 As you continue along the second-floor corridor, you will eventually stumble upon a bust of a medieval wizard who is quietly muttering to himself in Latin. But it is the antechamber near this statue that draw in a lot of students because over the years this spot has been designated as a popular hang-out area. More often than not, those who need a break from schoolwork come here to play an array of indoor wizarding games.
Scattered around this small room are chess boards, decks of Exploding Snap cards, areas for playing Gobstones, and other wizarding games ranging from Snitch Snatcher to Wizard Cracker Pop-It to Wizard Skittles. If none of these games interest you, there is a small table where Runok Ko and Rune Riddle books can be found. Otherwise, you can go check out the suit of armour that stands off to the side -- maybe you will figure out that it is guarding a passage to a secret storeroom -- or, if you feel there's more of the castle for you to explore, take the stairway that leads up to the third floor.

So many floors in Hogwarts. Well, it was afterall, a castle. And the more Quinn explored, the more each floor seemed to radiate secrets. Perhaps it was just her imagination wishing for an abundance of secrets to discover on each floor. Either way, she had the distinct feeling she'd only discover a small fraction of Hogwarts' secrets.
Like this bust muttering endlessly in latin. Was it just a quirk of the school and the world she had been born into, or was his mutterings a key to some secret maybe? Quinn was still far from fluent in latin, and she could only catch the occasional odd word, too disjointed and missing context to piece together.
She sighed and looked around, eyes briefly scanning the arcade. It was surprisingly empty. Normally this was packed with kids, which was one of the reasons she avoided it usually. The other, she was too embarrassed to admit, was she didn't know how to play most of them. Her parents could never be bothered to take the time, and Keesey usually had something to do that prevented playing for long. Quinn had played the occasional game once or twice with Beth and Octavia, but other than that, it was as foreign to her as the telly was.
Today, however, Quinn was alone here, and her curiosity drew her closer. A quick peek before anyone else happened along...
Only, as Quinn entered the antechamber, she realized she wasn't quite as alone as she thought. A house elf she hadn't meet yet, was tidying up. This sort of company Quinn had no issue with. "Sorry, I didn't realize you were tidying up. I won't make a mess, I promise." She smiled warmly at the elf. "I'm Quinn."

Dust dust dust! Now was a great time for cleaning. Nimma loved to see studentsies yes, but better to clean when they were off somewhere else! Nimma would not want to be in the way... there was so much studying for them to do yes. Nimma was dusting where the floor meets the wall when a young voice made her turn around quickly.
"Oh! Miss need not apologize! It is Nimma who says sorry, if Nimma is in Miss' way," Nimma bowed to the young student. "Miss Quinn, Nimma is very happy to meet you!" Nimma paused before asking politely, "Would Miss like the space to herself? Nimma can come back later!" Nimma preferred, of course, to get the area cleaned first, but she would leave it to the young Miss. | |

"No, no. Please don't go. You're not in the way at all." And never would be in Quinn's opinion. And while she often minded the presence of her peers, and even the Professors, both of which she knew she had to live with anyway, she never minded the company of a house elf.
"You never have to worry about being in my way, Nimma. It's a pleasure to meet you." She gave Nimma a smile and then glanced around. It was already near spotless in the antechamber. Nimma should be quite proud of the job she was doing. "I wasn't intending to play any of these," she gestured vaguely to shelves of games. "I don't know how to be perfectly honest. I was actually just looking for secrets and passageways. Do you know if any are around here?"

A deep bow for the young Miss, who was being so kind to Nimma! "Thank you, Miss. Nimma is happy to meet Miss Quinn!" Nimma listened to the young studentsy and nodded. "Nimma has not played these games either, Miss, but other studentsies have much fun with them!" Nimma nodded assuringly. There was never time for house elves to learn these games... well, in Nimma's mind there wasn't. Because there was always cleaning and chores to be done!
Dust dust dust
'Nimma stopped dusting when young Miss asked a question. "Secrets and passages, Miss... Oh, well of course, Miss! Hogwarts is full of them! There used to be more, but not all still stand..." Many had caved in or were in some way impassable. Ah, young Miss was so curious! Most of the first years were this way, yes, Nimma was used to it! Smiling at the curious Ravenclaw, Nimma lowered her voice as if telling a secret. "There are hiding spaces behind tapestries and statues, but the favorite room is the Room of Requirement. Has Miss been inside the special room before?" | |

