Default DADA Lesson 1 - Shhh

The first thing you'll notice as you enter classroom 104 is that it doesn't at all resemble a classroom. For those of you more familiar with Headmaster Trent's teaching methods, this may not come as much of a surprise, not especially since the notice did mention it being a practical lesson. There isn't a desk or chair in sight.

What is present? Cushions. Padding. You've more or less walked into a fully padded, white room. The Headmaster is by the door waiting to greet you and ready to slam the door shut the moment the clock strikes 11 am.

The room is rather comfy. It's the sort you'd find in a soundproof environment. The floors, the ceiling, every crevice and corner is covered in spongy absorbent material.

Step lively, there's a lot to do today!

OOC: Welcome to the first DADA lesson of the term everyone!! Opening just a little earlier because I won't be home later like I thought I would be <3 Don't forget to read the classroom rules before posting. I'll have the first question up in 24 hours

The lesson hasn't started yet

CLASS HAD BEGUN!

In this lesson, I want you all to find an appreciation for silence and the silent approach to things."

Some may have already gotten the gist of where the lesson was going. Either way, "I have a question. Think about it. All answers are welcome. It's not something you'll find in the textbooks that I hope you didn't tug along with you but rather you'll find the answer in daily experiences or the experiences of others. What are things that can be accomplished silently? Can you name something that requires silence in order to be effectively accomplished or keep you safe?"

He could think of at least a dozen things right off the bat but it would be interesting to see where their brains took them and how widely they were allowing themselves to think.

The room’s lack of color and the fact that it apparently muffled sound kinda put Sammy on edge. Not to mention too many people in the room were perky. What did Sammy have against perky people? Well, he didn’t trust them. He gave a side glance to some of the people in the room as the Professor began talking. He still didn't know anyone, well besides Eleanor and she was on the other side of the room. Sammy was purposefully attempting to stay away from her so she couldn't accused him of giving her bruises the next time she tripped over her own feet.

He slowly raised his hand to answer the question. He had already gone through some DADA theory at Koldovstoretz and thought he knew what the professor was looking for. Normally, he wouldn’t have answered, but some of his classmates’ answers were rather…silly. ”It’s important in dueling,” he answered when the professor looked his way. ”Some people can perform spells without speaking. It keeps your opponent on guard because they have no way to know what you’re going to use or do next.”

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

Observant as he was, he definitely noticed the young Ravenclaw (Anna) mimicking his posture somewhere next to him. His lips curled into an amused smile but he kept quiet because the door shut closed and the lesson begun.

A soundproof room. Nice. That was sarcasm by the way.

As the others answered the question, Dorian thought that there were some really good answers in them. The answer that the Hufflepuff Prefect provided made him let out a laugh which he quickly cut off by holding a hand against his mouth. But in all seriousness, she WAS telling the truth.

"Bird watching. Because the slightest movement might startle the creatures. Or robbing a house, wouldn't want the owners to wake up just when you're stealing something right?" he said as he pushed himself off of the wall to get closer to the gathered group.

She felt too boxed in by the cushioned material that seemed to cover every surface of this room. It wasn’t a pleasant feeling for her, being trapped in a soundproof room. Cordelia was fairly certain that there were at least a few other students in this room who would also be uncomfortable in this environment. Maybe the purpose of the soundproof walls was so that no one would hear them screaming for help as the headmaster tortured them. She didn’t really trust the man, or any of the professors for that matter, not to try to hurt them. Hogwarts didn’t really have the best safety record. It was eerie, the silence. Too quiet. Cordelia couldn’t stand complete silence. ”Silence leaves you alone with your thoughts. Or, if something or someone dangerous was trying to find you, being quiet might keep you safe.” In her experience, being left to think by herself wasn’t always a good thing. Now wasn’t the time to draw attention to how much she didn’t like complete silence though. The safety aspect of this was probably where the lesson was going. That part was actually important.

Arts TRANSPONSTER!

Practical DADA lessons were always the best kind of DADA lessons because Anna could finally enjoy learning for a change. So she was excited for this one and was wondering all types of craziness they could do in a padded room.

Only... they started discussing silence and when it was important. Anna's first answer was going to be hiding, but the Slytherin prefect beat her to it. Archer's answer made her laugh and nod her head in agreement. That girl was actually funny, maybe it wouldn't be so terrible to go on patrols after all.

When it came to her turn, she almost ran out of options because she was too lazy to think up an outside-of-the-box answer. "Sleeping." The Gryffindor shrugged.

That couldn't possibly be why the Headmaster looked so happy... could it?

