Default Office of Professor Gaston Marchand

Once invited into Professor Marchand's office, the first thing you'll notice is a plaque bearing the likness of the Disney character who shares his name attatched to the door as a joke for the students' enjoyment. The room itself is decorated with blue walls and several black leather chairs. Two potted pink bleeding heart plants hang suspended from the ceiling. On one wall is a bookshelf containing various books on charms theory and application, as well as a few classic French novels. If you'd like to read one, Professor Marchand would be happy to lend it to you. All you have to do is ask!

In the middle of the room is a dark-colored wooden desk where you'll normally find Professor Marchand seated. On the desk, in addition to the usual quills and parchment, is an ipod dock that may or may not be blasting punk rock music when you walk in and a glass candy dish full of fancy French chocolates. Please help yourself to a few!

Behind Professor Marchand is a shelf full of models of classic cars. Please DON'T touch the cars, thank you very much! You'll also see a cat condo where Professor Marchand's black and white cat, Phantom, can usually be found napping. If you're lucky, she may even let you pet her!

So have a seat and make yourself at home!

OOC: please make sure you've posted in the Seating Area first and have been told to enter by Professor Marchand or me. You may play the cat if you wish, but please don't play the professor!

Default Phone post... sorry if it stinks

He sighed, trying to will his mind not to wander back to the events of the summer, to that fight with his father and its aftermath.

A knock - or rather, three knocks at the door jerked him out of his sad thoughts before he could become too lost in them, and he tapped his ipod with his wand to turn it off. That must be Miss Umbridge; he'd been expecting her. His heart sank; he was almost dreading this meeting. Oh well, he couldn't avoid her forever! He opened the door and greeted the girl with a small smile, though his eyes were still sad. "Hello, Miss Umbridge. Thank you for coming," he said, opening the door a bit wider. "Please come in, have a seat."

OOC: You may post in the office now.
Dora had hopped up as soon as the professor's door had opened. She didn't have a sense of dread... or anything really. She hadn't been back long enough to do anything wrong!! Or had she?

No. Nothing sprang to mind.

Maybe he was just wondering how her summer had been? He WAS her new Head of House, after all. And no, she wasn't sure the man was Gryffindor material... yet. THIS WAS SINK OR SWIM TIME, BRO!

Giving the Charms Prof a small smile she stepped past him and inside the office before she spoke. "I couldn't exactly deny my Head of House a meeting now could I? " she offered lightly, even adding a small laugh to boot. Perhaps she could put the seemingly anxious man at ease?

Doubtful. The Umbridge kids didn't tend to put much of anyone at ease, really. Sad, that was. They were both lovely children. Obviously. ...not that many people knew the other half of the twins anyway.

Whatever.

The blonde let her eyes sweep the room as she made her way to a chair. "So what's up, sir? Did I do something wrong? I haven't set A N Y T H I N G on fire. I haven't even spoken to people I don't like. Or maybe I WON something? Did I win something Professor Marchand? Is it money? Or an award of some kind? For my awesomeness? "

Yeah. She was rambling a bit, but MERLIN this was more than a little awkward, wasn't it?! Finally the blonde clamped her mouth shut and WAITED for the man to explain.

It would totally be awesome if she had won something though.

For real.

He wasn't expecting anybody else!

He rose with a sigh, once again turning off his enchanted ipod with his wand. He opened the door, and his expression brightened a little when he saw Mr. Bronwyn in the seating area reaading a magazine. He cleared his throat quietly to announce his presence without startling the boy. "Hello, Mr. Bronwyn," he greeted him. "What can I do for you?"

OOC: Go ahead and post in Gaston's office whenever you're ready.
With a smile upon hearing his name, Rooney stood up with he magazine he was reading and tucked it back where it had been before. No mention at all of his mother or Aunt on the pages of the publication. A good thing, no doubt. Mother said that no news was good news. Even though Rooney didn't believe that in the slightest. His smile widening, Roo made his way into the office of Professor Marchand and shuffled towards a seat. "Just some advice, Sir. I was wondering if you could look over some university things with me? My applications begin in the next two months and I still have so many questions."

Number one being what course he was taking, given that he was torn between Charms and Herbology right now.

So. Much. Stress.

Gaston took a deep breath as he followed Miss Umbridge into his office and closed the door behind him. So far, so good. The girl had greeted him politely and even smiled at him. Did he dare to hope she might forgive him? Maybe this would go better than he thought. "Fair point, Miss Umbridge," he said with a slight chuckle, though he wouldn't have been surprised if she'd denied him, Head of House or not.

He took his seat in the larger leather chair on the opposite side of the desk, and no sooner that he had that the black-and-white Persian cat laying on the cat condo behind him looked up, eyes darting from him to the Gryffindor girl,
with an inquisitive meow. He gave her a little pat on the head but not much;
he had other matters to attend to right now.

Gaston opened his mouth to explain why he'd summoned the girl, but she started rambling before he had the chance. A fresh pang of guilt gripped him.
He couldn't exactly blame her for thinking she was in trouble, but... Blink, blink. Won something? That was certainly an imaginative idea! He wished he didn't have to dash her hopes, but there was no prize he could offer her... well, except maybe some chocolate but he doubted she'd want it. He knew she had a thing about accepting food. "I'm afraid you haven't won anything, Miss Umbridge," he said, shaking his head, "but you're right on the other count. You aren't in trouble; I just wanted to..." His voice trailed off, and he nervously ran a hand through his hair. This was going to be harder than he thought.

