Ravenclaw The Ravenclaw Nest

Once you've solved the bronze knocker's riddle, you enter a circular, comfortable looking common room. The common room always has a well-lit and airy look about it, mostly due to the fact that the arched windows that are covering a large section of the walls, stretch from the floor and all the way up to the domed ceiling. The ceiling reflects the midnight blue carpet that's dotted with stars and spreads across the common room. Look closely and you might notice one or two of these stars twinkling at you, especially during the darker hours.

Everything from the walnut furniture to the blue and bronze silks that drape over the windows seem to scream Ravenclaw. Take a look outside of the window and you'll find yourself facing the most magnificent view that Hogwarts has to offer: the grounds stretch out as far as the eye can see, with the lake, Herbology greenhouses and Quidditch pitch meeting your eye. Meeting the lake is the Forbidden Forest itself and beyond the forest lies an excellent view of the surrounding mountains. Near the windows are blue window seats, large enough for two or three people to sit on.

Dotted around the common room are various objects you'd often find in your everyday common room. Soft chairs, armchairs and sofas are dotted here and there, some accompanied by a table or two. The softest of these pieces of seating furniture can be found near the fireplace on one side of the common room. The most notable and unique object that stands here is the statue of Rowena Ravenclaw who's standing between the two staircases leading up to the dormitories.

So come in and make yourselves comfortable while you're at it. This is your home, after all.

The evening was wearing on but for the first time in over a week, the Ravenclaw felt she was finally making headway.

Remarkably, she'd found a book on gene splicing somewhere high up the shelves of the Ravenclaw library. When Professor Hirsch said it was diverse, he wasn't kidding, Merlin! Since finding it, this spot on the rug had become her go to place while she sifted through all the information. It was admittedly a little harder to digest without an ACTUAL subject to follow along with while she read but nothing to be done about that just yet.

Blue eyes floated from one side of the page to the other, methodically stacking away what she could.

At some point, she would need to have a word with the CoMC Professor....Professor Meyers too but she'd have to wait for Lexa to get back to her regarding that dragon reserve. Waiting was hard.

He had been up since the crack of dawn and as he stepped into the Common Room after his final patrol, passing the baton onto one of the Gryffindor's, Rooney rubbed at his eyes before yawning. He had existed throughout August leisurely and the harsh reality of being back at school in a serious exam year had taken it's toll on the Ravenclaw. It usually did for the first few weeks of the school year and then his energy levels kicked in and he was up all hours of the night and back up at dawn with his head in a textbook. Much like he found Miss Jessa on that evening.

"I'm sure I keep reliving the same day over and over, Miss Jessa Cambridge. Have you moved from that spot at all?" He could tell that she had. The pattern on the rug was a telltale sign of where one had been sitting if you paid close enough attention and the girl was at least half an inch away from where she had been the last time Rooney was sure he had seen her.

Despite being as tired as he was, he sat down beside her and took a look at the book she was draped over. "Fun?"

People coming and going from the Common Room was quite the norm. As a result, it didn't typically garner a reaction from her, not unless the in or outflow that day was particularly note worthy. Consequently the new arrival flew right by her...that is, until the voice and the sound of her own name yanked her from her book.

Her gaze shot upward and the widest of grins slipped into her expression. The girl's gaze was bright as she took in her Prefect. Hands down, Ravenclaw had the best one, there was no competition there. "Rooney! Hi!" Jessa scooted some, offering him more space to relax on the rug because given the time he'd just gotten back to the Common Room, he must have been SO exhausted.

Only the smallest glances was spared down at her book at the mention of it.
"Well, not entirely fun, no. In fact there's a couple books I'd rather be reading but this one's important because I wanna make my own dragon!" The statement was a bold one, giving no indication that she may have been kidding--because she wasn't. "Only a very small one, one that stays small so no one will tell me I can't have it."

She took a look at the tired one. "How was your patrol?"

Out of habit, Roo leaned his head on Jessa's shoulder so that she couldn't see him closing his eyes as she talked. It was something he did often with anyone he spoke to when he was sleepy, or when he was being needy and had the urge to meow at them. Liv was the main person who got the meowing, usually because she embarrassed him and made him have to hide his face in her hair. He responded with a few 'mhm' and 'sounds great' as she spoke, trying to offer her his attention whilst he tried to honestly take in all that she was saying. At least it wasn't an overspill of information like the Arithmancy classes from last year -- now that had been too much for anyone to take in and understand without needing three and a half years to process it all.

