Default Herbology Lesson 1: Herb Spirals

Bright and early on the first day of classes you find yourself heading to the greenhouses after having your first breakfast with the Beauxbatons students. Your first class, a lesson for all Herbology students regardless of year level, is scheduled to begin at 8am sharp.

At the base of the impressive main greenhouses there is a smaller greenhouse that was mostly used for storage until it was assigned as a learning space for Hogwarts students, who are lucky to have both a greenhouse of their own (even if it is a small one) and a small garden area at the back. At least, it SEEMS to be a garden area - right now it is empty aside from piles of different soils, and stacks of what seems to be building materials.

In the greenhouse itself there is a large central table area set up in a squared off U shape. Inside the U there is a smaller table, which has various potted herbs arrayed across it. It DOES smell rather lovely, and gently stimulating for those of you who are still a little sleepy. To one side you can see directly through the glass into Professor Beryl's office space - it is small but convenient that she can keep an eye on the greenhouse from within it. However she is not within right now: at the top of the U there is a blackboard (currently blank) and your professor stands next to it, smiling in warm welcome.

"Good morning, please stow your gear in one of the cubby holes and label it with your name," There were several around the perimeter of the greenhouse, both under the workstations and above, "And take a seat at the table. Take out your journal and writing materials please - you won't need anything else for now, unless you have allergies, in which case please put a face mask on. While we wait for everyone to arrive, see if you can identify any of the herbs by scent or by sight - but stay seated please." It shouldn't be long, your professor always likes to start on time after all.

ooc: Welcome to your first class of the term! Both IC and OOC. For your reference, this lesson is directly before the DADA lesson that will be next to open. If you want to know more about this classroom, you can take a look at this thread. You can post your student arriving, claiming a cubby and stowing all their Herbology stuff, and taking guesses about what herbs they see and smell. I have an appointment in about 11 hours time, so I'll be starting the lesson after I get home from that. So its safe to say you have at least 13 hours and up to 16 hours to post arriving (I will give a heads up in the chat when I start on my reply ) As always, if you have any questions, you can PM me.

Index:
Question 1: What garden designs have you seen? How do you think the layout or the shapes of a garden effects the plants within it?
Question 2: how do you think the Three Druidic Elements apply to a spiral garden?"
some responses and last chance to answer the above question
Mini Activity: Identify ten plants from the table. Use your textbooks to help figure them out, and be sure to make notes on how you know what they are (identifying features etc).
Five minute warning to complete mini activity (you can still easily jump in here!)

Racing towards the greenhouses after a good good sleep thanks to that lavender spray combined with other oils to calm her down, Nora took a look around the greenhouses and saw the 'garden' area that had some vibe it would be good soil. Once an instant moment of planning went by, she stepped into the greenhouse for class and glanced over to see where she'd sit down, and spot the professor. "G'morning!" She gave a small wave to him and took the stroll around to grab the cubby, take her seat and label it "Nora Barrie. 5th Year Hufflepuff"

Default Twin, Cole and that group <3 And obviously the professor
Shoe!Girl │ Rebel Ravie │ Confundus Queen │ RP Addict

The early time for the lesson hadn’t bothered Carys as much as it could have. Especially as for a moment during the feast she’d been afraid that they were going to be reliving the SORE activities and have to get up hours earlier than anyone actually wanted to. Plus, she’d woken up early anyway out of curiosity about Quidditch. At the very least she’d hoped there’d be somewhere she could keep up with her training so her U-17 team didn’t feel let down when she was able to play with them again. So far, she hadn’t had much time to find those answers out, and besides, it was still weird not being able to sleep with Gwydion in her bed with her. She was already going through kitty cuddle withdrawals.

At least the greenhouse made her happy. “Good morning, Professor Beryl,” she greeted the women, as she’d moved over to the cubbyholes and placed her bag in the one already occupied by her sister’s. Adding a label reading ‘Carys Rose, Hufflepuff’ to it as requested, even though she knew it would be safe with Carsyn’s. It was only then that she’d glanced over at the table to figure out where to sit, tapping her sister on her shoulder as she’d moved to a seat on the opposite side of Cole. Silent greeting for the twin, but she’d given her cousin a smile.

“Feeling better, Cole?” she asked softly, blue eyes flickering over to the herbs on the smaller table. Definitely peppermint, sage and a few others she recognized. Was that a lemon verbena over there too? Something lemony.

cookie Finally, *I* get to go to *Tegz's* ~herbology lesson~ and mes--- I mean, learn!!
Professor Pink | Mrs. Bruce Wayne | I'm on a Goat | Glitterpuff | Dumbledore's Defense Squad | BHB

Bernie knew this school was going to be different from her last school the minute they tried forcing "steamed vegetables" on the kids. She'd thought the French were supposed to be good at cooking, with all their fancy cast iron skillets and wine-based stews and hearty breads and delicate patisserie. But no, they gave us VEGETABLES. Not even ROASTED vegetables, or vegetables covered in juicy French butter--- nay, the vegetables were PLAIN and BORING and MADE YA FART.

After a somewhat disappointing breakfast (again, everything was LOW SUGAR and WHOLE GRAIN thanks Obama), the sugar addict had made a VERY important detour to her dormitory to snag a VERY important cookie. She knew she'd need these at school, and was very glad she had stashed a Tupperware full in the bottom of her trunk. They were browned butter chocolate chunk cookies, and she was eating one now as she skipped into her FIRST WIZARD CLASS EVER.

"Hiya," Bernadette beamed at the professor, still nomming her cookie as she made her way to a seat near the window. They didn't care if they ate in here, right, since they were outside and all? But heavens, this place was full of things that tickled her nose! Bernie could feel it twitching already, but she was determined to NOT sneeze on her cookie.

Analiese somewhat drowsily entered the classroom and yawned upon her entry. Who thought it was a good idea to have a class at 8 am the day after they arrived? "Good morning, Professor.", she said as she walked to her seat. Then the beautiful aromas of the herbs suddenly hit her. There was a hint of rosemary and peppermint, aloe vera and lemongrass. Ok, maybe the aloe vera and lemongrass were just her perfume. But the smells were still very stimulating and swiftly got rid of her sleepiness.

be curious, not judgmental

Teddy had been a fine student all his life, but never in a setting like this. Beauxbatons was a school his mum had attended for six years, so he had gotten valuable intel from her on what to expect-- but at the same time, he wasn’t a student of Beauxbatons, he was a student of Hogwarts with Hogwarts classmates and mostly Hogwarts professors and he was sorted into a Hogwarts house and-- everything was BEAUXBATONS, though. It was strange, not knowing which adults primarily spoke English and which ones spoke French. He had studied French for the last several years in primary school, so he could almost keep up, but even the thought of any interactions with them had him on edge. What if they judged him on improper use of French? He was okay at it and hoped to improve upon it in his time here, but what if people laughed at him because he was just some kid trying to speak French but ultimately sounded like an idiot?

