Default Potions Lesson 1

As you turn into the potions corridor for class, something appears, well...off. The wooden doors to the laboratory and Noble's office are there exactly where you'd expect, and yet, as you arrive outside the classroom, it becomes quickly apparent that there is no sign of the usual entrance. A plain, solid stone wall stands where the door would usually be, blocking your way.

Professor Noble is nowhere to be seen, though his overly large and grumpy cat, Annie, skulks further down the corridor.

Lesson progression:
Question 1 - START HERE!
Update 2
Update 3
Update 4
Update 5

Please tackle the doors in order, regardless of where others already are! So if you're stuck at Door 1, keep trying until you get to Door 2...then Door 3 and so on. I will be here and posting regularly to catch you up if you need.

Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll

Tina kept her eyes glued to the door, waiting anxiously for something to happen. Feelings of self doubt gnawed at her, and just when she was positive her answer was wrong... the door opened. Whew, thank Merlin! The dark-haired Ravenclaw couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief. Now that they had that little guessing game out of the way, they could look forward to a normal class without any more surprises, right?

Apparently not... Tina stepped through the door, expecting to find the professor and a familiar classroom setup, but all she saw was another locked door. Ugh! Seriously?! One normal class with no surprises, just one...was that so much to ask? This was a bit much. Even Ravenclaw tower capped it at one riddle to get inside! This game stopped being fun when... well, actually it had never been fun for her. Tina inwardly groaned. She supposed it could be worse' at least she wasn't still stuck in the corridor where any random professor could happen by.

Tina waited for a path to clear before approaching the door to carefully read the next question. Polyjuice potion... Gee, I wonder why Noble chose to ask about that particular potion, she thought. Of course she was being sarcastic; it was an obvious reference to the prank in charms class. Thanks to Headmaster Trent's backhanded reprimand reminder that day, she knew Polyjuice was banned at Hogwarts, but it didn't make sense that one would be allowed to use it anywhere else either. Tina bit her lower lip, lost in thought. "Whenever I want to be someone else for a day" sounded too simple to be the correct answer, and "whenever I want. as long as I change into a muggle" seemed a bit problematic to her too. Wouldn't that have the potential to violate the International Statute of Secrecy?

Tina pondered the remaining two answers at length. On the one hand, it sort of made sense that the use of polyjuice potion would be allowed if the Ministry knew about it, but the question didn't necessarily ask when it was allowed. It asked when it was appropriate, and Tina knew from experience that "allowed" and "appropriate" could be two very different things. That and the fact that the previous question had been about ethics gave her the feeling that this was an ethical dilemma rather than a legal one. There was only one way Tina herself would in good conscience use polyjuice potion. She drew her wand and tapped After obtaining informed consent from the person I want to change into. Please let that be the right one...

There was relief when he was allowed to pass through the door, though he was also not surprised in the least. It had been, to him, the most obvious of answers. Though as he stepped into the next room and peered at the next question there - how many of these would there be? - he found himself scratching the back of his neck in more than just confusion. In fact, he was even leaving scratch marks from his dirty fingernails his movements were so rigorous.

There was...more than one answer he wanted to tap with his wand here. And the polyjuice mention was more than triggering. The first option, if the rumors were true, was incredibly upsetting for reasons far beyond breaching of the Statute. The second, and of a like mind to one Chloe Kettleburn, sounded very much like something he would have written himself. In fact, he could hear the voice of Levi Kenning ringing in his ears once more and it brought an odd sense of comfort to him. The third option was an easy no...as was the fourth one. Which, again, made the events of last term all the more frustrating. And then there was the final option. Knowing that polyjuice was a controlled substance and one with very serious consequences from the Ministry...well...it made sense that one would need their approval, you know? And, well, if it were a dire undercover operation he reckoned that consent or something wouldn't matter so much?

Maybe he was over thinking this.

Ultimately, Derf went with the one that felt the most right to him. The one he wanted to be true...even if perhaps it wasn't. Thus, with his wand, he tapped the answer about consent.

Patrick walked through the door after answering correctly. He let out a breath that he had no idea he was holding. He was then greeted with a second door. It was not what he wanted to see. It was annoying he finally realized this all was happening because of the Max Carden duplicates during their class earlier in the term. Oh boy... he should have known that something like this would happen.

Looking over the sheet again he thought about the answer that was correct. He felt like you should have to tell the ministry what you’re doing but that you should also have the consent of the person that you were duplicating. His mind started trailing off to situations that you would need to use polyjuice potion. It felt like a catch 22 he looked at both answers and then finally decided that he would go with the consent answer.

