright, where do we go?” he asked the animal and he watched as it began to sniff the ground to the right. ”Right it is, i guess” he said as followed the weasel, eyes on the ground and holding his mirror a bit slanted so that he could see up ahead. .

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

Broken was RIGHT. The weasel didn't wanna walk and--oh wait. "We don't really wanna go in either. Maybe he's just as smart as we are." Emmerson decided. "Maybe we should follow his lead."

Or not. Phoebe was joining them now and Emm was somewhere between RELIEVED her friend was well enough to continue with class and ready to yell at her for nearly DYING AND LEAVING HER AND KIZZY UNATTENDED for the rest of the term. Did they look like they could take care of themselves?? "You can have the weasel, he's smart enough to know this maze is a bad idea...but I guess I will have to do all the work, huh?"

Between the two James girls, Emm was now the voice of reason. Emmerson Nicole Justine Cambridge was now the only one trying to stay alive in this group--CECE.

Oh sweet Circe, thank MERLIN.

It took much restraint not to rush at Cece and beg her never to leave them. Now this felt a little more balanced. Now it was two on each side. NOW she could go inside feeling a little safer.

And look, poop. "I say we move away from the poor. Both weasels are broken. We're doomed and gonna die. Let's not die this way." She said, pointing to the clean path.

Heath listened intently as Williamson went on, growing more intrigued by the minute. Oh, the cockatrice? Not where he initially thought this lesson was going, but still interesting. He thought back to what he’d read about the creature, trying to come up with a plan to survive one. He’d seen conflicting information regarding the cockatrice’s stare, whether it kills its victims or simply turns them to stone. Either way, he would not want to look one in the eye, so he’d need something to deflect its gaze, like a mirror or sunglasses. Either that or use a spell to take out its eyes so it couldn’t look at him. Most likely the former if he ever actually faced a cockatrice. Creatures behaved aggressively out of instinct, not malice, and unlike some in this school, it wasn’t in him to hurt an innocent. Speaking of which…

All thoughts of cockatrices or a strategy vanished from Heath’s mind the moment he saw those hooded goons attack Phoebe. No, they disfigured her for tapping and smiling at them! Then there was Coby screaming and the two little Gryffindors (Kizzy & Emmerson)... tackling each other? The scene was too chaotic for him to process all that was happening, but it had him trembling with fear and rage. Thank Merlin for Professor Williamson and Professor Recard!

He took several deep breaths to calm himself and refocus his attention on the task at hand. So they were essentially building their own armor, right? Despite his worry, he couldn’t help but feel a little excited at that idea. A design was already forming in his mind as his dark eyes scrutinized the crates’ offerings. He took some padding and attached mirror shards to the chest with a quick sticking charm. He should probably add mirrors to the arm guards too; that way he could hold up his arm to shield his eyes if he had to. Once he had mirrors attached to the arms, he put on the padding and turned his attention to the helmet. He wished there was something he could attach to it to make a sort of visor. Maybe if he tried sticking a bunch of mirrors to each other, he could fashion a visor that way. He tried it and eventually came up with a crude mirror visor to attach to his helmet.

Now he had to find a weasel. He nearly smiled at the words Claudine whispered to him but stopped himself just in time, remembering what had happened to Phoebe. Instead he replied with a barely perceptible nod before peering into the crate. His eyes were instantly drawn to a small female weasel cowering at the back. “Hey, girl,” he whispered. He held a hand out to her, giving her a moment to two to acclimate to his presence before petting her. “It’s okay…” He nearly said, They scare me too, but worried that it would draw the hooded figures’ wrath. Instead, he said, “You’re safe with me.”

As Heath gently lifted the weasel out of the crate, he noticed she’d stopped trembling under his touch. That must be a good sign, right? Now he needed a name for her! At first he thought about giving her a Star Wars name, but overhearing Claudine call her weasel Charlie gave him another idea. “I’m going to name you Lucie, okay?” he said, and Lucie nudged his hand. He’d take that as a yes!

Still holding Lucie, he listened to Professor Williamson’s next instructions. He wasn’t the slightest bit surprised to learn there were cockatrices in the maze - why else would they have gone through all this trouble? What did surprise him was that there were baby cockatrices, and jarveys too! Maybe he’d see Mollywobbles in the maze… No matter what creature he found in there, he was sure it couldn’t possibly be as dangerous as those hooded guys!

He set Lucie on the ground in front of him, holding firmly to her leash. After donning a pair of sunglasses, he was ready to go into the maze. “Ready to go?” he asked Lucie. She darted forward, and he followed along, keeping his grip tight on her leash. Soon he and Lucie caught up to Claudine and Charlie. “Mind if we tag along?” he asked.

