Default Charms Lesson 1: Aparecium Charm

When you walk into the Charms classroom, the big bold words on the chalkboard will remind you of the reading you should have done before class: Aparecium Charm. It’s a chilly autumn day, so the windows in the classroom are shut to keep the cold and the rain out. And although it’s just afternoon, the sky outside the windows is darker than normal, and an odd shade of purple, so the lights inside the room are lit a bit brighter than normal to illuminate the class room.

Professor Fuller-Thompson stands at the front of the classroom in his usual position, leaning up against the edge of his desk, waiting for his students to arrive, making note of who was there on time, who was running late and who was flipping their textbook open at the last minute because they forgot to do the reading.

OOC: Welcome to Charms class! Just a reminder, this is the first OOC lesson, but this would not be the first charms lesson that your student would have attended.
Class Progression:
1. Greetings / Question 1
2. Replies / Question 2
3. Replies / Mini Activity
4. Main Activity

They were talking about sneaking? And the best charms that could be used? This was definitely a class in which she would be eagerly taking notes. Although, she did question the wisdom in covering this, but then again she highly doubted they would be taking the time to learn how to cast these charms.

Although she could still practice in her dorm.

She raised her hand and waited to be called on before offering her own answer. "There's the Homonculous charm that can be used for tracking. It's much easier to be sneaky if you know where everyone else is." Not that she had any idea how to actually cast that charm, but if anyone wanted to share she would be a very captive audience.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

SPOILER!!: Cole before the lesson began <3
Such was her distraction about the sky that Claudine failed to notice Cole slipping into the seat beside her. She quickly snapped her head in his direction and when she saw him, she was quite certain that her heart skipped several beats. Immediately her gaze went to Naya. Why wasn’t he sitting with her? The two Gryffindors were always together. “Hi,” Claudine greeted back softly then shook her head. “I haven’t got the faintest idea but um… it is a bit worrisome.’’ This was due to Hogwarts’ history of so much drama. Her Head of House didn’t seem concerned at all and she wondered why this was so.

Speaking of the man, he was getting the lesson started. The third year directed her attention to him as she tried to slow her heartbeats. Hopefully, this Gryffindor beside her wouldn’t prove to be distracting for she thought she had gotten over her crush for him; apparently this was not the case.

The discussion to start off the lesson interested her very much. Being sneaky. Claudine liked to be sneaky. Well, it was more of being invisible to everyone so that they’d leave her in peace. The first method that came to her mind was the use of the Invisibility Cloak but that method was already given. She hated to repeat answers so the girl remained silent to listen and to think of something not as yet mentioned.

Her hand went up after a while. “There are a series of Disguising Spells that allow someone to alter their appearance.’’ There was a questioning look for Fuller-Thompson. “I know those Spells are classified as Charms even though they sound as though they lean a lot more towards Transfiguration.” She had gotten that bit correct, yes?

Carsyn beamed at Naya when she sat down beside her. But nothing more was said because they were going to talk about being sneaky? Carsyn Rose knew plenty about the subject ... although sometimes she was better at the THEORY of it then the actual practical application about hiding things.

But first, what was up with the kids and giving the ideas about extra homework before a test and pop quizzes?? Did these kids actually LIKE work? Weird.

"The first rule of fight club is you do not talk about the fight club" Carsyn stated, quoting a classic old muggle movie. "This would be applicable to being sneaky. You can't talk about it." You never know who you could really trust, after all.... and well, Carsyn had a hard enough time keeping herself from trouble which meant telling others would only make it that much more difficult.

dream until your • dreams come true ~ Human pygmy puff

Class was officially in session and Naya sat up straighter, anxious to hear what they would be learning. Being sneaky. Now there was a topic she hadn’t seen coming. Quiet as it was kept, Naya knew a little something about being sneaky, muggle style. Magically, well that was another story.

The Gryffindor thought about the question that the professor posed. She thought about it a little too long because most of the good answers had already been given. More thinking. Finally Naya raised her hand. She had an answer, but wasn’t quite sure it was what the professor was looking for. “This isn’t a way to hide things, but it is a way to be sneaky......sort of. If you want to find out what someone is up to, you can use extendable ears. That way, you can listen to them secretly and find out everything you need to know.” And probably some things that you didn’t need to know.

