The shadows were lengthening as Kalen walked around the chairs he had set up in a semi circle in front of him, the sun was in its decline and soon the world would be darkened again, but there was still a few hours of sunlight left, enough time for the lesson the Astronomy Professor had set up down by the banks of the lake.
He nodded at his work and made sure the mild heating charms were in place before he took his place beside a small table that was his makeshift desk for the afternoon.
Despite the early October date, it was getting a bit chilly and the wind off the lake was brisk, but the charms should hold and he could increase them if was needed.
There were no food or drinks present at this lesson, even his own precious cup of tea wasn’t anywhere to be seen. There may have been new leadership, but Kalen wasn’t taking any chances.
He leaned against the table and checked his watch again. Students should be arriving at any moment.
OOC: Welcome to Astronomy class!. Just remember that even though this is the first Rp’d class this is not your first class with Professor Kennedy! So Astronomy, yeah?
Lucas wrapped his coat a little tighter around himself as he walked down to the lake. It was almost hot chocolate weather, he could FEEL it. And he silently wished he did have a cup of hot chocolate with him while he was walking but certain, uh, events from last term kept coming back to him and he decided that maybe that wasn’t such a good idea.
Still. He knew what he was getting after this lesson was over. Mmm.
Approaching the spot by the lake, he gave the Professor a small smile. "Hello Professor," he said quietly before choosing a seat riiiiiiight over......... there. Yeah. Not too close to the lake but close enough that he could look over if the class got boring. Maybe.
But if they really were learning about stars then maybe he didn’t need to bother.

Kalen had to hold back a grin as Abra couldn’t decide if it was afternoon or good evening. “Good afternoon Mr. Botros, I think it’s afternoon for a little longer. ” He said with a warm smile. Afternoon and evenings were hard, but anywhere after five was evening, to him at least.

Being new wasn’t easy, being new and not fully knowing what to do was worse!

Kalen nodded at the older Ravenclaw as she followed after a few students, “Hello Miss Dantes. ” He said with a warm smile as he caught sight of perhaps a ghost of a smile on the girls lips. He would take it!

When she finally did make it to the meeting spot, she was out of breath, hair disheveled, and feeling like the world's biggest dummy. The fresh air felt nice, at least. It could help cool her down after the unnecessarily rigorous exercise session she'd just put her body through. "H-hello Professor." It wasn't that she was afraid of the girl or anything. The sixth year hadn't really interacted with her at all. It was just...well, Zoryn had a reputation for mischief and Vita wasn't exactly the type to find that fun. She didn't have anything planned for this lesson, did she? The brunette side-eyed the older girl briefly and then caaaaasually looked the other way.
“Hello Miss Mallari. ” Kalen said by way of greeting. The girl looked like she had run down here and he hoped she didn’t think she was late! There was still a few moments before class began.

Kalen was pleased with the turnout and and after he had greeted everyone, and looked back over his shoulder to make sure no one else was coming, he turned back around to fully face his students, a smile on his face.
“Hello and welcome to class, I know this may seem a weird time and place to be holding class, but we will get to that in a bit of course.” He said as he moved to carefully lean on the table that he was using as a desk, while he was mostly sure it was sturdy, he really didn’t want it to collapse during class, so he wasn’t putting his full weight on it.
“Now to ease us into the lesson, I have a pretty simple question, Tell me what you know about Stars, anything and everything?” He said with a grin as he looked at them.
OOC: The question is simple, “What do you know about Stars.” You all have about 36 hours ish or so to answer this before we move on! Thanks everyone so much for coming! I really appreciate it!