Tapping his wand he waited to see if he was right. Everyone was eerily silent and he didn’t like it at all.

Default Question 1
curly haired prefect - "sometimes I get angry!" - 30/90 - *chicken emoji* - probably @ Disney - I speak dog

Trinetta had grown to really REALLY dislike potions lately - which she knew was unreasonable, but it didn't matter. She had her boy REASONS. Although she was definitely intrigued when she got to the potions classroom and saw that the Professor wasn't there at all - but there was a quiz of sorts she had to answer to gain entry. Interesting.

She looked at the first question and then took out her wand, tapping the last answer, "All of the above". It seemed pretty straight forward to her. Those were all things that could possibly present ethical dilemmas, it seemed, so it was only logical that it covered all of those.

Well, look at that. She must have been right, because suddenly the door appeared and a new room was presented to her. It wasn't the classroom, but smaller, and she noticed another piece of parchment on the wall. Ah, polyjuice potion... That had been an issue this term. She wondered if the Headmaster was in on this.

Regardless, it was probably a good topic to review. And it almost seemed like a trick question because while it WAS banned at Hogwarts, it didn't really seem right just do it whenever you wanted to outside of Hogwarts. So Natalie selected the one about consent. That seemed right.

After obtaining informed consent from the person I want to change into.

For Malachi and Daisy, second time was the charm, it seemed. This time when they tried the door, it opened and let them through. For Trinetta too, the door gave way and opened easily.

Once inside, you don’t yet find yourself inside the classroom, but instead in a small, brightly lit room with another locked door in front of you. A piece of parchment hanging by the locked door draws your eye; another question from Professor Noble.

SPOILER!!: Parchment: second door

Tap the correct answer with your wand to proceed.

2. When is it appropriate to use polyjuice potion?
  • Whenever I want, as long as I change into a muggle.
  • After obtaining informed consent from the person I want to change into.
  • Whenever I want to be someone else for a day.
  • It’s banned at Hogwarts, but I can use it any other time or place I want.
  • As long as I tell the Ministry what I’m doing, it’s all good.

He wanted to continue but ...Annie...he didn't want to stop playing with her either... 'No Dorian, focus on your education.' knowing that he could pet the cat after class, the Ravenclaw stooped down to pet the cat a moment longer before he got up "I'll ask Professor Noble if i can give you a treat later, okay?" he said as if the cat could understand the human language and with one last scratch behind the cat's ear, he entered through the doorway.

The next room was small but brightly lit and the Ravenclaw crossed the room the moment he saw another parchment appear. Reading it, he took out his acacia wand and tapped the second from last option "It’s banned at Hogwarts, but I can use it any other time or place I want" because polyjuice potion wasn't illegal to make except at school.

Or not.

The door had snapped shut. Great. Now she was forced to stay. This was annoying. What was even MORE annoying was the second piece of parchment. They were still being tortured, it seemed. Was having to attend class enough? Did they really need a pop quiz right this moment???

The Gryffindor (impatiently) waited her turn to walk up to the parchment, and when she read the question... She had to take a step back in shock.

....... Okay, she understood what was happening here.

@ HER NEXT TIME, PROFESSOR N!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not caring to look around the room to see if others were staring at her, the one who had blatantly broken the rule and perhaps was one reason behind their pop quiz, she stepped forward again and tapped her wand on the answer that read 'It’s banned at Hogwarts'.

Right. Okay. They got it. Couldn't they let bygones be bygones??? SHE HAD SERVED A WHOLE MONTH OF DETENTION. AND HOUSE ARREST. Enough was enough. Geez.

The second door stayed firmly shut for Dorian and Zoryn. And not only that, but was that a drip of water you felt on the back of your neck? And another one?

A glance towards the ceiling would reveal a water sprinkler system, and the drizzle of water coming from it was definitely starting to get stronger. Maybe you should read through the question a bit more closely and try again before you get too soggy?

SPOILER!!: Parchment: second door

Tap the correct answer with your wand to proceed.

And found another parchment. Wonderful.

Giving an annoyed huff through his nose - he didn't sign up for this - Abra went through the whole rigmarole of reading through the parchment and the options listed yet again. And, yet again, he squinted and trailed his finger under each of the words in turn and all - the whole thing taking him literally forever once more - and then stood there puzzling over it.

This one was difficult, because... well... it was correct that Polyjuice Potion was banned at Hogwarts, but he didn't think Noble would be trying to teach them that they could use Polyjuice Potion whenever they wanted at any other time. But none of the other options - even the ones that sounded a bit more ethically sound, like the 'informed consent' one - mentioned the fact that it was banned at Hogwarts, which had kind of been a whole THING recently, you know?