"Wait -" He moved to sit back up, opening his eyes and looking at the younger Ravenclaw. "You want to make your own dragon? Like..birthing a fire-breathing creature?" Or was he just tired and she had said something that sounded like dragon? Did anything sound like dragon?

"It was alright. I caught some Gryffindors trying to head outside but let their Prefects deal with them. I needed peace." And sleep.

Ohai, Rooney getting comfy on her shoulder. Jess didn't mind. Rooney was super duper nice and she bet if she was tired he'd have let her do the same thing. THAT was the kind of person he was, no convincing her otherwise.

She wasn't certain how much comfort such a scrawny shoulder would offer but the young girl did her best to sit still and upright so he wouldn't end up straining his neck. Thankfully, her words sent him shooting right back up because his question had her nodding her head and bouncing about where she sat with new found enthusiasm. That couldn't have been too comfy for him. "Mhm!--Well, I wouldn't be birthing it, I'd be hatching from an egg. Derf's got fireseeds to help us keep it nice and toasty and my sister's got a cousin who works at a Dragon Reserve--hatchery division, what're the odds????"

"I just need to figure how to mix it with regular lizard DNA so it doesn't grow too big and 'dangerous'."

Also, how cool was Rooney for going around and busting Castle crime? He was like...the Hogwarts version of an Auror, which kinda made him all the more cool. "Did you find out where they were going? My friend Clarissa says sometimes older kids sneak out to do experiments, but she also said they're the kind they won't let me join. I didn't get it," Because why withhold knowledge when they could learn together? "but she said we could do our own experiments."

Stuck inside with Sirius | *Splish-Splash* | bamBAM | ☁ Spooktacular ☁

On the opposite side of the fire to Jessa and Rooney, and sat with her legs tucked under one of the coffee tables, Sam gently ran the feather of quill back and forth against her chin. A hefty History of Magic textbook lay open in front of her, along with a parchment covered in attempt at mind-mapping the structure of her essay. It wasn't going well; the many people and places and dates involved were just a blur in her mind, and she was struggling to sift through all the relevant parts. How did this stuff come so easily to her brother?

She had a few more days to work on it, but really didn't wanted to waste her weekend staring at this. She had better things to be doing; people to hang out with. But for tonight, she was done. She rubbed her eyes tiredly, and stretched as she lent back against the sofa.

Jessa's topic of conversation now piqued her interest, although she didn't say anything just yet. A little dragon, huh? Sounded pretty awesome.

Lorelei, after finally solving the riddle given by the door knocker, stepped into the common room and once again looked around in awe. It was quite a beautiful room, with plenty of books to keep her mind occupied both when doing homework and when engaging in some leisurely reading. She nodded at the other students who were there already, then went over to look out of the window. It was truly a magnificent view; she wondered why her father had never mentioned this aspect of Hogwarts when he was regaling her with various tales of his own school days.

After a moment or two, Lorelei made her way over to a nearby table and sat down. She already had a load of homework to do, but she didn't mind. All she cared about was making her parents proud of her with her good marks.

Miss Jessa Cambridge was most definitely a peculiar one, but Rooney couldn't fault her interest levels and the drive to come through with the research to enhance her learning. This Ravenclaw was proud of that Ravenclaw and expected only good things in her future. Perhaps she would one day stand in his team when he ran for Minister. Perhaps she would one day run for Minister herself. Perhaps she would even be receive a Damehood in the Muggle world from the Royal family for one of her discoveries. The brain of a Ravenclaw was one of the most magnificent things, especially when you were able to watch it develop over the years - he was only slightly sad that he wouldn't witness the rest of Jessa's growth as a thinker.

"Have you talked this over with the necessary professors? Care of Magical Creatures? Hirsch, if you're going to have it with you in the common room? Hawthorne, if it's in the castle? Miss Jessa, must you do everything on such a grand scale?" They didn't need a dragon loose in the castle so soon after a monster, honestly. And he most certainly didn't want to have to step up and do something to ruin the fun for this younger student. She reminded him of Brinlee, had Brinlee been able to put two thoughts together in a literal sense and not an insult.