Claudine had only taken a few steps into the maze with a couple of others close by when Heath caught up. Looking over at him again, she couldn’t help but giggle. “You look funny in all that getup’’ she teased then bobbed her head. “Sure. You and your little friend can join us.” Ando so she continued in, knowing that Heath and Lucie were at their sides. “Charlie seems to be eager,’’ the Slytherin remarked as the weasel gave a great sniff and shot off. This in turn tugged on the leash and forced Claudine to hurry on. “Come on, slowpokes.’’ Moving as quickly as she could with the small amount of extra weight of the additional outfit she wore, she hurried after Charlie.

The fifth year could not keep up with the direction changes! They went right then right again and left. “Remember to have your mirror at the ready,’’ she warned Heath, looking over her shoulder to ensure that he was with her.

"You mean...between myself and Aries?" he asked. "Asking how my pet tarantula may work. Aries didn't come to school with a familiar like I did." In fact, Aries kept teasing him about stepping on Araneus.

He liked holding it, which was why he was relieved when she suggested he could keep it. Otherwise he would have felt inclined to return it to the crate and then he wasn't quite sure what he would do with all of his nervous energy. "...you told me my job was handling the weasel," he carefully reminded her, eyes a bit panicked as he quickly when through the incredibly short list of spells he knew anything about. "I...can maybe Scourgify and Tergeo ... " Two spells he had seen performed most often at home. Along with a Hot Air Charm dad did to press his suits, but Atlas hadn't given that one much practice. Tergeo he had a very urgent need to perfect. "...or Bombarda...but Professor Williamson probably wouldn't like that. Nor any cockatrice." Unless he was blasting holes in the hedges for them to escape through. Which...didn't seem like the worst idea if things came to it.

Adjusting his hold on the ferret, who he really should name something, the first year followed clooooooooooose beside the seventh year. "I...um...pardon me but...I don't actually know your name..." he finally admitted as they turned the corner, LEFT, and came upon the scene of two jarveys. "Ohsweetsolsticetheyaresocute!" And Atlas was positively blushing as the one came up to sniff his robes, which meant his attention was solely on this jarvey and not the other that had already vanished from sight.

The girls who entered were the first group to come across a cockatrice, or more specifically, eveidence of a cockatrice.

There were some... rather liquid droppings all over the path in front of them, the droppings seeming to lead around a corner and to the right.

It was up to the group if they should follow them. One of their weasels was undisturbed by them, but its whiskers did twitch in the same direction as the droppings. The other weasel manned by Cecelia went ahead to sniff them out directly.

Hmmmmm.

This was the way, the weasel decided. They had to follow the droppings.

SPOILER!!: Quinn & Mamie, sittin' in a tree

The way WAS clear, but only because the cockatrice hadn't come into view yet.

Slowly, it did, the thing a clearly odd mix between a rooster and a dragon, with orangeish feathers on its back and thick green scales on its underside. It was closer to the size of a rooster at this point, and it behaved like one too, flapping its wings and making a soft clucking sound as it pecked at the ground for something to eat. Slowly, the cockatrice seemed to become aware of the scent of something in the air... weasel? Was that weasel?!

The cockatrice let out a loud squawk, a bit of smoke coming out of its mouth as it flapped it wings and suddenly charged toward the pair with the weasel, wings flapping, legs RUNNING toward them.

SPOILER!!: Claudine & Heath

All was quiet on the maze front for this pair, no sign of anything in their pathways... yet.

Perhaps if they continued in, the weasel now known as Charlie might show them The Way?

SPOILER!!: Delilah & Avalon

There was nothing jumping out at them yet, just a faint burrowing noise from ahead; the sound coming from perhaps a JARVEY! in the way?

There was certainly something ferret-like digging a little hole under one of the hedges. Just its hindquarters were visible to the girls as they checked around the corner.

OF COURSE Ferret Bueller would be in the maze! Did Morgan spot the hyperactive ferret yet, or did he go the wrong way once he was inside? He might be on the same path as an odd Gryffindor-Slytherin duo just ahead of him...

SPOILER!!: Granger!DANGER!Astrocats!

To the left was where the Hufflepuff Mamie and Ravenclaw Quinn were just ahead, currently being rundown by a cockatrice.

Could Ashley and Tadhg help out just in time?

There was nothing to fear for this Gryffindor; all was well and calm... for now.