The Aparecium Charm was definitely interesting. Ivy had done some of the reading but figured she'd learn way more and way faster in the actual lesson than she would trying to read ahead. So she was looking forward to this lesson!

Buuut the lessons usually started off a bit general, so they weren't at the main thing yet. This first topic of discussion was also interesting though, so she didn't mind.

She raised her hand to offer an answer of her own. "It's not super magical, but people sometimes use codes to hide things. Y'know, you make up different sayings and words and stuff that only you know what they mean. And maybe people you trust know too, if you're sharing it with them. So then, if you write something down that you want to keep secret, even if someone gets around your spells that're supposed to conceal it, it just sounds like a bunch of nonsense, and your secret's safe because they don't understand what it says."

Tom raised his hand after spending a few minutes thinking about the question. "Well when I don't want anyone to read my diary, I hide it under my bed in a locked box, that only I know the combination too." Yeah and no one was going to get it out of him.

*sappysapper* MAJNOO, YO!

What a clever way to make students spill their shady ways.

Missa definitely felt amused, especially with all the answers everyone started giving too.

When her turn came, she honestly felt .....uninspired, for lack of a better word. "You can use transfiguration spells? transfigure yourself into objects to hide in plain sight"

Trinetta liked to THINK she knew about being sneaky. Although, like most things in her life, her perception of her behavior vs. how it actually was was likely a bit skewed. Still, she knew a thing or two about hiding stuff - and not just in the physical sense.

She raised her hand. "Well, you can hide things by simply not disclosing them. Like secrets," Nettie pointed out. And Merlin, did she have experience with secret feelings - in many different ways. "You could hide secrets and information from people by simply refusing to talk or share them with others."

Oh, SECRETS? Phoebe was a huge fan of secrets, especially the ones that only she knew. And that she got to tell people in her own SWEET TIME. Phoebe grinned hugely at the professor and waved her hand around in the air. Her classmates were sharing good ideas, and she was eager to write them all down. Use them for evil. Not for good.

"They have untraceable charms, sir. Like you just cast a charm and then no one can find the place anymore. Boom, like it's invisible but it's still totally there."

Sneaking? Was this school trying to corrupt him more? It started off with friends plotting to sneak into the tower of London, then he'd met Kimmie and Minjae.... Merlin... Sneaking around? Sounded like a concoction for detention.. Noah paused. However, it could be used to his advantage. Yes, yes it could. The boy stayed silent, listening to the answers. Very interesting. He was getting some good ideas from the group about how to be more... sneaky.

Noah raised his hand."The Quietening Charm would reduce any sound that you may make while you are sneaking around..." So if you need to tip toe but almost silently perhaps use this spell?

Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll

Heath had just finished laying out his supplies when he heard someone say his name. Well, that was unexpected! It wasn't often that people wanted to talk to him before classes… not that he minded, not at all. His dark head turned in the direction of the voice, and he smiled at Islay. "Hi," he replied. Before he had time to say anything else, class was starting.

Heath turned his attention to the front as Fuller-Thompson started speaking. The Head of Slytherin was talking about being sneaky. That was… mildly amusing. As soon as he heard the question, Heath immediately thought of acting. The very nature of acting was hiding one's self by taking on the personality and mannerisms of another, which in certain contexts could be sneaky. Was that too much of a stretch? The professor did say to think outside, but he also said to think magic.

Unfortunately, every magical method of hiding things that Heath could think of had already been said (or at least every method that involved spells, anyway), except… An idea came to him. He raised his hand and said, "You can hide entire locations by making them Unplottable."

Hogwarts up to its usual shenanigans?!

"That bad, huh?" she asked, because anybody who knew anything about Hogwarts knew that around this time each and every year, some kind of shenanigans usually showed up. She peered out the window again. Was somebody going to do something about this? Because purple wasn't a usual shade of the sky...

She tore her eyes away from the sky and focused on the question. Ohh, sneakiness?! What was he trying to do, learn everybody's secrets or something? What a Slytherin, that Fuller-Thompson! By asking his question, he was actually learning each and every sneaky little idea in this classroom! I mean, he was pretty a master at this, wasn't he?!

Anyway, before she got completely distracted and couldn't come up with anything at all, she raised her hand. "Well, right here in the castle, we have the Room of Requirement. It has a hidden entrance, and it stays pretty much hidden itself until somebody has a true need for it," she recalled. "It's even unplottable on maps like the Marauder's Map."

