The satin wasn't actually as easy to work with as Night had hoped. She had tried to start from the skirt up five times, and she just couldn't get past a bottom layer. Maybe she'd need to change her idea. That was kind of an unhappy thought. She paged listlessly through the sewing magazines Professor Stewart had provided, wondering if there would be any use for the gold satin without her original bright, flamboyant idea. She'd tried and tried, but the fabric just slipped from her fingers, and from the machine.

Maybe, Night thought, she would just have to go with a simpler fabric, and add embellishments with the gold satin later. A thicker, slightly rougher fabric was a good idea, maybe with a satin trim for the skirt.

Night sat there thinking for more than an hour. None of the sewing magazines provided any inspiration whatsoever, and she thought about her greatest personality trait:

When Amanda "Night" Dixon did something she was passionate about, or for a class where she felt a real strong sense of commitment, she never did it halfheartedly. So it was past three in the morning when she finally finished her new design, but she was able to hang the skirt part of the dress on her dummy and finally feel satisfied:

Her sequin order had been placed and she was ready to work more on her outfit. The buttery golden denim was thinner than typical denim used for jeans. It would make a nice jacket that kept the cool summer night breezes out, but not make her too hot. Just the right amount of warmth. She would also be able to wear it into the fall with a long sleeve shirt under.

She needed to rethread her machine with golden thread to match the denim. The black thread from her wedding reception dress would not do. Emmalyn removed the black thread from her machine and placed it in the bin for someone else to use before threading another bobbin. She watched the spinning bobbin as the thread wound around and around, her eyes dancing up and down with the movement.

Once her bobbin was properly placed and her machine rethreaded, she was ready to start sewing. She made quick work of cutting out her pattern pieces and fabric. The denim was far more forgiving than the satin was, making her task far less a struggle. She also didn’t have the worry of fraying like with the satin.

Before she knew it, she was sewing sleeves and panels together. She reinforced all of her seams to give the jacket longevity, plus she liked the look. She also chose buttons for the jacket instead of a zipper. She had already shown Professor Stewart her ability to sew in a zipper properly, sewing buttons was a skill she hadn’t yet demonstrated. The jacket needed five buttonholes and buttons sewn in. Hand stitching buttonholes was the way to go.

"That's really cool! I can't wait to see it when you finish it..." Shera responded excitedly. It was making it even more interesting and exciting to eventually see a final product of what was traditional clothing. Not that clothes that weren't worn anymore weren't cool but... it wasn't as exciting. It wasn't something that you would actually see.

And seeing it was half of the fun, wasn't it?

"Thanks," a huge grin was on her face. Not only had they finished it, but they hadn't done that badly. And he didn't think it was bad, which was also a good start. So she was definitely down for a high five. A giggle escaped her right after their hands had met as she realised what it was that they were celebrating. But it didn't matter because she was still proud of both of their work. And really, at this point it didn't matter to her if anyone else cared or liked them.

Like Daehyun, she began to flick through yet another magazine. This time it took her even less time to work out what she wanted to do and immediately set about to gathering all the materials that she was going to be needing. She was actually excited to see it finished.

And even a little surprised as she thought it might even be something she considered wearing.

Daehyun could only grin when Shera said she was waiting to see his second outfit, because he was beyond excited and curious to see what she thought of the final result. It only served as a motivator to do a good job and not disappoint her - and possibly be a shame to the whole Korean nation by ruining their traditional clothing.

Once he'd finished the measurements and drew over the back of the lilac fabric the outlines of the pieces he would need for the trousers, he took a pair of scissors and started cutting them out, moving slowly along the lines because he had yet to get used to them - he even felt more confident using Diffindo, which he'd only mastered not long ago.

His sewing machine was mostly set up and ready to be used, but he replaced the thread with a colour to match the lilac fabric before starting to work on the stitching. His lips stretched into a small smile as the trousers were slowly coming together, nice and loose and probably a lot more comfortable than the school uniform he was wearing.

As he worked, his eyes would flit every once in a while to Shera, curious to see what she was up to, because she'd already surprised him once, and now he wondered if she would surprise him again.

