Location: Greenhouse One, Day: Thursday, Time: 9.00 AM
Winter has come to Hogwarts and since the start of the week snow has been falling steadily each day, turning Hogwarts into something white and mesmerizing, if looked at from the outside. The temperatures have dropped below zero and the castle is as it best being heated up by torches, fireplaces and the occasional heating charm, but still a little chilly and drafty. On the grounds Professor Wishart has worked tiredly each day this week to keep the snow off the bigger paths and to make sure the plants, trees and creatures aren’t suffering in the now turned winter landscape of Scotland.
As you trudge into the classroom of Greenhouse One that is warm and cozy and stomp off the snow from your feet upon entrance you notice that the greenhouse looks more like the school’s hospital wing run by Professor Adara then a place for working with plants and fungi. Not to worry though, there are still potted brown stalked and leaved plants insight on each student work table waiting for their carers. The worktables are set in a half circle formation of several rows facing the numerous hospital beds surrounded by privacy screens to let the patients have some peace for now.
Professor Wishart is sitting on the edge of his desk wearing purple work robes for the day (don’t ask!) sipping on a hot mug of tea as he wait’s for the arrival of his students.

Plants was not something that Nettie felt totally confident in. However, she had had her fair share of sunburns on family vacations, and knew exactly what she was going to answer. She raised her hand.
"Aloe is a plant with great healing properties. It's especially good for sunburns," she explained.

Could anyone tell that he secretly really loved Herbology? He should’ve been proud of it, his Da was a Herbologist after all but sometimes people judged him for it and so he chose to keep quiet about it most of the time. It was the sad state of reality, people were still scared to be themselves.
Moving along..
Oooooh. So that was why the Greenhouse looked like a hospital ward. Made sense.
Professor Wishart asked a question and Caolan searched his brain for an appropriate answer that hadn’t already been mentioned. Everyone seemed to be going down the muggle route so he decided to go with something magical. He raised his hand but JUST as he was about to say his answer bloomin’ Max Cardon got there first. Urgh, of course it was him. “Dittany..” he repeated because he wasn’t letting HIM get all the credit. ”..or the Burning Bush can be applied topically or eaten to help fresh skin grow across wounds and when mixed with silver can even heal werewolf bites making it a vitally important herb for healing” That was all.

"Peppermint is good for headaches," did Professor Wishart have any? Because this class was a headache. Also, when was the last time she had ever given a serious answer in a class?
This was a moment for CELEBRATION. Class canceled, everyone! Zoryn actually TRIED today. Could they leave now please? Because this was just about all the effort she had in her for today. It was better than nothing. Professor W best be counting his blessings.
She didn't want to play plant hospital.

"I actually am pretty cold Professor. Sure i'll warm up here shortly." he said off hand before the start of the lesson. He was just starting to get warmed up when Professor Wishart began the lesson. Plants with healing properties.
He knew about aloe because he had to use it all of the time when he got sun burnt during the summers playing baseball. He raised his hand, "Ginkgo leaves extract help with asthma or bronchitis." He paused not sure how he wanted to mention the next part, "if you don't use the extract properly you could induce seizures." he grimaced at the thought of causing seizures from not properly using the leaf.
This whole set up was weird. So weird that Józef definitely trying to work out if there were actual injured people present that they were supposed to be looking after. Honestly, who would trust a bunch of kids if they were really sick? He wouldn't, not really, even if he had told Jackson he'd come to him to see if he could deal with blood.
Not that that counted. Not really. Jó wouldn't have been surprised if the other kid fainted - he'd heard of people doing that.
As for the question... Well, even if the second year hadn't been twirling his pencil between his fingers (he'd learnt not to do that with his want the hard way - sparks burned!), he didn't know any answers.

As much as Mary enjoyed this class, she was wondering quite a bit about the setup of this room. It looked somewhat like a magical version of a hospital to her, but that was just a guess. As she continued to look around the room, the class began.
She soon learned that the room was like this because they were learning about healing plants and immediately began going over what she knew about healing plants in her head. After the question was asked, she already knew what her answer was going to be. "There is a magical plant called Jewelweed that is often used in medical dressings meant to get rid of fungus. I don't know if it's very effective, but it is technically a healing plant."

