Default DADA Lesson - 1 Don't Go Into the Light

It's the first official day of school and the first class at that. Hopefully you took Trent's advise and got yourself some sleep. As the notice stated, you should be properly attired for the practical lesson.

The corridor leading to classroom 104 is quite bright, and the grounds outside the windows appear to be awakening at this relatively early point in the morning. This is a stark contrast to the inside of the classroom. Once you enter, you'll immediately notice that it's no longer nearly 8 am. Indeed, the inside of the classroom depicts a slightly cloudy, night sky.

That's not the only thing strange about the classroom, the setting is void of any desks or chairs. Nothing about the room looks like a classroom, it doesn't look like a room at all but a bog of sorts. It's a dark "night" as the moon is currently being obscured by a cloud with no intention of going anywhere, but Headmaster Trent can be found not too far from the door, lantern in hand, while he waits for the students to come in.

Step lively, there's a full lesson ahead.

OOC: Welcome to the first lesson of the term everyone!! Don't forget to read the classroom rules before posting. I'll have the first question up in 24 hours

The lesson hasn't started yet

CLASS HAS BEGUN!

Class progression:
- Replies
- Replies and Question 1
- Question 2 + walking
- Start of Mini-Activity: Get in boats
- Mini-Activity: Follow the light
- Mini-Activity: You get a light and you get a light
- Main Acitivity: Practical

Fourth option?

Not follow the lights by rather the sounds?

Septimus was listening to what Camilus had to say…and Malachi seemed to almost agree with. This was an equal opportunity boat, he and Skyler were just the oldest. And he had kinda taken charge of things. “Well Headmaster Trent DID say to follow his voice,” the fourth year Ravenclaw agreed with that part of the thoughts. “Buuuut he also said to look for his lantern. Both things seem to be important.” Which was what was so confusing and cause for discussion.

Before he could think more on the subject however he was winching at the very loud SCREECCCCCHHH coming from where they had started. Rubbing his ears to get the ringing out, Septimus was distracted away from his lantern watching. Which wasn’t very good when another light had joined the others making a fourth out in the distance. And then there was fog and converging lights and the Ravenclaw was struggling to place the one he wanted.

“Right…or still straight?” he asked the group as they floated for a little bit.
Malachi looks at the lights and listens, trying to hear the head master before looking at Septimus. "I think we should go straight and keep listening, but that’s just what I think what about you two?" He looks at camilus then Mary.

Okay, Natalie agreed with going straight. That was good, that was... he could do that. Maybe. Actually, that was maybe another reason that Abra was glad for confirmation that forward was... well... the way forward; he didn't think he would be very good at trying to steer the boat just yet. Maybe once he'd got the hang of this, but certainly not yet.

Abra was absolutely not listening to what the headmaster's voice was actually saying at this point, as focused as he was on just trying to follow the general sound of it, ears straining against the echoes. And then...

... the screech.

It rang out suddenly behind them, and Abra's heart leapt, and so did he, just a little bit. Like, enough that they should all be glad that the boat was charmed to stay upright. Maybe there was a little bit of a yELP in there too. And he dropped his oar, which was just fantastic.

So... suffice it to say, he'd managed to get distracted by the screech, not that it mattered, as he'd already lost track of what light they were following to begin with.

Hurrying to pick up his oar again, Abra worked double time with it, slicing it through the water to try and help their boat get forward and away from that scream as quickly as possible. He hadn't even thought about which light to follow, and was... really really hoping someone else had a better idea than he did. His frantic rowing, however, was starting to drag their boat towards the right, so... was that a SIGN?

Merlin, Abra really didn't feel well equipped enough to be making suggestions on which way they should be going, but he had to say something. "I think I've pulled us to the right a bit. Do we keep going right or try to follow those other two lights?" Nobody needed to know he'd lost the correct lantern, he wasn't going to say it out loud... but it was probably glaringly obvious by now.

"I-I don't either," she said. Nope. Not a dark night in a bog.

Her body did an automatic FLINCH when she heard the scream. Every muscle tightened. It was a good thing she'd only had a small breakfast, or that would have probably been vomited out. "What was that!?" she squeaked out, looking behind her in the dark.

"Wh-which way should we go?" She turned back to face the Professor or... so she thought. She had lost tabs on which one she believed to be Professor Trents.
It turned out that it was really hard to keep eyes on a lantern in the dark and fog. Especially when they were rowing and the boat was jostling and poor Hanna looked terrified. It was especially difficult to pay attention to the lanterns when Chloe was trying to comfort the younger girl.

