It was a nice and cool October evening, but not cold enough to need a sweater yet. There was a soft glow of light in the sky and the sun had just dipped below the horizon; it was officially twilight. Tristan usually set up his lessons in front of the barn, but this one was set a little further into the forest than usual, but not too far. He had set up in a little clearing just outside of a cave. Nothing that would cause them harm lived here, but he knew a cave may be a little scary for some students.

As usual, there was a semi-circle of hay bales set out for the students, and his trusty blackboard was just to the right of the cave entrance. There was no evidence of what kind of creature they would be working with today. He liked keeping them surprised! To the left of the cave there was a large Adirondack Chair made out of hay bales, and that was where Professor Wayland could be found; sipping his Chai Tea from a mug shaped like a Niffler, waiting patiently for his students to arrive.

Harriet was still kind of unsure. She still didn't like the bats being up like that. She also didn't really understand why this was important. She would rather have learnt about a creature that was actually interesting, or kind of important to her development as a witch. She certainly had no interest in ever using any of this knowledge again. But the blonde did have a smile on her face. She wanted to at least look like she was interested, even if she thought she could be doing something much more useful somewhere else. Hopefully the actual main activity would be more interesting than just looking at rotating bats and trying to figure out things about them. She could have easily done that from the comfort of her in comfy chair in the common room. so she was hoping the lesson might get a bit more interesting.

The blonde tilted her head as she began to write her final notes. That hadn't taken too long. She wasn't sure if it was totally right, but she really didn't care. Not like she was going to do use this information, and also this wasn't her best subject, so she was sure it was okay to be a little wrong. Only a little though

The bats didn't look injured, so there was no temptation to touch them. Felicity would have preferred to look at them in their habitats, though, but she supposed that they didn't seem to be annoyed and they were on a branch, so that was okay. Looking up for a few moments as the branch rotated, Felicity then leaned down and pulled out her textbook and notebook from her bag, before turning to Junia and shrugging. The Ravenclaw (Finn) had a point, though - and index sounded about right. When she'd found the page on bats, she nudged Junia and pointed to the page number she'd found.

Okay, so Care of Magical Creatures might have been her favourite subject, but that didn't mean she knew everything about every creatures. And bats weren't something she'd really done a lot of reading on, although she had seen a fair few back home in the US. The annoying thing was, however, that none of these bats were those bats.

But that's what they had textbooks for, right?

Okay maybe time to tackle the first two. The he flipped several pages, skimming to look for colors. Blue... blue... blue... there! He put his thumb in the page for spectre bats and kept looking. Not surprisingly, he didn't find any other blue bats listed. Okay, that made it pretty obvious.

Finn was pretty sure he had seen the word 'green' somewhere, but the question was which page. After several minutes of scanning, he managed to find only one. Mortis bat? Scary. He looked at the real bat in front of him, then compared it to the lines in his book. It mostly fit, and he didn't have any better ideas.

As for bat number four, the biggest thing that would set it apart would be the long wings. But lots of bats had long wings. The only other type of bat he knew of was a fruit bat, so he decided to find that one. Nope, green eyes. Back to square one.

Index, yes, but Junia knew this already. She was just hoping one of them had already checked there and could give her the exact location, one Felicity had provided not too long after the Botros girl had begun her search. She gave her friend a smile in turn and looked over the information provided, scribbling down the names of bats that seemed to fit the ones she'd been observing.

It was highly probable that if Abra wasn't already rethinking his approach to this part of the lesson, he would have groaned or huffed or maybe even got a bit tearful when Wayland just so HAPPENED to announce to everyone that he wanted their answers written down. As it was, he was already thinking about getting his parchment and quill out of his bag to do just that.

Though... what Wayland said about collecting their work... that was something that put Abra into even more of a tailspin that he'd already been in. Merlin. Why did professors always want to SEEEEEEEEE their work? The same went for homework; couldn't they just trust that they knew the things and then EVERYONE (Abra was thinking mostly about himself here) WOULD BE HAPPY. But. Okay. No. This was fine. It was fine. Okay.

Merlin.

Notes he would do, but only because he needed to. Notes he would do, but the textbook would remain firmly shut, and was only being brought out of his bag to serve as a sort of writing surface.

Zita was still very close beside him, and Abra had to pause for a moment to work out how this was going to work. He could not, under any circumstances, let her see his work. Not because he thought she might copy but because he just... didn't want anyone to see. After setting his book and parchment on his lap, and grabbing a self-inking quill from his bag, Abra leaned so low over his parchment that he was blocking anyone else from seeing, but actually given that he was also blocking any light from reaching it, he also ended up blocking his own view. Not only did his writing end up littered with misspellings and occasional letters back to front, it also looked very much like someone had tried to write it in the dark, and each line sloped dramatically downwards the closer it got to the right of the page.

