Default DADA Lesson Two - Peek-a-boo!

On a late-April morning, you might find yourself heading towards the first floor for another Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson to learn about another form of the dark arts. Expecting the unexpected might have become the norm but what you might not have expected is how dark the room is.

As you step inside, you notice that the room has a gloomy look to it. No normal lighting can be seen and any natural daylight has been obstructed by large black drapes. Instead, small lanterns can be seen floating around the room, only giving you the slightest indication as to what's there. What you might see might confuse you more than the lanterns do: the classroom looks less like a normal classroom and more like a long stretch of corridor.

The weirdest part of this entire scene is what stands directly opposite you. Various doors line the 'wall' opposite, similar to the kind you'd find around the castle. The only difference is that above the doors, illuminating brighter than any light in the room, are names of the students themselves.

Confused? Hirsch would be surprised if you weren't.

Speaking of Hirsch, where is he? Those who are observant enough might notice that there's no sign of the Defence Professor anywhere and no direct indication as to what you're meant to do. Where was the man and why wasn't he here yet? And did that mean that this was the right room or not?

While you're left pondering, come in and try and make yourselves as comfortable as possible. Or, you could go into the room marked with your name and discover what lies beyond...

Just remember: constant vigilance.

class progression:
- MINI ACTIVITY:
_____- Narrator post
_____- Narrator post
_____- Narrator post
_____- Narrator post
- What went well in that activity? What would you do differently? What would you improve on?
- What do you know about the Hidebehind?
- MAIN ACTIVITY: WATER FIGHT!
- That's all folks!

OOC: Please make sure you're familiar with Hirsch's rules as well as the SS site rules before posting. Class will continue tomorrow (eveningtime GMT+1). Class has already begun but you're more than welcome to jump in if you haven't done so already. Just pretend as though your charrie has been there the entire time. Hope you have fun! ^^

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

After his out cry of wanting to be let out of the room, a door in front of him opened up and without even waiting for a second longer, the very brave Ravenclaw dashed towards the door and got out. Only when he was out of the room did he look back and saw that the rooms were vanishing and it was revealed that the attacker had been.....a dummy.

A DUMMY!

He felt his whole face burn up in embarrasment and shame when he realised this. The only thing that kept him a bit more sane was the fact that it had been dark when he had screamed so probably no one knew that it had been him. But he knew, and his Head of House as well which was far more embarrassing than the students knowing.

He turned his back to the place where the rooms had been and saw the Professor standing there next to the desk. For the first time ever, Dorian did not greet the man. He held his head low and silently walked over to the table that had water and slabs of chocolate and picked up not 1 but 2 pieces.

He needed it, ok?

Again without saying a word or even giving the Professor a glance, the third year began to eat the chocolate in silence. He only looked up when a question had been asked but he did not bother answering. The only thing he learned was that he was officially a coward and that he did not like the Professor at the moment.

Patrick smiled. It looked as if each of his classmates had seen a ghost and he had been smart enough to stay out of harms way this time around. "I feel like this activity taught me that I know what my bounds are, and that maybe eventually I'll have the skills that the other students in the room have." He was trying to down play his fears.

Maybe he should have gotten a bit braver and just gone into the room.

Well he did until he saw someone laying on the ground, oh no, "EMMALYN?" He looked at Chloe who had equally shouted Emmalyn's name and then at Hirsch in hopes that since he was the adult in the room would handle it. But poor Emmalyn was his friend and he didn't want to see her hurt. Before he realized what he was doing he was taking the piece of chocolate he had grabbed and walked closer to Emmalyn hoping that maybe some chocolate would bring her back to the group. "Emmalyn? You okay? Have some chocolate." he mentioned as he left the chocolate within her reach and a nervous smile on his face.

Leave it to Patrick to have zero fear once the activity was over.

She froze, arms still wrapped tight around it, and listened for any sort of clue that it was still alive. If it had been alive to begin with. There were far too many things it could have been to even start guessing.

Before she could figure out the state of health of her opponent, another door flew open and light was all around. Professor Hirsch was talking to them, directing them to get chocolate and water. Emmalyn, however, was unable to loosen her grip around the now known dummy. Her arms trembled and she was on the verge of bawling over the relief that she wasn't going to die and she hadn't just murdered anything.

The entire ordeal had ended far too abruptly for her to fully process that it was just a staged test of her reactions. The disappearance of the walls around and the new light flooding in made her squint while her eyes adjusted to the brightness.

Her mind was faster in rejoining reality than her body. As she lay on the floor, arms still tightly wrapped around the dummy, all that ran through her mind was that the next time she'd be sure to lead with a punch or a kick before flinging herself upon a possible attacker. If she'd only disorientated her opponent first, it wouldn't have been able to fight back as hard.

Jessa squinted into the darkness, noting the subtle darkening in shade that suggested—or rather confirmed—the presence of something else in the room. It wasn’t fear that gripped her, but intrigue. Now she wished even more she could’ve introduced some light and a part of her wanted to be IN there to get a first hand examination done but she would settle for what she could get.

