Default Wizarding University

Run by:
Gavin McNally - Experimental Charms Professor (Edinburgh)
Ragnild Westergaard - Theoretical Astronomy Professor (Copenhagen)

The Wizarding University booth is one of the biggest ones and is located at the far end of the Great Hall. In this simply decorated white booth, you’ll find endless information, tips and ideas on how to take the next step after graduation. Numerous brochures on courses, classes and life as a college student are neatly stacked on the table. The two professors running this booth have taken the time out of their normally busy schedule to give the students at Hogwarts the best possible chance of finding the Wizarding University and degree that will fit them best. The Experimental Charms professor Gavin McNally from the Wizarding University of Edinburgh and the Theoretical Astronomy professor Ragnild Westergaard from the Wizarding University of Copenhagen are very knowledgeable and here to answer your questions. So don’t be shy! Step up and take the future into your own hands!

Ragnild Westergaard knew the Hogwarts Job Fair was too good an opportunity to pass up the moment she heard about it. She enjoyed sharing her knowledge with young minds, and a trip to the UK would give her the perfect excuse to visit her sister. The Danish woman smiled as she turned to the other professor staffing the booth (Gavin) with a small smile. "Hello, Professor McNally - I presume?" She said politely. "It's a pleasure to meet you. I'm Ragnild Westergaard."

She took a quick moment to straighten the pamphlets on the table as she waited for students to approach. If there was one thing she couldn't stand, it was disorganization! Finally satisfied with the stacks, she tucked a strand of graying blonde hair behind her ear and adjusted her glasses, looking out at the students as they passed. This was definitely worth leaving Denmark!

For weeks now, Jace had been waiting for this day to come. All his life in Hogwarts, he thought he was going to pursue a career in curse-breaking, but then not too long ago, he found himself torn wondering if it was the right choice...and if training to be an auror would be better in the long run. Of course, he has his professors at his disposal should he seek advice in choosing his lifelong career, and he knew too that they'd be biased. Perhaps the practitioners in the Great Hall will clear things up for him. However, a quick assessment of the place told him otherwise. They'll be biased too.

Instead of going right down to business, Jace found himself up the dais, looking at the brochures spread out before him. He thought he should start from the very basic source of information, and branch out towards the booths that interested him. His mind wandered to his initial plan of going back to Japan to continue his studies, only to be pulled back to reality when he caught sight of the two professors manning the booth. "Konnichiwa," the greeting was not intended to be spoken in his native language, and Jace was quick to correct himself. "Good day, professors." and offered them a bow.

With a slight blushing of the cheeks, Jace continued to leaf through the brochures before him, stopping here and there to read the information. "Hi, would you know if there is a Wizarding University in Japan?" Jace honestly felt stupid asking that, considering that he's from there. Must be the NEWT revision taking up most of his time, instead of researching these things.

Wizarding University was definitely on the forefront of Skylar's brain given that she knew so many people who graduated Hogwarts before who were going. But was it necessary? She had zero idea. Following closely behind Jace, the Captain overheard his question about Wizarding University in Japan.

Probably, but she doubted they had an offering for one of her top contenders for career choices.

"Good day, so uh, going to Wizarding University. What's the advantage? Is it necessary?" She bit her lip, wondering how many questions she was limited to, because she had about a hundred about university. "What's the payoff? Do you make more? Are there sports on campus? Are there scholarships available if you play sports? What's the housing situation like?" Okay, that was enough maybe to start them off, but there was more and someone should probably kick her away from this table. Pronto, before she talked an ear or two off.

HAHAHA YEA RIGHT!! Kye thought as she passed right on by the Magizoology and Herbology booths. She would MAYBE stop by later just to see what they were trying to sell, but she had absolutely NO interest in those fields... or talent. If she was being honest. But no interest, more importantly. Snickering to herself, she looked up to see the WU booth. OooooOooooh..... This was probably what she should be paying the most attention to. She wanted a good job, not just entry level for life. The surest way for her to be where she wanted was to find a good degree at WU. She knew that. Everyone knew that. But which one?!?! She approached the table, and smiled at the professors on the other side of the table. "Hello!" she greeted them. "Are we allowed to take any brochures we would like?" She had already grabbed each kind from the Ministry booth, but there were definitely more options here. Please say yes please say yes. "Is there information on each location too, or primarily the degrees available?" Because that was also an important factor. And OOH yes, she wanted to hear about scholarships.

