Default Muggle Studies Term Long Assignment

When you enter the new room on the first floor and just beside the Entertainment Room, you will not be surprised to see rows of mannequins. There is ample space between these rows as well as the distance between each mannequin so that you can easily manouever among them. They are all striking trendy poses. Seems like they’re ready to be dressed in those creations of yours.

Speaking of your creations. Are you thinking of trying your luck at making an eye catching piece of clothing or two? You needn’t have to worry! There are tables set up with the familiar sewing machines. Of course it needs to be set up. Each table has drawers and within these drawers you’ll find all the necessary materials that you would need: scissors, thimbles, needles, buttons, threaders, pins, threads of various colours among others. There is even a first aid kit should you injure yourself but let’s hope it does not come to that.

There is a large clothes cupboard bracing the wall to the back of the room. Here, you’ll find a variety of textiles of all textures and colours. You’re free to use any of these to make your clothing.

Not sure exactly how to get started? Well, there are quite a bit of books on a bookshelf next to the cupboard, all relating to the topic of the basics of sewing and stitching. In addition, you may use the computers from the Entertainment Room to assist you in researching.

Go ahead! Get started! Most of all, have fun!

OOC Information:
Topic: Fashion in the Muggle World

Objective: * For students to be better informed on the appropriate way of how to dress when venturing into the Muggle world.
* For students to express their creativity.

How to complete this assignment:
* Choose from one of the below categories:
- A sassy but classy Christmas Party
- A teenager’s birthday party
- A wedding reception
- A funeral

* Using the chosen category, your charrie will design an outfit for that category and one that you can wear while on a casual day out. The latter outfit must be one that will allow you to blend in with Muggles.

* Your charrie should not use magic to create pieces of clothing for the outfits. Instead they will create your own by hand/ machine.

* They are not limited to the material Kay has in the inventory. Purchasing fabric is allowed.

* Dummies, two for each student. Have them label your their, year and House on two of the many available cards then fasten it to your dummies. These dummies, as you would have already guessed, will be used for them to place their creations upon. Feel free to accessorise. That is, use earrings, watches sunglasses or whatever else is appropriate.

* Required post count: At least 5 posts per outfit. Creating the outfit as well as dressing the dummies will accumulate this.

* Time Span: You will have from February 1st until March 13th at 11:59 PM EST.
UPDATE: March 18th at 11:59 PM EST

* Points Distribution: Creating both outfits will carry a maximum of 20 points. However, this depends on RP quality and creativity.

* Kay and I are open to creations from cultures, backgrounds etc all across the world.

* You may create a graphic of your charrie's clothing that were made. This is optional.

* If you have any questions, feel free to PM, VM or Skype me If you want help from Kay, just put it in the header bit of your post. I’ll be having her drop by at times just for the fun of it.

Default Second Outfit, Post 6 (Completed!)

"Don't sell yourself short," she commented brightly, directed entirely at Daehyun as blue eyes stayed focussed on the buttons that she was currently attaching to the flannel jacket she had been busy creating. Shera was so focussed on her own work, and trying to do it quickly so as to not hold up Daehyun, that she hadn't noticed that he was getting quite flustered.

"Ummm... any of the small scraps in that pile can be binned." she added, waving a hand over in that direction. It probably would've been polite to say please or thank you, but now her focus was more on inconveniencing him the least in terms of time that she was wasting. Politeness could wait.

And the flannel was a go.

She picked up the fabric for her scarf next, realising she would in fact have to hem it instead of just haphazardly draping it around the neck of her mannequin. But at least hemming this fabric should be easy enough.

With that rushed through to completion, including the rushed dressing of her mannequin, she was finally done.

Which was definitely good for her, she smiled brightly at Daehyun before rushing to get through her clean up so that they would finaalllyyyyyy be free from all of this, including their confusion and desperate attempts to do something that they hadn't even thought of before mostly because neither had ever heard of a sewing machine before.

"You good to go?"

