Default IMPS Challenge #4 :: Brent Westwood

You find yourself standing in a forest; however, this forest is quite different from those of the United Kingdom. While tall trees surround you and the vegetation is a pleasant green, the temperature is much warmer than you are used to. Scattered about are clues that will give your location away. A giant snail with spikes on its shell slowly makes its way past you, its mucus burning a trail in the vegetation. Look through the trees and you will see two rhinoceros-like creatures, a mother and her calf, minding their own business. A high-pitched, twittering song then sounds in the distance, and hopefully it stays that way.

But what is your purpose here? To find out, you had better start moving.

OOC: Post in this thread for your challenge to begin. You will have until July 30th @ 11:59 PM GMT to complete this challenge. Good luck!

Brent blinked in an attempt to adjust his vision from the safety of Hogwarts to the uncertainty of...

...the forest? Well, this was different. The last two challenges had started out in snow and freezing weather, and now they'd done a complete three hundred sixty degree turn for challenge four. He found himself thankful in some ways, but in other ways? Not so much. He had grown used to the spells he'd cast to protect himself from the elements of the last two challenges, but he'd be a fool to think the designers of IMPS would keep presenting him with situations he'd grown accustomed to.

His gaze moved from the tall trees to the vegetation around him, and he was suddenly aware of how hot it was here in the forest. A movement just ahead of him caught his attention, and his eyes landed on a streeler making its way past him. He quickly noted that although the creature was bred on several different continents, it was native to Africa. A clue? Maybe. People kept streelers as pets, though, so was the snail an immediate threat to him? He doubted it. A look ahead showed him two erumpents not minding him at all but rather keeping to themselves. More African beasts. There were many facts he recalled about erumpents, but right now, the thought most prominent in his mind was that the creatures usually didn't attack unless they were provoked. So thanks, but no, thanks. He wouldn't be provoking any erumpents today.

His mind raced with different sorts of plans, and he might have gone through with one of them, had the high-pitched, twittering song of a fwooper not reached his ears. A freakin' fwooper, of all things. He made note of two points--one, that the fwooper was in the distance for now, and two, that it was yet another African creature.

Alright, alright, he got the point. He was in Africa, and this was a creatures-related challenge. He'd previously narrowed it down to that much, based on the magical subjects he'd been presented with in the last three challenges. Also, wasn't there something about a fwooper's feathers that had ties to Ancient Runes? Something about the number four? Brent still hated Runes, but he had to give it total props for helping him out in this whole IMPS competition.

He gave a soft sigh before remembering that he absolutely had to do something about this heat. First off, he did not need the winter hat he'd put on as a 'just in case' piece of attire. It was May, but why wouldn't he have brought it along considering the last two challenges? A few charms came to Brent's mind, but in the end, he settled on one that he thought would best come to his aid out here in the middle of an IMPS challenge. After all, he couldn't just walk around casting on himself every five seconds or so. He needed something more permanent and something that wouldn't require his wand's undivided attention. So with a careful eye on the environment around him, Brent placed his winter hat in his left palm and turned his wand toward it. "Inanimatus Conjurus Glass Jar!" he exclaimed.

He held his hand steady, not wanting to break anything, as he waited for the spell to hopefully take effect. Soon enough, he was holding a small, glass jar in the palm of his hand. Brent carefully placed the jar onto the ground in front of him, and then he again pointed his wand forward. He called out the incantation for Bluebell Flames, and he watched as bright blue flames burst into the jar. SWEET! His plan was unfolding beautifully! Whether it ended up working or not was a different story, but for now, things seemed to be coming along just as he'd hoped they would. Just one more step in the process, and he'd hopefully beat the heat as he progressed through what he assumed to be an African forest. He waved his wand above his head then cast a Flame-freezing Charm into the jar. Now if his plan worked, that last charm would change the effects of the Bluebell Flames and give him a nice, summer breeze to walk around with. And if it didn't work? Well, he'd just abandon it and come up with 'Plan B', whatever that might be. He scooped up the jar and held it in his hand.

With that done, he wasn't getting anywhere just standing around. He quickly cast a Feather-light Charm on himself in hopes of moving through the forest without snapping the first twig or crunching a single leaf. He started to end it there, but at the last second, he added in a Supersensory Charm for obvious reasons. And as for that mucus compliments of the streeler? "Impervius!" he called out, casting the spell on both his shoes and the bottom of his legs. On that note, he stepped forward, jar in one hand and his wand in the other.

Indeed, the streeler and erumpents were no threat to you. The streeler is continuing on its own path, changing colour as it does so. The bigger of the two erumpents is watching you, though she does not charge since you aren't interested in attacking her calf. As for the fwoopers, their twittering isn't going to drive you insane as it remains distant.

