Default Spare Office

If you happen to try one of the doors near the end of the sixth-floor corridor, you might just find yourself in a handsome (if not dusty and aged) office of a surprisingly large size. The faint smell of crystallized pineapple seems to linger in the air of the room, which contains numerous side doors and nooks and crannies. Unfortunately for you, all of them remain firmly locked so there is no telling what lies behind them.

Although the room is devoid of any office-like furniture, or any furniture at all, there is still an impressive, but faded, rug before the large fireplace and long mirror hanging over that to boot. The spare office is still a cool place to hang out, practice some wandwork, or do some light reading. Just don't linger here too long because the allegedly esteemed former person that resided here was only fond of certain guests, of whom were one of his favourites and were only welcome to visit him in this office only as long as they didn't ask prying questions about specific moments in his past.

Quinn had yet to stumble upon the Room of Requirement, and honestly, would have assumed she was being tricked if she hadn't confirmed it did in fact exist with several books in the library. But during her search, she had stumbled upon another room that was perfectly suitable until she did find the Room of Requirement.

It was a spare office that was nearly perfectly empty, thus letting her enjoy the true acoustic potential of the castle without much impediment.

She made her way first to the corner, depositing her bag and removing a violin case from it. With loving care she removed the violin and made her way to the center of the room, and started to play. It was a magical instrument, of course, and let her layer sounds and notes so the effect was similar to several violins, and sometimes even another string instrument or two, in there, playing at once.

Reese too was in search of the room of requirement, but his exploration was cut short by the sounds of a violin singing.. He followed the sounds of lamentation.. They felt familiar, as if he might know their owner.. So much feeling and emotion was the player putting into this piece.. And he sat close to the open office door and closed his eyes... All he could picture was his new best friend Quinnie swaying into the bows motion and ride the wave back the other way only to have the emotion drive on the cycle of sway and the ride back.. He could her ferocity as it built and the coming to a victorious Peak... She had won and overcame the oppression that had held her down.. Quinnie was a phoenix and he knew she rise to meteoric heights..

Derf was multitasking a bit, as he tended to do just so he could get through his days. And right now he was finishing up his patrols with his guitar strapped to his back. Having mapped out his route so that it would eventually end near the music room, the fifth year was trying to recall just when the last time was he had been in the music room outside of orchestra or other school related activities specifically.

And he could recall quite vividly, actually. His ears reddening a bit as he leisurely strolled ... and then his ears picked up the tune of ".......a violin?"

And clearly he wasn't the only person to have been lured over this direction by the sound. He, of course, recognized the first year Hufflepuff and even recalled him by name. It was his business to remember these details with each Sorting, not to mention he was friends with the younger boy's sister. "Hiya Reese," he greeted, not thinking too much about it as he put his hand on the handle and pushed the door open.

Reese nearly jumped out of his skin when he heard his house prefect greet him.. He had been paying such close attention to the piece being played and discerning who the player was that he hadn't heard his footsteps approaching.. " Oh!.. Hiya, Derf.. ", is all the first year got out before the older boy walked right on into the room..

He leaned back against the cold stoned and decided to take out the book Schmebby had given him and tapped it and said the password and the name of the creature book he had copied earlier in the library was there before his eyes.. He'd just relax and read out here..

With the last few notes, Quinn brought the piece to a close and removed the bow from the strings, relaxing as she did so. Oh, yes. Quinn glanced up at the walls, pleased and satisfied. The acoustics in here worked well. It might not be the Room of Requirement, but this will do wonderfully until she actually found it.

Now she had a practice spot all to herself, and she planned on practicing another piece. But first a short break. Quinn lowered her violin and turned around to where she had left the case beside her bag, and jumped halfway to the ceiling. "Merlin!"

Apparently, Quinn didn't have this spot all to herself, or rather more likely had attracted attention like she had in the trophy room. The older boy standing in the doorway even had a prefect badge. What was it with her playing always seemingly luring prefects?

Once her heart had returned to its normal, resting rate, Quinn arched an eyebrow at the Prefect. "Well? It's customary for an audience to give some reaction, isn't it? Applause, or booing or something?"

She did not yet realize one of her best friends was sitting and reading just outside the door.

He was well engrossed in what he was reading.. Hippogriffs.. An in Depth Look at the Proudest of the Beaked Hybrids.. The music a bated... And YUP!! That was his Quinnie that had been playing.. He grabbed his schoolbag and snapped shut the book and cleared it's pages before shoving it inside as he got to his feet.

He pushed the door open and went inside. He couldn't help the smile he had on his face when he entered clapping and whooping.. " ENCORE!!... Play us another one, Schmebby.."