The shuffling continued to get louder and the Ravenclaw could feel her own muscles tensing with anticipation as if she was the one in harm’s way.

Then it was all over.

Wait what...?

Jessa placed a hand over the eye that connected to Jane’s and watched as the room opened up before her. The walls came down, a wide room opened up and there standing by a table with the usual mats placed all around was the Professor. Was the exercise over already?

With a hand still over her left eye to once again prevent the double vision, Jessa got up from her spot on the floor and moved closer for the official beginning of the lesson. On the way to the Professor she collected her doll, inspecting her briefly to ensure the unseen entity hadn’t gotten to her in some way. It was yet another disadvantage. Her skin wasn’t connected to that of the doll’s. She’d never be able to get an entirely accurate feel for any situation by sending Jane.

Not particularly traumatised, Jessa decided against the refreshments, instead tapping her eye to end the charm and return her vision to normal. “I’d be more prepared, I think. This exercise has taught me that while Jane serves her purpose of surveillance, I may need to tinker with her charms a bit to make her more versatile. Either that or animate another doll specifically for circumstances that require a fully functional witch or wizard—at the very least a doll with greater ability for interaction.”

Probably not what he meant but it WAS what she learned and now she had a new project to work on.

And Jessa gave an answer that was slightly unrelated to the question. Slightly.

Was Hirsch confused about the answer? Yes. Was he surprised? Absolutely not.

The man furrowed his eyebrows in thought, glancing between her and the doll she had brought along. At first, he was confused as to why she'd left the classroom so suddenly but the appearance of the doll had made a bit more sense. This was Jessa Cambridge, after all.

But her answer? Her answer took a little bit longer to take in than normal. Something that stuck out the most to him was the last phrase she had just said. "Very interesting answer, Jessa, and very clever use of something else to make you look into a situation without being there yourself." It was a safe option but a very clever one. "I'm curious: when you say 'a doll with greater ability for interaction', what do you mean? How do you want to improve the level of interaction you had in the room?"

......

Well.

Hirsch didn't know what to say to this. This was coming from the same girl who skipped into the room, right? But something told him that this wasn't a joke and not something Miss Kettleburn was using as a way of covering up for something else which was what made this..... worse.

"Well, er," he started, adjusting his glasses, "I apologise for that. Were you scared of not knowing what's in the dark or the fact that you can't see what's in the dark?" Though, she didn't have to answer that but it was also relevant to the lesson as a whole.

Only, none of the above happened.

Except for the light. There was light, but it hadn't come from her wand. Everything fell into place, as the Hufflepuff adjusted her eyes to the new scene before her. A dummy?! Had she known that, she would have used Immobulus a long time ago!

Also--oh, heyyy, Professor! "That was fun! Can we do it again?!" she greeted. Now that she knew there'd been a dummy in the room with her, she had so many new ideas! "Thanks for the chocolate and water!" Her energy was returning to her now that she knew she wasn't going to die alone in some mysterious room in the castle. She grabbed a selection of refreshments then headed into the much more welcoming classroom.

So what did she learn? She raised her hand. "Had I known that had been a dummy in the room with me, I'd have cast...maybe Immobulus? Something in the back of my head thought maybe you were in the room, too, and no way am I casting on a professor! Plus, I didn't think it'd be too smart to cast when I didn't know what I was casting on," she said. "I think I'd like to be better prepared, too. Why wouldn't any light spells work? What would we do if that happened to us outside of class?"

It was then that she noticed Emmalyn, lying somewhat lifelessly on the floor. "Professor! Emmalyn!" she said. She abandoned her treats and stood looking toward the girl. She didn't know whether to run to her side or to wait for someone more experienced to help out.

Again? She wanted to face the dark room again?!

The students were full of surprising reactions today. Really.

"You're very welcome, Miss Kemp. And you're going to do something.... similar." Though, not quite. And that was all he was going to say about that.

Her answer? Her answer had earned her a dimpled!smile from the Defence Professor. "I'm touched you didn't want to cast on me and I'm glad you thought about what it is you might've been facing. Immobulus would've been a good choice of spell to use, the only problem would've been getting the target right because, well, you can't see what it is you're facing." Something he'll touch on later. "That was my magic. I wanted you all to face a situation where you can't always rely on your eyes or light to guide you." Something he'll also get onto later. "Well done!"

At least, not in a ‘now I know what exactly is lurking in the room with me because I can see it’ way. Although… had the shadowy figure actually stopped when she’d asked if it liked cookies. Because she was totally willing to sacrifice some of her stash if it meant being left alone…

The shuffler was obviously keeping away from her, though, so maybe it didn’t like cookies. Or tall blonde fourth year prefects, hopefully. She was staying ready for anything either way, except she really hadn’t expected her surroundings to basically melt away gradually, let alone the door to freedom that had opened up in front of herself. The fact the shuffler had been revealed to be a dummy answered several of her questions, in any case. Plus, now she knew where Professor Hirsch was.

“Hi Professor Hirsch,” she said, giving him a grin as she walked up to help herself to a piece of chocolate and a glass of water. For once, she wasn’t going to question if the offering had an ulterior motive, since she trusted him.

