Another History of Magic Lesson…and Cassie made sure to give herself enough time to grab her textbook and such and make it back to the First Floor. She had nearly been late to a lesson yesterday and she didn’t want a repeat performance. In truth as she stepped into the doorway for the classroom, she realized she might have given herself too much time, or she was off totally, for as she took note of the interior, it appeared as if she was the first one there.

Would you look at that?!

“Good day, Professor Marchand,” she greeted the woman with a smile. It certainly was for herself and the professor didn’t seem to be having a bad day either. Moving further inside, Cassie opted for a seat near one of the open windows, grateful for the sunlight that came through it and added a touch of warmth to the still slightly cool surroundings. The girl grabbing a some fruit juice before settling in and getting out her parchment and quill to be ready to go.

Zoryn did NOT want to be here and her face practically said it all. Even the snacks couldn't bribe her and in all honesty, Zoryn kinda thought it was a little pathetic. Of course most of the time the Gryffindor had trouble keeping thoughts to herself, however, even she knew that these ones wouldn't be welcomed. Ahem.

Instead, the Gryffindor walked in and greeted her Professor. She was tryiiiiiing to be friendly enough. (((((Even though History of Magic was like the most useless lesson EVER and she wasn't actually gonna need it in the real world ANDDDDDD she always fed her notes to the Whomping Willow anyways))))). "Hi Professor Newton," there could and would only ever be one Professor Marchand. No offense.

"Can we take a break from history today and watch movies instead?"

Worth a shot.

History of Magic class time!

It was bright and sunny (and still cold--- unfortunately) but at least it was sunny. Entering the classroom, Vi noticed that she was early and saw only two other students and Professor Marchand present. She gave Cassie and Zoryn a nod and smile. And the Professor had a cup of coffee there. Ooh yes. That smelled VERY good. She had been a big fan of coffee. "Hello Professor Marchand! Coffee smells good. What kind do you have?" she asked with a wide grin. Yes, that did smell good indeed. The smell of freshly brewed coffee... delicious. It was making her hungry so she happily grabbed an apple from the table.

As usual, Sam avoided the snacks available and head straight for her seat. She'd had more than enough for breakfast, and had somewhat over-indulged on cookies last night in the hope that it might help alleviate her homesickness. Lesson learnt: it didn't. They had been rather yummy though, so there was that.

Unpacking her parchment and quill from her bag, Sam gave a small smile at their teacher. History of Magic made her think of her brother at home, who she was missing a lot, so it was a kiltered reaction. "Good morning, Professor Marchand."

Daisy walked into the classroom, not desiring any refreshments. "Good morning, Professor Marchand," she greeted as she made her way to a seat and grabbed the necessary supplies from her schoolbag.

"I'm with Zoryn on that one."

Jessa had entered the class just as the Gryffindor had given what she thought to be a wonderful suggestion. As a whole, History of Magic was dull. Its essays, all the dates and events to be remembered through blocks and blocks of text that needed to be read, the whole nine yards. If you asked her, today was much too nice a day to be stuck in the classroom having the same old History lesson.

"Doesn't even have to be based on real life." Because yes, for today, the Ravenclaw was okay with not learning.

If not a movie, then she'd at least hoped the Professor would for once let them carry on a debate. In lessons like these, Jessa required some form of external stimulation to keep her attention span focused on the lesson and it helped to get differing view points--at the risk of them not agreeing. People didn't always agree, that was life. In fact, that was the cause of absolutely every war that was ever started. Wars and rebellions they were now forced to learn about.

Keeping it light today, the 15 year old took only a few fruits before heading to her seat where she awaited what would no doubt be an unfavourable response. It wasn't usual for Professors to deviate from what they had planned. Something like that was probably the end of the world for them.

Patrick wasn't exactly sure what to expect this time considering they had recreated the great battle last time. On one hand he was always interested in the history of the wizarding world in Europe since he had learned so much about American wizarding history with his brothers growing up. He picked a seat and sat down quietly not really awake yet, he'd give the juice a try before he really woke up. "Morning professor," he mumbled pouring himself a cup of juice. He had decided an extra ten minutes of sleep instead of breakfast.