SPOILER!!: Professor!
So absorbed she was that it took a minute or two for Kay to actually register that Kye was saying something to her. "I apologise, Ms Atwater. I got caught up with these brilliant designs.'' She went over to the Snake, nodding her head as she did so. ''Of course. While we're at it, I can make one for myself. I think I'll go with jeans.'' Yes, it would be more suitable and professional for... well, the students would find out why they needed to make a casual outfit soon enough.

"You see, jeans are double stitched. Remember how we stitched the beanie during the lesson with a single row of thread down the seams? This time it's best we use two rows since denim is thicker than most fabric. It's basically the same flow after you've taken your measurements. Cut the fabric then begin sewing together. I have some books in the room that go into great details.'' The woman smiled. "I'll get some denim for myself.'' Said denim was already washed since that shrunk it and made sewing easier.[/QUOTE]

"That's okay, Professor," Kye smiled, keeping herself from giggling. She was quite relieved when she saw Professor Kay was willing to demonstrate with the denim. Double stitch? Okay that didn't seem too bad... All she had to do was get a nice straight seam, and then stay parallel to that one. Oh how she wished she had steadier hands. Hopefully it was just nerves with the beanie, maybe I'll be better this time around?

Ah, wonderful! Professor Kay had books (hopefully with pictures/how to's). She almost wished that she had brought extra denim, so that they could get started immediately, but she could still use this time to cut the denim to her measurements. Using her list, she made the appropriate marks on the fabric for the waist, and then had a little debate with herself. The professor was going to make jeans, huh? Did Kye want jeans? Or did she want to stick with her original plan of shorts? Hmmmmmmmm....... Nah, shorts were much cuter with her halter idea.

She marked the denim, as with the shirt's fabric, she gave herself a bit of extra just in case. Maybe she would roll the bottoms? She wasn't sure yet, but she could decide that at the end when was closer to the final product. Thank you, Professor Kay, for the mannequins! Because that made it so much easier than just laying it on the table.

With a deep breath, Kye got her shirt's fabric and turned it inside out, laying it in place to sew. Deeeeep breath, you can do this!

On her way to grab one of the books, she paused. "Hello, Mr Yoon.'' Kay took a look at the fabrics. "That's fine. I'm sure your classmates will find use for them.'' As would she probably. "Are you coming along alright? Do you need help with anything?'' Because she was willing to lend a hand if necessary.

Daehyun shook his head at professor Stewart. "I just finished, actually, thank you," he said, his cheeks flushing the lightest pink, because the last thing he wanted was for professor Stewart to examine his outfits right then, with him present. He knew he still had a lot of practicing to do on using the sewing machine and stitching and all, and being a perfectionist... yep, he wasn't ready to hear critiques on his outfits just yet.

After putting the leftover pieces of fabric back in the cabinet, Daehyun returned to his and Shera's workstations and threw away her scraps, too. When he finally returned, he'd noticed that her second outfit was done, and he couldn't help but grin. "Shera, this is so cool!" Cool was probably not the best word choice - maybe stylish, but it'd been the first thing that came to mind - but all in all, he liked it. And as much as he liked the dress, this one was a lot more - Shera.

Nodding, he said, "Yep! All done." His hand went up for a high five.

Two purebloods who hadn't even known what a sewing machine was had managed to complete two outfits without sewing their fingers off. He could celebrate, right?

Night was slightly annoyed that she had been away from the sewing machines for so long. School had been stressful lately, and she had devoted most of her time to her other classes. That didn't leave a lot of time for working on outfits, and she realized she still had to start her casual one.

She rushed over to the fabric closet and then remembered she'd need another dummy. She quickly scribbled her name on one of the cards, not really paying attention to her handwriting. Even at her worst times, she was at least somewhat readable.

She started with a purple cotton. She loved purple more than anything. It was the perfect material for a T-shirt, and she was already envisioning a design: her dogs.

The cotton was far easier to work with than the silky material had been, and with her experience and practice, Night was done with the shirt in no time. The neck looked slightly scruffy, but other than that she was pleased. She'd get patches of her dogs and sew them on tomorrow. For now, she'd even had time to add a small heart in the corner.

