Default Muggle Studies Term Long Assignment

When you enter the new room on the first floor and just beside the Entertainment Room, you will not be surprised to see rows of mannequins. There is ample space between these rows as well as the distance between each mannequin so that you can easily manouever among them. They are all striking trendy poses. Seems like they’re ready to be dressed in those creations of yours.

Speaking of your creations. Are you thinking of trying your luck at making an eye catching piece of clothing or two? You needn’t have to worry! There are tables set up with the familiar sewing machines. Of course it needs to be set up. Each table has drawers and within these drawers you’ll find all the necessary materials that you would need: scissors, thimbles, needles, buttons, threaders, pins, threads of various colours among others. There is even a first aid kit should you injure yourself but let’s hope it does not come to that.

There is a large clothes cupboard bracing the wall to the back of the room. Here, you’ll find a variety of textiles of all textures and colours. You’re free to use any of these to make your clothing.

Not sure exactly how to get started? Well, there are quite a bit of books on a bookshelf next to the cupboard, all relating to the topic of the basics of sewing and stitching. In addition, you may use the computers from the Entertainment Room to assist you in researching.

Go ahead! Get started! Most of all, have fun!

Emmalyn stepped into the sewing project room and paused to take in what was before her. Her eyes first danced across the stacks of beautiful fabrics, then found their way over to the rows of mannequins. There were several stations set up around the room and she could feel the creative energy in the air.

Moving forward, she found herself standing in front of a set of two mannequins on the far left side. She knew those were hers to create on. They were just her size and their location would provide a little extra workspace to spread out her fabrics. She picked up two name tags and placed them on her mannequins.

Her next task was to check the fabric to see what was available. She had already found the perfect wedding reception dress pattern and it would be excellent timing since her Aunt Stacy was to be married in June. This project made it so she wouldn’t have to spend any of her broom money on a dress. She would have to remember to thank Professor Stewart later on for helping her broom fund.

The clothes cupboard must have had some sort of spell on it that allowed far more fabric to be inside than appeared. She could almost climb inside the shelves and she kept finding more and more of the most beautiful textiles she had ever seen. Finally, she came across the perfect pale golden patterned silk with black accent flowers stitched upon it. She also found a solid black satin that would work perfectly to trim the dress and add an elegant bow.

After removing the satin bolts from the cupboard, she carried them to her workstation and pulled out her pattern. She wanted to triple check her measurements before making a single cut of the elegant fabric.

Daehyun was ready. He'd been practicing with the sewing machine that still scared him, but at least he could now easily set it up and sew a straight stitch. Progress, yeah?

Having read the announcement for their assignment, he'd come prepared with accessories for the certain outfits he had in mind - not that he actually knew how to make them, but he supposed he'd find instructions in a textbook or another. Surely professor Stewart had some extra materials for them to check?

As he stepped inside the classroom, he nodded with a smile in greeting towards Emmalyn, before dropping his bag on one of the tables in the back. He saw two dummies over there, which he supposed he would dress up, so he wasted no time in writing his name, year, and House on tags that he'd attached to the two dummies. The first outfit that he'd chosen was for a day at the beach - even though he wasn't particularly fond of spending time on the beach, he supposed the outfit would be lighter and wouldn't require that much work and stitching. And he had the accessories in his bag, which he'd moved to put them on the dummy. A straw hat, a pair of small, round sunglasses, and a pair of sandals. Yep, he was going for a dorky look at the beach.

Next, he walked over to the cabinet filled with different materials, and he chose some light, white cotton, another light material for a shirt, white also, and another piece patterned with colourful flowers and leaves. Those would do.

Returning to his workplace, he dropped the materials on the desk, and stared at the sewing machine with a sigh. Now he needed to start setting it up, and hopefully he remembered all the steps that he'd practiced.

