It was another BEAUTIFUL day at Hogwarts. The sun was shining, the birds were chirping, the students and staff were fading as if they were ghosts, everything was terrifying and there was no promise of tomorrow...

It was FINE. Everything was fine. Nothing to worry about.

Pierson Fuller had always been one to glide on by as if nothing were wrong, rather than focus on what WAS wrong. This time wasn't TOO much different. The Charms professor obviously knew there was something amiss with Hogwarts (once again) and he and all the others were OBVIOUSLY fading into transparency (which was a very strange feeling), but he was putting on a facade of nonchalance to keep things LIGHT. Some people were just too serious, you know?

So that was why that day in particular he had planned to make the lesson more of a game.

And because magic wasn't working anymore and they couldn't really practice much charm work without magic.

The classroom was set up quite differently this time. All of the desks and chairs had been pushed to the walls of the classroom, leaving the large center of the classroom empty. Instead of chairs, cushions of all different shapes and sizes, colors and materials were scattered all around the classroom floor. It had taken the professor quite some time to scrounge up enough cushions for the whole class (and then some), considering he couldn't use a duplication spell at the moment.

At the front of the class, Professor Fuller-Thompson is sitting on his desk casually. Beside the desk, the chalkboard displays a simple message:

Claudine had had enough of this fading away and memory losses. She was ready for them to go back to normal and pronto, too. Sadly, that didn't seem to be happening but she still hoped it could happen soon, especially since the term was winding down and it was almost time to go home. But that time hadn't come as yet and it was actually the time for yet another lesson. "Hi, Professor.'' These days, it was simply easier to not bothering trying to remember the professors' {or anyone else for that matter} names. Claudine did know that she liked him a lot though.

Oh. Look at all the cushions. The Castle had held that amount? It seemed difficult to believe. The message on the board did not go unnoticed which made her suspect this was going to be one of those classes that one would classify as extra fun.

Naya was wondering.........how could they possibly do Charms, if they had no magic? Not to mention the fact that she was becoming more and more see through every day. Everything was completely crazy and it was becoming harder for her to focus on her classes. With a sigh, Naya arrived at the Charms classroom. “Hello Professor”, she said before stopping short. The floor is lava? Well this was definitely going to be interesting.

The desks had been moved and the room was full of cushions. Naya tried to imagine what they would be doing, given this set up. The possibilities were endless. Making sure to avoid the “lava”, she stood to the side of the room. “Are we supposed to sit on the cushions Professor?” Or were they just supposed to stand and wait for further instructions?

"I KNOW THAT GAME!!!" Kitt had only barely made it into the classroom before his eyes spotted the board and the message written on it. Sure he knew that game, he used to play it with his siblings aaallll the time. With magic not being a thing here ~~just his luck when he finally got to a magic school~~, the boy had a feeling he'd know exactly what to do this lesson.

It was weird, you know? At first, everyone was convinced this was fine and weird things always happened, but the lighter they all got was the less certain people he talked to were becoming. This made him less sure.

It made it harder to sleep in case he woke up and he wasn't there anymore. He didn't wanna admit it until someone else did but he was getting pretty scared now....

Seeing that today they might be playing a game, he sorta found it in him to relax a little, even offered the man a small smile as he walked further in. "Morning, Professor."

Aboli Solomon Song was very calm today considering how abysmal yesterday had been for her mentally. She missed her mum so much, and on top of that, she was having dreams about bio dad calling her something she had loooong since forgotten he used to call her. How was it she was forgetting everything else, but THAT had to come back into play? It was utterly ridiculous.

She stepped into Charms feeling good, though. Toast and runny eggs for breakfast and a nice little trip up the stairs had her feeling almost peppy. UNTILLLLLLLL she read the words on the board.