Your plan to contain the blue flame in the glass jar works without any difficulties. The charm that followed did provide you with a breeze, albeit it isn't exactly going to cool you down much considering how warm it was in the African coastal forest.

The other spells casted work as expected, though it is the Supersensory Charm that comes with a slight problem. While you can now hear any sort of movement coming from the creatures present in the forest, the song of the fwoopers can be heard loud and clear. Do you want to drive yourself mad?

Moving forward presents you with more trees, taller grass, and the temperature is only rising. Suddenly, a random cherry-coloured door, containing no knob, standing on its own in the middle of the forest is spotted. Either the heat is playing tricks on you or this is something you are meant to examine further.

Brent cast a glance toward the erumpents, noting that the bigger of the two was eyeing him, yet doing nothing that indicated he'd attack. It still didn't completely put Brent at ease. He'd studied plenty of magical creatures before, but coming face to face with them in their natural environment? He couldn't say he'd had much experience on that end of things. The streeler was continuing on its merry way, the erumpents weren't charging him, and the fwooper was still singing away in the distance. As far as threats from creatures were concerned, Brent felt pretty confident that he was alright for now.

He looked down at his jar of freezing flames, noting that his plan had worked. Somewhat, at least. It was still scorching hot in the African forest, and the slight breeze had only lowered the temperature to 'slightly below miserable'. His plans seemed to be coming along wonderfully, until the sounds of the fwoopers reached his ears with such intensity that it caused him to stop right in his tracks. He winced a little as the sound intensified, and it was then he realized he'd been wrong to cast the Supersensory Charm. The sound that had once been in the distance now seemed as if it was a mere foot or so away from him.

"Finite!" he quickly cast, knowing good and well the spell would end everything he'd previously cast. It would be a complete pain to re-do everything, but he imagined it'd be even worse to be driven mad in the loneliness of the African forest. He sighed and set about recasting everything he'd previously done--save for the Supersensory Charm, thank you very much. He ran a hand through his hair, already slightly tired from the events he'd already encountered and the intensity of the challenge alone.

Merlin, it was getting hot. Brent second-guessed his 'breeze in a jar' idea, realizing it wasn't strong enough for the heat of the forest. He held tight to his jar for now, though, seeing as he didn't have a better plan at the moment. He had just been studying the trees and grass around him, when he stopped right in his tracks for the second time in a matter of minutes. Was his mind playing tricks on him, or was there a random, cherry-colored door just before him? This was IMPS--of course there was a random door in the middle of the forest. Brent approached the door with caution, while also staying a healthy distance away. He circled the door, noting that there were no knobs on either side of it.

Well, ...wasn't that just convenient?

As Brent continued to study the door, three ideas came to mind. The first was that there might possibly be hidden words on the door, and if that was the case..."Aparecium!" he called out, pointing his wand toward the door. His second thought was that there might very well be a doorknob, but it was just concealed in some way. If that was the case..."Revelio!" he called out, again pointing his wand toward the door. His final thought for now was that the door simply needed to be unlocked with magic, and that no doorknob at all would ever open it. In that case..."Alohomora!" he called out, pointing his wand toward the door a third time. Brent took a step back and waited to see if his efforts would produce any positive results.

Surely something would work...

Thank Merlin you casted the general counter-spell. Another few minutes being exposed to the fwoopers' song and you surely would have started losing your mind, maybe going so far as to head back to the erumpents on all fours. Fortunately for you, that won't be happening because of the charm you casted. As assumed, it cancels out everything that you had previously casted on yourself. The only thing that remains is the blue flame in the jar and the 'breeze' coming from it.

But what are you going to do about that scorching heat? Have you noticed that your mouth has gone dry in spite of the beads of sweat pouring down the side of your face?

Perhaps the door is more important to you. With each spell that is cast, nothing happens. The door remains just as it is, mocking you. No secret messages reveal themselves. There is no doorknob to be revealed. The unlocking charm had been a waste. Have you looked at the other side of the door? You might find something carved there.

Something, however, rustles in the grass nearby. What was that? ... Seeing nothing coming out at you, there probably is nothing to worry about. It was probably just another streeler. Now back to that door, yes?

MERLIN ON A HOT, SCORCHING AFRICAN DAY!!!

