Default Detention - Jessa Cambridge

Alice's office looked mostly normal, or at least it would - if not for the two giant bowl's of food on top her desk. One bowl was filled with fresh pairs and apples, while the other was filled with chocolate pudding. The door was open and the professor was standing by it, wearing long white Karate robes and occasionally glancing down at her watch to see if the person she was waiting for would be late. Come right in for your detention.

The visit with the Headmaster had left her perfectly subdued. Any protest she may have had died the the moment she left the man’s office and headed over to O’Hara’s to get the detention out of the way. It was a strange sort of feeling, the resignation...and yet, it was a familiar one. She’d already reaped the fruits of going against her passive nature and was ready to fall right back into it. With only a few months left, she would not allow herself to be bothered.

Jessa gave a polite knock at the door before entering. “Good evening, Professor.” She greeted simply. Blue eyes spared only the smallest glance at the bowl of apples and the other filled with chocolate pudding. The reaction in her mind was instant: it was not her problem. The woman could do whatever she wanted, wherever she wanted. Nothing was worth offering protest and the rules were a joke.

The Head Girl remained by the door, having only taken two steps in and leaving it open behind her. There her hands fell to her side, posture straight and eyes indifferent to everything they took in.

She was here for her detention and while she wasn’t looking forward to whatever “discussion” the woman had in mind, she supposed there was nothing she could do about it. There were a lot of things in life she could do nothing about, a fact she’d learned ages ago.

"Good evening, Ms. Cambridge," said Alice with a small tip of her head to the head girl before closing the door behind her. The door automatically locked, giving a tiny (yet audible) click! as it did so. Over two inches thick and made of metal, this door was the best non-magical shield the history of magic had to be sure no colleague who decided to visit at this late hour would eavesdrop on their conversation.

She gestured to the chairs facing her desk. "Please sit. No slouching." Yeah, that rule applied in her office as well as in her classes. The professor moved to sit in her own chair at the same time, straight as a Gothic statue the entire time. It was a fitting that she was wearing white karate robes. "Now, Ms. Cambridge, you will do exactly as I tell you during this detention. Is that understood?" She narrowed her eyes at the Ravenclaw girl (making eye contact) and leaned as much towards her as she could without bending her back. As it was, she was slightly shorter than Jessa. No surprise, as she was shorter than most witches and wizards - being one fourth goblin and all. "I want you to tell me how your conversation with the headmaster went," she said, still making eye contact. "You know, Jessa, I was the one who asked Professor Ainsworth to hold the lesson at nine AM instead of eight AM. I meant to show consideration for you. It was hard to convince him that you would be on your best behavior if we didn't schedule things so early and so shortly after morning laps. And you repaid me by trying to have both me and Professor Ainsworth fired. Now.....you can imagine I'm disappointed. But I'm not asking for your apology. I just want to know...was it worth it?"

She slowly leaned back in her chair and rested her chin on her hands, though her gaze remained foxed on Jessa. "You also tried to convince me that chocolate was just as healthy as fruit. But you're a Ravenclaw, so I know you don't really believe this. Ravenclaws are smart and I know you are very, very smart - even though you try to hide it. I know your interests are of a darker nature than History of Magic, darker even than anything any of us teachers are allowed to teach. Now, I'm going to give you a chance to pick one of these two snacks to eat. You will eat five of these ripe, freshly grown pears and apples." She waved her left hand over the fruit bowl. "Or you will eat this entire bowl of this disgusting chocolate pudding." She wrinkled her nose in disgust at the pudding. "I promise you will not get in trouble with me for whichever one you pick. Eat slowly so we can discuss things."

Nope.

Nope nope nope nope nope nope nope.

Jessa's eyes widened considerably as she turned to face the door she'd been standing by. Shut. By the way it sounded when it shut, a thick wall of wood...no...steel. NOPE. The Head Girl disregarded everything the woman said....more accurately...she didn't hear any of it. Closed spaces never sat well with the Ravenclaw. There was a reason she didn't visit Professors in their offices, why Hirsch's office was the only one she'd ever sat in with the door closed and even that had taken years to get accustomed to.