With a laugh, he gave her a nudge with his elbow. "No experiments or sneaking out after curfew, Cambridge. I'll have you put in detention. A week for every second past curfew." A mere minute would put her in detention well into her fifth year.

"Okay, tell me what you've learned from your book so far."

Rooney wasn't oblivious to the others in the common room, he was tired..yes. He raised a hand when he noticed Sam, giving her a wave and a friendly smile, that he hoped suggested that she was welcome to join he and Jessa over here if she wanted. There was room for all over on this rug with Jessa's crazy dragon plans.

"Okay, tell me what you've learned from your book so far."

"But that's just it, Roo!" She enthused, a half crazed glint in those sparkling blue eyes. "I'd mentioned getting a baby dragon to Clarissa and she was on about how dangerous it would be--then it hit me....what if...it wasn't dangerous?" Was he following where this was going? 'Cause she was getting excited all over again just thinking about it. "Imagine it, a dragon that never grows anywhere near as large as a real dragon, not as vicious as a real dragon--one that's possibly only similar in appearance and a few behaviours. Don't you think it'd be neat????" Of course he did. Didn't everyone?

"It probably won't grow taller than my knee cap if I do it right." She continued, finally reigning in her enthusiasm by some degree. The realization that she would need a lot more approval than she'd originally thought was all the more of a damper on the shiny eyed eagerness she'd sported just now.

Slowly her brows began to knit themselves together, giving her a look resembling that of someone perplexed by the topic of discussion. "It's still only in the initial stages. I don't even have a komodo dragon egg to work on or the dragon DNA or anything." In fact she was still on the stage of figuring out if it could be done, hence not asking for permission yet. It was an experiment waaaay up in the pipeline. Those brows evened out before arching up in a look of feigned shock. "Would you really lock me away that long??? How will I continue my experiments in ther--what's detention like?" Come to think of it...she had no idea.

Noting Rooney's minor shift in attention, Jessa also looked about the common room. Didn't take long to spot Sam sitting over there. She mirrored her Prefect, giving the girl a friendly wave before turning to him again. Yes, the enthusiasm was back. "So far I've learned that I'll need an unfertilized egg and I'll need someone to separate the good things I wanna keep about dragons. It's all very complicated and I'll likely have to get huge professional help for the technical parts."

She hadn't meant to necessarily join them; bed should probably be on the agenda soon-ish. She needed to be alert in potions first thing the following morning. But it was an intriguing topic, and they had waved her over, so curiosity won and Sam had soon shuffled over to join the Head Boy on the rug.

"Aren't komodos kinda...big?" Sam asked after a little while. Maybe not more than a kneecap high, but certainly more than a person long. Didn't seem very miniature to her, or for that matter, practical. "...and for that matter, kinda aggressive? I mean, I'm all for a new House pet, and a baby dragon sounds awesome, but..." Something that big only gave her painful visions of smouldering books and broken furniture.

"What about mixin' the dragon DNA with a salamander instead? Better temperament, smalleh, and they can re-grow lost legs." The latter of which was pretty cool, and would maybe mean that their cells would be more amenable to taking on dragon traits? Just a thought, she hadn't actually done any reading on the subject.

A week for every second? That was some threat, and Sam looked at the Head Boy to ascertain quite how serious he was about it. "Depends on the Professor you're stuck with, so I've 'eard."

It was nice to see Jessa so into something, no matter how ridiculous he thought the idea was. He knew that she was one of those students that went well into everything when she wanted to look at it and she reminded him much of himself in that sense. Every ounce of research was done. Every second of consideration accounted for. All of that was stuff he would do, and did do, if he was interested in learning about something. So Rooney gave her the time to talk, and he just listened. His reasoning behind that was that he was also slightly interested, but trying to stay awake as best as possible. Could he shift and lay his head on her leg? Take a nap right here? Was that normal? No one would know.

"I think if it's executed right...it would be okay. But...you know how easy things can go wrong with magic, Jessa. Creatures are as temperamental as that, despite it all being DNA based." But..it was a good start. "You could totally do all of your research now and develop this at university level, Jessa. It would make for an excellent research project." Especially if she was still this dedicated to it at that point. He didn't know if she would study that subject when it came to uni though. Heck, he knew that choices related to university were virtually impossible. He was still struggling.