Valencia raised her hand. "There's ginger. It's good for nausea." In fact, there was a muggle soda made with ginger that people sometimes drank when they were sick.
Perks of having muggle doctor grandparents.
Magical stuff she wasn't as sure about. Mum and dad didn't let her play around with the potions cabinet. Something about her dad having a bad experience growing up?

It was pleasantly warm in the greenhouse, and Chloe was glad to be out of the cold weather. And Herbology was soothing... it was one of those things that made sense all the time. The rules of planting and growing made sense all the time.
She took in the surroundings as the professor introduced the lesson and as her classmates shared plants with medicinal purposes. Honestly, she knew most of those listed, and even grew a few of them at home. Peppermint! That was a good one!

Healing plants. That definitely explained why the greenhouse looked like the Hospital Wing. Jade was looking forward to studying plants with healing properties - the knowledge would come in handy in the future when she was off adventuring around the world!
"I heard the leaves of a Shrivelfig have medicinal properties," the Ravenclaw said with her hand raised in the air.
Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when
Daisy was performing two tasks at once. While she listened to the answers given by her classmates, a list of medicinal plants both magical and non-magical was running through her mind. She then raised her hand. "Moly is a magical plant that is one of the components of a Wiggenweld Potion. Eating this plant can reverse the effects of spells."
Looking up at Professor Wishart she smiled. " I'm doing fantastic, isn't the snow just beautiful?" she asked him happily before taking her seat. It might be cold sure, but she loved this time of year, the first snow fall was so magical to her. Although that was just her opinion on it, but then again she was odd and weird to most people. A season that she hated and it hated her was summer, don't get her wrong she loved being with her parents and family, but the sun had her.
Listening to Professor Wishart she realized that she was right in some sense of a way, that made her happy. Stella knew quite a bit about herbs and plants used to heal things, but she was drawing blank on and most were called mentioned already. Raising her hand she bit her lip. " My grandma uses Lavender, the oil that is, it's antibacterial helps with pain and itching as well as promotes rapid healing on scars." she said remaining silence not knowing if that was a good answer or not.

Tina had just enough time to get settled before the lesson began, and the professor got right to the point of the lesson. Well, this was a refreshing change of pace! Usually the teachers here kept everyone in suspense about the lesson subject for as long as possible.. either that or they turned it into a guessing game.Tina was pleased; not only had Professor Wishart revealed the subject upfront, but she'd correctly guessed the lesson just by looking at her surroundings (though the hospital layout was a huge give away). they were learning about healing plants. Healing plants that cure people, not healing the plants themselves.
Usually when a professor asked a question, Tina needed a minute or two to think of a suitable answer, but now her mind was buzzing with possibilities. How was she supposed to name just one? Living at Chateau Croyance for as long as she had taught her a lot about healing plants, both magical and muggle. The older children were expected to help the staff care for the younger ones, so there were many times she'd been asked to help fetch an herb or potion. After a minute, Tina's hand shot into the air. "What about feverfew, Professor?" she said when called on. "It, as the name sort of hints, was traditionally used to treat fevers, though today it's also used for migraines and arthritis."

Learning about plants and herbs that helped aid in healing during the winter months was a good idea. The more she knew about being able to help herself the less she would have to depend on anyone else. Plants were her thing too so this was certainly a win win situation for her.
Rylee wasted no time in jotting down any notes. Not that it was necessary right now. "There's always Valerian, Professor. It's a root that helps lessen anxiety and is also used to treat sleeplessness," she answered rising her hand. It was also used to flavor food and drinks in the U.S. but that had nothing to do with the current question. There was no need in getting ahead of herself with her answers.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
Plants with healing powers? Dorian knew of a few but even though his hand was in the air, he hadn't had the chance to say his answer and before he knew it, the most obvious ones had been mentioned by the other students. He slowly lowered his hand back down when it shot back up, a determined look in his eyes for he knew of one that had not been mentioned before.
"St. John’s Wort" he said. "Its a yellow flower that can be used to treat bruises and sores but it can also be made in to tea and it has possibly an natural anti-depressant activity. So its good for the body and mind" how he knew this? Because he knew that his father drank the tea from time to time. But that was personal information no one really needed to know. "I heard it taste disgusting though..."
Even if Herbology wasn’t his favorite, Jackson always had to admire the professors that took pride in their work and were happy to be there. Healing plants, eh? Jackson appreciated that. As a Sixth year, he was actually surprised that they hadn’t learned more about healing plants sooner! Obviously the layout made sense now, and although Plants or herbs… Well… “There’s milk thistle, which can be used to help the liver and helps with cholesterol too.” His grandmother was a big advocate for milk thistle and lavender.