With her fabric and pattern at her work station, Emmalyn began to unroll the bolt of the main fabric for her dress. She carefully checked for any snags in the delicate satin, and measured three times to be sure before making her first cut. She then spent some time delicately cutting out the thin paper pattern pieces. Not everyone took the time to be exact with their pattern pieces, knowing they would be cutting again, but she found that a little more time spent at the beginning of the project could greatly reduce frustration towards the end.

She gently folded her satin per pattern instructions, making sure her cuts would follow the bias to reduce fraying. She placed the pattern on her fabric, and pinned the pattern in place, only using pins on the seam allowances to prevent holes in her dress. She grabbed a piece of tailor’s chalk to mark her darts and arrows, then started her search for the sharpest scissors she could find. Sure, a regular pair of fabric scissors would work fine for a standard cotton fabric, but satin needed the sharpest scissors to further help with fraying.

When she finally found a suitable pair, she made her way back to her station. Just as she was about to start cutting, she noticed another boy, a young Gryffindor, sitting at his machine. “Hello.” she greeted, barely taking her eyes off her project. She didn’t want to seem rude, but she was in the sewing zone. Just before she began her first cut, she added “If you need any help setting up, give me a holler.”

Emmalyn spent the better part of an hour cutting out all of her dress pieces. She took each cut with great care, being sure to not stretch the satin or tear the thin pattern pieces. Once she was finally finished, she stepped away to survey her work. The dress was going to take a good deal of time to finish and it was only the first of two outfits for the final project.

Shera felt her feet dragging slightly as she entered the room. She'd spent time revising her notes before she had gone in to work on her assignment so that she wouldn't have to deal with issues in terms of not being able to set up her sewing machine.

That was currently her biggest worry.

She grabbed two of the cards as she walked in, smiling at both Emmalyn and Daehyun. Well, at least it was less awkward because she knew both of them. It wasn't a mental choice to head towards where Daehyun was though. Because then both of the pureblooded kids could suffer together, and probably test Emmalyn's patience and generosity when it came to helping them.

"Hey Daehyun," she greeted happily, dropping her bag to the ground and herself at the sewing machine next to her friend. Before she went on with asking him more questions she decided to quickly write her own information on it before she forgot to.

Now, she turned her attention to Daehyun. He looked just as lost as Shera felt. "Do you know which category you're going to choose yet?" Because Shera was still debating her options.

And trying to put off setting up her sewing machine a little bit longer. She did however pull out the notes that she had taken with all of the steps that they had gone through in the muggle studies class. Couldn't say that she wasn't putting effort in to her lessons....

Daehyun was about to start setting up the sewing machine, when he'd heard Emmalyn offer to help if needed, which was really nice of her. He nodded in agreement, but then noticed the girl was quite in the zone and might not have noticed his movement, so he said, "Will do, thank you!" before turning to narrow his eyes at the machine.

He'd started by putting in the batteries, this time with ease since he'd finally understood the way each of them went in, and connected the foot pedal. As he was positioning the spool of thread onto the spindle on the side of the sewing machine, he noticed Shera joining him at the workbench next to where he had settled his things, and beamed at his friend. "Shera, hi!" He would have waved, but his hands were occupied with running the end of the thread through the loop on top, and finished off by placing the bobbin on the winder before turning to look at Shera.

"Day at the beach for the first outfit," he answered with a nod, proudly showing off his dummy which currently wore the straw hat and the small, round sunglasses. And please take note of the grandpa sandals, too.

His eyes flitting back to the sewing machine, he pressed the power switch, and confidently pressed the foot pedal and watched the bobbin thread itself. He's got this. "What outfit are you going to make?" he asked Shera, as he used the scissors to cut the thread once he was satisfied with the amount of thread he'd bundled up there. Next, he removed the bobbin, and the threaded bobbin was moved onto the holder underneath the scary needle. He did the last adjustments, and once the thread had gone through the eye of the needle, pressed the pedal, and he was done.

... only with the setup. Only then the fun began. He wondered if Shera had any clue about how to do all of... that. The actual cutting of material and on which side to sew.