SPOILER!!: Aboli & Atlas

There was a loud SQUEAK! up ahead from Mollywobbles, and if either of these two had sharp eyes, they might just notice some chicken-like droppings leading the way she'd run.

Hmmmmmmmmm. Wonder what the jarvey got into.

SPOILER!!: Curtis & Violet & Co.

Regardless of group, all of these students would enter the maze around the same time and see the same thing:

Nothing, yet.

They needed to turn a corner or decide which direction to go first.

SPOILER!!: Bazinga! and Watson!

The branches on the hedge maze seemed to sway gently in an unseen breeze, beckoning these two to hurry on through.

There were, indeed, jarveys ahead of them. Would they follow Mollywobbles too, or forget their own path without her?

Ferret Bueller was still preoccupied with entertaining one Atlas Flamsteed ahead of them.

Professor Williamson, in the meanwhile, had climbed up a wooden stand he'd built at the end of the maze. He wanted to keep a close eye on his kids and the jarveys, and... those stupid hooded figures, who he could hardly see in the shadows cast by the tall hedges.

So there was a lot happening. Aboli was attempting to go veeeery slow and use her mirror as much as possible so that she wouldn't suffer from whatever a baby cockatrice could do. All while holding her wand aloft and glancing over at Atlas every so often. His weasel was cute. Useless, but cute.

She would have to remember to ask the twins about the tarantula, then, before she spoke. If the one who answered was all I DON'T HAVE ONE OF THOSE, then she'd know it wasn't Atlas. Right. It sounded exhausting having twins. Poor Flamsteed parents.

"So you have more than one job, then," she said with a slight eyebrow raise. "It's called multitasking, Flamsteed," Aboli kept her voice soft, though, since they were now IN the maze, and she needed to not draw attention to them. The other students had all entered as well, but she was trying to solely focus on her and Atlas. Who cared what the others did as long as they didn't die or force Aboli or Atlas to DIE. But as she had expected, he didn't know much yet, and that was okay, but...yeah. She still thought it was better to have two wands out rather than just one.

The two jarveys were muttering about randomly, and Aboli sighed. "Aboli. Aboli Song. I was a prefect before...all the new rules and whatnot," just so he knew he was dealing with someone who was a rule follower for the most part. They had gone left...and the one jarvey was sniffing at Atlas' robes while the other one scurried away all fast. "Looks like that one - " and there came a NOISE - "Might have followed...whatever made this," she nudged the droppings with the tip of her shoe. "Ready to face whatever it is ahead, Atlas?" she asked as she looked over at him with a firmness to her tone. Luckily, she could still see and hear many of her classmates, but still.

At the behest of Mamie, Ash and Tadhg, Quinn stopped running—but he was not getting any closer to that thing than he had to. He couldn't even think of any spells he knew well enough to use and help them out. And there was not a chance that Quinn was going anywhere in this maze alone, so he stayed a couple feet behind the others, hoping they would be able to deal with it.

His weasel, however, had different plans. It leapt off his shoulder with a triumphant squeak. "Hey, where are you going?!" Quinn reached out to grab the leash, but it got away from him before he could. The weasel raced towards the cockatrice at full speed—it was supposed to be able to kill these things, right? Might as well try it!

Like a minotaur, but...two different kinds of dinosaur instead of whatever two things a minotaur was. "Quinn, wait! Come back!" she yelled after Quinn. She didn't want to face this thing alone. Though...she suddenly shared Quinn's earlier fears about the usefulness of their protective padding. And how much help would a first year really be? They still had to go through the maze, so she had to figure out how they could get around it without it attacking them. Hadn't she learned any useful spells last year? "Flipendo!" she brandished her wand at the cockatrice as it got closer, still trying not to look directly at it.

As Dash was tugging him to go right Tadhg looked around corners with his mirror. "Quinn... right! Go right!" Was it too late for that? Probably so when the cockatrice was heading towards them. WEASEL!!!!!! The cockatrice continued squawking and running straight at the kids... and then it got hit by the Hufflepuff's flipendo, and the Slytherin's much weaker attempt.

The cockatrice was knocked straight back into the bushes, disappearing entirely from sight.

Just in time, too. The little Ravenclaw's weasel was FEROCIOUS.

The coast was now clear; which way would these kids take?

The weasel would probably be better at seeking out its prey foe than outright navigating the maze, which was maybe what Weasley had meant regarding using them as guides. So, whatever, Nem would just follow where the creature went, as opposed to the simple 'stick to the left hedge' method they might have otherwise employed. Completing the maze first - or even at all - was not a priority, they were just interested in seeing a cockatrice.

