Default Potions Lesson 2

It had been a while since there had been a practical potions class, the lack of magic having wreaked havoc on Noble's meticulously planned curriculum. It wasn't out of choice, mind; the lack of brewing was frustrating the Potions Master as much as the extra theory classes were probably frustrating the students.

Still, there were promising signs of doing something other than theory this morning. For one, Noble had a lit burner at the front of the classroom, the orange flame flickering with life. And not too far from it was a large beaker of wooden splints, and a row of opaque jars that looked suspiciously like they might contain ingredients. Looking further afield, there were a number of tea-towel covered objects spaced out along the side bench.

Curious indeed.

Noble is to be found in front of the blackboard, muttering a curse under his breath as his faded hand dropped the chalk he'd been writing with and he reached down to pick it up. It had been a long few months, and though he'd been trying to keep his head up for his students, to keep things as normal as possible, seeing today's date on his calendar had hit him like bludger to the stomach. Hopefully class would go as smoothly as he hoped. It was something different, at least.

The girl had become even friendlier with him ever since he had made soup when she had come down with the cold. While waiting for things to get underway, she watched the other students trickle in and tried to remember their names. Sadly, she failed in most cases.

So… metallurgy was today’s topic?

The Snakette had nothing to add to the question for the older students seemed to have it covered. Yes, she’d just stay silent this time around even though she thought that the Professor had chosen quite an interesting topic.
Heath returned Claudine’s smile with one of his own, but he suddenly had to stifle a laugh when she called him Heathen. Was his name really that difficult to remember? Maybe he should start using his full name in more than just written material. As silly a name as Heathcliff was, at least it left an impression! Come to think of it, hadn’t someone else also called him Heathen earlier this term? “Not my name, but it’s okay,” he said with a soft chuckle. “I’ve been called much worse.” That last sentence wasn’t even a joke. Compared to some of the mean names he’d been called in muggle school, Heathen was practically a term of endearment!

Before it occurred to Heath to remind Claudine what his name actually was, Professor Nien Nunb was speaking, so he turned his attention to the front of the room. Had those jars been there the whole time? He hadn’t noticed them when he came in… or maybe he did and forgot. Stupid memory! He was pleased to hear they weren’t doing theory today, and his mood perked up even more when the professor mentioned metallurgy. Well, this just got interesting!

Heath tried to come up with an answer to the question, but everything he remembered something to say, someone else beat him to it. Ugh, this was getting frustrating! So what could he say without repeating answers? He wracked his brains, struggling to recall what had already been said. Then an idea came to him. Had anybody mentioned the categories of metallurgy yet? He didn’t think so. His hand went up, and he said, “Metallurgy can be divided into two categories: chemical and physical.” Normally, he would’ve given an example of each category, but his failing memory refused to cooperate!

As Ewan started to reply, Noble nodded in agreement and moved to the blackboard to write down the key points. It was always good to have something for the students to refer back to, but these days, it was more important than ever. “Indeed,” Noble said, “The two subjects are intimately entwined, in part because of the materials at their cores: metals.” He noted both strong links with alchemy and extracting metals from their ores as bullet points under the title he’d written before class started.

The next hands up were Noah and Naya’s. Noble nodded at the two Gryffindors “Metals having different properties or behaviours,” Noble paraphrased, “…that is definitely something to keep in mind as we go into the next activity.” As was Missa’s answer. “They are. Metals have many different uses, in both our world and theirs.” Though they tended to go about their manufacturing processes a little differently. He added different properties of metals and uses of metals to his list.

Returning his gaze the class, he looked over Claudine sitting quietly at the back, and over to the next raised hand. Which was Nettie’s…and the Ravenclaw was clearly struggling for an answer. “Sort of,” he replied. “Whilst some metals are pure, others, such as the alloys Noah mentioned, are made of a mixture of elements. This is something we’ll get into more next lesson.” It was a little out of scope for today, if they wanted to get to the practical bit.

