Default The Igloo

Banner credit: Suziella

Behind the Groundskeeper's Hut, right at the edge of the Forbidden Forest towers an igloo. A spell keeps it from melting during the warmer seasons and despite some protest from the Groundkeeper’s side, the students are welcome to enter. This is where Mr. Baldvinsson likes to retreat when the Scottish summer gets too warm or when he needs to reminisce of his many years as a ranger on Svalbard.

Since the Igloo is completely made of ice, inside and out, you’ll notice it’s a clever idea to borrow one of the fur coats provided by Mr. Baldvinsson. Please leave the coat (undamaged, thank you) by the entrance for the next student to use.

Inside the Igloo are several ice statues in the shape of both magical and non-magical creatures that Mr. Baldvinsson found an interest in back home. A large sofa with a warming fur throw is located at one side of the room where you may take a seat and flip through one of the books on how to lure a polar bear, using snow patterns to track down a wolf pack or the quickest way to locate a hot spring. In the evening, a beautiful display of the northern lights is shown with green and blue lights dancing across the icy ceiling.

Any use of heatening charms such as Chaudensis or any fire spells are strictly forbidden, for obvious reasons. Please make sure to leave the Igloo as you found it and don’t let the northern lights make you forget the time for curfew. Mmhm.

The igloo was as beautiful as always. She remembered coming here last year and meeting up with Tenacius. That whole hang out session had led to so much... She had learned more about him and his friends. Then after that, she had even become friends with his friends. Like Mel for instance. She and Mel were super close now and she enjoyed her company immensely. Not only that the two were now OFFICIALLY roomies!

But anyway.... Because of that hang out sesh, it had def become one of Olivia's favourite places to go and spend time out. Besides that, it was magnificent. So one of the first things Olivia had to do, naturally, was visit the igloo. Despite it being warm in September, she knew that she very well needed a coat to venture inside of it.

Grabbing one of the coats and slipping into it, she turned to face the Igloo with a wide smile on her lips, ready to explore. Right? Where should she begin?

Igloos were a rather strange addition to Hogwarts, but one that Rosalyn could get behind since ice sculptures were pretty. In fact she had been wanting to learn how to make them for quite some time but hadn't gotten around to trying yet what with everything else that was going on in her life. Maybe if she figured it out she could have students make some for an art project outside during the winter months... She put that idea on the back burner for either this term or the next one.

Pulling the fur coat snug around her to fight off the cold, she admired some of the sculptures before taking a seat on the sofa. Picking up a book at random, she raised her brow. Why would ANYONE want to lure a polar bear? Despite the fact that they were beautiful animals, they were incredibly dangerous. Shaking her head, she started flipping through, more from curiosity than anything else.

Gosh, it was nice to have the enchanting igloo around once more. The now sixth year hadn’t exactly had the time to enjoy it much the previous term (though she’d wanted to) because of well…being utterly and completely side-tracked by other important things. Namely studying and well there was also all the time she spent distracting herself from studying with Kirk after the ball happened.

Still, she had p r o m i s e d Olivia that she would go there and check out the place this term…grabbing a coat and casting a quick heating charm on her tights she walked into the igloo and grinned.

Well, lookie there. ”We’ve got to stop running into eachother like this” she just winked. Really, she didn’t mind running into Olivia at all she was her friend and well…roomie? It was great really.

There were still several features of the grounds that Emmeline hadn't explored yet. Usually when she came outside last term, it was to either attend a lesson or go to the barn and play with the creatures. She figured that that would be the case this term, too, but she also kind of wanted to explore a bit more. She was still determined to see every part of Hogwarts before she graduated, and she realllllly wanted to learn the secret passageways by heart.

The second year stopped outside of the igloo and tilted her head to the side a little. Having a secret passageway inside an igloo to get into the castle kind of seemed like something Mr. B might do, so Emmeline trudged closer to the igloo and snagged one of the fur coats the Flying teacher always left out for visitors. Plus, she'd never been inside an igloo before, and she figured it might be kind of...cool. Hehehe.