This....nope. Nope noooooope.

Her stomach twisted into tight, uncomfortable knots and she could feel the blood drain from her face. In truth, the young girl was terrified of closed spaces. It could've been considered a phobia were it not for extenuating circumstances. Maybe it still was.

The Professor's words were dulled by the sound of her own heart now beating furiously in her chest. A shaky hand reached out to tug at the door, a weak tug at first but it quickly grew into frantic yanking. All around her the walls seemed to be coming closer and the quick search earlier had revealed no second door for her consideration.

"Open the door, please." Her voice was strained and barely a whisper. Not a single thing the woman said got through to her. Breathing was hard enough. Listening was near impossible.

UM...what???

Seriously, what was going on with this girl?

"Jessa, get your hand off that doorknob!" the professor ordered sternly, rising briskly from her chair to go stand next to the Ravenclaw, who was tugging at the knob as if her life depended on it. Alice considered grabbing her hands and pulling her away from the door, but that thought went away when she saw the expression in the girl's eyes. Fear. Pure fear. She wasn't being defiant, no, she was genuinely scared. The realization shocked the professor enough to make her hesitate for three whole seconds, during which time she did nothing but blink and look alarmed at the scene unfolding in her office. Jessa's strained (barely a whisper) plea to open the door came next.

"Excuse me," Alice responded, and she took a small silver key out of her Karate robe belt and placed the key in the doorknob. Click! It unlocked and the door gently swung open. Just a foot. That was how far it swung open on its own accord. Alice tugged it further until it was completely open.

"Are...are you alright, Jessa?" The initial sternness in her voice was replaced with concern. Honestly, she hadn't been trying to TRAUMATIZE her by closing the door. The door was for Alice's own benefit, so she wasn't eavesdropped on. She regarded Jessa with a look of worry. "I thought it would be better if we weren't eavesdropped on. I...I didn't mean to frighten you. It's going to be alright. We're only going to discuss some things in these chairs. Nothing else was going to happen. This is just detention."

This was a baffling turn of events.

She would NOT get her hands off the door. In fact, the woman's words only caused her to tug harder. Her rational mind took a back seat to the fear that skyrocketed in the seconds it'd taken to get the door closed. Jessa's entire focus was on trying to pry this thing open.

The young girl jumped when O'Hara appeared her side, her knuckles white because of her tight grip on the door's knob. It was the sight of the key that gave her any indication of what was happening, as her brain was still too frazzled to really make sense of it. Breathe, Jessa, breathe.

If only it was that easy.

The moment the door opened, Jessa bolted out but she wasn't gone. No. Somewhere in the back of her mind she was aware this was still detention and she was meant to stay....just......she was now standing on the other side of the door looking down at her feet while she tried to compose herself. "I'm..I'm fine..." The Head Girl's cheeks flushed red at her recent display, her gaze still fixed on her feet. "I just don't like..." She shook her head, seeing no point in explaining. "I'm fine." And she would keep telling herself this until it became true. She needed to regain control of herself.

The Head Girl straightened where she stood, her fingers fidgeting restlessly at the hem of her skirt. She cleared her throat, trying to steady it once more. "There's spells--to prevent eavesdropping. I can put one up...and then...could we...maybe keep the door open...?" She didn't MIND doing detention, just....yeah. Were the windows open? Could they open them too if they weren't?

She stared at the head girl for a few seconds before nodding slowly. "We don't have to talk about it if you don't want. Just so long as you're sure you're okay." Should she have pressed the matter to find out what had made the head girl so scared? Perhaps. But she didn't think right then was the right moment. Perhaps they could talk about it after the detention had been going for awhile, and hopefully by then things would be calm.