“An art form indeed,” Noble agreed with Islay. Despite the, er, situational difficulties this year, the Gryffindor was really coming into her own in his classes. He might even have been impressed. “And as you say, a relatively old one with all sorts of applications.”

And somewhat in contrast to that well thought out answer... “Metal-lurgy he repeated to Phoebe. “Though, yes, some people are allergic to metals. You might have seen jewellery, particularly earrings, marked as being nickel free for that reason.” As for the green skin? “What you’re talking about, Berndette, is actually the remnants of a chemical reaction between the metal and your skin, or something on your skin, such as sunscreen. Though the resultant green substance can also cause typical allergy symptoms like itchiness or redness.”

Valencia’s answer was short and sweet, and Noble nodded. “It is,” he said, adding the study of metal and its properties directly under the headed. “And you’re quite right, the name was originally applied to the process of working with metal…but was later taken to be used more generally for the study of this purpose.”. Etymology was fun; he covered some of that in his Latin course too.

Was he surprised at Eiji’s silence? A little. He knew the Slytherin knew this, and could (and would) speak lyrically on the subject. But he also saw the eagerness dancing in the boy’s eyes, which perhaps suggested he wanted to just do already. They would be soon enough.

“Yes, it’s something to do with metal,” Noble replied to Tom, unable to keep the exasperation from his voice, even if the boy’s memory loss wasn’t his fault. They all had it these days. But really, how many times had he written metal on the blackboard now? Grumble.

He could probably do with more coffee.

Thankfully, Heath gave a much better answer to finish on. “Correct. Chemical metallurgy considers how metals react with things, how to extract them when they have reacted, and various other chemical properties…whereas physical metallurgy concerns the mechanistic properties and how they perform in different scenarios. Considering both will serve you well in our first activity.” An activity it was time to start.

He moved to his second blackboard, flipping it over to reveal a pre-written list of metals. “Here is a list of metals, and around the room are several objects.” Of course, usually he would have revealed them with a flick of his wand, but instead he now started to move around the room to remove the cloths manually. “Using the information in your textbooks, as well as anything else you know about them, I want you to link the metals to the objects they are used for. In particular, think about what properties – chemical or physical - make them good for that purpose?”

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Claudine tried her best to make notes but her memory seemed to be the worst that day. As a result, her notes happened to be made up of broken sentences. In that moment, she quite forgot that her Potions textbook would be useful. Perhaps she’d ask Heathen for some help after class; he seemed to be quite knowledgeable about the topic.

Anyway.

Claudine wound up staring at the board then the objects that were revealed, trying to remember what was to be done. Eventually {and multiple times too}, it dawned on her what was to be done. She started off by writing down the metals. At this point, she was blank again so she cast her attention around to her classmates. Some were flipping through their texts so she too hurried to do the same. Immediately after turning to the page on metallurgy, the requirements to complete the activity returned to mind. She set to work immediately.

SPOILER!!: Claudine's work

Copper = stained glass
Mercury = Thermometer
Gold = Jewellery
Lead = Coins
Iron = Broom Foot Plates
Magnesium = Fencing
Aluminium = Sparklers

Who knew if they were correct? At least she had done her best.

Oh, really?! Cool! Bernie actually felt a wee bit proud for her answer, even if she couldn't remember the specifics of what she'd said. That was useful information from the professor, and she liked it, smiling to herself as she tried to doodle on her parchment.

So, uhhhhh, next activity! She naturally had to look around at the items in the room, craning her neck to see them all, before writing down her guesses. And NOW she flipped through her textbook to check her work.

SPOILER!!: Bernie's Guesses

Copper --- Coins
Mercury --- Thermometer
Gold --- Jewellery
Lead --- Stained glass
Iron --- Fencing
Magnesium --- Sparklers
Aluminium --- Broom foot plates

Isla didn't know much about metals, so she spent the next few minutes listening and learning from her classmates. Hmm...okay, okay. Got'cha. She perked up at the sound of the next activity. Ya know, going on a little scavenger hunt (which this was similar to) did sound like fun! The second year pulled a piece of parchment out her bag, grabbed a quill, and then began her roam around the room.