Avalon liked Headmaster Trent already. He seemed to be pretty casual with his approach to teaching, and Avalon appreciated professors that used a practical method of instruction. She listened intently as her classmates gave her answers, stifling a giggle at some of the more silly answers. She had a bit of trouble thinking of a response that hadn't already been said, but she figured she could elaborate on some of the answers that were being tossed around. Avalon tentatively raised her hand. "Silence is important when you are trying to remain unnoticed. It could be as simple as playing a game of hide-and-seek, or as complex as battling dark magic and hiding from your pursuer." She paused, glancing at the headmaster for some sort of validation that she was on the right track before continuing. "But I think that silence is more than just not speaking. It requires concentration and control over your movements. Not talking is no use when it comes to hiding from someone if you're trudging across the floor or otherwise drawing attention to yourself." Well, that would have to do. It certainly wasn't the most unique or creative answer, but Avalon thought that it would be an important addition to the conversation.

What was silence good for? Plenty of things as far as this Slytherin was concerned. And he was just about to offer an answer when he heard the words of a younger Ravenclaw (Missa). Didn't know her personally, and wasn't sure of the name, but knew she was one of his sister's dorm mate.

"Sure, that works," he started as an expansion on her comment about silence avoiding an argument. "Until someone casts a spell at your back because you refuse to argue anymore." He cast a smirk in the direction of one certain cowardly lion (Lenora). But there was also a satisfaction in watching someone rant and rave while you silently watched them act like a crazy person. At least he could feel like the bigger person in that case.

But to answer the Headmaster's question. The obvious answers were sneak attacks, nonverbal spells, and for approaching easily spooked animals, but he heard his classmates offer all of those. Still, he had more thoughts to offer and he raised his hand.

"Silence can be respectful, sir," he began. "Especially when a teacher or another authority figure is speaking, one can give them their silence as a form of respect to show they are listening." And, just as important - "Silence can also keep people from revealing too much about themselves or giving away too much information, especially to one's adversaries." Considering he appreciated when people stayed out of his personal business and all.

‘Looking sharp as ever, Castillo.’

Did everyone hear that? Nina was positively delighted and her cheeks may have shown a tinge of pink, too. Looking sharp was very important to her and it was nice when others noticed the effort she put in (especially when it came from Headmaster Trent). If anything, the compliment made her carry herself with more confidence than usual, chin held high. All was as it should be. Kaiser’s smile helped too and she matched it with one of her own. She was in high spirits for once, it seemed.

But it wasn’t long before their Headmaster began addressing the class as a whole. Nina payed very close attention. Paying attention wasn’t anything she had difficulty with, her focus was quite refined. However, it was even easier to do when the receiver of said attention was a man as handsome as their Headmaster was. It clearly payed to be pretty.

His question provoked several thoughts. There were many activities that one could (or rather, should) preform silently. Among them were activities such as reading, listening to others, and perusing through the library. And most of her other classmate seemingly had no issue coming up with their own ideas. There was a first time for everything, it seemed. Though the question had been a rather basic one, perhaps they’d have less luck as the lesson progressed. But for now, most answers were at least somewhat decent. All except for the one that the Gryffindor Prefect had offered forth. That particular answer elicited an eye-roll from one Nina Castillo. How the girl was ever made a Prefect with lazy thinking such as that was absolutely miraculous. Clearly the administration ought to take more into account when appointing student leaders.

Wearing an unimpressed look after the last ew answers offered up, Nina raised her own hand deciding that she ought to contribute to restore Professor Trent’s faith in his students. Or at least to show off because she liked it when he complimented her. ”Silence is conducive to focus,” someone else had shared a similar thought, but Nina found their lack of explanation hardly helpful at all. ”Which would make it the ideal environment for tasks that require heavy focus, such as mindful meditation or the mastery of a difficult spell.” Nina practiced meditation every night before bed, so she knew what she was talking about.

curly haired prefect - "sometimes I get angry!" - 30/90 - *chicken emoji* - probably @ Disney - I speak dog

Silence was not a word that Nettie would have ever used to describe herself. The fact that this room was soundproof was...a little unnerving to her. She wasn't sure why. It's not like Trent was going to murder them all in here or anything, but still, it was weird knowing that all the sound was contained RIGHT HERE in this room. No where for it to go.

Things that required silence? Nettie raised her hand. "Eavesdropping," she answered before she could stop herself. Whoops. She couldn't help that her nosy brain immediately went to that place when he had asked the question. "And if you were trying to escape a prison or something...silence would be key to getting out of there without being caught," she added.

She really had no idea where this lesson was going.

Appreciative that the Headmaster made no real fuss about his choice silence. Instead his attention was drawn to the Hufflepuff prefect who had situated himself nearby. He only knew the name because Rebecca would not stop gushing about him from tryouts. And while Eiji would have liked to have all that go one in and out the other, his little sister's words were among the few he literally hung on.

Though Missa easily captured his attention soon enough and he offered her a small little side smirk before the lesson officially came to a start.