This morning, the only thing that kept his overall state of excessive worrying to a manageable level was the presence of people he knew and loved. His sweetest friend in the world, Cecelia, and his twin, Phoebe, had paved the way for him by entering the greenhouse with enough sunshine and enthusiasm to light up the whole room. He slipped in after them, quietly chose the cubby beside Fi, and labeled his "T.J." before taking the seat at the table beside her. He offered the pair of them grateful smiles - whether they understood he was thankful to them for being his human shields from attention or not - and extended his wordless greeting first to the guy Cecelia had chosen to make friends with, then to the professor. Nervous, but genuine smiles all around.

He began to set out his writing materials when he spied Fi lean forward and... lick a plant. While his brain went NO DON'T, his face and posture remained entirely still. Watching. Waiting.

And then a smile. "How was that?" he whispered, narrowly resisting the urge to giggle, his eyes flickering to the professor to offer an apologetic look on behalf of his sister in case she had seen.

you wanna fite? | 💚 nickleback 💚 | Uh, anyway.

Yoyo floated into the class-

No, literally, she was floating. She had asked an older Hufflepuff to enchant her shoes with a hovering spell so she could traverse Beauxbatons with all the grace of a fairy.Yoyo hummed, tossing back her hair with an elegant little wave Yoyo glanced around, looking for her friends before she even considered looking at the classroom or her Professor.

Sitting with a much older student were the Twins, and Cecelia, but no sign yet of Flynn-y or Octavia- she assumed they'd be around sooner rather than later. "Bon Jour, Professor Beryl. It's so pretty in here!" Yoyo said, beaming at the Healer as she floated on by, heading with ease toward the cubbies. "Hiiiiiiii, Good morning again." She said to the Twins and Cecelia - they had all been together at breakfast but a proper greeting felt necessary in such a serious setting - before tucking away her things, adding her initials to the cubby and then gliding on toward the larger table to get properly settled in with pen and paper.

The Hufflepuff wriggled her nose, the scent of all the herbs, and dirt making her nostrils itch something fierce. Yoyo listened as her friends answered, carefully considering their words before chiming in. She didn't want to repeat them, though she very much agreed with both PJ and Cici, but she also didn't want to not not agree.. you know? She cocked an eyebrow. "I think it smells like Citrus in here, and kind of spicy." not spicy like Jalapeño but spicy like... spice.

Despite wanting to keep looking at some of the fine looking French boys, being late on the first day of classes was never a good sign. Just before entering the greenhouses, the brunette shoved the rest of the muffin into her mouth.

Chew. Chew. Chew. Oh. Putting her things into a cubby, labeled with 'CARSYN ROSE, GRYFFINDOR'.

"Morning, Professor Beryl" it was too early to say if it was a good one or not. Oooh if the bran didn't wake her up, the sweet aromas coming from herbs were working their way to her senses and perking her up. "Is that ... Peppermint?" She was pretty sure something minty was in the air. Or it was just someone's toothpaste?
"Good morning Carsyn. Peppermint? Perhaps it is." She said with a smile, not giving anything away just yet. She was pleased to see the girl finishing her food before she got settled in.

Ipso facto, she did feel a bit relaxed and did sleep after the feast.

Putting on an expression of calm, Fiona entered the greenhouse and placed her items into a cubby which she labelled, "Fiona Jenovick. Slytherin First Year." She grabbed her journal and two quills and started to head towards a seat but before sitting down, she said with a polite smile, "Good morning, Professor Beryl! Is that er..rosemary that I can smell?"

Fiona had no idea as she sat down. She lived in New York until a year ago and herbs didn't feature largely in her day-to-day life.
"Lovely to meet you, Miss Jenovick." Professor Beryl answered. "Hmm. We will see if it is."

''Good morning,'' the first year said to the Professor and for anyone else who cared. The aroma of herbs greeted her and she thought she recognised one or two. What her thoughts were, she did not say out aloud. Who needed to talk when it wasn't necessary, anyway?

The Snakette retrieved her journal and the other needed writing equipment before carefully setting her bag into a cubby hole. One it read: Claudine Blaze. Done with that, she moved to a seat in an attempt to remain by herself for as long as possible.
"Good morning." Carmine greeted the next new face. "What is your name, dear?"

However, that did give her a quick moment of feeling homesick thinking about her father then her mother right away. BUT, it was alright, she would be seeing them when it was time to return for the holidays, yes?

Nevertheless, she proceeded forward looking towards the top of the U shaped table in the room where she set her eyes on the Professor waiting for the arrival of the rest of the students before the lesson began. She smiled politely before speaking trying to contain her excitement, "Good morning Professor.." Giving a proper bow of her head before she soon turned to find a seat, quickly getting settled and pulling out her parchment and quill as instructed by Professor Beryl.

It was then that she caught the whiff of another scent, it was unmistakably Jasmine, her favourite scent! Wow, she would certainly not mind spending a day in here trying to pinpoint and discover as many fragrances as she could!

Would that be alright Professor Beryl? Hmmm?
Such lovely manners! "And a good morning to you." The enthusiasm was nice to see. "What is your name?" She was good with names once she learned them, and by the end of the day she intended to have all her first years' names, and those of any new older students, locked in.

Who truly wanted to wake up right now and focus let alone teach,' she thought to herself.

As Gemma walked into the Greenhouse she was affronted by all the smells. "Good morning, Professor." She tried her best to muster up a cheery voice, who knows if it actually worked. She quietly found and labeled her own cubby, before pulling out her journal and grabbing something to write with. Leaving her bag in the cubby she went and sat near the two other Slytherins.
"Good morning dear." What was this one's name? She was unfamiliar too, so Carmine prompted her. "Can I ask your name, please?"

Sighing to herself she made her way to the Greenhouse, she wondered if they were going to have classes with the Beauxbatons students or not, that would be pretty cool. Although she was going to make the best of this year but in all honesty she was missing her second home away from home all too much.

Taking a deep breath to calm her nerves, she took cubby and simply wrote her name. Retrieving her journal from her bag, she looked up at the Professor and smiled warmly at her. "Good morning Professor Beryl lovely morning isn't it, is that peppermint I'm smelling?" Seeing her dormie as always she smiled taking a seat beside her. "Hey Carsyn."
"Good morning, Stella. It might just be." Carmine said, not yet revealing what the herbs on the table actually were. They would come to that a little later. In the meantime they could simply enjoy the varied scents.