"...to apologize again for taking points from you last term," he forced himself on. "But first I'm going to do what I should've done then and listen to what you have to say." He stiffened, sitting a little straighter as he braced for

He was going to invite the boy to sit down, but it seemed superfluous, as he was already making his way to a seat. Behind him, Phantom jumped down from her cat condo and sauntered over to the Ravenclaw prefect with a loud meow. Gaston laughed a little. He listened carefully to the reason for the boy's visit, nodding slightly. "Of course," he said. "Do you already a have a university in mind? Interested in a particular area of study?" Was he asking too many questions? Probably, but the more information he had, the better able to help he'd be.

Dora was a lot of things, but disrespectful to professors was definitely not one of them... contrary to popular belief it seemed. But Dora merely smiled and let her eyes drift to the cat. Weird. Animals typically loved her... this one seemed to be skiddish. Must be Marchand's familiar.

Heh.

And hopes weren't dashed... she hadn't REALLY thought she had won something. Honestly, she was merely filling the awkward silence with idle chat. Sheesh. There was so much awkward silence sometimes. And now as the man began to speak again she felt her furrow her brows ever so slightly. "I'm going to tread lightly here... what I have to say about you unfairly taking points from me or do you want to know why I did what I did? Sir, you'll have to be a bit more specific. I have a lot of things to say about a lot of things, to be fair. "

Really... she couldn't help but think she was being set up here. If the man disagreed with her assessment he could just take more points in the name of her being "disrespectful", right? The blonde was quickly wondering whether she should discuss this at all. Oh Merlin... could she get a do over?!

Gaston half-expected Miss Umbridge to be disappointed that she hadn't won anything, but to his relief, she didn't look it. Good, the last thing he wanted to do was give the girl more cause to dislike him! His blue eyes darted back to the black and white cat behind him in the awkward silence that followed. Phantom jumped down from her condo and walked over to the girl, looking up at her with a meow; it was almost as if she was trying to diffuse the tension.

He braced for a barrage of hurtful words, but to his surprise, none came. He wasn't sure whether he should be relieved or concerned. He'd hoped Miss Umbridge would give him another chance, but that was starting to seem unlikely. He sighed sadly. "I... I understand," he said. He couldn't exactly blame her for not wanting to open up to him. "I think I know why you did, but telling me your side of the story would be a good place to start."

A long pause followed before he was able to force himself on. "I'm sure you probably won't believe me, but I promise I won't dock points for anything you say in here." No matter how much it might hurt to hear...

Rooney dropped a hand to trail his fingers along the tail of the cat that had joined him. "Cats like me almost as much as babies do." Which was definitely true. He hadn't been supposed to have a cat for when he came to Hogwarts, but Pomegranate hadn't left his side when they went to look at animals. Therefore, the cat had joined him at the castle for every year and this was now their seventh and final year. He gave the feline a little while more of his attention, quiet and devoid of conversation with Professor Marchand before sitting back straight and fidgeting with the edge of his robes.

"Charms, Sir. That's what I'm leaning towards, anyway. No campus as of yet.." Maybe Edinburgh. To be close to Liv and make the visits to Hogsmeade easier.

"Sorry for your wait." His smile grew slightly wider at the sight of the beverage in her hand. It was nice to see her enjoying his coffee bar! His expression turned quizzical at the sight of her notebook and pens however.

"Please come in," he said, unlocking the door and opening it wide. "How can I help you?"

OOC: You may post in Goaston's office when you're ready.
Olivia grinned when she saw Professor Marchand appear. Yay! She felt like she had a million and one questions to ask but didn't wish to bombard him with all of them. She'd start slowly and work her way down the list. "Hello Professor Marchand! How are you?" she asked politely before taking a sip of the coffee in her hand. It was excellent coffee. Nice and strong. Just how she liked it. "Thank you for the coffee." The Professor totally didn't need to give students complimentary drinks but it was FANTASTIC that he did. Besides, Olivia wouldn't say no to a free cup of warm, delicious coffee. YUM.

She thanked him for opening the door and followed his lead into the office. Ah. Right. She supposed that she would need to get to the matter of hand. "Professor, I would like to learn wandless magic. I've read through a couple of books found by Mr. Kennedy and it seems difficult but I was wondering if you could provide some insight into how to learn this. Is it even possible?" she asked.

Wandless magic was something that truly amazed her and she desperately wished to learn- even if it took several hours, days, weeks, or years. She would put in the dedication to succeed at it or try and fail but she would still try. Do or do not- there is only try.

Dora's attention was immediately drawn to the feline walking toward her. YAS KITTY! COME TO DOOOORA! The blonde girl leaned over and scratched the Kitty's head softly. "Hellooool there! Oh you're so soft. Hi kitty! " she cooed excitedly. Nothing much better than animals loving on her! Yas!