The offer of placing an eavesdropping was unexpected, but unfortunately she couldn't accept. "That's okay, Jessa, I don't think anyone will eavesdrop on us at this late hour. It was just a precaution. But it is kind of you to offer." It somehow seemed improper for a student who was supposed to be receiving detention to perform magic for the teacher simply because the teacher wasn't able to. She gave her a pointed look. "If anyone comes, we'll just stop talking. Alright?" Just to make absolutely sure they were on the same page. "Let's go inside...shall we?" And she gestured tentatively inside the office. Privately she wondered if Jessa would even go inside. If she wanted to have detention in the classroom since it was more open....well, Alice would be fine with that. But she wasn't going to offer it, as really she would rather have it done in her office.

"I'm curious, Jessa, what did the headmaster say when you talked to him earlier today?" This was the second time in the past ten minutes that she'd asked her that question, though this time it was asked in a less confrontational tone.

The pudding and the fruit would be saved for her next question. Best not rush everything at once, thought Alice with a small grimace.

Jessa nodded once more, this time with a little more conviction behind it. "I'm fine." She repeated as she took a cautious step back into the office. Beyond the door, but no further. The Head girl took the spot she'd been standing in before the door had slammed shut, turning her gaze to it, ready at the first sign it may close again.

Jessa nodded absently at the suggestion they simply stop talking should anyone wander by.

Blue eyes trailed over to the woman at her question, but even then they occasionally darted back at the door--just in case. "I don't suppose anything he said was of any consequence, Professor. Not to you anyway." She relayed, her voice neither rising nor falling. "Professors are right, even when they're wrong. You're all-powerful and above the law. It's not my place to enforce rules. I should learn to keep my mouth shut. We'll all have peace then."

Those weren't the words spoken by the man, but it was the message Jessa had received from everything he'd said and the subsequent lecture she'd received.

"It won't happen again." She was done giving a thought to the rules. With so few months left, the Ravenclaw was prepared to simply exist on the sidelines, blend into the background, not rock any boats. She would return to the passive nature she'd grown so accustomed to and treat everything as if it wasn't her business. Her anxiety be damned. At this rate she'd be anxious either way. Better anxious and out of trouble if that was the case.

Was that spot just barely in her office as far Jessa was willing to enter? It looked like it. Alice could have insisted she come in further, but she decided against it in the end. Though now it would be harder to do the food part of the detention. She'd find a way.

Alice listened (while continuing to stand some feet farther into the office) with a neutral expression as her first question was answered. They were getting somewhere, good. When she was done speaking, the professor walked on over to her desk and then walked back to her original spot, pondering her next words. She turned back to face Jessa before addressing her. "I am pleased to hear that it won't be happening again. Unlike some of my colleagues, I do not wish drama in my classroom. In here though, you may express yourself how you wish. My answers to your questions in class would have been different if you had come to me in my office instead of asking me them when you were supposed to be paying attention to the lesson. Having said that, I am now giving you permission to ask in this detention any question you want or express any criticism of me you have. I promise you will not get in trouble for it provided you remain civil and respectful. So...do you have anything you wish to say?"

Oh, and one other thing. "Hang on, before you answer..." She walked back over to her desk and with a grunt of effort picked up the large pudding bowl and brought it over to where Jessa was standing. She placed it on the floor in front of her and then went back and did the same thing with the fruit bowl. "You can sit on the floor for this part of the detention," she said, making it sound more like a command than an offer. "During this detention, I would like you to either five of these beautiful, fresh, healthy pears and apples, or to eat the entire bowl of this disgusting chocolate."

It was very telling, the woman’s choice of words. They said a lot more than she actually did and provided the non-verbal cues the Ravenclaw tended to look out for when interacting with others. In this case, the woman had conveyed a lot more with her choice of words and even things left unsaid than the things she’d taken the time to present.

Even the way the option of fruits or chocolate spoke volumes.

