Potions Lesson #2

https://cdn.nickpic.host/images/ppiCAb.png

Although laid out in the usual format, the classroom looked unusually sparse today. The absolute minimum necessary was out on the workbenches, only a single burner and tripod per place. And that included Noble’s own demonstration area, which had none of the usual paperwork or books. A solitary piece of paper held his lesson plan, with a pencil to check things off as they did them. On the side bench, the only hint that they might be brewing today was a small black bucket, the size a child might take to the beach to build sandcastles with, and a couple of covered trays - presumably containing ingredients or equipment.

The Potions Professor is stood at the back of the classroom, undoing the cuffs of his twilight blue robes and rolling up his sleeves to nearer three-quarter length. There’s a contemplative look on Noble's face, as if he’s lost in thought.

Lesson progression:
Greetings and first question
Answers and getting ready to brew
Cleaning your cauldron and first steps
Adding the rosemary, murtlap, honeywater and tea tree oil
Adding the dittany, wiggentree bark, salamander blood, silver powder, and boom berry juice

Trinetta found herself rather enjoying potions - something she didn't think would have been possible when she first started school back in September. Especially considering the fact that the professor was just so GROUCHY. He reminded her a lot of her brother Royland, but...like REALLY old compared to him. Obviously.

"Good morning Professor!" she said with a grin, even though she knew he wouldn't be as enthusiastic in his greeting, and then turned away from him towards the front and took a seat. Her eyes drifted to the buckets and she raised a blonde brow, having NO idea what that could possibly be about.

After taking a deep breath just outside the door to the Potions classroom, Emmalyn boldly entered the room, chin up and a forced smile on her face. She had been doing somewhat better during the past few lessons and she was determined to continue her streak.

Once inside, she eyed the fairly simple setup and noticed the little bucked next to the covered trays. It appeared to be the theme of the year to have items hidden under cover when classes started. She didn't want to worry about what may or may not be under the covers, so she turned her head in search of Professor Noble.

She spotted him at the back of the room and flashed him a genuine smile. "Good day, Professor Noble. I'm looking forward to the class." With a little nod she moved to a work station and placed her things down then waited for what was to come.

More potions class with NOBLE! Chloe was ecstatic, in spite of the fact that she wasn't particularly gifted at potions. She was gifted at other things... sort of, although it mostly seemed like she wasn't really very good at anything. But she liked the subject well enough, and she really liked the Professor.

"Good day to you, Professor! We're going minimalist today, huh?"

By this time in the week, Ronan had given up on pretending to be okay. Sure, on paper it might seem like his life was going great, what with his recent acceptance to both WU's London and Paris campuses and what was sure to be an acceptance into the Auror training program. But lonely still he was, a predicament that he was still no closer to figuring out what the cause of was. So, it was a rather somber and down seeming Head Boy that walked into Potions class.

He did notice the minimalist set-up but didn't care enough to ask. He was just ready to get this class over with. "Professor Noble," was his flat-toned greeting, offered with a nod in the professor's direction before taking a seat at one of the workstations.

Daisy entered the classroom, taking a mental note of the minimalist set-up of the room. "Hello, Professor Noble," she greeted with a small grin as she made her way to a workstation and sat down.

As she entered the potions lab, Isa took a deep breath. Isa loved the smell of the potions lab. There were a lot of plant derived potions ingredients that provided comforting scents. Hmm, interesting set up today. What was the bucket for? The room seemed very clean and orderly today; perhaps the potion today would be something messy or hazardous that they would not want to spill on any books that might happen to be on the workbench. After many years, Isa still wasn’t very comfortable with the idea of personally consuming any potion that contained animal parts unless it was medically necessary, but she understood the benefits that several potions had for witches and wizards. Maybe one day she could experiment with different kinds of plants that hadn’t been used in potions before to see what affect they could have. That might be interesting, if she gained the proper potions knowledge first and used the right safety precautions. While potions itself was not Isa’s main interest, she was quite intrigued by the idea of finding new uses for certain plants. Something to think about at a later time. Caught up in her ideas, Isa nearly didn’t notice the professor at all until she heard another voice greeting the professor. Isa snapped out of her own thoughts as she remembered that she ought to greet the professor herself. ”Hello, Professor Noble.” Isa found a seat at a workbench next to Emmalyn. ”Hi Em!” Isa smiled as she took her seat by her younger friend.

