Default CoMC Lesson 1: Gone Batty!

It was a nice and cool October evening, but not cold enough to need a sweater yet. There was a soft glow of light in the sky and the sun had just dipped below the horizon; it was officially twilight. Tristan usually set up his lessons in front of the barn, but this one was set a little further into the forest than usual, but not too far. He had set up in a little clearing just outside of a cave. Nothing that would cause them harm lived here, but he knew a cave may be a little scary for some students.

As usual, there was a semi-circle of hay bales set out for the students, and his trusty blackboard was just to the right of the cave entrance. There was no evidence of what kind of creature they would be working with today. He liked keeping them surprised! To the left of the cave there was a large Adirondack Chair made out of hay bales, and that was where Professor Wayland could be found; sipping his Chai Tea from a mug shaped like a Niffler, waiting patiently for his students to arrive.

OOC: Welcome to the first CoMC Lesson of the term! Though this is our first lesson together, this is not the first CoMC lesson of the year, so please keep that in mind! Please make sure you take a gander at the CoMC Rules while waiting. Class will start in 24 hours. Class has begun please jump in!

The bright side was that quite often Bel's Care of Magical Creatures experience in the United Kingdom was confronting something new and exciting.
"You are very welcome, Bel." Tristan gave the young girl a smile and started his walk about the class again.

Soon, Tristan made his last turn about the semi-circle before heading back to the front and standing in his spot in front of the class. "Alright! Times up!" With a flick of his wand all of the students' parchments flew into the air, rolled up, and flew straight into the basket underneath the blackboard as neat as could possibly be. This was to ensure that no one was able to change their answers as they went over the information.

With another flick of his wand, a light turned on over the blackboard and the descriptions of each bat appeared:

Bat 5: Black eyes, reddish-brown or grey coat, pig-like snout. Tiny! Maybe 1 to 1.5 inches
He noticed that it was growing ever darker, so with another flick of his wand, some twinkle lights that he had set up earlier, turned on in the trees around the circle. It brought enough light that everyone could see better than they had before. He paced for a moment before talking; it helped him to collect his thoughts. When he was ready he stopped dead center in the semi-circle. "Now I am sure most of you didn't know there were magical Bat species. Though I am sure most of you are aware that the non magical Bats are used in many ways in the magical world. From their spleens being used in potions, to being a pet. But only the non-magical are used in those was. The magical species are so rare and hard to find, plus they are pretty dangerous." He paused for a moment to collect his thoughts again.

"Now as most of you know, bats are flying mammals that are native to basically the entire world. They are also nocturnal and/or crepuscular, which means they are most active at Twilight," he gave them all a grin, "or at dusk. I figured Twilight would be more favorable than dusk would be for a lesson." He gave a small wink. "Now most bats eat insects or fruit, except for one line that feeds on something else, which we will talk about in a moment."He paused to make sure everyone was writing down this information in their notes.

He walked over to the floating tree limb that had stopped rotating a few minutes before he started talking. He stood about a foot to the left of the first bat. "The first bat here; yellow eyes, green skin, poisonous. This bat is the Mortis Bat. They are very hostile if awoken during the day, and can be held off by the Knockback jinx, Vermillious, and the Verdimillious charm. They are obviously a magical species." He paused, "The second bat here; Green eyes , pale blue skin, ability Stun. This is a Spectre bat which means it is a ghostly species. When it is disturbed it will attack and can stun. It is also a magical species. The Mortis and Spectre can only be found in Great Britain and many of them live in dark corners of the castle and Knockturn Alley." He paused to take a breath.

"Now the other three are all non-magical. Bat three is a Hematophagous, which means it feeds on blood. It is a Common Vampire Bat. They feed mostly on animal blood, specifically livestock like pigs or cows, but if provoked will bite humans which can be dangerous because this is the species that most likely has rabies. The fourth bat is probably the one you may be most familiar with. They have many names; Megabat, Large Flying Fox, Fruit bat, etc. They are very gentle and only eat fruit, which is why they are the most common pet among Witches and Wizards and can be found at the Magical Menagerie." He paused with a smile, and walked to the opposite end of the tree limb, and gentle picked up the teeny bat.