Hmm… going to take a seat on a mat and nibbling on the chocolate, she thought about the questions. “I learned that it’s better to do whatever it takes to stay calm in a strange situation?”, she offered after a moment. That and it doesn’t hurt to distract whatever is stalking her. Not that she particularly wanted to be stalked by mystery beings in the darkness ever again.

The grin was returned with a dimpled!smile of his own. "Hey, Stasya."

This answer? This answer was probably the least surprising of the ones he'd received and one that immediately made his face light up. "Exactly. This is exactly it! It's human nature to panic in a situation like this, everyone would do it, but under a panicked state, you're more likely to be off-target and not have as much confidence as you might do if you were feeling calmer." Which, of course, wasn't the same for everyone but this was generally the case.

"Well done, by the way."

Did Hirsch blame him for taking two pieces of chocolate? No. Did he judge him for it? Not at all.

But he did give him a very curious look. The lack of greeting was, well, it was noted. It was a questionable period in the boy's life so this could be put down to teenage hormones acting up. But then there was the silence and something.... made him feel uneasy.

He shouldn't be concerned, right?

This was..... an interesting answer.

"You have plenty of time to hone your magic and gain the skills you need. No one in this room has started off knowing everything about Defence and magic, including myself." He did spend a lot of time in detention, after all, but that wasn't the point. "You're literally here to learn and figure out what it is you can do and what it is you need to improve on. If you fail along the way, it's just part of the learning process." Something to think about.

"Just keep working on it and you will have the skills you need."

When it looked like no one else was going to answer, Hirsch turned to the class as a whole. "An interesting set of answers, I have to say." Some were more unexpected than others but that wasn't the point.

"I owe you an explanation," he started, "We, as humans, rely very much on our sense of sight. It's not the strongest of our senses but it's the one we use all the time and the one we rely on to get us out of difficult or dangerous situations. Being without it would be incredibly difficult to live without."

Pause.

"But there are certain situations where the conditions might be too dark or whatever you're facing against is invisible or you simply cannot see what you're up against. Because of this, we can't always rely on our sense of sight and we have to use our other senses to help us out of that situation." Something a few of them did do, which he was very happy about. "A lot of you tried to add light to the situation, literally, to try and see and I don't blame you. But, bear in mind that that doesn't always work. You need to learn to use your senses collectively in a defensive situation. Just because you can't see something, doesn't mean you can't defeat it." Was he making any sense?

"Now, an example of a situation where you'd use this is against a dark creature called a Hidebehind." Did they see where he was going with this? "Before I start talking too much again, what can you tell me about the Hidebehind?"

OOC: *gives out cookies to everyone who managed to read all of that*

Great set of answers, you guys! This next question is super simple: what do you know about the Hidebehind? Please try not to copy something someone else has already said. And weird and whacky answers are aaaaaalways welcome ^^

If any of this doesn't make sense, please feel free to give me a nudge and I'd be happy to go through it with you <3

I'll continue the lesson tomorrow at roughly 10pm GMT+1.

Thanks, lovelies

Hidebehind? Nettie had NO idea what that was. It sounded made up, to be honest. Still, eager to learn more about it and figure out what the heck that was, she picked up her book and flipped through the chapters. It took her a few moments, but she finally stumbled upon the chapter. She read it over a bit - it was actually SUPER interesting - before raising her hand.

"Professor, a Hidebehind is half demiguise, half ghoul," she answered. She found herself reading ahead in the chapter after she answered because that was CRAZY and really intriguing...like, how did that even HAPPEN? Was there just one? WERE THERE A LOT?

It almost brought back memories of things that had happened within this very castle that he had happily placed in a box in the back of his mind. And now....

The man swore under his breath in German as he picked up a glass of water and made his way over towards Miss Walsh and Mr Dooley, who'd brought the chocolate. He knelt on the floor beside her, placing the glass of water down on the floor next to the chocolate. "Emmalyn? Emmalyn, can you hear me?" he asked softly, giving her shoulder a slight shake, "You're completely safe, nothing is going to hurt you in here." Which was ironic given the name of the subject he taught.

"How about we start with taking some deep breaths? And then you can have some of the things we've brought for you. There's water," Which was not very exciting. "And Mr Dooley here's even given you his chocolate."

Move arms! She was in a fight with her own body, trying to will it to cooperate. She clearly heard Maddie call for help. Bless her heart, she was trying to be nice, but how embarrassing. Emmalyn wished she could crawl back in the darkness of the room. Then Patrick brought over chocolate to help. While that was a great idea, her arms were still not full cooperating. The smell, however, was drifting in and slowly relaxing her tense arms. She wanted to say thank you, but she wasn't sure what would come out of her mouth if she tried. Not quiet yet.

Then, Professor Hirsch was suddenly next to her. She wasn't sure were he had come from, but she was thankful he was there. She felt her shoulder being shaken, which further brought her back to the present. "I" she squeaked then cleared her throat. "I'm okay. Yes, I'm okay." Her fists were first to relax, followed by her shoulders. After only a few more deep breaths, her arms finally released their tight hold of the dummy.