The place smells nice... aromatic to be exact. "Good morning, professor" she said, giving Professor Beryl a soft smile and after labeling her name into her stuff she placed her it into the cubby hole. Taking her writing materials with her as she finds herself a seat.
Carmine returned the smile, not recognizing the girl. If she had attended Hogwarts before now she'd not been in the Runes lessons that Carmine had taught the previous term, and had not visited her in the hospital wing either. "Hello dear. What is your name?" She'd like to learn it sooner rather than later.

"Good Morning." Carmine responded in kind to Josie. She looked a little confused. "You only need your working journal and your writing materials for now, Josie."

Turning his attention to the professor he said cheerily "Good morning Professor Beryl," for the second time that morning before he sniffed the air. Making his way over towards Carsyn and Stella he took out the writing material and journal required before he stored his backpack in a cubby that he labeled. ’COLE VANCE, GRYFFINDOR’. Turning to the girls he took the empty seat at the table on Carsyn’s vacant side saying ”Morning Carsyn and Stella! Are you excited to start classes?” The honeysuckle smelled like his grandmas favourite perfume.
"A better morning, I hope, Cole." Carmine responded with a smile. He'd certainly seemed better when he had awoke, thankfully. "Hmmm. Do you?" Honeysuckle? Perhaps.

This wasn't exactly new, he'd suffered with insomnia since he was thirteen years old, after all. Still, it never got any less frustrating. Kaiser had spent most of the night staring up at the canopy of his bed, tired from the long day but not even remotely close to sleep. In the end he'd given up on even trying, and spent the rest of the night reading by wandlight; luckly they still had curtains around their beds so he hadn't disturbed anyone else. Probably.

Sleep or no sleep, classes were a thing that he had to go to, and here he was, in a lesson that he was, uh... not great at. Finding the place hadn't been too difficult - the fact that they had Herbology strongly suggested that they would need to head out to the grounds, at least - but even Kaiser, who had an excellent sense of direction, did not instinctively know the way to a place he had never been before. After a bit of accidental exploring, he arrived at the greenhouse assigned to Hogwarts well before the lesson started. Searching for individual classrooms later would be an interesting experience; at least when he'd started at Hogwarts his dorm-mates had already been at school for two years, meaning he could just use them for guidance. No such luck here.

"Morning," Kaiser greeted Professor Beryl once he had entered the greenhouse, before going ahead and stowing away everything bar the items he needed for the lesson. Having labelled the, uh, 'cubby hole' with a quickly scrawled 'Kaiser', he went to take a seat with everyone else.

Also, the herbs? Just smelled like plants. Kaiser wasn't even close to adept at identifying herbs by scent OR sight, and really just defaulted to calling all of them 'plants' in his head. He wasn't about to go declaring that for the entire room, either, and so opted to stay silent.
"Good morning, Kaiser." It was impossible not to give the boy a cursory look from the healer perspective. He certainly looked better than he had a year ago.... well, she'd keep an eye on him, of course.

He thought he recognized one as 'sage' something his mother had used in the kitchen before, but that was assuming wizards used herbs like sage ... he could be completely wrong.
Professor Beryl smiled encouragingly at the young boy. She had two children of her own who were first years this term (and two more older, and two more older still), so it was automatic for the warm encouragement to flow.

"Hello dear, what is your name?"
A good thing for her to learn sooner rather than later!

“Good Morning Professor”, Naya said, once inside. She found an empty cubby and quickly labeled it with her name. Reaching into her backpack, Naya took out her journal and quill. Then she placed her Herbology materials and bag inside the cubby.

Heading for the first empty seat she could find, Naya quickly surveyed the room. “Hi Jillian, she said softly, as she passed her train buddy. Then seeing Cole, she waved and mouthed “I hope you’re feeling better.” Finally at her seat, Naya sat down and arranged her things on the table in front of her. Now taking a moment to savor the aromas and look at the herbs on the table, she raised her hand. Professor, is there basil over there?”
Carmine recognized the girl from the feast, but she wasn't aware of her name and so she asked with her greeting. "Good Morning dear, what was your name?" And was it basil? "Hmmm. There may be."

It was. Nice and perfectly straight on his uniform.

He had to admit, the greenhouse had a great smell to it and he could have sworn that one of the plants was peppermint. Before he took a seat somewhere, Dorian turned his attention to the Professor as she gave out instructions while standing near the blackboard. He followed them and as he took out his notebook and pen from his bag, he placed it in a cubby before writing his name on it.

"Professor Beryl, good morning" he greeted politely before he turned around to find a seat. That was before he remembered a thing that he had wanted to ask her and he turned back around with half a twirl. "Professor, could i have a word with you after class is over?" he asked.
"Hello Dorian. Good Morning. Yes certainly, come see me in my office after class." If it was brief he'd have time before his Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson, and if it was more lengthy they could make a time for him to come back and make it a more leisurely visit.

Not that she was complaining, just surprised was all.

As Tina entered the greenhouse, a strong, but not unpleasant, smell hit her nostrils. Was that peppermint? Or maybe rosemary? The various scents of the herbs on the table sort of blended together, so it was harder to identify them individually. "Good morning, Professor Beryl," she greeted, nodding politely as she passed. She removed her journal, quills, and ink from her bag before gently placing it in the nearest empty cubby. On the label she neatly wrote her name, year, and house: Tina Dantes, 7th year Ravenclaw. She even dotted the I with a tiny drawing of a butterfly, as she always did.

Her things safely packed away, Tina took the nearest open seat and peered at the herbs on the table as closely as she could without getting up, hoping to correctly identify as many as possible before class started.
"Good Morning, Tina." Carmine greeted the young lady with a welcoming smile. She'd transferred from Beauxbatons originally had she not? It must be an odd thing to be back without actually being 'back'.

As he walked into the room he noticed a ton of the new students were already in their seats. At least they were bright eyed and mostly bushy tailed about the whole experience. He was just looking to pass his classes, play some quidditch, and absolutely pass his NEWTS. Because he needed something for after Hogwarts right?

He heard Beryl mention they needed a cubby for their things. Taking out his marker that he kept in his bag for occasions just like this. He quickly wrote his name house and year out of habit and slung his stuff aside from his journal and pen in the cubbie. Turning back around he noticed Kaiser, Tina, and Dorian in the room nodding his head at them he greeted Professor Beryl, “Morning Professor! Mm smells like some spearmint to me.” At least he hopped it was because if it wasn’t then his work with his grandparents over the summer was pointless and he learned nothing.
"Good morning, Patrick. Perhaps you do." She would neither confirm nor deny right yet. That would come later.