So Abra... didn't tap any of the answers with his wand. He just stood there and decisively did nothing, choosing no answer. If that didn't work, well, he'd actually have a go, but for now, he was relying on the idea that this was a trick question.

So. No answer. Final answer.

With no answer chosen by Abra, nothing happened. Assuming you didn’t want to stay stuck here, maybe try committing to an answer with a tap of your wand…or maybe voicing your specific concerns?

Nothing. Okay, then, since Chloe still had her wand out, she directed her attention and wand hand toward the parchment once it was within reach. Polyjuice was allowed at Hogwarts, or at least it wasn't specifically banned (yet), so she suspected that was a red herring.

But there was one that sounded like it was written by Derf, so Chloe tapped it with her wand. After obtaining informed consent from the person I want to change into.

He didn't think this question was much more difficult. He was able to quickly eliminate most of the choices. He wasn't sure what the law on polyjuice potion was, but the question was asking what was appropriate, not what was legal. Okay, this was just the second door, but it still felt like too many doors already. Cordelia tapped “After obtaining informed consent from the person I want to change into” with her wand, because she was pretty sure that was one of the issues that had come up earlier in the year. Pushing on the door handle, she hoped it would let her into the classroom and not lead her to another door. When would she get out of this nightmarish state? If it was another door behind this door, she was going to scream. Could she opt out of the whole door after door thing? Were they even having a lesson today, or would she just be stuck in an endless loop of dors that may or may not be hallucinations?

Whilst Chloe apparently needed a refresher on the rules surrounding Polyjuice potion at Hogwarts, she, Indigo, Cordelia, Tina, Derfael, Patrick and Natalie had got the nuance of the question and selected the right answer. The door opened, and, perhaps unsurprisingly at this point, led into another small room. A third question awaited them:

SPOILER!!: Parchment: third door

Tap the correct answer.

3. Which of the following scenarios shows informed consent?
  • Asking a friend if they would like to try your potion whilst they’re still half asleep
  • Making sure your friend fully understands what the potion is and does, including any risks, before putting in their drink
  • Checking whether your friend is allergic to the potion before giving it to them
  • Getting your friend to say “yes” before giving it to them
  • None of the above

Nettie grinned as the door swung open for her. That had been an EASY one, although she was sure Noble would make sure the rest of the questions wouldn't be as simple. She got to the second door and read over the second question.

Hmm, didn't this all seem a little...hypocritical? The professors had used polyjuice potion last year, which Nettie had come to learn was a lot more complicated than it seemed initially. Perhaps this was their way of explaining themselves?

She read over the options a few times before tapping her answer - the consent one. That was the most important thing, and all the other answers just...didn't seem right.

Cordelia’s reaction to getting to move past the second door was not one of satisfaction, but one of sheer terror. More doors. No, no no, this couldn’t be happening. Without even bothering to read the question on the third door, Cordelia sat down with her knees hugged against her chest and slowly rocked back and forth. ”Aaaaah! No! No more!” The young girl screamed at the door in anguish. She was trapped. No way out. There was just an endless maze of doors, doors, doors with questions of ever increasing difficulty. One had been annoying, two was two too many, and three, well three was more than enough. She couldn’t do it anymore, she just couldn’t. She wanted out. Out of here, away from these never-ending doors that were toying with her mind. ”This isn’t real, this isn’t real,” Cordelia whispered to herself as she rocked back and forth. Any moment now she would be delivered from these hallucinations of being trapped in a loop of doors with no escape.

Daisy was thrilled that her second attempt had been the correct choice. She opened the door to find a very bright room with yet another locked door. The Hufflepuff read the question about Polyjuice Potion and the possible answers. After a moment's thought, she used her wand to tap "After obtaining informed consent from the person I want to change into." It seemed like the most ethical answer.

Pleased to be let through, and thinking she would be coming face-to-face with Professor Noble, Hanna stopped short at seeing another piece of parchment, hanging by another locked door. Was this like a Babushka doll classroom? How many more doors were there before they got into the actual classroom?

With wand still in hand, Hanna read over the second question. Well clearly the first one was incorrect. The third one was also clearly incorrect. The fourth didn't seem true, although certainly it seemed a thing that would be banned at Hogwarts. And the final one, there was something about it that might have seemed true but probably wasn't. Hanna tapped the parchment with her wand, over the second answer - after obtaining informed consent from the person I want to change into.

