Default Headmistress' Office

Past a series of lined up armoured suits, whose helmets move as if they were following you, a large stone gargoyle awaits. Intricate etches can be seen on this guardian that keeps unwanted visitors from getting past it. No matter how persuasive or good of a sweet talker you may be, the stoic gargoyle will only reveal a spiral staircase that leads up to the headmistress' office if the password is said. Unless you're one of the few that know the correct phrase to say, you will have to practice patience by sitting on the cushioned chairs placed on either side of the entrance.

Once inside the office, you will quickly realize that everything has been placed with purpose. Curtains have been evenly drawn apart to bring in the natural lighting without there being too much light, and scattered about are lavender candles that never seem to lower no matter how long the wick burns. Books of all kinds fill several bookcases, their titles covering topics from hexes and curses to ancient runes and history. A number of interesting-looking artefacts (ranging from a claw that once belonged to a sphinx, cracked bright red ashwinder eggs, a fossilized skeleton of a White River Monster, and various gems and coins) rest in glass curio cabinets, free of any dust and heavily protected. On a shelf closest to her desk rests a polished gramophone, which is known to play vinyl records of Stevie Nicks, among others, from time to time.

In the centre of the room stands a grand desk and and two visitor chairs. On the desk itself are various frames containing pictures that capture the headmistress' fondest memories: her wearing a Head Prefect badge on the grounds of Ilvermorny, her and several others having just made a great historical find deep within an Egyptian tomb, her holding a newborn clad in a pink blanket with a man's body cropped off, and several more. The remainder of the desk consists of neat piles of paperwork and an intricate golden hourglass, covered in runes, that will begin steadily dropping sand the moment conversation begins, signifying how much time you have left in the office.

OOC: Please post waiting outside of the gargoyle unless your character knows the password or is being accompanied inside by Headmistress Hawthorne or a professor.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Daisy was waiting outside of the gargoyle, hoping to have a little heart to heart with Headmistress Hawthorne. Ever since the loss of her father, a couple of months ago, her scholar aspirations had reduced and it was stressing her. What to say?

The headmistress was making her way through a stack of paperwork, her record player playing in the background. Besides holding an Ancient Runes lesson earlier in the day, she had otherwise been cooped up inside her office taking care of administrative business. It was just another day at Hogwarts, thankfully one that didn’t involve any dramatics or everything going terribly wrong.

Even though she was quite focused on her work, Regina did notice her hourglass when sand started to slowly fall down to the bottom half. For a moment she was confused as nobody but herself, as well as the portraits of the previous heads of the school, were there. But she quickly deduced that there was someone, who she did not know, that was wanting to speak to her. As no one was entering the office already, she made the assumption that it wasn't a professor. A student must have been waiting outside, unable to get past the gargoyle.

Setting her paperwork aside, the woman rose from her desk and made her way out of the office and down the stairs. Upon her arrival, the stone guardian stepped aside and revealed a fourth year Hufflepuff, one that she had been asking Paul about often considering what had happened during the feast.

"Hello, Miss Swann. How have you been?" she said to the girl, stepping aside. "Come on in and grab yourself a seat."

Daisy entered the Headmistress's office and sat down with a sigh. "Well, I have slowly been coping over the past few weeks since the time at the opening feast where I got the news my father had died. However, it has affected my educational aspirations. I don't feel as eager to go to classes especially Muggle Studies. The trouble is, I know my mother would make me focus all my grief on my schoolwork."

Daisy paused and looked at Headmistress Hawthorne with an apologetic expression written on her face.

It didn't take long for the both of them to make it up the stairs and settled into her office. She quietly walked over to her record player and stopped it before taking her own seat. Her paperwork remained set aside, and the sand in the hourglass was steadily falling, perhaps more gradual than it normally would have.

Regina rested an arm on the desk, her hand resting on her chin, while Daisy spoke. The woman didn't say a single word, her expression remaining quiet neutral, as she let the Hufflepuff say what she needed to say. Understanding where the girl currently was mentally was important before offering any words.

Once she fell silent, the headmistress spoke tenderly. "I am glad to hear that there has been improvement. It is a difficult thing to cope with, but it is essential. You are also not alone, Miss Swann. There are many here who have lost someone dear to them, and you have much support here at Hogwarts."