Arts TRANSPONSTER!

He wasn't going to lie: this was probably going to be one of the most useful days of his Hogwarts years.

Ollie still had no idea what he would like to pursue after he graduated from Hogwarts, and that was starting to worry him. Sure, he was only a fourth year, but he thought that he was getting a bit old already, and he would like to focus on the right OWLs next year.

He got to the Wizarding University booth because that seemed like the logical first stop, even though the booth was all the way at the back of the Great Hall. Ironic, he thought, but it made sense seeing as that was definitely the biggest booth there.

As he approached the two professionals at the booth, he overheard all of the questions asked by the Slytherin Quidditch Captain. Wow, she had a LOT of questions. The boy found it useful and was indeed curious to see what the professors would answer, so he stood there quietly, waiting for whatever they would say. He sent the Ravenclaw guy a friendly smile as he recognised him as being one of Matt's friends, and he looked over at the other Slytherin girl when she spoke up. Her comment made his gaze drift to the brochures and he took one to flip through as he listened to the answers to all of their questions.

Tala waked down the Great Hall at a leisurely pace, her demeanor surprisingly calm for all that was going on in her head. As she approached the table for Wizarding University, she kept at a slight distance in comparison to others who were flocking the table. She didn't do too well with crowds and the number of students gathered round was rather overwhelming to say the least.

Her eyes darted back and forth between the information along the booth and the others who were asking questions. Hopefully once they were all attended to, she could walk over and ask some questions of her own. In the mean time, she chose to remain quiet.

She wished Zorion was here.

Ragnild hadn't been waiting long when the first student (Jace) approached the booth. An eyebrow raised slightly at the greeting, but she wasn't fussed about it. Her sister was the language expert in the family, but she'd attended enough guest lectures in her time to recognize the greeting as Japanese. "Konichiwa," she replied, hoping she hadn't butchered the pronunciation too badly. "As a matter of fact, yes. The largest Japanese wizarding universities are in Tokyo and Osaka, but there are a few smaller community colleges. Is there a particular area of study that interests you?" She'd need that information to help him pick a university.

A girl (Skylar) soon appeared. Ragnild smiled, but before she could return the greeting, she launched into a barrage of questions. This one was certainly curious! Good. Asking questions was the best way to gain knowledge. She took a moment to sort through the girl's questions. "No, wizarding university isn't technically necessary, but it will open up a wider variety of job prospects," she said. "Most positions will pay more for a degree, but even when that's not the case, the experience you gain through university classes will help you in the long run."

Then the subject changed to sports, which, truth be told, was not her area of expertise at all. "Yes." She nodded. "Almost all universities have sports in some form or other. The ones large enough to have their own sports teams will offer athletic scholarships, but even the small community colleges almost always have a student-run club for sports if nothing else."

Ah, housing. Now that was something she knew more about! "University housing is a bit more flexible than what you're used to here at Hogwarts," she said. "You'll have a dorm, or course, with one or two roommates. You'll be assigned a roommate to start, but you get the option to pick a different roommate later on, if you like. The dorms are a little bigger than the ones in boarding school. The exact amenities vary by location, but you can expect beds, a study area, bathroom, and usually a small kitchen area." Did that answer her questions?

Maybe she would be able to offer some information not provided in the pamphlets?

Gavin had approached the idea of attending the Hogwarts Job Fair with mixed feelings. While he loved in help out that kind of thing and normally wouldn’t hesitate, but this current fair involved his daughter. His eldest child, whom he sometimes had trouble considering her a 7th year getting ready to graduate. Would it be awkward for the two of them? Would she welcome the visit? It was all currently up in the air.

SPOILER!!: Professor Ragnild

At least on Cassie’s end. The charms professor was so far taking it in stride. “Yep…that’s me,” he confirmed, “Nice to meet you as well.” Always nice to meet a colleague, especially given the different campuses. “And Gavin is fine.” No need for formalities between fellow professors. It wasn’t like they were subordinates of each other.