History of Magic was MOSTLY an okay subject; at least in the fact that she understood it and was able to do well. It wasn't as logical as subjects such as Runes or Arithmancy, mostly detailing the memorization of facts and yet still it was okay enough. Another bonus? It was only located on the first floor which meant not too far from the slytherin common room.

Which also meant, she was able to sneak down to her dorm after Mermish class for a quick power nap before History started. The only thing? Why did Roselyn Newton Marchand insist on drinking coffee but only providing JUICE for them? They weren't five years old and to be honest, as an owl student, she found herself in dire need of caffeine and sugar to keep her alert and oriented. And no, Daisy Carden, she had no issues with flying even with consuming caffeine, so your myths are just that. At least the sunlight streaming into the classroom was good at keeping her alert.

"Hello Professor Marchand," Could she say, female Marchand? Cause this duplicating surname thing was confusing. Also, she totally took a seat near the front. Because, focus and alertness were of essence.

Kirk arrived fairly early to the next lesson. History had it's perks, while it wasn't his strongest subject, he had a good grasp on things lately. Once he arrived he first took notice on the bright day. It must be a good day then, as a cheerful feeling engulfed him. "Hello, Professor." He greeted. Juice and fruits? He supposed he could munch on an apple in the mean time, adding in "Thanks for this." Before grabbing a nice green one before finding a spot to reside at.

It never failed to make the Hufflepuff's stomach knot and drop when he entered a classroom and found an array of snacks and drinks laid of for students to feast upon. Which was rather unfortunate because it was nearly EVERY lesson at Hogwarts it seemed and it was somewhat terrifying. Sort of like when you got a lolly after an seeing the Healer for something that HURT. It was...sorta like...you know...Hogwarts professors were bribing, you know? But he was standing firm on his promise to Dora - NO ACCEPTING FOOD OR DRINK!

Even if his theory about hags had been ... er ... mostly disproved by this point. Besides, he had much BIGGER fish to fry.

If he actually fried fish. Which he didn't. It was just an expression.

His mind was already spiraling out of control as he made his way towards an empty seat. "Morning, professor," he mumbled with a bit more hair ruffling before taking a seat beside Daisy - whom he had become concerned about since hearing about her sleeping problems. It seemed to be....a thing in one way or another...at Hogwarts at the moment. "Hi Daisy," he smiled while beginning to set his things out, immediately opening up his textbook to the chapter on the Cult of Walpurgis to finish some reading he had started last night when he couldn't sleep.

The weather was making it awfully hard for Stasya not to want to just spend all her time outside, letting Dobby climb trees and do squirrel stuff or watch the winged horses in the paddock, but the curiosity about what they’d be discussing in History of Magic was tempting enough to convince her to make her way inside. Actually, her conflicting feelings about everything that had been going on at school lately was her reason for wanting to be outside. She felt safer outside, even if she was still staying relatively clear of the forest no matter how much she wanted to check on the unicorns. So class was a distraction.

The bright sunshine coming in through all the windows put a smile on her face as she’d walked into the classroom, greeting the professor as she found a seat not far from Olivia. “Good morning Professor Marchand!” The apples were tempting, and she may have snagged one or two that were slipped into her bag for winged horse purposes. She chose to stick with her own snack stash if she got hungry, or if anyone else did since she knew Derf didn’t eat class snacks either. And of course she sent the Hufflepuff a grin, along with Jessa, Skylar, Zoryn and everyone else she knew. But she kept herself quiet just in case. Silent greetings counted just as much as other ones.

This was one of the first times Natalie could come to class without a thick pair of socks to keep her toes warm. Spring was finally keeping her warm and she didn't need to wear her heavy robes to keep warm in the corridors.

Walking with a little spring in her step, Natalie entered the history of magic classroom and looked around until she found the familiar mop of blonde hair she was looking for. He was already sitting with someone, but the other side of him was free. With a smile, Natalie plopped down on the chair beside Derf.

"Hello," she said with a smile to the both of them.