"AHAAAHAHHHHHHHHHHHH!" she SCREAAAAAMED and leapt to a cushion, making sure her entire BOTTOM FIT ON IT WITHOUT TOUCHING THE GROUND AS SHE HUGGED HER KNEES TO HER CHEST. "How DARE you not put the sign on the door before we enter, Professor - Professor!" she forgot his name. So he was now Professor Professor.

Charms class without the use of charms. This should be interesting... Even so, Isla had high hopes for this class. Fuller-Thompson surely had something fun and exciting for them, right?! The second year entered the classroom and took a look around. Cushions...and lots of them.

"Hello, Professor," she said, not giving the cushions a second thought. The lesson would unfold soon enough, and she was never so excited that she couldn't wait a few minutes to see what was in store.

That is until she looked up on the blackboard and happened to notice four very familiar words. 'THE FLOOR IS LAVA'. With wasting a split second, Isla dashed for a cushion and got good and situated on it without any part of her touching the floor. SAFE!

Screaming from the Charms classroom was almost promising, but naturally it turned out nothing interesting was even happening. Of course. Why was this school so full of disappointments always.

Though Nem glanced at the board upon entering the classroom, they gave no reaction regarding the 'topic' of today's 'lesson'. Instead, they just greeted the professor with a simple, "'Sup, Schmoe," before sidling over to the back of the room and hopping up to perch on the desk, à la their sage and venerable (read: old) host, Fuller-Thompson.

Heath had had enough of these memory lapses! Not even writing his schedule down helped him remember where he was supposed to be anymore because he kept losing the paper. For some reason, he thought they had DADA instead of Charms today and had gotten all the way to the first floor before he realized he was in the wrong place. At least he got the time of the lesson right!

He rushed to the third floor, stopping just short of the charms classroom when he heard screaming. What in the galaxy was that about? Was someone in trouble? He wasn't sure he wanted to find out! Although his mind warned him to turn back while he had the chance, his braver side won out. He ventured into the room to find everything looked normal… or as normal as could be given the circumstances. So why all the screaming?

Oh, that was why. Heath understood as soon as he saw the writing on the board. The floor is lava…That gave him an idea! Could they reenact the Duel on Mustafar, please? He could use his wand as a lightsaber prop - because a prop was pretty much all it was good for anymore. All he needed was a partner to be the Obi-Wan Kenobi to his Anakin Skywalker… or they could switch parts if someone else really wanted to be Anakin. Either way was fine with him! He was so excited about that idea that he almost forgot to greet Professor… really long name that he couldn’t recall at the moment. “Hello, Professor,” he said as he settled onto the nearest open cushion.

Hold on… If the floor was lava and he’d been standing on it, did that mean he was supposed to be all burned like Darth Vader now?

"The GAME hasn't STARTED YET, duhhhhhhh," Bernie announced to her classmates, coming in and immediately reading the board. She had a feeling they were going to play a game anyway since she saw the cushions all over the floor, but she also didn't wanna be like everyone else and get all excited for this game. Even if she WAS all excited. She had to act cool. She was, like, 14 years old by now. Probably. Hadn't her birthday passed???

Anyway, Bernie stuck her nose up in the air a bit and came over to stand by Kitt. Muggleborns, y'know? They had to stick together. Also, "Hi Groundsk---er, Professor.... Fuller..." she gave the teacher a small smile and wave. She'd never forget HIS name, after the... well, hadn't there been something she was supposed to be feeling guilty about every time she saw him? She almost wanted to call him Curtis's dad, too. Huh. So her memory loss wasn't THAT bad today! She remembered a few fun facts!

Carsyn was questioning the WHY and WHAT was the point of classes daily right now? Like life was just seemingly to go on around them even as they were fading into non-existence? She heard shouts from within the charms classroom before she entered and almost wondered if she was late, but upon entering, she was not.

The floor is lava, well that was a fun game and reminded her of two graduated Gryffindors. She wondered at that moment how were Zoryn and Faith doing? Did they know of Hogwarts Students and Professors fading into nonexistence?