With the buttonholes and buttons completed, she took her almost finished jacket to the mannequin to see how it looked. She was happy with the length, not too short and not too long. It would hit her at just the right spot. Her sequins hadn’t arrived yet, so she went in search of more material in the clothes cupboard. Her dress needed to be light and comfortable.

Then she found it. A nice light linen that was the perfect shade of black. Not so dark that it looked to fancy, but not so light to be on the grey side. She took the bolt back to her workstation and began to unroll the fabric. The dress was a rather simple pattern, but the design would be the perfect fit under the decorated jacket.

Taking care to cut the pattern neatly first, then laying the pattern pieces atop the fabric, Emmalyn made quick work of the task. Before she knew it, all of the pieces were cut out and ready to be stitched. She removed the golden yellow thread from the machine and rethreaded with the same black she used for her first project. There wasn’t any need to waste the black thread when it would work for her current project.

Her foot pressed the pedal with ease, gently starting the rhythmic whirring of the motor, and the up down up down of the needle. The pieces of fabric glided through the machine with the smoothness of waves on water. She was back in her happy place.

Pants.

She was going to start with pants this time. Which looked relatively straight forward. Maybe she was fooling herself though. A lot of the time when she thought things were going to go decently, they turned out the opposite way when it finally came down to seeing how it went.

Eyes focussed on the black fabric that she was working on she tried to shrug off the feeling that she and Daehyun had awkwardly fallen silent. There was ongoing conversation throughout the making of their first outfits after all... her eyes glanced up at the boy in question. He was hard at work with a multitude of different coloured fabrics. She looked back at her own generic colours. Black, white, red and blue.

It was hopefully going to work as nicely together when she put it together as it had looked in the magazine. But it definitely wouldn't be as wonderfully colourful as Daehyun's.

"I like your colours," she commented softly, before shaking her head and forcing herself to go back to work. It was really reaching for the ongoing comfort of the conversation that the two had before.

Shera really needed to just focus. If she managed to get that done she could focus on the shirt... And then the jacket... the jacket was going to be her real problem....

Thump thump thump went the needle into the black linen fabric. The stitches straight and even. The seam allowance set at a perfect half inch. All was going quite well with her dress. The hum of machine muffled the light chatter of other students working on their projects. Emmalyn wondered if she should be talking to her classmates, but that wasn’t her. She preferred to work alone and without distraction. She focused on her task and strove for perfection.

The final touches of her dress were being made as she machine sewed in the zipper. The gentle gathering of the waist allowed her to better hide the zippers starting point and would give the dress a nice fit around her straight pre-teen waist.

She held the dress up to her body and stood in front of a little mirror. The dark linen brought out the chocolate color of her eyes and made her light skin look even more ivory. Not a sickly pale color, but the color of expensive ivory. The added yellow jacket would only enhance the warmness in her features.

Just as she was about to place her dress on the mannequin, she noticed the little boxes under her work station. Hoping they were the sequins she ordered, she hurried back to check. Her heart pounded with excitement as she opened the boxes to find just what she wanted. The black, grey, and white sequins had arrived at the perfect time.

Emmalyn was so perfect, so artistic in general, and it came as no surprise to Night that she was already halfway done with her second outfit. Meanwhile, Night barely had the base for her dress. She had so many ideas, and almost no ways to realize all of them.

Next was the top. She already had the base as the same golden silk she used for the skirt, but she wanted to sew something on, like those dresses she'd seen at Ross back in Chicago. She figured green was a good color. Very festive, and also...she should add sparkles! Something bright.

Within almost no time, she had gotten the front and the sleeves done, but then there was the matter of attaching them. The first few times she tried, they came off really lopsided, and she had had to rip out the seams and start over. She paged through the sewing magazines with more interest than the previous night, trying to find tips on getting sleeve seams right. Finally, after another two hours and countless attempts, she had the dress and the flowy top, sewn loosely to the chest.

Yes, the sequins had arrived. Now she needed to hand sew them on. Hundreds of little sequins taunted her and her hands ached just thinking about the work that would be needed. She rummaged around to find a thimble, needle threader, and threads in black, white, and grey.

