Quiz Bowl!

You enter the Astronomy classroom, but does it really look like the astronomy classroom anymore? The desks and chairs have been arranged into what is meant to mimic the Great Hall -- with four long rows of tables, with chairs on both sides to facilitate discussion. Where the Staff Dais would be is Professor Sandhu's desk, with her perched atop it, looking rather gleeful at the prospect of her newly approved club.

There are three buzzers on each row, just within reach of anyone who's supposed to be hitting that buzzer anyway.

Take a seat, you know where you should go.

OOC: HI GUYS AND WELCOME TO QUIZ BOWL! We'll begin in approximately 24 hours. I'm excited, are you?

Ginevra 07-18-2019 09:47 AM

This quiz bowl thing sounded like such a brilliant and fun little activity and so Daisy didn't hesitate in entering the Astronomy classroom. "Hello, Professor Sandhu," she greeted with a weary grin which was due to this chaotic mist as she sat down at the Hufflepuff table, eagerly awaiting further arrivals.

spiral_star 07-18-2019 02:44 PM

Rosie finally made it to the astronomy tower and as she entered the classroom her eyes widened in surprise. There are buzzers and the tables are arranged quite differently. Not that it is a bad thing. Just an observation. She walked and found herself a seat, although not many students are there yet. "Hello professor" she greeted rather shyly. She smiled to the girl next to her before taking a seat then arranging her stuff.

There were many things Nina enjoyed, but pretended not to. Academia was at the top of the list. See, she would never willingly join a club centered around the subject. And so, no, she did not join Quiz Bowl and she never had any intention of participating in the events. She was, however, interested in how the others would fare and there was a tiny part of her that did want the satisfaction of knowing whether or not she could answer the questions posed at her peers.

And so she made a point to blend in with the rest of the students slipping into the room, following behind a crowd so that she didn't stick out like a sore thumb. But while the others went to sit at their respective tables, Nina drew herself over to the far wall.

She was not participating. She was a spectator.

One that had very high hopes for her Slytherin classmates. Nina crossed her arms as she waited for the event to begin, her gaze fixed on the still empty table of her own house. Surely her peers would file in soon. This would be utterly shameful otherwise. Again, not that she would ever say anything. As far as anyone else was concerned Nina's only competitive interest was Quidditch (read: she hated Quidditch). Woooooo! Go Józef!

Soo..while the whole nature of a quiz bowl was really not Eloise's thing. She was here and ready to have fun since she was stuck in the castle and was running out of things to amuse herself with. The redhead had to hand it to Sandhu the room did look cool this way. Still she was not hear to take this at all seriously so get ready for joke and troll answers galore.

Could she call her Quizmaster???

"Quiz..Professor Sandhu, do we just sit at our table or stand?"

Maybe sit was the best option.

Seems only boring people where standing

nicole black 07-18-2019 04:12 PM

Maxie had a lot of pent up feelings and emotions. He desperately needed something to help get all of these feelings, and thoughts out.

And so, here he was. Ready to watch... whatever this was.

lazykitty 07-18-2019 05:11 PM

Archer would've been here even if there wasn't a murderous fog of doom spreading around the school that she needed her mind taken off of. Why? Random bits of trivia was her jam! So she had no problem plopping herself down at the Hufflepuff table, right in reach of the buzzer of course. "Hey, professor!"

Was she ready? Of course she was!

hermionesclone 07-19-2019 12:08 AM

Lucas wasn't really excited about this, uh, Quiz Bowl? Yeah. He had a funny feeling he wasn't going to do very well in it anyways unless Sandhu decided to ask only Astronomy questions. Or questions he just knew the answer to, then he might speak up. But otherwise, he had no intention of really answering.

So why was he here? Because it was in the Astronomy classroom and he liked this tower.

And he was bored.

Wandering in, the boy felt his heart sink as soon as he saw the setup. They had to split up into houses? That was....... probably fair. But seeing the empty Gryffindor table only made him feel even worse, especially since he realised that he, Lucas Dakest, was probably going to be the one answering.

Oh merlin oh no oh no. No no no.

Approaching the empty table, he sat down, uh, somewhere close to one of the buzzers but not too close. Just in case someone else decided to come and join him.

Couldn't he just pretend he was in another house? The Sorting Hat did almost put him in Hufflepuff.