Oops. Hadn't meant to scare the first year...which was why Derf sent him a bit of an apologetic look before stepping inside. You'd think that he was doing something WRONG sitting out side of the room listening in or something - the first year, that is. At least that was the sort of JUMP reaction Derf often had - when he was doing something he ought not to.

But aaaaaaanyway....

........what?

It took Derf an embarrassingly long couple of seconds once he was in the spare office to figure out what she meant. Mostly because he hadn't intended on being an audience member to anything and he really hadn't been standing here all THAT long to really constitute being one...had he? It was sorta more like he was rubbernecking. Just without the accident that the term was usually associated with.

"Huh? Oh!" But the Hufflepuff knew how to humor a person, so he offered a bit of a hurried applause after leaning his guitar against the door frame.

And then Reese was pushing his way by him and into the office too.

".....Schmebby? That's a unique name."

Quinn leveled an annoyed look at Reese, but as always that smile was there before she could stop it, running the otherwise perfect display of annoyance. She simply shook her head to the request for more. "The year's just started. You'll likely hear a lot more playing from me. Let's save some interest for later, shall we?" Honestly, he probably would hear more from her throughout the year. They were often hanging out and she had little qualms playing for him.

The Prefect, however. She didn't know him all that well, and was less inclined to play another for him. She watched as he set down his guitar, eyes lingering on it for a moment.

"Quinn, actually. Only he," she nodded to Reese, "gets to call me Schmebby." Beth also, of course. Beth had universal nickname privileges and Reese had Shmebulock specific nickname privileges. That was it. No one else had nickname privileges with her, prefect or not. She wasn't afraid to get detention hexing a prefect that called her by a nickname without earning the right too.

Reese knew right off that his comment gained his targeted effect.. She always tried to look annoyed by him, but he could tell she loved their nudgey back and forth.. It was amusing to them both. Might as well admit it. Her smiles always gave her amusement away too.. And did his..

" Well, if yur done in here do ya wanna go down to the barns with me?", he said when she said she wasn't all for playing another piece for them.. He didn't mind at all..

He did however look up at his house Prefect and give him a little nod. " Hiya, Derf..

Oooh!.. That wasn't smart.. Derf didn't know Quinnie enough to be using any type of nickname. he even winced when he heard Derf say it.. And as expected she gave him the rundown on nickname rights.. Which were extended to himself on a limited basis and free lance for Bethlebee.. Yup!.. This kid was special.. Neeener neener!

Reese straightened up and puffed up his chest .. All proud of himself for having Schmebulock rights..

Quinn let another light smile grace her, and nodded. "Yes. I'll introduce you to someone there. Just let me pack up." She made her way to the corner where her bag was and paused. Did Reese just call the Prefect Derf? And he commented on Schmebby being an odd name?

Right.

Quinn slipped her violin back into her bag, slipped over her shoulder and followed Reese out as they started to make their way to the barns. Office is all yours Derf. Rock out if you wish.

Well...he hadn't heard MUCH but what he had heard had sounded really lovely, so Reese's request for an encore was certainly warranted. And for a moment Derf wanted to ask her if she was interested in signing up for orchestra with the Charms professor - where he was with his guitar - but her reluctance to continue playing somewhat made him think otherwise.

And then came the haughty response to what he had THOUGHT was her actual name. "Oh, sorry," he nodded with a firm ruffle of the hair. "Quinn then. Hi." And he wasn't entirely sure what to make of the younger Hufflepuff's proud look - only he sorta could understand if he was assuming right - because Abey was the same with him. Everyone else had to conform to the more mature sounding Abra...but he, well, he got to keep his Abey. His Gryffindor.

So sure, puff that chest out. Be proud of your connections with others. They were special, you know?

"I'm Derfael, but friends call me Derf," he offered as a bit of an after thought. Though Reese had already sorta introduced him by reference. And, for the record, he had said unique and not odd. Any negative connotations from his curiosity were on the Ravenclaw.

Who...was now leaving. And taking Reese with him?

Er...he hadn't meant to kick her out of the office...especially since he hadn't been planning on using it to begin with.

Uuuuuuuuuh...

"Bye...then," he offered as an awkward wave to the departing duo.

Well...since the room was no longer going to be used....Derf shut the door and, welp, he would just continue on with his patrol and find himself in the music room eventually!

Maddie was roaming down the corridors on a mission. She only had a few weeks left to do her Divination assignment, and she still had three more readings to do. Speaking of which...only a few more weeks?!? That meant the end of the school year was approaching! Was she really almost a fourth year? MERLIN. She'd always pictured herself as one of the little bitty ones here at Hogwarts, and soon she'd be fourteen and in her fourth year. It didn't even seem real!