No, thanks.

Lucas let out a small yawn before entering the small greenhouse. It was weird, trying to get used to an entirely new place. And sharing dorms did nothing for how anxious he was feeling about this entire setup, which was probably the reason why he didn't get a lot of sleep until, what felt like, the last minute.

But the greenhouse smelt...... nice. Stimulating, even. Any smells of dirt or earth was overrun by the smells of herbs on the smaller table over there. Huh. He shrugged to himself and turned towards the Professor, instead. "Morning, Professor." No freaking out over runes or rune cookies today, that was for sure.

The next point of business was to find a, uh, cubby hole, as Beryl was calling them. He placed his gear inside the hole as best as he could before labelling it with a simple 'Lucas Dakest'. There. Turning around, he moved over towards the nearest seat and started taking out his writing equipment. Beryl had said something about allergies but he was choosing to ignore it. Butterscotch had nothing to do with Herbology so he had nothing to worry about.

Right?!

Now. The herbs.

Lucas craned his neck, maybe even sat up a liiiiiittle bit straighter to get a better look. Mint was a popular one and he knew which one that was but some of the others hadn't been mentioned so he was trying to concentrate on those ones, instead. Like that one over- ..... oh! The hand went up in the air before he asked, "Professor, is that one coriander? That one over there?"

"Good morning, Lucas." Carmine greeted the boy warmly. And then when he spoke up her eyes twinkled a bit. "Perhaps." Maybe it was. She'd come back to it later.

He tried not to seem so irritated by the whole affair, which was not that difficult-- considering, Alessandro was quite taciturn.

With a polite nod, he addressed his professor, "Good morning, Professor Beryl." Then, roamed through the room trying to identify the cacophony of smells.
"Good morning, Alessandro. Take a seat." Carmine said, encouraging the sixth year to settle in.

But. Not now.

Now, it was time for the first lesson of the new year, with Professor Beryl. Grinning as she moved into the Herbology space, she looked around and gave it a nice smile and a nod. Yup. This was nice. Cosy. She liked it. Itwasbetterthantheirbroomcloset. Oh, was that a garden she saw? Cute.

Scribbling ‘Holly Tamesis’ only a tag, she picked out one of the higher cubbies as she’d had a growth spurt over the summer and stored her bag after talking out her journal and quills. Slipping into a space next to some of the Slytherin’s, she gave a small smile to a few of her other friends as she once again looked around the room. Writing her name, house and year on her plaque she sniffed the air. Hmm…

She could smell peppermint and jasmine… but… she was pretty sure… she could smell mint too. Spearmint that is. Maybe. Or was she just smelling the peppermint and getting it confused. Hmm. Maybe. She looked at the table, trying to name them now that she was looking at them. … Wasn’t that sage?
"Good morning, Holly." Carmine greeted the girl when she saw her.

After he carefully placed his Herbology equipment in his cubby, he took out his journal and his quill and started writing down what he was seeing and more importantly, smelling. Eucalyptus, aconite and asphodel maybe. Freyr was not sure but like his father said no one could learn anything without being wrong for once. He then continued writing every plant he smelled or saw.
"Good morning, dear. What was your name?" Carmine had another one to commit to memory, which she would do quickly enough.

She followed Carsyn Rose to the greenhouses, saving her from getting lost, and entered to a sight and smell that made her feel slightly more at home. Even though that was back in England. With her head lost in grief, she barely remembered anyones names. That included the Professors. Unfortunately.

"Uh h-hello Professor," she said in a soft voice, approaching the Professor tentatively. "I'm Abra." She thought she'd add that in there too, because she didn't want to assume anyone would know her.

Following instructions, she took out her journal and writing materials, before stowing the rest in a cubby hole under the workstation. She spotted Fiona and took a seat next to her saying a quick "Hi Fiona," before setting up her things in front of her. The scents surrounding her were very pleasant, of which she thought she could get a faint aroma of ginger.
"Well hello dear, its nice to meet you." Carmine said kindly.

Considering everything and all the drama and fun. Anyway, she was going to put her stuff away and labeled with her first name in big letter and written underneath no touchy. Then taking a seat with her journal and pen. At least the herbs didn't smell awful.

Guess the redhead should try and see if she could smell any that were familiar.
"I did, thank you Eloise, it was a late dinner for me though." She HAD missed the feast after all.

This was like this HUGE moment in her personal magical history and something told her it was going to be GREAT!

Oh look, a blackboard! That was SO official. Aww, and the professor looking all professor-y! OH, OH! LOOK AT THE HERBS! There were SO many. Cecelia didn't even MIND that the greenhouse was smaller, or that she had to share lessons with the BIG kids, she thought it made it all the more special, really.

"I think this greenhouse is really cozy, Professor, and it smells like my kid brother after he's played out in the yard with the dogs!" Which was a compliment, naturally. "Oh, also, good morning!" Best morning so far.

Making her way over to the cubbies, CUBBIES, she found an empty one and lovingly placed her herbology tools inside. She then wrote her name-Cecelia E. Summers-in her neatest handwriting and looked around for a place to sit, journal tucked under her arm.

Spotting a boy (Kaiser) who looked very much like a sleepy puppy-dog of a guy, the first year made her way over to him and SMILED up at him, all KINDS of friendly. "Lavender helps with sleep, I think," She supplied helpfully. "Think maybe I smell some of that. Smells lovely."

The enthusiasm was nice to see.

"I quite like it myself." The greenhouse. It WAS cosy, but the glass walls made it feel far more open than other cramped quarters in the castle. "What was your name, dear?"

Nettie had really enjoyed bunking with the Ombrelune, actually. Literally everything about this school seemed to be signaling to her that if she had attended, she would have ended up there. It gave her a sort of feeling of pride - ALMOST as proud as she felt when she thought about the gleaming badge on her chest.

To say she was eager to attend her first class as a student leader was an understatement. She practically BOUNCED in to the greenhouse, taking note of the way the desks were arranged and the smaller table in the middle of the U. She smiled at Beryl as she took a seat next to Eloise. "Hello Professor!" she greeted happily.

Once she had taken her note-taking supplies out of her bag and placed them on her head, she headed over to the cubbies and grabbed an open one, labeling it "Trinetta Gladin - 5th Year Ravenclaw" before heading back and sitting next to her friend with a smile.
"Good morning, Trinetta." Carmine greeted the newly badged prefect. She was in a good mood by the looks of things.