Baby cockatrice. Ugh. Fine.

When it was time to enter, Nem hung back, for a little more of that sweet, sweet distance from the rest of the class. In the meantime, they stood in quiet thought, while the weasel strained against its lead. Weaselby had also mentioned using the mirrors to look at the cockatrices, but it might work to just hold the mirror facing forwards and slightly down as they walked, and then towards any sound. If they encountered one of the babies, and it looked instinctively towards them, it would likely see the mirror, and possibly knock itself out, if the angle was right. Nem could do the same for going around corners: hold it out and angle it towards the ground, maybe move it around a little and see if the cockatrice saw its reflection, rather than theirs. Then, if it passed out, might be they'd get a good look at it before moving on. If it didn't, the weasel seemed like it could take on several adult cockatrices if they threatened it, and Nem was plenty skilled with magic, so they weren't concerned.

It was probably too much to hope for a chance to silence and swipe a jarvey, right? What with Rent-a-Snitch lurking around every corner and all. Whatever.

Anyway.

After a minute or so had passed, Nem deemed it time. "Oi," they said to the weasel, giving the lead a tug in the direction of the entrance. "In here." The creature started scurrying in that direction, and Nem stalked along behind it.

The weasel was likely heading for the pile of... was that liquid feces belonging to a cockatrice or a very sick jarvey? Either way, it was hard to miss, smack dab in the middle of the Slytherin's path, as it were.

SPOILER!!: Dahlia & Kale

Right?

Casting a quick glance over her shoulder at Gorgeous Hair Boy Kale, she flashed him a small grin. "If you don't mind working with a first year, Rusty and I," she had finally come up with a name for the weasel in her arms, "we'll be heading inside now. It's okay if you want to." Lia wouldn't be upset by that. Maybe. Either way it was time to move.

So with a very frightened Rusty tucked tightly in her arm, held against her chest, Dahlia entered the maze. Right away she pulled the broken shard of mirror from her pocket to hold in her hand, her other hand now occupied by her wand. Whatever was going to happen, she had to be as ready as possible.

"Okay Rusty, I won't put you down... put you have to help me. Move in my arms or a squeak or something to tell me which way to go." It would be really helpful if she could put him down but something was telling her he was still to scared for that. Slow footsteps were taken until she came to the first crossing. Left or right. Which way did she go?

"Now is when I need your assistance.." she whispered quietly, trying to aim the broken mirror first around the right corner but only showed her other students up head. Did that mean it was safe? "There's others this way... maybe we sh-" Rusty leaped from her arms onto the ground, swiftly pulling her in the direction of the left path. "Hey! Easy, you'll hurt yourself!" Lia yelped in surprise, stumbling forward a little at the sudden tugging on her wrist, which the lead that held Rusty was wrapped around.

"Okay, okay, left it is.." she nearly laughed at the insistent tugging. "You're the leader. Go ahead." To the left they walk. Her strides at a more relaxed pace as she kept her wand held firmly in her grasp.

There was nothing immediately concerning about the way Dahlia's weasel had led her. Only... a strange scratching sound, followed by an occasional CLUCK CLUCK.

What in Merlin's name could that be?

Oh sweet Circe, thank MERLIN.

It took much restraint not to rush at Cece and beg her never to leave them. Now this felt a little more balanced. Now it was two on each side. NOW she could go inside feeling a little safer.

And look, poop. "I say we move away from the poo. Both weasels are broken. We're doomed and gonna die. Let's not die this way." She said, pointing to the clean path.
In the middle of the so-called clean path lay a softly snoozing older jarvey known as Mozart. It was easy for Mozart to sleep anywhere, considering his advanced age and lack of hearing. He didn't even flinch at the approach of this group.

The fifth year could not keep up with the direction changes! They went right then right again and left. “Remember to have your mirror at the ready,’’ she warned Heath, looking over her shoulder to ensure that he was with her.
If they were to use the mirror to look ahead, they might spot a sleek and shiny jarvey preening herself and whispering, "DRAGONS? Dragons! WHERE ARE MY DRAGONS?"

...it might be wise to exercise caution around this one.

"Ready to face whatever it is ahead, Atlas?" she asked as she looked over at him with a firmness to her tone. Luckily, she could still see and hear many of her classmates, but still.
Mollywobbles slowed up after a while, looking around to see if anyone spotted her? Weren't they following?!

"Dear dear dear dear," she murmured, looking at the ground as a large shadow loomed over her. "Oh dear...."

Understatement of the day?