But... her Head of House was speaking to her again. Focus. Lifting her head and sending her curls bouncing a bit she frowned ever so slightly. "Professor... please don't take this the wrong way because I do mean well... but why does this bother you so much? If you think you were right what does it matter what I have to say? " Stop trying to people please, sir! "You're the Gryffindor Head of House now, for better or worse. You have to start standing up for yourself and lead us by example, sir. We're a head strong lot, but if you let us... some of us... wI'll take advantage of you. Run you over. Chew you up and spit you out. This is your time to assert your dominance, Professor Marchand! "

Dora surveyed the man for a moment before speaking again, "I can totally teach you how to Gryffindor, sir. I've done it for many people. " Meaning she could teach him how to be BOLD AND BRAVE AND LOUD AND most importantly, she could teach him how to stop caring how others felt about him... or what they thought!

Gaston silently watched Phantom with Mr. Bronwyn. The little cat was flicking her tail back and forth and rubbing against the Head Boy's legs, clearly loving every minute of the attention she was getting. The comment about cats and babies made the professor laugh a little. "So I see," he said. Granted, he'd never seen Mr. Bronwyn with a baby, but if Phantom''s reaction was any indication, he'd believe it.

He sat back in his chair, patiently waiting for Phantom to stop hamming it up long enough for Mr. Bronwyn to answer his questions. He nodded, smiling slightly in reply. "Of course, I might've guessed," he said. Because it wouldn't make much sense for the boy to come to him for advice if he were interested in a different subject. "Excellent choice!" Mr. Bronwyn had always been a very promising student in his classes; he had no doubt he'd do well in a university charms program.

Gaston thought for a moment. "I must admit I know more about French university programs than English ones, so I'm not sure how much use I'll be in helping you pick a location," he went on, "though I do happen to know the university in London has a world-renowned charms program. I considered attending there myself back in the day..." He chuckled sheepishly as his voice trailed off. Why would Mr. Bronwyn ever need to know that?

Then an idea occurred to him. "Would you be interested in studying in abroad?" he asked.

Gaston returned Miss Holden's smile with a polite, though slightly sad one of his own, but his expression changed when she asked him how he was. He didn't know how to answer that question; he didn't want to lie but he didn't want to worry her either. So he gave the only answer he could. "I'm fine, thank you for asking," he said, dropping his gaze to hide the sadness in his eyes. "And you?"

He was slightly taken aback when the girl thanked him for the coffee, but he still smiled in reply. Really, she didn't have to thank him! He was happy to be able to give the students something they'd enjoy, and besides, he doubted he'd get as many visitors if he didn't provide some incentive for coming to his office. "You're very welcome, Miss Holden" he said. "Please help yourself to as much as you like."

Well Miss Holden certainly didn't waste any time in getting right to the point! Gaston had only just taken his seat in the big leather chair on the opposite side of the desk when she started talking about wandless magic. He blinked. The girl had lofty ambitions, he'd give her that! The professor thought for a moment before nodding slightly. "It is possible, but it's s skill that few wizards are able to master. It takes years - if not a lifetime - of practice," he said. "I myself still struggle with wandless magic sometimes, but I'll be glad to teach you everything I know about it." His eyes dropped. Was she going to think less of him now that she knew he wasn't a pro at wandless magic yet?

But... her Head of House was speaking to her again.

Gaston couldn't help but smile a little as he watched Phantom sidle over to Miss Umbridge. He was very grateful to his cat for the distraction... not that she had any idea what she was doing, of course. Or did she? Sometimes he wondered if Phantom sensed his emotions and was reacting accordingly. the black and white Persian nudged her head against the girl's hand to demand more petting. She was ever purring a little! Well, at least one of us is winning her over, he thought.

But his amusement at the cat's antics soon turned to shock as Miss Umbridge started speaking. His bright blue eyes grew wide; all he could to was stare at the girl in utter disbelief for a moment. That was probably the last thing he thought she'd say! He was expecting blame, insults, anything but advice. Once the initial shock wore off, he sat lost in thought, wondering how to answer her question. "It bothers me because I don't think I was right," he said as he finally forced himself to look back at the girl. "At least not now anyway, I'm sure I did at the time..." He sighed, pinching at the corners of his eyes. "When I saw you knock that cup out of Derfael's hand, I thought you were bullying him. Then when I found out why, I was hurt and overreacted." There was no other way to describe what had happened. "I regretted it immediately, but once I said I was taking points, I had to follow through with it. The thing I still don't understand is why... why you thought I would give my class tainted snacks." He knew Miss Umbridge probably wouldn't want to hear his side of the story, but he thought she had a right to know.

He nodded, chuckling slightly in reply to what the girl said about needing to stand up for himself and people taking advantage of him. That was exactly what everyone had been telling him all his life! "You're right," he said, "I am, and I intent to do just that." Just maybe not in the way she was expecting. "And as your your Head of House, I don't want there to be any hard feelings between us, so I was hoping we could start fresh..." He gave the girl a hopeful smile, but that smile turned into a laugh at what she said next. "I may have to take you up on that offer, Miss Umbridge!"

This cat was DEFINITELY Marchand's familiar. Dora could tell beyond the shadow of a doubt. All fluffy and soft and mild mannered. Yep. Totally Professor Marchand. And if Dora knew what the man was thinking she would tell him OF COURSE his familiar sensed his emotions and such. That was what they were for, right? Alas, she did not. So she kept her thoughts to herself about the pretty kitty.