Her drawing was already made on thin pattern paper and cut out to size. She collected her jacket from the mannequin and carried it over to her work area. After attaching the pattern paper to the back of the jacket with pins, she used a ruler to make sure it was in just the right spot. After she started there would be no going back.

The needle was threaded with the black thread and she picked up her first shiny black sequin. It was time to start. She sewed in the first sequin, then added another, and another. Emmalyn used a simple overlap stitch that would allow her to create lines of sequins without any thread showing.

Her next several hours were spent sewing on sequins. Pull up, thread sequin, pull down, pull up, thread sequin, pull down… The time was passing quickly without her realizing and before she knew it, it was time for bed. Emmalyn yawned and placed her jacket on the workstation, then tidied up a bit before heading back to the Hufflepuff dormitory.

Just a couple more inches... one more...

... and the trousers were done!

Moving on to the top part, Daehyun grabbed the white fabric and, again, started measuring out all the pieces he needed, though this was going to be a bit trickier. The sleeves weren't completely straight, instead loose towards the ends, and he also took his sweet time measuring the collar and the small trim he would add to it.

He was drawing the pieces on the wrong side of the fabric before cutting them out, when he'd heard Shera compliment the colours he'd picked. Dipping his head in a silent thank you, he couldn't keep the small smile at bay as he said, "It's something typical for hanbok, the radiant colours." Then his eyes fell on her black fabric. "What are you making there?" Not that it bothered him in any way, and it would be cute, but if she declared she's making something with ruffles and bows, he would check her temperature for fever.

But it was a nice change, what she made for her first outfit, so he was pretty confident that she would make something equally lovely for her second.

Shera listened quietly as he spoke, finishing off the black leggings that she had been working on silently. She nodded her head in acknowledgement of Daehyun's words, before pulling the fabric back and realising that she was still going to need to hem them before she was actually finished with this part of her outfit.

"This will just be a simple pair of pants," comfy, stretchy, movement allowing pants. She smiled at her own internal description of what she was making as she set back to work, determined to finish them as quickly as possible. "I liked this magazine because the shirt and pants are just black and white, but the colour is still brought in... which saves you from needing to wear red pants with a blue shirt."

She giggled lightly at the memory of when she had in fact done that and her mother had been mortified. This was more acceptable, although... she was dreading the denim jacket before she had begun. Scarf she could do without a problem. Scarf would literally just be hemming the fabric to make sure it didn't look like she was cutting corners. She wasn't actually even certain if scarves needed to be hemmed...

Her eyes flitted to Emmalyn for a moment, but then she decided to just not bother the girl who seemed to be absorbed in her work.

At least her pants were done. She temporarily put them to the side, figuring she'd just dress her mannequin all at once.

She was making pants, alright. "I was beginning to worry that I wouldn't need to search for disillusionment charms anymore," he teased her lightly, though he prayed to the greater forces that the smile on his face assured her that it'd only been a joke. He would never forgive himself if she didn't take it as a joke and lost any ounce of confidence that she seemed to be building up.

Scissors in hand, he set out the white fabric over the smooth surface of the desk, and started cutting out the pieces he'd drawn, paying extra attention to the collar and the collar trim he would use, since the parts were small and didn't leave much for adjustments.

He'd begun stitching the pieces together when Shera spoke, so he paused momentarily to look over at the magazine she'd mentioned. "Oh? What are you going to use the blue and red for?" Ravenclaw and Gryffindor colours, now that got him interested.

... not that he wasn't already.

Back at it bright and early, Emmalyn skipped in to the sewing room with a beaming smile. She just knew she would be finishing her project in no time. It was a wonderful feeling to be almost finished before the deadline. That was something she hadn’t been able to do very well in her other classes.

She took at seat at her station, eyes dancing over all of the hand sewing she had completed. The few days off she took to let her hand rest was just what she needed to renew her spirits.

There was only an hour or two worth of work left and she started right away. The sequin sewing was rhythmic and made the morning pass quickly. The only times she needed to pause were when she had to switch colors. Otherwise, it was a repetitive pull, thread, pull over and over again.

Then, it was finished. The last sequin had been applied and the pattern was complete. She tied off the last thread, turned the jacket inside out to trim any long threads, and slowly pulled away the pattern paper.