It would take a long time for Caolan to get used to the schedules for lessons at this school. He had been here a few weeks already and he still wasn’t used to the early mornings and late evenings and all the in-betweens. It wasn’t like a muggle school at all and as he stood at the Astronomy lesson waiting for the class to start he had to resist the urge to yawn. What? He was a teenage boy and quite frankly he needed a nap.
Astronomy was a lesson that despite his Da’s distaste for the subject (mostly because he was terrible at it) Caolan had a weird interest in the stars and planets and.. well it was kinda muggle wasn’t it? There was no need for wands or charms in this lesson, it was just them and the night sky. Or not in this case. There weren’t many people that he recognised and so he was alone for today. He didn’t mind too much, he didn’t really know anyone enough to consider them true friends. Time would hopefully change that.
The first question was pretty simple and very open. It left a lot to interpret and he really didn’t have to think too hard about what would be considered the right answer because there was so much he could say. He raised his hand. “Stars are basically big balls of burning gasses like Hydrogen in the solar system. There’s so much gas in a star that it is able to hold itself together by gravity.” There was more, like the sun was a big star, but Caolan couldn’t really be bothered to reel off a load more and he didn’t want to get overly complicated (if he could).

He'd only just gone and forgotten about the biggest and most obvious star in the sky right now. Max squinted in the direction of the sun for a moment before raising his hand in the air. Stars. "There's a lot of them." Okay, perhaps he should elaborate. "Like.... a lot of them. Millions. Actually, billions."
A lot.
Which was all very cool and all but honestly, were they ever going to have a lesson about martians?

Natalie had been watching students file in and was mentally eyeing Maxton and Vita for not sitting by HER, but she also knew she was selfish and they... obviously had other friends, so she just sat there and toyed with her scarf instead.
Then class started and Natalie perked. Oh, an easy question! Natalie liked those! She was very good at those. So she rose her hand.
"The stars are so far away that any one of the stars we see at night could actually be dead and we just won't know for like, a hundred years because the light takes so long to get to us." Did that make sense? Even if it didn't really, Natalie was pretty sure EVERYONE knew that about stars, so it wasn't really... groundbreaking.
Going to try something I'm gonna stick with this and see what happens

"Skyler" blinked and opened her eyes. She looked around and wondered where they were. Someone that looked like a professor was asking a question. What did she know about stars? Well, a lot actually. What did you want to know first?
"Well professor," "Skyler's" voice came out as an American teenage male's voice.

Torii smiled at her Head of House, and then with a nod, she took a seat. She hadn't really gotten to know Kennedy on a personal level, but from what she could tell, he was going to be an awesome professor and Head of House. She settled into her seat just as the last few people were arriving and the lesson was starting.
So...stars. Simple enough. The first thought that came to Torii's mind had to do with the Sun being a star. Somebody beat her to that one, though. Another thought came to mind, and she raised her hand. "Stars might look just one color, but they can be classified red, blue, and yellow," she said, raising her hand. She didn't know much about that, though, because all stars looked the same color to her. Still, she'd heard there were other colors.

The thing about Astronomy...was that Aaron wasn't the best at it. It was one of those subjects that required a focus he rarely used for anything other than quidditch and music. And bees.
Definitely bees.
...but stars were beautiful, and he wanted to learn. So, it was try, and then try some more! A small mantra he held onto as he neared the lake. A breeze danced around him, fluffing up his hair in silly tufts. October in Scotland...It could be worse. So, he tugged his school robe tighter around his body, not really blocking out the weather, but vowing not to complain too much about it. There were charms in place, after all. That was nice of the man.
"Hi, Professor Kennedy!" He moved to take a seat in the semi-circle, next to Chloe.
...And just in time!
"Stars make up constellations... and those are important to agriculture." Like bees! Yep, that's all he had.

Mary felt very confident in this class. This was, in fact, the only class yet that she greets the professor in. Settling into her seat and looking back towards the professor, Mary wondered how to answer the question. The already knew a lot.
"I know that the stars are large, hot balls of gas in the universe. They are impossible to count because the universe is infinitely expanding. They are constantly being born and dying. The death of a star is often a violent event, while the birth generally happens in groups with other stars. The closest star to us is the sun, and everything in the solar system orbits around it, though we aren't the only star with a system of planets."
Kennedy got it. He understood. Afternoon, it was definitely still afternoon. Abra smiled, and nodded his head.
Hearing his name, he turned to find the speaker and saw a first year from his house. Smiling, he greeted the boy. "Hi, uh..." He'd just said his name, but Abra hadn't been tuned in at that exact moment. Still, he didn't let that stop him from being polite. "Nice to meet you!" Again. Because they'd no doubt met briefly at least on the night of the opening feast, when he and Stasya had escorted the first years to Gryffindor Tower, but that would have been very brief.
But then the lesson was starting, so Abra turned his attention to Professor Kennedy again. The question was, thankfully, a simple one, and with six years of Astronomy lessons under his belt, Abra felt more or less prepared for it. He raised his hand and spoke. "Every element comes from stars. I think... that's what nuclear fusion does. Or is." ... "Or... does." Did the specifics matter? Probably.