SneakySeverusSnape 07-19-2019 03:20 AM

Analiese was very excited about the Quiz Bowl. Anyone who saw the way she was arriving at the Astronomy Classroom would think the same. She sat down at the Ravenclaw table, in reach of the one of the buzzers. She kindly acknowledged Professor Sandhu and greeted her. "Hello, Professor!" She eagerly waited for the Quiz Bowl to start.

DuckyLinJi 07-19-2019 02:18 PM

The quiz bowl announcement on the noticeboard had intrigued Dorian's interest. To be able to use his knowledge what he had learned so far AND be able to win prizes? Count him in.

He entered the room which had been built to mimic the Great Hall tables and he was glad to spot a few Ravenclaws there already. But first things first. He walked to the Professor and greeted her with an "Hello, Professor" before he launched right in to his question."Can we all participate or are there assigned students for each House?" he asked. He was cool with just watching but he was eager to be part of it.

Govoni 07-19-2019 03:20 PM

Honestly, a quizbowl seemed sort of problematic for Aaron and his brain, but he was never one to spit at a challenge. And, in all fairness, who didn't need the distraction right now?

The castle had morphed into a chaotic and scary place, and was not at all suited to Aaron's gentle, loving nature. Needless to say, pretending to be strong for the masses was getting kinda difficult. Necessary, but difficult.

Anyway, he was here, slipping in beside Archer at the Puffer table. If just to give his support? If the Sixth Year happened to answer a question or two, that seemed like a successful day to him. "Hey, guys."

laurange 07-19-2019 09:54 PM

Oh, lovely! The children were arriving! Simran clapped her hands together in excitement and positively radiated said glee. Yeah, it was probably entirely apparent that she had something Very Sandhu-esque of her. Was this going to be a regular quiz bowl?

Did Simran Sandhu even know what the word regular meant?

First through the door was Daisy Swann, a girl Simran had always found particularly sharp. She was quite eager to see how Miss Swann would fare in today's event.

"Hello, dear. Had a good day?"

Rosie Abram followed not long after, and Simran gave the third year a warm smile. This wasn't one that she had pegged for the quiz-bowl-type, but she was always happy to be wrong, and always happy for the unexpected happening.

"Hello, Miss Abram."

Simran noted Nina Castillo's entry with a small surge of triumph rushing through her veins. Proud Grandma Vibes right here.

Even if the girl hadn't greeted her. And wasn't sitting down. She did know she could do that, didn't she?

"Take a seat, Ms Castillo."

Was Miss Fairfield quizzing her? On one hand, Simran was absolutely, on all levels, here for it. On the other hand, however, she was very very surprised.

And took a second to blink before the question processed in her mind.

"Sit, dear. That's why I gave you chairs."

The young Anderson-Belfort's arrival was noted, but since he left her no greeting, she gave him only a nod of acknowledgement. For now. He seemed to be concentrated on something and far be it from her to break that concentration.

Archer Calrissian was your classic member of Quiz Bowl and Simran adored that about her. Quiz Bowl was one of her favourite things about Hogwarts, back in her day, and it was the best way to show off her random mental trivia collection.

"Hello, Miss Calrissian. Ready for today?"
The girl certainly looked it.

If he answered questions he knew the answer to, he would be doing exactly what a Quiz Bowl was designed for, in Simran's professional opinion. And also in her grandmotherly one. Though neither of her granddaughters seemed as fond of trivia as she was.

Perhaps she'd corrupt Jasmine and turn her into a trivia sensation. That seemed like a good plan.

Meanwhile, have courage, Master Dakest. Someone would join you eventually, she was sure of it. Simran even gave him a conspirational wink of encouragement. She'd love to sit with him -- that was her seat back in the day, after all -- but she had to run this show. Tragic, really.

"Miss Senchuri!" she greeted, as the Ravenclaw entered. And sat right in perfect reach of a buzzer. Simran was more than a little proud about that random fact.

Of course, all the seats were in reach of a buzzer, but as everyone knew: some seats were better than others. Nobody watched a movie one row from the screen. It was a sure way to injure oneself.

The inquisitive type. She was fond of those. Not that she was surprised, considering Dorian Katharos' sorting into Ravenclaw, but these things were not always a package deal.

"You may all answer, of course!"
she nodded, dead serious now. "As long as you're the one that hit the buzzer."

Why would anyone create an extracurricular that discouraged participation, anyway?

Simran tried not to furrow her eyebrows at the usually sweet prefect's entirely blatant ignoring of the fact that she was sitting right there. Why? Because she was eighty-five years old and not that petty.

Was she?

Of course not.