Jessa sank to the floor with her back against the wall by the doorframe. It was the perfect position to take action as needed. Quite deliberately, she reached for the bowl of chocolate. She conjured a spoon, no protest to being asked to have food outside of designated places. No. The lecture had been well received. Any protest to anything asked of her by professors—against the rules or otherwise—has been crushed. Her spirit had taken another of several blows and she was honestly just very tired. Professors were not bound to the same rules. These rules were circumstantial and changed based on who was handing them out. In the moment, the command to eat either was the only one she entertained. No other rule stood in place. That was the only way to prevent herself from having a full blown anxiety attack. Should Scrimgeour show up, she would simply go with whatever happened then too.

“I don’t have any questions and I don’t have any comments. I don’t have opinions, I don’t have beliefs. I only have whatever I’m expected to have in the moment.” A necessary adaptation to survive. She had a spoon of the chocolate, pausing to swallow as it was rude to speak with a full mouth. “If you’d like me to have questions or comments, tell me which and I’ll have them.” Her tone was flat, listless, disengaged. Going with the flow until graduation was the game plan. What she thought...how she felt...it didn’t make any difference. She would keep it to herself and do whatever got these days to move by even a little more smoothly.

Alice couldn't say Jessa's choice of snack surprised her. This was expected, even more so due to the adjectives Alice had used to describe both the fruit and the pudding. And yet, some emotion did flash across her features for just a moment when Jessa reached for the pudding. Annoyance? Maybe, but it was gone within a second.

Smiling thinly at the Ravenclaw, Alice bent down to sit in a cross legged position a few feet in front of her. She then reached into the opposite bowl and took out a large yellowish green pear. "So your selecting the pudding which I had just insulted instead of the fruit which I complimented was not due to any personal opinion Ms. Jessa Cambridge may hold deep down?" As she finished speaking she took a small bite out of the pear and chewed thoroughly before swallowing. She took note of how Jessa swallowed before speaking. "Good girl for not talking with food in your mouth. I forgot to mention that was another rule for our detention."

She was about to speak again (after having swallowed another piece of pear), but stopped upon seeing one of the school ghosts float through her classroom connected to the office. It was one of the knights. She watched to make sure he was gone before continuing. "Now Jessa, I am curious about this change in attitude I'm seeing come over you. 'I only have what is expected of me at the moment,'' she said, quoting the head girl directly. "Does 'at the moment' refer just to our detention, or does it refer to the rest of your final year here at Hogwarts? Would you listen to me if I requested that you put more interest in History of Magic, so you can give better answers when I call upon you in class?"

Here she allowed a long pause after the Ravenclaw's answer, during which time she finished her first pear. "Did you know, Jessa," she began after the silence had stretched on for awhile. "That I was a Ravenclaw too? Would you like to hear my story?"

Instinctively, Jessa scooted when the woman sat before her. An action not meant to be an affront but...just instinct.

"I don't hold anything deep down, Ma'am." She offered flatly. "Your instructions were to choose. I wasn't aware there was a right or wrong answer. I apologize." Not...entirely the truth, but it served her better. "If you'd like, I can choose the apples and pears if that better serves your needs for detention."

She too silently watched the ghost float by, remembering the agreement to cease conversation. Honestly, it hadn't occurred to her that this meant ghosts too but she would follow the cues given. In the silence, she had a bit more of the chocolate. At the next question, the Head Girl didn't so much as pause before offering up a response. "It means whatever you'd like it to mean. Whichever answer suits you best, whatever outcome speaks to you more. As I've said, I have no personal beliefs or convictions left. They're whatever they're meant to be." A very literal statement.

On that note, she fixed the woman with a perfectly neutral expression. If she had any thoughts on the matter of O'Hara's house, they didn't come through in even the smallest facial twitch. "If you'd like to tell your story, there's nothing I can do about it. Professors may do as they please."

