Default Astronomy II :: A Feeling Within Me, A Skyglow (Light Pollution)

Unlike the last seminar lesson, this was not held shortly before midnight. Similarly, Simran was dressed in her usual saree (a navy blue one made of shimmery gossamer). Everything seemed to be in order, including the fact that your professor is sitting on her table instead of at it. You've known her long enough by now to know that this is perfectly normal behaviour.

There are also trays on the desks, along with a bottle of liquid marked with "DO NOT DRINK". All will be explained in due time.

Have you brought your telescopes?

OOC: The lesson will begin in approximately 24 hours from the time of this post! Get yourselves settled in.

LESSON PROGRESSION:
QUESTION 1: What do astronomers even do?
MINI-ACTIVITY: Calibrate your cameras to measure skyglow!

These kinds of sciences were all about objectivity, but there were always variables that were hard to control. Adds a pinch of fun to learning new things, if he'd say so himself.

No telescopes yet, hm? He didn't mind. While he didn't actually own a personal camera, Drewett knew enough about it to know how to operate one. He even got to charm one for Evan as a Valentine's Day present almost two months ago. He knew its parts and their functions, which should be enough to get him through this mini activity. The Ravenclaw joined the rest of the class to the front and got a camera for himself. Drewett remained quiet as he proceeded to calibrate his camera, mentally ticking off the steps on the board along the way. With the camera positioned on the table as expected, he adjusted its focus until he was certain the white paper was no longer a blur through the viewfinder.

The sensitivity and the aperture settings confused him a little bit, as he didn't know what they technically meant. But Drewett was able to set the ISO to 200 and the aperture to f/2.8 after messing a little bit with the buttons and dials. After that, he made sure the camera was set to a low resolution. No idea why, but he was going to trust the process here.

So...he was all set now, right? With a click from the camera, Drewett took his first photo with the shutter speed set to 30, trying not to blink as he looked through the viewfinder. He looked at his shot, noting the blur in potential movement. He was just about to set the shutter speed to 15 when he noticed a young Slytherin (Austin) close by having trouble with his camera. The frown on the younger boy's also seemed to give him away. "Hey, buddy. Anything I can help you with?" the sixth year asked, a sheepish smile on his face.

Simran had been entirely distracted, and between her attention on the relic in her hand and trying to make sure that nobody broke anything, she had entirely missed Austin's raised hand. In fact, she'd only noticed something was amiss when Drewett Gunter made his way over to the first year asking for help.

A slow smile spread across her face, and once she was sure the first year would be quite alright with his problem, walked casually by the pair. "Five points to Ravenclaw." She did so love rewarding constructive interactions in her class.

"Are we ready?" she asked rhetorically, clapping her hands to get everyone's attention. Yes, this whole hand-clapping thing seemed to be her thing. She was not accepting questions on it. It had been her thing for fifty years. "Now we've got our base data for calibration, the real science can begin."

Ooooh, she was SO excited! Though, in hindsight, there was no real reason for them to have brought their telescopes after all. An oversight on her part, seeing as she'd simply forgotten to update the announcement from when she didn't think the camera would arrive on time. The abacus were necessary, though.

"I'd like for you to visit two locations in the school, where you think will have different levels of sky glow. When you're setting up your shot, make sure the moon is not in the picture. Same goes for artificial light fixtures." Merlin knew that the french school had those chandeliers in abundance. "Note that this doesn't mean you shouldn't be near a light source. Only that it shouldn't be in the picture."

"Make sure to take two pictures at each exposure, for each location. We want to reduce random error, so our results are more reliable. You have -- " she stopped to check her watch " -- twenty minutes."

"For those of you who make it back earlier, for extra credit, I can transfer any pictures you're particularly fond of to film, and there are developing solution and trays on the tables."

She wouldn't even complain if they asked to hold a mini photoshoot here in the Observatory amongst themselves. Really. It would be fun. She'd take some pictures herself, right here on the third floor.

OOC: Hello everyone and welcome to our main activity! We're taking pictures of the SKY. And ourselves, if your charries decide they wanna do that. Simran won't complain. You'll have about 4 days to complete this part of the lesson!

Please post your characters taking their pictures in THIS thread, for efficiency. You don't have to make multiple posts for different sites, but if you do, please number them!

Default Catch up: Camera Calibration
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

The furrowed brow from Sandhu initially made Claudine think that her answer was completely incorrect. But once the Astronomer explained, the first year understood why she received that reaction. However, she nodded and proceeded to make notes.