Plopping down on one of the cushions, she nodded at the Groundskeeper/Professor. "Good day, Professor?" He seemed to not have a care, so she guessed so... but wasn't it weird to try to teach them something they couldn't do properly?

Once again, Morgan followed the crowd of students into another classroom, hoping that it would be the right class. And today it appeared that class was Charms, by the look of the professor sitting on his desk all cool-like.

"Hey, Profess-- YESSS!!" he shouted, his attention almost immediately diverted as he caught the words on the chalkboard. He LOVED this game and they even played it in the common room sometimes, so clearly he was an expert. And he bounded into the room, quickly jumping onto the cushions laid out on the floor.

Text Cut: Greetings!

Alright, that was enough chaos for now. Besides, it was time to get the lesson started, even though he wasn’t sure how much they would learn without being able to do ANY of the practical portion of the lesson. Oh well. ”Okay, everyone, eyes up here! We’re going to start class.” Even though it LOOKED like all fun and games, there WAS still a whole lesson planned and they had to be ready to learn now.

”Alright,” Piers said once he had the attention of the students again. ”Now, thankfully in this situation, we are all being kept afloat by these nice cushions. But I want to get a discussion going. in the completely unlikely circumstance that you find yourself somewhere where the floor is lava... what kind of charms would you want to use to protect yourself?” From the lava, from the elements, from sinking... it was a broad question. But that was how discussions started.

At least, as far as he could remember. At this point he couldn’t remember how his classes usually went, or how students responded to them or.... If he even went to college.

Whatever.

Fiona was settled on one of the cushions feeling utterly ridiculous and slightly moody. She didn't feel like playing any sort of games or whatever this was. Usually, she would answer questions in Charms class but this time she kept her mouth shut and her arms folded. School was becoming very tiresome.

It was NOT fine. Everything was the OPPOSITE of fine. Everything was to worry about.

Nina had never been one to glide on by as if nothing were wrong, instead she chose to focus on what WAS wrong. This time wasn’t much different. She was very much preoccupied with the worry of upcoming exams that she had no idea how to approach with a terrible memory. Her entire body was TRANSPARENT. And every time she tried to put a quill in hand, it would slip right through her on first attempt.

When she first walked in, the set up of the class did nothing to calm her nerves. In fact, the cushions only amped up the worries. Obviously this meant when she had walked in, Professor Fuller-Thompson received a SKEPTICAL look instead of the usual polite smile ~~which stood for how much she didn’t like him~~. The floor is lava? Um. No it isn’t. That would be ridiculous.

Whatever he meant by it, she already knew she hated it.

Somewhere, a Zoryn Spinnet was mourning the fact that she couldn’t take part in this lesson. Couldn’t be Nina Castillo though. Couldn’t be her.

Nina had situated herself by one of the walls, sitting down (all prim and proper) on one of the chairs that had been pushed off to the corner. She watched as the last few students trickled in and then turned to ~~analyze~~ watch their Professor as he began to address the class.

This question was ridiculous and she did not want to entertain it. The real answer? No. She would never find herself in the unlikely circumstance where she found herself somewhere where the floor was lava. She would have planned for any circumstance she would have found herself in. And that was ridiculous. She wanted to be a healer, not some auror to find themselves in the midst of sudden danger. She was also intelligent and would never put herself in a circumstance of uncertainty. She also would NEVER go anywhere with an active volcano. So no. Next question, please.

Oh yes, very familiar, and very much eyeing the students who were obviously missing the point that it was only a game. No real lava. They couldn't even shoot sparks from their wands, where would the professor go finding real lava?

Kitt hopped onto one of the cushions, despite not having been told to. If the floor was lava, he really wanted to get into the spirit of the game. Right now, the world was crashing down around him. Any and all distractions were welcome.