Avalon and the first year had gone on ahead--either they didn't hear her or didn't want her along. And she seemed to have lost the first year, Moose, whom she'd been trying to help--she hoped he was behind somewhere or had found someone else to go with.

She finally heard Curtis and company entering the maze behind her and waited for them to catch up. She really shouldn't have rushed ahead like that, but those hooded figures had her rattled and she just couldn't stay out there with them a moment longer. She heard noises coming from within the maze, and up ahead saw it fork to the left and the right. Hmm--which way should they go? Probably didn't make much difference, both ways were probably bad. She walked a few steps further and tried to peer off to the right to see if anything was there.

Maybe they should follow the weasels lead. Kinsay agreed with Emmerson (as per usual). She gave the weasel another tug, turning to head back out the--PHOEBE!

Kinsay just about latched herself to her sister the moment the older girl made her presence known. It made the younger Gryffindor feel a little better knowing that Phoebe was able to continue participating in class. But. But. But. "I was so scared for you, Fifi." Forget walking through a maze, Kizzy wanted sister hugs. That's all she had wanted to do earlier too, but she was too busy being pinned down to the ground by an angered best friend. So maze hugs would do.

Still hugging the Feebs, Kiz could spott Cece just behind. Cece recieved a sympathetic look. Everything was awful and Cece looked just as upset at Kizzy felt. At least they could all be together now. "Agreed." Kinsay only turned to absently respond to whatever Emm had just said. She didn't actually process any of it, but there was no reason not to agree with Emmerson. So. It was probably fine.

Except.

GASP.

"Look its sleeping!" Kinsay had to resist the urge to run over and pick the sleeping jarvey up with her hands, but it didn't stop her from running up to it (dragging her own leashed weasel with her) so that she could get a better look.

Maze who?

Mamie was quite pleased with the results of her knockback jinx on the cockatrice. She allowed herself a brief moment to be proud of herself, then turned to see Quinn's weasel chase after the cockatrice. She was glad he'd actually come back. And he brought friends!

"Let's keep going!" she urged Ashley and the two first years. The path was clear now, so they could keep going or maybe go around another turn. She felt like they were close to the end. She rebalanced her mirror, weasel leash, and wand in case the cockatrice came back or they found another one.

There was certainly something ferret-like digging a little hole under one of the hedges. Just its hindquarters were visible to the girls as they checked around the corner.
Avalon had only peeked around the first corner (using her mirrored forearm, of course), when she heard a slight digging sound. Kneeling down to follow it and squinting closely—it was quite difficult to see clearly with the sunglasses—she saw a little bit of jarvey fur sticking out from one of the hedges. She smiled as tapped the ground in front of it, trying to lure it out. "Hey little jarvey! Wanna come join us?" Avalon would definitely feel better with at least one jarvey on their side. As of now, the mundane weasel had yet to impress her. Though she had to admit it was adorable. She glanced back at Delilah. "Any inclination on which way to go?" She had a feeling that they should make a right, but she'd see if the jarvey (or her classmate) had any gut feelings first.

Though they had previously retreated, the hooded figures were waiting within the maze. They hid within the shadows, obscured by the shrubbery and their long hoods. They watched and waited to make their presence known.

One emerged from within a corner of the maze, hovering not far behind the chatty Slytherin (FearlessLeader19) and Ravenclaw pair (MadMadamMalfoy). Their quill took profuse notes as it loomed over the duo.

Too close for comfort.

The large shadow drew closer and closer to the jarvey and those following it, however, it was not the jarvey that was of interest to the hooded figure. Bringing itself closer to the unlikely pair, the figure began taking profuse notes and shook its head at the Slytherin (kayquilz). Yes, it was no wonder her badge was taken away. Shame. A pureblood, no less.

"Ready to face whatever it is ahead, Atlas?" she asked as she looked over at him with a firmness to her tone. Luckily, she could still see and hear many of her classmates, but still.

Regrets. There were...more regrets.

Atlas could be a very literal person SOOOOO earlier when she had told him her job would be he wand and his would be the ferret...he took that literally. Now he felt like she thought him stupid for this assumption and it made him a little hot and bothered. Enough so that he sort of wished that he could hex that arched eyebrow of hers off but he didn't know the spell yet SO there really was no point in the thought. Or dwelling on it. "I know what multitasking is! I can walk and chew gum at the same time!" he retorted with a huff, a very immature 11-year-old huff that he instantly regretted because what if she were to abandon him now for talking back!? Or...what if SHE hexed off HIS eyebrow, since it was all arched now in retaliation.