It was so small that it fit on a single finger from tip to his knuckle. It didn't struggle, in fact it seemed happier on his hand than dangling from the tree limb. "This little one is known as the Bumblebee Bat or the Kitti's hog-nosed bat. It is not only the smallest Bat it is the worlds smallest mammal." He paused to let that sink in. "They can be this reddish-brown color or grey and they only eat insects. Because of their size, they considered vulnerable, which means the possibility of them becoming endangered is immanent. They can only be found in western Thailand and southeast Myanmar." With that being said he gently tucked the little one into a pocket on his chest, and it snuggled up to him right away. It was safer in there anyway.

With a flick of his wand more writing appeared next to the descriptions:

He paused and took a deep breath, "So I have a question for you." He took a moment to collect his thoughts and continued, "How many different Families and species of bats are there in the entire world not counting the two magical species?" He stood in front of the class and waited for the answers to come rolling in.

OOC: Phew! *wipes off sweat* that was a long one! Sorry, but it was a lot of information that needed to be shared! Please be understanding! You have about 24 hours to answer!

Professor Wayland was throwing out a lot of information and Maxton attempted to get as much as he could down on his parchment, his handwriting growing messier and messier towards the bottom of the page. He was pretty sure he'd got down the most important facts.

He didn't know bats were sometimes kept as pets and made a mental note to ask his parents if he could have one. He liked the tiny bat the most but assumed that particular species couldn't be kept as a pet if it was endangered. Bummer.

"There's probably thousands of species,"
Max answered the professor's question with a hand raised. "In fact, I bet there's thousands that haven't even been discovered yet."

Harriet just blinked as the professor talked. That was a lot of information. Some of it she had already gathered from there little activity. But woah. That was a lot of information. She tried to make some notes, surrounding the notes she had already made. But it kind of ended up looking a bit of a mess. Opps. She frowned a little, and then started to write on another piece of parchment. She wouldn't be able to use these notes to study from if she couldn't even read them. So the new parchment was good. The blonde then just listened to the professor. She still didn't know if she liked bats all that much. But it was okay. Oh. How many species? Honestly. She had no clue. And she wasn't sure if she really needed to know. She didn't exactly think knowing was going to impact her adult life greatly. She was hoping after todays lesson that she wouldn't have to go near bats again.

But the girl was going to try and give a decent answer. She though, and then raised her hand into the air. "I agree with Maxton" The blonde mused with a smile. She was kind of guessing. "Or at least. There are a lot. We've only talked about 5, but if we are talking about magical and non-magical there must be a lot. Also considering that bats are flying creatures, like birds, and insects, which have a lot of species, it would make sense that bats also have many species" Or at least. She hoped so, or her answer was total rubbish.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

Why was it that whenever she asked to borrow something from the lesson, the answer was always no? What was the point teaching her about these creatures if she'd never been able to interrogate them in the way she learned best? "Fine." She conceded, not nearly as disappointed as she would usually be in light of how distracted she still was. Perhaps later when she was safely back in the castle she'd properly lament the missed opportunity.

But really, HOW could the Professor be talking about bats at a time like this???

Sure, there was no denying the way her eyes seemed to gain a little light at the descriptions of the first two bats--naturally, they were intriguing afterall--but by the time he got to the mundane ones, Jessa's gaze had gone back to the cave.

Funny how much darker and more confined the inside looked with these new lights being introduced to illuminate the surroundings.

"Yeah...what they said." She mumbled, unsure her response would even be audible but there were more important things to worry about besides being heard in a lesson or not. With so many others being available to offer up responses, hers wasn't really needed anyway. In fact her presence in this lesson wasn't needed.

Zarina was in awe about the different type of bats. Well least she got the non magical aspect right but knowing the exact species, yeah she would have never gotten that. She snorted to herself. She was looking at the different bats closely and the professor noting their eye color and fur color and all the fun stuff. She wished she could touch them but then again she didn't want to become a vampire, not that it will happen or could it possibly? Imagine going home to your home after this term and be like, hey mom what's up I am a vampire.

She chuckled to herself and now the professor was asking a question. Alright Zae get it together. She heard the last part asking how many species did the world have of bats? How was she supposed to know. She shrugged and went with the dudes answer. Possibly thousands. She had no clue. Zae said what was on her mind, "I mean if you had like a bat encyclopedia to lend I could possibly tell you.." She couldn't help but say it. She wasn't a creature genius.

Nathan almost dozes off when the professor explained more about the bats. He yawned as he corrected his notes again. He didn't indicate if they were magical or non-magical in his answers. He thought it wasn't necessary. Oh well...atleast he got some of them right. Now for the next question. Nathan had no idea how many species there are, he assumed there were many. They were so hard to catch in the wild, how could researchers possibly document them all?