Quinn curtsied in reply to Nimma's bow; a proper curtsy. She was taught how to rather young for many of the social functions her parents would take her when they needed to the appearance of a happy family. She nodded along about the games, but truly brightened as Nimma began to give her details and hints for the secrets of Hogwarts. "No, not yet. I've been looking though. Quite a bit. My friend Beth thinks she found out the location of the entrance though. It's supposedly across from one of the tapestries on the seventh floor." And if it was, this just lined up with Nimma's hint to check tapestries and statues.
And Quinn rightly planned on following Nimma's hints, but for now...She glanced back at the shelf of games. "Do you want to try one? We can learn together and you can decide which one to play."

Miss did not need to curtsy to Nimma! A beautiful curtsy yes! But she shook her head, and her eyes welled up a bit as she spoke, "Miss Quinn is so kind and polite... but she does not need to curtsy at Nimma!" Oh Miss Quinn was so very friendly! Nimma smiled when the young Miss described where to find the door to the Room of Requirement. "Think of what you need, three times through, and what you need will come to you, Miss!" Nimma was making her own rhymes! Nimma could tell that this was a smart young studentsy, and she was so so happy to help.
Oh? Play one of the games with Miss Quinn? And Nimma choose a game? "Is Miss Quinn sure?" Nimma asked. Her head lowered as she sheepishly answered, "Nimma has always wanted to learn the gobstones game Miss. It has been so popular with the young studentsies, but Nimma was never able to watch long before returning to chores!" Nimma took pride in her work unlike a few other house elves that she knew... Nimma wondered if Miss Quinn would pick a different game to play, but the game didn't matter to Nimma. She was just happy to have met Miss Quinn, who was so kind. | |

"You bowed to me," Quinn pointed out. And in her mind, there was no difference between the two events. Quinn had been returning the gesture to Nimma in the spirit with which it was made. A sign of respect.
She grinned at Nimma and repeated the instructions a few times in a low whisper, before repeating them even more silently in her head. When she was sure she had the method of finding and getting into the Room of Requirement committed to memory. "Thank you kindly, Nimma."
Gobstones? Okay. Quinn nodded to Nimma and turned to the shelves of games, searching for the gobstones set. "Gobstones it is. Ah." There it was. Quinn pulled it down, careful not to cause any of the others on the shelf to fall as she did, and brought it to table. "Do you know how to play at all?" Quinn didn't, but Nimma had mentioned getting a chance to watch a little bit as students played before returning to her work, so she might know how to play already and just never had a chance too. If not, Quinn was sure the game had instructions around to tell them how to play.

Nimma nodded, trying to keep her eyes from welling with tears. "Yes Miss, Nimma bowed. But that is because Nimma is a house elf! Miss Quinn is a witch, not a house elf!" Even with all of her years serving the Headmistress and Hogwarts, Nimma never quite knew how to explain to the respectful wizards and witches that they needn't bow or curtsy to house elves! Nimma was always grateful for the very sweet studentsies, and they had definitely been much more polite in the last few decades!
When Miss Quinn agreed to play Gobstones with her, Nimma couldn't help but smile. Oh how exciting this would be! At the question, Nimma nodded shyly. "Yes Miss, Nimma knows a bit!" She wouldn't claim to be any kind of expert on the game, but she had seen many students play before and was sure she could explain. Remembering as hard as she could, Nimma then frowned as she remembered how the game ends. “Nimma does not like how this game ends for the loser… She recalled seeing something shoot out of the marble to make the losing wizard smell bad. ”But Nimma can fix that!” She waited for Miss Quinn to set the game on the table before getting everything set up. Once the marbles were in the middle, Nimma snapped her fingers over the little pile of shooter marbles before scooting it towards her new friend. "Please pick your main marble Miss!"