SPOILER!!: Night's Shirt

With a smile, Kay handed the books to Kye. "This should help us.'' Without further ado, she began cutting her denim, measuring carefully as she went. Who wanted too large or too small jeans? She kept an eye on Kye in case she needed help as well as the other students within her line of sight. "That's a good idea, using the mannequins, I mean,'' she told the Snakette. "Don't mind if I steal your idea.'' Kay hung the cut fabrics on her own labelled mannequin. Ah, yes. It was much more organised this way. "Are you a fan of sea turtles, Ms Atwater?'' Kay questioned conversationally

Once the cutting was done, the more technical job of sewing began. Here, she would need the much guidance of the books.

The flush was easily noticed. Kay wondered what was up with the Gryffindor but didn't press him for information. Supposed she made him uncomfortable with that? It was the last thing she wanted so instead, she nodded. "Very well. I'm glad you were so thoughtful in wanting to recycle the materials.''

Night had pictures of Butternut and Rosita, of course, and she decided now would be the perfect time to transfer them into the fabric. Okay, to be honest, she had used a small transfiguration charm to turn the photos into patches, but that was okay, right? Hey, if she wasn't using magic for the project in the classroom, then she wasn't using magic, right?

She sewed Butternut's face onto the shirt first. Ah yes, her favorite photo of the silly little girl, the one with her in the teacup. Perfect. Next, it was time for little Rosita. She wondered if people would ask her about the dogs as she sewed their cute, beautiful, little faces onto the shirt.

SPOILER!!: Night's shirt with dogs

Gaston had heard about Kay's assignment and thought it might be worth a try. It sounded like fun, and if nothing else, it was a way for him to do something for his daughter. The thing was... he had literally no idea where to begin! He could sew with a wand, but he'd never tried it the muggle way. His blue eyes darted around the room, taking in the sewing machines and supplies, and he was strangely reminded of his grandmother. A sudden pang of sadness gripped his heart. If only she were still alive... then he could turn to her for sewing tips.

As it was, he was on his own. He supposed the first thing to do was decide exactly what kind of outfit to make. After looking over the category choices, he decided to go with Day at the Beach. There weren't many choices on the list that lent themselves to a baby girl's outfit, but he thought this would be something Desiree could get some use from. If nothing else, she could wear it when they went to visit his parents over the summer.

He was starting to envision an outfit... a little sundress with matching hat and diaper cover. Now he just needed to find the right fabric. After perusing the clothes cupboard, he eventually found a roll of pretty turquoise fabric with a fish print and a contrasting color for the diaper cover. He set the fabric on a table and gathered scissors, thread, and needles from the drawer. Now it was time for the measurements. He had one of Desiree's outfits to use as a guide, but he had no idea how to make a pattern from it. Patterns were used in sewing... that was right, wasn't it?

Kye would be lying if she said she wasn't side-eyeing Professor Stewart, following her lead with the jeans. Cut them here... and here... Okay, that made sense. Again, she folded it to make them symmetrical, so at least if it was crooked they would be equally crooked, and she could fix them together. That seemed efficient enough... hopefully.

Uhmmm was that...? Yes, it was. Professor Marchand was here, and from the looks of it he was starting up his own outfit?? Kye couldn't help but giggle just a bit. "Hi, Professor!" she called over to him. When the professor mentioned stealing her idea, Kye couldn't help but be a little proud of herself. It WAS a good idea, wasn't it?! She finally finished cutting her denim, and wrapped it around her leg to check her progress. Okay, that was actually probably fine! She checked the books for ideas, and details about the denim, before she did anything major. She made sure to give herself just a bit of extra leg room, and marked where the fabric met. Now she could turn it inside out to do the double seam!

Hm? Sea turtles? "Well, I've been to Hawaii once, and we got to see them from afar... I definitely liked all the cute versions they make of turtles, but I've never seen one like reeeally up close." Because she had been to Hawaii, but never to an aquarium. er parents thought they were too crowded and dirty... How could a place filled with water be dirty??

Once the pants were inside out, she placed them caaaarefully across the sewing machine. She took a seat, and began the end stitch... a quad stitch? She went over the end horizontally one way, then the other, and continued up the pant leg s carefully as she could. NO DISTRACTIONS! Except Professor Stewart if Kye was about to do something terribly wrong, duh.