"Remember we're in the classroom. We're safe. This is an exercise, and we're learning from it. Just keep your eyes on the lantern in the middle and listen for the professor's voice. Or, if you're scared, you watch me, and I'll do those things." She smiled hugely at the younger girl. All was well, ok?

But really, which lantern was it?

Camilus, considering what his boat mates had said, suddenly had a thought pop into his head.

"Hey, does anybody know if Hinkypunks like to travel in pairs or alone?"

Maybe, if the answer was that they traveled in pairs, then they should stick to the light that was traveling alone. But wait, how many lights were traveling alone now?

Okay, this was freaky. Torii had to admit it. This lesson was as exciting as some of the ones she'd seen at Ilvermorny. So Hogwarts might be as great as Ilvermorny, but again, she wasn't willing to fully admit that. Not yet. She tried to pay attention to the Headmaster's voice and light, but it was getting kind of difficult. The lights were starting to move together, and Torii wasn't completely sure she was following the right one.

But she had a boat full of four other people, so there was that!

"Yeah," she whispered to Igor, as she heard him ask if they'd heard the noise. Ohhh, yeah. Loud and clear. Thank Merlin there were older kids in this boat. Not that Torii was admitting she was scared or anything, though... "Just...just follow the light." The correct one, preferably.

"Wait, we're going...right?" she asked. Wasn't everybody else going left? "Okay...okay." She was breathing a little faster as she said that. "Right, it is." Because nobody else was sharing any ideas, and the Headmaster would save them if this ended up being the decision-of-doom, right?

Right.

Literally.

BLOODY HELL!

Loosing hold on his oar at that screech, Derf covered his ears that felt like they may bleed from the noise. Yikes, was that what it could feel like hearing a fwooper's call in full? Was he going to go insane now? What WAS that? Though the headmaster's voice continued on ahead...er...well...it continued, though Derf wasn't entirely sure WHICH direction it had come from. Only that the light they were following was continuing on its stead pace ahead. So...that was promising, yeah?

Glancing around at his boatmates, the seventh year retrieved its oar (which thankfully had fallen to the floor of the boat and not into the water) and turned to look towards the Slytherin as he spoke.

Left though? Because Zac was sure he heard the professor from the other direction. He looked at the puff head boy in confusion - but nodded anyway, following the instruction.

And then there was the scream.

Merlin.

"So definitely away from the scream and toward the light?" he asked blondie.
"Yeah, agreed," he nodded, his eyes now peering back into the foggy scene ahead to pin point the light. He could see the others moving about in his peripheral vision...but a lot of that seemed FAR too quick for one of these boats to move...so yes. Staying the course with their first veer left seemed best. And away from the shore and that screech.

His eyes continued to dance over all his classmates, most still obscured by darkness. Luckily, the man seemed to take note of this and juiced up his flame a bit... Ah, that was much better!

Aaron all but slung himself into the boat with his cousin (Abra) the Slytherin Prefect (Natalie), and another Slytherin kid (Gunnar) he didn't actually know. It was a no-brainer.

"Hey, guys!" His joyous tone did not match the class aesthetic of doom and gloom.

Harri couldn't even be bothered with the dark and squishing wet noise that her shoes made whenever she took a step because hello, this was supposed to be a classroom and not only did they end up in the swamp lands, they were now getting on boats to cross a river. A river! Inside a classroom. It was so cool. Magic was so cool! And the Headmaster too, since you know, he was probably the one who made this all happen.

As for finding a boat to board, the young Gryffindor sort of just loitered around at first until she saw somewhat of a familiar face. One of the Gryffindor's prefects. Hi, Prefect Abra! As for the other three, she didn't know any of them but they all looked to be older. She waved at them and offered a wide smile. "Hi, I'm Harri!" Let's get to rowing!

Had to be sure no one tried over-loading a boat but also needed to do some evening out. "Miss Hufflepuff Captain, I'd like you to join either that boat," The one containing the Gryffindor female prefect, "or that one over there." With the Head Boy. They were about to leave the shoreline. One boat could hold one more person and the other had space for two. There was no reason for her to stay in a boat by herself when there were five oars.

He waited a moment for the last few to shuffle in where they needed to be and take their oars in hand if they hadn't already before giving the command. "Everyone, follow me. Remember what I've said."