Dora continued to scratch the cat's ears as she listened to the Charms dude. And she noted the shock and wide eyes and such, yet remained silent until he finished speaking. No need in making him angry or sad or something. "Sir, I don't take food or drinks from any of my professors. No one. It's not just you, so you ought not to take offense to that. Thanks to Professor Myers shrinking us against our will one term I tend not to trust anyone. Besides, my uncle taught me to have constant vigilance... and shared a story with me about HIS time at Hogwarts. It has been documented to have happened more than once, this tainted food and drink. Better safe than Sorry," she said with a shrug. Not that she imagined anyone would believe her or understand her aversion, she still stood by her choices and never wavered. Nope. "And I was merely trying to help Derf. And have I ever given you or any other professor a reason to think I am a bully? I may not be the nicest person in the world, nor do I always have a great disposition... but I am not and never will I be a BULLY. That's rather insulting actually."

And then add insult to injury the man was LAUGHING at her. This was no joking matter, really. She was being very sincere and serious. And didn't appreciate being laughed at. Ever. Hirsch had done it last term and she had YET to forgive the man. Hmph. So as Dora's face turned from soft to hard lines she straightened her back and crossed her hands in her lap. "Well. I wish you the best of luck, sir. Now. May I please be excused? I have some studying to do," she said in a proper and clipped tone. Here was a girl willing to help and he was laughing at her. RUDE.

"I'm fine, thank you for asking," he said, dropping his gaze to hide the sadness in his eyes. "And you?"

He was fine? Did fine mean fine or did it have another definition? Also Professor Marchand dropped his gaze.... was he hiding something? Hmm... Sometimes the word had multiple meanings but she decided not to pursue the string of concerns in her mind. It wasn't exactly her place, was it? At least at Beauxbatons, it would not have been appreciated with some of the Professors. "I'm well, much better this term than last term. I haven't had to visit the Hospital Wing yet," she chuckled.

Taking a sip of the coffee, she smiled at his response. She shouldn't drink too much. She had three cups the other morning and had been bouncing off of the castle walls. "More coffee? That's sounds like a dangerous offer, Professor. Thanks!" Her brothers, in particular Simon, had been the ones to instill manners in her.

Professor Marchand's response was realistic and what Olivia needed. The fact that he had said that it was difficult to learn and that he still struggled it made her a little nervous about it all. She began feeling more comfortable when he offered to help her despite still struggling with it. "I'd really appreciate you helping me with this," she grinned, truly meaning every word of it'll. It was awesome that he had offered to help her. Seriously. Other professors could have turned her away and back on her wild goose chase. Olivia noticed the slight eye drop and she restrained a frown. Why was Professor Marchand sad? He was awesome and a great Head of House. "Maybe helping me learn it can help you master it? The more the practice, the better!"

Gaston wasn't exactly sure how he expected Miss Umbridge to answer his question, but it certainly wasn't the answer he got! Again, his bright blue eyes widened in shock as the girl told him about her uncle and about Paul shrinking the students. That didn't sound like Paul at all,
but he had no reason to doubt the girl! He nodded. "I... I understand," he said. "I had no idea until just now." He must've still been at Beaubatons when the incident happened, and it wasn't exactly the kind of thing that came up in conversations with the Herbology professor or with other students. "I'm not offended now that I know. I can't say I blame you for being cautious. It sounds to me like the incident in my class was all just one big misunderstanding."

And speaking of misunderstandings... The professor had been holding out hope that they could put this behind them, but Miss umbridge's next words made the faint glimmer of hope in his eyes go out. Now he felt even worse than ever! "I didn't mean to insult you, Miss Umbridge," he said, his expression darkening. "I was only trying to explain where I was coming from.... and apologize." Come to think of it, he was starting to feel insulted too! What else was he supposed to think upon seeing a student smack a cup of cocoa out of someone's hand?! "I know you aren't a bully. I just wish you understood..." His voice trailed off, but he forced himself on. "Bullying is something I try to watch out for, and..." He'd dealt with it all his life, but he would not allow it to happen to his students! "...and when I saw... I jumped to a conclusion and it was the wrong one, and I'm sorry."

Gaston was still inwardly berating himself for saying the wrong thing again when he noticed Miss Umbridge's expression harden. Well, this conversation was going nowhere fast! It seemed the harder he tried to win her forgiveness, the more he set her off. He wracked his brain, wondering what he did wrong this time, and eventually reasoned it was because he laughed.
"I wasn't laughing at you, Miss Umbridge, honest," he said. "I was laughing at myself because everything you said is true - I don't stand up for myself.
People do take advantage of me - and because I was relieved that you'd offered to help me. I thought it meant we could finally put our differences aside..." But it looked like he was wrong.

He heaved a sad, exasperated sigh. He was done apologizing; he was done explaining himself; he was done hoping she would understand! Now he realized that no matter what he did, she would only assume the worst of him, and it hurt. "But now I see the only thing this conversation has accomplished is making you angrier and me sadder," he said, dismissing her with a wave of his hand. "Yes, you may go, Miss Umbridge."