Kay couldn't help but grin to herself. She was aware that Kye was looking in her direction for a little help and inspiration for the jeans making having noticed the eyes looking at her a few times. There was nothing wrong with that; she was here to offer as much help as she possibly could. Occasionally, she would consult the book to ensure she was going down the right path.

"You have? I've never been there but I hear it's a beautiful place.'' The woman grinned. "I think they're cute especially baby turtles. Like you, I've never seen them up close. In fact, I've only seen them on television. Did you know that there are seven species of seas turtles?''

Since the Snakette was starting on her stitching, Kay observed her. So far, so good! "You're doing an excellent job I must say.''

When she heard Kye call out a greeting she looked up to see one Fenchman. Oh? He was making an outfit for himself? Which category did he choose? Or was he making a casual one for that upcoming activity? She excused herself before approaching him. "Hello, Gaston. Getting along well?'' Kay looked down, noticing the smaller clothing he had. She realised it instantly. "You're making something for Desiree! How wonderful.'' Not to mention cute- a papa making clothing for his daughter.

Scarlett had to admit, she was kind of excited about sewing her own clothes! Granted, she would probably never do this again after leaving school, but for now - she had a few ideas in mind. She had to make one outfit from the list and another outfit could be just casual. She decided to work on the casual outfit first.

Before grabbing fabric or anything like that, she decided to set up her machine. She walked over and picked one up, taking her machine and heading to an open station. Before she set up her machine, she wanted to pick out her fabric. She wanted something BRIGHT but also wanted to change it up form the normal pink that she usually wore. She decided to go with blue and red, with a flashy pattern as well, and picked the appropriate colored threads to go with the fabric she had selected.

She decided to do the top first. She took the reddish, salmon colored thread and popped it on the top of her machine, and then plugged the machine itself into the wall and set up the foot pedal. She took an empty bobbin and looped the thread through the top of the machine and through the bobbin, fastening it on the holder before pushing her foot down slowly and watching as the thread began to fill the bobbin. It was such a pretty, fun salmon color! This outfit was gonna look AWESOME.

Once that was done, she took the thread itself and clipped the bobbin from it, taking the spool and starting to thread it through the machine. Now she had a bobbin, and the thread - she was ready to begin!

Well, after she cut the pieces out from the pattern. Obviously.

Gaston pulled his little black notebook from his jacket pocket and tore out a page to take down measurements. He carefully measured the tiny dress he'd brought as a guide, making notes as he went. He was almost done when he heard someone giggling. His head whipped around,
spilling his dark hair into his eyes, and he saw Miss Atwater. "Hello, Kye," he returned her greeting, smiling sheepishly. He supposed it must be rather odd to see him here!

Not wanting to be a distraction, he turned his attention back to his work. He carefully unrolled the fish print fabric over the table and made very light pencil marks in the areas that corresponded to his measurements. Now what? That was a start, but he would feel more confident if he had a pattern to use.

As if on cue, a familiar voice jerked him out of his thoughts. "Hello, Kaysha," he replied, smiling as he looked back at his colleague, but his expression changed when he heard her question. "Not so well, I'm afraid. I have no idea what I'm doing! I've only ever sewn with a wand..." And even that was only on the rare occasion that he needed to quickly fix a rip in his clothes. "You wouldn't happen to have some paper I could use to make a pattern, would you?"

"No I didn't know that..." she said honestly. Kye wasn't great with creatures, magical or not. "Thank you," Kye said appreciatively before the professor slipped too far away. She kept her concentration and thanked Professor Stewart again in her head for the added assurance.