Some students didn’t like History, but it was not a surprise that it happened to be one of Juniper’s favorite subjects. She had skipped all the way from the seventh floor. Her bag swinging at her side.

As she expected Professor Marchard, the mrs, had snacks. Snacks in the form of fruit so not too bad. She grabbed a few grapes, popped one in her mouth. ”Hello Professor.” She smiled as she passed her on the way to a seat.

Ah, here was the first arrival. Rosalyn smiled at the Ravenclaw girl. "Morning, Miss McNally," she replied cheerfully. It was nice to see her ready to go right off the bat.

Professor Newton? It had been some months since the last time a student had accidentally called her that, and she had a feeling that Zoryn was doing no such thing. Really it didn't matter too much to her if people called her by her maiden name, as some might find being Marchand confusing. For that reason she didn't make the correction and instead offered a friendly smile. "Morning, Miss Spinnet. Unfortunately no, but maybe at the end of term." No promises, but it might happen.

"Hello, Miss Holden!" Rosalyn returned the friendly greeting. Coffee? Oh, right... Some of the students DID love coffee. "It's french vanilla." And it smelled heavenly.

Another person who avoided the snacks entirely. Nothing wrong with that, as some students would have had a good breakfast beforehand. Well, the ones who woke up early enough to have the time. Jessa got a laugh from Rosalyn. "Not today, unfortunately but something could be arranged for end of term," as she had told Miss Spinnet. "I am sure that I could get hold of a nice movie to watch from Professor Stewart." She WAS the Muggle Studies professor after all so she would surely have plenty of those to choose from.

It seemed that someone wasn't fully awake yet, and Patrick got a smile. Hopefully he would be feeling more alert soon as things were going to get started soon. Maybe it would have been a good idea to offer coffee as well... Rosalyn made a note of that. "Morning, Mr Dooley."

No surprise that Derf was abstaining from any refreshments, as Rosalyn knew very well by now how he felt about them and the distrust towards professors. Honestly she couldn't blame anyone for being skeptical after certain events, namely Paul shrinking an entire class down through tea. "Morning, Mr Ashburry-Hawthorne," she said giving the boy a smile while wondering why he was mumbling. Oh well, it was of no matter surely.

"Morning, Miss Dalgaard-Volkova." Rosalyn offered the Gryffindor a smile as she took two apples. Where there was nothing wrong with that. Maybe one of them was for a horse. That, or she was just really hungry. Didn't really matter either way as there was plenty to go around and class was about to start in a couple minutes.

And it was time to begin the lesson in a moment. Just before Rosalyn got up, one last student arrived, this one seeming to be in good spirits which was ALWAYS nice to see. "Morning, Miss Primeaux." She gave the girl a smile as she took a bit of fruit and headed to her seat.

Any arrivals after this point would receive points loss, but as always Rosalyn looked around the corridor to make sure there were no stragglers before closing the door and making her way to the front of the room to address the class. "Morning everyone. I thought today we could focus on wizarding communities", cutting to the chase and all that. "To start off, I would like to ask you what you know about them. What was the purpose - or purposes - of creating them in the first place? What are some advantages and disadvantages of having them?" Just trying to see how much they knew on the subject and what they thought about them. "You can answer one or both questions if you want to."

Waiting in front of the board, she got ready to write down the answers that they gave her.

OOC: Hey, guys! Just starting off with asking a couple questions. Feel free to answer both or only one of them. I'll be moving things along in approximately 36 hours. Please remember that any arrivals after this time will result in points loss, so it's better to pretend that you have been here the entire time unless you want your character to suffer the consequences.

Jessa had returned Stasya's silent greeting with one of her own as she listened to the Professor. A movie for the end of term maybe? Could they skip to the end of term then? Yeah, she'd miss the castle and being able to do magic but it'd mean a whole bunch of vacationing, time with her friends once the summer homework was out of the way and a History of Magic class where her braincells didn't slowly die.

Definitely ready for June. Why wasn't it here yet?

"Muggles used to persecute wizards. They hunted them and made life all around difficult. The wizarding communities were like refuges where they could be among their own kind away from the threat of muggles trying to do them harm at every corner and what with the statute of secrecy being in place and all...it kinda makes it easier to keep it secret if you aren't living among them."