Name: Isla Bellchant

Thermometer: Mercury
Coins: Copper
Fencing: Iron
Jewelry: Gold
Stained glass: Copper
Broom foot plates: Aluminum
Sparklers: Magnesium

On that note, she was done. She had two if them listed as copper, which meant something was wrong. Regardless, that was her best shot.

So they weren't brewing a potion today? Morgan furrowed his brow as he looked at the jars and burner again. What were they doing then? Oh... metallurgy. That word sounded familiar in a back part of his brain, but he didn't really know much about it. Something that had to do with metal and potions apparently.

Or was it metal allergy? Morgan listened to some of the answers, then looked a bit confused Felicia and Bertie as they talked about their allergies. Was that what Professor Potions said? Metal allergy?

He was just about to announce that he wasn't allergic to anything (as far as he could remember), so he'd be fine, but then the professor clarified a little bit more about the subject today. Yeah, he really didn't know much of any of this. But when the professor wrote down some different metals and revealed the different objects, Morgan was able to make at least one connection.

"Oh, I know this one!" he said rather enthusiastically, raising his hand but not waiting to be called on. "Thermometers have mercury in them. I think it's because it's a liquid metal. And one time when I was in primary school, a kid broke one and we all had to evacuate the classroom." He wasn't exactly sure why because it was such a small amount of mercury, but early recess was plenty cool. Funny how he could remember something from a few years ago but he could hardly remember most of the names in this room.

Morgan put his hand down and looked over at Claudia and Bertie, who were writing. Oh oops, was this supposed to be a silent writing activity and not a discussion activity? Never mind then... he pulled out his textbook to help himself with the other answers.

Metallurgy?? Honestly Carsyn was going to speak up in agreement with her younger housemates talking about metal allergies, but it was a good thing she didn't. Cause on some level it didn't sound correct. Not metal allergy, but metallurgy. Good thing she didn't speak up cause that would have been embarrassing. So next on the list was to match up objects around the room with a list of metals. Jotting the metals down in her parchment, she peered around the room to see what she could determine, figuring she would write the ones she knew first.

SPOILER!!: Carsyn's Parchment
Copper - coins
Mercury - thermometer
Gold - jewellery
Lead - broom foot plates
Iron - fencing
Magnesium - sparklers
Aluminium - stained glass

She wasn't particularly sure about the stained glass or even the sparklers or broom foot plates, but she figured a guess was better than nothing, right??

Naya took lots of notes, as her classmates gave their answers. When the professor gave his feedback, she added to her notes. Now though, it was time to move on to the next activity. They would have to do a little matching exercise. Naya looked at the blackboard. Thank goodness they had everything written down. That way, she had no chance to forget anything.

Looking at the lists of metals and objects, Naya thought about what went with what. Some answers she was sure about, others not so much. Hopefully she would be able to get the questionable answers right. She knew that old fashioned thermometers had mercury inside of them. Naya also knew that lead was used in making stained glass windows. Of course there was gold in some jewelry and copper had been used in coins, at least partially. She took out her textbook and began to look through it for some help with the rest. If all else failed, she would resort to guessing. After focusing on each item, Naya began to write.

SPOILER!!: Naya’s notes
Copper-Coins
Mercury-Thermometer
Gold-Jewelry
Lead-Stained Glass
Iron-Broom foot plates
Magnesium-Sparklers
Aluminum-Fencing

Once the answers were written, Naya looked them over. She was not 100% sure about everything, but she was going to stick with her first thoughts. Usually when you started second guessing yourself, you tended to end up with the wrong answer. These were her choices and she was sticking with them.

Arts TRANSPONSTER!