Bats.

That made Cameron...a little sad. It made him think of Celyn. He glanced over at Jessa for a moment, who seemed to be engaged in something else however. Nevermind then. Bats. Right. Yeah. He had ended up staring at the bats on the tree without really seeing them until Natalie spoke. Textbook. Right.

Oh.

Textbook. "Yeah, I did." He pulled it out and flipped through the pages until he'd found the chapter on bats. Holding the book so that Natalie could easily see it too he then started to actually look at the bats they were supposed to identify. "I'd say that's a Vampire Bat." He said to the twins, pointing to one in question, #3. "And the blue one is a Spectre Bat, yeah?" He doubted there was more than one blue bat so he wrote that one down, too.

Identify the bats? Aww Scarlett LOVED bats! They were super adorable, and got such a bad rap. Most of them just wanted to eat fruit and be at peace, but then muggles got these weird ideas about them being vampires in disguise, and suddenly they were creepy crawlies that no one liked.

Well, some of them DID have rabies, so that wasn't cool.

She turned to the task at hand and wrinkled her brows. She had to look up what that word meant. Hematophagous. She pulled out her textbook and went to the back, looking up what the word meant. Feeding on blood? Ok, so that was definitely the vampire bat, right? She wrote that down on her parchment. She knew what the littlest one was - it was also the CUTEST one, look how tiny!! - and identified that as the bumblebee bat. She scribbled that on her parchment as well. She was going to just guess, then, that the fourth one was a fruit bat. It was the most...normal looking bat out of all of them.

Now for the other two, which she was PRETTY sure were the magical ones. She knew just from going to zoos a lot growing up that muggles didn't know about poisonous bats. She flicked through her textbook for a bit until she came up on the section about the poisonous bats - Mortis bat? Sounded good to her. She wrote that down on the first bat before looking up the second bat. That one looked more like a ghost than a bat. Did they have ghost bats? After a few more minutes of skimming her books...yeah, apparently they did. Interesting. The Spectre bat? Never heard of it, but it fit the description they'd been given.

Three out of five and only one she was sure of. Well, okay, at least the first two were definitely magical, that Night knew as well. Couldn't the lesson just start already? Honestly she agreed with Emmalyn about the books. How were the other students doing so well?

As Zarina patiently waited to know the lesson, she heard the Professor announce they were working with bats!? That is pretty cool. This slytherin had never got up close and personal with a bat before. This was going to be interesting. She waited while the crowd died down and was inspecting from afar. Zae grabbed her parchment and quill ready to take some notes and went to the line up. One bat caught her eye, the final bat ironically enough. She felt bad he/she was tinier than all the others. He/she probably didn't stand a chance in a fight. "Hey little fella.." she said to him and began to differentiate the details. She noticed it didn't have a sign to it so it must be a muggle bat. No magical abilities. Then she didn't know the name of the bat and glanced at someone else's parchment and snickered and wrote down it was the bumble bee bat. Pretty cool name.

Now onto the 4th bat, this one seemed longer than little Winston over there. He seemed like he could swallow him. "Man your tall...I guess you got the tall gene in the family huh?" She examined his eyes and saw the dark brown eyes blinking at him. The third bat seemed magical because of the name of its species. That was a no brainer. The second bat was definitely magical and now the first bat that was poisonous. Well it seemed to her it could be magical as well or maybe not. I mean in the muggle world like snakes are poisonous and can harm ya. She made her guess and went back to sit down after inspecting the semi cute creatures.

Natalie looked over as Cam opened his book up. He had seemed to be a little distracted beforehand. It made her curious... but she would ask later. If she remembered. Natalie peered over into his textbook and skimmed over some bat stuff. She listened to what he said and nods. "Uhh, yeah, Spectre Bat. Sure." Sounded legit to her. She added those to her notes, glancing over at Cam's to make sure they matched because he was probably the smarter one here.

She looked up again just in time to see Zita raising her hand... again. She almost ignored her, until she realized she was asking to leave... because... Because there wasn't enough light to show how amazing she looked? L-O-L.

Oh, but then she saw her hands trembling....

Merlin's shaggy beard... Was Zita SCARED of BATS?

GOLD.

Natalie sniggered quietly to herself when the professor told her she couldn't leave and then looked back down at her notes to add more. If she ever needed something to get Zita back with... this would be it.