Keep the line... Keep the line... Keep it straight... Finally, Kye had made it to the end of the pants, finishing it off pretty cleanly. She repeated this for the other side of the leg, staying as steady as she could. Yep, shorts were a good idea. She'd be here FOREVER if she were making long jeans. FOREEVVVVEERRRR.. Because she'd probably mess up and have to start over. Ick. Kye shuddered at the thought! She went along, slowly... carefully... Doing much better than her beanie if she did say so herself. And she did. But not aloud. In case of karma. Did she believe in karma though? Eh, more just didn't want to risk it. NO. STOP IT. CONCENTRATE! She finished the pant and evaluated it. Again, she wanted to make something she could wear for times to come, not just whatever this project was. Why waste?? Okay... all looked well. She continued the line and finished the majority of her pants, she just needed to do the waist and bottom part. Okay so maybe she was halfway done? Anyway, the harder part was done in her opinion. She held the shorts up to the mannequin, making sure they weren't obnoxiously big or small. Nope! It seemed she had done an accurate measurement, which, she would be really disappointed in herself if she had messed up something so simple. She pinned a good portion of the waist section down, making sure she wasn't making her shorts too short for her own comfort, and began sewing. It was a little tricky at first, not knowing where to start the actual line, but she put a little mark where the button would go, and checked the books Professor Stewart had left.

She wish she had been this understanding of the process during that first lesson with the machines! Ah well. At least it would be clear that she was learning. Who would have thought she would be learning how to make her own wardrobe this year? She giggled at the thought of taking her NEWTs and having to make an outfit for the examiner. Luckily there wasn't that much time in an examination for it to be an actual idea! She finished the jeans, put them on her mannequin and decided to take a break. She would come back tomorrow.

The professor grinned. "It's never a bad thing to have too much knowledge.'' She was a huge fan of fun facts and never minded sharing any with those around her. She continued working, focusing as much as she possibly could. At times, she would pause to see how far Kye had gotten and was quite impressed with the way she was handling things. This only encouraged Kay to finish her jeans. "Great job, Ms Atwater. Not at all bad.'' She was finished with her own now and hung hers on the mannequin. "I think that's enough sewing for me today.''

Kay laughed a little. "It seems we're in the same boat. I'm trying to make jeans after a rather a long time and I'm struggling a little. Ms Atwater and I are trying to figure it out, however.'' She was grateful for the student. "I'm sure there are some books that can help you.'' She waved in the direction of the sewing books she had gathered for everyone's benefits. Paper? Yes, she did. Kay made her way to the books section and returned a moment later with a pencil and a few plain sheets of paper. "Let those creative juices flow,'' she encouraged Gaston.

Kye had taken her break and had all the motivation she needed to finally finish this outfit! She would have to see how she felt about starting the other one. She gathered her mannequins and fabric, bringing them back to her station. Oh the happiness of seeing the jeans complete! They sat on the mannequin's hips, with the green charmeuse draped across the shoulders. It hadn't wrinkled, had it?? Slowly, she picked up her fabric, and laid it across the table to cut it. She checked that the marks she had made were still there, and she was quite relieved to se that she didn't have to measure it out again! Not a terribly long time later, she had cut the torso section. The hardest part here of course was cinching it in a bit in the waist to keep it on the fitted side. With a smile, she flipped the fabric, secured it with pins every couple of inches, and began sewing. Honestly, compared to the jeans, this seemed much easier although definitely more delicate. Double stitch across here... carefully back this way... Kye was careful not to stretch the material too thin, as she was afraid of making it get crinkly or wonky once it relaxed again. It couldn't be too lose either though or it would get messed up even worse probably!

There. Kye had completed the stitching around the torso piece, and placed it on the mannequin for assurance that it would fit properly. Once she was satisfied, she measured the leftover fabric, cutting out one long strap at about 3 inches wide. She cut across and laid out the new strip before her. Hmm.... it was a little crooked right there near the end. She had accidentally made that part a little wider than the rest. That's okay, easy enough to fix... and she could always pin it to make sure it looked completely symmetrical. She laid it across the top of her shirt, to make sure it was straight across and wouldn't twist. It was starting to come together! She pinned it to smooth out the sides, sewed it together, and attached the strap to each side of the shirt. And there! A halter! She had done it!! This was a very proud moment if she was being honest... Who knew she would start to enjoy Muggle Studies this much?

She put the finished product on the mannequin, and started thinking about her next outfit...