Camilus started getting nervous, a feeling that he was not used to. He didn't know anything about stars, never having actually considered studying anything that was outside of his reach.
"Okay, I'm sorry professor, but I'm just going to be honest. All I know about stars is that they are in space....," Camilus said feeling very awkward. Was everyone going to stare at him now?

Chloe gave Aaron a huge grin as he took up a spot near her. Hooray for friendly faces! And hooray for friendly professors. She appreciated that Professor Kalen wasn't weirded out by the idea of a Giant Squid popping in, so she decided to hold out hope that it would actually happen.
But time to put on a participatory face. Chloe raised her hand. "If you go out for astrology, the specific position of the stars and planets in the heavens can tell us all sorts of... things." Chloe believed in divination, had to because of her mum and stuff, but she wasn't keen on astrology.

Lucas BEAMED, silently glad that the Carden boy had mentioned it AND glad that it was happening. Maybe he didn't need to sit near the Lake, after all. Instinctively, he looked up and around the sky to see if he could spot any, maybe even squinted a little just in case, but no such luck. Were they going to see one later? Just like the eclipse?

As for the question, he eventually looked back down and raised his hand up in the air. "Well, they usually form constellations with the brightest ones being given their own names and they are beautiful!" Which was two (?) facts and not the best facts - Airey Flamsteed might not be very impressed if he knew - but he was CONFIDENT about them. Mhm.
Camilus nodded as Kaira sat down next to him, and his friend Malachi next to her. It hadn't been too many days in term yet, but Camilus was already making a good set of friends it seemed.
Malachi smiles as he sets beside Kaira and nods in greeting to Camilus. "Do either of you know any interesting facts about stars?"