....though if that little Gryffindor did start running around screaming...Eiji was not here for that. What he was here for was the response the Headmaster offered that other Hufflepuff prefect and his lips curled into an amused kind of smirk.

As the topic of the day was reveled, Eiji found himself even more pleased. Silence. This was a positively winning situation for the Slytherin who tended to dislike Defense Against the Dark Arts because of how....enthusiastic his peers could be. Screaming spells did not make them any more powerful, okay?

What could be accomplished in silence? Listening. Observation. Things her personally preferred to do over speaking. Very few at Hogwarts were silent with the intention to listen, but rather they were buying their time to respond. In fact, noise pollution was proven to be bad for one's health - so more of his classmates should take heed.

Though if he were going to opt to answer aloud, his selections with regard to the subject specifically would be stealth and non-verbals. Though he much preferred the wording of one of his housemates: sneaking.

Also, one could debate that he was illustrating an accomplishment of silence. Listening and harsh judgement...because he was visibly rolling his eyes at a handful of answers.

”Morning, Dakest. Ready for the lesson? I need you to scream. Just get it out, right now. Imagine the worst thing that could possibly happen then really let go. Think absolute dooms day. Think ‘we’re all gonna die’ then go for it. Run around a bit too, hit the walls if you must.” Because...ahem….later was not an option.

................... ??

This was, by far, the weirdest set of instructions he had ever received. And he was in his third year at Hogwarts. That was saying a lot! It was safe to say that Lucas was confused, and it showed on his young face as he looked at the Professor and then around the room and then back again.

He wanted him to scream? And bounce around? In here?!

Was it a test? It had to be a test, right?

Still confused, he looked around the room again, whispering a very soft "Whaaaaat?" under his breath. There were alarms going off in his head, at this point. The Headmaster wanted him to go mad. In here. In front of EVERYONE. No no no. No, thank you! The only screaming he was going to do was the silent, internal kind.

When the lesson started, his eyes shifted back to the Headmaster, but there was no doubt that there were still alarms going off in his brain. Somewhere. In the back back back of his brain. What was the man talking about? Silence? Oh, that..... didn't sound too bad. Appreciating silence was more his thing. He was a quiet one in the family, after all.

What are things that can be accomplished silently? Lucas knew THIS. His hand shot up in the air as soon as the first answer came into his head. "It's calming! I mean, uh......." What did this have to do with Defence? "..... I guess....... it's better and easier to think things through when you're calm. If you're in danger, I mean. Otherwise you could make bad decisions and make things worse for yourself and it's...... not good," he finished off, lamely.

Sebastian’s eyes went a little wide when the Headmaster asked if there was a feather on him. He looked around his clothes and felt around his hair until he found the bugger. It happened to be from his owl of course. “Oh, this, yeah…had to send an urgent letter to my mum.” Even though he was actually sending a letter to the former CoMC professor….for reasons!

They were in a soundproof room. Interesting. What could today’s lesson be about? Sebastian listened to the question and pondered. Everyone else was making such good points he wasn’t sure if there was anything else he could contribute.

He quickly thought of something that no one else had really mentioned yet. “Pranks! In order to pull off a good prank without being caught you must be absolutely silent and stealth like otherwise you will immediately be caught. Silence while pulling a prank can also help you listen to the possibility of someone coming. Pranks require the utmost concentration, which includes being silent.” Though Sebastian hadn’t pulled off many pranks…he knew that they absolutely required stealth or you would definitely get caught and have to go to detention.

One thing Eloise Fairfield has learned in her ten years of falling and skating is how to take a fall which luckily enough it wasn't an illusion and even if it was. Oops. Her bad. Anyway, this floor was much more comfortable than the one in the dorm. Wonder if she could get the spell to try later. But her mind was forced back to the present and Headmaster talking and class starting.

Oh that is a good question Headmaster.

"Judging"

Like she was judging all the answers before hers in silence.

Ellie was momentarily disappointed when Headmaster Trent had interjected to answer her question that had been direction to Stella. They weren’t going to be meeting any dark creatures today. A pity, but it didn’t mean the lesson couldn’t be fun. That they we’re in a completely soundproof classroom was super unnerving and caused her to straightened up a little and to reach down to grab onto her wand for comfort.

Headmaster Trent then asked them to say things that required silence. Raising her hand Ellie answered "Yoga. My father does meditative yoga every night to calm his head." was good when you wanted to sleep peacefully. "Oh and if you are playing muggle reversed hide and go seek where you find and hide with other peers from the one that’s searching then you need to be silent to not get caught. It's fun!" We’re they going to be sneaking on each other or something?