And then they were off, the first of the students were coming up to them. “Good day,” Gavin returned, offering a polite smile and a dip of his own head in respect to the bow given him. As for the question, Ragnild answered it with ease as well as directed further conversation. Of course, he was ready if the young man had anything else to add.

A girl was next, one Gavin would peg as likely Ravenclaw and Slytherin if asked. Definitely full of curiosity and questions which was a good thing and not necessarily limited to those two houses. "Hello," he said, greeting her in return. “University can also help you get a better feel for what you might want to do,” he added to his colleague’s answers. “For example, exposing you to subjects that aren’t as studied in focus at Hogwarts Or jobs that involve a combination of various fields.” The other posed questions seemed well covered by Ragnild.

“Hello,” Gavin greeted, returning the smile of the next girl. “Sure, you may,” he answered, echoing his companion’s words. Then politely helping hand over any from his side of the table to make sure she got all that she wanted from the offerings. "And we can probably assist you in either answering or directing you on any answers not covered." He would certainly try his best.

The next two that came anywhere close to their table were on the quitter side, something Gavin himself could sympathize. Merlin knows he was like that while he was growing up, only years of the field and experience as a professor certainly had helped that. “Hello,” he greeted, offering a friendly smile as Ragnild spoke up to ask if they had any questions. Yes…they were there to help.

Maxton didn't have the foggiest idea what he wanted to do after Hogwarts. Actually, it was kind of daunting to think about it, so he just ... didn't. Besides, after this year he still had THREE whole years to figure all of that stuff out so there was no point worrying about it yet.

Still, he decided it might be worthwhile to check out the job fair. Perhaps he'd get some ideas?

Professional Quidditch was totally out of the question, so the fourth year skipped that booth completely. Heh, he didn't even LOOK in that direction. Yes, his dad was Clifford Carden former chaser of the Falmouth Falcons and England national squad... Yes, his sister was Daisy Carden current chaser of the Quiberon Quafflepunchers... But nope. Nope nope nope. Not happening.

And following the footsteps of his Mother didn't seem likely either. Having to deal with blood and gross stuff as a Healer? Not his cup of tea either, thank you.

So Max found himself at the Wizarding University booth... He wasn't looking for anything in particular. He didn't even have any questions to ask. He was just kind of ... hanging around.

Oh, OH! She can talk Japanese? The adult's response earned her a warm smile and another bow from the boy. Well, it is hard to enunciate Japanese words to sound authentic, but she did well in not butchering the greeting so that's good. More than good, actually. Not like a certain fellow Ravenclaw. Hadley Denaker was the worst, and perhaps the only person in Hogwarts who can make the usually calm Jace Reed seethe with anger. The young man nodded at her response. "My brother actually attended a small community college in Setagaya-ku. He opted for a small one since his priority was to play professional Quidditch." he paused looking over to Skylar, whom he knew was into the sport as well. "It may be small, but it helped him get in the Toyohashi Tengu team. So, I guess it's really important to choose the best university or college that will help us fulfil our dream..." And speaking of Quidditch, he ought to return his brother's practice broom when he goes to University. He wouldn't need one in the near future.

The Ravenclaw looked from the woman to the man next to her, and grinned. "Well, I plan to take Curse-Breaking...but I'm also leaning towards being an Auror. Would you know if the Wizarding Universities in Tokyo or Osaka are good enough for these majors? Or...is there a special course specializing in hybrid majors? I'd like to take both if it's possible..." Nothing is impossible to a Reed, especially if it required brain power.

More students came by and the seventh year offered them all a polite grin. He caught sight of Ollie though, and if a Meriwether was in sight, it can only mean that a wild Matt Solo's nearby. His fellow seventh year wouldn't miss this opportunity to torment the Aurors present...

Scarlett wasn't sure that this job fair was going to be any help to her whatsoever. She kept hoping that as soon as she got to university, she would be able to just figure out what she wanted to do after she got her degree - but even that was causing her anxiety. Did she want to double major? Was that the safe thing to do? How many jobs could she get with a Divination degree? Did they even offer it?

Huh. Maybe she would learn a little something. Maybe.

She wandered over to the wizarding university booth (walking past her father at the writing booth on the way, ignoring him as she promised she would) and waited until she could squeeze her way to the front.