In all honesty, Catherine did not know much about alchemy. That was a very advanced subject, and she wasn't particularly interested in the monetary value of it. The whole concept did intrigue her to some degree, however. Not enough to make her research about it all herself, but she did get ready to take as detailed notes as possible. But they'd focus on metallurgy that day. How mundane.

Oh well.

Even though they were told they wouldn't be focusing much on theory that day, the girl wrote fast yet neatly as her classmates replied to professor Noble's first question, making sure she didn't leave anything out - expect the stupid answers, as there were always some coming from some particular Gryffindors. Eye roll. Instead of copying the points the older man was writing on the board, Catherine wrote her notes with her own words, as that helped her to remember them better - and Merlin she needed all the help she could get with that nowadays.

Catherine read over the list of metals as their teacher revealed it before watching the man uncover each item one by one around the room. When he instructed them to get to work, she wrote down the list and kept writing as she took another look at each object professor Noble had revealed.

Text Cut: Parchment

Copper - Coins. Stained glass. Broom foot plates.
Mercury - Thermometer.
Gold - Jewellery. Coins.
Lead - Stained glass.
Iron - Fencing.
Magnesium -
Aluminium - Fencing. Sparklers.

It probably took Catherine longer than necessary to make her list, and truthfully, she didn't feel she was quite done. Many of those objects could be made using different metals, and while she did write a few options down, she then started to consider whether that was what professor Noble had meant. Technically, one could have their broom footrest and/or fence made of gold, for instance, if one wanted to show off their wealth. Catherine herself knew people who she thought would do that. Then again, others would be and do the extreme opposite. Although she didn't believe aluminium would be a particularly good broom footrest or fence, maybe some poor people chose that material for their items because... well, because it was cheaper than gold, for one.

Cole had somehow made it to potions class on time. How he couldn’t tell you if you asked. Luckily he had just followed some other students he assumed was in his year and had walked into the potions classroom before the door shut. The lit burner at the front of the classroom along with several jars, wood splinters and tea towel covered objects promised some action in the lesson. Probably no potion brewing though. Cole had greeted the professor on his way in with a cheery "Hey Professor!" before he had found himself a desk to sit at.

When the lesson got started Cole listened to some of the answers from his peers and got totally confuzzled by Phoebe and Bernadette mentioning metal allergies. Had the professor asked for that? With brows furrowed Cole answered with hesitation "I think a person working with metallurgy i think is called a metallurgist? Also metallurgy focuses on properties and behaviours of different metals."

For the first activity they we’re going on a hunt around the classroom matching metals with objects which could be fun. Cole wrote the metals down first on a piece of parchment that he had pulled out of his backpack. Staring down at the metals he only recognized gold and possibly copper. Getting up from his seat Cole got to work.

Back at his desk Cole reviewed his matches unsure if he had made more than one right match. He didn’t sit close enough to peek at anyone else’s matches so he’d have to wait for Professor N’s correct answers.

Morgan eventually found a section in his textbook that referenced some metal properties and he pulled out a piece of parchment to work on this silent, writing activity. It was really hard to keep quiet, did the professor know?

He already knew that mercury was found in thermometers, so that was an easy one. What about the others? He started a list to see what he could deduce.

Copper - coins maybe?
Mercury - thermometer!
Gold - coins? galleons are gold, right? but also jewelry
Lead - stained glass
Iron - broom foot plates
Magnesium - sparklers
Aluminium - fencing?

Some of them he really wasn't sure and tried to figure out through visual observation and what the textbook said about them. But some of them were pure guesses by means of elimination.

Wow, they were quiet today. Noble hadn’t intended for them to work in silence…nor for them to stay in their seats as Bernadette and Carsyn seemed determined to do. It was meant to be a fun lesson; something a little different…and even those camped out at the back (Claudine) seemed to be taking it more seriously than nodded. He almost nodded appreciatively as Morgan broke the silence, and, gave not only a correct answer, but also the correct reasoning. Hopefully some of the others were taking note. Naya and Catherine certainly seemed to have written plenty down on their parchments so far. Meanwhile, Isla had the sense to actually get up and look more closely at the objects, and Cole and some of the others soon followed.