In truth, Aaron just needed to get used to the idea of early morning lessons and being expected to finish mounds of assignments in short periods of time again. He was off to a rough start. "Still adjusting, Sir. Sorry about that." He ruffled his hair again before refocusing on those around him. Had he unintentionally been disruptive?

Little Rebecca's brother was looking in his direction, and the Prefect offered the younger boy an apologetic smile. Not that there was much to be done about him attracting attention. He'd shot up like a weed over the summer. And his restlessness probably wasn't helping. He was still getting used to be being taller, when he used to be the smallest.

Repressing yet another yawn, Aaron raised his hand. "Dealing with bees requires calm and moderate silence. I have to keep silent around my hives at home, in order not to excite them. They can be fatal when stirred up." Probably not the type of answer the Headmaster was looking for, but he was tired and he could talk about his bees all day long.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

He could see it, the nerves rising in some of the students at the mention of the room being soundproof. So long as they remembered the classroom rules everything would be fine. It may not have still looked like a classroom but the rules--as the returning students should be well aware of--still applied.

Given some of the answers, perhaps HE should have been the one concerned.

"Can't argue with that." The man conceded easily. He was a Gryffindor, calmer than a lot of Gryffindors he'd known back in his days and now within the castle but a Gryffindor all the same. Silence when he was going off, perfect ammunition. Killed him every time. It was the ultimate frustration. "Granted, depending on the who, they'll argue anyway and like McCarthy said, when provoked enough they may attack...lash out in aggravation but yes, silence...perfect way to set people off." She could do with that what she would. She was likely far more acquainted with her peers and their level of reactions than he ever would be.

Something that requires silence? I could think of quiet a few people....things. She thought to herself.

Raising her hand she waited until called upon and said, "Well sir, when working as an Auror it could be helpful to be very silent during missions, there's also the matter of non-verbal spells to be more obvious, or studying for NEWTs. Anything in the library as well unless you'd like to upset our lovely librarian." Eni chuckled to herself knowing very well the librarian is not so lovely when upset. Whoops.

Another fair point. "Aurors do have to exercise a bit of silence out in the field from time to time, yes. Sometimes it's the difference between life and death in high stakes situations and while the library isn't particularly high stakes, I'm glad you mentioned it as well." He wasn't often in the library but on occasion when he did visit...there was always that one kid.

Bless that kid, silencing charms were the only real solution--not that he'd encourage that. The students had a habit of taking an inch and dragging it for 10 miles.

It was clear as day that the room was fully padded but what hadn't been so clear was that the room was also soundproof. Now that was a little more interesting. As was the Headmaster's first question.

Many things could be accomplished silently. Some a little more easily than others, she was sure. There was one thing though that came to mind right away prompting Rylee to raise her hand and answer when it was her turn. "Silence could prove very effective when working with certain creatures. Especially those that might be frightened by noise and might run and hide or lash out in an attempt to harm you because you startled them." Not all creatures handled noise well and the outcome of scaring one could turn out very badly.

Very interesting she'd say that given...well....ahem, that was a matter for later. For now, Malachi nodded along to the Gryffindor's words.

"Correct. When it comes to certain creatures, it pays to be cautious. Frighten them and there's no telling which direction the adrenaline will kick in." Many creatures had a flight reflex but there were certainly those that were ready to rip you limb from limb.

The question was an interesting one and the seventh year could think of so many answers, but she was trying to find one that might apply to this lesson. "Silence is important when you're hiding. Whether it's in a dangerous situation or playing hide and seek, not making noise is important. Don't want to give yourself away."

Ah hide and seek. That game took him back. He was never very good at it. "Good point, Mallari. Hiding does require a proper dose of silence to be effective. In high stakes situations where you're likely to get yourself killed, it pays to put a little extra into keeping yourself quiet."

They'd...learn that soon enough.

"Glad to hear it." He really was. This being her last year here at Hogwarts, it paid to get that sort of thing sorted as soon as possible to avoid complications during the transition into the "big world". That was scary enough on its own.

"Absolutely. When tracking anyone, if the idea is to be successful then it pays to not have them know you're tracking them in the first place!" Another good point, indeed.

No...no he didn't think he'd respond to this one. The students in the castle did not go around snogging each other. Hanna gathered up and indeed had noticed the sound of the Headmaster's voice being absorbed. It was almost unsettling. It absorbed all of the sounds in the room, and nobody outside could hear them. However, it seemed that it was to be in silence, rather than to keep the noise from outside. Hanna listened to the thoughts of silence from her classmates, and raised her hand. "Similarly to those answers, silence is a necessity to allow people, or even animals, to be hyperaware of your environment. Whether you're hunting, or being hunted. By an animal, a bad wizard... or the Law Enforcement if you're a bad wizard. You need silence to be able to really stretch out your hearing. If it's not, you could miss any of the subtle sounds, indicating movements and locations." This was defence against the dark arts, after all.