So she was sticking to the robot routine and pretending not to have opinions on anything. This was a curious defense mechanism. Was it dishonest? Certainly, but Alice understood it for what it was: a defense mechanism by someone who didn't want to get in more trouble. Whether or not she would be able to keep it up throughout the rest of the conversation was a different matter entirely.

As if to prove it, the Ravenclaw then offered to choose the fruit instead of the pudding. "Don't worry, I don't expect you to change snacks halfway through," she said, shaking her head emphatically as she placed the pear seed gently inside the bowl. That was all she was going to eat for now. "There is no right or wrong answer, at least not wrong in the sense that I would be angry with you for choosing wrongly. I was just curious to see if you really believed - never mind," she said, knowing what the answer would have been to that statement. "I was just curious. Please keep eating your preferred snack." And Alice would watch her eat it while sitting in this awkward Yoga pose.

She nodded slowly at the head girl's suggestion that this new attitude could last for the rest of the year if Alice wanted it to. "I see. That's very generous of you, Jessa, but I don't have anything against you holding private opinions. Just so long as they don't disrupt my class, mkay? Although...I think I will order you to educate yourself better on History of Magic. That way when I call your name, you can have good answers for me. I really do like it when my students are knowledgeable." Whether or not Jessa would actually listen to this "order" was not something Alice would know the truth of until next lesson.

"You are right, of course. There is nothing you can do to stop me from telling you my story." For some reason, that made her smile. "This year I've only told one other person my story. She was a student serving detention too. It's deeply personal. But before I tell it, I'm curious to hear if you know that I'm part goblin." She allowed a small pause, perhaps to allow the Ravenclaw to take this information in in case she hadn't known. "I am one fourth goblin, to be precise. Do you know any goblins, Ms. Cambridge? I mean, do you have any you are close to in your life?"

At the woman's request, Jessa had another spoon of the chocolate fudge. She didn't, for a second, believe that there wasn't a wrong answer. There was always a wrong answer, people already knew what they wanted to hear. While she wasn't sure what eating chocolate had to do with detention, she also still wasn't sure what the detention was for and the woman didn't seem keen on explaining.

Perhaps the chocolate was tainted. Her not having to run laps right now for punishment was likely because the woman preferred poison.

"With respect, Professor." Because O'Hara seemed intent on believing she was simply out to disrupt her lesson. "It wasn't my private views that disrupted the class. It was Headmaster Scrimgeour's. I don't care where people want to eat what. He does." She'd been punished, then punished again for doing what she'd been told and needed to make this clear. She would make no comment on being knowledgeable though. Jessa had already finished the syllabus and sat the NEWTs privately. She knew the content. The Head Girl simply didn't feel like answering but if the woman would prefer she did then for the sake of her own sanity, she would. It was a simple adjustment that didn't require further comment.

Jessa didn't so much as flinch at the confirmation she had no control of anything in the situation. It was typical. It was a reality she was more acquainted with. The revelation of her heritage didn't stir a reaction in the girl's impassive expression either. All that did come out, once she'd processed the information was, "No, I'm afraid I don't know any goblins, not personally." The ones at Gringotts had always spooked her and outside of that, she'd never ran into any.

The more they talked, the more Alice got the impression that Jessa really did not know why she was offered the choice between chocolate pudding and fruit. That was odd. Alice was sure that she would have realized right away what was up. Then again, perhaps she did know. Her ignorance could easily simply be part of her obedient robot routine.

Alice regarded the girl with a curious expression when she pushed back on her earlier claim that her private opinions were disrupting class. The robot routine that seemed to be running thin. "That is not true, Jessa," she said softly, a slight edge to her tone. "You told me I was wrong about chocolate being poison, while at the same time pretending its health benefits were of equal value to fruit. I know Julian does not share that opinion." She reached forward slowly to touch the bowl with the chocolate pudding. It was slightly cool to the touch. She withdrew her hand. "But yes, I do understand that you were trying to enforce our headmaster's new rules. But you're a smart girl. I'm sure that deep down you know why the rules applied to Mr. Kennedy and did not apply to us. So Jessa...I'm asking you. Why did Mr. Kennedy lose his job while Mr. Ainsworth still has his?" Surely the head girl knew the answer to this question.