Aboli Song. He could remember that. And he was relieved to finally have a name to the face too so that when he was eventually in trouble here in this maze he knew who to call specifically for help. He wasn't sure what to do with the additional information, but figure he should maybe offer up something rather than blurt out the first thought that had come to mind...which probably WOULD have got him left behind. He could hold his tongue sometimes. "My dad was Gryffindor head of house and Astronomy professor before he wasn't." Somewhat using her own phrasing and trying to sound and look interesting to her so she would keep him around. Maybe those big eyes paired with his ferret's cuteness was enough though.

Rule following message not received. Oops.

He still needed to name the ferret something. Or did it already have a name? It was too late to ask Professor Williamson this...and Atlas knew how much HE hated being called the wrong name so...he wouldn't call the creature cradled in his arms anything.

And then there was a JARVY! JARVY JARVY JARVY!

The first year was practically bouncing on his tip toes as it sniffed his robes. "Walking. Atlas. Cockled----" he replied to the jarvy, answering his questions and then trying to repeat the sound as his older wand wielding companion began to move on. "I am, Miss Song" he squeaked, his wand still in its holster (distracted by furry friends) and his arms hugging the ferret to his chest and just not quite sure what to make of her firmness. "Or else I wouldn't have come into the hedge maze at all." He felt the need to point that out before he looked down at the jarvy. "Come on, Cockledoodledo!" ...was that it's name? Atlas didn't know any better. "We're following the poop!"

And then, rather than his wand because he had already forgotten about that instruction (BECAUSE THE JARVY), Atlas fished from his pocket one of the two mirror shards and scurried his way over to the end of the hedge and held it up to see around the corner first. The ferret still with its head buried in his armpit.

Anything? Anyone?

He just wanted to be useful and since he had next to no spells in his arsenal...this was something he could do.

...and then there came The Hoods™...one of them...and Atlas SAW he...she...IT... because he was looking back towards Aboli for validation in his actions. His bright blue eyes widened and he sort of gaped at the figure for a bit before shaking himself from his stare and turning his attention back to the reflection of the mirror.

”Friends.” There was relief in having caught up to them and Cecelia reached for Phoebe’s hand once the younger girls were distracted, giving it a squeeze. She was afraid talking about what she’d seen might make her cry, but there was a LOOK she gave. A worried one. She’d been so worried about Feebs, but she’d been brave and perfect and carried on anyway and Cece admired her for that.

Honestly, getting her little weasel away from the poop sounded like a good plan to her, too. She tugged gently, following Emm and Kizzy in the opposite direction, happy to let them lead for a while. ”We’re not gonna die, Emm. We just have to keep our mirror..mirror pieces ready and keep our glasses on and we’ll be golden.” The cockatrice was actually the only thing she wasn’t afraid of at the moment.

N’aww..

The sleeping jarvey was adorable and when she’d caught up to Kizz, she knelt down to give it a gentle poke. ”Wakey-wakey.” Having another creature to help them navigate this place couldn’t hurt.

There was a small span in time between when she had left Kale outside the maze and when she heard him calling to her, that she had thought he wouldn't do so. With him being several years ahead of herself, she had expected him to go off with his friends. Not to mention she had sounded like a babbling fool when she had spoken to him.

She grinned more to herself than anything, coming to a stop to wait for him. This didn't quite please Rusty the Weasel who squeaked at her in annoyance. "Yes, yes, we'll get going in a second, promise," Lia hummed to him, glancing over her shoulder at Kale. "I didn't think you'd join us but.. hi there." She smiled up at him brightly, momentarily distracted by his hair and pretty face.

Good thing for Rusty who once again gave a tug at his harness, yanking her to the left much harder than expected for such a small creature. "Ow! Okay, easy... Rusty wants to go this way... so were going that way." No more explanation needed than that, sorry.

With Rusty leading them along, Lia passed her shard of broken mirror to Kale. "Do you think you can fit those together or something? Make them larger maybe?" Or he could just be in charge of using the mirrors to check around corners since she had to hold onto Rusty.

They must have been going the right way. Not only did Lia not see anything at all in their path but nothing could be heard either. This kept her moving at a steady pace, fully trusting her little companion.

Until... what was that? Dahlia glanced around, stopping in tracks without warning. "Do you hear that?" It was a quiet scratching followed by... was that... clucking?! It had to be close by... but where? "Should we go back? Keep going? Turn up ahead?" Kale help!

Was she going to get a seventh year lost in a maze, probably, would she did it on purpose, of course not. Gemma wasn't sure which way to go and felt she lost the Jarvey that was moving as she saw one just playing with the first year. Her weasel seemed to be interested in going left though so she thought maybe they could.