People had gotten the first one wrong? Seriously? Though, she obviously hadn't been one of those people, so she stepped through the door, only to be greeted by.....another question. This one about the use of polyjuice. Thinking of the many Maxes earlier this term, Archer considered the choices. Technically, there were two correct anwsers in this case. Buuuut, the one Noble was probably looking for was....after obtaining informed consent from the person I want to change into. So, that's the one she tapped, returning to using the wall/door as a backscratcher after making her selection.

Why was she so itchy?

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

Expecting the door to open up for him as well after the others had went through it, Dorian was very surprised when he tried to push the door and it stayed firmly shut. What? He pushed again and even pulled it but nothing happened. And if that wasn't embarrassing enough, the Ravenclaw looked around to find that only he and Zoryn had gotten it wrong.

......Zoryn....he was on the same quiz level as Zoryn Spinnet... His head hurt.

Rubbing his forehead as he turned back around, Dorian read the parchment again when he felt something fall on top of his head. Glancing up at the ceiling, the fifth year felt a drizzle of water falling on his face. Running a hand through his hair as the water got stronger, he quickly lifted up his wand and tapped the After obtaining consent option because that one seemed like another good answer.

For the record, Zoryn wasn't all too thrilled to be stuck with Dorian either. He was a nerd. He was making this room smell like nerd. and OH MY GOD-- HER HAIR!!!!! Zoryn jumped in front of him the moment she felt the sprinkler turn on. There. He could take the majority of it's wet.

For the record, this was dumb.

If it wasn't banned at Hogwarts THEN WHY DID SHE GET INTO SO MUCH TROUBLE??????? Clearly something was going on here. Because none of the answers sounded right.

Letting out a groan in frustration, the Gryffindor picked the answer that sounded like Derf. After obtaining informed consent from the person I want to change into. Blah. Blah. Blah. He was all high and holy so this must've been the right choice.

But what was the point of polyjuice if the person KNEW you were turning into them? That defeated THE WHOLE POINT. Of course Professor Noble was going to take the fun out of potions. She should've known. He was a fun sucker.

When he tapped his answer Indigo found that the door was unlocked for him, which must have meant that he'd gotten it right again. A few people in the second room had gotten it wrong, which meant that the group moving forward kept shrinking. There would surely be an actual class, wouldn't there?

He was prepared to read and answer the next question when he noticed a young girl sit on the floor with her arms around her knees. He glanced at the other older students. Surely someone else would be better prepared to handle the situation. Like Derf? He was Head Boy, wasn't he? But Indigo was all too familiar with panic attacks, and something inside him wouldn't let him ignore the girl. So he crouched, and softly touched her arm. "Are you okay?" He asked softly.

Soooooooo... one issue with going the 'no answer' route was that Abra wasn't entirely sure how long he should wait before giving it up as a bad job. He did wait a while too, until his impatience won out and he screwed up his face and regarded the parchment again, with one eye shut, as that sort of stopped the words from moving about so much.

Maybe he should just choose an answer, but the situation hadn't changed; none of the options really felt right to him. For a while, Abra stood there, hovering his wand over the parchment in great indecision, before lowering it again. Nope. He was STICKING TO HIS ANSWER.

New idea!

He knocked on the door instead. And sort of shuffled closer, and tried calling through it. "Sir? I, uh... think none of these." He paused, for just a second, then went on. "Polyjuice is, uh, against school rules, right? Which means... it's not appropriate to use it whenever you want to while here, even with informed consent from someone, even if you tell the Ministry..." Man, he felt pretty ridiculous just kind of talking to a door and hoping for the best... "But I also don't think it's appropriate to use it any time or place that's not here..."

Another pause. Maybe no answer was the wrong answer. Maybe he ought to just pick an option that sounded like something Noble would say, to avoid getting stuck here all lesson...

Vivienne watched as the action unfolded. Then she saw the door appear. Now she knew the rules: when a door closes, another door opens up to another world. Now the next door. Vivienne was not sure but she guessed anyways. She pointed her wand to "After obtaining informed consent from the person I wanna change into" and tapped it. She then waited to enter the door.

YES, second question passed. It wasn't like Chloe was head and shoulders ahead of anyone in the class, but it was nice to get things right in such a tangible way. Even if the Headmaster was giving her a bit of stink eye. She stunk eyed him right back.

As for the next question, Chloe pondered the different answers on the parchment. They all sort of overlapped, but only one of them covered everything. Making sure your friend fully understands what the potion is and does, including any risks, before putting in their drink. It was important that whoever took the potion knew what was going to happen.

She read over the options a few times before tapping her answer - the consent one. That was the most important thing, and all the other answers just...didn't seem right.