Anyway, a quick stretch gave her a glance at her watch that made her wiggle with excitement. It was time to begin! Clapping her hands (as was her way) to get everyone's attention, she rose to her feet.

"Welcome, everyone, to Quiz Bowl," she said, taking a look at the participants gathered. Not a bad assortment, if she did say so herself. "For starters, I'd like you to take everything you know about quiz bowls and throw them out the window -- at least for today."

"Today, instead of answering correctly, your task is to be as outrageously wrong as humanly possible. Troll answers only. Most outrageous one gets the points for the question." Everyone follow? She could almost taste the mixed feelings. Like a bag of sour Skittles.

"Of course, we'll have more normal quiz bowls in the future," but normal was overrated. "And I will give you the correct answer at the end of each round, but I just want you to think creatively for today. Now, we'll start with something easy. Are we ready?"

Of course they were. You had to be ready for anything at any time in this school.

"For ten points: In the year 1991, Harry Potter and his companions destroyed the Philosopher's Stone, what was and remains to this day, a stunning feat of alchemy. Who was the creator of this stone and at what age did they die?"

OOC: WE'VE BEGUN. Don't worry, there won't be penalties for arriving late as this isn't a lesson, but feel free to pretend your character has been here all along. Don't forget: Troll Answers Only.

nicole black 07-19-2019 11:14 PM

Maxie remained silent even as Aaron (and others) arrived. He was thinking, you see. Thinking hard. He had come here today with the intention of competing but now that it was actually happening.. well, his stomach was in all sorts of knots. The irony, considering Maxie performed far more threatening feats before the entire school.

But that was flying.

This was speaking.

And Maxie didn't do that whole speaking thing very well.

Maxie's attention was pulled from his conundrum as Professor Simran spoke laying out the rules of this quiz bowl with all her usual cheeriness. How anyone could remain so content and happy with students missing and an uncertain doom hanging over their head... Maxie had very little idea. He flushed, the first question would be so very easy to twist and before the very competitive Hufflepuff could stop himself he let out an answer. "F-Frankenstein. D-doctor Frankenstein created the stone." He paused, astonished by his own words. ".... H-he was 25 w-when h-h-he died."

ArianaBlack 07-20-2019 12:21 AM

"I'm only watching, Professor," was her reply as she stayed leaning against the wall and watching as more and more of her classmates filed into the room and took places at their respective House tables. She waited with baited breath as the final student hurried inside and Professor Sandhu began to address the room. The Slytherin's only real reaction came when their Astronomy Professor announced that they would not be giving real answers.

Nina was entirely disappointed to say the least.

She would have walked straight out of the room if she didn't think she'd draw attention to herself for doing so. How was there any point to giving incorrect answers? The purpose behind quiz bowl was to educate. To award students for their knowledge. Awarding points to incorrect answers only taught anyone that their lack of studying was not an issue. And. It. Was. No wonder Hogwarts' was beginning to fail as an academic institution. There was no way they would let this happen at Beauxbatons.

Nina Castillo did not like this rule. She did not like it at all. Her frown only grew when the younger Hufflepuff kid decided to buy into the silly 'game'. Why was he entertaining this? It was ridiculous.

SneakySeverusSnape 07-20-2019 12:28 AM

Be outrageously wrong? An interesting way to do a quiz bowl. The first question was easy to twist and Analiese easily answered it. "The person who created the stone was King Arthur. He was 9 when he died." She was slightly astonished by her own words

Govoni 07-20-2019 04:38 AM

Aaron would've felt terrible at any slight his behavior might've made. But he wasn't aware, and he still liked Professor Sandhu well enough, anyway. In fact, he was happy to be here with them right now.

...but the prefect had to admit. He was thrown by the request that they give wrong answers. Not just wrong ones...outrageously wrong. So, the tall tales needed to fly? That was an interesting twist to keep it exciting (and entertaining).

He really liked Max's answer, though. In support, Aaron reached around and nudged the kid's shoulder. As if to say 'Good one!'.

DuckyLinJi 07-20-2019 07:02 AM

Dorian walked to the Ravenclaw side table after thanking the professor for her answer and he sat down near one of the buzzers. Now that he knew he was able to participate he was all for it. He turned his attention to the front of the room when the Professor explained the rules and a deep frown appeared on the sixth year's face.

He was all for creative thinking, actually if he were ever to become a professor (mediwizard was his goal for now but futures could change) he'd encourage it but wasn't the whole purpose of a quizbowl to prove and share your academical knowledge and being rewarded for giving the right answer? Why did they have to give out wrong answers? This didn't make any sense to him.