Sure, Morgan knew lots of ways to be sneaky and hide things. Didn't all teenagers? Buuut... was it legal for a teacher to ask kids that?? He was pretty sure this sounded like entrapment and he was reluctant to give away too much or willingly get himself into trouble.

He listened to the answers of his peers and actually jotted down some notes. Morgan wasn't always a big note-taker, but these were some good ideas and he found some of them interesting and stuff he might not have thought of. And see, Professor? He was being a star student taking all these notes!

He raised his hand. "I'm pretty sure there are some secret passages here. Super secret ways of getting around." Just enough information and truthfully he didn't have any more info on that. But maybe the professor did and he'd clue him in a little more.

Why was he looking at her like that!? Could he stop?? It was very unnerving! She hadn’t even done anything wrong yet! (Not that she would, Nina was a STAR pupil). (Always). (Even though she did not speak to Professor Fuller-Thompson, like, ever).

Nina waited patiently for class to begin. In the meantime, she took to organizing the things on her desk. She always had two quills set out, just in case. Two different pots of ink, so that she could color-code her notes in real time. Extra parchment was a must, though she only planned on using her notebook. Despite her usual arrangement, she still played around with putting quills on the right side of her desk, even though she ultimately settled for a left-hand side placement. These details were very important.

When Professor Fuller-Thompson began to address the class, she looked up. She was always slightly weary when it came to charms lessons. Last term he had made them stand under buckets of water. Then there was that time where they had to clean plates and someone WHACKED her in the back of her head with one. Fuller-Thompson always had something unenjoyable up his sleeve. Nina was on high alert, always.

So his first question was met with some suspicion, naturally. It didn’t innately sound like something that would lead to a horrible activity that she would absolutely hate. That much was promising. Of course Nina knew plenty about sneaking around. Disillusionment charms were helpful in that sense. As were charms to help quiet noise. She used those plenty when it came to spending alone time with Calyx. Not that this was something she would EVER share with her classmates (let alone Fuller-Thompson!!!). Matters regarding her relationship were private!

Anyway, knowing how to sneak around the castle with her boyfriend was vital. So she knew her stuff. Instead of raising her hand to share, however, she just jotted a few things down in her notebook. But Fuller-Thompson likely knew to expect this from her.
Yes, yes he did expect this from her. He knew that she had her ways though. All Slytherins had their sneaky ways and she was just opting not to share them with him. He could understand why, though. Fair enough.

Okaaay, being sneaky...hmmm that was an interesting topic indeed. Raising her hand the brunette offered her simplest of answers, “humans for generations have used different inks in writing as a means to hide what they are saying – be it lemon or with magical alternatives like concealing charms.” see, simple answer.

She was just going to try and work as hard as she could today and maybe, just maybe, she could learn something sneaky herself. Who knew when all this could come in handy. Right?
Piers gestured to Islay when she raised her hand, listening to her answer and nodding in agreement. ”This is true, yes. Good job.” One didn’t have to have invisible ink to be sneaky in writing.

Ah, and there was the boy that came from Beauxbaton. You know, being sneaky wasn’t for everyone, but it was much easier when you had magic. ”Yes, very good. The muggle repelling charm is quite, quite important.” Statute of Secrecy and whatnot.

"Well, as wizards we often put charms on ordinary objects to they look like a standard bag on the outside, but inside is an entire room to store things." There .. that was a magical answer, and though not totally sneaky, it was kind of.
Maybe it was his way of finding out all their secrets... but like he mentioned, he probably knew all of them. He’d been at this castle way longer than all of them anyway. ”Yes, quite right. Transfiguration spells can be used that way, charms as well.”

His first question was all about hiding stuff. OOooooOOOOOOOoooooHHHhhhh! what kind of stuff are they hiding? Because if it is something like a family heirloom, Gringotts offers a space for that. Is that considered like a hiding place to hide things we don't want people to get their hands on? Another thing comes to her mind too. It wasn't a spell but it is magic- he didn't exactly specify on anything. She raised her arm to give her answer "an invisibility cloak, professor?". If the topic is about being sneaky or hiding something, cover it with an invisibility cloak.

Yes, good, his prefect and Head Girl had an answer. Piers called on her and nodded at her answer. ”Yes,” he replied with a nod. ”Rather hard to come by, but right nonetheless.” He had often wished he had owned an invisibility cloak.