As for the news about her eagerness to go (or not go) to class, an eyebrow rose naturally. Especially at the mention of Muggle Studies. "It is important that you have time to grieve, my dear. It is also important to keep up with your academics," she stated objectively. There was a brief pause before she continued, wanting to gain more insight. "What are your aspirations now, after everything? And what is going on with Muggle Studies in particular?"

When Headmistress Hawthorne mentioned that Daisy would have a support network, the young witch rubbed her forehead. "I have been the 'listener' or the 'shoulder to cry on'. Expressing my feelings is something that I do find hard. I either clam up or I can't stop talking which I am sure makes things hard for anyone trying to console or comfort me."

At the Headmistress's question regarding Muggle Studies, Daisy took some time to think but her brain was not helping her. "Muggle Studies in the past made me feel connected to my father when we were apart. Now he's gone, that connection is lost. I know it sounds weird and I wish I could tell you what's going on inside my head but I can't."

The talk of her future did brighten Daisy a fraction. "My future aspirations relate to Quidditch either as a professional player or working in the Department of Magical Games and Sports at the Ministry of Magic. I also would like to join my Aunt Helena at her bakery."

The woman simply nodded her head at Daisy's explanation about how expressing her feelings was something that was difficult for her to do. Truth be told, everyone, even herself, sometimes had trouble with that. But she could understand the Hufflepuffs situation. "While it may be hard at times, it is important that you do find a way to express yourself. It helps with the grieving process, and it does help in the long run make sense of everything. Even if it may be hard, your friends and family will be there for you no matter what."

What she said next about Muggle Studies and the connection it created with her father when they were apart caused Regina to steadily nod her head. She remained silent for a few moments before speaking. "I don't think that sounds weird at all," the headmistress replied. "I actually think continuing with Muggle Studies would be beneficial. Even though your father may not be here physically with us and that may be difficult to cope with for the time being, he is still part of you. If you felt that connection in that particular class, I think it would help you keep his memory alive, so to speak."

As for the girl's future, the woman had this to say, "I think those are solid aspirations, Miss Swann. Have you discussed this, as well as your thoughts about Muggle Studies, with your Head of House? That seems like something Professor Myers ought to know and may also be able to provide his own insight on."

When the Headmistress mentioned expressing grief, Daisy replied with, "I did focus my grief and making my father proud during the house Quidditch trials. It must have done some good since I obtained the position of Keeper."

Daisy nodded in thought as the Headmistress discussed Muggle Studies with her. "I think you are right, Headmistress."

As for the question of if Daisy had discussed Muggle Studies and future aspirations with Professor Myers, Daisy shook her head. "I think I'll get onto that as soon as possible."

She carefully got up but stayed standing on the spot. "Thanks for letting me talk with you, Headmistress. I think I am going to go and try to see if Professor Myers is free."

Again Regina found herself nodding her head. "You did well in focusing your grief on that and using it to do something that you knew would make your father proud. If you apply that to everything else, things will get easier over time," she reassuringly said, thinking of what she had said before about Muggle Studies. "And congratulations on making the team," the headmistress added with a smile.

It was at this point she quickly glanced over at the hourglass. The sand in it was nearly empty in the upper half of it. Of course, she was more than ready to ignore that and continue the conversation as needed. However, when she returned her gaze to Daisy, she saw that the girl had already risen from her seat, saying that she was going to see if Paul was free.

The woman then rose from her chair and walked over to the door with the Hufflepuff. "Any time, Miss Swann. Any time. If you need anything, anything at all, please feel more than welcome to come to me, alright?"

Quinn stopped roughly twelve feet from the gargoyle and rolled nervously on the balls of feet. It was a Friday, so Quinn was dressed casually in faded black jeans, and under her black leather jacket (which as of late was becoming a signature look for her), she wore a dark grey shirt adorned with the blazing pattern of a Phoenix across the front. And despite it being Casual Friday, Quinn was suddenly convinced she made a mistake and should have worn her robes instead.

She almost turned back to go change, but forced herself to close the gap instead. Honestly, she had no idea of what to expect for the meeting with the Headmistress, and as such, hadn't had a chance to truly prepare herself. This she found rather unnerving.

Quinn timidly stepped up to the gargoyle and realized for the first time she had no idea how to proceed or let the Headmistress known she was there. Did she knock? Did she tap it with her wand?

She opted the latter and drew wand, tapping the gargoyle twice in its chest, and stood back, waiting.