It was dark, but not so dark that they couldn't make out silhouettes. They would have no issues avoiding each others' boats while they travelled. "I'll give you lot a quick rundown of the year's curriculum. It's nothing to be concerned about in the moment, just a means to keep my voice out there for you." Malachi rowed on, his lantern floating and following him into the darkness. Team work and quick thinking would be their best friend especially given the fog that settled in, obscuring the man and his boat. Only the lantern remained. It shun bright enough that the fog did very little to it.

Just a minute into the rowing, another light appears next to the Headmaster's. It dances around the first light before slowlyyy drifting away from the original lantern. Or was IT the original lantern? Either way, it's begun to veer off toward the left. Do you follow or keep straight?

To make matters worse, there's now a third light. It starts where the left light is but slowly drifts over to the one that continues straight. Both lights continue in this direction. Keep your eyes on them unless you don't believe either to be the Headmaster's. Should you have gone left? The lights aren't so far apart that the distance of the voice makes a difference yet. With how close they currently were, the voice could be coming from any of the three. All of them? Hopefully you've been watching.

OOC: second leg of the mini activity! Lights will be appearing and disappearing, you're kiddos will have to decide which to follow in low visibility. It;ll require concentration on their part but mistakes are fine too. I'll be back with more lights in maybe 18 hrs.

"Hey!" he greeted everyone as they appeared. "I'm Abra." Well, Aaron and Natalie already knew that, and probably so did Harri, if she remembered him and Stasya introducing themselves before escorting the Gryffindor first years to the common room on the first night of term. Actually, maybe Gunnar also knew him from Quidditch, making the introduction sort of totally redundant actually. Uhhh... Oh. Well. This wasn't awkward at all...

With their boat now full, Abra turned his attention to the Headmaster and awaited instructions. They came relatively quickly, and Abra scrambled to pick up an oar so that he could get started with rowing the boat after the man in charge. He was still a little hesitant about the concept of following the hinkypunk in disguise guy with the lantern, but hey, what could you do?

Rowing turned out to be a lot more difficult than it looked. Abra couldn't tell what it was about it, but he was terrible at getting into a rhythm and making sure the oar was going into the water and not getting the whole situation backwards. In fact, he had to stop looking ahead and instead look down at his hands and the oar for a moment, to sort of get used to what he was trying to do, but then, when he looked up, there was more than one lantern light up ahead.

Oh. Oh no. Ohhhhhhhh nooooooooooo.

Looking between the light that was off to the left, and the two straight ahead, Abra panicked for a moment. He wanted to glance around at the others, but he dared not take his eyes away from the lights again. Now what?

"Um..." Abra said, trying not to sound quite so strained as he didn't want to alarm anyone, especially not the first year in the boat. "Straight... straight ahead, right?" Please let someone else have been paying attention. Maybe he could blag his way through this.

But one thing was sure: Natalie was not emotionally attached to any of these people and if something attacked, she was going to sacrifice all of them first before it got to her.

Sorry. Not sorry.

Then it was time to follow the Headmaster and Natalie was sincerely (STILL) hoping that it wasn't going to be like last time with the redcaps. She couldn't really read the Headmaster that well, but he didn't seem as psychotic as the last one, so surely they wouldn't die, right?!?!

Oar in hand, Natalie started paddling out, watching the light of the Headmaster's wand intently, trying not to lose focus. She was glad he kept talking though, so she could tell that his voice was ahead. But then another light appeared right next to the first one. Uh oh. Natalie moved her eyes back to the original light and tried not to blink so she wouldn't get them confused. But then it moved around the first one and then ONE of them moved around and moved away from their original path. And THEN, to make matters worse, ANOTHER light appeared and Natalie's blood pressure rose as her anxiety increased.

The third light joined what she was pretty sure was the Headmaster's light, and to her relief, she heard Abra say (or ask) to continue straight. Natalie nodded. "Err, yeah. I think so. Straight." So she kept paddling, going straight ahead.

As he’d said to them many times before getting to this point, they needed to pay attention to both.

The problem with terrain like this was voices tended to travel and sometimes that made it difficult to pinpoint their direction. Similarly, with new lights appearing, it was hard to ever REALLY be sure. It was best to fixate on both.

SCREEEEEEEECCCHHHHHHHHH!

Suddenly, a loud piercing scream can be heard. It sounds like it’s coming from the same direction they’d been coming from, back near the shore. What was it? Who possibly. Whatever the case, it was loud and chilling.