It was FREAKIN' SCALDING out here! Brent frowned at his jar of Bluebell Flames with the deepest frown he could muster. It had been a failed plan, and so he gently placed the jar of flames on the ground a few feet away from the door, so they could slowly burn away until they were extinguished. The glass jar had once been his good, winter hat, but the forest could keep the blasted hat as far as he was concerned. As he walked back to the door, he used the sleeve of his shirt to wipe the sweat from his face. He then took a moment to remove one shoe and sock and replace only the shoe. For the second time in IMPS, he was about to transfer his sock into something useful...

...a drinking cup.

...and NO, he did not care that he was about to drink from a glass that was once a sock. At this point, he was pretty sure he'd drink from a dung pail if it was available. He placed the sock on a fallen log and pointed his wand toward it. "Inanimatus Conjurus Drinking Cup!" he exclaimed. Once transfigured, Brent wasted no time picking us his new cup and filling it to the rim with water. "Aguamenti!" he said. When the cup was full, he ended the spell and tilted the cup toward his mouth. He gulped the water until it was gone then placed his trusty cup into his pocket. He then searched the ground for a small but sturdy stick, and when he found one, he raised his wand to cast on it before pausing in thought. Hmm... He ended up tossing the stick into the air, and when it was within wandshot, he cast on it. "Glacius!" he called out. The stick froze into a block of ice, which Brent caught before it had time to hit the ground. He then ran the block of ice along his face, neck, arms, and chest in an attempt to cool off. Was he going to allow himself to succumb to the miserable heat he'd been thrust into? Not today, Africa.

Now that he was pretty sure he wouldn't end up a melted puddle of Brent on the ground, he turned his attention back to the door. None of his efforts proved to be useful. His eyebrows knitted inward in concentration. So what now? He'd re-cast both the Featherlight Charm and Impervius back when he'd had to abruptly end that Supersensory Charm he'd cast on himself. So with confidence that he'd likely not crunch down loudly on the ground or step on any venom left over from the streeler, he made his way to the opposite side of the door. Could the secrets behind the door's mystery be here?

Just as he wondered that, he heard a rustling in the grass nearby. He looked wide-eyed toward the source of the sound, but nothing immediately came to his attention. Even still, something was over there, and regardless of how innocent or not innocent it might be, he wasn't going to leave himself wide open for an attack. Africa was also known as the home for the diricawl, runespoor, tebo, and...Merlin, help him, the sphinx and nundu. If the latter was out there, he might just call it quits here and now. He cast a Silver Shield Spell then followed that up with "Fianto Duri!" With a final, cautious glance toward the grass, Brent turned back to the door.

"Lumos!" he said, casting a light on the door to get a better look.

Though the Bluebell Flame was an ingenious idea, it was smart of you to let it go. It was never going to cool you off in this Heat. Your quick thinking with transfiguring your sock into a cup to drink from will definitely help you. Staying hydrated in this terrible heat will help you more than you realize.

Although you created a block of ice from a stick, it is melting a lot faster than you intended, and you find yourself completely soaked holding a stick. At least you will be somewhat cooled off.

It was an excellent idea to conjure a silver shield and the Fianto Duri. Now you will be protected should something decide to attack.

The rustling in the grass doesn’t detract you from noticing what your Lumos lit up on the opposite side of the door. You quickly notice that there is a two-lined Runic message etched along the door.

The first line reads:
ᚦᛁᛋ ᛞᛟᚱ ᚱᛖᛗᚨᚾᛋ ᚲᛚᛟᛋᛞ ᚹᛇᛚ ᚦ ᛋᚾᚨᚲ ᚱᛟᛗᛋ ᚠᚱᛖ
Could this possibly be the answer to opening the cherry-stained door? Well, there's only one way to find out. Hopefully you've at least mastered the basics of the runic alphabet.

While the temperatures in the depths of the African forest were still far from the temperatures in the arctic tundra, Brent could feel at least a small difference after the refreshing drink of water and the small ice bath. His block of ice had melted back into its original stick form, which Brent considered a good thing, seeing as he could now place the stick in his other pocket (the one not holding the cup) and save it for later. He quickly did just that before turning his attention back to the now-lighted door.

Was there...a carving in the door? Brent inched a bit closer until he could see the distinct markings of a line of runes now present. Had they been there before? Probably, but by the light of his wand, he could now read them. He then smirked--a genuine, confident smirk. For a person who hated Ancient Runes and considered himself allergic to the very idea, he'd used them in every single challenge he'd been faced with so far. HE HAD THIS. A burst of confidence spread over him, and despite the fact that the rustling in the grass was still present in his mind, he had a really good feeling about this.

Brent retrieved his trusty stick out of his pocket and began working through the carving...

Thurisaz = Th
Isa = I
Sowilo = S

Brent used the stick to etch the word THIS in the dirt.