He liked Nina, and could not for the life of him work out why it seemed that her dormmates had such a problem with her. All of that did make him all the more determined to be a friendly face, though.

Then there was a Gunnar, and he got a smile and a nod in return as he arrived. Kaiser leaned back against the wall right around the moment he heard what he assumed was Gunnar's stomach grumbling. He didn't laugh or anything though, being hungry was no joke. How long was it until lunch time again?

Well, it certainly wasn't now, because that slamming of the door meant class time. Kaiser fidgeted and glanced at the door a few times, unnerved as he always was by the impression he got of being trapped inside the room. Luckily, Trent called the class to attention pretty much immediately, so he could try to focus on him and forget about the door situation as much as he could.

Okay, so, silence. A topic Kaiser had very little trouble with, though he couldn't help but wonder exactly how Kodee was going to cope with it.

Once Trent asked the question, Kaiser's mind went to one particular place, probably because of mountains of personal experience. He raised his hand and, when it was his turn to talk, said simply, "Sneaking." That was it. No further information. No explanation of exactly what context the sneaking was in because that would... probably raise a lot of questions.

...

".....Yes." Forgive his hesitation but the lack of context left the man quite wary. Despite his most optimistic overview of the students, responses like this never ceased to remind him that they DID get up to things. What they were doing half the time, he didn't know...and something told him he didn't wanna know either.

"Hopefully not too much of that going on." Did the boy hear the hope in his tone? Did he hear the skepticism too? They were both equal parts there.

Austin snorted at this question. She had a point. As for his answer? Everyone else seamed to be saying more or less the same thing. Reading people was a good one. As was sneaking...Austin did say he'd try to speak. And he had an idea too that he wanted to share. So he put his hand up.
"...You need to be silent so you don't wake a sleeping creature that could hurt you." His voice was just loud enough to hear.

This response was far less worrying. It showed thought and the understanding that you could die in dangerous situations. An understanding of consequences was always a good based for which to build your defense tactics. Nothing worse than a person who fancied themselves invincible. "Yes. There's a reason the motto cautions tickling a sleeping dragon. Sound can be quite a bit more jarring for a creature and a startled creature can be infinitely more dangerous. It pays to be careful."

"Good, yes. There's a lot more to be gained from observation and one of the most effective methods of observing is in silence. Avoid distractions that might prevent you from seeing the whole picture for what it is." A similar point to one that had already been raised but no less accurate.

She couldn't help but grinned at her fellow Puff. It was probably her own fault because Aurora couldn't leave without her morning skin care routine and usually it took like 30 minutes (or more) to do that. "It's okay, I forgive you. Something that required silence in order to keep herself safe... Aurora raised her hand to answer his question. "When there is a snake." Even the smallest movement could endanger someone if they were face by a poisonous snake.

"Right. Chae. I'll remember that." He would have, eventually, but students offering up their names certainly helped that along. It hadn't been meant to be an offense but it sure worked out well. This was one less nameless person within the room. That would prove useful, surely.

"Snakes?" The Headmaster fixed her with a curious look, not sure he was entirely understanding. "I suppose to prevent yourself from panicking you could go silent but snakes are able to detect thermal energy. If it really wanted you, chances are it'd find you anyway." So maybe running? As the headmaster spoke and introduced the topic, she supposed being quiet was going to be okay too but she really needed to try to take her mind off of St Mungos. For Merlin's Sake, she was going to be OF-AGE in six months; she didn't need to start heaving and sobbing like a baby in the middle of a lesson.

At least the Hufflepuff Prefect could take her mind off things, in which Maeve definitely grinned at that answer. BUT EXCUSE YOU, ARCHER, she was NOT loud when making out. Or actually she hadn't any idea how loud she was given that she was rather preoccupied and not really paying attention to how much noise she was making.

Her thoughts flitted over to her aunt in that moment as she heard others talking about tracking and she recalled two summers ago her expedition to Egypt. "Cursebreaking and runes require concentration .... or well, anything that requires concentration, really." She recalls her aunt shushing her when she had a million questions.

Malachi had noticed the unusual silence, but like with the spooked look of some of the others, he attributed it to the Gryffindor finding out the room was soundproof. Of all the things that could go wrong in a room like this, it being soundproof seemed the least consequential.

"A good point, Walsh. Tasks that require a fair bit of concentration are better done with silence. Noise, as everyone can agree, has a way of being a terrible distraction. It can literally prevent you from getting things done."

"That. Yes." While he wasn't trying to get students to pick a particular response--quite the contrary, he liked the out of the box ones...even the ones that left him questioning his students--this one was essentially the nail on the head for the lesson.

"Dueling becomes a lot easier when you aren't constantly announcing your intentions to your opponents." That was true for a lot of things in life and encompassed some of the things his classmate had mentioned.