Those were the thoughts running through her mind as she somewhat absentmindedly entered the spare office. It was pretty quiet in here, and it seemed like a good place to get her notes together and figure out who she still needed to track down to do a reading on. Other students didn't seem like too big of a deal, but asking a professor to see their feet and study them was something else entirely.

The Hufflepuff sat cross-legged on the rug and spread out a few materials in front of her. She tried to ignore the faint smell lingering in the room. What was that anyway?

The spare office that was located on the sixth floor was a bit of a trek from her office. Nevertheless, there were random items in one of the rooms attached to it used for storage that she wanted to retrieve for lesson purposes. Manually, of course, as there were plenty of enchantments placed on all of the doors there.

Soon enough her hand turned the handle of the door and the faint scent of pineapple hit her nostrils. It wasn't exactly a pleasant smell (lavender was her preference), but her thoughts about the smell, as well as the items she was there for, were set aside. The office wasn't empty.

"Oh, hello, Miss Kemp," she greeted the Hufflepuff, taking in the sight of the girl sitting on the floor cross-legged with some materials spread out. What was she up to in here by herself?

Maddie really didn't have that much more of her assignment left to do. There was just one major contributing factor keeping her from getting things done, and she took note of that in big, bold letters at the top of her parchment.

NEED MOTIVATION

She laughed silently to herself, and she might have even done something to get started on her assignment, had it not been for the sudden, surprise entrance of the headmistress. "Hello, Headmistress," she said. Then a thought came to her. "You're super good at sudden appearances, you know." The last time Maddie had been in a random room, which was just in the beginning of the school year, the headmistress had popped into that room, too.

She saw the woman's gaze turn to the materials spread out nearby. "Divination," she simply said. "We have a year-long assignment to do some foot readings. I've done..." She flipped through her pages as she counted her foot readings. "...one out of four. I'm working really hard on it, though. I'll be a fourth year next year, so I figure I should be really good at all this." She was pleasantly surprised at how well she'd done in Hawthorne's class, too.

The girl's response brought a smile to the headmistress' face. Or maybe it was more of a grin. Either way, Regina took Maddie's words as a compliment. She was nearly forty-five and was still a pro at being stealthy. Clearly the Curse-Breaking training, as there were moments when great stealth was needed, stuck with her after all these years. Maybe a little to well.

"Perhaps," she did eventually say, more lightheartedly than anything. To the Hufflepuff, she added, "Always be vigilant." That was a little nugget of unwarranted advise she had to give.

Quickly the subject changed to what the third year was working on. The woman nodded her head at the mention of Divination, as much as she didn't personally care for the subject. It all seemed ... well, she wasn't going to get into that. "Foot readings? That sounds ... potentially pungent." Regina hoped that the person Maddie had done a foot reading for had fair-smelling feet. "Do you have any ideas on who you might ask to do the other three?" Having a plan, more of a check-list really, always seemed to help motivate her to get the work done.

Maddie watched the smile spread across the Headmistress' face. You know, if anyone ever said the Headmistress' was cold-hearted and hard to get along with, Maddie would have to call them a liar. "I will be," she said, referring to the comment about always being vigilant. Although, sitting down on the floor while not keeping watch at all probably didn't leave her very well-protected. The Headmistress could have been anybody she guessed.

"Potentially pungent! What a vocabulary!" she said with a smile. She started to say no, that she had no idea who she'd do the other foot readings on. She had an idea, though, and seeing as part of her idea was standing right before her, she smiled a sneaky kind of smile. "Well, I do have a staff member standing right before me," she pointed out. Heh. She hadn't actually come prepared to do a reading, though. She didn't even have anywhere for the Headmistress to sit. She wondered if the lady had any issues sitting cross-legged on the floor?

The headmistress nodded at the girl's response. Of course, the room they were in wasn't exactly the best spot to be vigilant in, unless one were constantly looking at all of the doors that were scattered about the room. But, in due time, she was sure the Hufflepuff would learn that.

A smile cracked on her face when Maddie made the comment about her vocabulary. The smile remained, to cover disbelief, when the girl stated that she had a staff member right in front of her to do a foot reading on. She was joking, right? ... Nope.

"Well, I ... I suppose," the woman said, going so far as to conjure a chair for herself (there was no way she was going to sit on the floor) and started taking off her heels. The things she did for purposes of academia.

Maddie laughed. "Don't worry. We're all having the same reaction about it," she assured the woman. "Studying feet isn't exactly my favorite part of Divination." Maddie didn't call any form of Divination her favorite, but she didn't say as much to the Headmistress. She couldn't believe her luck in getting Hawthorne to agree to this, and the woman must be actually following through with it seeing as she conjured a chair. She didn't suppose the headmistress also knew a spell for conjuring completed assignments, hmm?