Bats...maybe he should have a few as pets one day.

Did he just say those dangerous bats were found... in the castle?! Like, as in, Hogwarts Castle? Shouldn't the caretaker be doing something about that? Because that sounded like something you just generally shouldn't have in a school.

And now he was confused. Fruit bat? He specifically remembered thinking it couldn't be a fruit bat because the eye color wasn't right. So instead of thinking about the professor's question, he took to flipping back to that page in the textbook. Yes, right there: fruit bats had green eyes. So did that mean the textbook was wrong? He had definitely seen brown eyes on that bat when he got up to look at them. Wow. The textbook was wrong. This Ravenclaw's world had just been rocked a little bit.

How many families of bats were there? A LOT. That bat reserve near where one of their hotels were had at least 10 different types of bats, and apparently they were all the fruit and insect eating variety. Havent even considered the blood-sucking kind.

But given that his mother is a Creatures maven he should at least come up with some decent answer. Flipping the textbook open he realized how right he was.. and these names good grief, talk about tongue twisters "Professor, there are 18 Families of bats split into two sub-orders, 6 of them belong to Yinpterochiroptera-- where our 4th and 5th bat belongs to, and Yangochiroptera, where the 3rd bat belongs to."

And thats enough twisters for him for the day good sir.

How many different families and species of bats are there in the entire world not counting the two magical species?

Vi blinked. Uhhhh... She had absolutely no clue how many families or species of bats there were. Olivia paused. Well they had just discussed five different types of bats in that mini-activity, but.... Weren't bats the second largest order of mammals? So it must have been more than fifty for sure. And besides, there were fruit eating bats and then insect eating bats too.... Perhaps a thousand or so?

She remained quiet and waited, listening to the other student's offer up answers. "I'm in the thousands camp," she said with a nod. Probably was about a thousand or so species of bats....

That was a lot of information all at once. Emmalyn jotted down everything as fast as her little had could write, and she was quite thankful that the professor had most of it listed on the board. It as the first time she had ever seen most of the bats in front of her, so she figured that maybe there weren't’ quite so many different kinds.

Even knowing she wouldn’t find the answer in her textbook, she picked it up and started flipping through the pages, hoping that she would be able to find the answer. After searching the table of contents, followed by the index, and flipping at random, she gave up and tossed out her best guess.

“Well, for family, there would be a mom and a dad, yes? Then their kids. Do they need to be the same kind of bat to be in a family together?” I guess there would be a lot of bat families all over the world. Like thousands. She wasn’t sure if different bats were friendly with each other or not. If they were, then that would probably mean more families. Then she answered what she thought was the second question. “For how many different species, I’ll guess one hundred.” Yes, that sounded like a good number. She jotted down her answers on her parchment and listened to what the other students were saying.

He was safer in there anyway.

Bel blinked in astonishment as her parchment suddenly flew away from her, handing itself in. Okay. Okay hopefully it was alright now. She was thankful that the professor helped her out with the right book, that was for sure.

And question time! She thought she knew roughly how many families there were - eighteen- and had a number in her head about species too. Bel's hand went up. "Professor, muggles have identified over 1200 bat species! There's probably a ton more they haven't yet, and I guess a ton of magical species they don't even know about! There are at least eighteen families. There are megabats, and microbats, and they used to be divided like that - I can't remember the names except that they have mega and micro and something -ptera like pteradactyl because of the wings and that they fly, but now they're divided into suborders like," what was his name, what was the head boy's name? Oh! "Ace said. BUT there's also another pair of names that some people want to classify them as? Ptera-something-forms and vesper-something-forms I can't remember exactly those either. SO I guess what I'm saying is there's a ton of change and confusion and reclassification about bats all the time in history and even now SO its not always consistent really? But that makes sense too because they make up like a fifth of all the world's mammals, you know? So them being so different to make people disagree and change their minds about how to classify them isn't all that surprising."

This was reminding her of HOME. Especially the flying fox. She watched it happily. The cutest bat. Definitely.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Daisy was amazed at her fellow students' bat knowledge. She decided to still raise her hand and answer. "There are about 200 species of bats that make up the order of er..megachiroptera aka fruit bat. They live in the tropics of places like Oceania."