They were joined by Sam then, and Rooney listened to the points that she was making too as he fought off the tiredness. His head lulled back against the bookshelves nearby and he just let his eyes close briefly as he listened to the discussion between the two girls. "I've never had detention." He added, completely distracted and a few moments after the detention chat had happened.

Goody goody.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

That......was actually a very good point. Not the big part, as she was fine with something growing safely to the size of her knee cap even if from tip to tail it would be way longer--anything not spanning a couple floors of the castle would have been deemed a success for her. The point Sam had was the aggression. Half the reason Jessa had thought to make her own dragon in the first place WAS because of the innate aggression most real dragons possessed that left them marked XXXXX and highly dangerous. No one would allow her to keep that. She'd wanted a dragon she could keep afterwards.

The girl fell silent, pensive in that moment. She supposed she hadn't really taken the smaller reptiles temperament into consideration when she'd first had the idea. "That might be able to work...yeah." She mused aloud, turning the idea over and over in her mind. "It'd reduce it's possible size even further but I don't suspect that would be too much of an issue." The smaller it was, was the more likely she'd be able to convince anyone in charge to let her keep it. "Won't lie, it being able to regrow legs would come in handy too depending."

Blue eyes shifted over to Rooney who was obviously beginning to give in to his fatigue. It must have been a long patrol shift and in truth it was getting pretty late. A part of her wanted to nudge him back into an upright position as she valued his opinions highly and thought his input would be CRUCIAL here.

Not gonna lie, she did deflate a little at the mention of University and it showed in her expression. "You don't think I can get it done before then?" Not by herself, certainly not, but she'd been prepared to enlist professionals where she could. For a 13 year old, the prospect of waiting until she'd gotten to a level at University that allowed for such study was both daunting and discouraging.

Sam's response to the talk of detention drew her from her own disappointment. "Oh? Do some Professors give.....not terrifying detentions?" Jessa thought to ask Rooney but then he'd just said he'd never gotten one, which pretty much ruled him out as a primary source. "Have you ever gotten one?" The girl seemed to know something of the subject, maybe she had.

"I wasn't thinking literally about re-growing legs," Sam commented as Jessa's musing aloud took a pause. "I mean, sure, it's 'elpful if cat goes chasing after it or somefink, but I mean like...it means there's an inbuilt mechanism feh repairing stuff, not just individual cells, right? And that might help with the..." She struggled for the right word. Breeding? Engineering? Growing? "Well, jus' the process of getting a mini dragon."

And Rooney's points were definitely important. But what struck her was the mention of doing this sort of thing university. Sam looked at Rooney curiously. She knew Dora wanted to go to university after leaving Hogwarts, and that's Dora's Uncle Spike worked as a Herbologist at one in London, but she herself had no real intentions to go. She wasn't actually sure that she knew anyone that had gone, and as a result, was clueless as to what happened there.

Honestly, she was clueless about her future after Hogwarts full stop. She wasn't going into her Pa's business, that was for sure, but other than that? She was good at learning, thrived at it, even. Merlin, she couldn't even read when she came to Hogwarts. But one couldn't make a living from learning, could they? And she was good in her classes, but there was nothing she really excelled at. Not one subject she could really put a finger on and say I want to do this.

She should probably do something about that.

The mention of detention brought Sam back from her thoughts, and Sam shook her head. "Can't say I have. I think they're all pretteh bad, but some are worse than others. Depends on the deed and the professeh. Heard about one guy having to lick the dungeons walls clean." Which was just plain gross.

Giving a squeeze to Jessa's shoulder, Rooney shrugged. "I didn't say that you couldn't get it done. Just that it would be an excellent research project with the equipment available to you at a university level. And you'd be able to do more of it yourself. More credit that way." But he hadn't meant to upset her or hurt her feelings at all.. Perhaps it was time for him to go to bed if he was hurting those around him just by saying his thoughts. This was slowly becoming a habit of his...

"I heard about that one too!" He offered, finishing his sentence up with a yawn and a rub of his face. It was definitely time for this seventh year to get to bed and hopefully avoid Mason and Chris discussing whatever it was they were going to be discussing tonight. He had an early morning patrol tomorrow, so he didn't want to be exhausted when it came to it.

Stretching his arms up in the air, Roo smiled at the two girls sat with him. "Ladies, unfortunately I'm going to have to love and leave you. Slumber calls."