Like, say, in a broom closet or under your bed or behind a tapestry on the fourth floor. Just a few hypothetical ideas there.
Ah, Bernadette. She should have a good answer - well... perhaps not. Her little trip into the forbidden forest didn’t end up being so sneaky, after all.

He worried about her answer for a moment, but when she finished her thought he couldn’t disagree. ”Yeah, that’s true.” ’Like hiding puppies on a train,’ he thought to himself, opting to keep that to himself. ”Can’t keep a secret if you... well, can’t keep a secret.”

There was a deep-seated fear of SOMETHING inside of Aboli, and it wouldn't dwell to get into that here.

So, Aboli merely smiled as Babs and Noah entered...and many people seemed to NOT WANT A POP QUIZ which only showed their weaknesses. Either fear of failure OR their failure to do what was asked of them - either way, Aboli felt superior, and that was very dangerous in the fifteen year old Aboli Song.

"Being sneaky is something we magic folk are good at. We have to be...in order to avoid detection from muggles. Isn't Hogwarts charmed so Muggles can't find it? Even if they go LOOKING for it?" Not that they would because they don't even KNOW about Hogwarts. Aboli pulled out her notebook to begin taking notes, though. Everyone was making great points...probably until Kitt opened his mouth again. He managed to say the dumbest stuff in class. Aboli almost felt sorry for him.
Piers gestured to Aboli, the girl who suggested a pop quiz, hoping she wouldn’t ask for extra homework. ”Yes, you’re quite right. The muggle repelling charm is quite good at its job.” Saved them magic folk from a lot of trouble.

"There's the Disillusionment Charm" he said after raising his hand in the air. "It works like you're camouflaging yourself with your surroundings rather than becoming invisible" and now that he said this, the Hufflepuff wondered why he had never bothered to learn this charm. It was PERFECT for trying to sneak around! He lowered his arm and made a mental note to find out how to perform this charm.
Piers pointed to Minjae next when he raised his hand, nodding at his suggestion. ”Yes, another good charm. Very useful when you’re trying to hide something - or yourself.” It was quite fun to practice, too.

"You can either erase a person's memory completely or add fake memories without the person knowing."
Ah, he wondered if someone would mention those spells. ”You’re right, they’re very sneaky. Also very, very complicated, very tricky and hard to master and can be very damaging if done wrong.” So, in other words, don’t go trying it.

"Professor, if you want to be sneaky you have to tiptoe. That makes it so people can't hear your footsteps."
Well, to be honest, he expected a bit more elaborate of an answer from a Ravenclaw, but... he wasn’t wrong. ”Very true,” he said simply before moving onto the next answer.

Instead, Nem let the chair fall forwards again, so that the front legs slammed back onto the floor. "Sir, yes, sir."

Looking between Lazarus and Fuller-Thompson, Nem waited for the Head of House to move onto greeting more students before speaking quietly to the Gryffindor. "Hard to tell, if we're basing it on that logic. Old F.T.'s not really the panicking sort, nor's the Headsman. They might all just be acting normal 'cause they know there's nothing they can do, so as to not upset the little kids or whatever. Or they're just all in denial. Or they haven't figured it out yet." Nem had not read some entirely made up theories, and didn't mind sharing more with Lazarus if he was curious.

Not now though, because class was starting, and Nem would never want to disrupt a lesson.

What a topic. The obvious theme of the lesson - invisible inks and the Aparecium Charm - had already been touched upon, and Grantham had mentioned the only thing Nem would have been willing to say (which was, ironically, the concept of not saying anything), so... nah. Sitting out this one. Not claiming ignorance on the topic or anything - as everyone and their brother knew how to be sneaky, even if they were awful at it - just opting out of answering. Having weighed up the risk of seeming suspicious by saying nothing, against sharing something that could potentially tip off student or staff, Nem had decided that silence had fewer drawbacks.
Well, at least Nem was a good listener.

Now for an actual answer. ”Someone could use the fidelius charm. It’s difficult and complex to use but it could be used to conceal a secret inside an someone’s soul”. Would this be classed as sneaky? Possibly. It would really depend on the secret you were hiding.
”Ha,” Piers said dryly in response to the boy’s homework remark. His actual answer, was... intense, but again, not wrong. It was for secret-keepers after all, and that was the epitome of sneaky. ”Err, yes, difficult and not recommended, but indeed sneaky.” Piers did not recommend spells that tied to ones soul, ya know?