"Hello. I plan on going to university in London this fall," she began because Edinburgh wouldn't have her boooo "And I was wondering what Divination related majors you offer?" she asked. She did not want to end up reading tarot cards on the streets like her dad had his first year out of school. Shudder.

To be honest he still has no idea what he want to do after Hogwarts. One thing for sure, he wanted to go to a Wizarding University so that's why he's here to figure things out. Peter made his way towards the University booth. And he's a bit surprise to see the crowd around Wizarding University booth. He grabbed one of the brochures and flipped it through. Hmmm..

"Hi, does University have a sport related subject? Something like sport technology or that kind of stuffs?" Because that's the only subject that he could stand.

A job fair. It honestly didn't sound all that appealing to Cassie but seeing as to how Peter was going to attend she decided to at least check it out. Without a word she moved to take up the empty space beside him, brushing her fingers lightly to his hand to get his attention without interrupting him. She couldn't help the small grin that tugged at her lips hearing Peter ask the people at the booth about sports related jobs. Of course that's why he was here. She could answer the question for him but, Hey, it was their job.

"Think they have something related to Gymnastics or Baking?" she whispered with a quiet giggle. Those were her passion. Specially gymnastics. The further she could take that the better. Blue eyes scanned the area them towards the other booths... none of them really seemed to catch her eye.

Skylar listened to the two professors as they addressed some of her concerns when it came to university. It rather made sense when she considered it more, because she adored learning, which was actually the main issue she was having here. She adored learning SO much that she just couldn't narrow anything down. So wait though, a roommate was required?!

"Do you have to live in the university housing?" It wasn't mandatory, right? Because she was maybe considering alternatives, that she wasn't entirely sure about it, but if she did go through with it then it could change things.

Looking at the male professor now, she smiled warmly as he offered his own insights. "So, um, there's guidance offered too? Like an advisor of sorts, as we have our heads of houses here at Hogwarts, there will be something similar at University to help guide us and offer insights about jobs that combine fields?" Because the combination of fields actually was intriguing to the sixth year and she wanted to know more about that now, which she doubted they could help her with that, but she would be taking brochures and contacting the different universities of their amenities and offerings.

Curse-breaking...and auror. Both admirable goals to strive for. "They would indeed," Gavin answered with a nod, grateful for the prep he gave himself whenever planning for these fairs. "Especially auror, seeing as they work with the Japanese Ministry much like Edinburgh does with the British Ministry to make sure that what's being taught is up to par with the expectations of the Law Enforcement departments their graduates would likely follow into."

Max was still kind of ... loitering around.

It was actually working out okay too because he was able to overhear the questions from the other students and the responses from the professors - he assumed they were professors anyway. He edged a little bit closer and blinked in surprise when one of them addressed him.

Actually, he did have a question.

"Ummm, I was wondering..." The tips of his ears burned pink and he bottled out at the last second. His question was silly anyway. "Can I have a brochure?"

Ragnild smiled as Professor Mc- no, Gavin returned her greeting. She was glad she hadn't mistaken his identity; Merlin, that would've been embarrassing! She was slightly taken aback when he asked her to call him Gavin, though she didn't show it. "Right then, Gavin," she replied. Well, that was going to take some getting used to! She was a Westergaard, after all, and calling him by his first name went against years of etiquette training!

She listened as he took the next round of questions, waiting for an opportunity to add to what he said. So far, he seemed pretty knowledgeable.

Rangild had just finished answering the first round of questions when a boy appeared. She expected questions or at least a greeting, but he was just sort of... standing there. Maybe he was just shy? "Hello," she greeted with a friendly smile. She was going to ask if he had any questions, but her partner beat her to it. then the boy mentioned brochures. "Of course you can," she said, nodding. "Take as many as you want. We have some from several universities around the world and a few on general university life too."

Ragnild could just hear her sister's voice in the back of her mind correcting her Japanese pronunciation, but luckily, it seemed to be good enough for this boy. She returned his smile, inclining her head in response to the bow. She listened intently to his story about his brother who attended a small Japanese college to prepare hi to play quidditch, nodding along in places. Then came another question.