Her eyes met his and she mustered up a smile. "I'm okay, yes. But, please don't make me do that again." She shuddered again at the thought of what just happened. "Please, not ever again." Her shaky hand reached out and grabbed the water and she took a long drink before picking up the chocolate. Her stomach wasn't in the mood for sweets, but she knew it would help her feel better. She took a few bites and slowly got to her feet.

"Thanks Professor Hirsch, I think I'm all better now." That was one of the biggest lies she had told in some time, but there wasn't any point in having the good ugly cry that she wanted to have in the middle of class. It could wait until she was back to her dorm room.

Emmlayn smiled at Maddie and Patrick "Thanks" she said as she slowly walked over to where the rest of the class was. It was comforting to be around all her classmates and in a well lit area.

After settling in and eating a bit more chocolate, she pulled out her parchment to take notes. The next question was one she was a tiny bit knowledgeable about. Care of Magical Creatures was of interest to her, so she'd spent some extra time studying the different creatures. She raised her hand, arm still a bit achy "Sir, the Hidebehind has the power of invisibility and it's prey of choice is humans." Yuck. The thought of anything wanting to eat a person was gross.

It made Chloe feel bad to know that Professor Hirsch thought he'd upset her. Although, he had upset her, but she wasn't broken or unable to go on. The chocolate was going a long way to fix even her upset. "It's okay, professor. Most classes at Hogwarts are upsetting, to be honest. The world is pretty upsetting." But they survived just fine. "It was more the not knowing than the not seeing. In most circumstances, you at least have a vague idea what you're getting yourself into."

So they were going to talk about the Hidebehind today? It wasn't really a creature that Chloe was familiar with, but that was mostly because the Dark ones interested her less. Dangerous creatures, fluffy ones, scaly ones, legless lump ones... just not Dark ones. "Can't they change their shape to make themselves hide behind nearly any object? Probably where they got their name."

"Oh hidebehind is what you do in games and when you want to hide from someone. You hidebehind something or someone." Yes, that was an easy one, she wasn't sure at first when she started in this class and had all the scary stuff. After the last few lessons she wasn't even sure she wanted to be in the class anymore and was hoping maybe she could drop it, but was told it was a must.

So now Chloe just tried to keep up and do her best not to seem like a scared bird hiding in her nest, maybe she could just hidebehind the next. Her own thoughts making her giggle a little.

They hadn't been able to continue that little exercise cause someone had gone and flipped out. People realized that that wouldn't exactly work in the real world, right? Just saying. Ronan would've liked to have used his patronus to find out what, exactly, had been causing the sounds coming from the room but.....

As for what he would've done differently? Well, he probably would've skipped right ahead to using his patronus, but he was pretty sure that wasn't what Professor Hirsch was looking for. So, he just stayed silent. Well, except for another big sigh when the topic of today's lesson was revealed. Creatures. A subject that he wasn't quite so strong in. What was this, 'Find a Way to Stump Ronan Day'? Needless to say, he stayed silent in response to this one too.

Oh. Honestly, Jessa hadn’t been expecting a follow up question on her comment about the doll. She was aware enough that it had nothing to do with the lesson and would have been perfectly fine with a nod from the Professor before he moved on.

That being said, it was nice to know he was interested.

“Well, in this case, it’s like you just explained with us relying on sight. Jane was charmed specifically to aid with surveillance. She doesn’t necessarily respond to stimulus like Lise would so if that dummy had actually gotten hold of her she wouldn’t struggle, she wouldn’t fight back, she’d have no strength to defend herself. Ideally, I’d like a doll that should this scenario be reproduced, be able to hold their own but the exact how will need more thought.”

The introduction of the day’s dark creature made sense. Hidebehind. She remembered reading about that.

“It’s said to be a direct result of accidental breeding. D’you suppose that neither creature really knew what they were doing or had they been an anamoly, Professor? I can’t imagine a witch or wizard “accidentally” cross breeding anything. It’s rather deliberate.”

Like her ideas of eventually cross breeding to create her own species of dragon.

The smile hadn’t been entirely unexpected. Stasya knew by now pretty much that her own demeanor had an effect on Professor Hirsch’s response to her, so she’d expected that sort of response to her own smile. The thing she hadn’t expected was to hear the word ‘exactly’ in reaction to her answer. Even she hadn’t really thought that was a god answer, but apparently she’d been wrong. Of course, she’d much rather be wrong this way rather than the other way. There was a level of responsibility she felt toward her title as prefect, showing the other Gryffindors how to behave. Technically. There were plenty of things she did that probably weren’t exactly what the others should follow.

The explanation had been interesting, too. Just the fact that a professor felt the need to explain why he’d approached a lesson a certain way, but then, it also didn’t surprise her? Not really. Not deep down, and she accepted the reasoning. If it had been a term or two earlier, maybe not, but she’d gotten better at not completely freezing in situations that made her remember her terror when she’d thought that she and some of her dormies were lost (and injured) in the forest simply because of her determination to find the unicorns.