She flung the fur coat over herself and went inside the igloo to find...ice sculptures. Of CREATURES!!! That was awesome! 'Cept the igloo wasn't empty of people either; the girl Professor Marchand was on the couch. Emmeline grinned and called out from her place next to the nearest ice sculpture: "Hiiii, Professor Marchand!" Nope, she didn't have any issues remembering the professor's new last name. She was married to her Head of House, after all. And and, Cami Professor Stewart talked about her professor-friends allll the time, mhm.

As soon as she heard a very familiar voice, Olivia turned around to find... "MEL!" she cried and hugged her friend and roomie. They were actually official roomies this year and Olivia couldn't have been more excited for it. Though it had been a while since the two had hung out so Vi was so ready to catch up and just hang out with Melbourne. She laughed at Mel's statement about running into each other at such things and she replied with her own rather teasing comment, "Come here often or only on certain days of the week?" She followed that response up with a wink and cheeky smile. "I personally love to come here any time I can. It's beautiful..." Vi loved it here. But anyway.... She glanced at Mel.

"Anyway, how have you been? How was the remainder of your summer?" she asked with a wide grin. She wanted to her everything about what was up in Mel's world.

Hearing someone calling her name, Rosalyn lifted her head up from the book and smiled at Emmeline. "Hello, Miss Sparkes." It was nice to know that she had no problem remembering her new name; though of course it would be perfectly fine if she hadn't - there would surely be some students who forgot initially. "So how are you? Did you have a good summer?" Cami had told her a bit about how things were going, and she was happy to hear that there was a good guardian in the girl's life now.

Yep, this was definitely better than reading about luring polar bears. Student interactions always made Rosalyn happy.

Emmeline returned the professor's smile a little, tiiiiny bit wearily. She was still getting used to the idea that some adults at Hogwarts could be trusted, or probably could be trusted. She was also still always on the watch for SUSPICIOUS behavior, especially from possible Dark Wizard Professor Myers. But she had liked her Head of House a lot, a lot from the beginning of last term, and the fact that the girl Professor Marchand had married him -- especially given his condition -- had given the twelve-year-old a fairly high opinion of the History of Magic professor. Plus, Cami said that she was one of her faaaavorite professor-friends, which meant that Emmeline was sort of duty-bound to give her the benefit of the doubt that she didn't usually extend to adults, mhm.

She edged slightly closer to Professor Marchand's couch before replying: "Gooood, thanks! How're you, Professor? Did you, ummm, help the other Professor Marchand with his, you know, monthly thing?" She didn't think it was possible that the two professors had gotten married without her Head of House telling his wife his BIIG secret. The big secret that Derf had uncovered last term, and that had made Emmeline a bit more worried about the Charms professor's tiredness and stuff than she had been before. She skated right over the question about her summer, 'cause she still had mixed feelings about the whole running away at the beginning of the summer thing.

Given Emmeline's understandable distrust of certain adults, Rosalyn was very pleased to see that the girl was comfortable enough around her to move in a little closer. The girl was more than welcome to sit with her, but that was not something that she would press; it would happen in its own time if it happened at all. It was nice enough to know that she was being trusted.

"I am doing great! Just thought I would come by here and admire these sculptures." And maybe figure out a way that they could be used for an art lesson. Maybe all the skill required was in cutting the ice a certain way as opposed to something more complicated. People just needed to have a steady hand... "So how are you?" she added, realising that she was getting lost in a train of thought. "What monthly thing would this be?" Now Rosalyn was utterly confused. Did Emmeline know about something she didn't? That would be very weird because Gaston told her everything...

The sculptures were super pretty. And and, they were of creatures, which automatically made them awesome in Emmeline's opinion. The second year sidled closer to the professor's couch, and had ended up perched on the edge of it by the time Professor Marchand had been confused about her husband's condition. She smiled tentatively instead and offered, "They're pretty... I've never been in here before." And she still wanted to see if the igloo held any secrets, but it kind of seemed like it would be hard to hide a secret passageway inside here. Everything was so clear and...not bright, exactly, but full of a sort of light and clarity that the rest of the grounds didn't seem to have. At least she thought so.

Emmeline bit her lip and chewed on it a little, 'cause how was she going to tell the professor something this, um, sensitive gently? She couldn't just blurt the Charms professor's secret out, even if this place did seem pretty private. So she lowered her voice again and went on, "You know... The, um, condition that makes him all tired every month and stuff." She was still sure that Professor Marchand did know her husband's secret, really. Maybe there was some fancy, big word for the condition that Emmeline didn't know or something. Or some other way that adults referred to stuff like that in conversations, like a code word or a secret phrase. That was probably it, mhm.