Somehow Gaston got the idea that Miss Holden didn't believe him when he said he was fine - and she was right not to - but to his relief, she didn't press the issue. He didn't want to burden the girl with his problems! Despite his sadness, he couldn't help but chuckle a little along with the girl. "I'm glad to hear it, Miss Holden," he said with a small smile.
"A trip to the hospital wing is never a good start to the term!" And he would know; the same thing happened to him during his first term here. He shook his head at the memory of the poltergeists' dangerous antics. At least they only had one of them to deal with now!

His smile turned into a laugh when the girl called his offer for more coffee dangerous. "I think it's a risk I'm willing to take," he said. "You're very welcome." Oh and that reminded him! He gently slid the glass candy dish on his desk a little closer to his student. "Would you like some chocolate too?" he asked, silently berating himself for not thinking to offer it to her sooner.

Gaston wasn't sure how Miss Holden would react when he told her he still struggled with wandless magic. Would she get discouraged? Judge him?
Tell Hawthorne that he was incompetent at his job? He blinked dumbly.
The girl's words of encouragement caught him by surprised, but he smiled nonetheless. "That's the spirit, Miss Holden!" he said, beaming back at her.

Gaston was silent for a moment as he tried to decide what would be the best way to approach the subject. "Wandless magic is the purest form of magic," he said. "It's the magic we are born with and more so than any other type of magic is tied to our emotions, which is what makes it so difficult to control. It takes strong focus and concentration, but in order to be successful at it, you must feel the spell you're casting." He paused to give time for the information to sink in before going on, "When you're just starting out or if you tend to be easily overwhelmed by emotion, it's may help to match the spells you practice to your mood, for example..."

He waved a hand, and the shades on the windows drew themselves and all the lights went out, casting the office into complete darkness. In the dark, he drew his wand and with a quick flick turned the lights back on. "Does that make sense so far?" he asked.

She chuckled at his comment about the dangerous offer being a risk that he was willing to take. That was the spirit! Taking risks was always good. Olivia needed to be more wiling to take risks in other aspects of her life (other than academics). She smiled more. Professor Marchand definitely fit with the lions for sure. Ooh! Chocolate and coffee? Don't mind if I do, thought Olivia, feeling thoroughly spoiled with getting both a coffee and chocolate! She was definitely going to have to visit the Head of her House more. Olivia couldn't hardly say no to chocolate. "Oh, sure, thank you. That would be lovely," she smiled as she eyed the chocolates before deciding on a milk chocolate one with a swirl on it. She took a bite of it. Ooh. Salted caramel filled. That was delicious. One more bit. Oops. All gone too soon.

Taking a quick sip of coffee, Olivia opened up her notebook and chose a purple colored pen. Instead of taking notes in her normal style of writing down everything almost word for word and underlining key phrases, she opted for a key word approach for this one. So wandless magic required a lot of concentration and your emotions had an effect on the spell you were or are casting..? That made sense. But she'd check to make sure. Before she could ask her clarifying question, Professor Marchand waved his hand and all of the lights went out and the shades closed. WOAH. That was incredible. Her eyes widened in awe. That was so cool! "Incredible." She was certainly starstrck.

Then he asked if she was following. She slowly nodded. "I think so.... So I imagine that its easy to get frustrated with some of these spells.. and that frustration can make it harder to cast new spells?" she offered, trying to walk through it in her mind.

This guy... and all of his SHOCK and such. It was kind of annoying, but she kept her face impassive as he reacted. "Perhaps you shouldn't just jump to conclusions next time,' she muttered quietly before standing up to move toward the door. "And just so you know, I am really good friends with Derf. He is my little buddy and I have been teaching hi m Mermish. So you really did jump to the completely incorrect conclusion. Making assumptions is very nasty business."

Why did she feel like she was chiding a grown man for bad behaviour?! This was ridiculous.

But the girl found herself pausing at the door... hand on the handle... "Sir, I don't know what has happened to make you so sad, but I think it's time you either work through it and get past it, or at least leave your personal issues at the door, so to speak. You have a job to do not only as our teacher, but also as a role model to us in your house. Like I said before, you have to lead us by example and to be quite frank, I don't think you're doing a very good job at it just yet."

And with that the blonde squared her shoulders, turned the knob and exited before he could respond further. The conversation was clearly DONE. She had nothing more to say to the man at present.

It was only when his cat started pawing at the door that the thought occurred to him that there could be someone on the other side.

He opened the door and saw Mr. Botros waiting on the other side. It was obvious that the poor kid was trying not to cry, and that made the professor even sadder! A momentary panic gripped his mind. Had something catastrophic happened, or was the boy just sad? Either way, he was here to listen. "Goodness! What's the matter, Mr. Botros?" he said, looking at him with concern.

Gaston's heart went out to the poor child, but the thing that touched him most was that he'd come to him with whatever was bothering him this time instead of Rula or Junia. He wanted to hug the boy but he didn't want to overwhelm him. And it seemed he wasn't the only one. Phantom sauntered over to Mr. Botros and started rubbing against his leg with a plaintive meow. Gaston shook his head, "Don't mind her," he said gently, picking up the little black and white Persian. "Now, come inside and have a seat." He opened the door a little wider to let his student inside.

OOC: You may post in the office whenever you're ready!

Perhaps Abey's knock on the door had been intentionally very very quiet. He really was ever so nervous about visiting Marchand in his office; he had never been in aaaaaaany professor's office before. So, when there hadn't been a response, he had been all set to beat a hasty retreat and perhaps go find Squigs and hug him instead.