She knew he would say no and it wasn't that she was expecting a yes, but she needed a yes. She should have gone with sick, but she didn't want the looks with that either. Now she was going to be stuck with these bats and she didn't want to be. She just sat there for a long time, just sitting and staring.

She didn't know what she was going to do, but this was not what she wanted to do. Pulling out her parchment and quill she just kept looking around at everyone. She knew she was super close to Abey, but she couldn't help it and now shew as going to have to tell someone that she wasn't going near those things. "Abey, I.. I can't look at them, I can't go near them. I'm terrified of them." There she said it in a whisper so only he could hear, but she said it to someone. Zita Valla told her fear to someone other than her sisters. Everyone knew she didn't do quidditch because she was afraid of heights, that fear didn't seem to be a big deal, but this, this was something she wasn't going to make a full out of herself over.

Looking at her parchment she scribbled down her own version of notes:

A whisper it was, but Abra still gave a jolt of surprise when he heard Zita speak to him again. As much as he had been trying to focus on his notes, for a few moments he had allowed himself to sort of mentally remove himself from the lesson, but even just that whisper - being that it was so close to him - had startled him enough that it was clear he was still very tense.

After quickly scribbling his name at the top of his parchment, Abra turned it so it was face down on top of his textbook and looked properly at Zita again. Even after everything with Derf, and then with his other worries still currently rattling around his head, Abra felt a huge rush of sympathy towards her. He knew what it was like to have to face something he was terrified of. Actually, he experienced it literally constantly, in a way, but he really did knew how it felt when a lesson involved facing a very specific fear, and how difficult it could be, and also how horrible it felt to have to deal with that fear in front of everyone else.

"You could pretend you're sick or something, so you can leave?" he whispered to her, taking the greatest care to lower his voice as much as possible. He thought about suggesting that she stay outside the cave with him, if, indeed, that was where this lesson was going, but there were so many possible flaws with this plan that it didn't seem worth mentioning. Abra's thoughts then strayed to his schoolbag, inside which he kept something to be used in case of emergencies. "Do you want..." He lowered his voice even further, if that were possible, and leaned in a little closer to make sure he could be heard. "Do you want some Fever Fudge?"

She at least wrote something, it might not have been anything the professor wanted, but it was something. She soon was looking right at Abey as he whispered about leaving, her eyes met his and even though she was trying to keep her composure and her cool appearance her eyes spoke volumes of the fear she did have. She tried to leave and yes she did fail for the good reason but did she really want people to think she was sick.

Taking a glance towards the bats she froze, was one looking at her? OMG IT WAS LOOKING AT HER!!! No, no, breath, it was just her mind playing tricks on her. Yeah, she needed out of there and out of there fast. Leaning a bit closer to fully hear. He had fever fudge with him. Do you use that often? It really works?" She was impressed, but also very nosy to why he needed it and why he used it. Right now wasn't the time to ask those questions. She gave a glance around and then nodded a yes to him and a mouthed, please.

Bats…

Okay so bats weren’t too bad. They weren’t acromantulas or any of the other more dark creatures that you could possibly find in a cave such as the one beside Professor Wayland. Now to identify them, Cassie would need to put in some effort as she wasn’t all that familiar with the various kinds of bats both mudane and magical as the professor explained that they might be. Although she was pretty sure that the blue skin was definitely magical as she didn’t expect to find a creature like that in your average zoo or wildlife preserve.

Maybe the green skin one too.

Cassie took out a completely clean sheet of parchment to write down her identifications seeing as she had it in. She numbered one through five and gave each of the descriptions that she noted before she could look them over better and compare them to the textbook she had on her. 1…2…3…4…5 She would have to wait and see if she was good at picking out what she needed.

Tristan noticed the strange face that Bel was making at him. It seemed as if she was having some sort of troubles. He slowly made his way to her, and once he came near enough, he saw that her textbook was not the required text for his class. He gave her an understanding smile and with a flick of his wand, an extra textbook flew into his hands. He handed it to her and said, "That should help Bel. Just make sure you order the correct one and give that back when you have it." He gave her wink and moved on around the semi-circle.

Interestingly enough, he happened to be standing behind Abraham and Zita for that interesting conversation, but decided to let it happen and walked away before they noticed him. Obviously, she had a reputation to withhold, though he would definitely need to have a conversation with them both in the next day or two.

Before he spoke, he made sure he was on the opposite side from Abraham and Zita. He didn't want to scare them. "You have about five more minutes and then we need to move on!" He circled around, there for anyone who needed help.