Patrick was thrilled to be back in his favorite classroom. Astronomy was his favorite he was often in the reading room or out observing the stars. He wasn’t as good as Kennedy but he tried that was for sure. And it was always interesting to learn the stories involving constellations. He had slipped into his seat and began to write the first questionbof the lesson on husband paper. Always the copious note taker.
He raised his hand, “stars can help you navigate.” he had learned that both at hogwarts and with his muggle friends back in the states when he went home for the summer. It was wild what transferred over.
Kalen nodded at the young Mr.Potter and he was the first one to come to the lake. “Hello Mr. Potter.” He said kindly as the boy found a seat.
Kalen had to hold back a grin as Abra couldn’t decide if it was afternoon or good evening. “Good afternoon Mr. Botros, I think it’s afternoon for a little longer. ” He said with a warm smile. Afternoon and evenings were hard, but anywhere after five was evening, to him at least.
Kalen smiled as one of his snakes showed up next and he nodded at her greeting. “Hello Miss Stark.” He said with a warm smile as he watching her look around a bit. “Please feel free to have a seat.” He said softly, so only she would hear. Being new wasn’t easy, being new and not fully knowing what to do was worse!
Kalen smiled as the next student arrived. “Hello Miss Newton, how are you today?” He asked as she took a seat.
Ahh first years, so full of energy and manners, Kalen smiled warmly at the boy, “Its nice to meet you Mr. Therblé. ” He said said as the boy was on to speaking to the next few people. Firsties.. gotta love em.
Ahh it seemed like the Head Girl was going to join them today and he nodded. “Good day to you Miss Kettleburn, and sadly not today. Perhaps next lesson, though you are right, I think he would be an excellent student.” Kalen said with a soft laugh.
“Good Afternoon Mr. Hadley-Nairne. ” Kalen greeted the fourth year back as he chose a seat.
“Good Afternoon Miss Queen. ” Kalen greeted the girl as she came and and almost instantly started to daydream, well there was a few minutes left before the start of class, so he supposed it was all right.
“Hello Miss McKinley. ” Kalen said as he smiled at one of the Slytherin prefects as she walked in. Hopefully people weren’t too cold, he made a mental note to ask when he started class if they wanted the heating charms to be turned up.
Kalen managed to hold back a smile as another first year came in and greeted him, of course this wasn’t their first lesson, but firsties! “Hello Miss Parker, good day to you as well. ” He said with a warm smile at her.
“Good Afternoon Miss Roberts. ” Kalen greeted the older Gryffindor with a smile.
Kalen nodded at the older Ravenclaw as she followed after a few students, “Hello Miss Dantes. ” He said with a warm smile as he caught sight of perhaps a ghost of a smile on the girls lips. He would take it!
Students seemed to coming one right after the other and Kalen found himself greeting one student right after the next one! “Hello, Miss Muldoon. ” He said with a smile before turning his attention to the next student.
Ahhh it was Miss Swann, “Hello Miss Swann. ” He said with a smile as he looked at her and nodded.
And Zoryn was here to grace his class, he had heard of a few of her… antics this term so far, and he only hoped that she would not disrupt his class. But one could never be to sure. He nodded back at her as he caught her nod. “Hello Miss Spinnet. ” He said as she walked past.
“Hello Miss Mallari. ” Kalen said by way of greeting. The girl looked like she had run down here and he hoped she didn’t think she was late! There was still a few moments before class began.
Kalen raised his eyebrows as yet another student just walked past him with a nod. Huh.. eh..
“Hello Mr. Mitsue. ” He said as a greeting of his own.
And yet another wordless greeting.. was saying hi really to much to ask? Kalen didn’t think so, but he just shrugged and nodded to Miss Buchanan before his attention was onto the next student.
Oh hey look! A greeting! “Good Afternoon Mr. Slinkhard. ” He said with a smile at the Ravenclaw boy.
Annddddd another wordless greeting, at least he got a smile from this one though. And not one he had to look into to see if it was actually there or not. He nodded at Mr.Kowalski, before looking to the next student.
Anddd Max. Oh Max.
“Well. The Stars are still out, we just can’t see them.” Kalen said with a bit of a grin as he looked at his prefect. “But, this lesson is a bit starless, there is one out though. ” He said with a shrug.. and a hint.
“Hello Mr.Dakest. ” Kalen said with a smile at the young Gryffindor.
Kalen was pleased with the turnout and and after he had greeted everyone, and looked back over his shoulder to make sure no one else was coming, he turned back around to fully face his students, a smile on his face.
“Hello and welcome to class, I know this may seem a weird time and place to be holding class, but we will get to that in a bit of course.” He said as he moved to carefully lean on the table that he was using as a desk, while he was mostly sure it was sturdy, he really didn’t want it to collapse during class, so he wasn’t putting his full weight on it.
“Now to ease us into the lesson, I have a pretty simple question, Tell me what you know about Stars, anything and everything?” He said with a grin as he looked at them.
OOC: The question is simple, “What do you know about Stars.” You all have about 36 hours ish or so to answer this before we move on! Thanks everyone so much for coming! I really appreciate it!
Malachi looks at the profesor and raises his hand before talking. "There are more stars in the sky then one person can count in a night, depending on where you are you can see many different constellations, like Orion’s Belt, the big and small dipper, the zodiac signs, Ursa Major and minor, Draco. Those just off the top of my head, some people even claim to be able to tell the future from looking at the stars. But most importantly they’re just beautiful, dangerous but beautiful." With that he stops talking and glances at the stars before looking at the ground.