She shook the jacket to allow any thread trimmings to fall, then walked it over to the mannequin that was already sporting the black linen dress. Once the jacket was on, Emmalyn took a step back to survey her work. She was very happy with the results of all of her hard work. The only thing left was to grab a thin infinity scarf and a pair of black flats.

After placing the accessories on her mannequin, Emmalyn started the task of cleaning up her work area. She collected all of the fabric scraps that were big enough for another project and placed them in the proper place of the clothing cupboard. She then put the small amount of leftover sequins in the far right drawer, next to the beading needles and thimbles. To her, it was the most logical place to put them. Finally, she gathered all of the too small to save scraps and placed them in the fabric recycle bin. Maybe one of the care of magical creatures classes could use them to make bedding for the baby animals.

Her outfits were completed, her work area was cleaned, and her heart was full from the hard work she had accomplished all on her own.

Dress Jacket Back of Jacket

Kay had some free time on her hands. But did it really count as free time when she had purposely took a break from lesson planning so she could observe the students? She stepped into the recently set up Sewing Room. Wonderful! There were kiddos around again and progressing well with their outfits.

"Hello, everyone,'' she called to the room in general. "I must say you're all doing well so far with your creations.'' The woman took her time to pause at individual mannequins. Of course she did not expect perfect sewing at the seams and so forth. Nevertheless she was impressed to see that such hard work was being put in.

Hm. Possibly she could work on an outfit for herself?

Kay mulled over the possibility.

"Are you kidding, I'm already working with Professor Marchand to learn how to cast an illusion spell..." she trailed off lightly, giggling at the memory of her first talk with him. "I told him it was so that I could just wear jeans instead of dress robes for special occasions."

Because that was another added benefit.

No more skirts, no more dress robes. Shera was setting herself up really well if she didn't say so herself. She briefly wondered if she'd get away with casting an illusion spell on the fabric after draping it over the mannequin if she had mastered it already... probably not.

With white fabric in her hands she got to work on a simple, loose fitting, long t-shirt. At least it would be comfortable. She had been so refocussed as she worked on cutting what she needed and beginning to sew she almost hadn't realised Daehyun's renewed interest in her work.

"Huh?" she paused for a moment, before her brain caught up to her and she finally registered the question that he'd asked. "Oh... I think some kind of jacket or flannel... I haven't really decided on which one to use. That or a denim jacket. I think I'll try that first because it looks harder to work with...."

Shrugging her shoulders lightly she went on with her work, determined to have this piece of clothing finished shortly. Before she completely lost hope and/or motivation for this assignment.

At least she had Daehyun to keep her company and work alongside.

Kye was finally feeling ready to return to work on her outfits. After spending more time than ever in the Entertainment Room, she had looked at different Muggle outfits and was ready to try her regular day outfit. This just seemed easier. That was okay right? Kye grabbed her mannequins from the side, relieved that no one had taken them while she was gone. She claimed a table, and laid the fabric out. She eyed it, trying to picture exactly how she wanted to cut it. She wanted to make something that she could potentially actually wear out if she ever needed to. Why wouldn’t she? It wasn’t going to be all wobbly lined, like her beanie. She was going to take her time with this. They had all term; there was no need to rush.

The first thing Kye saw when she looked at the charmeuse was ribbon. She visualized making a little bit of an open area in the back and the top could be tied into a bow! How cute would that be?! All she had to do was make a tube top type thing and connect the strap part. In this case it would probably be easier to sew the straps than to try to cut the fabric into that shape… Yea, she would actually rather use the sewing machine in that case. She lay the green fabric up at the top of her table, and looked to see what she wanted to put on the bottom. There was denim of course, but she was definitely not experienced enough to attempt the classic denim pockets and stuff… Maybe a skirt? Possibly, but that felt like it was a bit too lazy for the assignment. Having a halter top and a skirt, felt a little too much like making two tubes and calling it an outfit… Okay, well she would have to see about the denim then. Oh! There was Professor Stewart… Well, with that timing, Kye felt compelled to ask.

“Professor? I want to make denim jeans or shorts… Would you be able to help me understand the stitching on those?”