Although she could still practice in her dorm.

She raised her hand and waited to be called on before offering her own answer. "There's the Homonculous charm that can be used for tracking. It's much easier to be sneaky if you know where everyone else is." Not that she had any idea how to actually cast that charm, but if anyone wanted to share she would be a very captive audience.
Ah, now there was one that they hadn’t heard yet. ”Ah, very good, Amstern. You’re quite right.” A good old classic tracking spell.

”Yes, Claudine,” Piers said, calling on the young girl to share her answer. Spells that could alter one’s appearance. ”Yes, you’re right. Though there are some charms and some transfiguration spells that would fall under that category. It really just depends on the spell and the foundation of it.” And Piers could go on a two hour lecture about charms theory, but he’d spare them. If she wanted to know more, she knew she was welcome in his office.

You can't talk about it." You never know who you could really trust, after all.... and well, Carsyn had a hard enough time keeping herself from trouble which meant telling others would only make it that much more difficult.
.... Fight club?

It sounded familiar, but Piers had never been much into muggle films, so he just sort of... tried to apply the sentence to the lesson as best he could. ”Yes. Definitely.” Sure. ”Just like the statue of secrecy.” Right? First rule of wizard club is don’t talk about wizards... right?

The Gryffindor thought about the question that the professor posed. She thought about it a little too long because most of the good answers had already been given. More thinking. Finally Naya raised her hand. She had an answer, but wasn’t quite sure it was what the professor was looking for. “This isn’t a way to hide things, but it is a way to be sneaky......sort of. If you want to find out what someone is up to, you can use extendable ears. That way, you can listen to them secretly and find out everything you need to know.” And probably some things that you didn’t need to know.
At this point, the class was surely running out of answers, so he didn’t mind that the answers stretched a bit to things like this. ”Yes, this is a great way to find out when people are being sneaky around you.” And the charm they were learning that day was going to be of a similar kind.

”Ah, secret codes, yes.” Piers nodded, impressed by the answer. Was she a Ravenclaw? ”Significantly more time consuming, but very effective.” That was, as long as the code was hard to decipher.

"You could hide secrets and information from people by simply refusing to talk or share them with others."
Well, it was a very basic answer, but no one had really mentioned it yet. ”Yes, that’s quite a fundamental part of being secretive isn’t it? Keeping your mouth shut?” A lot of people had a problem with that.

He had asked to think outside of the box and this was an open discussion after all, so he didn’t mind the answer one bit. ”Yes, you’re right. Again, a very extensive, complicated and tricky combination of spells, but definitely sneaky.” And he was glad somebody brought it up.

He didn’t have a reply for her comment. He was sure Hogwarts was FIIIIIIIIINE.

Ahhhh, yes, the good old Room of Requirement. Now he KNEW that at LEAST 25% of the students in that classroom had gone off to find that room to go snog somebody, so it was about time that somebody mentioned it. ”You’re right, Isla, Hogwarts’ very own sneaky room.”

”Ah, secret passages,” Piers said with another nod, pleased by the answers that touched on the History of Hogwarts. ”Passages that have been closed up, of course.” OR HAD THEY?

Once Piers was satisfied with the amount of answers he received and he felt like enough people were getting into the discussion, he decided it was time to move on. ”Thank you all for your input. As we can see, there are lots of ways to be sneaky. But just remember... We, as professors, have the most experience of all being sneaky, so however sneaky you think you’re being... we probably know.” Just saying.

Anyway.

”Alright, like I mentioned before, I do hope you did your reading. We’re going to focus on the Aparecium charm today - also known as the invisible ink revealing charm. So, based off of the chapter that you read, let’s discuss what we know about the charm and its counterpart - the invisible ink itself. Let’s talk about history, factors, uses, ethics - whatever you read about it that stuck out to you.” And he wanted to hear from EVERYONE. Not everyone may have done the reading, but he knew everyone was at least somewhat familiar with the spell.

OOC: Thanks for your participation! Again, class will move on in about 24 hours.

Professors were the most experienced at being sneaky? Hmmmmm... Bernie eyed the professor for that one. On the one hand, he, as Groundskeeper-Professor, could probably go into the forest-which-shall-not-be-named all on his own. And he was also Curtis' dad, and Curtis seemed fairly sneaky, even though he didn't know how to make kneazles disappear. SO MAYBE Bernie would just believe the professorkeeper for once? Hmmm?