OOC: Ok guys! I am going to give you until about 12pm EST tomorrow and then we will move on! You are doing awesome! Keep it up!

Of all the creatures that roamed the earth, this class had BATS as it's topic. The universe is just toying with me. If she'd known it was bats, she would have stayed in her cozy common room, sleeping. Even better, explore the castle. Why did I have to come, why?

Amara's eyes widened as she saw the rotating limb with the bats hanging upside down. She'd never seen green bats. Never. Her shoulders tensed.

Poisonous

Ability to Stun

Boy, she didn't know how to and the bat knew! It was disturbing. She began gathering her stuff and was ready to jump the moment the bats charge. You just wait for them. They will... just...

HUH.

Why wasn't anyone else alarmed by this Hemato...Hetama...UHHHHH WHATEVER UGLY LOOKING BAT!

Okay that sound better in her head, it was a good thing that was where it was going to stay. Funny though because she had a conversation with Zar about bats over at the pathways not too long ago. She had to stop of herself from nerding out then. But now this was a lesson so she was totally going to nerd out here.

The last two didn’t have a sign above so she looked over both of them very good. The last one was tiny, and she squinted her eyes to get all better look of it. Was it even a bat or leaf? It was that small.

Slate flipped through the text book to try and find out more information. His eyes fell on the Spectre Bat. Yes. Bat number two. So the first two were magical. He updated his notes and continued flipping through the book. He... didn't see any other information about other bats though.

Slate grinned. Of course she'd know some obscure word that had something to do with blood. He watched as she flipped through the book. "I guess that makes sense." he said with a nod. Not that he had any idea. He knew nothing. Actually, that wasn't completely true. "The only thing I actually know about bats is that there is a type called 'fruit bat.'" He knew that much about bats. And now his knowledge had reached it's height.

So he'd basically just agree with whatever she said at this point. That wasn't really different from their normal dynamic.

Well the two books had the same colour cover so it had been an easy mistake to make, grabbing the wrong one.

"Thanks Professor Wayland." Bel said in relief. She didn't want to get any sort of fail grades in a subject that she liked as much as this one. It did get hard sometimes, because things weren't exactly the same back home, so a lot of what they learned and took for granted as normal here was utterly different. The bright side was that quite often Bel's Care of Magical Creatures experience in the United Kingdom was confronting something new and exciting.

Bats for instance.

Which were only semi-new, but at least some of the ones on display she didn't know.

She opened the borrowed textbook, balancing it on one knee and began to scan through the bat section. Her parchment on her other knee, she began to write down the answers as she gleefully found them and read a bit about them since they were new to her. There was also a definition of the hemato word (which wasn't anything to do with a boy-tomato, she had wondered). Oh! A blood sucker! Once she had the meaning of that Bel was quickly able to identify that bat was a vampire bat. Those weren't magical were they? She was pretty sure they weren't, unless they had some kind of magical quality she didn't know about. She marked them down as non-magical and also wrote down a few more notes for her own reference since she didn't know jack about the magical bats before reading about them just now.

Having written down the newly identified bats, Bel read over it and wondered if she should be writing down more about what she knew about flying foxes and bumblebee bats. Maybe she'd add more as the class went on? Was what she had too much already? She'd only done it for her own remembering though.

Daehyun was confident that it was a flying fox? That was good enough for Shera. Especially after having read the same paragraph in her textbook three times and still not having processed the information, or been able to figure out how to apply that to the bats in front of her.

So she quickly altered her notes in order to match Daehyun's ~~because she had all the faith in the world that he was incredible when it came to knowing about animals~~, and let herself sit back to relax.

Her eyes shifted to Daehyun at his question about patting the bats and she shrugged lightly, before quietly responding, "I'm sure we'll be interacting with them in some kind of a way before the lesson is over... and if we ask at the end he'll probably be happy we're interested?" Though the Ravenclaw wasn't sure as to whether or not he'd agree to their question.

She hadn’t thought there would be, what with the cave and all but it never hurt to hope. “That’s okay, professor. I’m sure whatever we learn about today will be just as cute as a unicorn.” In its own way. Nothing was as cute as a unicorn… except for well… a unicorn. “You don’t?!” she giggled. Boy, was he missing out! She nodded her head of ginger hair making a mental note to find out what his favorite creature was and get him a cup just like her own. Cause he wanted one. Mhmm. She heard him say as much. Would it be strange if she gave her professor a gift?