The snowflake pattern in the cabinet was perfect. It had big snowflakes with wide spaces to cut around, so she wouldn't have to worry about those in the pattern. The background was a deep blue, which went stunningly with her dress. It was the right material for leggings, and it felt incredibly comfortable. Leggings should be easy, right?

After five attempts, Night was rethinking her original estimate about the ease of this part of the project. She could never get the leg lengths to match up, and the snowflakes were kind of lopsided. The second issue didn't matter as much, but the legs needed to be perfect. Otherwise she'd never be able to go out in public without one leg feeling colder than the other. She was so tempted to use a straightening charm, but she knew she would lose points.

She walked to the back, slightly frustrated, and looked for a sharpie. Once she found one, she used it, along with her favorite meter stick, to mark up the fabric where she needed to cut. So what if she had to do things a little bit more slowly than her classmates? They didn't have the same visual spatial challenges she did.

After another hour and a half, the leggings certainly weren't perfect, but they were wearable. Night smiled at her progress. She loved the dress, and the leggings made things wonderful.

Daehyun's eyebrows lifted slightly when Shera had told him she was already working on illusion spells. "How's that going?" He was a bit surprised that professor Marchand had agreed to teach her an illusion spell without being suspicious as to why an ickle first year would have something to hide, but then again, he'd probably been too excited to see students interested in learning extra stuff.

Focusing back on his task, Daehyun had finished the white top, being extra careful not to mess the collar up, so he'd gotten started on the final piece that would complete his outfit. There wasn't so much work left to do, except the only new things he needed were two strips of the same burgundy fabric he would use.

"Go for flannel?" he offered when Shera seemed unsure of what to do. He quite liked it, and jackets seemed just way too complicated to make.

Once he had all the pieces cut out, he'd started on the last stitches, and finished the top off by manually sewing the two strips of fabric on one side and another. He then started dressing up his second dummy by starting with the trousers, the white top was next, followed by the burgundy one, and he'd finished it off by tying a neat bow in the front.

And he was finally done!

"I think I'm all done here," he said as he turned to Shera. "Want me to wait for you?" He secretly hoped she would say yes, because maybe they could drop by the kitchen for a snack. He had a feeling Shera wouldn't need any convincing on that part.

Night glanced at Daniel, the boy she had met in the charms waiting area. His mannequin looked amazing.

"That's a wonderful outfit, Daniel. I love the colors!" She really did. Well, it was time to get back to her own outfit. She felt incredibly slow compared to her classmates, but she also knew perfection took time.

After trying on the outfit, she realized the skirt was too tight. She'd have to let it out a bit. That was fine, though, and easy enough to do. She had already finished the hard parts.

Within a few minutes, she had changed the skirt from tight and thick to loose and flowy, which was more her style anyway.

Then, it was time to accessorize. After adding a snowflake necklace and a little green headband that she hand-sewed two fake poinsettias onto, night was ready to hit the town. She hoped Hogwarts was holding some sort of Christmas party, because when else would she get to wear all this?

She glanced down at her feet and realized she had no shoes. She chose some really soft, fluffy, light blue fabric and stitched it together to make her favorite fuzzy socks, and then quickly made some fuzzy snowflake boots to go along.

When she tried everything on, it looked and fit perfectly. Night was incredibly excited.

"We're getting there," Shera responded, shrugging her shoulders lightly. "I hope to be able to do it with ease in the next couple of weeks, definitely before the year is out."

Then bye-bye skirts and no one would ever be the wiser.

Her hands moved as she thought about how excited she was about that, finishing off the white shirt and dropping it down on top of the leggings. Daehyun was encouraging the flannel? She nodded thoughtfully, jumping up and grabbing the blue and red fabrics she'd already gotten and headed back to the cupboard. Once she got there she pulled out a different red flannel material and a soft grey material before heading back to her own work.

She quickly set back to work on creating the flannel that she wanted to match with the outfit. She only looked up again when she heard Daehyun speaking. He was done already? Her eyes glanced to the traditional clothing that he had created and smiled brightly, giving him a soft applause.