They were to be measuring the brightness of the sky? That was possible? The Snakette was mindblown to find this out and was really looking forward to getting started on the activity. So, they were going to be using cameras for this lesson… that made sense. Ignoring Blake, Claudine hopped off of her seat to retrieve a camera then quickly returned. Once there, she eyed the chalk doing it’s thing; the enchanted chalk was always fascinating to watch.

Then she was going ahead to have the calibration done. Claudine’s gaze flitted from her camera to the board and back repeatedly as she worked. A lot of fidgeting happened while she fixed the white paper over the entire view. Ugh. This was already frustrating.

Moving on.

More fidgeting happened until the camera was focused on the white paper. ISO 200… Claudine frowned as she studied the camera, trying to figure out what to do. All the while her frustration and annoyance levels grew; she already hated these stupid cameras. Finally she figured out the sensitivity, and some time later, the aperture. Lastly, the resolution. The girl, still feeling annoyed, began to take pictures at the allotted shutter speeds. The shutter speed step was repeated.

Drewett instantly noticed the younger boy's stammer, and it reminded the Ravenclaw of.....himself.

"Don't worry. It's pretty simple," the Ravenclaw replied, showing his own camera's screen to the Slytherin boy so he could get a closer look and pointing at the little box with the shutter speed values. "I-It's this thing right here. Just mess with this button..." Drewett demonstrated, pressing the corresponding button, and changed his first shutter speed value of 30 to 15. "...And tada." Nothing too complex, yeah?

Professor Sandhu's unexpected presence made Drewett look behind, as if he were a deer in the headlights. He had not expected the points either, so he sort of shifted awkwardly in place. "Thanks, professor..." he mumbled in response, very sheepishly.

He looked back at the younger boy to make sure he was doing it right, before Drewett continued to take more test shorts using the other shutter speed values. The Ravenclaw also noted all information on data tables in his notebook. But also? Did anyone know what was a great subject for photos? His girlfriend.

The sky's glow would work too. This was an activity he could get behind.

Austin nodded.
"Oh, okay."
He glanced up at the professor who had by now made it over to where they were. He smiled a bit at her and looked back at his camera. He then looked at the black board. What wad sensitivity? Austin glanced back at his camera and messed with the buttons a bit more. He jumped slightly when the camera went off. Welp, he just took a picture of his thigh. -_-...

Claudine sincerely hoped that this next activity was simpler and more fun than the previous. If it wasn’t, she had a feeling she would sit herself right down in the room and not leave. So, it was for this reason she listened closely to the instructions. Oh… this was easy. And she got to roam about for a little at night, with permission as well. Without hesitation, with the time noted in her mind and a smirk on her face, she swiftly headed out. Her first stop was the Slytherin Common Room aka that dratted broom closet. More precisely, she wanted to take a picture from her dorm because there were many a night when she admired the view from there.

The Snakette positioned the camera after making sure that the moon and no other light sources were in the frame, she snapped two pictures in quick succession. The camera wasn’t lowered when she was done. No, Claudine simply gazed at the sky through the lens.

The night sky always took her breath away.

Silent till this point, Gunnar had been somewhat confused by Professor Sandhu's first class question because.... wasn't this her job? As far as he knew, she didn't have another, separate, career, though admittedly he did not know that much about her, personally. But if one were to ask him what Sandhu did for a living, he'd say teach at Hogwarts. Or a displaced Hogwarts at Beauxbatons.

But he thought that was far too obvious an answer, or quite possibly a very wrong one as he thought the answer obvious, so he kept his mouth shut in favor of not looking stupid. His classmates offered some suggestions though, one of which included teaching, and he felt rather satisfied in his initial thought. And confusion aside, he was content with moving on with the activity.

Until he read the instructions on the board.

These numbers made little sense to him and he certainly did not know how to calibrate a camera with manual functions. Of course Gunnar had used simple point and shoot cameras in the past, but this seemed a little foreign. He stared at the back of the camera in his hands and looked at the little dials and numbers on it as he walked back to his seat. No one else seemed to have any trouble besides one of the first years, so Gunnar wasn't about to draw attention to himself and admit he didn't know what he was doing. Especially when everyone else did. But seeing Drew helping out the confused first year, Gunnar inched his chair a bit closer to the Ravenclaw, trying to overhear and garner some information.

Or maybe he should just start fiddling with the buttons and dials. He'd probably figure out soon enough on his own. Gunnar looked through the camera to view the white paper, then turned the lens slightly until it appeared focused. Okay... now the ISO200 part? Not sure about that one, but he started pressing buttons to try to figure it out. Oh... there it was. It took him a little while of pressing things, but he thought he had the settings as instructed on the board. At least for the first shot.