*STARES AT YOU*

The gargoyle remained very stoic as the girl approached and stood there. It was registering her appearance. This was the one that the headmistress was waiting for, yes?

Tap. Tap.

"There is no need for that, young lady," it suddenly said, temporarily breaking the silence before saying no more. It soon stepped aside before the girl decided to tap her wand against its chest all over again. The staircase leading to the office was revealed, where an open door at the top and a headmistress seated at her desk awaited.

Oh! Was she a bit surprised that the stone gargoyle talked? Yes, yes she was. Should she have been? No, not really. Quinn cleared her throat. "Sorry." The wand vanished back into the inside pocket of her jacket.

She stood there awkwardly a moment, staring up the stairs. "Em...Thanks." She gave the gargoyle a quick nod and started up the stairs. The door was already open, and the Headmistress had full view of her, so Quinn didn't feel knocking to announce her presence was necessary, and stepped into the office.

If she were the type, she might have gasped. As it was her eyes didn't know what to take in first and it was a few seconds before she stepped casually over to the books, examining them without touching. And then the artifacts and objects in their glass cases, which she actually lingered on slightly longer than the books. Which spoke volumes about how interesting the objects were.

She honestly would have spent longer examining them with her eyes, but well, there was this whole meeting thing scheduled. Quinn reluctantly made her way to the Headmistress' desk and took a seat, eyes examining the photos briefly before, first looking over her shoulder back to the display cabinet, and then finally resting on the Headmistress. "Hi. You wanted to speak to me about...things?" She had an idea of what those things were, or could be. Everything with her parents, the letter, and now the Moons; the astronomy lesson; maybe even that tall-tale she told during summer (hopefully not), but Quinn wasn't going to bring them up. She'd wait for the Headmistress to do that.

There was no need at all for Quinn to announce her presence. The girls' footsteps in a rather quiet office, even with the talking portraits, were heard. Her eyes glanced over to the Ravenclaw, who was casually looking through her personal belongings, and they quickly returned to the file on her desk. She continued reading, flipping through papers and other notes, until the girl was seated in front of her.

Closing the file and placing her hands over it, Regina smiled. "Good afternoon, Miss Kevelle," she said, acting as if she hadn't heard the rest of what the girl had said. Yes, there were things that she wanted to discuss, but formalities were in order. Plus she was in no rush to dive right into things. "How were your classes today?"

Then, suddenly, she made a gesture to a plate that one of the house-elves had brought up earlier. "Biscuit?"

Quinn narrowed her eyes curiously at the Headmistress. Whenever she assumed she knew what to expect with Professor Hawthorne, the professor seemed wildly intent on acting in a way entirely different. It was disconcerting to Quinn, who both navigated her way through the world by, and prided herself on, her ability to read people.

She took a biscuit, hesitated a moment, then took two more. "Thank you." She quietly ate one of the biscuits, before answering.

"Classes were good," she said casually, then lit up slightly as she continued. "Especially transfiguration. It was positively grand!" Transfiguration had quickly proven itself to be not only her best subject, but her favorite as well. "We were learning the Avifors spell today."

She smiled wide enough to show her dimples and started on her second biscuit while trying to discreetly see if there was a title Quinn could make out on the file Professor Hawthorne had been reading.

With the file closed and her attention focused solely on the first year in from tor her, the eye narrowing didn't go missed by the headmistress. Though, in true Regina Hawthorne fashion, she didn't comment on that. She was playing hard to read and she knew it. Many at Hogwarts knew as much about her, and they could attest to that meaning she was being very neutral, simply gaining intel. It honestly was a good skill to master, in addition to being able to read people well.

At least she could say for certain that most first years couldn't resist biscuits. She wasn't the least bit surprised when the Ravenclaw helped herself to more than one.

The woman was pleased to see the girl light up when she started talking about Transfiguration. "Ahh, yes. A fun spell to learn," she replied. "Would you say Transfiguration is your favourite subject then? Or is there another class? Astronomy? Charms? Defence?"

Good luck reading the title on the file. Regina's hands were right over it, purposefully too.

She sighed mentally. All she could make out was a slight bit of the last letter, and even that left it open to being all but one of the letters. Quinn was fairly certain it wasn't an 'o'. But even on that, she couldn't be 100%.