She let her colleague answer first before adding, "Both Tokyo and Osaka have excellent auror programs. Tokyo's program is very fast-paced, while Osaka's offers a more individualized approach. As far as curse-breaking goes, Tokyo's program is particularly rigorous; they partner with the Japanese wizarding banks for in-field training." Then the subject of hybrid majors came up, and she nodded. "That's certainly possible. The auror and curse-breaking programs have similar requirements, so you could do a double major."

Shudder.

Another student appeared, and Ragnild greeted her with a polite nod. "Hello there," she said, smiling slightly as the girl mentioned the wizarding university of London. "Congratulations! London is a great university." Her smiled faded as she learned the girl's intended course of study. Divination was not her area of expertise! She half-expected Gavin to answer, but he was looking at her. Looked like it was up to her...

She thought back to what she knew about Divination programs. "Well, the most popular divination majors tend to be scrying and chartomancy," she said. Well, those were the most popular in Denmark; she imagined it was probably the same in London. "Would you be interested in those areas? Or did you have something else in mind?" Knowing what field she had in mind would help point her to the correct major. In the meantime, she handed her a pamphlet. "Here's some information on the wizarding university of London for you..."

"Hi, does University have a sport related subject? Something like sport technology or that kind of stuffs?" Because that's the only subject that he could stand.

Then came a boy (Peter) asking about sports technology. Ragnild thought Gavin had done a good job explaining on his own; she had nothing to add so she merely nodded along. A girl (Cassie) appeared and whispered something the Danish woman couldn't quite make out, though she was almost sure she'd heard the word "baking" in there somewhere. "I'm sorry, I didn't quite catch that," she said. "Did you say something about baking?" She wanted to make sure she'd heard correctly before offering any information.

Oh? Wait, there was professional Quidditch in Japan? How did she not know this?? She smiled at the older Ravenclaw, whom she recognized mostly because of being Ethan's dormmate and all. "Hmm, but I don't want to go to university to get onto a professional quidditch team. I would want to play on the university team. Do you know if the small college had a team then?"

Ragnild smiled slightly as the girl asked even more questions. This young lady reminded her a bit of herself at that age! She almost laughed when she asked if she had to live in a dorm. She could sympathize; student housing wasn't for everybody! It seemed Gavin already had that question answered as well (if not better) than she could've. Then the subject turned to advisers, and once again, her partner was ahead of the game in answering. She nodded in agreement and added, "Most universities also have student advisers - upperclassmen who assist the incoming freshmen with things like class schedules, dorm assignments, and adjusting to university life."

Well, to be honest, that was a bit odd thinking that Skylar was a Quidditch player in Hogwarts. His older brother Jakub had been the star player of Mahoutokoro and ended up playing professionally almost instantly. His university education was nothing but a back up-- a far cry from what Jace wanted for himself. "Yes they do. Although he said, if he ended up in a major University, getting drafted would've been a lot easier." But that's not the point here, was it? Perhaps it was Jace dropping Skylar a hint to still aim for a good University whether or not she'll pursue to become a professional Quidditch player. "I'm sure they have all sorts of clubs, including Quidditch, just like what we have here in Hogwarts...although theirs would be more challenging?" University seemed harder 100 times anyway.

He can take up two things at once, and get the chance to practice both in a few years time! "I do wonder though if the Japanese Ministry still need Aurors? I mean, Japan is pretty much crime free both in the muggle and wizarding world." he said shrugging, his mind drifting back to the place he calls home. "But I will consider taking it up nonetheless, especially if it's possible to have a degree in curse-breaking too." he said looking from Professor Gavin to Professor Ragnild. "I like the idea of breaking a curse, and then rounding up the person who did the crime." The idea was so grand it sent chills down his spine. "Osaka seems to be good choice so far. I like it better there than in Tokyo to be honest. Less busy and a bit cheaper to live in too." Jace continued, scratching his temple in thought. "Does the University in Osaka offer in-field training abroad? Like in Egypt? Or Greece?" Honestly, he did feel bad about leaving the UK soon, but he wanted to visit his second home during his university years if it will permit him, thus the question.

Ollie was listening to every question made and answer given as they went back and forth between students and the professors on the other side of the table while his eyes scanned all of the fliers in front of him.