Shera sighed, slowly moving to start setting up her sewing machine as she listened to Daehyun speaking. According to her notes first step was batteries, although weirdly she was thinking it was connecting the foot pedal. Internally she shrugged, still fumbling with the batteries as she inserted them. She supposed she'd need to do it a few more times before the movement came naturally, but she wasn't as confused as she had been the first time.

"Sounds nice," she commented, as her eyes shifted to what was going to be his outfit. Was that a straw hat? Did muggles actually wear those? Because they looked pretty uncomfortable, but who was Shera to judge? And what were those shoes?

Daehyun probably knew better than she did. At least, she assumed he did because overall she was sure he performed better in classes than she did.

Then her hands moved to fumble in order to get the foot pedal attached to her sewing machine. What was her outfit going to be? "I'm not too sure..." she kind of liked the idea of making a first date outfit. From what she had seen of her muggle born friends "romantic comedies" that looked like it would be fun, a nice mix of formal and casual. But she was a jeans and sweater kind of girl and never wanted to admit to anyone least of all Daehyun that maybe she was gaining a slight interest in female clothes.

Especially considering she met Daehyun while planning to burn the skirt that she had bought as part of her school uniform.

Her fingers kept moving, eyes darting to her notes to make sure that she was doing the steps in the right order as she thought. She'd almost finished setting up her sewing machine before she came up with an answer for him. "Maybe the wedding reception?" because that still gave an option of formal but not too extreme.

She really needed to make a choice. Shera realised that as she looked blankly at her fully set up sewing machine.

That was a good start to this project.

Outfit for a wedding reception?

Daehyun's eyebrows went far up and hid behind his fringe at that, because it was the last thing he'd expected to hear from Shera. Was she going to make a dress? The same Shera who worked on disillusionment charms to make it seem as though she wore skirts instead of pants for her school uniform? That Shera?

He wasn't going to point it out though, there was no way he was doing that. Instead, he muttered a "Give me a moment," before scurrying over to the bookshelf, from which he'd grabbed a couple of books on the fundamentals of sewing and stitching - because he didn't know how to use one of those computing machines, whatever they were called - and also a few magazines on muggle fashion that he'd stumbled upon. Returning to their workbenches, he flipped through a magazine with formal dresses, but his eyes soon widened and he'd handed it to Shera. "Maybe you can find something in here?" He'd be there to- you know- give his approval, or whatever. But he probably wasn't the right person to ask which design looked better.

Instead, he grabbed a book and searched how to make a T-shirt... actually, scratch that, he'd settle for a tank top - less hassle with the sleeves - and started measuring out the pieces of the thin, light cotton he'd picked out, and cut them out. Now moving on to the actual sewing...

Unaware of the breath he was holding in anticipation, he settled the two pieces together underneath the needle of the machine and, once ready, he pressed the pedal and lightly moved down to complete the first stitch. It wasn't perfect, but it was definitely an improvement from his first try with the sewing machine, so he was satisfied with the white tank top he was slowly but steadily stitching together.

Shera knew that he was shocked.

She could read it on his face easily. It almost flustered her. She fought back the blush rising on her cheeks because even she realised it was out of character and she didn't know why she even wanted to bother.

"Well... you know I can't exactly have two outfits consisting of a pair of pants and a sweater, right?" she joked lightly, feeling even more flustered as he had just run away. He was coming back, right? He had said to give him a moment... that usually meant returning. And he wouldn't just abandon his work because she had stated that she was going to be making a dress.... not after she'd forced him onto a broom without him bailing, and managed to force him into the lake without him running away.

And he returned.

"Thank you," she said lightly, trying to immerse herself into the magazine which had a bunch of formal dresses in it. There was no way that she could show her discomfort. Her being uncomfortable in a situation usually made Daehyun just close off as well.

Her eyes fell onto a blue dress and she smiled at it. It looked pretty simple, but it still looked... formal. It was the kind of thing that she could imagine herself willingly wearing to a wedding if she had to. "What do you think about this one?"