But then the office door opened, and Abey found himself looking right up at his Head of House. Marchand's words and the look of concern on his face had Abey's lower lip trembling once more. He held back his tears though, and actually was doing a really good job with it considering he was NOT the type to hold back emotions. Even the cat coming over to say hello(?) made his heart (his emotions heart, not his real heart) feel like it was exploding and crumbling all at the same time. Cats... were so good... it made him want to cRY.

He couldn't find the words to say what was wrong, and also didn't want to risk someone else hearing, and so settled with a small, "I needed to talk to you," and hoped that that would suffice.

Without saying anything else - because then it would surely be impossible to maintain composure - Abey stepped over the threshold and into the office, trying to subtly wipe at his eyes with his sleeve again because they were leaking just a little bit. As instructed, he went ahead and took a seat, staring around at the office as he did so. Abey wasn't entirely sure what he had expected, but all the cool things inside were new and interesting enough that they almost distracted him from what had drawn him to Professor Marchand's office today.

Almost.

... Okay, no, not at all.

Gaston smiled warmly as Miss Holden accepted his offer for chocolate and thanked him. "You're very welcome, Miss Holden!" he said. "You can have more if you want. My mother keeps sending me more candy than I know what to do with, so why not give some to my students?" He chuckled sheepishly, but his expression quickly darkened. Or at least his mother did send him candy... but that was before the fight he'd had with his father, before he'd had to cut off all contact with both of his parents.

He mentally shook himself. No time to dwell on that now! Back to the matter at hand. He noticed Miss Holden taking notes on what was said and gave her an approving smile. He hoped he hadn't interfered too much with her note-taking when he took out the lights! Oops? He was glad for the momentary darkness, as it helped to conceal his wand. There was no way he'd be able to turn the lights back on wandlessly in his current state of mind, but he didn't want her to know that.

He couldn't help but smile a little as he looked back at Miss Holden and saw her starstruck expression. "Thank you," he said, bowing his head slightly to hide the blush rising to his cheeks. It wasn't often that students complimented him! His head jerked back up as the girl spoke. Good, he was glad she was following so far! Ne nodded. "It can be, yes," he replied, "but what you do when that happens is use that emotion to your advantage." Like he'd done by turning off the lights just now. "If you start getting frustrated with a spell, try practicing another, angrier spell... like Incendio or a Knockback Jinx, for example."

He gave a moment for this information to sink in before going on, "It's also best to start simple. Wandless magic is like learning to do magic all over again. You start with the simple spells first, and work your way up." And now he had a question for her. "As a matter of interest, how far along are you with nonverbal magic?"

The poor boy's trembling lip did not go unnoticed, though Gaston decided not to call attention to it. He wondered if he'd done something to upset him even worse, though he had no idea what, and it made him feel even worse! "Of course," he said softly. "I'm all ears." He followed Mr. Botros into the office, his cat nestled in his arms, and closed the door with a wave of his wand.

The moment he put the black and white Persian down, she ran to the boy and jumped into his lap. "Phantom..." he scolded, giving the cat a reprimanding look. He looked at the boy, trying to gauge his reaction to the cat's intrusion. "Is she bothering you?" he asked. He was more than happy to let him pet his cat if he wanted, but he didn't want the animal to upset him.

Normally Gaston would take the larger leather chair behind the desk, but it didn't seem right to put a barrier between himself and Mr. Botros when he was so distraught. He sat in the chair next to the boy, eyeing him with sympathy. It was obvious the poor child was trying not to cry. and it broke the professor's heart. That was something he could relate to; he was always useless at hiding his emotions! "Abey, it's okay," he said gently. "You don't have to try to hide your emotions, especially not around me." There would be time to tell him what was wrong later.

Abey hadn't quite been expecting the cat to come back to him again, but he absolutely wasn't complaining when it did.

"No, it's okay," he said, petting the cat with a shaky hand, before he added in an even shakier voice. "I love c-cats..." He had Squigs after all, who had had to put up with a lot of cuddles he probably didn't want to deal with, but Abey had been reluctant to really let him go. Actually, he thought himself lucky that this cat - Phantom - had deigned to come and sit with HIM actually.

But he was still upset, and his eyes were welling up with tears which made the world even more blurry than it had been recently. He sniffled again, and looked up at Marchand who had taken the seat beside him, and was telling him it was okay. But it wasn't okay, was it? Abey tried to open his mouth to say so too, but the second he did, the pathetic wall he had attempted to create to hold back his emotions suddenly gave way, and he immediately burst into tears.

And upset though he was, it was a relief. It wasn't fun or even helpful, Abey decided, to try and stop expressing his emotions. Actually, it was horrible actually. It made EVERYTHING feel even MORE horrible.

"I-I-I'm sss-sorry!" Abey sobbed, really not trying to hold back the tears anymore. He wasn't even apologising for crying, actually, or for trying to hold back in the first place. It was more for... everything else.

More chocolate? Merlin. He was trying to bribe her, wasn't he? Tsk. Tsk. Her vote for best Professor could be bought with chocolate. She'd say no but honestly it would be bought. She thought with a chuckle and decided not to mention it. "No thank you. I'd love another one but I should be good."