So Emmeline had never been here before; Rosalyn was happy to hear that she was continuing to explore the school. There were always new things to discover it seemed! Certainly the groundskeepers liked to change things up a bit over the years, as there were certain things missing from when she had gone to Hogwarts, and new things added in - like this very igloo. "I've been in here once before, but I don't come too often because it's really cold. I just wanted to admire the sculptures. Maybe I could try my hand at making one..." And then she could do an art lesson on it... Unless things didn't work out. "They're really pretty. I find it rather calming here." Despite the cold.

...

Rosalyn leaned in a little so that she could hear what Emmeline was telling her a little better, and she was still confused. What condition??? "I'm not sure I follow - OH! Are you referring to the fact that he was sad?" Poor Gaston had a rather hard time last term and it broke her heart to see it. Thank Merlin things were a lot better now.

It was really cold in here, even with the fur coat on and everything. Emmeline wondered briefly if she should conjure some bluebell flames, but she didn't want to hurt the cool ice sculptures or anything. She gave Professor Marchand a small smile when she said that she'd come in here to see the ice sculptures. "Oh wow, are you an Artist? Like a real one?", she asked with a bit of awe in her voice. Professor Marchand had to be a real artist if she was going to try to make ice sculptures, right? 'Cause that was super cool! She knew that the History professor was also teaching art classes this term, buuut she already had LOADS of extra curriculars and extra classes, so she hadn't signed up for art too.

The Gryffindor frowned at Professor Marchand when she still didn't get it, despite all of Emmeline's super helpful hints. She knew about the boy Professor Marchand's sadness, too, and some of the reasons behind it, 'cause he'd told her in his office before Christmas last term. When she'd gotten that evil letter from her parents too... Anyway, she shook her head a little 'cause she wasn't talking about that, really. "Nooo, but did you beat his father up?", she asked with a frown. She hoped the professor had, 'cause if one of her best friends or James had a father like that and she was all grown up, she'd definitely hex the jerk. She paused, looked around again to TRIPLE check that no one else was in the whole igloo, before she turned back to the professor and went on in a whisper, "You know...his werewolf condition." Adults took forever to put hints together sometimes, mhm.

Was she an artist? Rosalyn had actually never been asked that by a student before, which was slightly surprising. "Well, I wouldn't say that I am anything like the world famous artists, but I have studied art extensively and have done a lot of it. I've participated in exhibitions a few times, though I never made it big since I was a librarian before working to become a teacher." And now she got to teach an art class as well and that was amazing. Maybe at some point Emmeline would sign up for it, but of course it was okay if she didn't; it just seemed that the girl would probably have a knack for it. Everyone could be an artist if they tried; with so many different forms of art there was surely at least one thing that a person could find themselves to be good at. Besides, with all the different tastes a lot of things could be considered art in a sense.

...

Had she beaten Gaston's father up??

Rosalyn's eyes widened at the question. "Oh no. I mean I wanted to say and do certain things to him for sure, but beating people up is not the right way to go about doing things." Hopefully Emmeline knew this because it would not be good at all if the girl thought that course of action was okay. Probably there was no real need for concern since she was such a nice child.

But as much as that question had had shocked her, Rosalyn felt even MORE at a loss when Emmeline went to call her husband a WEREWOLF. Was that some kind of joke??? Gaston, a werewolf? It was absolutely absurd, but given the look on the girl's face there was no way that this was anything BUT serious. "Why do you think that he is a werewolf, Emmeline?" She asked the question kindly, seriously wanting to know how she had come to that conclusion. Was there a rumor floating around? Or was this something that she alone thought?