In that second, the two lights that continued straight began to separate. The one going left continued at an even pace but the other two were joined by a third. The fog thickens and the lights that carry the same level of light intensity converge briefly as they cross paths.

One veers of the right, the other two continue going straight. The Headmaster’s voice echoes. Going right....? Keeping straight? It was not too late to catch up with the light going left. If you weren’t too distracted by the scream, there’s a chance you may have noticed which light went where.

OOC:Next light post is up and another light has joined the party as they head deeper into the bog. Choose wisely I’ll post up the consequences sporadically but no worries this is still the mini activity and you can jump right into whatever’s happening ^^

Nobody needed to know he'd lost the correct lantern, he wasn't going to say it out loud... but it was probably glaringly obvious by now.
This was probably the worst lesson for him to be distracted in.

Gunnar was rather glad that there were a couple older students in the boat that he chose as he figured they could be in charge and he could just marinate in his consuming thoughts. He'd try to pay attention too, and maybe learn something in the process, but that would likely be secondary. And after giving the rest of his boat mates the appropriate greetings, he grabbed his oar and lifted his eyes to Headmaster Trent. Rowing wasn't too hard, and he thought he got the hang of it rather quickly, but it was rather difficult to get into the same rhythm as four other people.

.....uh. Wait. Gunnar looked up towards where he thought the Headmaster was again. Was that light his? Or was it that light? He glanced towards Abra who suggested straight and then to Natalie who seemed to agree, so he nodded, trusting that they had been paying better attention than him. "Yeah, I think straight." And he continued to row along with them, moving the boat forward.

Okay, he'd try to pay better attention now.

There were several lights now though, appearing and reappearing, and it was hard to really know which one. And then... his blood ran cold at the sound of the scream. What was that?? Gunnar's eyes were wide, but he was resolved to not look behind him. He tried to keep his eyes on what he thought was the correct lantern, but who could even be sure at this point.

The right lantern? Still feeling the chill from the scream, Gunnar glanced to Abra. "I kind of thought it was the left one... but I'm not really sure," he admitted. And he didn't want to be responsible for leading them the wrong way. So, uh, yeah, someone else decide.

"Hey, guys! So everyone grab an oar, and we'll..." She was interrupted as they lurched into motion, and the professor began to instruct them from his own boat. Only, was his boat disappearing into the fog? All they could see now was the light from his lantern, and then there were two, and then three! THREE!

"Guys... uh... Kaitlyn, why don't you watch the lanterns and try to remember which one is the professor? And the rest of us should try to keep up, because I don't fancy a soggy night in the bogs."

It was the time the professor decided to begin their journey. The fog seemed thick and Kaitlyn couldn’t see anything but the light from the professor’s boat. His voice echoed, guided them what to do. The only problem was it was hard to follow him in this fog. She grabbed an oar but when she was distracted, the light started to split into two. One turned left while the other one, which was joined by another light, kept going straight. Hearing her name, she turned to Chloe. ”I’m not sure right now. I was distracted but I guess we should go straight”. However, the scream interrupted her, which made her scared to death. ”What was that?”, she started to panic. Listening to Chloe trying to calm someone else didn’t help at all. They were not going to die, were they?

If they didn’t hurry up rowing there was going to be a puddle on the inside of the boat as well as the outside. He grumbled under his breath about needing to keep his legs crossed for the rest of the journey now instead of concentrating on what direction they should go.

“Yeah I’ll agree with the majority” he nodded at Stella who had actually bothered to introduce herself. She looked like the sort of person that would be paying attention. And the small kid, Lucas agreed too and young kids weren’t worn down by education enough yet so they almost always tried extra hard, right? Maybe not but at least Lucas was putting effort into rowing the boat unlike some people so he trusted his opinion more..

Caolan? Okay, so, that was one person he was sure he didn't know. "Lucas," he piped up, even if he was sure that the boy wouldn't know him either. He did recognise Stella's voice, though, which instantly made him smile. Hello!

Before he could say anything, he was being handed something? Something that felt like...... wait, was this an oar?

UH.

Lucas squinted down at the oar and then at where one of his biceps were and then back at the oar again. This meant that they had to row and that meant exercise and he was..... not very happy to hear that. He was very scrawny, actually, but maybe, just maybe, this would help him build up some more muscle.