Although, she’d cast the bluebell flame charm more to make sure she felt calm rather than just for light. In the end. Although she’d keep that to herself unless he asked. Instead, she tackled his introduction of the hidebehind. Because, creature, duh. “Hidebehinds are commonly reported in America, not really around here although maybe that’s more because nobody’s had an experience with one here rather than that they don’t exist in Europe? And witches and wizards are more likely to survive an encounter with one, so magic can probably be used to defeat one.” It was a guess, but it really did make sense. Besides, the appearance stuff had already been mentioned.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Daisy inwardly chastised herself for not being successful in defeating the creature/monster. She was really hoping that she was improving when it came to her defence skills. She looked at Emmalyn and whispered, "Are you okay?"

Hidebehinds? Daisy didn't know much about them that hadn't been answered by her fellow students already but she decided to have a go and raised her hand. "I think they are shape-shifters."

Patrick nodded to Emmalyn. He was glad that she was okay, but he knew exactly how she felt. That had been him when they had a cave in the room his first term. He tried to shake the feeling and get back to the lesson at hand, but it was a bit hard for him to focus.

Shaking his head he cleared all the thoughts about the cave and the other's experiences. Each answer from his classmates made sense and he could easily see that they were onto something. "Do these creates only come out in the dark?" he asked, although he supposed he should really make it a statement. But since he wasn't sure about what a hidebehind actually was he figured he should just keep his mouth shut beyond his question.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

He was paying attention to the professor's words now instead of ignoring him. Had he been the only one who had screamed earlier? He lowered his head again as he looked at his shoes. But as the chocolate was having a positive effect on him, Dorian slowly turned to his normal self. His talk about using all of their senses was being noted in his notebook although he already knew this. He just needed to have something to do.

"A hidebehind is a vicious hybrid creature that can disguise itself behind any object and it also preys on humans. It was accidentally created by a guy named...eh..." Merlin's Beard what was his name again? "I can't remember his name but he was known for the cruel treatment he was using on the creatures he was 'caring' for and i think that because of this the hidebehind turned into this vile creature because it was probably always treated horribly." Blame the human yo

He said all this in a quiet voice and then lowered his hand before going back to looking the other way cause he was still slightly mad.

Hidebehind? She shivered remembering the horror stories her younger brother loved to tell of the beast, "Isn't that the creature that can go invisible and is believed to like to attack humans?" Rather because of being treated in an inhumane way or not, she didn't care, she would happily avoid the creature and never interact with it, "Supposed to be extremely dangerous and hard to defeat?"

No... She didn't like this lesson at all. Please don't tell her the professor had actually brought one to class?

"Professor, a Hidebehind is half demiguise, half ghoul," she answered. She found herself reading ahead in the chapter after she answered because that was CRAZY and really intriguing...like, how did that even HAPPEN? Was there just one? WERE THERE A LOT?

Did Hirsch mind the quick flipping through the textbook that Miss Gladin was doing? Not in the slightest. But it did cause a slightly amused smile to spread across his face.

"Concise and well put," he said, giving her a small nod of his head, "As odd of a combination as it is," And it was weird. Just... weird. "you're completely right. Well done!"

'I'm okay' wasn't something Hirsch was prone to believing. After all, how many times had a student said those words to his face and how many times had they actually been okay? So it was probably with this thought in mind that he didn't move away after her first 'I'm okay'.

Her following words caused that familiar tugging at his chest to come back again. There was a slightly long pause because, well, what was he meant to say to that? It only added onto the guilt that was slowly building up inside of him. Guilt and slight shock because he hadn't anticipated to receive this kind of reaction and yet.... "No... no, of course not. Er," Could he swear again? In German? "I apologise about all of that but the next task is a lot more fun and has nothing to do with the dark." If that made her feel better.

Something he was glad about? That she was at least drinking the water and eating the chocolate. "That's okay," he said, deciding that this was probably the moment he should leave her alone. Besides, Mr Dooley was still with her, right? So, after a swift smile, he got up and made his way back up to the front again...

... just in time to hear an answer from Miss Walsh. "Exactly," he said, giving her a single nod of his head, "That's probably what makes them so deadly: the fact that we can't see them in the first place." Was the first activity starting to make sense now?

'Most classes at Hogwarts are upsetting, to be honest. The world is pretty upsetting.'

That was upsetting. It was true that the girl was in her mid-teens and therefore, starting to see the world for what it really was but this was still an upsetting revelation to hear from one of his students. Probably because it wasn't one he could deny in the first place.

Did he have anything to say to that? No. So he was just going to move onwards. "But if you don't know what you're getting yourself into, there's no way to prepare yourself for it." Mostly mentally, in this case. "That's pretty smart, Miss Kettleburn."

"Not a very creative name, is it?" Just saying. "Yes, they can. They hide themselves behind objects as a way of trying to sneak up on their prey. It's their form of attack and their way of making sure they're not spotted and defeated. Well done!"

This was a sweet answer. Really.