So this put Maddie face to face with Hawthorne's foot, a position she could honestly say she never predicted she'd be in. It also looked like they'd be studying Hawthorne's right foot, too, seeing as that was the one she'd freed from her shoe. Maddie took note of that on her parchment then turned back to the foot. She took a good minute to change her gaze from the foot to her notes and back again. "You've got what's called a Square or Peasant Foot," she finally said. All of her toes were about the same length. "That's a pretty good foot to have, too. It means you never give up, and you work hard to achieve your goals." That was the good news. "It also means that you might over-analyze things, but whatever you do, you do it well."

There was a lot more to say about her feet, though. "Although, your big toe is just a little bigger than the others, which means you have a lot of joy in your life," she continued. "Hmm...your toes also have a rounded sort of look to them, which means..." The Hufflepuff turned back to her textbook. "Oh, that you can be sensitive and tactful." Was the headmistress a sensitive person? Maddie didn't know a lot about her personal life, but she didn't seem overly sensitive here at the school. "The other toes are close together, too. That means, ...well, it means you have little faith in yourself, but I don't agree with that. You seem pretty strong to me."

Foot reading number #: 4
Who are you doing the foot reading on: Headmistress Hawthorne
Chosen Foot (left/right?): Right foot
Feet characteristics (cracked, swollen, flat etc?) and meanings:
- Square or Peasant Foot. All of her toes were about the same length. This means she never gives up, and that she works hard to achieve her goals. It also means that she might over-analyze things, but that whatever she does, she does it well.
Toe characteristics (round, crooked, big, small etc?) + meanings:
- The big toe, although similar in size to the others, was still just a little longer. That means she has a lot of joy in her life.
- Toes in general have a rounded look to them. This means she can be sensitive and tactful.
- Last few toes are pretty close together. This means she has little faith in herself.

General reflections on what your foot says about your personality or your peers/staffers: I agree that the Headmistress is a hard worker and seems to be the kind of person that sets goals and does whatever it takes to achieve them. I mean, she did this foot reading with me, which means she is doing her best to lead the school and help the students. She doesn't seem to be unhappy, so I would also say she has a lot of joy in her life. The last two points I noted, though, don't seem to be true. I don't see the Headmistress as being too sensitive, and I certainly don't see her as a person with little faith in herself. All-in-all, I think about half of my reading reminded me of the Headmistress I know!
"All done," she said, as she looked up from her notes. "Thanks so much." She turned her notes to face Hawthorne. "Want to see?"

"I don't blame you," the headmistress responded, not blaming the reactions that they had to having to get up close and personal with peoples' feet and not disagreeing with the option that this wasn't exactly the most pleasant form of Divination. Never mind the fact that she wasn't a big believer in the subject, but to each their own.

Regina remained quiet while Maddie looked at her foot, took some notes, and then stated her observations. Her interest was grasped at the description of her foot being labelled a Square or Peasant Foot. That was ... different. But what the girl said as an explanation to what that meant seemed to be spot on.

The other stuff, though, seemed ... really off. But, still, the woman remained silent.

Looking over the girl's notes when she showed them, she then finally spoke. "So ... is this some sort of prediction? That I am a certain way now, but might come across something that will make be sensitive? Or is this just to give the observer insight into what a person is like through this method?" Her questions showed that she didn't understand the purpose of the method.

The headmistress had remained quiet while Maddie had done the reading. She couldn't decide if that was a good thing or a bad thing. It was sort of nerve-wracking performing a school assignment right in front of the Headmistress. Maddie bit at her bottom lip while the woman read over her work.

Uhhh...and now she was asking questions. Maddie blinked. She hadn't expected questions. Not that she minded them, but would she say the right thing? Was this some sort of test? "I...think so," she said, her statement coming out more like a question. Should she tell the Headmistress that Divination wasn't really one of her favorite subjects and that she was pretty much doing this reading because she had to? Nahhh. She did have a thought, though. "It could be. I think it's more of a thought to have to help guide you in decision making." For the record...

"I don't think you're an overly-sensitive person. Actually, I really admire the way you handle things. I think you're an awe---...an excellent Headmistress," she said. She had decided to change the word awesome to excellent at the last second. Excellent seemed more like a word she would use when talking to Hawthorne. "You know," she said---"...and I swear to you this is not me just brown-nosing. Everybody has their favorite staff member. I think this year, I figured out that you're mine. Thanks for helping me with my assignment."