She asked the question kindly, seriously wanting to know how she had come to that conclusion. Was there a rumor floating around? Or was this something that she alone thought?
Professor Marchand had had exhibitions of her OWN art? Wo-ow. Emmeline gave the professor another bright smile, but tried not to look too impressed. She wasn't sure why, really, but she had this feeling in the back of her mind that she didn't want a reputation of being all SUPER impressed by half of the teachers, mhm. The librarian thing threw her for a loop, though; Mr. Kennedy was all nice and stuff, but libraries just seemed so...boring. Honestly, Emmeline had a feeling that she was allergic to books that weren't alllll about creatures. She wrinkled her nose a little bit and asked, "Were you in Ravenclaw, Professor?" Not that there was anything wrong with Ravenclaws, but...there were a lot of nerds in that House, mhm. She supposed that being a nerd was okay too, as long as the nerd in question had FUN in their lives also.

Anyway, her thoughts had gotten all tangled up in Ravenclaw and nerds so that she may not have said anything else about art out loud. Ooops. She frowned a bit in confusion at the professor's expression when she started talking about her father-in-law and replied, "But...aren't there people who deserve it 'cause they're just BAD? Like like, he made Professor Marchand all sad and stuff for a WHOLE year." She knew you couldn't just go around beating up people you didn't like. But the professor's father was more than mean; he was cruel and he made the professor SAD a LOT and stuff. It crossed a line, didn't it?

Why did she think he was a werewolf? Emmeline gave the professor a reallllly, super confused look. She almost thought that the History professor was kidding, 'cept she didn't look like that. And she had that adult tone of voice where they think you're making up stories. Emmeline had to admire Professor Marchand for being a super good actresss; she just had to PROVE that she already knew the secret so that the professor wouldn't be all upset and secretive anymore, mhm. "Oh, Derf figured it out last term. He checked lunar charts, and Professor Marchand was ALWAYS extra, extra tired and sad around the full moons. I gave him a box of dog biscuits that my cruppy realllllly likes for Valentine's Day. Did they help?" See? She had done stuff to try to make his full moons better, so hopefully that was enough to prove that she was in on the secret.

Oh goodness!!!

Emmeline now had Rosalyn laughing; while it may not have been the girl's intention, it was still somewhat amusing in her mind. Clearly it had come about with the knowledge that she had worked in a library at some point; it had been a degree she went for as a backup if teaching didn't work out, and she HAD really enjoyed the job. "Yes, I certainly was. I guess you could say that it more than explains my love of reading. Of course not to say that people are placed into neat little boxes when it comes to Houses." There were certainly exceptions and people who fit into more than one House; she herself felt a nice mixture of Ravenclaw and Hufflpuff though she had been placed in the former.

Hearing about Raoul always made Rosalyn rather upset, but there was no way that she was going to let that show; especially not now when Emmeline was talking about beating people up. "I certainly don't like him making Professor Marchand sad either, but I still wouldn't hurt him. There are better ways to deal with things; really I think that defending yourself is the only time where it is okay. Well, that and duelling club." Because being realistic, things could get REALLY heated there. Yes, she was wearing her professor hat right now; that kind of came along with the job.

Oh goodness. Derf was involved in this as well? Rosalyn couldn't help but find this whole thing rather precious despite everything. "I can't really say that they helped much, because well... Professor Marchand isn't a werewolf. Though I have to say that I am rather impressed with your skills of deduction." She completely meant it too; she was beyond happy to hear that her students had been paying attention to something and trying to find an explanation for something that they felt to be off.

The SWEAT, the HORROR. The groundskeeper hurried to his the igloo. He wasn't dramatic, it was just a lot to ask for him to do work outside on the grounds when the sun was SO. BRIGHT. He shuffled inside, letting out a loud sigh of relief when the cool air hit him.

Oh, sweet frosty Merlin.

A particularly eventful flying lesson that morning, with a few minor accidents plus two third years venturing into the forbidden forest was too much to handle before lunch.

"Too old." He murmured as he sat down on a cool bench inside the igloo. "And too many french butter cakes." He needed to catch his breath, and cool down before going back outside again.

So, naturally, he snacked on some peanuts, waiting for strength to return to him. Crunch, crunch.

"Anyway, how have you been? How was the remainder of your summer?" she asked with a wide grin. She wanted to her everything about what was up in Mel's world.

The excitement in Olivia’s voice only made Mel beam when she cried her name to her. ”VI!” she beamed back at her as she throw the same excited tone at her friend before breaking down into a fit of giggles as Olivia winked, ah she was precious. Could she keep her? Like in per pocket.