Laying out the pattern was a bit of a hassle, lining up everything and getting it to fit was a bit of a puzzle. It seemed like every time he moved one piece he would have to move another. It was getting annoying. Now it was time to cut out the pieces. He was thrilled, this would be fun. The pants were relatively easy to cut out. But now he needed to get some fabric for his pockets.

Pressing his finger into his chin, he began to think if he wanted to do the plain pale blue that most jeans came designed with. Or maybe he should do something really bright and bizarre. He picked bright. Cutting out the pockets he looked them over making sure he had enough pieces of everything. A front left, front right, back left, back right, zipper, pocket pieces, and six little pieces for the belt loops.

Gaston gave Kaysha a very appreciative smile as she gave him a pencil and some sheets of paper. "Thank you, Kaysha,"he said, and he couldn't help but chuckle a bit at what she said. "Good to know I'm not the only one! I wouldn't even know where to begin sewing a pair of jeans. Knowing me, I'd probably include an extra leg or something!" He smiled self-deprecatingly, but he was only half joking.

Refocusing on his work, he carefully pinned the paper to the tiny dress he'd brought as a guide and cut around the areas where the pins were. Soon he had a pattern to use. He unrolled the fish print fabric over the table, pinned the paper pattern he'd just made, and carefully cut around it. So far, so good. Now he just had to figure out the sewing machine...

He scrutinized the machine in front of him for a minute. If he could rebuild a car engine, surely he could figure out this contraption! He would be embarrassed if he couldn't... Okay, so it looked like the spool of thread went on that thing at the side and went down. He selected a spool of turquoise thread from the drawer and threaded it through the machine, making sure it didn't tangle. Slowly but surely, he stitched the pieces of the tiny sundress together, taking care to keep his fingers far out of the way.

Eventually he'd produced a decent-looking little dress. The stitching wasn't as straight as it should've been in places, but it would do. Now all he had to do was attach some kind of fastener at the back. He decided to use snaps instead of buttons... easier to get on and off and much easier to attach.
When he'd finished, he looked around the room at the mannequins, but he didn't see one small enough. He could easily shrink one with a quick spell,
but somehow he didn't think Kaysha would approve. He turned to her.
"I don't think any of these will fit..."

Oh! How had she forgotten?? Kye pulled the accessories that she had set aside for her casual outfit out of her bag. She had placed a set of black earrings and a silver bangle in a coin purse, and hung it around the mannequin's hand. They should be safe, right? Okay. OFFICIALLY done with the casual outfit!

Kye went back to the fabric that Professor Stewart had available, and wondered what she would make for her themed outfit. She could stick with her original choice of first date, or she could change it... Well, to be honest, she felt that her casual outfit would be a cute first date outfit. Actually, it fit for a few categories! Hopefully that was okay with the professor... Kye stood staring for only a moment, before deciding that the only thing for her to do was something on a different side of the spectrum. She couldn't very well have two of the same kind of outfit, could she?! Now, she wasn't about to stand there making her own wedding dress, but making a dress to go to a wedding in... Yes, that would do! Okay, so she was definitely making a dress. Something shiny maybe? Something sexy? Although... could she pull an outfit like that? She hadn't tried... maybe now wasn't the time for that kind of experiment...

She needed to decide fabric, color, length, style. SO MUCH TO DO! The relief of being done with her first outfit was still lingering, but the stress of starting from scratch again... Oof. She told herself that this would be easier though. No jeans this time! Okay let's see... What color would be good for a wedding? Obviously no black or white, she'd keep away from green since that was her casual outfit. Kye felt the available fabrics, wondering if she would prefer to buy her own. She decided to take a look at some of the available books first, perusing Muggle wedding things.

"You're welcome.'' Kay laughed. "And we certainly wouldn't be the last. Though I'm sure you're the only who would add an extra leg.'' She was only making a little joke with him. The woman decided to watch him work for a while then indicated to that she would be back in a few minutes to see his progress. She didn't want to hover around to make him nervous or anything like that. Besides, she had her own outfit to get completed and that jeans to perfect...