And mooooooooving on. Now was the reading-check question, and Bernie had already underlined what she knew she wanted to recite recall from the reading. "The Aaparecium charm is also called the revealing charm. To use it, you like, tap on stuff and the stuff will ~reveal~ its hidden contents." So, off to a great start. "You wanna know what I think about the aparecium charm, Professor?" 'Course he did. "I think a variation of this charm is what the Maurauders used to make their infamous map."

A map Bernie had been trying to recreate ever since, with little to no success. This was her theory though, and also, she was only a third year, and she was not part of a quartet of cool kids anymore, so. She couldn't be faulted for not having figured it out yet.

Naya found her classmates ideas about being sneaky very interesting. Clearly some of them had first hand experience. Just saying. When the topic of the day’s lesson was revealed, she was not surprised. The Aparecium Charm was what they would learn and the first question was already on the table. Bernie had already addressed the charm, so Naya decided to tackle the other side of the coin.

The sixth year raised her hand and when it was her turn, she began to speak. “Invisible ink disappears when it dries. That way the information that has been written cannot be seen by anyone who isn’t meant to see it. Of course if you use the Aparecium Charm, the ink should reappear and the message should reveal itself.” Annnnd Naya couldn’t just leave it at that. She had to add a fun fact. At least she thought it was fact. ”Hermione Granger thought that Tom Riddle’s diary might have been written in invisible ink.”

Islay had of course, given Heath a kind smile in return before class began. Well, that was a nice little idea there Mr. Jones, she grinned jotted down notes on what everyone was saying as well as Professor Fuller-Thompsons reactions...so, it seemed like Drew’s response which was so like hers hadn’t garnered as fond of response – that was interesting to her. She did, of course write down little marks next to the ones she was curious of.

The passages were quite intriguing indeed.

Oooooh, the Professors were sneaky? She tipped her head at him as he said this. She had to wonder if they were sneaky because they had been students themselves? Probably, didn’t mean that they did know.

Glancing toward Bernadette Islay just nodded, that seemed plausible. Now, raising her hand she waited to be called again, “Aparecium has been in use for centuries – as it was known to be used by Arithmancer Bridget Wenlock, who apparently had accidentally sent her cousin a cake recipe instead of the set of calculations she had meant to send,” see wasn’t it interesting.

‘We probably know’…. Nina eyed Fuller-Thompson for a moment. Did he really know? Because she was almost entirely certain the question (though surely relevant to their topic for today) was meant to help him get the lowdown on how students snuck around the castle. She saw you, sir. She saw you. There wasn’t much time to linger on this thought, however, as they were quickly moving on. Nina had of course done the reading, unlike some others who she had noticed cramming in the corridor just before class. Honestly.

As for the next question, Nina thought it to be an interesting one. Far more interesting than the first, anyway. She jotted a few things downing her notes, before looking up when Bernadette spoke. The Marauder’s Map was an interesting case. It was a surprisingly intelligent theory, that there would be a variation of the aparecium charm used to create it. The ethical dilemma there, however, had far more to do with the use of the homonculous charm in Nina’s opinion. Tracking people without their knoweldge is not only a total invasion of privacy, but it’s also SO creepy! Especially seeing as the map was in the hands of a bunch of hormone ridden Gryffindor boys.

Ethics was something she was quite conscious of, especially because she thought some of her classmates to have no regard for them whatsoever. She saw it plenty firsthand. There were also other reminders of this, such as an old Hogwarts tradition she had heard about in passing. Some sort of gossip magazine that went by the name of The Aparecium? Just because it was done with invisible ink (which is something she could only assume by the name itself) did not make it okay. A gossip magazine was not at all ethical. Rumors were rarely ever true and no one had the right to share information about someone else like that even if the rumors were true! @EloiseFairfield.

”Glad you liked my joke Professor”, a small smile on the prefects lips now. See, he knew he was right and the Professors “Ha” had all but confirmed it.

The prefect just listened for a moment listened as Bernadette speculated about a famous map. Huh, guess she wasn’t as witless as she seemed from previous lessons. Cough Defence against the Dark Arts Cough. The there was Neya who was discussing well known facts about the old Minister of Magic, Hermione Granger and again, relevant. Islay’s comment about Bridget Wenlock though, though made the prefect smile a little.