Derf smiled WIDE at Diandra as they got to work, not feeling any sort of way about her comment with bats all looking the same. "That's alright," he said with a light shrug. "If you don't really know what exactly you're looking for to identify them, you know, that's pretty normal. I can teach you though!"

Though presently he was busy scribbling down on his parchment and making some quick bat sketches for his on personal reference and practice on anatomy drawings. "Vampire bats? Nah, those are mundane and, you know, they get a bad rep because of name association but really they don't DO enough to actually harm the creature or, sometimes, person they drink blood from. Bites can carry nasty infections and diseases though...but totally treatable and stuff," he explained as he proceeded to make a more detailed sketch of the vampire bat's face. "And...also like...their bites and everything are so subtle...they are super stealthy little creatures...so like...they can sometimes feast undetected. Kinda like mosquito bites."

Glancing back up at the bats, Derf had to rely on OTHER means of identifying each other than colors, though by now he had become somewhat accustomed to being able to sort through what colors he saw as opposed to everyone else.

"Mortis Bats are magical though," he nodded, pointing to the one with seemingly white eyes. "....and loads more dangerous than vampire bats...but you can handle them well enough with a well placed Knockback Jinx." Derf was moving on to sketching the Spectre Bat, seeing as he had already gone down the list in labeling each bat species accordingly on his parchment, and was too engrossed in explaining (read: rambling) to Diandra about things to notice what all was going on between Zita and Abey - though one quick glance up saw that things had taken a more positive turn and now Abey was the one in the driver's seat (so to speak) according to how he was reading body language so that left the Hufflepuff with little to worry about. Tunnel vision WAS a thing that tended to happen with him in this particular class. Insteeeead, he was moving on to draw the distinct nose of Craseonycteris thonglongyai as the lesson moved along...

.......but Derf was honestly a bit more invested in his anatomy drawings of the bats, trying to capture the distinctions between each of their faces and slight variations in wings. Besides, most people were touching on things he would already repeat - which was why he DID peek up for just a hot second to grin at Bel.

Yeah, again, noooot so familiar with bat statistics. Instead, Junia nodded in agreement when those students who seemed to know for sure what they were talking about spoke up. There was also note taking happening, the lights from the trees helping to make this a bit easier. Actually, the twinkle lights helped to make their whole environment seem just a little less scary, which she was thankful for. Glancing over at Abey to check on him, she managed a small smile before returning her attention to the professor.

Oh, so she was right on all her guesstimates for what each of the five bats on display were? Apparently her creatures studying was paying off, even if bats wasn't a topic she heavily reviewed. Or at the very least, her ability to research a textbook was useful.

Jotting down a few different notes that Professor Wayland had instructed on to enhance her own notes, she glanced up about the question. Species of bats in the entire world? Well the Head Boy had certainly been doing his research when it came to statistics and hard-to-pronounce words.

"There's an estimated 1300 species of bats, but they could all be classified into one of 20 families." At least she was almost sure it was 20, not 18, like the Head Boy had said. But she might have been mistaken? "They fall under the order classification of Chiroptera." There, that's her difficult word to pronounce of the day. Latin was paying off.

Well, that was a lot to take in.

Daehyun had been familiar with some facts of what professor Wayland had told them, but it still didn't stop him from writing everything down on a new piece of parchment to sort later into stuff he'd already known and stuff he needed to remember. Though he would pause every once in a while to admire each bat that the professor talked about, wanting so bad to pet the lovely creatures.

Even the poisonous one.

His hand shot in the air at the question. "There are about twenty families of bats," he said, his hand itching over his bestiary to flip through pages to confirm the fact. "But species, way over one thousand." And he felt a sudden urge to read about all of them. Which would likely be what he'd be doing after class.

Zoryn cared little about the activity they were made to do. It meant that pretending to look interested and as if she were actually doing the work was a lot harder than it ought to have been. She was much more interested in whatever was presumably going on with Zita and Abey. Or maybe what wasn't going on between Zita and Abey. Honestly, Zita was kinda bad news. Zoryn LOVED the drama, she LIVED for it. But her friends didn't like it so much and she felt kinda bad for them, y'know? It was much more fun when it didn't concern the people she cared for.

Anyways, anyways, anYWAYS.

Thank Merlin, Professor WayOld finally canceled the activity. Zoryn was ready to do REAL stuff now. This whole pretending to actually care about learning was so exhausting. It was actually the most work she had done in DAYS. Couldn't they just stop pretending like they were at Hogwarts for the classes? They were getting in the way of everything else!!! Dang, how come school was getting in the way of her fun. Unfair.