"Shall we try this way?" Though she was starting to wonder if they had a choice since her little creature on a leash headed that way determined to catch up to anything in front of it.

So left she went and hoped the seventh year was okay with it.

The weasel, slightly disappointed that the cockatrice was flipendo'd before he could get to it, trotted back over to Quinn in a huff. "Hey, where was that energy earlier?" Quinn asked, picking the weasel back up and setting it on his shoulder. The weasel harrumphed, or as close to a harrumph as a weasel could get, and it turned its head away from Quinn. He rolled his eyes at the theatrics.

Quinn caught back up with Mamie and the others as they continued on their way. "So... do the weasels really know their way our of here? Or are they just leading us away from the cockatrices?"

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

"I agree with Mamie. Maybe the cockatrices are guarding the way to the end." And Ash wanted to get out fast. "I think the weasels are leading us towards the cockatrices. But maybe that's the right way? I'm not sure." Getting into the head of your opponent was a confusing process. "Let's just keep going until we hit the end or a blocked way. Then we can mark it off so that we don't go in the wrong direction twice." STrAteGy.

He smirked at the thought. Tempting, but they were all in danger either way. "Sure, you're welcome too as well Moose." He added, in case you know they were all going as a group. Though it didn't take long before Violet ran off ahead.

"Right, let's go." Curtis said to Bella and anyone else nearby. He bent down to set Toby the weasel, "Lead us to victory," He added. Now he could go into the maze. Anything to get away from those creepy hooded figures.

The fifth year could not keep up with the direction changes! They went right then right again and left. “Remember to have your mirror at the ready,’’ she warned Heath, looking over her shoulder to ensure that he was with her.

Any other time, Heath would’ve giggled along with Claudine, and he almost did. But then he remembered what had happened to Phoebe when she so much as smiled earlier. He didn’t want the same thing (if not worse) to happen to him or - Merlin forbid - Claudine! He shot her a worried look, holding a finger to his lips in a silent warning to be quiet. Although he couldn’t see any hooded figures at the moment, he knew they had to be out there somewhere!

At the time, he thought he was doing the right thing by partnering with her. Williamson had said they were going to the maze in small groups. Going it alone could be seen as an act of defiance, and it looked like most everyone else was already partnered. That and he was too shy to approach someone he didn’t know! But now he wasn’t so sure… Just in case, he was going to keep his distance and not say anything unless it directly related to the task at hand. Holding tight to Lucie’s leash, he followed a few feet behind Claudine and Charlie. “Right,” he replied to her reminder, only speaking because he was too far behind for her to see him nod.

Holding up an arm, Heath used the mirrors attached to his padding to peer down the path ahead. He didn’t find a cockatrice, only a jarvey blathering about dragons. Once again, he had to stop himself from smiling. She wasn’t Mollywobbles, but still adorable! Maybe they could get her to show them the way through the maze. “Hello there,” he whispered, cautiously approaching the jarvey. “Can you help us?”

He didn’t expect her to answer or understand what he said. He knew that jarveys were like little furry parrots; they repeat words they’ve already heard with no rhyme or reason. Still he couldn’t help but wonder if there was some logic to her babbling. He’d seen pictures of cockatrices in books, and some of them did look a bit like dragons. Maybe the “dragons” of which she spoke were actually cockatrices, and if she was asking where they are, that path might be safe. He turned to Claudine with a questioning look. “Do you think there’s any element of truth to what she’s saying?” he asked.

He turned to Claudine with a questioning look. “Do you think there’s any element of truth to what she’s saying?” he asked.

At first, Claudine couldn’t figure out why Heath was being spoilsport about her giggles. What? Didn’t he feel extra happy during CoMC lessons like she did? A few seconds later, she put it together. Oh. A quick glance around her told her there were no Hoods nearby for now. A nod was given to Heath, showing that she understood.

Anyway.

They both had a task to do and so she followed her own advice used the mirror to look ahead. Almost immediately she saw a jarvey. Naturally, Claudine was excited; she loved jarveys! Ohh, could she bundle the jarvey up and take her back to the Slytherin common room? But also… dragons? Was this Williamson in jarvey form? Claudine almost laughed at the thought. Almost.

Yes, could the little jarvey!dragon help? “Can you lead us to the exit?’’ Jarveys weren’t usually helpful; the lesson when the students had been introduced to jarveys last term was still fresh in her mind. Albus hadn’t helped her get through the activity at all. The girl tried another tactic. “Where was the last place you saw the dragons?’’ Heath’s question was considered. “I think there might be something to it. But with jarveys, who knows?’’