"Oddly enough, that links in very well with the topic and the creature." In a roundabout way. "You're right: the Hidebehind is a creature who does exactly that, just not during games. It hides behind objects and uses its invisibility to attack its prey. That's probably where it gets its name from." Again, not very creative name.

"Well done, Miss McCarthy." Smile.

The Head Boy wasn't usually one who stayed quiet during his class. He had a knack for defensive magic so to see him staying quiet wasn't exactly worrying but it did surprise the Defence Professor. It wasn't a cause for concern, was it? Or was this just angsty teenage hormones kicking in?

Don't answer that.

"So," he started slowly, "what I'm getting from this is that you've charmed multiple dolls to aid with surveillance and respond to stimulus?" And even given them names as well. "That's very impressive, Jessa. If you do produce a doll who manages to fight back, would the doll fight back naturally or would it be copying movements you make? Would you be acting out the defensive strategies yourself without being there?"

Could she tell that he was very curious?

"Interesting question, I have to say. I think it was an anomaly because no one would've expected it to happen and the creatures weren't brought to the United States with the means of being mated." Because that was.... well. He didn't want to think about it. "It's something that just.... happened, which makes you question both creatures habits and mating life." Something he never thought he'd have to say. "Well done!"

"Very clever answer," Did he expect anything less? Not in the slightest. "I'm very glad you've considered a reason behind their 'non-existence' in Europe as well, which is something to keep in mind." Because as much as it was safe to admit that they're American-based creatures, it didn't mean that you should let your guard down when you come across something similar in a forest.

"Magic is probably the best way to defeat one, mostly because you're not limited in the ways you could attack them and don't have to get close to them like Muggles probably have to do." There was also the fact that, as far as he knew, Muggles weren't taught about Hidebehinds. "Well done!" Smile.

Oh, this answer.

This answer caused the man to pause. Again.

"I can see why you'd think that, especially because of the activity at the beginning of the lesson but no. They come out during the daytime as well. I guess it's probably easier for them to attack their prey during the nighttime, especially since we can't see very well in the dark," As that activity just proved. "but no. They can turn invisible so there would be no use to stick to one time of the day." Besides, they were more likely to get more prey during the day.

"Not a bad answer, though, well done."

Maybe it wasn't an angsty teenage hormone day. Thank Merlin.

"That was a very ethical answer, Mr Katharos." Really. "You're very right: the creature was an accidental hybrid between two European creatures that ended up being cruel and vicious because of a direct effect from the person whose care they were under." Because Demiguises and Ghouls weren't harmful creatures, really, but their hybrid child was, which said a lot.

..... Well. He wasn't getting a good vibe from this answer. Not at all.

"That's exactly it. They can turn invisible at will and like to prey on humans. Their invisibility is what makes them so difficult to defeat but, and this is important, there is always a way." Just saying. And it'll be something he'll go more into later on. "But well done. That's a concise and accurate answer about the Hidebehind."

Any more answers?

No? Moving on.

"Well done!" he said, clapping his hands once and turning to the class as a whole, "That was a great set of answers and it's clear that a lot of you have really thought this through." And probably done some extra reading or looked in their textbooks quickly just before answering.

"As many of you have said, the Hidebehind is a hybrid creature. It's the," Sigh. "lovechild of a Demiguise and a ghoul. This happened because of an illegal trader named Phinease Fletcher who tried to import European-based creatures, namely the Demiguise, and set up businesses in the New World, or what we know today as the United States. Unfortunately, a Demiguise escaped and mated with a Ghoul which, I speak for everyone when I say, was very surprising."

Anyways. "The Hidebehinds are currently based in the forests of Massachusetts but they could be anywhere. They can turn invisible, which makes them incredibly adept at hiding. To make this worse, they can actually contort their body into any shape needed to help them hide, especially behind the trees they lurk behind." Creepy. Very creepy. "They are roughly 6'0" in height, have silver hair, are very thin and, well, they prey on humans."

Breathe.

"Because of all of this, they are very difficult to track and you need great skill and perception to identify it. But there has been a case where they've been defeated. In the early 1620s, a Hidebehind captured a young Pukwudgie," They knew what that was, right? "and so, Isolt Satyre managed to chase it away and then went on to defeat it."

Dramatic pause?

"Defensively, I'd say the greatest challenge is trying to defeat something you can't see. So how do you solve the problem? By eliminating the invisibility part. You can't Reverto it but you can throw something at it. Mud, earth, paint, flour, smoke.... anything you have on you or you can conjure up that'll make you see where it is. It's simple but it's effective." Pause. "You could also trust your sense of hearing as well. And, as a last resort, Hidebehinds don't like the smell of alcohol but this presents more problems than it solves so I don't want anyone using alcohol today." Not to mention that they were underage.

"Anyways," he started, glancing down at his watch, "We don't have a lot of time left so let's move onto the main activity." At this, he took out his wand and flicked it towards the two unopened boxes causing them to, well, open up. One box contained a pair of goggles while the other one contained something that looked very much like a water gun.

Confused?