Giving up, she leaned back in her chair and nodded. "Yes. I enjoy transfiguration the most by far." It helped as well that her wand consistently worked with her in transfiguration. "I like CoMC and divination. And potions and runes too, even though they can be quite challenging for me sometimes. I think I'll enjoy charms and defence against the dark arts more once I've bonded fully with my wand. It can be temperamental in those classes." As for the rest, she didn't particularly enjoy all that much, even if she did see the usefulness in them, like herbology.

And astronomy was, by far, her least favorite subject for several reasons, but Reese was trying to share what he loved about it with her, so she was still doing okay in it, overall.

While the Ravenclaw spoke, Regina was mentally taking notes. So Transfiguration was the best, followed by some go the more popular subjects in the school. She was slightly surprised by the mentioned of her own subject, however. Normally, unless there was a keen interest in it, Ancient Runes wasn't very high on many people's lists of favourites.

"Sometimes it is the more challenging classes that are . Provides you with that challenge and requires more of a drive to succeed in it," the headmistress commented. She didn't mention the lack of Astronomy being brought up. She had assumed as much, based on what she had been told.

"And how has Hogwarts been treating you, outside of classes?" she asked, moving into more personal terrain, as she moved the file away and tucked it into a drawer. She intentionally left the question open-ended. If she wanted to talk about professors she liked or friends she had made, the option was there. If she'd rather talk about the struggles of finding a quiet place for violin-playing, that was an option as well. Needless to say, the woman was interested in seeing how the first year would respond.

"I like challenges," said Quinn, a light smile gracing her face. The fact those classes could be challenging for her only heightened her enjoyment of them, rather than decreased it. Yes, it could be frustrating sometimes, but it gave her something to work towards.

Quinn regarded the Headmistress curiously for a moment. Honestly, she'd been expecting that inquiry of her classes to lead into a discussion about getting kicked out of Astronomy, which quite frankly was on the Professor, not her. Had she been holding hands with Reese? Yes. Had the no hand holding rule been posted outside class? No. She even double checked before the next lesson. Had she disobeyed the request to stop holding hands in anyway? No.

She had plenty to say on the matter, true. In part because she had gone over it in her head so much leading up to this meeting because she was sure it'd be brought up. She would tell her side of it, if asked, but wasn't about to bring it up herself. Doing so, in her experience, never worked out well for the child. Better to let the adults ask directly first.

But Professor Hawthorne hadn't brought it up, not yet anyway. The topic instead turned to how she liked Hogwarts outside of class. Not only had the question taken Quinn by surprise, but as she looked away to consider the question, she realized she hadn't actually given much thought to how she was liking Hogwarts over all.

Quinn opened her mouth to speak, and closed it again when she realized she hadn't yet figured out anything to say. It was a broad question. "Well, em, I don't really have any complaints...Honestly, I haven't thought about it really before. I like to read to the animals in the barn, but I also miss my dogs. And the castle has great acoustics, especially when I get to use the room of requirement to play," given that it models itself to the user's needs and all.

She sat quiet for a moment, eyes staring blankly off to the side as she thought on it more. There was the big, obvious thing in that being here meant being away from her parents, which she was finding to be rather nice. Yet that was another thing she'd talk about only if the Headmistress brought it up first. Plus, with all that seemed to be going on with that, it might not be a problem much longer. She closed her eyes briefly as she fought to suppress the doubt and anxiety that came with that thought.

"Oh, and I made a couple of new friends," she added, and her cheeks flushed a bit pink as she was mainly thinking about Reese when she said that. None of her new friends were in her house though, which didn't actually bother Quinn really. She wasn't one that needed a lot of friends, nor was she the warmest or friendliest of people. Honestly, she was content with most people keeping their distance. And well, after getting kicked out of Astronomy, most of her house seemed quite happy to do just that and she honestly didn't mind.

Quinn shrugged finally, not quite thinking of anything more to bring up. "Overall, I think it's treating me well."

"Good," the headmistress said, satisfied. If school wasn't challenging or thought provoking or didn't shape you over time, then there really was no point in it. Regina was pleased the the young Ravenclaw seemed up to that task. It showed a lot about her character.

As did getting kicked out of Astronomy class, though she was sure that would come up in time. Naturally, hopefully. This didn't need to be an interrogation as what had been done was done and consequences made. However, it was still worthy of discussion. In the meantime, she was just going to keep on propping that mind of Quinn's question by question.

It seemed that the latest question of hers took the girl by surprise. She was actually thinking about it. Regina was internally rather curious at what the hold up was, but remained very neutral externally, simply waiting for Quinn to gather her thoughts.

