Charms Lesson 1: Aparecium Charm

When you walk into the Charms classroom, the big bold words on the chalkboard will remind you of the reading you should have done before class: Aparecium Charm. It’s a chilly autumn day, so the windows in the classroom are shut to keep the cold and the rain out. And although it’s just afternoon, the sky outside the windows is darker than normal, and an odd shade of purple, so the lights inside the room are lit a bit brighter than normal to illuminate the class room.

Professor Fuller-Thompson stands at the front of the classroom in his usual position, leaning up against the edge of his desk, waiting for his students to arrive, making note of who was there on time, who was running late and who was flipping their textbook open at the last minute because they forgot to do the reading.

OOC: Welcome to Charms class! Just a reminder, this is the first OOC lesson, but this would not be the first charms lesson that your student would have attended.

With the sky being what it was lately, Carsyn was partially grateful to not being playing for the Gryffindor Quidditch team. Of course she knew the weather-repelling charms by heart, but that didn't mean anyone really WANTED to play quidditch under crazy conditions. Especially as a seeker.

She was on time to charms, which wasn't surprising given she wanted to do something with advanced charms and potions after Hogwarts, but had she done her reading? That was a question to be confirmed at a later time. Which in case you're curious, not beyond reading what spell it was because aparecium was obviously related to apparition which was something any teenager couldn't wait to achieve.

"Good afternoon Professor, terribly weather eh?" she said, before finding a seat.

BanaBatGirl 05-15-2020 10:40 PM

Hmmmmmmmm yeah, Bernie TOTALLY did the reading before class. She actually liked Charms, it wasn't a bad class even if she never fully paid attention in it, but um... after History of Magic, she'd gotten sucked into those Newt Scamander books she'd bought over the summer, and now she was forgetting to do her pre-lesson readings.

Ah, whatever. She had like ten minutes before class properly started, so she was going to read it now. "Hiya, Professor sir," she greeted the Groundskee--- er, professor, plopping her stuff down near the windows and cracking open her book. "I'm just refreshing my mind," she added as a just-in-case, and started skimming the reading.

Aparecium Charm! Yup, Isla had done the reading on that one! Well, kind of. She had gotten super distracted a time or two, but she thought she had the basics down. She ventured further into the classroom, spotting her Head of House leaned against his desk and waiting for everybody to arrive. "Hello, Professor!" the second year greeted. As she passed him by, her gaze traveled to the window, and she noted that same purple tint to the sky. "So what's up with the sky, Sir? Never heard of purple being a usual shade."

Isla followed Bernie to the seats near the window and took a seat herself. While her third year friend was interested in whatever the textbook had to say, Isla was curious about the sky. She still bet that there some kind of poisonous vapor up there somewhere...

Reading for lessons took away a lot of Claudine’s sketching time, as well as time she could have used to continue being a caretaker to kneazle President but she did it still. There was motivation when she liked the subject. As she headed to the Charms classroom, her attention was solely on the windows for the purple sky bothered her. There was a frown on her face by the time she was in the room. “Hi, professor,’’ she said quietly. “Doesn’t the colour of the sky worry you?’’ Claudine’s frown deepened because she couldn’t help wondering if this was the sign of something ominous to come. And knowing Hogwarts' track records with such events…

The Snakette trailed off to take a seat at the usual spot at the back of the class. Hopefully no one would choose to sit beside her.

Time fooooor Charms! Aboli was nearly late because she had been in the owlery again, trying to make friends with some of the feathery fellows. She found if she made friends, they delivered her owls more quickly. Cutieeeees! She bounded into Charms cheerfully, despite NEARLY forgetting about it.

And yes, she had done the reading, so she would KNOW stuff for this class hopefully.

"Gooooood day to you, Professor Fuller-Thompson!" she said in an singsong way. "You should give us a quiz on the reading. See who read and who didn't." She smirked juuuuuust a tiny bit. It would make her grade good, see. Well, better than it was, which was good, so it'd be BETTER. And who cared if others failed? They should do their homework.

Just a few mentions

Reading before class? Tick that one off the list of things he’s already done. Easy. Did the Professor even need to remind him? Uh, no. Not at all.