It got dark. And then he turned on the lights. Awesome. Wandless magic was absolutely incredible. Her eyes widened in awe at his next statement. So she could practice spells based on her emotions. Incendio and the Knockback Jinx? Sweet. This would be great. She wouldn't have to be too focused for other spells.

She nodded again a couple of times. Start with the simple spells and work her way up. Olivia could do that. She wanted to learn this and she would pour every ounce of her being into this task. To his question about nonverbal magic, she answered genuinely. "By the end of last term, I was able to cast several spells nonverbally. Finite and a couple of jinx spells." She had been very proud of that. She particularly enjoyed casting "finite" nonverbally. It was just so much fun. She didn't really have any other reason why. "I can also cast protege non verbally too."

As Rooney let himself get distracted from his thoughts by giving Phantom attention, he was able to listen to what Professor Marchand was saying and ultimately suggesting. "I haven't considered anything abroad, Sir. But that isn't to say I'm ruling it out. I'd love to travel before settling down in New York with Olivia in the future." Because that was very clearly where she wanted to lay her roots and he would go where she was if it kept a smile on her face.

"I'm more than likely going to apply to all of the programs in this country though. For peace of mind. Edinburgh for location to Hogwarts. London for the theatre scene... I just wanted a professional opinion.."

Gaston managed a small smile. He was glad Abey wasn't bothered by Phantom's presence, especially since the black and white Persian wasn't going anywhere any time soon. She nuzzled against the poor boy's hand and began to purr loudly as he pet her. She must've sensed that he needed comforting; she did the same thing to him whenever he was sad. "I think she's trying to cheer you up," he said.

For a moment, he thought the boy was going to say something, but he burst into tears instead. Gaston wasn't surprised; the poor child had been trying not to cry since he got here. He wanted to comfort him, but he didn't know how - or even what was wrong. All he could do was watch at a complete loss for words as he helplessly watched the boy sob, and it broke his heart. Looking at him was like looking into the past and seeing himself at that age!

Blink, blink. Why was he apologizing? He hadn't done anything wrong! After a moment of thought, Gaston reasoned that he was probably sorry for falling apart in front of him. He couldn't think of any other reason. "You don't have to apologize, Abey," he said gently. "It's okay to be sad; it's okay to cry..." His voice trailed off with a slight catch. "Just take your time. YOu can tell me what's bothering you when you're ready."

He'd half-expected the girl to take him up on his offer for more chocolate, but she didn't. "Alright," he said with a smile. "The offer still stands if you should want some later."

He saw her eyes widen as he went on to explain the concept of matching wandless spells to one's current emotions. Was that because she didn't understand, or was she just in awe? From the way she was nodding, he would guess it was the latter. Then his own eyes widened slightly at what she said next. She was a lot further along with nonverbal spells than he expected! "Excellent progress, Miss Holden! I'm impressed," the professor said. "The reason I asked is that mastering nonverbal magic is a stepping stone to learning wandless magic. I'm going to give you a list of spells to practice nonverbally on your own time." He grabbed a quill and piece of parchment and jotted down a few spells. "It may seem tedious, but it'll help you with wandless magic in the long run."

"If you want to try your hand at wandless magic now, I can give you a simple spell to try," Gaston went on. He looked around the room, and suddenly an idea came to him. "I know... how about we try levitating a piece of chocolate out of the dish?" He took a deep breath. Please let this work, he thought to himself as he made the wand movement for Wingardium leviosa with his hand, and a moment later, a chocolate rose out of the glass candy bowl. "When casting a spell wandlessly, the trick is to make the wand movement with your hand," he explained. "Now you try it - and don't be discouraged if you don't do it right away. Wandless magic takes lots of practice."

Phantom was clearly loving every minute of the attention she was getting from the Head Boy. The Persian kept rubbing against his leg, flicking her tail back and forth. She looked up, revealing the white half of her face and meowed. Gaston chuckled a little. Surely a theater buff like Mr. Bronwyn would know where this cat got her name!

He nodded as the Ravenclaw explained his plans for the future. So he wasn't planning on studying abroad at the moment... that was understandable. "Noble ambitions, Mr. Bronwyn," he said. "If you should ever change your mind about studying abroad, just let me know. I could recommend a few French universities if you're ever interested."

He smiled. "I understand," he said. He, too, had been reluctant to study abroad at that age. "Either university would be a good choice, though London has a more rigorous charms program if I do say so myself."

She appreciated the standing offer for chocolate. Maybe she would have another in a few minutes, but, then again, since it was a standing offer, she could always stop by again for a piece of chocolate.

Olivia blushed a very slight shade of pink when her Head of House told her that he was impressed with her progress. She was never someone who was great at taking compliments or receiving praise. "Thank you," she said with a nod. She was proud of herself. It had taken her ages to feel confident in her abilities, especially with non-verbal magic. However, somehow it all clicked when she was dueling. She couldn't explain how or why it decided to happen like that. It just did. She nodded, listening to him speak about a few spells that would help her master wandless magic in the longterm. More non-verbal ones. Alright. She could do that. "Terrific! So the more confident I feel about these spells, the better off I'll be when it comes to wandless magic? Then I'll practice every day." It could be a break from studying for OWLS.