As quills were downed, and eyes returned to the front, Noble took it as a sign to move on. [b] “As I’m sure you’ve realised, there wasn’t necessarily a one-to-one match for metals and objects. However, this is how I would have matched them…” He picked up his piece of chalk and moved to the blackboard, writing the name of the object matched to each metals as he explained his reasoning. “Gold, as I’m sure most of you are aware, is used for jewellery. It’s valuable, and is pretty inert – that is, doesn’t react with chemicals on your skin and leave the black marks Bernadette mentioned earlier. Copper, is cheap, durable and readily available. This makes it good for coins. Its value, or lack thereof is also important here – you don’t want the metal the coin is made from to be worth more than the coin’s face value.”

“As Morgan shared, mercury is the liquid metal used in thermometers. As it gets warmer, mercury expands in a predictable way, which we can use to tell the temperature.” Hmm, what next? “Lead is a soft metal. Easily pliable by hand, one common use is to piece together the often elaborate shapes in stain glass. What lead would not be good for is fencing – iron would be a much better choice, due to it’s strength. However, in pure form it is prone to oxidisation – more commonly known as rusting – which can make it fragile, and therefore, a metal mixture, or alloy as Noah said earlier, would prove a better choice.”

And that left two metals. “Iron can also be used for broom footplates. However, on several of the more advanced models, they’re more likely to be made of aluminium. Strong and light – of which, the latter is obviously hugely important when considering resistance and weight in the air. And finally, magnesium can be used for sparklers, as it burns easily with a bright white flame.” Noble paused briefly, letting those who were still writing catch up. As he did so, he moved back to his desk.

“I’ve mentioned several properties of different metals now…and maybe you considered others whilst trying to match up the metals and objects. As well as helping us choose the right metal for the job, certain properties can also help us identify the metal in a substance. I said that magnesium is good for sparklers because it burns a bright white. Well, different metals produce different colour flames…and this is very useful indeed, if, say, you’re designing magical fireworks.”

Yes, magical fireworks. They had heard that correctly.

Noble leant forward, carefully adjusting the air hole of the lit burner on his desk until the flame turned blue. He then put on his safety goggles. “The experiment we’ll be doing in the rest of the lesson is called the flame test, and we can use it to identify the metals from their flame colours. In each of these containers,” he gestured to the opaque jars on his desk, “is a powdered compound containing a different metal. First you’re going to dip one of these pre-soaked spills into the powder. They’re pre-soaked in water so that wood doesn’t burn, only the metal.” He picked up a spill, and dipped it in the powder a couple of times, so that the bottom inch or so was decently covered. “Then you’re going to hold it in the middle of the blue flame, and observe the colour change as the powder reacts.” He did so, the flame turning a bright purple; that particular compound contained potassium. “Once you’re done observing, put the spill safely on the heatproof mat to cool. Do that for each powder, and use the table of colours on page 243 in your textbook to identify the metal.”

He put the spill on his mat, before picking up the rag he used for cleaning the blackboard. He wiped off the previous list of metals and objects, and proceeded to write up the instructions for the experiment for them to refer to if needed. As he did so, he was reminded of something. “You’ll need to carefully light your burners from the one on my desk. Dry spills are next to the sink as usual. Once you’ve put on your goggles, you may begin.”

Variety of metal salts, labelled A-E.

Instructions:
1) Light your gas burners from the flame at the front of the class using a dry spill.
2) Dip a clean damp damp spill into the metal compound, and make sure it’s well covered.
3) Hold the powder-covered spill in the middle of a blue flame, and watch the colour it burns.
4) Once you're done observing, put the burnt spill on the heatproof mat.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Indeed Claudine had noticed that there were multiple metals that could be matched to the options but she had chose to match them one to one. Her answers were compared to Professor Nibbles. Three out of seven was the amount she got correct and this left her feeling very disappointed in herself. That disappointment didn’t last long because she was certain she heard Nibbles mentioned fireworks. How interesting.