Entering the classroom, Ewan couldn’t help but pull his robes a little closer, the chilly autumn air cutting a little too deep this afternoon. Between the weather and the skies which seemed to be getting darker quicker, the prefect was starting to feel the need to carry around a little jar of blue flames. Although, he did know there were some who might not be too happy with this so instead, he simply had several lays of clothes on underneath his robes. ”Good afternoon Professor. How was your morning?” a friendly smile on his face as he walked past her desk at the front of the classroom towards the rest of the children who were already sitting at a desk.

Sitting down at a random desk, the prefect pulled it out of his backpack and places it in front of him without opening it as though to deliberately trying to prove a point that he had in fact already read what she had asked them to. Briefly, he cast a glance over at the ever eager Aboli and just gave her a look because there was proving a point and then there was asking for a quiz. Uh, no thank you. As for the purple sky, Ewan wasn’t as concerned with it as some of the others seemed to be (Isla, Carsyn and Claudine) but his eyes did seem to find their way to the windows, settling on the windows and the rain that was hitting them.

It was a rather nasty day and Naya was glad she didn’t have to be outside. She didn’t like the way the sky looked. It was kind of creepy. It made her feel like something weird was going to happen. Of course this was Hogwarts, so weird was the norm.

Naya entered the classroom just in time to hear one of her classmates suggest a reading quiz. Seriously? Who does that? “Hello Professor”, she said, silently hoping that he didn’t take on the suggestion. She had done her reading, but still........ Spotting her dorm mate, Naya sat down next to her. “Hey Carsyn, she said cheerfully. Then she proceeded to get her supplies out for class. She’d be ready when it was time to begin.

Babs wore her warmest hoodies under her robes for extra warmth. She hadn't been feeling too great lately and it must've been from the weather changing. Sniffling a bit, she gave the professor a small nod. "Good afternoon, Professor,"

And yes, she had noticed how dark the sky was. But Babs figured it was just setting soon than usual due to the earth's rotation and seasons changing. Nothing eerie about nature.

But then she had noticed Aboli there, mentioning something about an exam.

"Oi. Oi. Oi. Class hasn't even started and you're already mentioning he should give us an exam?" She made a face at the girl and shook her head. Did she even do the reading? Probably not. Babs had read most of it, due to falling asleep in the common room after a whole day of potion making and studying.

Even the lingering purple sky and continued potential to convince kids that the world was ending had done little to stave off the boredom for longer than, say, half an hour at most. It seemed that, far from what Nem had initially theorised, the older they got, the more suffocating this state of ennui would become. They didn't know how anyone could stand it.

They were having a particularly troublesome time with it today, but met Fuller-Thompson with a nod as they strolled into the classroom, hands in pockets. "Afternoon, Professor. Shame about that whole impending apocalypse thing, huh?" Joking? Not joking? It was even harder to tell when they weren't doing that whole cheerful bit. "Least we're all in it together."

Crossing the room, Nem took up a seat by the window, slung their bag under the desk, and immediately rocked back on two chair legs, looking out at the doomsday sky.

A quiz on the reading? Was that one Slytherin chick serious? Cora shot her a warning glance on the way past. A look that clearly stated she had no problems roughing her up a little in an empty corridor after class if she mentioned the Q word again. As usual, she chose a spot at the very back of the classroom where hopefully Professor Fuller-Thompson wouldn't see what she was up to.

And what did Cora Dredworth plan on getting up to?

Nothing.

Absolutely nothing.

Or actually, perhaps a nap.

Cassirin 05-16-2020 12:58 AM

If Professor Cheekbones thought that Phoebe would dare show up for his class without doing the reading first... well, he was probably right. She did her homework like a good little Gryffindor, but there was no way she'd read ahead unless there was threat of fire or personal damage. And the professors weren't allowed to damage them. Not physically, at least, but emotionally...

"Hullo, Professor. Did you order up this weather special for us? Some sort of dark and dangerous theme?" More emotional damage.

Alexandre wasn't a big fan of rain, and he was a bit tired of it. It made going outside rather unpleasant, see? Well, that wasn't always true. It could be fun if you went out in a raincoat wanting to play in the rain on purpose. But when it wasn't on purpose it just meant everything was wet and cold and decidedly not fun. But the Charms classroom was looking rather bright and Alexandre appreciated that.