She chucked her bag into one of the cubbies and labeled it with a scrawling "P.J." before scouting out a spot beside Cece. And some older classmate (Kaiser) with very interesting hair. She wanted to ask him about that hair.

"Good morning, Professor. It smells like a worm graveyard in here. Very rich and loamy." Phoebe leaned forward on her workstation to stick her nose into the nearest plan. Smelled more like soap than like dinner, but she still gave the leaves a lick for good measure. Tasted like dirt. Excellent.
Quick as a whip, Carmine nudged the girl back, using magic to push her bodily away from the plant she was attempting to lick of all things. "While I agree it WAS a good morning, I'm afraid you'll be losing house points. NEVER touch any plants without permission and certainly do NOT taste or ingest them. Minus two points from Gryffindor.

"Good morning, Carys." Carmine greeted the second of that particular set of twins. Lucky they were easy to tell apart.

Another new face. One with a cookie. Well, Carmine did not allow food in her lessons in general, but certainly would not allow it in the greenhouses, for safety reasons. "Finish your cookie please, dear. No eating in here, just to be sure your food is not contaminated by anything." Safety first. "And I don't allow food in the lessons." She wasn't in trouble because said lesson had not yet started after all. "What is your name, dear?"

Yes, his sister HAD been seen, and called out for it, and Carmine's warm and welcoming expression had turned a little more stern because of it, but that was only temporary.

"Good morning, and what is your name, young man?"

She said to the Twins and Cecelia - they had all been together at breakfast but a proper greeting felt necessary in such a serious setting - before tucking away her things, adding her initials to the cubby and then gliding on toward the larger table to get properly settled in with pen and paper.

The Hufflepuff wriggled her nose, the scent of all the herbs, and dirt making her nostrils itch something fierce. What on earth? Was the child floating? Carmine did not like to put a damper on things but safety first. Gently she used finite on the girl's shoes so that she would no longer be doing that. "Good morning, I'm glad you like it. Safety first, dear, lets not charm our shoes inappropriately. What's your name?"

Having greeted everyone, at 8am on the dot, Carmine closed the glass entrance door with a wave of her wand and smiled at the students.

So Professor Beryl was also the previous Ancient Runes Professor? Abra wowed with her eyebrows. The classes she was most looking forward to were Muggle Studies, because obviously, but also any class that she could practice at home without needing her wand at all. She felt clumsy with it, and was honestly underwhelmed with the whole magic thing. Sure her family had all attended Hogwarts, and they used magic occasionally, but Abra was used to a life without it.

Gardening, and the opportunity to learn and do her own work in a greenhouse, one in France none the less, was an exciting opportunity. She had a few things she needed to do, and one of them was to speak with Professor Beryl and see if she could use the Greenhouses in her own time.

It didn't take any brain juice for Abra to imagine a garden in the space indicated. Not at all. But as for a magical garden? Well, she wasn't sure. Raising her hand hesitantly, Abra said "I... I don't know about magical gardens. But for layout planning you need to think about areas of shade, sunlight, and rain exposure. Then you need to know what types of plants you want to have and lay them out according to their needs."

Freyr closed his eyes trying to imagine his mother's garden, full of beautiful flowers among which Freyr loved to sit and read books since he was little. From her mother's attempts to teach him about the plants, he remembered molies, asphodels and orchids. He imagined a dove made out of these flowers. Maybe they could be enchanted in a way that dove looked like flying. Freyr knew that he would definitely love to sit in this garden and read. He wondered if the dove would leave the same effect on others too or if the shape was created a bit wrong, would its effect complete opposite. After a couple of minutes wondering whether he should raise his hand and explain his idea or be quiet, he decided to raise his hand to ask his questions and explain his design. He was a lot more relaxed, what could go wrong, after all?

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Fiona was quite clueless when it came to gardening. After all, she lived in an apartment with her folks so huge gardens were non-existent in her life. She raised her hand slowly and said, "Er..soil. The right soil is needed for the adequate growth of plants. Plants need certain nutrients."

Yeah, that sounded correct in her mind.

Rylee couldn't have been more thrilled that the very first lesson of the term was by far her most favorite. It was the star in her chosen field of study for the future, which was coming much faster than she could have ever possibly dreamed.

Good thing for her that she was typically an early riser with the lesson being held at eight am sharp. There was more than enough time for her to take a careful morning run around the gorgeous grounds, get some breakfast and return to her 'dorm' for a shower and get her uniform on without having to rush about like a complete nutter.

At the instructions to stow away her things into a cubby, Rylee had done just that, in the closest cubby to where she was going to be seated and labelled it neatly. A warm greeting had been given to Professor Beryl as she had found herself a seat. There was just a few moments where she had allowed herself to get lost in the sweet aromas that wafted about the greenhouse just before the Professor called everyone's attention to the start of the lesson.

Moving her purple self inking quill to lay beside her journal, the sixth year lioness focused her attention upon Beryl. Raising her hand she wanted her turn before offering a reply. "The layout of a garden can be highly important to how the plants within grow. Some plants require much more room between themselves and other plants in order to grow up strong and healthy. Other plants may need to be planted in the sunlight, others don't require as much sun. If you're planting magical plants you'll want to consider how the plant may react to other plants, will it harm the plants around it or not?" Rylee smiled. Truthfully she could have went on and on about all of this but that wouldn't be fair to anyone else around her who had something to add to the topic.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

How silly of her. Claudine had forgotten to introduce herself and she offered a tiny apologetic smile. “Claudine Blaze, Professor. Slytherin first year.”

Eight AM soon dawned upon them and Claudine watched as the glass door swung shut. When Beryl began to speak, the girl adjusted herself in her seat more comfortably. Might as well be happy while learning. Quill in hand, she absently made some notes on the last page of her journal regarding the upper level of the greenhouses. These were for future reference if needed. Claudine had no intention of picking the flowers, honestly. All she wanted to do was to sit among and sketch them. They would make excellent memories in a book as opposed to plucking them. After all, they will inevitably die.

Upon the instructions, the Snakette found her imagination drifting as she considered the question. A few responses were listened to before she raised a hand. “There are bonsai gardens,” Claudine spoke up, having seen one of those before. “We should keep in mind how dangerous a plant is. A Venomous Tentacula wouldn’t be kept with fluxweed…” What Claudine was hinting at was that it was important to keep a layout similar to the Greenhouses that Hogwarts had: the more dangerous plants were kept in different Houses.