What... ready? No. He had taken so long trying to figure out the settings that he didn't really have time to do the calibration pictures. But, class was moving on, so he picked up his camera as he stood, thinking a moment of where he should take pictures.

OH FINALLY. Literally Carsyn may have burst from calibration monotony if Professor Sandhu hadn't decided now was the time to move on... The place Carsyn REALLY wanted to observe the sky glow was from the quidditch pitch because like, honestly was there any better place on the grounds? But she wasn't sure if they were allowed near the pitch given the fact of no quidditch this term which left the fourth year no choice but to just head to a generic spot on the grounds. Twenty minutes. Meant she had to leave now. Because maybe if she had time at the end she could do the transfer to film thing. Or even take some selfies. Or some pictures of a certain Slytherin Prefect who Carsyn was SURE would look amazing on film. No time to think about that though because first, she needed to get to the grounds.

Camera in hand, Carsyn nodded briefly off to the professor and departed.

Checking her watch when she arrived at moderately dark spot on the grounds, five minutes had already passed. Click. Click. Click. Snapping several pictures of the sky - no moon hopefully as that was over the lake and she wasn't aimed over that direction at all - Carsyn glanced at her watch again. Another five minutes. Back to the observatory, she supposed the third floor would be high enough for some sky pictures. It wouldn't be like the Hogwarts Astronomy Tower, but then again nothing really was comparable to Hogwarts here except the familiarity of her fellow hogwartians and familiar professors.

Despite the healthier food here, the lack of stairs here was really slowing her down with physical activity. But she made it and five minutes left to take a few pictures of the sky from this level in the castle and maybe a few of those selfies if Sandhu didn't object.

The first year managed to pull herself together in time to glance at her watch to see that she had spent ten minutes in her dorm. There was still enough time for her to run out to the grounds, and run she did. Claudine didn’t care if she was stopped by any Professor as she was quite sure that she would be able to wiggle her way out of the situation.

Fortunately, no wiggling was required as she made it out to the grounds within five minutes. Straight for the Rose Garden she went where she paused at the entrance to repeat the exact steps of her earlier actions of snapping the pictures. This time, Claudine wasted no time in returning to the Astronomy lesson.

She made it back with about one minute to spare.

Very pleased with herself, the Snakette took her seat once more, her mind once again fixed on that view from her dorm.

So this really was photography based? The experiment part intrigued him but the photography part? Not so much. He was sure that any pictures he would take were going to turn out to be as good as his defence skills - which was not very.

But they only had twenty minutes and he had a lot of walking to do, from the sounds of it.

Grabbing his camera, Lucas made his way out of the room. It was only when he was walking down the corridor that he realised that, uh........ he didn't know where he was going. Sandhu had said to take pictures of two examples of skyglow at two different locations in the school. But WHERE those two locations should be, he didn't know. And worst of all, everyone near him seemed to be walking with purpose and he didn't want to look like he was LOST so.......

........ yeah, he was going anywhere, trying to look like he knew where he wanted to go. Maybe somewhere that was empty so he could take pictures in peace without worrying about pretty much anything that came with this activity. For an unknown reason, he didn't want someone to SEE him taking pictures. It felt...... weird. Like he shouldn't be doing it, even if it was for a class.

He didn't know how long he was walking but eventually, Lucas came upon an empty corridor. One that was very close to the Defence room they usually had their lessons in. Approaching a nearby window, he held his camera up and looked through it, trying to aim it at....... anything. Anywhere. Maybe the view of the sky in the distance with some of the grounds added in? Did that count?

......... He took the pictures anyways.

With another location to get to, he had no time to check whether the pictures turned out any good. He was just going to have to trust that his, uh, photography skills weren't as bad as he thought they were. Besides, he had no way of checking to see because he had no idea how to check with these cameras. They were OLD.

His next location? Outside. It would be a nice contrast, wouldn't it? Because out here, the only artificial lights were the ones shining out of windows. Maybe he could see if they affected the images. Do his own experiment, in a way. But he didn't have a lot of time so he didn't walk very far from the castle doors. And his pictures were even worse than before: pictures of the sky with the tops of some trees added in. Trees that just looked like darker shapes against a dark sky. It didn't really matter, did it?

Shrugging, he glanced down at his watch and-

............

..................

Uhh........ he had five minutes left? FIVE?!

Oh merlin.