"Bird watching. Because the slightest movement might startle the creatures. Or robbing a house, wouldn't want the owners to wake up just when you're stealing something right?" he said as he pushed himself off of the wall to get closer to the gathered group.

"I've never been but I'd imagine bird watching does require silence ye--what?" Malachi blinked at the Ravenclaw. It wasn't that he was wrong, it's just not the sort of response he'd expect from him specifically.

"I mean...if you end up deciding robbing is gonna be the way forward, it does pay to do so silently in case the homeowner is the sort that can easily overpower you and make you regret your choice of housing....yes....silence in robbery--pass your NEWTs and become an upstanding citizen, okay Katharos? Another to mention avoiding creatures by remaining silent. Malachi nodded. Some may have thought they could fight the creature but that was not the case in absolutely every situation.

"I'm glad you brought that point up. It's not enough to stop talking. You need to be fully concentrating and in full control of both your body and your mind. One can be silent but panicky and thus nowhere closer to removing themselves from the given situation." One could also trudge noisily and get eaten, but she'd already loosely alluded to as much.

"Both good points." Even if he was slightly raising a brow at the first part. The boy seemed calmer than the sort to lash out because someone was ignoring him but the man was aware he saw these students mostly in a class setting and not necessarily when they were in these situations. "I do sincerely hope you aren't going around hexing everyone who drops an argument with you."

But at this point one could only hope. The respect thing was spot on. Silence when someone spoke was the perfect way to let them know that you had their full attention and cared about what they had to say. Were his classmates listening? Some needed to more than others.

"Meditation is an excellent time to introduce silence. Tasks like that, ones that require a good amount of focus," As some of her classmates had mentioned, "Really do benefit from a healthy dose of silence. It aids in clearing the mind, in the case of meditation, and otherwise remaining fully concentrated on whatever you happen to be working on. "

It was an interesting take, a scenario that focused on the inner self rather than outside influences that forced you into silence.

This one got a raise of his brows too. Eavesdropping he would have to excuse in the moment while he focused on the sneaking out of prison bit.

Silence.

It was fitting given the topic and while Malachi would have preferred if the boy had offered up his own take on the question he could at least see he was attentively listening. He would take it over someone aimlessly daydreaming any day. You actually had to do something about that sort and that would take time that was better spent on the lesson.

So then....no running and screaming and getting everything out ahead of time? That was fine too. He would just have faith that any freaking out later on Dakest's part would be the silent, heart attack inducing but outwardly just shaking kind. That he would accept, that was fine. The boy's response gave him confidence that even that might not happen. Perhaps today would be the day the Gryffindor boldly stepped into whatever the lesson entailed without question or hesitation. This was a new year, perhaps this was a new Dakest too.

"Correct. Remaining calm and thus quiet in a given situation makes it much easier to then work through that situation. You aren't doing anyone any favours while you're panicky and all over the place. Good point."

Sweet Circe, another one of them.

Malachi blinked at the Hufflepuff, not sure how to respond. On the one hand, he was right. A poorly executed prank was just asking for trouble. Those students clearly wanted to be caught and deserved it for being thick enough to be caught. No care, no thought to back ups and contingencies. Mm. At the same time, he didn't need a castle full of pranksters. That got old FAST, as did detentions. The Headmaster solidly didn't want spend the year babysitting overgrown children in the dungeons.

"Silence will be beneficial when pulling off pranks...yes." He finally conceded, cautiously. No need to encourage this. "But as with Gladin's point earlier, I'll have to say silence isn't the only thing you'll need to ensure you pull off a good prank. Concentration and silence only get you so far."

Oh that is a good question Headmaster.

"Judging"

Like she was judging all the answers before hers in silence.

"Is THAT what you've been doing this whole time, Fairfield?" The man asked, stuck somewhere between disbelief and amusement...closer to disbelief but y'know.

"I suppose...you're not wrong, it's easier judging when you've silently assessed a situation or a person....but then I suppose it also depends on if you care that others know you're judging them. No real point unless they know." Or was that just the Gryffindor in him getting louder? Why judge if you couldn't make SURE they knew they were being judged? Was he the only one who appreciated getting a rise out of others when he decided to do things?

Headmaster Trent then asked them to say things that required silence. Raising her hand Ellie answered "Yoga. My father does meditative yoga every night to calm his head." was good when you wanted to sleep peacefully. "Oh and if you are playing muggle reversed hide and go seek where you find and hide with other peers from the one that’s searching then you need to be silent to not get caught. It's fun!" "Correct. Both those activities would require and turn out better if you employed silence." He'd already covered the benefits of silence in both scenarios but it didn't make her response less true.