"I want everyone to come up and take a pair of goggles and a water gun. We're going to be having a water fight with a slight twist. You still have to hit as many people as possible but," Dramatic pause.... again. "when you put on the goggles, not only are they going to protect your eyes but they're also going to stop you from seeing anyone else in the room. You'll have to use your other senses to try and track the other people in the room and your sense of aim to hit them accurately." Much more exciting than being stuck in a dark room, wasn't it? "Oh, and by the way, anyone caught cheating and trying to sneak a peek beneath their goggles will be eliminated."

"I'm going to give you half an hour until the class closes. If you don't want to take part, come and stand behind my desk. As for the rest of you.... ready? Set?" Smile.

"GO!"

Did he have to mention constant vigilance?

OOC: ....... *gives out extra cookies to everyone who managed to read all of that holy crap Kita*

ANYWAYS.

It's MAIN ACTIVITY TIME! It's pretty simple: WATER FIGHT! The guns that they use will load itself with water. The goggles will prevent them from seeing anyone else in the room. Use this as an opportunity to interact with each other and play with anyone and everyone! Just have fun and don't RP for anyone else, okay? :3

You're also welcome to work on your own or in teams or whatever. It's completely up to you!

I'm going to give you until the 26th of July at 11:59pm GMT+1 to make as maaaaany posts as you want!

Have fun and nudge me if you need anything!

Thanks, lovelies

Ugh... Could she go back into the room with the mannequin? Why did the professors seem so intent on having her interact with the other students? Josie took a pair of goggles and a water gun and just looked around. Alright, she was probably a sitting duck, but tried to aim and listen for shuffles and do as she was told, not wanting to lose the house points for her by not attempting.

Septimus swallowed as the sounds got louder and seemed to creep closer. He debated trying the lighting spell again but as it hadn’t done very much in the dimly lit hallway, it didn’t seem like it would have any luck in the suffocating darkness of the room he currently resided in. What else could he do besides what was already tried by him and his classmates when they had been freer outside the would-be prison?

But then the shuffling suddenly stopped causing the Ravenclaw to freeze, awaiting what might be happening next. In this case…a door opened in front of him, one that hadn’t been the one he had entered through. That was behind him after he had turned away from it at the sounds with him. And there was brighter light coming from door, that was a relief even as the walls disappeared from around him and the light was allowed to reveal what had been in the dark room with him. A silent dummy and nothing more.

He shook his head and graciously moved out of the room. No one had to ask him twice. “Um…hello Professor.” As for the water and chocolate, Septimus was willing to take that offer as well, taking a glass and a nice bar of dark chocolate before sitting down on a free mat. The Ravenclaw thought on the questions being raised, but he honestly had no answer. Instead sitting quietly and listening as he worked to come down from the weird experience.

And then the lesson moved on and reason for the experiment was explained. He hoped he never really was in a dangerous situation that was too dark to see what he was up against. And a hidebehind? Septimus knew nothing, but it appeared his classmates made up for that. Demiguise and a ghoul. Shiver. The second year couldn’t dwell on it too much as they were moving on to the real activity. A blind water fight. And the option to take part of not.
What did he have to lose.

Water wasn’t nearly as scary as what the dark and dark creatures could evoke. So Septimus retrieved a water gun and goggles and moved off to the side. He then took a deep breath, looked around his surroundings and classmates one last time and braced himself before sliding the goggles down over his eyes.

Cue Blind man’s Bluff---wizard style.

They were seriously going to have a water fight?! THIS WAS AWESOME! Maddie bee-lined to the goggles and water gun area and collected one of each. THIS. WAS. WAR. As she headed back to her little area she'd been in, she heard the professor mention something about not being able to see anybody else in the room. BUT...WHAT?! What was up with the lesson today and not being able to see at all?

Yeah, yeah. She knew why. She just didn't think the game was quite so easy anymore. The third year took a good look around the room to get a feel for where everybody currently was, and then she slipped on her goggles. Whoooa. The professor hadn't been kidding when he said she wouldn't be able to see anybody else. It felt strange, but hey, at least it'd be kind of fun to be hit with water!

Alright. GAME ON.

Nothing wrong over here. Especially once Professor Hirsch started explaining about the Hidebehinds, whom Ronan thought should really hunt down and eat whoever gave them such a dumb name. You know, if they hadn't already. Also, they don't like the smell of alcohol? Interesting.....

He retrieved a pair of goggles and a water gun, took a moment to put a silencing charm on his shoes (which would be the biggest thing to give him away if he hadn't), put the goggles on......and jeez, the professor wasn't kidding! Everything was just a big ol' blur. Not a sensation he enjoyed, at all. Shaking off the feeling enough to think, though, he stood silently until he heard the sound of someone's footsteps and....

*SQUIRT*

Hopefully, he hit whoever it was. However, he wasn't staying to see, moving a foot to the left of where he had been standing, knowing that the stream of water would've given away his position.

Feeling better after the copious amounts of chocolate, Emmalyn quickly took down notes then dashed to the front to grab her goggles. Sure, it was in the dark again, but at least she knew she wouldn't be getting hurt from the water. No danger made it much more fun.