It was with this thought in mind that he dipped the oar into the water and started rowing. It was..... hard work, actually. Very hard! And people did this for FUN?! That, he didn't understand. But then again, there were a lot of things he didn't understand right now.

Like the three lanterns ahead of them.

UH. Please tell him he wasn't the only one who was SCARED right now.

Stay straight? Pee himself?! Despite how he was feeling, Lucas couldn't help but let out a small snort and nodded...... only to realise that the others might not be able to see him so, ended up saying, "Yeah, let's go straight." He didn't have any other ideas, and nothing that was better, so...... straight it was!

Maxton was oblivious to the looks Mr Row Row Row Your Boat Caolan was giving him. Mostly. Okay, he may have noticed a little bit but he was happy pretending that he hadn't.

And besides, there were more important things to worry about right now.

Like that SCREECH that just happened from somewhere behind them.

It was lucky Max was holding his legs so tightly together otherwise he may have peed right there and then.

"What are you waiting for!?" He piped up, an exasperated fidgety mess right now. "Get a move on, let's go faster!" In any direction, he didn't care!

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

Left:

The steady light may have seemed like the right idea at the time but the further and further left you follow, the fainter the Headmaster's voice grows. It won't take you much too long to realize that this may not have been the right path.

It's dark here, save the light of the one lantern you've chosen to follow. It doesn't speed up or slow down, maintaining a steady pace. All is calm--until it suddenly starts raining fireballs on all who've chosen this direction.

It may not be obvious in the moment of panic, but they give off no heat. Should you be struck by one, it feels more like a ghost has passed through you.

The fireballs are sporadic, never aiming for the same boat twice in a row. Finally, the lantern disappears altogether and the only light remaining on what is now clearly a separate leg of the river comes from the raining fireballs.

Straight Ahead:

Both lights look promising. If you've continued along this path, you'll have missed the subtle turn in the river that could have taken you further right.

The lights flicker for only a moment before returning to their consistent glow. Unfortunately, after a bit more rowing, you realize the Headmaster's voice is growing fainter. Whatever direction he'd been in, it's not the one you're heading in.

Before any attempts at turning can be made, balls of "fire" rain down. Scores of fireballs several hitting any boats that have chosen to continue straight. Much like the ones to the left, they don't burn. If nothing else, they cause a slight chill, similar to that of a ghost passing through.

If you happened to catch where the right turn was somewhere in the back and fancy the risk of finding out what made that screech, you can turn around, or you can follow the river, bunker down and hope for the best.

Right:

If you're going right, congratulations. It must come as some relief to realize the Headmaster's voice has remained constant. He is still ahead, the now only one lantern heading down this branch of the river.

The man continues to talk about the curriculum for the year, by now boring even himself. He already knew it all, recalling it now was just unnecessary. Once it'd sufficiently gotten to the man, he began belting show tunes instead. In all this confusion...he....may or may not...have forgotten there were still students around.

In his mind, they'd all gone off on some wrong path. All paths led to the same end so he wasn't worried, just they'd have a more....eventful means of getting there.

Then there was his cousin, who she didn't really know, and then Gunnar, who she only kind of knew and then some other girl who she didn't know at all. It didn't calm her nerves at all.

Oh, introductions within the group! Not that it really mattered, but the small Gryffindor girl had given her name. Seemed rude not to return the favor. "I'm Aaron. It's nice to meet you." He wasn't well-known, so he doubted that was common knowledge. In fact, the Hufflepuff preferred to fly under the radar. Anyway! They were all friends here.

Abra and Natalie had control over their boat, steering-wise, and that was a small relief. Of course, he would've helped his cousin, but for now, he could take the scenic route; enjoy the ride... He didn't find himself as scared as he probably should've been. Not in this classroom, but of the possible circumstances that could be applied to real life. If they weren't currently in school, and the Headmaster wasn't overseeing everything. This only affirmed that Aaron had no business being in bogs at night. Or anytime, truthfully.

He'd gotten distracted by the lull of the gently rocking boat. What?

Oh... Yeah, yeah. He'd totally agreed with going straight, but didn't say as much because...1. he'd not been paying attention and had missed the opportunity for his opinion to matter, and 2. the LOUD SCREECHING NOISE had just startled him so badly he'd knocked back into the side of the boat, nearly sending himself overboard....... What was that?! The shrill sound had carried dramatically, sending a bolt of uncomfortable electricity down his spine and raising all the hairs on his body. .... He was clutching at the boat's side, still grateful that his cousin and the Slytherin girl had it under control.... Or... he thought...they had. The sloshing noise of the oars slicing through the water sounded more frantic than before, and though it was hard to see, Aaron blindly trusted his cousin to see them through safely. Total faith.