The third year watched and listened very carefully as to what should be done. Her only problem was remembering the instructions but thankfully Nibbles had that covered by having them written on the board. All that was left was for Claudine to get started. First, page 243 in the textbook was found. The pair of goggles was placed over her eyes before she collected a dry spill and a flame from Nibbles’ burner to light her own. The flame was adjusted until it burned the same shade of blue as the original. That spill was placed on the mat Claudine had set up a couple of minutes prior.

Now for the fun part.

Five damp spills were collected and each was dunked into one of the containers on the professor’s desk. The third year made sure to get the spills coated with their respective metals as best as possible then returned to her workstation. The covered spills were put to rest on one corner {and in the same order as the jars on Nibbles’ desk} of the mat opposite of the one used to light the burner earlier. Getting them all organised in one place would save her the trips to and from Nibbles’ desk repeatedly.

She picked up the first spill with the substance stuck to it. That spill was held to the middle of the burner’s flame. Intense gaze fixed on it, Claudine watched in great fascination as the colour changed in what seemed to her to be a rapid pace to blue- white. A glance at the board told her this was the lead spill. Only focusing on this task, the girl continued, watching as colours burn purple, white, red and green. Wow. Just wow. Who knew a potions lesson could be this interesting? Claudine double checked that the burnt spills were properly on the mat then turned her attention to making her notes.

When everyone had given their answers and the professor had finished talking about metals, it was time to move on. Naya listened carefully as the professor explained what they would be doing next. It was an experiment and it sounded like fun. The Gryffindor wrote notes and copied the information from the board. She did not want to forget anything while she was going through the process.

Now it was time to get to work. First, Naya put on her goggles and placed a heat proof mat at her work station. Then she went to get a dry spill. She lit it from the flame in the front of the room and then returned to her area to light her burner. Once that was done, Naya went back up to get her pre-moistened spills. She dipped them one by one into the powders, making sure to get enough powder on them while keeping them in order. When she got back to her burner, she lined the spills up, so she could remember which one was which.

Naya opened her textbook to the assigned page and saw the table of colors. She put the book nearby. Then starting with the first spill, Naya placed the tip into her flame. It turned blue-white. Checking her book, she saw that it contained lead. After setting the spill on the mat, she wrote the information down in her notes and proceeded to the next spill. Spill number two burned purple and that was potassium, according to the text book. Naya continued with the next three spills and found white-magnesium, red-iron and green-copper. Each time she rested the burned spill on the mat when she was done and wrote the details in her notes. When she was finished, Naya wished she could light all of the colorful sparklers at the same time. That would be cool to see. Unfortunately, she knew that wouldn’t be a good idea. Finishing up her notes, she waited for any additional instructions.

Isla tried her hardest to follow along as the professor explained all the right answers. She crossed out the ones she'd gotten wrong and jotted down the correct answer. She'd done fairly decent for a person who really didn't know that much about metals.

Anyway, apparently they were going to do some kind of flame test now. Isla made sure she had on all the correct safety equipment then collected a pre-soaked spill. She dunked it into the first container. She followed that up by dunking the second spill into the second container. She continued this way until she'd dunked five spills into their respective containers and coated them each with a different metal.

Claudette Bun was working at a nearby station, and Isla noted the way the girl organized her own spills. Taking a page out of Bun's book, Isla organized her spills much in the same way. She picked up her first spill and held it to the flame. Slightly fascinated at what was about to possibly happen, the second year watched with interest. Blue...white. Cool! She marked that spill down as 'lead'.