The headmistress nodded when the first year did speak, taking in that there really weren't any complaints, that she read to the animals, that the castle had great acoustics... And then there was a moment of silence. The woman placed her chin on her hand, waiting.

I made a couple of new friends. Interesting...

"And who might those friends be?" she casually asked. Then, she backed up the girl's final comment with yet another one of her questions. "I'm glad that Hogwarts is treating you well. Not homesick much then, I take it?"

Home sick? No, no, no, no. "No, I..." she hesitated a moment, "I guess I never really got the whole concept of feeling homesick. I mean, home is just a place to me really. A building. And I'm....rather used to being on my own and taking care of myself." No, she wasn't homesick, because she'd never actually known the true meaning of home. Quinn shrugged. "I miss my dogs, and our house elf, Keesey, but the fact I am here instead of there, why would that be upsetting? It's just a place."

As for her friends, that slight blush tinted her cheeks again. "Well, em, Reese Prichard..." She looked away briefly to compose herself better. "And his sister, Rylee. And Daniel Yoon. They're both second year Gryffindors. And Eria Lovecraft also. She's a fifth year Slytherin." And that was it. "But my two friends from before Hogwarts go here too. Beth Greyvson and Octavia Loftbottom. Beth is in Slytherin and Octavia is in Hufflepuff with Reese."

She was silent for a moment, her mind still turning over the other question. "Do people actually get homesick? I mean I've read books where the characters feel homesick, but I never realized people actually feel like that in real life."

Face still remaining neutral, internally the headmistress was rather surprised that the girl wasn't homesick. But, then again, perhaps the first year didn't understand what she meant. Home meant more than just a building. Home meant family. And it was noted that family wasn't mentioned, besides the dogs and house-elf.

The woman slowly nodded, though didn't say anything. She just allowed for Quinn to carry on.

"Ahh, yes," she did finally say after the Ravenclaw listed her friends. "Mr. Prichard in particular I've heard about rather recently..."

She was going to let that linger. Regina was certain the girl sitting on the other side of the desk would know exactly what she was alluding to. However, the question was how would Quinn respond. Would she ask? Would she jump into her side of what happened? Or would she avoid the subject completely?

"People do actually get homesick," the woman replied with a nod. "Many often miss being at home, though that is mostly because they miss their parents, siblings, and other aspects of life at home that they don't get away at school." Regina herself often did feel homesickness, mostly when it came to her daughter -- that, though, was a complicated matter. But they weren't there to talk about her life story, nope. "You don't miss your parents?"

Quinn opened her mouth as if to speak, but nothing came out. Finally she closed it again and nodded. "Yes." She wasn't sure what more to say just yet on the subject of Reese, in part because the Headmistress was so skilled at not giving anything away. Quinn had little idea whether or not she'd need to justify her feelings to Professor Hawthorne, or defend them, or merely confirm that they were a...thing.

Fortunately, the Headmistress moved on to answering her question about the reality of being homesick. Quinn simply listened, taking it all in, though little of the Professor's description was new to her. She'd read plenty of stories featuring homesickness to grasp what it was, yet she still couldn't fathom it herself. Which, judging by the Professor's question, she might have picked up on that.

Quinn looked away, focusing on the corner of the desk without really seeing it. At last she shrugged and then shook her head.
"No...not really." She looked back up at the Headmistress, studying her; searching. Professor Grimsbane surely told her about her home life, hadn't she? It was difficult to say. Finally, Quinn continued a little guardedly. "They're never around all that much to start with." She shrugged again, as if to suggest it was no big deal.

"Professor, about Reese..." The words came out in order to change the subject so quickly she'd hadn't even known what they were, or how to proceed. She blinked up at the Headmistress while her thoughts caught up. "Er...well, yes.
We are, em..."
She wasn't even sure what to call it? Going steady seemed like an older way of describing it. And, they really hadn't gone on a date yet, so saying they were dating didn't feel right either. "Well, we consider each other boyfriend and girlfriend, yes. A lot of people seem upset by that..." She shrugged it off much the same way she shrugged her parents not being around much off.

Since she was on the subject now anyway. "And with Astronomy, I...we didn't know. He's the first boyfriend I've had, and Professor Kennedy," she was unable to keep the slight disdain out of her voice as she said his name, "didn't list any rule against holding hands in class with the rest of the rules listed by the door. We didn't know. And we let go when asked, without arguing." Okay, maybe Reese did give her a quick peck on the cheek, but she hadn't asked him to, and boyfriend or not, his actions were his own.