Was it just her or was the school term going by ridiculously slowly? June was still ages away. A long needed, longer than a mere two weeks, break from the castle was needed and that would only come with the summer. Consider her ready for it.

Jessa walked into the potions classroom, the book she’d spent the time in History of Magic class reading still in hand. Of course, the Ravenclaw had no plans to tempt the Potion’s Master and his thin patience. Once the lesson officially began, she would put it away to avoid any issues or confiscations. The last time had been an absolute disaster. It was a wonder she wasn’t STILL stuck in detention.

“Professor.” Jessa greeted, her voice not that much higher than a mutter as she moved passed him.

For now, she didn’t notice the sparse setting. Within seconds of entering, her nose was once again in her book and it was content to stay there until the man called them all to attention.

Today’s fascination was actually routed in fiction. Opting for a break from the harder reading, she’d picked one out of the library; romance actually and though it wasn’t the sort she typically read, she didn’t hate it. There were plenty of falsehoods contained within and she quite liked pointing them out.

As soon as Anna stepped into the Potions dungeon she stopped and frowned a little at the lack of stuff around. Weird. But nothing that'd bother her too much. "Hey, professor Noble." She greeted the man as she resumed heading to her station of choice.

Placing her cauldron on the tripod in front of her, she dropped her bag on the floor next to her feet and looked at the covered trays that were on the side bench. The third year had nothing better to do, so she started to imagine which ingredients would be under the covers as she waited for the lesson to start.

Skylar only hoped that this potions class would go better than the one with joined with Herbology. But she was going to blame it on the fact that it was Herbology and nothing to do with her distractions or lack of focus over the last month. Besides, it was a new month and she was feeling much better than she had a month ago. Like, she wasn't at a hundred percent, but she was definitely getting there.

Actually the lack of stuff present in the Potions classroom that day, while unusual, felt kind of refreshing given how the last couple weeks she felt as if she was desperately trying to declutter her mind. Which was something she'd made strides with over the past couple weeks.

"Hello Professor Noble," Also. Was it just her or did it seem he had a lot on his mind too? Surely he hadn't been worried over her lack of focus, because she'd come through. She usually did.

debpetrisor 07-02-2018 11:59 AM

Daehyun was barely balancing all of his things but he was unbothered by it. One hand was occupied solely with a book, his nose buried in it that he nearly didn't see professor Noble in the back. For once, it wasn't one of his bestiaries, but instead it was a potion book, mind you. He was currently looking at the fever-reducing potion, not because he was feeling unwell, but because he was interested in magical cures.

He averted his eyes from his book only long enough to nod at professor Noble and to greet him. "Hello, professor," he said, before clumsily dropping his things on a table at the very front. As he set everything out on the workbench, he didn't fail to notice the black bucket and the covered trays, but they were soon forgotten as he buried his nose back in the book until the class started.

Junia had always enjoyed potions. There were ingredients, instructions to follow, and a connection to her chosen field post-Hogwarts, so she was in a good mood as she entered the classroom. Hair pulled back so it was out of her face, uniform neat, the seventh year approached the potions master. "Hello Professor."

Then it was off to her seat to get organized and give the man her full attention so she could find out what they'd be brewing today. Hopefully something useful.

Another day…another potions lesson. Septimus trudged down to the dungeons with his school bag slung over his shoulder with the stuff he might need for said class. Reaching the correct classroom, the second year stepped inside with just a touch of hesitance. Potions wasn’t a subject he was just bouncing to get to but a necessary within the list of required subjects. Only time would tell if he ever learned to have a propensity for the subject matter.

“Good morning, Professor,” he greeted simply, not wanting to interrupt the look on the man’s face with more chatter than was necessary to be polite. Better that he move to find a seat at a station and await the lesson, his usual curiosity at just what they would be brewing causing his gaze to flicker over the sparse clues present on the side bench. Small bucket…covered trays. Not very much to go on, he could guess practically anything.

The first voice to arrive in the classroom broke through his thoughts, and Noble looked up from his sleeve to see the first year Ravenclaw. Someone was bright and bonnie this morning…and it wasn’t him. “Morning, Trinetta,” he replied, as he finished rolling up his first sleeve.

Noble started undoing the buttons of his right cuff now, revealing scarred and dimpled flesh starting just above the wrist. He looked up to see the Emmalyn enter, the corner of his lip curling upwards into the barest hint of a smile. The young Hufflepuff had started showing signs of promise. “The same to you, Emmalyn.”