* * * * * * *

Kay returned after being satisfied that her jeans were passable. She was secretly proud of herself for accomplishing what she had set out to do though she did have some help and inspiration from Kye. "It's beautiful,'' she enthusiastically told the French man. "She'll love it!'' Of course, Desiree was only a baby to realise her daddy had made it for her but when she got older, Kay had no doubt that Desiree would appreciate it. Oh, right. The mannequins.

"I think I can find you a perfect one.'' And with that, she was gone again but this time, she returned with an appropriate sized mannequin which was set down on the table. "Go on. See if fits.''

Kye found herself staring at the fabrics and imagining such a beautiful gown... Not that she was good enough at this to make a stunning gown, but she could maybe fib it out enough to make it LOOK like she was good? What material would be best for that endeavor? She felt the blue-grey tulle and knew that this would be used. It was beautiful! She took the whole thing to her table, unsure of how many layers she could get out of it. Hehehe, NONE FOR YOU, CLASSMATES. Not if she could help it. She took a silky looking grey fabric as well because, as gorgeous as the tulle was, Kye wasn't about to chance the transparency of the material. She laid everything out on her table, deciding her layout. She gathered the tulle to make a few layers, seeing how much she may need for a full skirt. Hmm okay, well she definitely didn't need that many layers on the top half, perhaps she should make the top layer big and add the additional underneath? That made sense, right? So that the top would be a fairly smooth transition from torso to skirt?

Well it made sense to her anyway. She lay the silk underneath, and the layered tulle on top to make sure the colors didn't clash or something. Nope! It was the same grey for both, with the added blue tint on the tulle. Kye felt confident in these choices, hoping that the picture in her head was able to come to fruition. Time for measurements! She took out her notes from the first outfit and laid out the measuring tape. After she had marked out the fabric, she decided she might as well get started. First, the silk, making sure that the base of the dress was all set. As she did before, Kye gave herself a bit of extra space just in case. She would finish this section before even touching the tulle again. Oh! She had forgotten to decide how the neckline and sleeves would be! Hmmm, a one-shoulder sounded possible, but maybe a tube top with a flower??

So this long-term Muggle Studies Assignment? Seemed like just busy work to Skylar Diggory and honestly, just an extension of the first lesson which was mostly why she procrastinated to doing it. Among the fact that she had a growing list of career possibilities on her nightstand, one of the things that was not on there was fashion designer.

Not that she had zero interest in fashion, but she had zero interest in designing fashion. But when she finally did decide to make an appearance next to the Entertainment Room and read the instructions about the two outfits they had to design, she frowned. A casual day out that she could blend with muggles was easy; it was her normal attire in the summers, given she frequently went into Muggle London when visiting Diagon Alley. But choosing which theme category.... She had ideas for most of those.

Even a wedding reception, because she was supposed to be attending her brother's wedding in March, yet for some reason he decided he didn't want to marry Noelle. Or vice versa, honestly, she hadn't a clue except knew that designing an outfit for anything to do with wedding was just saddening. Teenager's birthday party? Um, she was ninety percent sure that her outfit in mind was completely inappropriate for a class assignment, so no. Sassy but classy Christmas Party, which, conveniently also made her think of Noelle and Noah, also no. First date: no, because that made her think of her very first date like two years ago with a certain Brent Westwood, which broke her heart to think of him. Day at the beach, possible, but no, because thinking of summer and it was too cold outside in Scotland to thinking about that just yet. Meeting your other half's parents for the first time? Also no, because she would never get to meet Apollo's mother and that just.... no... Retirement party? No, because that required her to think about careers and she wanted to NOT think about careers for this assignment, please? Same with first day at University, because future stuff, no thank you.

Which left the choice between a funeral and a house warming party. With a small smile, she picked up two cards to fill out; one would be affixed to her casual day dummy, once she designed the outfit. But the other, affixed to her dummy for a funeral. Since she was definitely in the right mentality for that one during this moment in her life. Maybe she should just design an outfit for her own funeral, because RIP Skylar Natasha Diggory.