Hanna silently agreed that Herbology was a wonderful subject. All of the plants, herbs, and fungi. Even the fungi. She wasn't overly surprised to learn they would be working on healing plants, having observed the class, but it was exciting that they were going to be working on healing plants, rather than the set up being a trick.
First thing was healing herbs and plants. She knew a fair bit about this from her uncle, during the times he would babysit her. He usually let her help with the garden, and she got to brew some simple potions, mostly with his help. Some of them came right to her mind as she listened to others. She raised her hand to give her answer. "The bubotuber plant. Well... the pus that it produces. It can help heal pimples if it's dilute enough."

Blinking in surprise at first, Derf brushed thoughts aside and simply tried to settle in for the lesson. Herbology still always had him on edge...and this setting was, well, it wasn't particularly helping matters all THAT much, you know?
Scratching a bit more, all Derf could think about were plants with saps and whatnot that could help with irritated skin. Like...he remembered dad using some fern or another when the blonde had brushed up against a not-so-nice plant when he was little. The sting to his leg had been awful, but crumbling up the leaves of the fern and rubbing it over the area had helped loads. Only..Derf couldn't remember the name of either in the moment. He was a bit too zoned out and tending to his neck. There were LOADS of plants that could cause a rash to your skin, you know? He had to wonder if he had come in contact with any of those while wandering the grounds or something...because this itch was becoming a bit...annoying, to say the least.
Most of the answers he could think up, however, had already been offered up. Lavender, something his mum often used. Dittany, the most obvious to come to mind. Shrivel figs...because of his dad and it was also something mum often called him when they were arguing...
Yeah...he would just sit - er, scratch - this one out.

"Not at all, sir." Abra shook his head, because no. Not a fan of snow at ALL. He got himself settled, even got out parchment and a quill for the notes he wouldn't end up taking, and waved at various friends and familiar faces as they entered the greenhouse. Mostly, though, he was just basking in the warmth.
Anyway, right. The lesson, then. Once it was time to get started, Abra focused his attention on Professor Wishart for real and listened. Oh... healing plants... uhhhhh...
He raised his hand somewhat tenatively. "Doesn't a dock leaf help if you get stung by a stinging nettle? I don't actually know how true that is, but I know muggles try it." It would be cool if it DID work though.

Her hair was damp, fresh snow clinging to her long brown locks. Gloved hands brushed off the snowflakes as best she could, but the damage had been done. She'd be plaiting back her long mane as soon as she was seated.
"Morning Professor," She offered along with a tentative smile. Would they be studying medicinal plants today? She'd think on that as she got settled in a seat towards the right of the room.
...
Oh, so she'd been right. There were lots of plants with medicinal properties, many that her own mother had used for different things when she'd first gotten sick. It was because of this that Vita had no shortage of answers to give.
"Aloe, Professor. I've seen it used on burns and irritated skin."
'Good morning Ms Marin.ä Professor Wishart had greeted with a welcoming smile a few minutes earlier.
Vita was later the first to raise her hand and give an answer to the first question. Turning his gaze to the Ravenclaw Professor Wishart smiled wide. "Very good Vita. Aloe is used in medicin as well as skin and hair products since it has healing properties and can as you meantioned be used on burns and against irritated skin." Maybe something Derf and Sterling should use?

"Good Ashleigh! Rosemary has since the middle ages been used for helping with remembering when your memory is a bit clouded or so. His mother was a Healer, so despite being terrible at Herbology, he'd picked up a thing or two when it came to healing. "There's dittany, sir. Good for wounds I've heard."
"Excellent Maxton, dittany has quite a few healing properties and healing wounds is one of them." Professor Wishart said with a wink and an encouraging glance towards the prefect. He was so happy that Maxton was engaging himself when at first he had entered silent as a mouse.

Did he just detect a bit of something something in Caolan’s voice which was directed at Maxton. Was there bad blood blood brewing there perhaps? Professor Wishart had no time to dvelve on that more since Caolan supplied a very good answer. Gingko leaves was another unusual healing plant to be brought up but maybe someone had been reading their textbook? Nodding to Patrick Prof W responded kindly. "Good, good Patrick. Gingko leaves can help with breathing problems but if you use more of the leaves that what is the recommended dosage then yes it can in the worst cases induce seizures." He shuddered at the thought. Plants were supposed to heal not damage.