He didn't want to narrow it down so soon - he was only a fourth year after all - but he vehemently believed someone should study more in depth and work with what they loved and he loved Transfiguration. Hence he found himself collecting everything to do with the subject before he looked up as the professors asked if he wanted any help. "Um, sure." The Gryffindor said, looking lost for a second as he looked down at all of the information in the numerous brochures on the table. "I like Transfiguration, and might do a degree on it." He said, finally looking up at the two of them. "But I'm open for more ideas. I mean, is there anything else I can study that... you know, would have Transfiguration as the 'main thing'?" Apart from a regular Transfiguration degree, that was.

Cassie's main focus had been to keep Peter company while he went to the different booths and gathered any information he wanted. She hadn't even really considered asking about her own careers that she had in mind. Maybe he was right though. It couldn't at least hurt to ask. "Maybe. I'm more into the Pastry Arts aspect of it all though." If it involved making cookies, cupcakes, brownies or cakes she was all for it.

She smiled as the man told Peter about the Magical Sports Science and Management Field. That sounded...interesting. Giving his hand a squeeze she looked towards the women and smiled softly nodding her head. "I did. I'm a gymnast but I really enjoy baking and according to my friends and family I'm quite good at it."

"Alright. Goodbye, then."

"I'm pretty sure they have culinary degree or something like that if you're interested." Hey. they could even sign up to the same University. But he's pretty sure Cassie already dead set with gymnastic.

Magical Sports Science & Management? That's sound like fun. "What about the application requirements? OWLs and NEWTs wise?" He took the handout from the Professor and read it through. Not many Universities offered that particular degree? Hmm... "How about Edinburgh? Do you have it there?" That's where the man came from right? "Or London?"

Ragnild listened to the exchange between her colleague and the boy (Peter) about Magical Sports Science and Management. Admittedly, her knowledge on the subject was limited. It wasn't a very popular major back in Scandanavia, and it wasn't even offered at the school she taught. The nearest university to hers that offered it was Stockholm. She did have some idea of the requiements, though... mostly because it somewhat coincided with her field. "You'll need an OWL of E or higher and NEWT of A or higher in Charms, Herbology, Potions, and Transfiguration," she said, "and an A or higher on the Astronomy OWL and NEWT - this is to help you with the physics aspect of your studies. It's also helpful, though not strictly required, to have an A or higher in Arithmancy." As for whether or not it was offered at Edinburgh or London, she was going to let Gavin answer that part.

Ragnild was relieved to learn she'd heard this girl (Cassie) correctly. Nice to know her hearing wasn't going after all! She smiled at her, but before she could say anything, she overheard the boy who'd asked about sports science and technology (Peter) mention culinary programs, and she distinctly heard the girl say something about pastry arts. She nodded. "Your friend is right," she said. "Most universities offer a culinary program, or if you're looking for something a bit more intensive, you might consider a school that specializes in culinary arts." She handed the girl a pamphlet for a wizarding culinary institute in London. "There's a program that would teach you to incorporate spells with pastry arts, if that's something that interests you. You could learn to make animal crackers that roar like a lion or trumpet like an elephant, doughnuts that change flavor mid-bite... the possibilities are endless."

In the meantime, however, her eyes lingered back towards the other side of the Hall as she scanned the area to see if Zorion was around.

Instead of finding the Slytherin, Tala lost herself in thought. Her--

Her thoughts quickly interrupted by the University representatives at the booth. Her cheeks flushed pink in embarrassment, as she made momentary eye contact with both of them. "Hello," she returned the man's greeting, taking a few moments to recollect herself before she turned to the woman who had addressed her a few seconds earlier. "I have done some limited research," she admitted, "But the areas of study... Is there anything for architecture? And um, is it possible to choose multiple areas of study?" Her eyes moved from one adult to the other, unsure of where to land, until ultimately she decided upon a spot right between the two of them as a compromise.

Ragnild smiled at the girl (Tala) who was patiently waiting her turn to speak. She listened intently when she finally asked her questions, nodding in places. "Yes and yes," she replied. "You might enjoy Wizarding Building Design. It covers architecture, of course, but also integrates magic. You'd learn how to add spells to your designs for various effects, how to conceal buildings from pyring muggle eyes, how to design unplottable buildings, things like that." She paused a moment before answering the other question. "It's certainly possible, but it's a lot easier to manage when your areas of study have similar requirements. What areas did you have in mind?" Other than architecture, of course.