“Uh-huh!” Rylee exclaimed giving a little bounce on her not very comfy but can handle it hay bale as she answered Miranda's questions. “Professor Wayland says we’re not going to see any unicorns today but that’s alright.” It was only a small heartbreak. “I’m good! I owl home all the time and mirror Rian and Reese lots…” Like daily, every night. Even if it’s just to say goodnight. She missed her unofficial twin so so sooo much. “Our common room is great! And everyone’s been really nice to me so far.” See, no problems here. Bright blue eyes shone happily as she turned her attention onto the professor since the lesson was starting now.

With as much of her attention as she could muster turned onto the professor, she pulled out a sheet of clean parchment and her quill which of course was dipped into purple glittery ink. Her quill met the parchment to begin her note taking, only she paused.

Bats?

Bats were NOT unicorns. Not even close. Though some of them were really rather cute looking. Like the ones that flew around the forest at home. As the professor made the bats visible she gave a wiggle in excitement. “So cute…” she whispered nudging Miranda. “Lookit that itty bitty one.” Giggles.
Aaww they weren’t allowed to touch them. That stunk. So simple ole’ note taking it was. It was time to see how much she knew and remembered from all those books she read. Including her textbook. And her adventures out in the forest at home with Reese.

Rylee tugged her textbook from her bag at her feet and began to quickly flip through the pages making sure the names she had written down on her parchment were correct to the best of her knowledge. It never hurt to double check when you could even if you knew the answers.

" Oh yeah?.. How is he handling you being here and him not?", she asked her little friend as she looked at the sample bats.

Miranda worked quickly on her notes and tried to find all of the different bats in her book, but was for some reason having a hard time identifying them all..

" Mhm.. It's so bitty.. Who knew such things were in existence?",
she said with a giggle.. Still looking it and the other bats over.

He was still at war with himself over the vampire bat - actually, they were all magical to him, but he wasn't sure if the vampire bat would truly be magical or not, so first he'd scribbled over the magical that he'd left, and wrote non-magical once again... before cutting off the non one more time and, giving up, he wrote both magical and non-magical.

"What do you think of this one?" he'd asked Shera, tapping his quill over the description of the vampire bat on his notes. "Magical or not?"

All beings were magical to him. Whether they could do actual magic or not.

His eyes lit up when Shera said they might interact with the bats, and to say that he was looking forward to it would be an understatement. "I hope so," he said, setting the piece of parchment on his lap, and his quill on top of it.

... then he cut off the magical one more time, before setting his quill down with a sigh before the parchment absorbed enough ink to make a hole in it in that very particular spot next to the vampire bat.

Bats.

Well, good thing Théo brought his textbook because he would be more lost than he already was. also, the signs helped. One was poisonous and he was trusting students not to touch it. Schools that were not Hogwarts would not even attempt to bring a poisonous animal unless it was in like a tank or something away from any kids or just no risk. He looked in his textbook and yep magical or Mortis Bat. Cool name. the second one too judging by the warning.

oh looks like that one is the spectre bat.

Yeah the fourth year was bored already, with taking notes. But it seemed as he walked around some more and looked at the remaining ones theses were just normal bats.

So only two magical.

Okay. So. Abra decided not to answer the part about whether he used the Fever Fudge often, because... well, that sort of depended on the person, right? He didn't use it nearly as often as he got the urge to, but that was mainly because too many fevers in the same classes in a short space of time would make professors mega suspicious. Then again, Abra knew some people who would be horrified at the idea of using a Skiving Snackbox even once. One person in particular.

But to the other question, he nodded. Because it sure worked.

When Zita answered him in the affirmative, Abra smiled at her in what he hoped was a comforting way, and tried to work out exactly how to get the Fudge out of his bag without being seen, because he was aware of exactly how close Professor Wayland was to the pair of them. He'd been keeping an eye out, of course, but (mistakenly) sure that he had been quiet enough that the plan had not been heard, something that he felt was confirmed when Wayland didn't say anything to them about it and actually in fact actually went off in an entirely different direction. Abra was fairly certain that had he heard, he'd have called them out on it before they could execute the plan.

Wayland walking away was exactly the opportunity Abra needed. With the professor's back now turn, he leaned down and quickly dipped his hand into his bag and rummaged around. At first, he couldn't find what he needed, and for a heart-stopping moment Abra thought that perhaps he had been mistaken and didn't have the sweets in there anymore, but find it he did. Straightening again, he moved the Fever Fudge, wrapped up in its magically noiseless wrapper (the manufacturers really did think of everything), into his other hand, and then quickly handed it off to Zita.