She also didn't care to answer the question because she didn't actually know the answer in the first place. Plus, Derf would swoop in any minute now to throw out a ridiculously long answer that she'd never remember. Or not. Was Bel a super genius on creatures too? How come Zoryn never got the memo!!

Even with her glancing around the room she hadn't noticed the professor near enough to hear them and she looked at Abey almost desperately. She needed to get out of there and she wanted out of there fast. As the professor headed the other way she saw Abey looking in his bag and at first she didn't think he had it, which would have been fine, but she would have had to come up with something else to get the hell out of there. Lucky for her she watched as he pulled something out and was handing it to her. Eyes on the professor she took it in her hand. "Thank you" She could have kissed him for this and maybe she would later, but right now she was getting the wrapper off, yawning and covering her mouth, then placing the fudge in her mouth.

Soon she was wondering how fast it would happen. Her eyes on the professor as he spoke about the bats, they were dangerous? Oh right because nonmagical weren't dangerous. Look at them, they were ready to attack one's hair at any moment. Most likely they heard the myths of their dung being used for beauty products and that was why they targetted women's hair.

It wasn't long though that she felt her cheeks warming and her body reacting to the fever that most certainly was taking hold. Wow did this make you really feel ill? She put up her hand again, "Professor, I'm sorry to bother you in your amazing talk about these creatures, but I think I need to see the healer, I'm not feeling very well."

Placing her hand on her forehead she fully played it up, though she knew anyone that would touch her would feel it as well.

Patrick looked around, well there were at least five different types of bats here. They had talked about this a little bit in his science class before he had left the states. "There's only a handful of classifications of bats, right?" he opened his textbook up hoping that it would help him figure out the answer to the question. "There are like thousands of different types of bats though." he flipped the pages, unsure of his answer.

That was A LOT of information about bats, but at least Isabel was correct in labelling them. Honestly that activity had been very easy though she understood how it could be confusing to some of the others. Really she didn’t even know a lot about bats herself though she did know enough about them to be able to recognize some of the species - as she had just done. When it came to the next question, however, she was rather at a loss.

How was she to know how many species of bats there were? How many families? Other than saying ‘a lot’, she had nothing and that wouldn’t be enough of a reply to give; especially not for someone who was in Sixth Year. Besides others were speaking and they seemed to have a good idea when it came to it, so yeah... Isabel was silently agreeing with them as well as writing down notes on what they had just been told about those five species of bats. Honestly a lot of that was just so that she had something to do before they moved on since she had already been aware of most of the information.

Also considering that bats are flying creatures, like birds, and insects, which have a lot of species, it would make sense that bats also have many species" Or at least. She hoped so, or her answer was total rubbish.
Tristan nodded listening to Hattie, "Also, very true. But again, there is a very specific amount for both and as I said before there are only two magical species and they are the sitting before you right now." He gave her a gentle smile before moving on to the next hand raised.

Tristan raised an eyebrow at Jessa's response. That wasn't like her at all. She usually had all the answers or more questions. He was sure she was just upset about not being allowed to have any bats. So, he chose to not respond and moved on to the next student.

Zae said what was on her mind, "I mean if you had like a bat encyclopedia to lend I could possibly tell you.." She couldn't help but say it. She wasn't a creature genius.
Tristan turned to Zae with folded arms and a raised eyebrow. "It should be in your textbook." With a flick of his wand he turned to the exact page in her book, winked, and moved on to the next student.

Bats...maybe he should have a few as pets one day.
Tristan looked over Nathan, who seemed to be trying not to fall asleep. He gave a small sigh and looked for another hand raised.

Finn seemed to be very interested in his textbook at the moment, which was just fine. Hopefully he was learning something.

And thats enough twisters for him for the day good sir.
Tristan nodded his head and folded his arms while listening to Tenacious. This kid knew his stuff. "Very good information. Though you are a little off on the amount of families and what about the amount of species?" He gave the young man a wink before moving on to the next hand in the air.

Tristan smiled at the young Gryffindor's very sweet and naive answer. It was very endearing. "That's not exactly how it works in determining types of animals. Of course there are going to be mom's and dad's and babies. But Families in this sense are the exact group of what they look like or what features they may have and the species within the family are the variances in those features. I hope that makes sense. If you don't understand I can explain it to you after class." He said with a gentle smile.