"Yesh ma'am," Bernie grinned as she obediently shoved the other half of her cookie in her mouth. She at least knew better than to try to talk until she had finished ALL of her cookie, which took her a minute but she nodded to show that she understood NO MORE COOKIES IN CLASS WHILE CLASS IS GOING ON.

Anyway, her name? Hmm, should she give a fake one? Nah, she wanted REAL credit for her work here. "I'm Bernadette!" Oh, and now they were starting, so she was shhhhhing, and dusting cookie crumbs off her robes and onto the floor.

She tried to think about magical gardens but to tell the truth, she had only ever visited Diagonally and the castle part of Beauxbatons so far, so she didn't KNOW what magical gardens were like. But, if she had to guess what THINGS to KEEP IN MIND.... of course she raised her hand and waited to be called upon before giving her answer. This wasn't so different from Muggle biology, so far.

"I think you should consider how the fauna will be impacted by your garden," Bernie answered, feeling brilliant for using one of her new and impressive words. "Certain plants can attract or um, scare off, certain creatures." Right now she was thinking of butterflies in her mum's garden, but wondering if wizards had similar plants and plant pests?

dream until your • dreams come true ~ Human pygmy puff

When the Professor asked her name, the fourth year was quick to reply. “Naya. My name is Naya Lindsay, Professor. I’m a fourth year, but this is my first year at Hogwarts......Beauxbatons.” The last part was probably obvious and unnecessary to state. Surely the professor knew that she was new. Oh well.

Finally it was time for class to begin. Naya wanted to know whose guesses about the herbs had been correct. Unfortunately, it seemed that they would have to wait to find out that answer. For now, they had an assignment and a question to answer. Following Professor Beryl’s instruction, Naya turned around and looked outside. She had a good imagination, so it didn’t take long for her to picture the area full of beautiful plants and flowers. The Gryffindor wasn’t an expert on magical gardens, but she had seen her share of muggle gardens. Back home the beautiful gardens were some of her favorite places to paint.

Raising her hand, Naya began to speak. “As my classmate said, (Rylee) you need to consider how much space the different plants need to grow. Some plants grow quickly and could overtake other plants if they are too close together. They may have roots that require lots of space. They can become entangled with other plants’ roots and impede their growth.......or they can steal most of the good nutrients from the soil and leave the other plants malnourished.”

Now taking a moment to savor the aromas and look at the herbs on the table, she raised her hand. Professor, is there basil over there?”

Catching Naya’s wave from afar Cole smiled and mouthed back to her. "Yes I’m feeling much better. Thanks Naya!" Chatting too much Cole knew was frowned upon by most professors. So he didn’t ask something back. It was sweet of Naya to ask though. It showed that his new house and year mate cared. It was something he liked in a potential friend. Cole made a note to talk to her at dinner later that day.

Returning Carys smile as she plopped down in the empty seat beside him Cole nodded quietly to his cousin. "Yes I feel much better Carys. It was the motion sickness acting up again and i think i ate a puking pastille too." He had to ask his sister Isobel if she had deliberately placed a puking pastille in his sandwich as a prank. He wouldn’t put it past her. Isobel loved causing mischief.

"We will come back to the herbs and plants in front of you in a little while- which you should not be touching," or trying to lick, "It is important to be respectful of the plants and aware that herbology can be dangerous. Plants can be poisonous, and the magical ones may have some unusual effects. Please use your common sense, and keep safety in mind at all times, and remember, as I am your healer, you won't be able to lie to me about how you got yourself poisoned, bespelled, or attacked by a plant." She would KNOW.

"Now, I'm sure most of you noticed the outside area we have and how it is currently looking a little bare," Aside from the piles of soil here and there and wood and stone and other things, "I'd like you to stay in your seats but turn around and have a look and imagine a garden out there, what it might look like. What garden designs have you seen? How do you think the layout or the shapes of a garden effects the plants within it? What things should be kept in mind when designing a magical garden? Lets brainstorm together."

And she waited for their answers.

ooc: woo sorry for the delay! Also I forgot to make a rules thread because.... I just did. So I edited the herbo rules into here. You should read those.

Smiling up at professor Beryl he nodded warmly "Yes I feel much, much better today Professor Beryl. Thank you for curing me of my health issue last night."Cole was about to say throwing up but decided not to. The professor knew what he meant.

Some minutes later the lesson got underway and Professor Beryl reminded them of safety first and not to touch any plants/herbs or the like without her go ahead. Cole memorized that carefully because he had heard how a few other student’s already had gotten points deducted for touching plants without being allowed. The question that followed was a weird one. Garden design err?

Thinking hard for a long while Cole finally raised his hand tentatively hoping that his answer wasn’t as far off as the moon. "When you plan a garden I remember that my grandma has said that the climate as well as location matters a lot like if it’s near a pond or in the desert then only certain plants, herbs, flowers, trees and so on will thrive. Also the purpose for the garden matters like if it’s for water plants or growing fruit and vegetables."

.......Siobhán had kind of tuned out Professor Beryl's voice after about two seconds. AND after making sure she'd only be talking about introductions, and rules, and other boring stuff. She was instead wondering just WHAT was upstairs inside the upper level of the greenhouses. They needed a KEY? Who would be allowed to have that key? Was it possible to access the upstairs without a key? Why? Did they Beaux students have keys? Did they Prefects have keys? Maybe the Beaux Prefects did.

Were the Beaux Prefects also called "Prefects"?

She tuned back in JUST in time for the professor's question (it was a skill she'd acquired over the past two school years to know EXACTLY when it was important to pay attention again; the skill had a success rate of about 50:50...maybe 51:49). "GNOMES!" Yes, she'd also raised her hand (possibly after saying that). "You have to make sure the garden is protected from gnomes. Somehow. Or as best as you can. They're really annoying when you have them in your garden. They're everywhere and when you think you finally got rid of them all, then all of a sudden there's two more. It's awful." Also fun, occasionally, but she doubted Professor Beryl wanted to hear about that.

A good thing for her to learn sooner rather than later!

Smiling at how kind the Professor was, Blake replied "Blake ... Blake Ryan."

SPOILER!!: class
Quote:

Having greeted everyone, at 8am on the dot, Carmine closed the glass entrance door with a wave of her wand and smiled at the students.

"Good morning everyone. I am Carmine Beryl. Those of you who were at Hogwarts last term know me as the school healer and formerly your Ancient Runes professor," for those of them who happened to take that particular subject. "You may call me Healer Beryl, or Professor Beryl depending on your preference and depending on the context." It was just easier to call her healer when she was healing, wasn't it?