Cole had done fairly decent on his metal guesses. He had gotten from what the Professor was saying half of them right and the rest wrong but it was no wonder since the first wrong made a chain of wrongs. He didn’t fret though. Metals was new to him. Next they were going to do a flame test which sounded pretty cool from listening and watching Professor N’s demonstration. With his safety goggles on and his dragonhide gloves on his hands Cole had fetched the rest of the equipment needed. He didn’t start with the flame test before he had made sure his desk was fully cloaked by the heatproof mat. He didn’t want to accidentally burn up his desk.

After lighting his burner up front and having acquired enough damp spills and powders for the 5 tests Cole was ready to give the first one a try back at his desk. With some nervousness mixed with excitement he took a clean damp spill and dipped it into the first metal compound making sure it was well covered with powder before he stuck it into the flame and observed it change into a very greeeeeeen slytherin colour which made him steal a quick glance over at Claudine and Isla. Then he noted on his parchment after referencing in his textbook that he had found copper.

Cole then proceeded to repeat the same procedure with the remaining 4 powders and taking notes as he did so when he saw in turn iron red, then magnesium white, after that potassium purple and lastly lead blue and white on his parchment. Done and feeling good for completing the test Cole looked up at professor N and waited to hear if there were more steps to the test.

Although some of his matches had been somewhat educated guesses, Morgan was pleased to see that he wasn't too far off on some and was correct on most. And were they going to actually make some fireworks?? The Gryffindor perked up a bit at the mention, though he wasn't completely sure the experiment they were doing was in line with making fireworks. It sounded kind of cool anyway though.

It seemed like a lot of walking back and forth from the front of the class back to his workstation, but, once he put his goggles on, Morgan set about getting a dry spill and lighting it from the front burner, then transferring the flame to his own burner. And then for the first test. He headed back up to the front and dipped one of the damp spills into a random jar.

Back at his own workstation, Morgan held the powder-covered end of the spill into the flame and watched as it turned purple. Cool! A quick glance in his textbook told him that one was potassium.

SPOILER!!: Catch up
Heath didn’t think his answer was very good, especially since he couldn’t think of any examples to go with the two categories, so he was relieved when Professor Nien Nunb accepted it. He jotted down some notes on his classmates’ answers as well as the information the professor provided. Oh, so they would need to consider both categories of metallurgy for the activity? This just got interesting! He listened to the activity instructions, his eyes following the professor around the room as he revealed the objects. Well, that explained the cloths! He was wondering what was under those.

Heath picked up his quill and a piece of parchment to write down the list of metals on the board. His eyes darted around the room from one object to the next, then back to the list in front of him. Okay, so right off the bat he knew that copper went with coins and gold had to go with jewelry, partially because of Fifi and Beru blathering on about metal allergies earlier, and iron… He remembered his grandparents had a wrought iron fence around their house, so it stood to reason that that would go with fencing. There, he was halfway done already!

The remaining four metals required a bit more thinking. Heath pored over his list, lost in thought when someone’s voice (MF) distracted him. Of, course! Mercury went with thermometers; how could he have forgotten? Duh, Heath! He inwardly berated himself as he jotted that down. Now there were just three metals left: lead, aluminum and magnesium. Hmm… He didn’t know what metal was used in sparklers, but he’d never heard of magnesium being used in stained glass or broom foot plates, though to be fair, he never paid much attention to them before. For now, he was going to guess that magnesium was used in sparklers, but what about lead and aluminum? He thought for a minute. If he recalled correctly, lead was a lot heavier than aluminum, so probably not ideal for broom foot plates. He was just going to make an educated guess that aluminum went with the foot plates, which left lead for the stained glass.

Now that he had his preliminary guesses, he consulted his textbook to verify them, but the professor started speaking again before he could finish. He listened intently, periodically checking his own list for mistakes, and what do you know? He got them all correct, and he was mostly just guessing!
.