..... uh. "If we're pulling right, just go with it. I don't know if over-correcting would help us right now.." They weren't the only boat on the water, and it seemed dangerous to flounder around too much, since they could knock into someone else. Maybe.

But really, which lantern was it?

One turned left while the other one, which was joined by another light, kept going straight. Hearing her name, she turned to Chloe. ”I’m not sure right now. I was distracted but I guess we should go straight”. However, the scream interrupted her, which made her scared to death. ”What was that?”, she started to panic. Listening to Chloe trying to calm someone else didn’t help at all. They were not going to die, were they?

"Right," Taddy was ready to get rowing, it was pretty dark and his eyes were barely adjusting to everything going on. He had took ahold of an oar and helped paddle with the others when he heard a loud screech. Tad flinched, looking around wildly. That was creepy. It was kind of cool, but he too was feeling a little hesitant. "If anything happens, we got enough oars to give them a whack." So that should make things okay, right?

So now they were heading straight and things looked promising. The Headmaster's voice was a bit distant though. Did they need to paddle faster or? "I can't hear him.. do you think we went too far?" Tad asked before suddenly things went bright over head. He looked up, "AAHHH! Look out!" Tad tried to cover his head when what looks like many fireballs began to rain over. Expecting the worst he instead felt a chill rush over him.

Distract them. The headmaster would...

Oh no.

It had only been a moment, a glance over her shoulder, but it had been enough time to make her doubt herself. There were more lights now and ones that were veering off in different directions. Truthfully, Vita had no idea which one was the right one anymore. If this was a challenge, she'd failed. She just hoped the others in her boat had been better at ignoring the distractions.

"I'm not so sure anymore," She admitted to the younger gryffindor girl, her gaze shifting to Indigo in hopes that he'd have a plan. No offense to the small humans, but she trusted him most right now. Plus she didn't want to be the one to make the decision and have it be the wrong one. "What do the rest of you think?"

Indigo did jump a bit when he heard the scream, but he didn't turn back to look at it. He knew that would be a mistake there would be no recovering from. Even without having looked, he was still getting confused. Now there were three straight ahead and one of them was going to the right. It could have been the headmaster? But another light had crossed paths with it enough that Indigo wasn't positive which was which. He was certain, though, that the one to the left was not the correct one. Why was someone suggesting that.

"Not left." That much he was sure. "I think.... straight? But it could be right." He'd let someone else make this decision for them. Though Indigo wasn't sure how to turn this thing so they might end up just going straight by default.

Her hand on her wand, she was about to take it out but remembered what the Headmaster said. Sighing hating every bit of this, she couldn't wait for this class to be over with.

Stella looked at him and rolled her eyes at him, ugh... he was a seventh year? How pathetic... he was so lazy and bossy. That was seventh years for you, thinking that they ran the school and boss around the lower years. She wasn't having it, she didn't care who he was or thought he was. These seventh years think their hot stuff, it made Stella laugh seeing one scared and about to pee himself.

Looking at the others, she looked at the light to the left, it looks promising but it looked like it was going more into the darkness and the fog. It was a steady light but she knew better then to trust it. Her eyes following the light that went to the right she bit her lip. " Ok... guys, is everyone ok?" she asked them shaking a bit. Seeing a laterns going straight and one going right she bit her lip. " I say go right, but that's just me the one that went left looks promising but more a trap to me, cause it's steady a but going into the fog more, the two straight ahead looks like a trap also so I say right but that's just me."

Okaaaaay..

The sudden screech made him jump just the tiniest fraction although he did his best to disguise it. Nobody saw anything right? He stopped rowing momentarily whilst he looked at the others to make sure that they had heard what he had too.

So now Mr Prefect was going to bark orders at them whilst sat on his backside doing nothing? “You see these?” He asked as he shoved an oar onto his lap. “You use them to make the boat go faster..” Was that sarcastic enough? Perhaps instead of telling the rest of the crew what to do he might actually contribute a bit of muscle power to save himself from the embarrassment of wetting himself. Because after the initial disgust of sharing a boat with the puddle, Caolan WAS going to snigger.