But. He also liked winning. And if his House had to win by playing this ridiculous rule, so be it. He sat more upright but did not slam the buzzer. He'd let Analiese take this answer as she had already pressed it and gave her a quick thumbs up.

griffin 07-20-2019 07:54 AM

For the record, sour skittles were a great way to treat low blood sugar. A troll quiz bowl? THIS WAS EVEN BETTER THAN A NORMAL QUIZ BOWL! Normal quiz bowls were overrated because you had to actually know stuff for those. She would probably have just given troll answers for a normal quiz bowl anyway because there was no way she actually knew the real answers to these questions. Cordelia slammed the buzzer forcefully with her outstretched palm when the professor asked the first question. ”I made it in a potions accident which also opened up a wormhole in the space-time continuum and I died three years ago when a mountain troll decided to eat me as a light snack.” Obviously, her troll answer had to involve a troll somehow. As for the real answer? A philosopher made it and the second part was a trick question because he never died. That was what she thought, anyway, and the reason that troll bowls were better.

The answer to Maxie's question, had he ever voiced it to Simran, was that she was extremely practiced in the art of fake-it-till-you-make-it. It would not do for Professors to lose their heads in front of students -- if they did, where would the children turn to when they felt panicked themselves?

Her job was to listen, and to provide as normal an environment for them as she could. And right now, also to run this Quiz Bowl. "I like that," she said, nodding. He was setting the tone pretty well, if she did say so herself. Simran Sandhu was impressed. "Very well done, Master Anderson-Belfort."

"Doctor Frankenstein was a necromancer, did you know?"

It was ridiculous, Nina Castillo. That was the point. The first gathering of a Quiz Bowl couldn't possibly expect everyone to be prepared with trivia -- it was asking too much from a group of students already stressed out.

Have no fear, though, a regular Quiz Bowl was in the cards for not too long after.

As for Beauxbatons? Simran always had a deep distaste for their pompousness. Not everything had to be taken dead seriously, you see?

"King Arthur," she mused, mulling the answer over in her mind. Not a terrible one, but certainly not as good as the Hufflepuff entry. "Not bad, not bad at all."

She'd think about this, yes.

Entertainment was the goal here, Master Botros. To give the students something to talk about that wasn't the mist. It was always a good idea not to take oneself too seriously, that they couldn't participate in a Troll Bowl.

Troll Bowl. She liked that name.

ANOTHER GOOD ANSWER. Simran was impressed. Very impressed. She had a pretty talented batch of students here. "Oh, my," she gasped, eyes wide, and then burst into laughter. The trolliest of Troll Answers. Complete with an actual mountain troll.

"Mountain trolls aren't terribly bright, it's such a sad way to go. I love it."

"This is a tough one," she said, thoughtful. After a pause, she flicked her wand at the board, animating a piece of chalk. "Unfortunately, there can only be one winner, and I have to give this win to Hufflepuff for being just wrong enough to suspend belief while being pretty hilarious."

Sorry, Miss Winklebleck. She really did love your answer. Maybe you'd get the next one?

"The correct answer was Nicholas Flamel, an alchemist, who died aged 696." For the record, and because she promised. NOW, MOVING ON. "For the next ten points: What are the Five Cs of Potion-Brewing?"

Ginevra 07-20-2019 04:19 PM

When Daisy heard the question, she quickly hit the buzzer and said the first strange answer that came into her mind. "Chocolate, crumpets, cheese, cherries and cola are the five Cs.

Hopefully, that was an okay answer. Usually, she was determined to say the correct answer so this was a challenge for her.

griffin 07-20-2019 04:53 PM

Cordelia was slightly salty that the point went to someone else even though the professor said she loved her answer. This was fun, but Cordelia wanted to win this thing. Sarcastic and sassy comments were her specialty, so trolling everyone should be easy. Nicholas Flamel? Never heard of him. Well, maybe in history of magic but who paid attention in that class anyway? As for the next question, Cordelia once again had no idea what all the real answers were but she was pretty sure one was a cauldron. She slammed the buzzer for Gryffindor. ”There are actually seven Cs.” Like the seven seas, get it? ”Cauldron cakes, confusion, calamity, concern, crying, and capitulation.” Cauldron cakes was one item but counted as two because of the double C. The rest of the steps more or less represented her approach to difficult homework assignments. Don’t know what to do, get frustrated, throw a fit, give up. Cordelia Winklebleck was a quitter on things she didn’t want to do in the first place, but never on the things she genuinely cared about.