"I dunno how, and I'd probably die but let's say I did know how to cast stuff." Kitt prefaced, sticking his hands out when he nearly lost his balance. "I'd cast a spell to make the lava ice, then it wouldn't be a problem anymore and I could go ice skating instead--Professor? Do I have my friends with me?" Would they wanna go ice skating?

"Are we in danger? Professor Headmaster Treyven says you always have to be careful. Is something hunting us or can we have fun after--because then I might have to change my answer."

The floor was lava!! That was the best game in the world as a kid ... but .. now that Blake was a wizard it kind of took on a whole new meaning....... like they could actually make the floor lava .. and that was something of it's self..... but .. what charms .. could he use.

"Professor would Aguamenti work here?" It was the charm to produce water ... but it might not be powerful enough for such a large portion of lava.

Avalon was busy examining her left forearm, which was looking particularly translucent today, as Professor Fuller-Thompson began class. She had a difficult time focusing. Things were getting weirder at Hogwarts by the day, and while the fourth-year was more than used to strange occurrences happening around the castle, this episode was even more disturbing than the last. How long would it be until she forgot her family, her friends, or even her own name? It had been so long since she'd been able to use her wand. Would she even remember how to cast spells if magic did come back?

To shake off the disturbing thoughts, she figured she would at least try to pay attention to the lesson. Avalon hoped that today's class wasn't a foreshadowing of what was to come. If the floor at Hogwarts did turn into lava, they would be doomed. She racked her brain, trying to remember all the charms that could be useful in that situation. There was aguamenti, of course, but it would take quite a lot of water to douse the entire floor. Would a cooling charm work? Avalon raised her hand tentatively. "There's the freezing charm, but I don't know if it would work on such a large area. You'd probably have to use Glacius Duo or Glacius Tria to get the full effect." She only knew how to cast Glacius Duo herself, but it's not like it would even come in handy if the floor was to turn to lava right now. They couldn't use magic anyway.

To say the prefect was a little tense was an understatement. Even arriving on time to Charms, he felt different although that could well have more to do with how he was now threatening to actually turn invisible at a moments notice. It was like someone had caught him with a slow acting spell that turned him invisible and now he was just playing the waiting game. Honestly, it was testing his patience more than anything so when he actually walked into the charms classroom, his expression was a real mixture. Was he annoyed? Frustrated? Worried? Confused? All of the above. It also didn’t help that the lessons these days weren’t exactly all that…structured? Without magic, he felt lost. Lessons seemed a little pointless almost.

So, when he caught sight of the pillows, the sigh that left his slightly parted lips was audible and the message…it did nothing to soothe him. Instead, he simply made his way to one of the desks that had been pushed to one side and waited for the lesson to start. Needless to say, he was alone because making someone else suffer his weird moods these days seemed unnecessary and pointless. Indeed, he even approved of the way no one seemed to notice his entrance and left him stew. It was appreciated.

When the lesson did start though, he somehow found himself standing in lava? Oh, the joys. Luckily though, he wasn’t the only one. Briefly, his eyes flickered towards Nina and then moved back to the Professor. Usually he would have moved to sit down and join the rest of the class but he just…didn’t feel like it. He didn’t want to pretend like everything was okay today. He would however answer her question, albeit with a basic answer. “Ascendio. Just to get away from the lava. Hopefully I’d be able to move somewhere that away from it. Or you know, I’d apparate away”. He was fully aware that apparating wasn’t exactly a charm but you know, it was a means to an end. He wasn’t to not use a spell that could work if it saved his life.

Claudine had been standing ‘in the lava’ all this while but she didn’t care. For one thing, she suspected that the words on the board were meant for the activity part of the lesson. For another, if her reasoning was true, the activity had not started. But the lesson was and she made her way {walking quite normally and not jumping from cushion to cushion}. This Snakette moved to the beat of her own drum, okay?

Her hands went up. “A Hover Charm which I would use on myself.’’ Then there would be no chance of the lava hurting her, unless of course, the Charm failed. Then that would just be the end of her, wouldn’t it?