"Well now you do," she said in response to the statement of not knowing any goblins. "No, that's inaccurate. I'm not just a goblin or just a human. I'm both. More human than goblin. My father was a half-goblin." This part of the conversation was not something she cared if others had. Her voice raised ever so slightly as she began to tell her school story. "My parents told me old goblin stories as a child, and through those stories I learned of Godric Gryffindor and his Sword made by our kind. I learned how our kind had attempted to take back the Sword several times throughout history, but it slipped out of our fingers every time we seemed to succeed - even when we had earned it fair and square. Being one fourth goblin, I set myself a mission at the age of 11, the very first serious mission I ever had. I would be put in Gryffindor and become so brave that the stubborn Sword would be forced to come into the hands of a part goblin. Sadly, I was never very brave. When the time came to be sorted, I whimpered and didn't express any opinion. He put in Ravenclaw, though he considered putting me in Slytherin instead. So I had failed. The Hat had conspired against me, or so I believed at the time." Was she bitter, after all these years? Yes, a little, and it showed in her voice and in her face. "To make matters worse, I was a terrible witch. My magic came and went. Sometimes it would work and sometimes it didn't. I had trouble producing even simple charms. The only thing I was good at was memorizing things, and that is how History of Magic became my favorite subject. I always liked history, anyway, having been a student of goblin history. But I never stopped wanting the Sword. Once I tried to prove my bravery by sneaking into the Forbidden Forest. I never made it past the tree line. The caretaker caught me and I got detention for two weeks. I never tried again." Her expression lost focus as she remembered those days of drama. "I grew to hate all Gryffindor students, resenting them for having what I never could. Sometimes I lashed out at them. Eventually I learned to control my temper and keep my darkest feelings buried deep inside where only I could feel them. My little fantasy. Eventually, some years after graduating, I dropped my resentment of Gryffindors. Despite everything, I managed to become a teacher in Romania, and now I am a teacher at Hogwarts. That is my story."

Her gaze snapped back into focus. She regarded Jessa. "Thank you for listening."

"With equal respect, Professor." A respect that sank further and further away each time the woman spoke. "It's not accurate to say chocolate is poison." She'd never said they were equal. She'd said in moderation chocolate could be as good for someone's health. On that note, too much fruit was equally bad for health, so they were more alike than the woman was willing to bet. "That's a fact, not my personal opinion. Studies have been done. Reports have been published." To keep denying it was ignorant.

O'Hara was right though, she did understand the difference between Kennedy and Ainsworth. It was fundamental. Scrimgeour needed his own men on the inside, ones that would do as he said, not ones hired by someone else. But as she didn't want to get into it..."No, I don't know the difference." Though Scrimgeour HAD spelled it out quite clearly for her. It just wasn't worth the explanation when feigned ignorance was so much easier.

Throughout the woman's tale, Jessa busied herself eating the chocolate. She was cautious with each swallow, expecting her throat to close up at any second or her stomach to begin doing painful flips. Of course she understood the symbolism behind the choices offered to her but if her choice was inconsequential then there was no point.

By the time the woman was done, the Ravenclaw could see the bottom of the bowl. She lowered the spoon at the woman's thanks. "You're welcome." Her only comment. The only thing she had to say to the entire story. In truth, she didn't see the point in thanking her. She hadn't done it because she wanted to, she did it because there was no choice. It struck the Ravenclaw as odd, then, that the woman would bother to thank her at all. It wasn't as if she would get up half way through and leave, or cover her ears. She did as was expected. The young girl fell silent then. Waiting for her next set of directions. This was detention and if the chocolate wouldn't kill her then she supposed there would be more to come.