They were going to practice now? Ummm... Okay. Olivia nodded, readying herself to jump in, but was thankful when Professor Marchand demonstrated. Phew. She watched him levitate a piece of chocolate out of the bowl and she grinned a little more. WOW. Even though it was a simple spell, it was just really awesome that he was doing it without a wand and without the incantation spoken.

What was the wand movement again? Swish and flick! Swish and flick. She focused on a piece of chocolate and performed the wand movement with her hand slowly as she said the incantation in her mind. Nothing happened. She repeated the process again. No. Nothing. Taking a deep breath, she picked up the speed at which her hand was moving and uttered the incantation in her mind. Wingardium Leviosa. The small piece of chocolate began to move but it was not lifted off of the serving dish. Hmm.. That was progress but wasn't good enough.... She needed to take a step back and not let herself get frustrated.

Olivia took a longer deep breath and placed her hand on her leg, letting herself fully relax. She lifted her hand into the air, preforming the swish and flick over the chocolate and watched as the piece of chocolate slowly resisted the spell until it lazily hovered a centimetre or two off of the bottom of the bowl. She smiled softly and then removed her hand, watching the piece of chocolate gently plop back into the bowl. "That was a lot... I can see how this can become frustrating," chuckled Olivia. It had taken a lot of concentration for her to barely lift the piece of chocolate from the bowl. More practice would be needed.

He jumped slightly, and apparently he wasn't the only one who'd been startled. Phantom, who had been snoozing on her cat condo behind him, jerked up and gave a disgruntled meow.

Now who could that be? The professor laid down his quill and got up to answer the door. He smiled when he saw Miss Summers waiting on the other side. "Hello, Miss Summers," he said, opening the door a bit wider. "Please come in. What can I do for you?"

OOC: You may post in the office now.
When the professor moved aside, Noelle eagerly went in. She knew this professor well having worked side by side with him. "Remember how I told you that I was looking to be an auror? And an animagi?" She asked forgetting to give hellos for the moment. She was just too excited.

Noelle pulled the parchment from under her arm and waved it about. "I need you to sign a form. Its for animagi training. I have to get you, the Headmistress, and my parents to sign it." She said giving him a broad smile. She was actually doing this. Her DREAM.

WOW. Gaston couldn't help but notice Miss Holden blushing a little when he complimented her skills in nonverbal magic. He couldn't imagine why she would be embarrassed. She deserved every bit of praise he gave her! Oh well, maybe she was just shy about that sort of thing, just like him. He wasn't sure how she would react when he gave her the list of spells to practice nonverbally. He was prepared for protests and impatience, but to his surprise, none came. In fact, her response was just the opposite! He nodded, smiling a little. "Exactly, Miss Holden," he said and his smile grew at what she said next. "Glad to hear it! With that attitude, you'll master wandless magic in no time!" Figuratively speaking, of course. Learning wandless magic would take time, but a positive attitude would take her far.

Speaking of which, the charms professor was slightly surprised when he managed to wandlessly levitate a chocolate. He hadn't been in a particularly uplifting mood lately... He supposed the desire to help his student must've momentarily overpowered his other emotions and helped him focus on the task at hand. That was the only explanation he could come up with! He couldn't help but smile at the sight of Miss Holden's grin, but that smile faded as he watched her try the spell on her own. Was he expecting too much of her?

He watched with growing apprehension as she tried unsuccessfully a few times. Come on, Olivia! Keep trying, he thought. She was eventually able to budge a chocolate, but it still didn't lift. Just when he was about to suggest a break, she did it! "Bravo, Miss Holden! Very well done!" Gaston exclaimed, applauding wildly. "I know it might not seem like much now, but that was some amazing progress you just made." After he'd calmed down a bit from that rush of excitement, he went on, "Keep practicing those spells I gave you, and when you feel confident with those, I'll give you another, more advanced list to work on."

Gaston had barely shut the door behind him when Miss Summers started speaking. Clearly someone was excited! He couldn't help but laugh a bit; the girl's excitement was contagious. He nodded in reply to what she asked him. "Yes, of course," he said, taking his seat behind the desk. "Both are very noble ambitions..." He knew she would make a wonderful Auror some day!

Then she pulled a piece of parchment from under her arm. He was glad she told him what the form was, as it was difficult for him to get a good look at it when she was waving it around like that. "May I see it, please?" he said, reaching out to take the form while his free hand grabbed his quill. Even though he knew what it was, he wanted to read it himself before he signed anything. "I trust Professor Stewart has thoroughly explained the process to you..." The whole process of becoming an animagus sounded painful to him, which was why he hadn't attempted it himself, but if this was what Miss Summers wanted to do, he would support her in any way possible!

With a smile, Rooney shifted and sat on the floor with the cat. "If ever she goes missing, Sir. I expect you'll find her with me." Because this was a cat after his heart, unlike his own. Pomegranate attacked him on the daily, but Phantom... Phantom was a sweetheart for sure. It didn't surprise him that she was the pet of Professor Marchand. "Thank you for your advice, Sir. I really appreciate it." And that was from the bottom of his heart. He felt at ease around the Professors that he had asked for help with this problem.

Tilting his head as he peered up from the spot on the floor he had taken, Roo grinned. "Hey Sir, can I ask you something personal?"