"Meditative yoga would especially benefit. A calm environment where you can clear your mind and focus on your breathing. Noise would only dismantle that."

"Quite alright, my boy." He was still adjusting to the castle life once again himself. Overnight he'd gone from being responsible for four people--himself included--to once again being in charge of hundreds of students in what could politely be described as something near a death trap. Never a dull moment, yeah?

"Bees?" Huh. "Never pegged you for the sort, Botros, but I suppose you're right. You wanna make sure you don't disrupt their environment too much or give them reason to perceive you as a threat." Such an interesting contrast. Beater (the most violent position on the Quidditch pitch) then gentle bee keeper. The world was an interesting place, wasn't it?

Was that the last of them? It was time to move on then. Malachi walked to a section of wall while the last of them offered up an answer. With a tap of his wand, the wall opened up to reveal a ball pit. It was meant only for storage.

"Now that we've discussed the virtues of silence, we're going to try a little exercise that ties in with what one of your classmates said. In duels, life truly does become easier when you aren't announcing your every intention to your opponent. Keeping the element of surprise is often just the push you need to get you into the winning position. The easiest way to keep the element of surprise? Non-verbal spells."

The man reached into the pit for the balls, passing them around to the students. It wouldn't be enough for everyone, in fact only half of them would end up with a ball. "We won't really get into non-verbals until Thursday's lesson but today we'll be doing something of a light introduction. Think of it as more a class on applicability. Getting you to solidly understand what makes them such a game changer."

They'd have an essay at some point, but he wouldn't bring THAT up just yet.

"Easiest way to do that is with a little game of dodgeball. As you can see, only half of you possess a ball. If you don't have one, find someone that does." Pair work. "If you don't have a ball, come collect a blindfold." Here he paused to fish the blindfolds from his pocket. He extended them to the students for them to take. "Those of you with blindfolds will be the first victi--volunteers." That was probably a better word for it. "This exercise is simple. In pairs, the student with the ball will have two shots at you. In one shot, you must say where your throwing the ball, whether to the left, the right, toward their face, by their legs. Be as detailed as you can. In the next shot, say nothing, just throw the ball. In both throws, the blindfolded student will have to dodge the attack." Did they see where this was going? It was essentially a duel. The spoken throw being the spell with an incantation and the silent throw being the non-verbal.

The balls would not be tremendously painful no matter how hard they were thrown, suffice to say the man didn't trust half of them. "Give yourselves some space along the line." At that, a line appeared dividing the room into equal halves. "Blindfolded kids on this side." He pointed. "And those with a ball on the other. Face each other. You can begin when you're ready. I'll give you about 10 minutes."

OOC: We've come to the mini-activity portion of the lesson! You'll have until around this time on Friday, May 10th give or take a few hours. Find a partner and take turns throwing the ball at each other while the other partner is blindfolded. In one throw, have your character explicitly state how and where the ball is being thrown, in the other just go for it. Have fun! Nudge me if you've got any questions. Malachi will of course still be present to help as needed.

Patrick swallowed moving further into the room. He calmed down a bit before turning back to Headmaster Trent. “My experience with things padded isn’t grand. But I’ll be okay.” He forced out a smile as he moved closer to some other students. Ah silence he knew that well reading in silence was one of his favorite things. He was ready for that question. But man these silencing walls made it hard to hear people’s answers.

Raising his hand he was ready, “hiking it’s good to be quiet at times depending on your purpose while hiking.” he listened to others answers and nodded along. Of course at least they weren’t throwing spells at each other. He noticed he had a ball. Now he needed a partner. “Anyone need a partner?” he smiled trying to get someone’s attention so he didn’t have to be that person who had to be paired last.

Daisy noticed Patrick mention his need for a partner as she grabbed a blindfold from Headmaster Trent. She walked up to the Slytherin prefect and said to him, "I'll be your partner, Patrick," before heading over to the side where those who were going to be blindfolded would be. She turned to face Patrick as she placed the blindfold around her eyes.

Default I have a ball, need a partner.

Eniola was looking forward to this. Seeing practical ways to show students the meaning behind spells or why they’re needed as non-verbal, especially in an all ages class, without magic was perfect. Now all ages can do it with a similar skill level, except Quidditch players who have much better aim than the average. She thought. Well, she hoped. She is trying out for her house team after all.

As the balls were handed out she thought she saw a wicked grin on the Headmaster’s face when he got to her, but she could very well just Ben picturing things. Gripping the ball in her hand it didn’t seem too hard but pliable enough for her to get a good grip on it. Looking around she saw that quite a few people didn’t have a ball and she tried to make eye contact with someone close to her age - she wouldn’t feel right hitting a firstie - to pair up.

“Anyone looking for a partner? I’ve got a ball.” Eni said just as she made eye contact with someone.