”Invisible in actually transfigures anything written in to become invisible and generally, Aparecium does reveal it but not always. He had read about a few cases where the ink didn’t work but generally, those had only happened when a dark witch or wizard was involved. Something that was best saved for the lessons with just the NEWT students.

She nodded at the professor, agreeing that getting an invisibility cloak is a hard thing to do. She wishes she had one as well. One that she can use. She wonders what she will do if she does get a hold of it. Hmmm... probably something boring- she tends to be that sometimes.

we probably know, they probably do. Oh poor, Curtis.

That's not the topic though, the topic is about invisible ink revealing charm something that from the looks of it most of her classmates have read. "Aparecium... comes from the Latin word appareo meaning to become visible or to appear" she spoke up after raising her hand "people use to hide secrets or hidden messages" like the Marauder's map, Bridget Wenlock and the diary of Tom Riddle as some of them cited as an example. "I've also read somewhere that it can be somewhat blocked by the effects of the Horcrux-making spell."

Other than that, most of her answers were already called out.

The facts about the charm they were studying today were mentioned by other students, but she wanted to talk about the ethics. After organising her thoughts, she raised her hand.

“It may be immoral to use the Aparecium Charm to just reveal any and all secret messages. The people who wrote the messages want their privacy too,” she said. If she wrote a secret note in invisible ink and it got discovered by others, she would feel embarrassed and miserable. On the other hand, if the charm was used to find messages left by dark wizards or criminals, then perhaps that was fair. Where do you draw the line? Ethics is a difficult issue.

Puff by day, snake by night | Mj's bestie | Always UP to Something...

The sneaky thing was interesting and she did eye her little brother on his answer. Everyone knew about the passages, but what was he using them for was her question. She didn't stay long on that thought and figured as long as he was being safe and not getting caught he was fine.

Moving into the lesson and the reading she did not do, Chloe took her quill to begin writing down whatever notes she needed. Did she know about the charm, of course she did, but was she knowledgeable enough to answer? Listening to everyone else give the basics she decided that she was not on top of the knowledgeable enough scale, though she did know a few facts about the revealing charm from her readings in past years. She was preparing for NEWTS after all, well she needed to start preparing for NEWTS.

Speaking of Aparecium, she wondered if the latest gossip paper had come out yet. She hadn't seen it, but that sneaky paper always had a way of coming when they needed distractions and it was always interesting to see who was in there. Not that she would ever admit she liked something like that and she didn't believe most of it. It was just entertaining at most.

Professors had the most experience being sneaky? Avalon highly doubted that. Maybe they had the most experience detecting sneakiness, but she knew plenty of students who were probably just as smart and sneaky. Looking at you, Slytherins.

In her opinion, invisible ink wasn't really the sneakiest thing you could use, since it could so easily be revealed be the Aparecium charm. If she really wanted to be sneaky, she would want to use a charm that couldn't be easily reversed. "The Aparecium charm is an alternative to using a revealer." As far as she knew, a revealer also uncovered invisible ink. "I think they both do the same thing. I don't have one with me, but it looks kind of like a Muggle eraser, and when you use it, it can reveal hidden writings." She'd prefer to use the charm though, because it didn't require any extra supplies. Who just happened to carry a revealer around in their pocket?

As much as her head of house said professors were sneaky AND knew everything they got up, Aboli just didn't believe it. It was practically impossible! Students would be in WAY more trouble if professors knew eeeeeverything. Oh Aboli you don't even know.

It was the part of the lesson where Aboli's hand was almost a blur from scribbling down notes so fast. She had done the reading so she ACTUALLY knew stuff, but it seemed everyone else had the boring information covered. Also, did someone mention horcruxes? Jillian? It made Aboli wrinkle her nose. Ghastly subject to bring up in class, eh?

She raised her hand. "Professor, why would anyone even think the spell is unethical? I don't really understand. Hiding things isn't unethical in itself, I don't think," she said as she continued writing notes. It was a neutral action, so to speak.

All of these rather elaborate answers. Blake had done the reading ... or at least some of the reading. But he wasn't sure he had any really good answers to give. "I think you tap the paper/book/object 3 times for the wand movement." Blake at least remembered that part, but he wasn't sure he remembered it right.