Well…talk about a contrast. With his gaze elsewhere, it took a moment for Noble to realise who had just entered, and he was somewhat surprised to see it was the Head Boy. Had NEWTs been that soul-sucking, or had some Gryffindoring significantly backfired on him? "Ronan," he greeted simply in reply.

It wasn’t the first time Jessa had walked into the classroom, nose deep in a book. Noble grumbled; he thought he’d made it clear that such reading should stop at the classroom door. “Put it away, Jessa,” he said in a warning tone. He wouldn't ask more than once.

Useful, of course, was a relative term. But Junia might find today’s topic at least of interest, if not useful for her career aspirations. Noble appreciated the precise way the Slytherin approached her work, at least, including that neat uniform and hair back. Many others has gotten sloppy at this point of the year, and it was probably time for him to start cracking back down on it. “Morning, Junia.”

Septimus had made it down from the Ravenclaw tower just in time, according to a glance at Noble’s watch. “Morning, Septimus,” he greeted in return, spying that gaze over to the covered trays. All would be revealed in due course.

He unholstered his wand now, and with a light flick the door shut with a dull thud. It was now time for class to start, and Noble’s previous thoughtfulness disappeared from his face as he strode down the side aisle of the classroom to the blackboard on the front. Picking up the chalk, he wordlessly wrote the subject for today’s lesson: Flesh-regenerating ointment.

Turning to the class, he clapped his hands together once to gain their attention. “Last week, Professor Hirsch taught you how to defend against the flesh-eating hex.” He hoped they all remembered, although who knew when it came to teenager brains. Some of the teaching going on in the school was still clearly sub-par, looking at the essay structure – or complete lack thereof – he’d had the misfortune to read when marking last week’s homework. “Today we’re going to brew the associated healing potion, the flesh-regeneration ointment. What can you remember about how the hex works? And what potions ingredients can you think of that might work to counteract it and heal the damage?”

ooc: Hellooooo! Thank you all for joining Noble and I for this term's second potion lesson. The lesson has now started - catch up is always allowed, but if you post your character arriving late, expect there to be ic consequences...

Birchwoodmom 07-03-2018 02:39 AM

"Hey, Isa" She greeted with a whispered, yet excited voice. It was always nice to sit next to a friend, especially in a class where she may need to team up or ask for help.

At Professor Nobles clap, she quickly picked up her quill and readied herself to take notes. Then her stomach dropped at his next words. They were continuing with the theme of the flesh eating hex. It had been a rather difficult lesson and she wasn't too keen on furthering the topic.

She slowly raised her hand and waited her turn "Sir, the hex slowly eats away your skin. It would be quite painful and the spell to stop it is hard." She shuddered at the thought. "Dragons blood may be an ingredient in the ointment. It has healing properties." She was having trouble thinking of other appropriate ingredients off the top of her head and decided to just listen to the other students answers, writing them down as they were given. Right or wrong, she would be able to scratch off any that weren't supposed to be there and add what was as the class continued on.

lazykitty 07-03-2018 03:01 AM

He remembered that lesson (as if one could forget getting rope burns that quickly), and wasn't quite surprised that this was potions lesson would be focused on the accompanying ointment. Actually, he appreciated it, because it was another thing that could be useful in his future career, in case a victim of the flesh-eating curse couldn't be gotten to St. Mungo's in time even with Modero.

"It acts much like a flesh-eating virus, basically eating the victim from the inside out. That said, I bet the ointment has Essence of Dittany in it, since it causes fresh skin to grow over a wound," was Ronan's flat-toned response.

And there was nothing wrong with his Gryffindoring abilities, thank you.

Ginevra 07-03-2018 03:09 AM

Daisy was trying to forget that lesson even though she sat out the activity because of traumatic reasons. She thought about potential ingredients before raising her hand and answering, "Maybe Murtlap Essence could help since it is used to treat wounds."

debpetrisor 07-03-2018 05:50 AM

Oh, how exciting was this? Daehyun was, in fact, interested in magical remedies, so this lesson would be most helpful! Not that he planned on needing this particular ointment, but it was good to keep in mind, anyway!

Raising his hand, he said, "Could there be snake fangs, professor?" They had strengthening properties, and he knew they were used in the cure for boils... and really, boils did kind of eat away your flesh if they were of a worse degree.