The people who first took the steps to separation had the right idea. She couldn't imagine any negatives coming out of something like that.

Ronan hadn't taken any refreshments from the table, not because he didn't trust the professor, but because coffee was more his jam these days. And it was a good thing he hadn't, because this was a topic that he could get quite riled up about, and as proven in certain classes, things tended to 'fly' when he got riled up.

"Honestly, the whole idea sounds extremely stupid to me. If Kit-" ahem "certain people get their way and the Statue of Secrecy is repealed, then muggles are going to come after us. And they're not stupid. They would eventually figure out that we've formed rather sizable communities, find them and attack. Hundreds of witches and wizards would die and for what?

Our best option is to hide in plain sight. Live amongst the muggles and blend in as much as possible. And I don't mean give up magic completely, of course not. Just use it when we absolutely need it, like to defend ourselves against fellow wizards and such." Yeah, he knew that wasn't a very popular opinion, but it seemed like it was the best way to survive to him. Forming magical communities just seemed like the quickest way to their destruction.

Another thought occurred to him just then. "Also, say the psycho behind all the ransackings, blood paintings and Howlers this term," and they all knew who he was talking about here "suddenly decides that their message isn't getting through and they need a bigger target. Well, a Wizarding community is perfect for that, because they could do anything they wanted practically without breaking the Statute." Chilling thought that.

Etta absently played with the ends of her hair, feeling extremely distracted because of all the weird happenings in the castle lately. They still didn’t know WHY it was happening or who/what was responsible for it.. she was lost in her thoughts for a while when the professor spoke. She tried to pay attention, deciding to stress about things that were beyond her control until later.

“Well, the main advantage is that it helps people of the wizarding kind to be comfortable and safe among other wizards. Muggles aren’t open to the idea of magic and the Statute doesn’t allow for magic to be revealed to the Muggle community anyway. So it’s better this way.”

Patrick looked side to side as each student spoke up. He got where they were coming from, but he had a totally different experience coming from America, specifically living in a muggle community.

"I think a lot has changed though to that point professor." He was afraid that many of the students might turn on him or start asking really harsh questions back. He sat quietly for a second, he began to speak again, "I understand that muggles aren't to know about magic, and they aren't open. However having dense populations of wizards living together isn't necessary. I lived in America, and we were pretty spread out in my area. I lived in a muggle community and we lived far enough away from our neighbors that none of the magic that occured in our house was ever discovered. But, we would often get together every few weeks and have dinner at different homes of wizards just to get together and talk all things wizarding. So I think there are advantages and disadvantages to such a thing. But I'm also 11 so I'm pretty hopeful that things can be like my community."

He shrugged his shoulders as he went back to listening to the answers of the other classmates, many of them were older than him and might have a better response to the answers than he would. It was interesting to see how people grew up and how they thought about the world considering his family was surrounded by muggles all the time since his mother was a professor at a muggle university.

Derf could already see where this was going and he glanced around the classroom apprehensively while weighing in on the questions being asked. It was also clear that Ronan was of the same thinking as him since, well, the Statute had already been thrown out there. But Derf was getting caught up a little on some of the professor's wording, namely community and...well...that was kinda a broad term, you know?

"Professor?" Derf began when it came to be his term. "Isn't...um...Hogwarts itself sorta a wizarding community. I mean...the term community just means small or large group of people who have something in common...like...you know...social norms or values or identity...so like..." He paused to ruffle his hair. "...so...um...generally speaking...isn't it always a good thing that people feel a sense of belonging?"

Just saying.

Purpose of wizarding communities? Everyone thus far seemed to be in consensus and well, where was Kitty Valentine when one needed the opposing viewpoint? Because while Skylar knew the value of wizarding communities herself, she was sure that the head girl would encourage mingling and not segregating from their muggle counterparts.

Also, yes to everything Derf said; Hogwarts was indeed a wizarding community.