"Right," he agreed with Shera's statement, which sounded more like she tried to reassure herself. He was pretty sure professor Stewart wouldn't be bothered by her having two outfits of pants and a blouse, maybe one casual and one formal, but he wasn't going to be the one to point it out to her. Maybe she was beginning to like dresses?

As she browsed through the magazine, Daehyun focused back on sewing the two pieces together into a tank top and on not sewing his fingers in the process. He'd become more at ease with the machine lately, but the constantly ticking needle still unnerved him, so he was still cautious about it. Once done, he flipped the tank top over, since he'd been sewing on the inside as taught in class, and scrutinized it for a while before deeming it... okay. It looked okay. And okay in Daehyun's point of view probably meant horrible in someone else's who had an actual eye for nice clothes, but it would do.

He was flipping through the book again to search for shirt designs - though decided he would continue with the pair of flowery shorts instead, since the shirt seemed too difficult for now - when Shera had asked about his opinion on a dress. His eyes fell on a blue dress, before glancing up at Shera hoping he didn't look like a freak and back at the dress, and then looked up at Shera once again. "The colour would match nicely with your eyes-" his unfiltered mouth said before he'd had the chance to process the words, causing his eyes to widen. Never mind that blue also happened to be his favourite colour. "I-I mean-yeah, it's nice. And it doesn't look too difficult to sew?" Nice comeback. Psh.

Shera smiled at Daehyun's comment. It was nice that he had thought about it, rather than saying something to agree with her without even looking at the dress that she was pointing out. She was confused as to why he suddenly back tracked and went to a generic comment but shrugged it off lightly.

Time to grab her supplies.

She jumped to her feet and headed to grab herself a nice blue fabric. A fabric that would feel comfortable rather than scratchy and also hopefully look nice in itself. Not that she ever imagined that she would wear the dress. Between being to embarrassed to ever be caught wearing it if it turned out nicely, or it just looking terrible because she didn't have much practice sewing, there was a 0% chance.

But she still wanted it to be nice. If just because it was an assignment that she was working on and she wanted to get good grades.

A few minutes later she returned to her sewing machine, and began work, trying to figure out exactly how she was going to be putting the dress together.

Tank top down, many other things left to go.

Leaving the page open in the book where he'd found tips on how to make a pair of shorts, he laid out the colourfully patterned material on the flat surface of the desk, and started making careful measurements that he would later cut. Shera seemed to have settled into her work as well, so they worked in a comfortable silence, until it struck him.

"Do you have any ideas for the second outfit?" he asked, his eyes still focused on cutting out the pieces of material that he'd measured in straight lines. Sure, he could make adjustments as he went, and the edges that he was cutting would be on the inside of the clothes, so it didn't matter that much if they were a bit uneven, but he wanted to try his best for the assignment and earn points to get the House Cup for Gryffindor.

As for his second outfit... he had no idea what to do, though he still had time to think it over while he finished the shorts, and made the shirt he had in mind, too. He'd thought about something formal, but he had a feeling a suit jacket would be a nuisance to make. He needed something simple.

Perhaps there had been a spark of inspiration from her recent use of certain Muggle items, such as pencils and the hat making lesson, but here she was… choosing outfits to make. Kye gazed at the mannequins in their various positions… even they seemed to have sassy attitudes. Hmmm… moving along, she had flashbacks to her stupid crooked seams on her beanie. I wonder if Professor Stewart would mind me using some fabric to practice straight lines… Maybe if I buy the fabric? Kye raised an eyebrow at the options she had, and wondered which would be her strong suit. Some were so vague! A teenager’s birthday party? There were so many kinds of teenagers, so many themes, so many countries, so many options! A wedding reception… well that would give her a pretty outfit to wear, if it was good enough. A funeral? No. She wouldn’t be doing that. Ooh, first date… that could be nice for whenever Kye actually had one . She would need to do some research to figure out which she wanted to do for sure… Of course, she could always start with one and if it started looking more like the other option she could just change it… Did Professor Stewart accept cop outs?