He was dissapointed that the point went to Hufflepuff if he had to be honest and he wondered what kind of reason beside an ridiculous answer it would take to earn a point.

Before he knew it, the second question was asked and he reached forward and slammed the button for Ravenclaw "consideration, constructive, eeeehh..." Merlin's Beard it was difficult to come up with words starting with a C at the top of his head! "Ehm ..oh! Confidence, connection and uh...." just one more word... "Cabbage!" ...what?

Drewett had been there all along, watching how the game was going. He had been personally excited about a quiz bowl and maybe then he'd have an interesting outlet for all the sometimes useless information and trivia his brain had absorbed from all the years of reading he'd down. He thought about watching the quiz bowl for a few rounds to see if it would put him on a competitive mood.

Except, perhaps, this wasn't the typical quiz bowl one would expect. Was it? Drewett wouldn't have expected that from Professor Sandhu. She always seemed to have a knack for adding an interesting twist to her lessons. He shouldn't have been surprised with the twist right there either.

Also??? Dia??? What kind of an answer was that? Drewett gave the younger Gryffindor a look from where he was seated, at the end of the Ravenclaw table. It was pretty ridiculous in a good way. Creative. Out of this world. Not one he'd have expected from the second year, if he were to be honest. It was also quite...what would the word be for it? Alarming? Something like that. Let's be real, though. Maxie's answer was a nice one too. Deserving of the win.

Drewett briefly glanced at Nina and nodded towards her as an invitation to sit. He wasn't joining, but he wasn't also going to stand there in the corner. This wasn't his type of quiz bowl. But that didn't mean he wouldn't be part of the audience.

Simran was quite certain that she'd scheduled this for after dinner, but after hearing Miss Swann's answer, she could swear she heard her stomach growl. Hopefully none of the students heard that, it'd be terribly embarassing. "They sound delicious, Miss Swan."

The five Cs of unhealthy eating. Man, did she miss junk food.

Simran did get it, actually, and had to cover her mouth as a wide grin split her face, wrinkles now in full view. The pride in her heart, that this kid didn't get discouraged -- too much to bear. Also the pride at her actual answer was pretty big too.

"Definitely a potion-brewing mood, Miss Winklebleck."

Potions was never her best subject in school.

Well, Simran couldn't have told you this at the beginning of Class, Mr Katharos, but the key is to be as crazy as possible while just barely remaining within the realm of possibility. Just wild enough that it might almost be a serious answer to the question, that was the ideal.

She was proud to hear the answer, though she couldn't at all relate to any confidence nor connection during potion-brewing. The last C, however, did elicit a bark of laughter.

"And cabbage, of course. The most important C of potion-brewing."

She was keeping an eye on you, Mr Gunter. Watching you. Aaaaaalways watching.

And also grateful that someone else was trying to convince Ms Castillo to sit down.

"Now, as I'm sure you all know, the actual 5Cs of Potion-Brewing are Cleanliness, content, color, concentration, and care." That being said, she did have to pick just one house to give the point to, and there was really no question of which one that would be. "I loved all of these, and I'm proud of you all for thinking so quickly. However, congratulations, Miss Winklebleck. You've earned the first ten points to Gryffindor."

"Don't panic, there's still a lot more questions to be asked," she said, eyeing the Slytherin table especially. Some input from them would be nice. "Try to still keep the answer at least somewhat related to the questions, dears."

"For ten points -- What destroyed the diadem of Ravenclaw?"

And with that, the board was updated once more. Would anyone say Deez Knuts?

Really? Gryffindor scored a point? Come on! The Professor had even laughed at his cabbage answer..

Dorian sat back down at the table after having pushed the button earlier and was frowning. For someone who thought this quizbowl was a joke he realised that he was rather enjoying himself. Not that he would admit this of course.

He looked over at the Slytherin table. None of them had participated yet and honestly, he couldn't blame them. This was pointless anyway.... But the moment the next question was asked he jumped up , reached for the button and slammed it a couple of times in case the button didn't work. "I DID!" he yelled and cleared his throat a second later before speaking more calmly. "With fiendfyre cause the Ravenclaw ghost refused to tell me where the bathroom was. So i snatched it and blew it up as revenge cause why not right?..." he laughed as he sat back down. "Really should have told me where that bathroom was" he added with a mutter.

Merlin's Beard he wasn't going to lose braincells over this was he.....?