Caolan almost wanted to disagree with Stella to get them lost on purpose and make Max have to wait for longer. The headmaster was also droning on about the school curriculum and the kids down the left path looked like they were having way more fun. If it wasn’t for the fact that HE kept thinking about needing the loo he probably would’ve suggested the left path. Stella looked a little nervous too and the fifth-year felt a little sorry for her. He nudged her gently with his arm in some form of an comforting gesture. “You alright kiddo?” What about the others? They were being pretty quiet.

The left one? Abra dared, just for a moment, to look from the lantern he was now focused on - the one that had gone right - back to the lantern Gunnar was referring to. Or, well, the one he thought he was referring to. He had half a mind to agree with the younger boy and start trying (somehow) to redirect their boat around to follow the other lights, and the only thing that was holding him back was just that Gunnar didn't seem to sound any more sure than Abra felt. Also the prospect of trying to turn this thing was... you know...

But then Aaron spoke up, and it was with slightly more conviction than any of them had so far - Abra had half an idea that maybe not everyone was completely sure about the lights, especially since they'd all crossed each others' paths, and so did not want to be the one to call the shots.

"Right, then," he said, trying to sound a bit more like he knew what the heck he was doing. "I mean to say, we'll keep going right." And hope for the best.

Feeling slightly guilty for vetoing Gunnar's suggestion, but silently resolving to go back and follow the Slytherin boy's instincts should their initial decision go wrong - or apologise profusely to him should things go very very wrong and turning around wasn't an option - Abra got back to rowing at a more steady pace this time. Forward they went, following the light on the right.

There were less boats now, probably because they'd all peeled off to follow different lights (which did not exactly inspire much confidence in Abra), but they were hardly alone on the water either. The voice was still up ahead, which was promising, and nothing of note was really happening. That was, until...

"... Is he... is he singing?"

Vita was actually having a little trouble moving them, too, her oar not cooperating the way she'd hoped it would. Surely there was a spell that could do the work for them, although maybe the physical labor was another way to engage all their senses and simulate a real life scenario...who knew. She just knew that they were still going straight as the other lights got further and further away, which meant the decision had sort of been made for them.

...Did anyone else notice that the headmaster's voice wasn't so prominent anymore?

Uh. oh.

"Is it too late to try and turn this thing all the way around?"

...It was only a moment before she got her answer, though it was not the one she'd been hoping for. The fireballs were coming at them and it was all she could do to brace herself for their immediate-

oh.

She shivered, but that was all. They were safe. They were lost, but they were safe.

Thank Merlin.

Jó tugged lazily on the oar, because honestly it seemed that whatever-his-name older-guy-that-wasn't-the-prefect had everything in hand. But he had just had a go at the Prefect, so he had to look busy, of course.

And he was reacting minimally to everything that was going on. Partly because he had zero clue what was going on, partly because he knew that there was no way the Headmaster was going to do anything that would hurt them, and partly because he had to force himself to remain calm and cool. He had an image to keep up!

And when Stella said they should go right? Jó shrugged in non-committal agreement. He would have said straight on, but he didn't actually know, and (although he would never admit it) she was cleverer than him and had been paying attention.

At least he hoped.

Stella felt her snickering at what Coalan said to Mr. Prefect here it was pretty funny to her, if he did pee himself it was four against one, that would be embarrassing thing to remember. Setting the oars down, she rested her arms down. She was a bit tired and hurting from steering but they had get going. She was a second year and was going more then Mr. Prefect was, hmph! Lazy seventh year sitting on his bum barking orders that'll show him! This was a team effort they had to work together, so far it only seems like they were doinv all the work besides Mr. Prefect here.

Stella looked Caolan and shook her head. "Not really, all this darkness and not seeing anything is scaring me." she said honestly biting her lip. She wasn't scared of the dark, she was scared of what was in it. "It's too quiet, and that scares me as well or shall I say it was?" referring to the screeching they heard eariler. "Which way do you think?" she asked him looking around.

It took a moment for Chloe's words to sink in. The classroom. They were in the classroom. Not in a deep, dark forest. "Oh," she said, feeling reassured by Chloe. She nodded. "We're just in the classroom," she repeated to herself. She returned Chloe's smile and tried to look ahead to the middle light, sending her ears out to listen to Professor Trent's voice.

Kaitlyn had also lost track of which boat was Professor Trents, but it seemed Chloe was all up with it. "Straight it is," she echoed. There were five of them. If they were following Professor Trent - great. If not... well they could work that out when they came to it.