Once upon a time, Regina would've been excited for every Astronomy lesson; it was one of her favorite subjects, and she'd loved night time because of it. The stars, the moon, everything about it was beautiful. After the past couple of years, however, night time had lost its appeal to her for certain reasons. And so her feelings toward Astronomy were a little more complicated now, as evidenced by her now usually tense posture and her shorter answers. Longer answers meant more attention on herself, and she wanted nothing of the sort.
But then, that wasn't limited to just Astronomy class. That was how she was most of the time nowadays.
Still, she would participate, if only at the bare minimum. She needed to maintain a better grade level for her NEWT year after her less-than-impressive grades from her one year at Ilvermorny last year.
So she raised her hand. "Stars have different life stages," she said. "Supernovas, red giants, stuff like that."

Gunnar would guess that they wouldn't do any star-gazing tonight since class was being held outside before dusk. But he wasn't upset about the time they'd be having class. He still got up fairly early, so early classes were easier as opposed to midnight class.
Though once class started, the fourteen year old found it rather interesting that they were going to talk about stars anyway. Or at least the first question would suggest that.
After a few of his classmates gave their answers, Gunnar raised his hand. "Unlike the moon which shines because of reflecting the sun's light, stars shine because of energy released from gravitational friction." Or that was the general gist of it, at least.

Harri had been here aaaaall along, mostly silent because she was trying to see if the sky when you were inside a magical school was any different as compared to when you were outside. Turns out, it was pretty much the same. She found it kind of lame, to be honest.
After offering the Professor a greeting, a wave and a smile, she plopped next to a vaguely familiar boy (Taddy) who she gave another smile too. He wasn't a Gryffindor but she was sure she had seen him somewhere before.
Anyway. Stars! This lesson was about stars? What did Harri know about stars? Well. "I know that stars are very old, Professor. They are also really, really far away. Oh, and the sun is a star." There. Brilliant.

Odaline really just didn't like to make conversation with people, it was nothing more than that. And she rarely smiled, so it wasn't something against the Professor when she didn't give him a big one like others had done. If adults were bothered by her lack of greeting, then they had very little going on in their lives. Clearly.
But her priority was learning and showing what she already knew. (Which, in terms of magic, wasn't a lot) So hand raised, she offered the simplest of answers. "You see them in the sky." Not too long, not too short. Couldn't say she wasn't contributing.

Having been here all along, Rylee was content for the moment in take down a few notes about 'stars'. What did she know about stars? Well not as much as her brother did but she knew a fair amount. All of which had been said already but that didn't stop her from writing everything down, when her gaze wasn't drifting towards the sky itself that is.
"If you are lost you can always use the North Star to help you find your way back," Rylee answered raising her hand into the air. Or at least those that knew how to use the stars for navigation could do that.

Ah, stars. Perhaps this lesson was a little bit too general and broad to study in one meeting, but Drewett gave his full attention to the class and to Professor Kennedy. And no, he didn't think it was a weird venue and schedule for the class. For the Ravenclaw, anyone can study astronomy in any time of the day no matter where they are.
As for the question, Drewett gave it a little bit more thought before he shared his insights. He, first, listened to what everyone had to say, writing small notes on his parchment as he did. Except for the obvious ones, because he knew there were a lot of stars. Once he was able to catch up, the Ravenclaw raised his hand. "Stars d-don't actually 'twinkle'..." Drewett shared. And he knew why they didn't twinkle, but he left that one wide open for anyone else who wanted to add more.

What did Vita know about the stars? Well, she liked to look at them. She knew they could set a romantic scene. She knew people liked to wish on them. All of these things came to her mind, but none seemed appropriate to share, so she listened instead, hoping something more intelligent would come to mind.

It was so refreshing seeing Professor Kennedy back in class. She had been so used to those awful imposter professors, that even a month in to the school year, she was still beaming ear to ear whenever she saw him - and the other professors who'd returned to their positions - because it meant that nightmare was finally OVER.
She raised her hand in regards to his question. "Well, you might think that red giants are hotter, and the smaller, blue ones are cold - but it's actually the opposite. The blue stars are hotter," she answered.
ANNND that was pretty much all she knew about stars.