Turning around, Lucas started sprinting back into the castle and up the stairs to the Astronomy classroom. His lack of physical activity meant that he started to become very tired very quickly - which was not surprising, really - but he tried his best to ignore that. Maybe it really was lucky that they were at Beauxbatons and he didn't have to sprint up all those stairs for all those floors at Hogwarts. Stairs that moved and had trick steps and other things.

Comeoncomeoncomeon.......

At the very last minute - and breathing very heavily - the Gryffindor burst into the room, gripping onto his camera as tightly as he could. He tried his best to smile at Sandhu and look as normal as possible, and NOT as though he'd done all his year's exercise in one go. Yeah, totally normal. He was just going to go back to his seat and sit down and take a much needed break.

After making sure the young Slytherin was all good without him, Drewett gave him a smile and then proceeded to the first place he could think of that was high up and had an excellent view of the sky. The owlery. He was a frequent visitor, so he knew fairly well that it would work.

Following the small crowd of students pouring out of the observatory, the Ravenclaw made a beeline for the owlery. Not inside, of course, but the elevation from the other floors were a plus. Drewett had set his camera preferences back to a shutter speed of 30. Once he was there, he looked around for a place where he could get a good angle of the sky.

He wasn't exactly the best person to ask to take photos, but guess this will do. Drewett took shots using the various shutter speeds, and noticed the differences in the shots. More crisp photos, but also differences in the lighting. Sort of. He honestly didn't know how to explain it. He was out here doing his job. Twenty-six photos done.

Why couldn't he take a photo of his girlfriend instead though?

Anyway.

Drewett figured he could take equally great photos from the grounds as well, thinking perhaps a majority of his classmates would be out there. He was specifically on his usual route whenever he'd felt like talking a walk. He had that at least committed to memory. It was the perfect photoshoot opportunity for many of those who would prefer selfies, especially by the rose garden. He made his way there, taking a moment to enjoy the starry night sky. So comforting. He wouldn't mind just staying there, but he had a task to finish.

Angling the camera, the Ravenclaw took more shots in, again, different shutter speeds. Another twenty-six photos. A total of fifty-two. Whether he did the task right was another story, but when he realized he didn't have much time left to return to the observatory, Drewett wasted no time to make it there on time. Which he did, although he was late by a minute. He was....panting. Also? Stairs.

Drewett Gunters did not run. But he was here! He needed air.

The twenty minutes were up before Simran really had a chance to do much other than her own fiddling about and helping the odd student or two who was as unaccustomed to such ancient muggle technology as she expected them to be. As she'd expected, most were almost, if not completely punctual, but she waited for the stragglers all the same.

Once everyone was back, she called the group to attention with a clap of the hands. "Now, as you might have noticed, skyglow is actually a form of light pollution, caused by proximity to artifical light sources while stargazing."

"The other primary forms of light pollution are glare – excessive brightness that causes visual discomfort, light trespass – light falling where it is not intended or needed, and clutter – bright, confusing and excessive groupings of light sources."

"This affects not only our ability to observe the night sky, but also to measure it, which is why observations are commonly done in more rural areas where there isn't as much interference."

"Skyglow, especially in large cities, disrupts the natural day-night pattern and shifting the delicate balance of our environment. The negative effects of the loss of this inspirational natural resource might seem not to be a big deal, but a growing body of evidence links the brightening night sky directly to measurable negative impacts including excessive energy consumption, disruption to the ecosystem and wildlife, and not only has an impact on human psychology but is a carcinogen."

"For homework, I'd like to see essays on light pollution and its impacts. First years will write a foot-long essay, second years a foot and a half, and so forth. Sixth and seventh years will be expected to include whether or not light pollution is polarised, and the effects of that on the magical and mundane alike. This is due in a week, so you've got plenty of time."

And on that note. "Thank you all for coming. Save any pictures you'd like to keep on the camera and I'll develop them for you tomorrow. Otherwise, please put the cameras back in the boxes on your way out."

"I'll see you all in class."

OOC: Simran will be around for the next 12 or so hours before I close the lesson, if your characters have questions or if you want to post leaving the room. Thanks for coming, everyone!

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

How interesting.

Claudine had never really thought that much of the why the clearness of a view might be hampered. Pollution was definitely a huge factor. She made notes while Sandhu went on, thinking it was a pity that the night sky’s view had to be disturbed by human habits. The Snakette intended to write a very strong essay on light pollution and made up her mind to get started on that essay tomorrow evening.

Claudine wanted her pictures saved so she left her camera where it was, adding a little tag with her name and year before leaving the camera on her desk.

“Good night, Professor,’’ the first year said on her way out.

All she wanted to do now was to sleep.