"Hello Professor." He gave the man a greeting and a smile before going to find a seat. Alexandre actually had done the pre-class reading, which was somewhat surprising. But Noah had made him. Convinced him it was a good idea so he wouldn't actually fail the class.

emjay 05-16-2020 01:57 AM

"Hey, Professor!" Morgan gave the man an enthusiastic greeting as he sauntered in through the door. Wow, was it bright in here! "Shoulda brought my shades," he announced to no one in particular. Who knew he'd need them when it looked like it was going to storm outside at any minute.

Oh, shoot. He was supposed to read something before class, wasn't he? The words on the board reminded him, but one, he wasn't much of a reader, and two, he was a little forgetful, so that didn't exactly happen. But he was sure he could get by alright, and he was here early enough that he could skim the chapter, right?

Morgan took a seat near a window and pulled out his materials for class. Look at how prepared he was! But, yes, just a little pre-class skimming for good measure, even if he was tempted to stare out the window at the purpley storm sky.

Watson 05-16-2020 01:59 AM

Noah walked into the classroom. Good! He was still early. He had thought he had come close to not making it as he had gotten stuck catching up with a good friend. However, he was now here and ready to learn. "Hello Professor! Weird weather we're having..." he greeted him before taking the open seat next to Aboli. "Aboli. How's your day?"

Settling in, he readied his notebook and glanced up at the chalkboard. The Aparecium Charm? Hmm..

DaniDiNardo 05-16-2020 02:24 AM

"I vote we not listen to Aboli." Kitt chimed in, entering the class just in time to hear her suggestion. He was sure others would agree and if they didn't, he voted they not listen to them either.

The Gryffindor moved to take the spot by Nem, curious about the end of the world statement in light of the sky that kept doing its own thing. No sooner than he'd sat, his hand was up. "The world isn't really ending, is it Professor?" Because if it was, everyone was being super casual and there hadn't been any news and he wanted to know who'd save his parents if he was HERE.

"And if it does end, will the elves make us a good pot of end of the world stew--tarts...tarts too...and and and those stuffed potatoes with the creamy cheese fillin'?"

What? Everyone had an end of the world food menu. This was normal.

Reading for class was easy when it was for one of her favorite subjects, like Charms or Transfiguration. Herbology, on the other hand? Not so much. So naturally, Avalon had thoroughly scanned the chapter on revealing charms before class. She made her way into the classroom, grateful for the bright lights to make the day a little cheerier. The weather had been absolutely dreadful lately.

"Hi, Professor," Avalon said with a smile as she slid into a seat by the window. Most of her classmates were making comments about the sky. Honestly, she couldn't blame them. It was so gloomy lately, and the odd colors were becoming a daily occurrence at Hogwarts. Avalon kept wanting to blame it on the changing seasons, but a nagging feeling told her that there may be something weirder going on. Nevertheless, she took out her materials for class and propped her chin on her hand, staring out at the purple sky as she waited for class to begin.

Chelliephone 05-16-2020 03:04 AM

K followed along after the rest of the student, filing into class and giving a nod at the Professor with a quick, "Hello, Professor" and a smile in his direction. Charms was not one of her favorite subjects, but Professor Fuller-Thompson was one of the better looking Professor's so at least there was something to look forward to. The Hufflepuff adjusted her bag before moving through the desks to locate a spot to sit.

She found one fairly quickly and sat down, pulling out her wand and her quills and parchment for note taking if needed. She had her book with her as well, but she waited for the Professor to start the lesson before pulling it out to follow along. Had she done the reading? Of course not, but she had at least down a quick scan to at least get herself acquainted with roughly what the Charm was supposed to do. She was just going to hope that was enough to get her through.

Glancing around the room, she gave a quick nod and a small towards all the familiar faces, before settling into her seat and facing forward once again.

ArianaBlack 05-16-2020 04:42 AM

Nina had obviously done the reading. She was weeks ahead, actually. NEWTs would not deter her from her regular studies because she had created a timetable for herself. One that involved preparation that dated as far back as fifth year. If she wanted to get into her top choice university, it was absolutely necessary that she did everything as perfectly possible. Obviously.