Nobody really talked about any disadvantages of living in a wizarding community though; only the advantages and positives. "Wizarding communities are great, for the most part; as Derf said, you need that sense of belonging. But the disadvantage to it is that it could lead to close-mindedness ... being unaware." She could continue on with more in-depth, but surely someone would want to pick up on where she was going and to avoid repetition?

Kitty was sitting near the back of the class this time. Of course she'd said good morning like everyone else, but it was understandable if some of her classmates didn't realize she was here since her usual spot was in the front row.

All right, let's get into this! Her hand shot into the air as Professor Marchand asked the first question, ready to give her a variation of her usual dissent. But before she could even open her mouth, Ronan gave an answer perfectly designed to trigger her. And to top it all off, he even started saying her name. "Kit-" who else could that be but her???

Turning to frown at the annoying Gryffindor, the head girl directed her response to him as much as to Rosalyn. "All of us are living in a Wizarding community right now. It's our second home and I appreciate it. There are many wonderful wizarding communities. There are also many wonderful Muggle communities. While SOME people believe that Muggles are a vicious race who would kill us all if they had the chance, I know that is not true. The fact that many of us fear Muggles so much is the downside of living only in Wizarding communities. Skylar is right in saying that living in only Wizarding communities can lead to close mindedness. A popular Muggle movie series called Star Wars has a saying: 'Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering.' I won't name any names, but it is clear that some people in this very castle are deeply afraid of Muggles. The reason they're scared is because our society teaches them to be afraid. The Statute may have been useful in the past, but today all it does is create fear and division between humans - classifying us based on our blood rather than our character."

That would have been a good place to end it, but Kitty was still upset hot SOME people still seemed to think she was to blame for all the strange occurrences that year. "And yes, there are some bad Muggles and many close minded ones. But it works both ways. When I was brutally possessed and forced to write a message in blood underneath the hawk, some people accused me of being in the Cult of Walpurgis just because I disagreed with them about the Statute. I was the victim in that case, but I was accused of something that would have sent me to Azkaban if it were true. And I never did anything to the people accusing me. So I'd say there are at least as many close minded wizards as there are close minded muggles.

Contrary to her opinion, Ronan Carter did not spend all day just thinking of ways to provoke Kitty. He had bigger fish to fry, like his rapidly approaching OWLS. Besides, he hadn't even seen the Cultist until she decided to pipe up and spew her bull manure. So, yes she needed to get over herself and quick.

"Yes, and look what is happening in said 'community' right now. Things are being destroyed, rooms ransacked, blood, actual blood, staining the walls, at least some of it done by your own hand Valentine.

Also, all you have to do is look back through history, muggle history, to see how they have treated those who are different from them. The Holocaust, for example. Six million Jews murdered and for what? Nineteen fifties America, where African-Americans were told that they couldn't go certain places just because of the color of their skin. The way LGBTQ people have been treated, cast out from their own families just because of who they love." His voice caught on that last one, not because it had happened to him, but because of the very thought. "And let's not forget the most relevant to all of us in this room, the witch trials. So, yes, muggles need to be treated with caution."

Natalie's eyes were wide and full of fear and concern about the conversation at hand. The professor had asked about wizarding communities and then the head girl and some boy were... attacking each other. And he was blaming her for all the things that were happening at school? But she was the Head Girl! Why would she do all these things?

Class had started like, two minutes ago and there was already gonna be a fight? Errrmmm... could she hide under the desk? This Slytherin didn't like confrontation, even if it wasn't hers.

Natalie raised her hand timidly to try and add a break in the tension. "I think they're nice because we can use magic for everything and not have to worry about getting caught by muggles..." Because muggles really seemed to think magic was freaky.

It was clear that they couldn't have a simple debate in lesson any more. Why did people have to shoot everyone down and not listen to everyone's opinions. It was not good. She got that everyone would have different opinions but there was being nice and listening to people. Clearly some students needed to learn or relearn what manners were, because they were severely lacking in them right now.

Hattie shook her head and put her hand into the air. "I think wizarding communities are good. They provide us safety and a place where we can use our magic, and not have to hide" which was good. She didn't want to learn all this magic for nothing. "I mean.....we shouldn't have to hide. We have as much right to live here as they do.... but I guess it just makes things easier?"