She decided to claim her mannequins, and maybe throw on a few fabrics and come back in a little while once she had decided between wedding reception and first date… She found two that were around her height, filled out her two cards, and attached them to the dummies.

She left these on the side for now while she browsed the available fabrics. She was thinking of solid colors, maybe a little jewel embroidery for the fancy outfit. She decided to grab a few things while she was here: a green charmeuse type, absolutely PERFECT for a blouse in Kye’s opinion, and some denim. Hmmm…

It was time to set up her machine. Before she started, she checked to make sure the needle was sharp and didn’t have any obvious signs of wear. A poorly sharpened needle could easily snag her delicate fabric, rendering her project no more than scrap worthy. She bent down and eyed the straightness, then gently brushed her index finger along the point.

Noticing Shera enter the room, Emmalyn paused in her work. “Hi, Shera.” She greeted. The room was starting to become more populated and the added chaos of others working created a nice atmosphere.

Satisfied with the equipment, she selected a fine quality midnight black thread, loaded the bobbin, then threaded the machine. She sat back a moment to let her fabric finish resting. From past experience, satin needed to rest for a bit after being cut incase it had stretched in the process. She knew the dress had to be perfect, so the extra time was well worth the wait.

Finally, she picked up the first pattern piece and placed it on the machine. But, before she pressed her foot to the pedal, she removed the fabric and placed it back on the table. Something her grandma had said had popped in her mind. The curved seams. She needed to hand-baste them together. It would prevent the slippery satin from moving while being fed through the machine. ‘Thanks Grams’ she silently whispered as she began to thread a needle with black thread. Emmalyn took care in hand-basting all of the curves in the seam allowance.

She took a deep breath and slowly exhaled with her eyes closed. She needed to be sure she wasn’t missing anything else before putting fabric to machine. Opening her eyes, she felt more confident and took a seat to start sewing. She picked up the first piece again, placing it gently on the machine. She was sure to select a nice short stitch length to prevent puckering then gently pressed her foot against the pedal. She hum of the machine was a comforting sound and the tat tat tat sound of the needle going up and down further calmed her nerves. These were sounds she had grown up with. Sounds of home.

Shera had to focus a ridiculous amount as she worked on the dress. Sewing was... difficult? Difficult wasn't really the right word for it. It just required a lot of concentration for her. And clearly, with absolutely no experience she knew that she wasn't doing as well as other people could.

Like Emmalyn. Her muggle born friend who had mentioned that her family had taught her how to sew. So far, Shera was pretty sure she was doing alright and was kinda thankful she didn't need to bother her friend while she was so focussed on her work.

Then Daehyun caught her attention. She stopped working momentarily as she turned towards her friend with a thoughtful look on her face. "I was just thinking some kind of pants with a shirt? I still haven't decided whether or not I'll try using denim for a pair of jeans or whether I'll just go with a pair of fabric pants. And maybe a jacket or something to go with it..."

The jacket was definitely a maybe, she wasn't committing to it in case she managed to somehow ruin the whole thing by accident. That way she could just toss it aside and pretend it had never been part of her plan in the first place. Or, at least Professor Stewart would never know it had been part of her plan. Just Daehyun would know that she had given up. Her hands moved back to keep working on her dress.

"Do you have any ideas yet?"

"Mmm," he hummed thoughtfully at Shera's words, wondering if he should do the same for his second outfit... though it would be awfully similar to the first one, only of different lengths. But maybe professor Stewart didn't mind? "Jackets look scary to make from scratch though," Daehyun added with a nervous laugh.

He focused back on the pair of shorts he was about to finish sewing, which he finally completed by sewing an elastic into the upper hem. Nervous that it would pop open, he pulled a bit on the elastic to see if it resisted under the stretch, and thankfully, it did, so he breathed out in relief and set the shorts aside, on top of the already finished tank top, and moved to start measuring out and cutting the pieces for what he hoped would turn out a light shirt to complete his first outfit.