After putting on the goggles and arming herself with the water gun, she started moving slowly towards the group when all of a sudden she was hit with a blast of water. "Whoever that was, you got me." Her ears strained to hear which student was close enough to her to get her wet so quickly, but she was unable to detect any sound.

The silence near her only lasted a moment when another set of steps approached. She whipped around and started shooting towards the steps.

*Squirt* *Squirt* Squirt*

She shot three time, each time moving just a bit to the side to make a wider area of attack.

curly haired prefect - "sometimes I get angry!" - 30/90 - *chicken emoji* - probably @ Disney - I speak dog

Nettie's game plan was simple - put on the goggles and just shoot at everything. Hopefully, she would hit someone and not go crashing in to everything - maybe her quidditch skills had sharpened this past year and would help her with this?!

Grabbing her water gun and her goggles, she grinned to herself as she placed them over her eyes. Instantly, all the people around her vanished - and she suddenly regretted not trying to mentally remember where everyone was before putting them on. Oops. At least she could still see the desks and stuff. The last thing she needed was to go to the hospital wing because she had been stupid and walked into a table.

She was PRETTY sure she had seen someone near her to the left before she'd put on her goggles - so she turned to her left, aimed her gun and started to fire. PHEW PHEW PHEW!

Default Hit by emmalyn and trinetta.
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

Despite being still mad at the Professor for the first activity they had to do, Dorian was actually intrigued by the next activity and he wanted to participate as well. At least now he knew what was coming instead of being thrown in the dark literally in this case. He stood up, straightened his uniform before he walked over to grab a water gun and goggles.

Choosing a green colored water gun, Dorian tested it by squeezing it and when it shot water he smiled. He then picked up the goggles and walked to the other side of the room, taking not of where most of the students were at the moment. Though it would be useless information the moment he put on the goggles.

Once he found a perfect spot, the Ravenclaw pulled the goggles over his head and covered his blue eyes. He was left in the dark again but this time he wasn't scared because he knew what was happening. He had not taken a step or two when he felt water hit his shoulder by who knows who (Trinetta) and not a moment later another hit by (Emmalyn)

Great start....

The teenager turned around with the same spin he had used to punch the dummy earlier but unlike earlier this time it looked far more cooler as he had his water gun at the ready and he started to shoot ......at the wall behind him.

Take that!

She could hear that guns were firing and students were being hit, but she wasn't sure how she was supposed to know if any of her shots had landed on a target. She tried to walk about as silently as possible, but the water gun was making too much noise when it shot to be completely silent.

Deciding that no sound was better for the moment, she stood perfectly still, even half holding her breath so she wouldn't make breathing noise. Her ears strained to pick up the slightest of noise and she allowed her head to slightly track towards the movement she heard. Once she thought she had her target, she spun and started shooting as fast as her finger could pull the trigger.

Maddie could hear other people shuffling around her, but she couldn't, of course, figure out where they were. It was strange, but in a way, she knew it was giving them a good feel of what it was like to be attacked or doing the attacking when you couldn't even get a sense of your surroundings at all. A splash of water darted right past her, forcing the Hufflepuff to get her head fully back into the game.

She turned on her heels and shot a few blasts of water right in the direction the water had originally come from. She had no idea if anybody was still there or not, but it was a chance she was willing to take. In return, she was splashed not once, but twice by...well, somebody (Emmalyn). It was actually kind of fun to have a water gun fight, even if they were probably supposed to try and avoid getting hit!

She positioned her water gun straight and head and shot two blasts of water in front of her.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

Why yes, she could tell she’d peaked the Professor’s curiosity with her musings. This was honestly why she adored the man, he understood curiosity and had a heavy dose of it himself. He genuinely liked making discoveries and didn’t shoot ideas down.

“She’d respond based on a set of predetermined commands.” She offered up. “Kind of like.....algorithms in programming that decide how the program works based on a set of prompts. That way it requires less focus on my part after the initial setting up of the combination of charms that’ll then be linked.” In order to get her subjects working the way she did, she’d had to do a bit of research into the muggle subject. The theoretics of it had proven quite relevant to her own work. “It’s how I’m working towards autonomy for the cats and some amount of pseudo autonomy for Lise.”

Once the doll was instructed on how to work, it would make decisions based on the environment. The cats were showing great promise with this.

And it seemed the activity was starting. As she headed up to collect a pair of goggles, the Ravenclaw found herself wondering how the man would truly know if they cheated. All she’d have to do is begin the charm on her eye again. Jane was already resting in her pocket and could be her eye. But no. She respected him enough to do the activity, even if only half heartedly. Jessa hated physical activity and running around squirting water at each other...wasn’t how she wanted to spend the remainder of the class.

Wand still in its holster, Jessa turned in the new darkness. It didn’t take long for her to feel streams of water jetting at her. Based on direction, she was gonna start walking in the opposite direction and try to find a wall before her brain began interpreting this as a locked room. Listlessly she raised her own water gun sending off some jets of her own but her plan was a solid one.