"Alright, yes. I might have been a bit crossed and looked at him such for a moment, but I didn't argue, or say anything rude...or anything at all really." Honestly, if having a student look at you crossed was upsetting enough to kick them out of class, you ought to consider teaching a different age group. You really don't have the composition to teach preteens and teens. "And honestly, if I did look at him crossedly, it was very briefly. I complied, without hesitation, when the class was instructed to come to the window, at which I was promptly kicked out of class for not following the rules, on top of losing ten points as well." Which, in Quinn's mind was overkill for briefly looking crossed at someone. Sure, ten points lost for it she could see but getting kicked out, especially with point loss on top of it, that was overkill.

"I didn't say anything or argue then, either. Anyway, I wasn't being disruptive or defiant as far as I know. And certainly not on purpose. I...I'm just trying to not get noticed honestly. I'm sorry for getting kicked out of a class."

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

She'd made a stop off or two after leaving Ancient Runes, just to check on a few potions and make sure she hadn't missed the window of time in which she had to add the next set of ingredients. After that, the Ravenclaw made a beeline for the stone gargoyles that guarded the Headmistress' office.

She had something of a proposition...no...not a proposition, it was more of a request. One that she hoped would be given serious consideration for her own sanity. Jessa lightly drummed her fingers at her side, already having sent word up in case the woman was inside. The waiting didn't bother her much. It gave her enough time to really think about how she wanted the idea presented.

In the past, the Headmistress had proven rather open minded to her pursuits and as far as Jessa's interests went, this was actually further along the tame side of things.

Further knowledge, that was all she was requesting. Nothing more.

The mere 'yes' coming from Quinn didn't surprise her. As far as she could tell, the Ravenclaw was being cautious, keeping her guard up. In all honesty, Regina could empathise with that. She too had her moments, though for entirely different reasons. If the girl wanted to elaborate, then she would on her own accord. The truth, she knew, always came out in the end at some point.

Again, she wasn't thrown off by the fact that the girl wasn't homesick. Or, at least, missing people, such as her parents, from home. Celestia had filled her in on those details, but it was a differently thing entirely coming from the source. "I'm sorry that they aren't around much," she quietly said, with a short nod of her head. "I hope you've found home at Hogwarts."

Then the subject changed rather rapidly, back to the topic of Quinn's friends ... Reese more specifically. Was this topic the lesser of the two 'evils'? Of course, the headmistress remained quiet at this point. She just let the first year talk until she had nothing more to say.

"Thank you for sharing your truth with me," Regina responded. "Now, I'm not here to tell you who you should or should not pick as a companion. That is for you and fate to decide, and what others think really shouldn't matter. However, what occurred Astronomy is something that does need to be discussed. For starters, there is a school rule about Public Displays of Affection. Professor Kennedy in particular even highlights PDA in his own personal classroom rules, and hand-holding does fall under PDA. Now, I can say that I would have handled the situation differently if this occurred in my class," -- she didn't particularly agree with kicking Quinn out when it was primarily Reese who was rousing trouble with his pecking and then saying the situation was rubbish -- "but Professor Kennedy's word is final. What's done is done, and it's time to move on. But I do hope a lesson was learned here about PDA and when it is appropriate. There is a time and a place, and the middle of a lesson is simply not one of them."

She was sure Quinn was well aware of that. As for Reese, well, eleven year old boys were rather immature, in her opinion. "I do hope you can help Mr. Prichard understand when it is appropriate as well."

She had remained in the Ancient Runes classroom a little longer than usual, to let those who needed a few extra minutes to finish the in-class assignment she had assigned. Once they were all out, she had exited the office with the assignments obediently trailing after her.

But she didn't immediately take the narrow staircase that would take her right outside of her office. Instead she took the long way down, just to make sure no one was up to anything mischievous, pick up a potion from Penelope (which was hidden away in her pocket), and make sure Myrtle didn't flood the bathroom again. Eventually, though, the clicking of her heels echoed down the corridor.

"Hello, Miss Cambridge," the woman stated to the sixth year, the Ancient Runes assignments still following her and the gargoyle stepping aside without a word. "I hope you haven't been waiting here too long. After you."