Deep in thought, he shook his head at Shera's question, still concentrated on cutting the material for the shirt, until his eyes fell on a certain material on the shelves with dozens of materials of all the colours imaginable, and his eyes widened as an idea struck him. "I think I'll go for something traditional," was all that he said, beaming at the girl beside him, before setting to work on the final stitches for the shirt. Oh, and he'd be needing buttons, too.

The dress was taking shape nicely. The longer she stitched, the more confident she became in her skills. Small pieces became the bodice front and back, the larger pieces became the skirt front and back. It was looking more and more like a dress with every step. Soon it would be time to place it on the mannequin.

It was time to start on the satin bow for the front of the dress, shoulder straps, and trim. She unrolled the bold of midnight black satin to measure out her pattern pieces. She would need to be exact on her measurements so one side didn’t end up longer than the other. It would be quite noticeable it that were to happen. She pinned and cut her fabric on the bias, no little fraying pieces sticking out of her bow would be had.

After letting the fabric rest, she took her shoulder straps to the machine first. She would be attaching one side first, then remeasuring to make sure the front of her dress wasn’t too high or too low. The neckline would be the first place eyes would travel if it was off. With the first side of each shoulder strap sewn, she held her dress up to her body to check for length.

Emmaly was pleased with how far her dress had come. She did a little twirl to get the idea of how the dress would flow as she danced. Aunt Stacy would love it on her for sure. Stacy always loved it when the girls would dress up. Letting her dancing daydream fade, she got back to work stitching the shoulder straps in place and starting on the trim.

Default Outfit 1 Post 1

Text Cut: OOC Instructions
* Choose from one of the below categories:
- A sassy but classy Christmas Party
- A teenager’s birthday party
- A wedding reception
- A funeral
- A day at the beach
- A retirement party
- A house warming party
- Meeting your other half’s parents for the first time
- A first date
- First day at University
- Your wedding

* Using the chosen category, your charrie will design an outfit for that category and one that you can wear while on a casual day out. The latter outfit must be one that will allow you to blend in with Muggles.

Night shuffled through her options. A Christmas party outfit sounded fun...a teenager's birthday party, not so much. She didn't know anyone who was getting married any time soon, so that was out (she wanted it to be relevant). She didn't know exactly how far you could go with a funeral outfit, and she didn't want to think about death anyway. A beach day sounded okay, but the material might be harder considering that if she were making a swimsuit, she'd have to use spandex. Night didn't know anyone retiring, and the only person she knew who would be having a housewarming party any time soon was herself, except that her parents didn't really know anyone. She didn't have a boyfriend, nor had she ever been on any dates, so neither of those options were good for her. It was too early to think about college, and doubly so for her own wedding. So, Christmas party outfit it was.

She grabbed a card and wrote her name and information in small, curly letters:
Quote:
Amanda "Night" Dixon
Hufflepuff
First year
and then tied it to a dummy.

Now, for the best part: the materials. Night loved fabrics. For a Christmas Party, she decided, she'd want something warm, but not too warm. Maybe something with a gold and black pattern, to represent Hufflepuff. And--ooh! Could she add lights on it? Not with magic of course, but by sewing them on? And what about sparkles? And she'd need some really cute leggings as well.

Okay, she was getting ahead of herself. But seriously, Night was anticipating having A LOT of fun with this project. She went to the closet and selected a silky gold pattern to start with.

The trim was complete, the zipper painstakingly sewn down the back, and all that was left was to hand stitch the bow in place. She wondered if Professor Stewart had ever sewn a zipper into satin material. It was much harder than she thought it would be, trying to keep the fabric from snagging or puckering was a bit of a nightmare. She had almost decided to do buttons, but the thought of stitching all those little button holes to prevent fraying was far too consuming. It would have taken her the rest of the year to finish and she still had another project to start.