At that moment, Claudine looked over her shoulder. It was mainly to check on the amount of students behind them. Instead, she was rewarded with noticing the single Hood. Acting casually, she turned back to Heath. “We’ve got company,’’ she muttered. Immediately, Claudine knew they needed to do their best with this activity - for Williamson, her last remaining favourite professor.

Thank Merlin, she had found her group at last! And the one girl, Bella, wanted to go left. Violet had been looking down the right fork, but she supposed it didn't matter much--the whole maze was probably full of dangerous creatures by now (not the least of them the hooded guys). Violet looked down at Jeremy the Weasel to see what he thought. The weasel looked back down the right fork and then to the left, and then looked back at her, and she swore that if a weasel could shrug, Jeremy did so. "Okay, Jeremy, I guess it doesn't make much difference either." She turned to the others and said, "My weasel doesn't seem to have a strong opinion either way, nor do I, so going left is fine with me."

There was a JARVEY! to the right though, a lithe white female with reddish eyes. She had her beady eyes fixed on something, her entire body tensed like she was about to pounce.

Then she sensed the girl and turned, doing a little backflip in the air in greeting. She hoped they saw her; Ivory's pale fur should stick out against the dark bushes. She didn't leave her watch-spot, though, her body tensing as her red eyes fixed on something in the distance.

This was the way. Yes, there was a cockatrice ahead, but it was the fastest way out.

Maze who?

Mozart rolled over at the poke, his belly now up in the air. One of his paws kicked loosely in his dream, bumping into the girl's poking hand.

Oh, that alerted him to awaken.

He let out a biggggggggg sleepy yawn and smacked his little mouth together as he woke. "Eh eh eh eh ehhhhhh," the jarvey yawned, still on his back, his soft and fluffy belly exposed.

Would she be a dear and rub it for him? He loooooooooved pet-pets.

As of now, the mundane weasel had yet to impress her. Though she had to admit it was adorable. She glanced back at Delilah. "Any inclination on which way to go?" She had a feeling that they should make a right, but she'd see if the jarvey (or her classmate) had any gut feelings first.
The jarvey stopped digging, her head suddenly popping up where her behind had just been.

"You?" she asked, tilting her head at the Ravenclaw. "Tube?" Her whiskers twitched in the direction of the weasel curiously.

Too many questions. There were TOO many QUESTIONS for her!

Cersei let out a shrill squeak as the two --- no THREE! --- tall people approached her, her little hands on either side of her face like a child who had been left in New York while the rest of their family traveled to Paris for Christmas. "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK!!!!"

She took off like a shot, leading the way toward one opening, then another, whipping around corners so quickly it was almost impossible for anyone to keep up.

Unless they were running too.

Aboli paid almost no attention to the hooded figures. She was doing her thing, doing her best to make sure she was aware of her surroundings completely. And they didn't seem to pose a threat to her just yet, so they were being ignored.

Aboli WAS trying to follow Mollywobbles though! Was Atlas following behind?! Or near her?! She turned her head to make sure. "I'm very glad you can. Some people have difficulty with it," she said almost in a distracted manner as she drew closer and closer to the the jarvey, doing her best to use her mirror to see her path ahead before trekking forward. It was awkward, having to move like this, but what could she do?

Huh. So his dad was pretty cool, then. Aboli, lips thin in concentration, merely nodded. "Cool. Okay. We're about to be reaaaay close behind this jarvey, and there's like.." she squinted into her mirror again, over her shoulder to where Mollywobbles was. "There's a shadow. So. That might be our cockatrice....so let's be careful," she whispered. Her wand was in her free hand as she took a step at a time in the FORWARD direction, shielding her eyes and holding the mirror in a way that she could walk FORWARD while still relying on its reflection and whatnot.

"I AM MISS SONG!" Ferret Bueller sang out, totally unbothered as he scampered between the Gryffindor's feet, half-intent on tripping him and half-trying to get him to play with HIMB instead of the weasel. "I AM MISS SONG! MISS SONG! MISS SONG! MISSONG! MISSONG! MISSONG! MISSONG!" How many times did a word have to be repeated before it lost all meaning?

Mollywobbles, meanwhile, had encountered the source of the shadows, which was... not a cockatrice.

It was more hooded figures, four or five or six of them that seemed to be standing in a circle and conversing. She didn't know what to do when they were in the way of the quickest path to the exit, so she quite simply ran through them, dodging from foot to foot before any could kick or hex her.

At least, she thought she was quick enough...