This was off to such a strange lesson, but honestly Carsyn couldn't say she was particularly surprised. The face that one Nina Castillo was making right now though was priceless and it made the sixth year wish she had her Flat Newt!Camera with her to snap a picture.

No time for that though because they were starting class and also the floor being lava wasn't a REAL thing, was it?? Wasn't it just some game?? Carsyn tilted her head for a moment to contemplate all this and wonder if there was a real place that had REAL LAVA for a floor. No. It was fictional. She was sure about it.

"Thermal protection charm." She answered simply. Got to prevent those burns. Was this a real charm? Honestly, Carsyn had literally NO IDEA, but if it wasn't it SHOULD be and maybe she could invent it??

Honestly, did Professor FT know what he had just said? He said he was KEEPING THEM ON THEIR TOES. Aboli had to laaaaugh. "You mean OFF our toes, right?" she grinned as she gestured at his sign and cackled to herself. That was a great joke, and she thought everyone should laugh at it! Aboli rarely thought her jokes were funny, all right?

Aaaaaanyways. "I think an apparition charm would be good. You could just, you know, apparate awaaaaay out of the danger!" she nodded. Duh. Plus freezing charms and whatnot had been said, and Aboli wasn't sure if aguamenti would even work???

Nem stuck one solitary finger into the air; being such a gracious and cooperative student, they weren't adverse to giving an answer. "Wily charms." Ha. Useless, sure, but who could blame them for that answer? Their brain was being hypothetically boiled in their skull from exposure to super hot lava. Or something.

Isla stayed afloat on her little cushion raft. I mean, her book bag was a goner by now, but everything else was safe and secure on the cushion. She stared at the floor, imagining it to be lava. Real lava. Would it be in poor taste to answer that she'd 'use the charm he was about to teach them'? Because that was coming.

She nodded along at Kitt's answer. Good plan there, Kitt. Kent? Ken? Nah, she was going with Kitt. It rang a bell in her mind. Anyway, where had she been in her train of thoughts? Uhh... Oh, yeah! The floor is lava!

"What about the Imperturbable Charm?" she said, raising her hand. "We could use it to keep the lava from burning us." That was all that came to mind right now, but really, she figured he was about to introduce a new charm anyway. Something specific to lava and protecting yourself from it.

Heath didn’t have much time to get lost in his plans for a Star Wars reenactment before a girl’s (Bernie) voice distracted him. Blink, blink. He thought Professor… what’s-his-name was in charge of this activity, not her. And did she really need to use the word “duh”? That sounded kind of rude. Did she do things like that a lot? It seemed like she did, but he couldn’t recall. Hmm… maybe he had her confused with someone else.

Never mind, class was starting., Heath focused his attention on the professor, considering the scenario carefully. Hmm… cooling the lava might work, but would the size of the room determine the spell’s effectiveness? The professor didn’t say how big the room with the lava floor was. If it was a huge area, a single spell might not cover all of it. He thought using a spell on himself would work better than using one on the lava, and it seemed a lot of his classmates were thinking along the same lines.

Ascendio, Hover Charm, Apparition… all good ideas, but Heath wanted to come up with his own answer rather than piggyback off of someone else’s. He thought for a minute, struggling to come up with something that wasn’t already said until an idea occurred to him. Would a flame freezing charm work? Probably not… lava was primarily rock, not fire. Not trusting his answer to be correct and unable to think of anything else to say, he kept quiet for now.

Nina Castillo was looking extra sour today. One might dare say she was even grumpier than he was, and that was really saying a lot. Piers was never one to FORCE his students to participate (what they got out of the lesson was completely up to them), but he didn’t miss another opportunity to give her another one of his stares to make her like his lesson even less.

This kid, though - Piers liked him. He had a lot of energy. And he talked a lot, which filled the time, which meant he didn’t have to talk as much. He nodded at his solution to the lava situation, but didn’t have much time to reply because then he started asking QUESTIONS.