Emmalyn walked over to her first mannequin. It was just the right size, somehow her exact size, and placed the dress over the top. “Wow.” She whispered as her eyes drifted up and down her first creation. It was perfect. As perfect as any eleven year old could make it, and far better than she thought she could do.

She took the satin bow and wrapped it around the waist of the dress, noting in her mind the places she would need to secure the band to stay in just the right spot. Thankfully she had taken the little bit of extra time to make the double layer on the waist band, that way she would be able to stitch the inside layer to the dress and leave the outer layer unmarked.

The final part was tying the bow. She stood back to wrap her mind around how she was going to form the bow, not too big but not too small. Her hands met the silky satin and began to tie. Gently, the satin folded over itself and in the end, the bow was just right.

Looking the finished garment over, she did observe a few spots where her stitching could have been a bit neater, very slight wavers in her lines, but only noticeable up close and if you were looking for them. No, she was very happy with the dress she made.

"That's why I said maybe," she responded to Daehyun without looking up from her work. She was moving slower now, trying to get it right. So far she seemed to be doing alright. But she didn't want to get confident now that she was close to the end.

If she managed to do most of it well, she'd cry if she ruined the end.

"If I can't put together the jacket then I'll just leave it be," she finished her train of thought, biting her lip as she continued her work. She'd gotten absorbed into her thoughts and focus that she hadn't noticed the silence between her and Daehyun. At least, she hadn't noticed until he'd started speaking again.

His words caused her to stop, looking at him with her head tilted to the side. "Traditional?" for some reason the word traditional made her think of wizarding robes. Both of them were, after all, purebloods. But this was for muggle studies and was to fit into muggle society. Did he mean traditional as in Korean?

Daehyun had already continued his work though. So Shera shrugged, turning back to her dress. She was basically done. Now all she needed to do was hem the bottom of the dress and add the zipper to the back...

Those things couldn't be too hard, right?

It was finally time to dress her mannequin and accessorize. She had removed her finished dress to press it and trim off any lingering threads. It was ready to go. She walked over to her first mannequin and gently pulled the dress over the top. It fit just as nicely as it had before. She moved around back and gave the zipper a gentle tug. Thankfully it worked just like it should.

She made a few fluffs to the skirt and bow, then used her fingers to press down any parts that seemed out of place. The dress was made to be worn by a person, her in fact, and the mannequin didn’t have the same body shape as she did. Nonetheless, it looked great.

Emmalyn had brought a black hair bow and a little black purse from her dorm. She placed both on the mannequin. Then, she needed her black flats. She wished she would have brought a pair of heels, but she also knew that the dress would not be worn with heels. She couldn’t run in those pointy ankle breakers, flats were much better. Finally it was all finished. She was excited for about a millisecond before realizing she still had another outfit to make. She was off to the fabric cupboard once more.

Default First outfit DONE!

Once he'd cut all the pieces he needed for a shirt - or, well, what the book said, because he had no idea how to put them all together by himself - Daehyun walked to the cabinet with supplies and searched for some buttons, and he had enough good sense to pick small, white ones, to blend in with his future white shirt. He wasn't completely hopeless.

As he returned to his desk, he started sewing the pieces together and, at Shera's inquisition, he stopped to nod at her. "Mmm. Traditionally Korean," he clarified, getting more and more excited about the idea. "I haven't worn such things in a long time, since I'd pretty much stick out like a sore thumb in England." Which was quite a pity, because he loved wearing hanbok.

The shirt needed a few more finishing touches. His stitches weren't all perfect and straight, but he hoped there was any sign of improvement showing in his work. He flipped through the book that had saved his life to find how to sew the buttons, and he'd surprisingly caught on fast enough, so his last worry was to sew them at equal distances from one another.

He moved to dress the first dummy, and his first outfit was done.

"Tadaaa!" he said, proudly showing off his work to Shera.

... until he couldn't help but snort at his own work.

But never mind that. Onto the second outfit.