Heath paid close attention to Nien Nunb’s demonstration, watching in amazement as the flame changed from blue to purple. Wow, that kind of looked like a lightsaber! As he opened his book to page 243, he saw that all of the colors listed in the table were lightsaber colors, and an idea suddenly occurred to him. Maybe there was a way he could combine metallurgy and magic (assuming they ever got it back) to build a functioning lightsaber! His mind was buzzing with possibilities. First, he’d need to make the spill bigger… an engorgement charm, maybe? Then coat the entire thing in metal powder and conceal it with a disillusionment charm so that when it burned, all that would show was the flame itself, not the spill. Yeah, that was good… The only part he was stuck on was how to ignite it without having to use his wand. He was in a hurry to jot down his ideas before he forgot them, but he doubted the professor would approve if he caught him writing something not related to the activity. Instead, he marked the page in his textbook, hoping that would jog his memory when he came back to it on his own time.

After donning his goggles, Heath laid out his heatproof mat and retrieved a dry spill from the sink area. He moved to the front of the room to light it from the professor’s burner. For a moment, he considered picking up the five spill samples while he was already here, but his memory issues made him decide against it. Knowing him, he’d probably get them mixed up and mislabel them or something! He carefully walked back to his station, cupping his hand around the flame to guard it from going out or catching anything on fire.

Once he lit his burner, it was back to the front to retrieve some samples. For this trip, Heath picked up two spills and dipped one in each of the first two compounds, holding one spill in each hand so as not to get them confused. He returned to his station and held the “A” spill in his left hand to the flame, watching intently as it changed from blue to… sort of blue-white. Okay, not much of a dramatic color change, but it was still fun to look at! He set the burned spill on the mat and glanced at the table in his book to see what metal that was. Lead, okay then. He repeated the process for the other spill in his right hand: the “B” spill turned the flame purple, just like in Professor Nien Nunb’s demonstration earlier or just like Mace Windu’s lightsaber. So that metal was… potassium.

Heath took a quick break to record his findings thus far before returning to the front one more time to collect the remaining three samples. He held the “C” sample out to the flame, watching as it turned white like Ahsoka Tano’s lightsabers. A quick glance at his book told him that metal was magnesium. After placing the spill on his mat, he repeated the steps for the “D” sample. That one glowed red like Darth Vader’s lightsaber or Kylo Ren’s or pretty much any Dark Side lightsaber, which meant the metal was… iron. Now there was only one sample left. Heath picked up the remaining spill and held it to the flame, watching as it turned green. He liked this compound because it produced a flame the same color as his favorite character’s (Luke Skywalker) lightsaber, but what metal was it? He consulted the book and learned it was copper. As he awaited further instructions, he added to his notes on the experiment.

Arts TRANSPONSTER!

As Catherine listened to professor Noble, she was half interested and half annoyed. She wanted to be learning to make a new potion and not be playing as if in a Muggle lab. It was a shame a school of witchcraft and wizardry was currently lacking magic. ironic too, if you asked her. And also very, very annoying.

There wasn't anything any of them could do at that moment, so she decided to suck it up and carry on with the learning. At least it was indeed interesting, even if only Muggle-interesting.

Setting up her workstation, Catherine eventually went up to light up her burner from the main flame in the room. As she had waited for several of her classmates to go up and collect everything they needed first, she noticed most of them were getting all of the spills at the same time, and she considered doing the same. That way she would guarantee she'd have enough for herself - they wouldn't be able to produce more magically, so she might as well make sure she had as many as she needed.

After she put her goggles on, the second year dipped the first damp spill into one of the metal compounds and went to hold it on the blue flame. As the flame turned green, she looked at her already opened book to check and see that the compound was copper.

Nodding, she carefully placed the spill on the heatproof mat before going to work with another damp spill. The Ravenclaw did the entire process four more times, making sure to dip the damp spills each in a different container so she would be able to see all of the five different flame colours. Admittedly, it was all very interesting. Still, not as interesting as working with magical potions. Hopefully they'd get to do that again sooner than later.