Vi laughed at Mel's cheeky comment. Only day's that ended with Y. "Merlin. Have I been keeping you for long?" she joked. If Mel was here every day that began with Y, then she would have certainly been keeping her friend here. "You're an expert. Maybe I should get a tour of this igloo from you!" She winked, continuing the ruse. Ah, it was great just to be silly with Mel again. Oh how she had missed her friend over the summer.

Olivia just wanted to hear about everything and more about how Mel was doing. Sure, they were roomies and all but the two were both busy with classes, extracurriculars, and respective boyfriend and special friend. "No Ministry?" repeated Vi who was blown away by such a statement. Paperwork and boring? That did not sound like Vi's scene at all. She felt kind of glad that she had been too young to sign up for the application. Sometimes having a birthday in the later half of the summer paid off quite nicely. Her eyebrows raised when Mel informed her that she had already started planning a world trip. "WOW", cried Olivia with her blue eyes widening in shock. That sounded amazing. Traveling together and all and... But she and Ace had spoken about going to Santorini... eventually. She didn't know when that trip was happening but a trip with Mel sounded incredible. "I'd love too that'd be amazing. Is it a girl's trip or is it girls with plus ones too?" Seriously it would be. And then the zippy excited state of Vi Holden came to a crashing halt when Melbourne mentioned the dreaded "g" word. Graduation.

"Oh come on.. That's two years off," began Vi before she stopped herself. Mel was right. It really was next year. She gulped. "Wow. A year away... Well that's plenty of time to make everything count now." And all the more reason to talk to a certain curly haired Prefect about things. Mhm.. Things. People kept asking questions and Vi kept on being awkward. She didn't know how to answer such questions anyway nor did she want to tell a fib and say something that wasn't true.

Little did the man know, but Dora was already in the igloo... sitting cross legged, her wand lit, an apple in the other hand, a book on her lap. Her eyes were definitely focused on the book at the moment, but when she heard the FAVORITE PROFESSOR of life speaking, Dora turned her attention upward.

"Professor! Hey! Want to sit with me a while, sir?" GOSH he was so weird, Dora LOVED it! This was like the happiest that the girl had been in the month that she had been there. Weird, right? Something about the feathered fat man just lifted her spirits. And he was eating peanuts...was he going to share?

Crunch, crunch... Crunch? Haraldur stopped chewing on his peanuts and turned his head towards a very familiar voice. "Miss Umbridge! Well, hello there!" He hadn't seen her. Maybe, partly because of his tunnel vision to reach a cool, icy bench.

"Of course, of course." No way was he standing up any time soon.
EXHAUSTION. And he liked the company of this Gryffindor. She could share his bench. "Reading anything interesting?" He asked, peeking over at the book in her lap. Meanwhile, he rattled the bag of peanuts close to her face. She had taken some last term when he offered so he supposed she liked them. Well, how could she not, peanuts were among the greatest things on earth.

Yes, miss Umbridge. You may have some.

The man gained himself a huge smile, one of genuine value... which he should count himself lucky to have because she didn't seem to be sparing many of those lately. Yeah. Again, the feathered fat man... errr... pleasantly plump pheasant feathered man brought a sense of peace to her. Aces, he was!

Scooting a bit so he could join her, the Gryffindor marked her page and closed the cover. Resting her half eaten apple on her lap she shoved her hand in the bag and grabbed out some yummy peanuts. "It's a book of fairy tales. Written in Mermish." Did he read Mermish? She had been fluent for years. Well before it became the IN thing to do. Ahem. "How has your term been so far, sir? And please... call me Dora." They could totally be on a more casual level now that she ate food from him, right?

She'd been right! Not that Emmeline was surprised, really. She figured only a Ravenclaw could really like the boring parts of history, and Professor Marchand taught History of Magic. So she supposed it was kinda obvious. Still, she tilted her head to the side a little and wondered out loud: "Is Cami--I mean, uh, Professor Stewart, the only teacher who went to Hogwarts and wasn't in Ravenclaw?" She knew that Cami had been in Gryffindor like her, which was kinda cool. Even if Emmeline thought Houses were only for fun -- winning the House Cup last term had been super fun, and it was cool kinda competing with the other Houses and stuff. She nodded at Professor Marchand's boxes comment and said, "Uh huh. I think the Houses are just fun. Y'know, earning points and competing and stuff." Hogwarts seemed SUPER big on competition, mhm. What with IMPS and the House Cup and stuff like that.