The choosing of this outfit was proving to be much harder than she anticipated. Sure, she could just sew a basic cotton dress, or do a skirt and top, but she was looking for more of a challenge. Something that would make the muggles take notice without them realizing what they were looking at.

Then it came to her. She would make a dress, which she would love wearing all summer, but she would also make a jacket to go with it. One with a sequin badger on the back. She would be able to sport her house colors all summer without anyone knowing what it meant. Then, if she ran into any other witches or wizards, they could introduce themselves and she would make even more friends.

She rummaged through the clothes cupboard, hoping to find just the right materials for her project. She needed a lot of sequins as well. Lots of grey, black, and white sequins. The jacket would be made of golden colored denim, a tough fabric to work with, but it would last a lot longer. The dress would be made of a lightweight cotton that would keep her cool in the summer heat.

Not wanting to spend too much time worrying about the dress with so much work to be done on the jacket, she grabbed her denim material and headed to her station. She made note to place an order for the sequins. By the time they arrived, she should be read to start sewing them on.

Shera had finished attaching the zipper to the back of her dress by the time that Daehyun had gotten around to clarifying that he was indeed talking about traditional Korean clothing. She smiled as she spoke, keeping her eyes on her work. It was clear that he was quite excited about it, though she had no clue what traditional Korean clothing looked like.

She couldn't even identify traditional Israeli clothing, the admission of which would make her great grandmother role over in her grave.

Jeans were good.

"Are they still commonly worn in Korea?" because he was saying that he wore them before England... It was an interesting thought. Besides, he might even wear his own creation at some point. Not like standing out at Hogwarts would cause any issues.

Pulling the dress she had created up she looked at it critically for a moment. It wasn't as beautiful as the one in the magazine... but she couldn't complain about how it turned out. It could've been a lot worse.

She moved over to her dummy, attaching the card to it along with dressing it. Taking a step back, she knew that there was something missing... She grabbed a pair of white shoes and a handbag to go along with it.

Done.

She smiled over at Daehyun who had just presented his, lightly clapping her hands at his work.

"Not too bad for two purebloods who didn't know what a sewing machine was too long ago?" she giggled lightly. Time to move on to her casual outfit. That was definitely going to be something ridiculously easy to sew. With the exception of maybe putting effort into a jacket...

She wasn't too sure about that yet though.

"Yep," he answered Shera's question cheerily, the idea of it all making him excited. "During Chu-I mean, harvest day," in his newfound excitement, he might just switch to speaking a language she wouldn't understand. "And other celebrations, like weddings."

Daehyun watched her complete her outfit in absolute awe. Where was the Shera that he knew, the one who wanted to burn skirts and possibly jinx the one who invented them in the first place? Instead, he settled for, "It's really pretty." He was silently wondering if he'd ever get to witness her wearing something like that, but there was no way he was voicing any of those thoughts. Wouldn't want her to become self-conscious about it.

"Right?" he giggled, holding his hand out for a high five. He couldn't help but agree that they'd done a fairly good job, even if neither of them was likely to ever actually wear their own creations. Daehyun was definitely not going to wear that. He suddenly wondered if professor Stewart knew a charm that could fix his stitching into a decent one.

Now, the second outfit. It was his turn to make something formal, and Shera's turn to make something casual, as it seemed, but he would never admit it to her that the traditional costume he was going to make actually had very simple stitches and straight lines. It shouldn't be a problem, and he had a fairly good idea of how to make one by himself - he supposed he wouldn't even find any designs in the books he'd found, and he didn't want to waste time searching through others.

Returning to the shelves stocked with fabrics, he'd chosen a white one, one lilac, and one of a deep burgundy. One of his favourite things about hanbok were the vibrant colours. And it also happened to be simple and comfortable, so all the better.

Once back at his workstation, he'd decided to start with the loose trousers, since they were the most straight-forward to make, and set out to make measurements and draw a thin line over the wrong side of the fabric where he was going to cut the pieces out.