She let out a nervous laugh at Taddy's suggestion. Right, oars. "But also wands..." you know. Although her wand was securely in its holster, so an oar would be the most accessible defence against anything. Whether it did the right job or not, she wasn't sure.

It was obvious they had taken the wrong path pretty quickly. Taddy confirmed her fear. Indeed, the Headmaster's voice was getting faint. They were in the classroom, though. They were in the classroom. But then fireballs started raining down on them. They didn't burn though, it was a very unsettling feeling. A ghost-like coldness made her shiver.

"Hey so I'm alright staying on our path even though I can hear the Headmaster say that we aren't following him. This is DADA, maybe we should take advantage of every scary opportunity that comes up so we can learn more?"

Whichever path the group took, Camilus was just excited to be at his first lesson of his Hogwarts career.

Her boat mates had settled a bit, and Chloe was relieved that they had finally pulled together, but her relief was premature. While they'd been panicking, they'd also been fooled by the splitting lights. The professor was clearly drifting away from them, and that lantern there...

The fireballs passed through them, fortunately, but Chloe still shrieked up to the moment she recalled that it wasn't real fire. Not a real bog. Merlin.

"Can we pull to the right and get back on course?" Her voice came out a bit raspy but at least it was steady. "Unless this is an entirely different waterway, in which case, we stay steady and remember... not a real bog." But they were dead, theoretically, and Chloe had led them astray. What a rubbish Head Girl.

She was with older kids, not to mention two Prefects. Harri did take note of her surrounding figures of authority, you know. So this whole rowing business was going to be breeze in the stream, right?

Not...really.

By the time they (as in mostly her boatmates because this first year Gryffindor sort of just sat there doing nothing) had rowed their boat into the water, weird things began to happen. But of course. A lantern there, then a light to the left. Oh wait, it's gone. No, it's there again. No, actually it wasn't that one. So which one? The other one? Uhh...straight ahead? Sure, yeah. Straight ahead. Not like she would be of any help anyway. She was very easily lost when there was light, how much more when the conditions were this dire?

So Harri just nodded and offered a slight smile to her boatmates.

Until that sound.

....Huh. What an awful sound.

Both of her hands went to rub at her ears just as she saw the Prefects jump on their seat, the other boy go stiff, and the one who introduced himself as Aaron almost fall out the boat. It wasn't that scary, was it? She chanced a look behind to where the scream sounded like it came from but saw nothing. "It was probably just a hinkypunk," she told the group collectively. Not like someone was getting eaten or something.

Anyway. They were back to rowing now...veering mostly to the right? Left? Who knew at this point? She was mostly trying to focus on the Headmaster's voice. Singing voice.

She offered the Gryffindor Prefect a shrug. "Maybe. Sounds like he's got a nasty cold though."

See? Everything was fine. Perfectly fine. The headmaster's voice was still rather steady and Drewett allowed himself to relax a tiny bit as he continued to row straight, following the torch that he was sure was the headmaster's.

Until that bloody loud screech made the Ravenclaw immediately shut his eyes in terror. And before his mind could process what he just involuntarily did, Drewett opened his eyes almost immediately and there were already two other lights moving in different directions. There was panic settling in this chest already, and he stopped rowing altogether. If anything, the fourth year was just glad it was too dark for his boat mates to see his hands trembling.

"Oh no... oh no oh no oh no...." He said under his breath. Drewett didn't know what to do and he wasn't rowing anymore. He was accepting his fate now. He was going to die on his first day, on his first class of the term.

Tessa tried to keep the lights in her line of sight AND look at the others in the boat at the same time, you know, to see if they'd been paying better attention to the lights than she had. No answer to her previous question about which light they were going to follow. Even in the dim light, Tessa could tell that Drew was nervous. Well, actually, it was his muttering of 'oh no's that gave it away but that didn't matter. "We'll be fiiiiiiiiiiiine," she assured him and any other of her boatmates that might be feeling nervous. It was just a lesson after all. They weren't likely to get hurt or anything. "We need to keep rowing," she added when she noticed that Drew had stopped rowing. They were definitely going to get lose or, at least, left behind if they stopped. "We'll keep going straight." They had a one-in-three chance of being right. Those were decent odds.

They were free to butt in if they thought they should be following a different light. It might not be too late to change their course. Maybe.

But, for now, the were keeping straight.