Tap the correct answer.

3. Which of the following scenarios shows informed consent?
  • Asking a friend if they would like to try your potion whilst they’re still half asleep
  • Making sure your friend fully understands what the potion is and does, including any risks, before putting in their drink

An endless maze? Professor Noble wasn’t that mean. And for better or for worse, he hardly considered her trapped. Five questions, was all he’d laid out. Plus, nothing had been said about them not being able to confer…only that they had to tap the parchment one at a time. The first-year needed to learn to ask for help if she needed it, not just throw a temper tantrum. So for the moment, he let Cordelia and Indigo be. A clear mind could yet prevail.

Chloe was right, the answers did all sort of overlap…but apparently she hadn’t chosen the correct one, as when she went to open the door, it remained shut. And to make matters worse, the skin was tautening on her wand hand and breaking out into…boils? Best re-read the details in the answers carefully and try again, before the boils can spread any further.

YES! This was actually easier than she had expected. Nettie followed the next group of people to the third question. Reading it over, she saw the Head Girl tap the answer that Nettie herself had been about to select - and then her arm broke out in BOILS! So that was likely NOT the answer. Wow. Close one. That looked painful, and itchy. She subconsciously began to scratch her own wrist as she pondered the rest of the answers.

It was actually a lot easier than it had seen upon first glance. Having them say yes was really all you needed. It was up to THEM if they listened to your explanation and knew what they were getting themselves in to. So she tapped that one.

Hanna came through the second door and, again, stopped short. There was a wooden door, but they couldn't just go through it. No. There was another piece of parchment, with another question. Hanna, wand still firmly in hand, looked over the question and provided answers.

The previous question had something about informed consent, too. The first was ethics. All but the final one seemed to be good steps in the process of gaining informed consent. One had to first ask the question. There had to be some kind of question in order to require informed consent, right? And one had to discuss all of the risks, including allergies, before allowing the person to consume the potion. Otherwise you could keep that to yourself, ask your friend who you know is allergic to peanuts, watch them swell up and stop breathing and claim you had got informed consent. That was important. The person had to know whether anything bad would happen, clash with allergies. And of course, of course, they had to say yes.

So, no, it definitely wasn't the last one. She tapped the second choice which seemed to encompass most of what she thought informed consent was all about. Making sure your friend fully understands what the potion is and does, including any risks, before putting in their drink.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

Dorian glared at the back of Zoryn's head as she got in front of him to protect herself from the drizzle coming from the ceiling but he said nothing about it. It would only mentally drain him to try and win over Zoryn's stubbornness.

As the door opened, Dorian stepped through it and sighed as another door greeted him. A wooden one. At least he wasn't alone with the Gryffindor anymore but before he walked to the parchment to read the next question, he had taken out his wand from out of his sleeve and had pointed it at himself and did a complicated wave and felt the hot air charm dry his damp clothes and hair. Much better.

Keeping his wand in his hand, the Ravenclaw waited for Hanna to choose her answer before he decided on one as well and he tapped the Making sure your friend fully understands what the potion is and does, including any risks, before putting in their drink answer with the wand.

Daisy was now standing in front of a third door, carefully reading and re-reading the piece of parchment in front of her. This latest scenario was stumping her a bit. There were a couple of answers that she immediately eliminated in her mind. She pointed her wand at "None of the above" and hoped that nothing disastrous would happen to her.

Next Vivienne tried to enter the third door. She read the question and thought, "Hmm, informed means they know it's happening, right?" So she pointed her wand at "Making sure your friend fully understands..." The door opened and she then awaited her 4th clue.

Zoryn watched as Dorian dried himself off and decided to do the same. Maybe being stuck on the same level with a nerd wasn't terrible after all. He provided good cover from the wet. And also good ideas to get rid of the wet.

Ugh.

BUT HER HAIR.

Noble would rue this. If he thought she was a pain in the butt before just wait until she.... UGH ANOTHER QUESTION????? This was TORTURE.

Zoryn read over all of the answers, informed consent. Meaning they know and they say yes. Right? Right. Okay then blah blah blah, she picked none of the above. This was dumb. Could they leave now? She needed to fix her hair.

Patrick looked at the parchment looking around at the people coming toward the third door and those who were going out of it.

He needed to get into the room he was tired of doors and starting to feel a bit claustrophobic.

Tapping the answer about making sure the person knew ALL the side effects and repercussions. He assumed that was the correct answer. He hoped to Merlin it was the correct answer because he was tired of doors.

Wait was he wrong. Was it supposed to be none? no he stuck with his answer.