"Welcome everyone to Beauxbatons." Sort of anyway. "We're very lucky to have a greenhouse space for ourselves - please note that does not mean you can't access the main greenhouses, you are welcome to, but this is our workspace for the term." And they didn't have to share it - it was off limits for the Beauxbatons students. "If you want to access the upper levels of the greenhouses, or the basement level, you need the appropriate key or go with someone who has one. I only have a limited number so please come and see me if you have a request." That was the first item on her mental list.

"Beauxbatons has expansive grounds, and they are very rightfully proud of the beautiful gardens here. Please be respectful of the plants. It should go without saying, but you are expected to be on your best behaviour. Do not try to pick any of the flowers," Especially the headmistress's roses, "and make sure you leave the gardens as you found them - clean and tidy, so that everyone can continue to enjoy them." She looked around at everyone to make sure they were paying attention. All good? Well, now she could begin the fun stuff.

"We will come back to the herbs and plants in front of you in a little while- which you should not be touching," or trying to lick, "It is important to be respectful of the plants and aware that herbology can be dangerous. Plants can be poisonous, and the magical ones may have some unusual effects. What garden designs have you seen? How do you think the layout or the shapes of a garden effects the plants within it? What things should be kept in mind when designing a magical garden? Lets brainstorm together."

And she waited for their answers.

Blake stared flat out blank faced at the Professor. People actually spent time organizing their garden like this?? Having never actually grown a garden in the muggle or wizard world he was unsure that this was even a thing. But the professor seemed to be series with her question, so it had to be something right???

"Does it really matter that much?" Blake asked in response. He realized after he said it, he may have sounded rude or questioning his professor that wasn't his intention at all, he just truly didn't know. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to sound rude ... I just have never had a garden, I didn't think it would really matter how it's organized." There, that explained it better right??

"J-jillian Kim, professor" she awkwardly reply. Jillian is shy and also because Professor Beryl has a nice voice, quite soothing actually.

Jillian smiled when Naya passed her by, she waved back and said her hello to her as well. She was about to talk to Naya but the the professor stood up to and started the lesson. Maybe they can talk after class.

Introductions were made and a briefing about the school as well. One thing for sure the greenhouse in Beauxbaton is exquisite. It looks very elegant and clean. Everything here looks clean, even the broom closet where the Slytherins are staying at. Not cool at all. Jillian nods at the no touching of the plants in front of them rule. Yes, because you will never know if it bites or worse, explode. Magical plants are a lot different and are tended differently as well. She doesn't have that much knowledge with magical gardens and/or plants but Jillian loves interior designing. Are they going to draw their very own magical garden? That will be super awesome.

What things should be kept in mind when designing a magical garden? This is key when it comes to greenhouses. Jillian raised her hand "I think there should be a proper segregation of the plants depending on what type they are. There can be areas in the garden that are more prone to sunlight than some parts" Some plants die without sunlight but some plants can survive without it.

And also, scarecrows.

The little badger smiled again as the Professor asked her for her name to which she quickly responded, "Oh, my name is Faye...Faye Asztalos.." She couldn't help but add, "I look very forward to learning more about Herbology.."

Before she knew it the lesson had begun and Professor Beryl was now addressing the whole class giving her kind welcome. Faye listened very intently as she spoke to them of the uses of the Greenhouse as Beauxbatons' guests and to not disrespect that use. Once she'd heard mention of the Professor offering a limited number of keys to access other parts of the Greenhouse that they didn't have access to, she made a mental note to ask her for one at the end of the lesson.

'Do not forget!'

After making this mental note, as she was instructed to, she turned in her seat to look out of the window to the empty space where Professor Beryl told them to imagine a magical garden and what might it include. She couldn't think of exactly what she would put for there were so many plants in the world, so she thought why not put an abundance of them, appropriately of course though. Faye heard Professor Beryl's next series of questions and she pursed her lips to the side as she thought for a few moments of what might be an appropriate thing needed to help a magical garden thrive.

Once thinking of something, her arm went into the air before she spoke calmly, "Well Professor, certainly spacing could be rather important because every plant has a different need that may not coincide with another in order for it to grow properly..For example some plants need more sun exposure than others.." Thinking of another question she quickly added, "Also, would time commitment count Professor? Gardening, magical or not, should at least be something on your mind on a daily basis to tend to before designing a layout..If your hope is to have a thriving garden.."

Stella nodded her head at everyone's especially her food friend Rylee's before taking notes in her notebook. She knew quite a bit about gardening, it was one of her favorite hobbies. She knew alot of people hated it, but she she loved it, nothing like getting your hands into the fresh soil. She loved planting things and watching it turn into big and beautiful. The smell of peppermint still lingering the air, she smiled happily at herself.

Waiting for the others to answer she raised her hand. "Well Professor I think before sowing a single seed, it is helpful to sketch a map of the garden so you know how many seedlings you will need, where they will be planted, and how you can keep each garden bed producing all through the growing season." Blushing a bit she bit her lip going back to her notes.

Gemma mentally kicked herself for not introducing herself. She smiled before saying, ""Gemma Black."

Plants were never her strong suite. She killed her house plants without even trying. They'd be alive one day, then the next they were dying. Her mom had tried to help her get better at gardening but it was ineffective. Still the greenhouse was pretty amazing. Maybe this will get her to like plants more. She snapped back to attention with Professor Beryl started teaching.

'A magical garden?' Interesting. Gemma didn't really know how to answer this question... Maybe she would just stay silent. 'Oh!' Tentatively raised her hand. "Maybe like an irrigation system or something so the garden doesn't flood..." Her voice trailed off. She hated public speaking so being in a class with everyone was overwhelming.

Default pre-lesson stuff under a cut because it made the post long (shocking, i know)
Lovely™ | Captain Hurted | Ariana's Bane | Resident Antagonist | Unparalleled Delight

SPOILER!!: before the lesson started \o/
Professor Beryl got a small smile after she greeted him. Kaiser liked her, even if he'd never been very good at her lessons; Ancient Runes and now Herbology. She had a nice, non-judgemental, calming vibe, so that it didn't even really matter all that much (other than to his grades) that he was a bit of an academic liability.

Naturally, Kaiser returned the head nod of greeting to Patrick when he saw him, friendly person that he was. Okay, admittedly he was also the type of person to talk about him in another language when the other boy was present, but... still. Those two things didn't have to be mutually exclusive, did they?

He was sort of glazed over and staring into the middle distance by the time someone took the seat beside him, at which point Kaiser turned his head to see who it was... but then had to direct his gaze a little lower. Ah. First year. Presumably. He smiled back at her tiredly, and took a few seconds to process what she was saying. Yikes, was his lack of sleep that obvious? ... Who was he kidding, he knew exactly what he looked like.