Valencia’s hand came up next and she brought up a muggle plant. Smiling Professor V responded "That’s correct Valencia, ginger soda or tea is often given to those that feel nauseous to make the nausea go away, sometimes it works." Unless of course the nausea was a prelude to another illness like say a stomach bug.

OOC: Question 2 is up! Just have your student think of other uses for dittany or situations where using dittany can be beneficial to solve a problem or situation. Brainstorm, be creative! All answers are accepted both correct, wrong and quirky. Catching up is allowed throughout the lesson. Lesson will move on in ca 24 hours.

Max scoped out Caolan and gave the Ravenclaw boy an incredibly pleased with himself albeit stupidly childish smug face. Had he heard that? They were learning about dittany. He'd totally just gone and beaten Caolan to the best answer in class. Who was better? Him. Hah.
The other boy may have had the muscles, but Max totally had the brain so take that, Wilson.
Still feeling pretty darn smug with himself, Maxton turned back to Wishart just in time to hear the next question. His arm shot in the air again, except this time he definitely hadn't given his answer much thought. "I reckon I could've done with it that one time I slipped on a gobstone and got a boo boo on my elbow."
Yep, he'd just gone and said boo boo out loud. Oops.

Alessandro listened attentively to his classmates as they listed off healing plants. Some of which he knew and others that he did not. But the one the professor landed on, dittany, he knew well. His mother kept a bottle of it in their kitchen when he was a child, for any cuts and bruises that happened out in the garden.
He had, once, seen his father use it for another purpose all-together. With that in mind, Alessandro raised his hand, "It can be used as an anti-inflammatory." His little sister had a terrible allergic reaction, once; and, after they had her all sorted, their father had given her some dittany to keep the swelling down.

Was there another polyjuice!Max prank going on here because... This was absolutely unfathomable. SO unfathomable, in fact, that Zoryn didn't even hear the next question. It all just went over her head.

Dittany made fresh skin grow over open wounds? Whoa. That was extremely useful. Although she couldn't really think about what situation she'd get herself in that she would need some new skin ASAP. Still, she tried to think of something and then raised her hand.
"I guess if you...accidentally sliced your finger cutting up potions ingredients, or making dinner, you could use it if it was a really deep cut that didn't stop bleeding to take care of it," she explained. Or if you got stabbed, but she felt that was a bit too...gruesome for the class. Why was that all she could come up with?!
Also, did Prefect Max just say boo boo? Um. Ok.

Caolan was trying his best to ignore the smug look he was getting from the other side of the Greenhouse. Had he not been in a lesson he might of given him a right look back or said a few choice words but as it happened they were in his favourite lesson and he didn’t really fancy getting penalised for some stupid beef he had with the Slytherin Prefect. His answer had been correct anyway and it was far more detailed than Max’s.
He had muscles AND the brains thank you very much.
The lesson moved on as Professor Wishart talked about Dittany and it’s uses a little more and proceeded to ask a further question which was swiftly answered by the guy who suddenly thought he was a Herbology expert.
The sixteen year old couldn’t even concentrate on coming up with an answer for he was too busy SNORTING audibly at Max’s answer. First of all, he got the image stuck in his head of Max slipping on the gobstone like a gangly newborn giraffe on ice, lanky limbs all splaying in the air as he went down. Second of all.. Booboo?! Really?! This guy was giving HIM this smug ‘I’m better than you’ look and then THAT came out of his gob?
HAHAHAHAHAHA.
Classic.
Anyway.. Back to the lesson. He supposed he had better provide an answer before he got in trouble for laughing at his classmates misfortune (worth it though). He raised his hand slowly and calmly and not all eagerly like someone. “Dittany is an ingredient used in potions like the Wiggenweld potion which helps to heal.” He was trying to think out of the box here.
Mary had a faint impression that the professor might have been a little disgusted by her answer, but she didn't see why he would be. She had gone out of the box with that one and fully intended to do the same with this one.
Scouring her brain for an interesting fact from that paragraph in the textbook, she finally came up with something that would perfectly match her out of the box mood. Dittany is very useful for healing wounds resulting from failed apparition. There. That sounded good.