Kye wrapped the gray silk and flipped it, beginning to pin it according to her measurements. Because this was a dress, it was a little trickier in Kye's opinion. She really had to focus on getting the sizing correct from the top to the bottom. Kye wished the material was a bit more stretchy as it would allow some leeway but that would have been just too easy, huh Professor? Well, then the only solution here of course was to do different sections. Kye decided to take a moment to draw this out. She needed to figure out where exactly the seams were going to be. She didn't want to look like an idiot in her dress even if she never had to wear it outside of this assignment. She flipped through the pages of a book with some dresses in it, trying to get a better idea. She furrowed her brow as she tried to gather details from the photographs. Well, if she messed up, maybe the tulle would be able to cover it? As long as she didn't turn herself into a louffe...

Now that Skylar determined about doing a funeral outfit, it was going to be relatively easy. Black, for sure. But did she want to make pants? A skirt? The easiest thing to do was a skirt, because all she had to do was stitch it around as opposed to adding the pants legs.

Although she kind of wanted leggings to go with the skirt, which meant she still needed to stitch pants legs. Eh, she could do it. First things first, collect some black fabric, which she did effortless, choosing to go with something soft like the black wool. And while she was collecting the black fabric for her mental image of the skirt and top, she may as well get something stretchy like the black spandex to make the leggings.

Measure, measure, measure. Deciding to sew the skirt first, because it would be easier.

The hardest part was going to begin. He figured he might as well start with the easy part sewing the pockets. He pieced them together quickly, considering all he had to do was sew them closed and then he would have to add them to his pants later. Quickly pinning the the front of the leg to the back of the leg he decided doing the zipper now would be smarter than trying to do it last.

Grabbing the zipper he had picked out he pinned it to the fabric and began to stitch it together. It was amazing just how quickly he had all of the steps together and making something he could wear. The fronts and backs were together and the yolk of the waistband was now attached to the fabric. He was getting close, only needed to finish the hem. After a few more stitches he finally looked up and observed those who were in the room. He blinked a few times noticing Skylar. He figured he could ask her what she was making to take a small break before he finally started his shirt to go with his pants.

“Hey Skylar, what are you making?”
he noticed she was measuring a lot. But then again he had measured a lot to.

Quickly pinning the the front of the leg to the back of the leg he decided doing the zipper now would be smarter than trying to do it last.

he noticed she was measuring a lot. But then again he had measured a lot to.
In her haste, Skylar realized she forgot to grab a mannequin, which meant she'd been measuring blindly and going off what might fit her. Which wasn't exactly meant to be the case. Setting aside her skirt fabric momentarily, she went up to select one of the mannequins and returned to her seating area.

When she heard someone address her. One of her reserve players. Smiling over at him, "Hey Patrick. Just designing an outfit for a funeral." The other ones gave her too many feels and she wasn't about to deal with right now. Also, she probably shouldn't mention her earlier thoughts to him. "What about you?"

Eyes back on the mannequin, and Skylar wrapped the black fabric around its would-be waist, pinning it carefully. And then slid it off. Folding it inside out, she stitched the two ends together. And then right outside out again, where the stitch was barely visible. But it was in need of just one thing... It would be difficult to take on and off, so carefully, she ripped the seam just a bit at the top and sewed a small bit extra with a button in the back. Perfect. Skirt done, which she lined up on her mannequin just right. Now time for the shirt and the leggings.

Looking back at his fabric he smiled. It was going to be a pretty cool outfit when he was finally finished with it. He wasn’t so sure with the funeral outfit but he didn’t figure it was his place to ask about it so instead he kept it to himself. “I’m making a pair of jeans and a button up, well a flannel to be exact. It’s something I used to wear a lot back home.” he laughed a bit feeling the pang of missing home less, but still feeling it.

He turned back around to his table and spread out his flannel fabric so he could begin cutting out the fabric of his shirt. It was going to be a time consuming task considering it was going to involve matching the pattern of the fabric. After sewing up each piece quickly to his surprise, he grabbed a needle and thread to start on the buttons.

There were seven on the front, two on the sleeves. In and out, in and out, he continued to bring the thread up and down through the button holes. Trying to not get bored with this portion of his shirt. The rest of the project had been really fun, this not so much.