Alice brushed aside Jessa's continued continued criticism of her anti-Chocolate statements with a wave of her hand. "Now Jessa, I think I've shown a lot of kindness to you this evening. I consented to opening my door and having this detention on the floor and I respected your privacy enough to not question it. I let you choose the snack you preferred and I didn't even make you run laps. Let's drop it with the chocolate, mkay? If it's consolation, I view coffee as much worse than chocolate."

Of course, she did not believe that Jessa did not know the difference between Ainsworth and Kennedy. But she wanted very much to get into it. "There is a hierarchy at work, which I thought any true Ravenclaw your age would have figured out by now You probably have figured it out, so I guess maybe you love hearing the sound of my voice as I explain things. The difference is that Kennedy was not hired by our headmaster. The Headmaster's special hires are above the rules. The rest have to follow them. Our dear potions professor and myself are exceptions only because we demonstrate loyalty to the new order. I personally believe that I rank a little higher than Professor Noble." Or maybe she was just flattering herself. Was Jessa about to contradict her? Of course not. Just look at the poor girl. "Unfortunately, both of us still rank lower than the new hires. But that is how things are. I'm explaining all this to you so you know who the rules are meant to punish and who can be excused from following them."

Jessa's lack of a reaction to her personal story was expected. Annoying, but expected. She wasn't going to comment any further. Alice nodded slowly and regarded the Ravenclaw curiously. "Your detention is almost over. For the final part, I want you to close your eyes and focus on breathing slowly. Untense every muscle in your body and relax. You may leave when you open your eyes."

Jessa couldn't understand what the woman being "nice" had to do with her stating a well known fact. The Ravenclaw couldn't understand why the truth....why knowledge was somehow offensive to a woman who the hat had seen as a Ravenclaw herself. It wasn't adding up but if O'Hara wanted to drop it, she obviously had no protest. Not even the mention of coffee could stir protest in her.

Patiently, her expression as impassive as it'd been through the goblin story, Jessa waited for the History of Magic Professor to get through explaining what she already knew. It was obvious, y'know? But not something she wanted to get in with. It did strike her as a little odd Noble would be tangled in all this but then again.....he'd always been a little off so it didn't surprise her. Again, she had nothing to say.

The kid could've made it to the end without another word--surprised as she was that detention was apparently over--until the woman said that.

Instinctively, her eyes went back to the door, the one that could slam shut the moment her eyes closed. Just the thought was enough to make her stomach twist. "I'd rather keep my eyes open." She said quietly.

"Meditation works much better with your eyes closed," Alice retorted in an annoyed tone. Why did everything have to be difficult with this one? Relaxing at the end was supposed to be the nice part of the detention, a reward for cooperating- if you will. Now she wanted to change the rules of meditating!

Alice quickly got her temper under control. "I suppose you can do it with eyes open, if you really want to. But I would rather you did with your eyes closed." And she closed her own eyes and followed her own instructions. Vaguely she wondered if Jessa would close her eyes since Alice had closed hers. Hopefully she would, but now there was no way to know unless she told her.

"Our detention is over," Alice said, her eyes still closed. Slowly, she opened them and looked at the Ravenclaw. "You are dismissed unless you have further questions. Have a nice night, Jessa."

Meditation? No thanks. It wouldn’t calm her nerves, it wouldn’t make her feel better. In the silence that followed, Jessa simply watched the Professor close her own eyes and waited patiently for them to reopen. When they did, it came with the words she wanted to hear.

All in all, nothing compared to something Scrimgeour could’ve cooked up but she supposed that was for the best since even now she hadn’t been told what she was being punished for. It was hard to draw parallels and make corrections without something like that.

Not wanting to get into it, Jessa merely rose at the invitation to leave.

“Enjoy your evening, Professor.” She said with an air of polite detachment before turning and leaving. Back to drowning in her thoughts unless a potion or two proved effective.