Besides, she studying beforehand was the only way to make sure she could have an enjoyable final year. Nina did not plan on letting the miserable weather mess with what was supposed to be her best term yet. Graduating wasn't a big deal. She wasn't scared. Or terrified. Or hating thinking about it. Everything was fINE. She was FINE. The weather was FINE.

The lesson today would be FINE.

She slipped into the classroom very quietly and gave Professor Fuller-Thompson a polite smile. Not because she liked him, but because she was polite and showing respect to her professors was something she would do regardless of her opinions about them. And with that, she moved to find a seat in the middle of the room. Far away from the slackers in the back, like Cora Dredworth, and far enough from the front where the nerds sat. Middle. Just right.

SilverTiger 05-16-2020 06:38 AM

The concept of not having done the reading was one that generally did not cross Carys’ mind, strange weather or not. Nor was she about to let her prefect duties keep her from assignments. If she’d managed to juggle prefect duties with OWL studying last term, she knew this term would be easier. On that note, anyway. The color-changing sky was definitely disconcerting, even as it piqued her artist’s eye. Pretty colors, but why were they there?

Nor was she quite as apt as that younger Gryffindor to believe Nem’s little suggestion that it was the apocalypse. Although, combining it with the appearance of Muggle weathermen at the gates, she was willing to make a guess that it was definitely something going awry with all the spells on the castle. As long as it didn’t lead to Dark wizards infiltrating Hogwarts, aside from some questionable Slytherins although on the whole she had nothing against the house, or anything particularly disastrous…she could handle pretty colors. Even dark and stormy pretty colors. It was called chiaroscuro, people.

“Good afternoon, Professor Fuller-Thompson,” she greeted the man with a smile, sliding into a seat somewhere between her sister’s and the windows, sliding notetaking materials out along with her textbook so as to be ready for whatever came next.

As to the subject of the reading she had done, all she could think about was that gossip paper she’d heard about from various extended family members who’d come here in the past.

Ginevra 05-16-2020 10:01 AM

Fiona walked into the classroom and greeted the man with her usual smile and "Good afternoon, Professor Fuller-Thompson." She quickly glanced at the board and was thankful that she had taken the time to read about the Aparecium Charm. Fiona made her way to a vacant desk before she sat down and got ready for the lesson. It was only then that she noticed the purple sky which made her a tad curious.

hjhm 05-16-2020 10:40 AM

The weather is starting to grow on her, sure she is still not a fan of the rain but this was better because her next class was inside. No boots nor umbrella needed. Jillian has in fact read about the topic they will be having today due to Newts this school year and this topic was one of those she had read a few days ago. Then again her knowledge about the subject will depend on how creatively difficult Professor Fuller-Thompson's questions so she's hoping to be ready. Fingers crossed.

She gave their head of house a smile "Hello, Professor" she greeted before taking a seat.

Samia 05-16-2020 11:34 AM

Missa was definitely up to date with her reading. So, naturally, she wasn’t concerned about it when she saw the words on the board - what she was however concerned about was the colour of the sky. It was strangely beautiful in a way. And while she normally never wanted to step out in the rain for no reason, she wanted to go outside - and see more of it.

“Hello Professor,” she greeted the charms teacher before settling down - clearly very interested in the on going weather conversation that had stirred around her.

Shanners 05-16-2020 11:37 AM

Odaline had done the reading and more. She liked Charms class. She didn't tell people she liked it, but it was one of her higher graded classes all the time. She entered the classroom, sparing a quiet look at Professor Fuller-Thompson and took a seat at the back. She did better at the back. Everyone did better when she was at the back. No one looked at her funny if she was at the back and then no one got bitten.

They all obviously deserved it.

DuckyLinJi 05-16-2020 12:13 PM

*sits next to Odaline*

The words written on the blackboard combined with Aboli's words made him stop entering the classroom. He KNEW he had forgotten something.... Maybe he could blame the weird weather lately?

Uncharacteristically, Minjae quietly entered the room and after a quick "Hello Professor" and hoped that he wasn't going to take Aboli's advice, before he made his way over to the back of the class where he took a seat next to a Slytherin girl (Odaline) and placed his bag on the floor next to him.

He glanced at the blackboard once before he opened up his bag and took out his text and note book as well as a pen before he folded his hands together.

"Please don't give a quiz. Please don't give a quiz" he muttered quietly.