"It looks really nice!" and it did, she wasn't just saying that to make him feel better. Eyes darting down to her own half done flannel which still needed buttons and then the grey material which would potentially turn into a scarf she shrugged her shoulders lightly. "You can leave if you want to or have other things to do, I don't have that much left."

While she waited for Professor Stewart to have a minute (or a few), Kye started working on the top she had in mind. She had to be careful... she didn't want to waste fabric. She decided to cut a bit bigger than she thought she needed to, so she could take off here and there, until it was perfect. That sounded right. First things first: measure. Kye was able to locate measuring tape fairly quickly, but had to take a second to figure out which side to measure with. She pulled the tape around herself and measured different points, not sure exactly where she was supposed to hold it. She was basically moving it a few inches up or down and measuring. She wrote these down on her parchment, laid the fabric cleanly across the table, and lay the measuring tape across.

With a marker, Kye dotted out an extra inch on each side, to make sure she had more than enough to work with were she to mess up. She grabbed a pair of scissors, making sure they seemed sharp enough. Deep breath... phew... Okay let's do this...

Snip.. snip... snip snip... Kye made sure to go over the marked areas, and did her best to keep a straight line. She cut to the end of the fabric on the first side, and decided to start with about two inch straps. This gave her the chance to choose if she wanted thinner straps, or maybe she could fold it in half so they were stronger? Maybe Professor Stewart could help her decide. Kye folded the fabric in half, to keep it symmetrical. Absolutely genius idea, self!

Okay, time to work out the kinks here... and where to put the seam? On the side probably?

So absorbed she was that it took a minute or two for Kay to actually register that Kye was saying something to her. "I apologise, Ms Atwater. I got caught up with these brilliant designs.'' She went over to the Snake, nodding her head as she did so. ''Of course. While we're at it, I can make one for myself. I think I'll go with jeans.'' Yes, it would be more suitable and professional for... well, the students would find out why they needed to make a casual outfit soon enough.

"You see, jeans are double stitched. Remember how we stitched the beanie during the lesson with a single row of thread down the seams? This time it's best we use two rows since denim is thicker than most fabric. It's basically the same flow after you've taken your measurements. Cut the fabric then begin sewing together. I have some books in the room that go into great details.'' The woman smiled. "I'll get some denim for myself.'' Said denim was already washed since that shrunk it and made sewing easier.

Patrick flipped through the fabric. He needed one outfit for himself to wear on a casual day out with his friends. He figured making a plaid button up and some jeans might be the better option since he knew that he could likely wear them at a later point. The first challenge would be to make the jeans. They could be tricked because of the length and the fit on the thighs and waist. He figured if he was going to make an outfit for class he might as well go all in.

Finding a denim that he liked he felt the weight, finding it acceptable he grabbed it ready to walk back to his table. Laying out the material he began to think about the design he wanted. Levi looking like jeans, having the bright gold stitching everywhere; or did he want to just stitch in a similar color to the jeans. Laying the fabric out he began to lay out the pattern he had drawn up from looking at images on the computer. It wouldn’t be an easy task but he figured it would start to look like a pair of pants shortly.

Upon hearing a vaguely familiar voice, Daehyun flushed at the compliments coming from the Hufflepuff he'd met not long ago. "Thank you," he said with a light bow of his head, ready to argue that he still needed to work on his stitching, but then...

The fabrics, however, he'd sorted into two piles - one of bits and small pieces of scrap that he'd cut out, which didn't look like could be used for anything else, and larger pieces that were still intact, which seemed a pity to throw away. He'd seen professor Stewart just moments earlier, so he turned to her. "Professor? Is it alright if I put these back in the cupboard? I think they can still be used...?"

Kay began working on her jeans, starting with the cut out. She was already aware of her measurements since she was used to buying clothing for herself. Truth be told, she needed some help from the books she had told Kye about earlier. Jeans was the piece of clothing she had only made once before and that was years ago.

On her way to grab one of the books, she paused. "Hello, Mr Yoon.'' Kay took a look at the fabrics. "That's fine. I'm sure your classmates will find use for them.'' As would she probably. "Are you coming along alright? Do you need help with anything?'' Because she was willing to lend a hand if necessary.