DaniDiNardo 07-03-2018 09:18 AM

Where she previously may have taken offence to the man’s gruff tone, Jessa simply marked her spot on the page then put the book into her bag. There was no need for the stern warning and no fear he may have needed to repeat himself because she had no intention of carrying on her reading here. Suffice to say the Ravenclaw had learned which classes and which Professors were less vigilant and cared less if she paid attention.

She turned in her seat, facing forward despite Professor Noble remaining at the back. When he was ready he would move to the front but if he didn’t it wasn’t an issue either.

Chin resting in her palm, Jessa allowed her mind a small space to wander while she waited for the lesson to begin but when it did, it had all her attention—for now. The Sixth Year had been baited enough times to be cautious about her optimism. Hog warts had a way of setting her up for disappointment.

While she listened, though, she did find a question growing in the back of her mind. Rather than answer the Professor’s, she posed her own. “Will the potion work even on injuries that weren’t necessarily caused by a hex or some other flesh eating disease.” If so then it could prove useful.

siriusblackliveson 07-03-2018 11:58 AM

Patrick had sat down at the table in the middle hoping to avoid being noticed too much during the class, he wasn't doing so hot in Potions. It was one of his lesser subjects at this point, but he wanted to keep showing up. Maybe eventually he would become a great potions master, or maybe he would just be off in his own little world. He wasn't exactly sure.

He looked around the classroom as the other students were asking questions and answering Professor Nobel's question. He couldn't pull any ingredients that would lend themselves to help cure a hex. Well, there goes getting better at potions. Instead he wrote down every single suggestion from his classmates.

Kolyander 07-03-2018 02:51 PM

Rylee had been on time and had given her usual warm greeting to the professor upon her arrival right before sitting at her usual workstation, front and center. It only took the tween a matter of seconds once her hum had it's place on her seat to notice the lack of materials at each workstation. Curious. It didn't appear that they would be needing all that much for towards lesson... maybe?

As Noble began the lesson she picked up her quill to start taking notes. They were going to be making the potion Hirsch told them about. She rather enjoyed when two different lessons could go hand-in-hand. Rylee raised her hand setting her quill down for just a moment. "When you're hit with the hex the area turns reddish-purple and it spreads outward over the skin as the flesh is eaten away." She crinkled her nose just a little bit in displeasure. It was really a very terrible way to die. "Fluxweed has healing properties so maybe we can use that." Several things had actually come to mind that she knew contained healing properties but she went with the most logical one first.

Lissy Longbottom 07-03-2018 10:04 PM

Of course Nettie remembered the spell that Hirsch had taught them about last week - but she wasn't sure how that could help clue her in to the ingredients in the potion. She thought for a bit, listening to other answers before an idea popped in her head. She raised her hand quickly.

"Could aloe be an ingredient?" she suggested. It wasn't a MAGICAL ingredient, but still a good thing to have if you were worried about skin stuff. "I know it helps soothe skin when you get a sunburn, could it maybe he used in a similar way in the potion to help flesh eaten skin heal?" she suggested.

Worth a shot, right?

TakemetotheBurrow 07-03-2018 11:37 PM

Huh, that was convienient. Junia had been wondering about that ointment and here they were making it. She sat up straighter in her chair, interest piqued. She was officially excited.

"What about billywig sting slime, professor? It's meant to have curative properties." And that certainly couldn't hurt.

Cassirin 07-04-2018 01:17 AM

The professor was going to show them a very cool potion that counteracted an equally cool (but very gross) spell. What in the world did they need to go and eat someone's skin away for? People needed their skin. It kept all their insides... on the inside. Where they belonged.

She wasn't totally sure about the spell, although, something the Head Boy said struck her as funny. "Eats them from the inside out? Doesn't it technically eat them from the outside... in? SKIN first?" She knew what he meant, but it sounded so funny. And what could go in the potion to make skin grow back? "What about vitamin A, sir? Or I mean, fish oil or something's liver... things rich in vitamin A. I think that's good for helping your cells regenerate."

Hey Ju 07-04-2018 03:01 PM

Anna wasn't the biggest fan of Potions and she was also not the biggest fan of the theory part of any lesson, so she was currently distracting herself by simply holding the quill she was supposed to be using to take notes and looking at its feathery bit as she gently moved it.

She kept quiet because she didn't know the answer and to be honest she was also not paying attention. Her quill was clearly a lot more interesting than... what Potion were they going to brew that day again? Eh, didn't matter. Her quill was still more interesting.