Tristan quickly glanced at the sixth year, but she didn't seem to have an answer for him. There were no other hands in the air so it was time to move on!

Tristan went back to his standing spot in the center of the semi-circle. "There were a few of you that were very close and some that were spot on." He paused, "There are twenty different families with 1,300 species within those families. Our magical bats would technically be family twenty-one and two species within that family. But muggles wouldn't know about them would they?" He said with a wink and a grin.

"Now, before we move on to our main activity I have a couple of questions for you." He paused to collect his thoughts, "In the magical or non-magical world, how are bats treated? What can you do to make the world a little safer for bats or magical and non-magical animals alike?" He stood with his arms crossed waiting for the answers to come rolling in. There were no right or wrong answers to the second question, so hopefully that would inspire answers from everyone.

OOC: Great job everyone!! You have 24 hours to respond and then we will move on to the main activity!

Y'know this was all SUPER boring. Zoryn found herself zoning in and out at least 1,300 times. Geddit? 'Cause apparently that number was important or something. Ha. See she was somewhat paying attention every now and then. Sort of. Dude. Zoryn was SO tired of this lesson. They weren't doing ANYTHING. When would they get to go in the super cool CAVE. This was a cop out.

Professor WayOld just kept asking questions. It was SO boooooring!!!! Her brain was SOOO not stimulated. WAIT WHAT? Zita was allowed to just LEAVE? Zoryn could fake sick WAY better than that!!! She almost raised her hand to try too, but the caaaaaaaaaave!!!! And what if they were gonna get to SEE REAL BATS!?!? That would be SO cool. Her mind had been made up. Unfortunately, she'd be here to stay.

The next question that was posed was slightly more interesting than the one that had proceeded it. So, y'know what, she'd try to answer. "Probably not good 'cause muggles are REAL scared of them. Have you ever seen a horror movie? They're EVERYWHERE. They've got a stigma or something," that was a very good word she just used there. Stigma. Dang, Zoryn was really out here impressin' herself.

Alessandro was not anticipating his parchment being ripped from his hands when the professor summoned all of their notes and stuck them underneath the blackboard. He sighed and grabbed another piece of parchment from his bag to continue taking his notes. He would have preferred to have them all concentrated on one sheet for review later. But, he was not going to argue with a professor’s method in-class or, well, ever.

He was raised better than that.

At the next question, Alessandro raised his gloved hand, “We could make a better effort not to disturb their habitats, sir.” A lot of creatures died because they did not have the safety of shelter. Alessandro knew this first hand because the snakes in his garden were always most vulnerable after the gardener trimmed the hedges.

curly haired prefect - "sometimes I get angry!" - 30/90 - *chicken emoji* - probably @ Disney - I speak dog

How were bats treated? TERRIBLY, that's how! Scarlett raised her hand with a frown. "Well, they're treated more like pests than animals, which is silly because they do a lot for the environment. A lot of them help control insects, for example," she told him. It probably had something to do with their adorable little fangs. Scarlett thought they were cute - cats had fangs and THEY were considered cute, so why not bats too??

"We need to re-educate people, muggles and wizards alike, about the GOOD they do," she explained. There was more that they could probably do, but one thing at a time.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

If there was one concept the Ravenclaw was trying to wrap her mind around, it was how anyone could still be discussing bats at the time like this. Protecting them? Not destroying their habitat. Re-educating muggles. "We can stay out of their caves." Was her only answer, her strongest hint yet that she wasn't onboard for what all the Professor may have planned in relation to that place.

Turning her gaze to the man once more, she figured she would indulge the question just a little. "We could study them before we go educating people on them." Which....apparently....not allowed to do but whatever, that wasn't her biggest gripe at the moment. Not when there was a cave of unspecified size and unspecified exit points staring her right in the face.

Was it too late to feign illness? How quickly could she push herself into an asthma attack? It'd only take a bit of determined hyperventilating to show her lungs what she expected of them.

Were the Prefects required to lead the students back to the castle afterwards? Did it really MATTER? Erik was here. He was insufferable but under the right conditions could be depended on. Circumstances like her sudden absence. Blue eyes swept across the gathering of students in search of her co-prefect. Too busy sniggering away with his mates to notice. Typical.

Jessa resolved (for the millionth time tonight) to stop thinking about it. It was only making her anxiety worse and distracting her from actually participating.

Too bad saying was so much easier than doing.