She frowned a little, 'cause she was still a bit confused. "Uh huh, but what about in defense of others? 'Cause he makes the other Professor Marchand sad and that's not okay either." Honestly, if the professor's father ever turned up at Hogwarts for some reason, Emmeline wasn't sure she'd be able to NOT hex him. She knew her Charms professor's pain all too well. She grinned at the mention of dueling club, though. Since she was a member, she totally knew allll about that. "Mmmhmm, people use loads of GROSS spells in dueling club too. Eddie made me puke slugs allll over the place last term." Which actually seemed kinda funny now that it was over; she made a mental note to ask Eddie to teach her that spell later.

Emmeline frowned again and went on, "But he HAS to be a werewolf. He's allll sad and tired and stuff around every full moon. How else d'you explain that?" Professor Marchand was obviously still trying to cover for her husband, mhm. But Emmeline wasn't gonna be dissuaded that easily.

Another interesting question that Rosalyn had never been asked before. "Oh, no. Minus Professors Hirsch, Baldvinsson, and Marchand, as well as the Headmistress, who went to other schools, there have been professors who have been in other Houses." She didn't think it hurt any to elaborate on the point further, and show that they weren't being taught by only Ravenclaws - an assumption that she didn't think was TOO unreasonable to make given their reputation. Of course if Emmeline wanted to know further into things, she could ask. In fact Rosalyn had went to school with a number of people on staff. "Oh, yes. Houses ARE a lot of fun. I certainly liked competing at times when I was a student." Not that she was the most competitive person or anything; but it could make things a lot more interesting!

Oh dear. It looked like she wasn't getting what she had wanted to say across clear enough. "Well, it's certainly important to defend people, and there are times when you are right in thinking that force is needed... but that's more in life or death situations. When it's something like what happened, there are better ways to deal with things. You can still defend the person, but you can stick up for them with words." But yes, Emmeline WAS right in saying that defending people COULD get physical. It just wasn't a solution that should be jumped at unless absolutely necessary. "Ugh, that sounds very unpleasant. You were like Ron Weasley then at least." Since he had been made to spew slugs once as well. Still, that must have been very unpleasant.

Honestly Rosalyn couldn't say much about the full moon stuff because she didn't pay attention to it. "He was sad all the time back then because of the stuff with his father." Of course she wasn't going to get into more detail with that since it wasn't appropriate to. "Maybe it just seemed that way to you two and I can certainly understand why you would come to that conclusion." When she had been their age, she very well might have wondered the same exact thing. It was a bit hard to say since that had been a long time ago.

While she helped herself to some peanuts, Haraldur examined the book cover. He wasn't really into fairytales and didn't know mermish at all. So it intrigued him. "I never did learn mermish." It wasn't a very popular subject at Durmstrang and he actually avoided classes all together when he was in school. Something he of course didn't share with his students. "I didn't mean to interrupt, just... Catching some fresh air." Fresh as in ice ice baby cold air.

"The beginning of term has been quite eventful but of course, a lot calmer this year than last." Those Ilvermorny kids had brought a lot of trouble with them. "How are you Miss-" He interrupted himself and shot her a small smile. "Dora. How is your final year coming along?" She seemed distracted when he'd bumped into her earlier around school but then again, NEWTs had a way of distracting the 7th years.

She winked, continuing the ruse.

Vi was great. ”Oh, darling you can keep me as long as you want” Mel joked back to her roommate even winking her grin was sparklingly bright and happy because really, that’s what Vi did. She was just fun. No wonder Ace liked her – yeah?

Mel shrugged at the ministry comment and dramatically sighed, ”I’ve honestly started thinking about like…being a private investigator? I mean…its better than all of the paperwork I did this summer” she shrugged and tipped her head at her with a sly grin. ”you have to come for part of it – I mean, at least for the portion where we planned on going to Adelaide and Melbourne” she grinned knowing full well that Vi would get where she was speaking of. ”I know, its still a while away but we’ll be great and have loads of fun!” she meant it.

Really, Mel honestly thought that.