"Lavender, huh?" A first year knew something he didn't? Shocking. "I will keep that in my mind. Thanks..."

And then he trailed off, because a second first year arrived, one who Kaiser probably wouldn't have given a second thought but for the fact she tried to lick one of the plants. Was she a-...? Yes, those were definitely Gryffindor robes, and it was definitely Gryffindor that Professor Beryl just took points from.

There was another one. One that looked enough like the plant-licker that Kaiser guessed they were siblings, likely twins (though thanks to his friendship with Kodee and Jolie, his mind first went to 'two from a set of triplets'). The boy got a little wave, and-...

Now there were four of them. The last of which had initially been floating, though given this was a magic school and everything, Kaiser wasn't all that shocked. He was more surprised by the fact that he'd somehow ended up with a gaggle of first years sat right by him, and was starting to feel like this maybe didn't bode well. Was he about to be shown up by a bunch of eleven-year-olds? Probably.

No time like the present to find out. Class was starting, and Kaiser looked towards Professor Beryl again. It took all of about five seconds for Kaiser to realise he was not about to start the term off strong. His grasp of English had improved even more over the last year (he improved every year, it was difficult not to), but Tired Brain™ was slowing him down significantly. At least the majority of what the professor had said so far was more general school information than specific Herbology lesson.

Not all of it though, and Kaiser was with it enough to follow the part about garden designs. The only issue really was that at first he had not the faintest idea what to say. He was not the kind of person to think very much about gardens, or garden layouts. They were just sort of there, and not exactly of great importance in the grand scheme of things.

All the same, he eventually raised his hand. "I think you perhaps would want to keep plants that eat certain other plants away from each other." And that was all he had. Gardens were of such minimal consequence to him.

Yes, his sister HAD been seen, and called out for it, and Carmine's warm and welcoming expression had turned a little more stern because of it, but that was only temporary.

"Good morning, and what is your name, young man?"
Teddy's face went red when the professor took points from Fi as if it was somehow his fault or his punishment. For the first time, the boy had some clarity: at least Fi's eccentricity would cost Gryffindor, not Ravenclaw, which meant she wouldn't be disappointing their parents as much as she could have. But they didn't have to know. Teddy certainly wasn't going to tell on her.

He went to give his sister's hand an encouraging squeeze just as the professor addressed him, and he straightened up instinctively. "Good morning, professor. I'm-- Theodore. Theodore James. Teddy or TJ work fine, too. First year," he clarified, as opposed to a transfer she'd never met before.

The Ravenclaw was simply delighted when Yoyo made her entrance. His face fell slightly when the professor made her feet land firmly on the ground again, but when she settled into the seat next to him, he whispered, "That was wicked. Teach me later?" He wore bright, shiny eyes full of hope and curiosity, and for the first time that morning, he was excited for the day ahead.

Wait, so this woman was proficient in healing magic, runes, and herbology? Merlin. What couldn't she do? Where had she studied all these things? Teddy suddenly had a million questions for her, but now was not the time-- still, he was hanging onto every word she said and even jotted down some simple notes of instructions, like request key. A flush of crimson returned to his cheeks when the professor mentioned not touching the plants - he struggled to keep a stoic expression and not exchange a glance with Fi - and only when he turned around to survey the instructed area did he raise a palm to one cheek, then the other, willing them to tone it down.

There were... many, many possible answers to Beryl's question, and Teddy struggled to pick just one. It seemed obvious to point out some basic needs: quality of soil, selecting arrangements of plants with similar needs for sunlight and water, and so on, but one by one, the other students verbalized his thoughts - some of them even spieling with multiple answers all in one - and Teddy deflated a little, choosing instead to jot down some of the things people mentioned.

Then, just when it seemed like Beryl would soon stop accepting their responses, the first year's body betrayed him and a hand was up before he could stop it. "Err... depending on the kind of garden or purpose... we could do well to keep in mind... the aesthetic?" He sounded uncertain. "I mean, yeah, plants have all sorts of neat practical uses! But arrangement and use of colors and heights are important in a garden setting because... because it's an intangible." He wasn't sure he used that word correctly, but he pressed on, "I think we all... kind of, maybe, innately... have an appreciation for beauty? And beautiful things, in nature in particular... are good for the soul, you know?" The longer he spoke, the pinker his cheeks got and the more hurried his words became. Regret. That was regret he was feeling and he wanted the attention away from him. "So while all these practical needs with respect to the health of the plants need to be considered for them to flourish and blossom or whatever," he gestured around briefly with a hand, referencing everyone else's answers, "it can also be beneficial to our health, maybe, to consider the way it all looks. Might not always matter, and, you know, beauty can be found in the more chaotic, messy arrangements as beauty is a, uh, subjective thing... but... yeah." He grimaced.

Stop talking, James. Breathe.

Never again.

The warning about the greenhouses and good behaviour and everything that came with it only made Lucas feel more nervous than he already was. As if he was somehow going to do those things or had done those things. Maybe that's why his heart was going thump thump thump and his palms were starting to feel sweaty.

Right. Herbology. This was a lesson.

Turning around, he looked out at the garden, the empty garden. And he was supposed to imagine a layout for this garden? An ideal garden design? Uh. Well. Did he have one?? Not really. He wasn't exactly a garden type, unless sitting on the grass and having a picnic with his siblings counted. Preferably under the stars for him.

So. Gardens. He was going to answer the last question because it seemed like the easiest, and he didn't like the sound of talking about a particular garden design. The only problem was that there were a lot of answers coming in. Common sense ones: soils, room, sunlight. Everything. Answers that made him wish he'd thought of them sooner. Answers that-

Oh!

His hand went up in the air. "Um, the pests? What kind of pests might be attracted to that bit of land you want to turn into a garden and how to protect the plants from them." Pause. "Though, I guess, other pests could come running when they see," Sense?? "that there are certain plants there. So I guess this is a full-time operation....." His voice trailed off slightly while his mind started to wander and think and-

He shook his head. "Pests." There. Done.

Admittedly, Alessandro did not know that much about garden planning. Or anything at all. In his experience, there were people who were paid to handle all of those details. He listened intently to his peers as they raised point after point. Yes, he thought, shade and gnomes were probably important factors. As well as irrigation systems.

For himself, he didn't bother raising his hand. He didn't have much, if anything, important to add. He listened quietly and appreciated his classmates thoughtfulness.

Though, he would stick to gardeners.