Lenora was pleased that the Headmaster found her answer acceptable, especially when she had felt rather unsure about it. Completely ignoring what the Slytherin [ Gunnar ] said ( ugh, he was the worst! But she wasn’t going to let him affect her mood, thanks very much ) the fourth year listened as the Headmaster proceeded to explain the activity portion. Oh, yay! The fun part. She always found the practical portion of the lessons most interesting.

Um. She had a ball so she had to partner up with someone.. someone that she LIKED, hopefully. The Gryffindor cleared her throat and spoke rather loudly for people to hear.

“Hi, guys! Partner up?”

Right, so... Apparently staying silent if there's a snake around wouldn't really help. But she often heard that they're not suppose to make any movement or even a slight noise if they were faced by a snake? Even though Aurora had never (and hopefully will never be) in that situation. Thinking about the snakes just make her shudder, probably that's why the sorting hat didn't put her in Slytherin.

And they're having the practical portion already? Well, that's quick. Not that the Hufflepuff minded but this is Defense Against the Dark Arts which probably has more practical part rather than theoretical. But first, let's find a partner. "Ooooh, I would love to be your partner." She waved frantically to Eniola. Wasn't it nice to partner up with her dorm mate? And not to mention she got the ball already.

Analiese took a ball and stood helplessly in the middle of the room. "Er..." Her first instinct was to go to either Austin or Avalon. And for some stupid reason she stood in the middle of the room instead of following her instincts.

“Hi, guys! Partner up?”
He had basically called her answer excellent.

For the record, she was glowing. But her expression quickly faded to one of concern when Headmaster Trent revealed a ball pit. Nina absolutely refused to jump in it, if that were the activity. Fortunately, it was not. Unfortunately, the activity wasn’t much better. Dodgeball. The very thought made Nina frown. She’d much prefer the essay. She watched as balls were distributed, and found herself relieved when she wasn’t given one. This meant she didn’t have to participate right?

Wrong.

……. Every time Professor Trent revealed another aspect of the activity, Nina’s frowned deepened. It’s like he wanted her to hate the lesson. Which was a ridiculous thought because he had praised her for her answer AND he said she looked sharp as ever. Clearly she was a favorite. She tried to hide the frown she was wearing as she walked up to grab a blindfold. Her eyes were probably giving her away. Which she didn’t entirely mind as he should be aware of how unappealing this activity was. Maybe next time he’d choose something less chaotic? It was a lot to ask of DADA.

Walking towards the line, she paused in deep thought. It was important to consider the options. She didn’t want to partner with someone who looked incredibly strong, nor did she want to partner with a total slacker. It seemed, however, that luck was not on her side because the person she immediately locked eyes with was Lenora Bell. Someone Nina had a distaste for, though she was sure the feeling was mutual. And so, regrettably, the Slytherin walked up to the girl.

”We have to switch places though, I can’t wear a blindfold,” she held said blindfold out towards the girl. ”It’ll ruin my eye makeup.” Among other things. That and she wasn’t particularly keen on being ambushed by balls. Nor was she about to give this girl the opportunity to take out any distaste for her via these physical means.

Ah, Nina.

Lenora ONLY seemed to be interacting with people she didn’t like in this class, just her luck. Clearly not hiding her disappointment, her brows furrowed, she just watched the girl standing in front of her for a long moment. Could she... just find someone else to partner up with please? PLEASE? She looked around, trying to see if there was anyone else who was interested.

Sorry, what? Switch places? Yeah, right. Like she was going give Nina a chance to hit her with a ball. Oh and did she care about her eye makeup? Nope. “No, I’m not going to switch places with you, sorry. Hope you don’t mind.” Lenora considered giving her a smile.. but maybe not.

Default Gunnar?
Puff by day, snake by night | Mj's bestie | Always UP to Something...

She couldn't help but laugh at his answers, in all honesty, she enjoyed the Headmaster he was different than most and she liked that. "I knew it." Though she didn't mind being in it and she did bounce on her toes a bit just to see how it would feel.

Waiting for the lesson to get started she gave a wave to her brother and to some of her friends, but all eyes were on the HM as he got started. What could you do in silence, well there were many things; read a book, sing in your head, color, plant plants, watch clouds, but what could you do to keep you safe? Was he meaning nonverbal spells? Would they be trying that today?

No, they couldn't be, it was way too soon for that, right?

She was thinking about this so much that Chloe forgot to raise her hand and answer the question, soon she was away from her own thoughts and listening to the professor again. She frowned a bit with the blindfold and worried about getting hit in the face, but she quickly knew exactly who her partner was going to be.

Moving probably faster than she should in a classroom she ran over to Gunnar, "Be my partner.... please" He had a ball and she trusted him. Moving to get one of the blindfolds she looked around, was she to put it on?