Questions about his hypothetical situations. ”Errr, sure,” he responded to the question about friends. As for the question about danger... ”Well, if you happen to find yourself somewhere surrounded by lava, yes, I’d say you were in imminent danger.”

”Well, it depends on what you are trying to achieve,” the professor responded. ”Lava is over a thousand degrees celsius, so if you were to spray water onto it, it would just evaporate.” So, it really wouldn’t do much. ”If you were just thirsty, however, then that would do the job.”

There was aguamenti, of course, but it would take quite a lot of water to douse the entire floor. Would a cooling charm work? Avalon raised her hand tentatively. "There's the freezing charm, but I don't know if it would work on such a large area. You'd probably have to use Glacius Duo or Glacius Tria to get the full effect." She only knew how to cast Glacius Duo herself, but it's not like it would even come in handy if the floor was to turn to lava right now. They couldn't use magic anyway.

”Ah, the freezing charm,” he repeated with a nod after she went on. ”You’re probably right - it would likely take a stronger version of the charm and quite a bit of time, but you might be successful.” Might. He didn’t know if anyone had tried it before, honestly.

Indeed, he even approved of the way no one seemed to notice his entrance and left him stew. It was appreciated.

When the lesson did start though, he somehow found himself standing in lava? Oh, the joys. Luckily though, he wasn’t the only one. Briefly, his eyes flickered towards Nina and then moved back to the Professor. Usually he would have moved to sit down and join the rest of the class but he just…didn’t feel like it. He didn’t want to pretend like everything was okay today. He would however answer her question, albeit with a basic answer. “Ascendio. Just to get away from the lava. Hopefully I’d be able to move somewhere that away from it. Or you know, I’d apparate away”. He was fully aware that apparating wasn’t exactly a charm but you know, it was a means to an end. He wasn’t to not use a spell that could work if it saved his life.

Were the prefect and Nina friends? Because it seemed like they would get along. ”Well, I suppose that’s true,” Piers said flatly. MOVING ON.

See, there was a kid with an imagination, taking the activity seriously. He appreciated that. ”Yeah, there you go. That’s a good one.” Then they could just float on down the lava river and be totally fine.

Ascendio, Hover Charm, Apparition… all good ideas, but Heath wanted to come up with his own answer rather than piggyback off of someone else’s. He thought for a minute, struggling to come up with something that wasn’t already said until an idea occurred to him. Would a flame freezing charm work? Probably not… lava was primarily rock, not fire. Not trusting his answer to be correct and unable to think of anything else to say, he kept quiet for now.

Now, Heath LOOKED like he had an answer to share... but apparently he was just going to keep quiet. Oh well.

”Well, good answers, everyone.” MOST everyone, but this was intended to be a light-hearted lesson and he wasn’t really in the mood to get after anyone. Even the kids in the back who didn’t want to join in on the lava fun. He WOULD soon make them, though.

”Lava or not, there are many charms to keep you upright, or to whisk you away from danger, or just to help you float. And that’s what we’re going to focus on today: the unsinkable charm.” With that, Piers waved his wand towards the chalkboard to reveal the incantation and wand movement, despite not being able to practice it. They still needed to know.

A lot of people died.” But whatever, this wasn’t a history lesson.

”So, for the next few minutes, I want you all to practice this incantation AND the wand movement. I know that we’re in a bit of a magical stall right now, but just pretend, alright? After you practice, make sure you write down what’s on the board into your notebooks.” Especially since everyone kept forgetting everything. ”And then I want you to write down three other circumstances where an unsinkable charm would prove itself useful. After you think of some, please raise your hand and share ONE idea with the class.”

He paused to make sure no one had questions. ”Alright? Get practicing and thinking.” He was just gonna stay riiiight there, on his desk, nice and safe from the lava.