Dagaz = D
Othala = O
Raidho (his trusty old friend from previous challenges) = R

Brent added the letters DOR to his etchings in the dirt.

Raidho = R
Ehwaz = E
Mannaz = M
Ansuz = A
Nauthiz = N
Sowilo = S

Although he was beginning to make out what the message said (so far), Brent etched the next word just as he'd translated it--REMANS.

Kenaz = K
Laguz = L
Othala = O
Sowilo = S
Dagaz = D

THIS DOR REMANS KLOSD...

Well, yeah, he'd figured out that much about the door, but the secrets to opening it was a different story. This door remains closed---until what? He looked toward the next rune carving and began making out the next word of the clue.

Wunjo = W or V. Hmm...
Eihwaz = EI
Laguz = L

Huh? Weil? Veil? Neither word made sense to him, and so Brent carved both of them into the dirt in hopes that the rest of the sentence would help him fill in the blanks. Now on to the next word...

Thurisaz = Th

...that's it? Just "Th?" Brent sighed and carved the letters into the dirt. His sentence now read:

THIS DOR REMANS KLOSD WEIL/VEIL TH

Lovely. Thanks for the clarification, Ancient Runes. [/sarcasm]

Sowilo = S
Nauthiz = N
Ansuz = A
Kenaz = K

...uhh, that word looked an awful lot like the word snake, which sort of terrified Brent and got the wheels in his head turning. Nevertheless, he added SNAK to his sentence.

Raidho = R
Othala = O
Mannaz = M
Sowilo = S

ROMS. Ughhhhhh. Brent's stomach did a little flip, and a feeling of dread formed in the pit of his stomach. He was almost afraid to decipher the last word, even though he was starting to get an idea of what was ahead of him.

Fehu = F
Raidho = R
Ehwaz = E

Brent felt his heart pick up in pace as he added those last three letters to his sentence. His attention was now completely on the deciphered sentence as he studied what he'd etched in the dirt.

THIS DOR REMANS KLOSD WEIL/VEIL TH SNAK ROMS FRE.

The sentence was clear now. There was literally no doubt about it. He scratched out the 'VEIL' part then read his prediction out loud.

"This door remains closed while the snake roams free," he said, his voice just above a whisper. He gulped, realized he had to...he needed to...say the sentence with a lot more confidence. He owed it to himself to at least get built up about what he feared was to come. "This door remains closed while the snake roams free!" And as he said those words, he turned sharply toward the place where the grass had once rustled and pushed his now-trusty stick back into his pocket. His wand was at the ready, and he was armed with the Silver Shield Spell and Fianto Duri he'd cast moments before.

He'd been thinking about Africa as he'd progressed through the forest, and he'd narrowed that rustle in the grass down a runespoor. He was ready. The runespoor might be a snake, but guess what? So was Brent. Alright, dude. GAME ON. "Ready when you are," he said to the still unknown cause of that rustle in the grass. The rustle which he thought just might be a three-headed snake.

Spectacular...

Seconds after you transcribe the first line of the runic message, you hear a series of loud hissing sounds behind you. I would turn around slowly if I were you…

When you do get turned around, you see that a 6 foot tall Runespoor has all six eyes staring at you. The orange and black stripped three-headed snake is coiling up, ready to strike. Do you know enough about this creature to protect yourself?

Their tongues flicker in and out of their mouths, tasting the air to see if you are a threat. Apparently it didn’t like what it tasted, because soon enough they hiss and show their fangs.

The middle head of the Runespoor strikes at your shield, smacking its head against the silver metal. The right head begins hissing at the middle head extremely disapprovingly. The left head hisses at the others, urging them to quickly move their long body around your shield.

Brent was still eyeing the location he'd assumed the rustling had come from, when he heard it--the distinct sound of hissing. It wasn't the hissing part that surprised him, though. He'd gathered a snake was coming all thanks to the runic message and his predictions about Africa. It'd been the fact that the hissing was coming from behind him that had taken him by surprise.

Brent turned around, his wand gripped tightly in his hands, and his breath held in anticipation. HOLY FREAKIN' MERLIN. Brent had almost yelled that part out loud, only...he couldn't find his voice at the moment. In all his years of studying the runespoor, he'd never anticipated exactly how large they were when you were staring one right in the eyes...all six of them. He'd thought he was ready for this, but what he was really ready to do was take three steps backward, turn around, and haul it out of here. Only, he was pretty sure the runespoor would chase after him, and he was equally sure it'd catch up to him. The door was the only way...

...the same door he couldn't open unless he managed to capture the snake.

Brent didn't think for a single second that he was expected to actually kill the snake. He was only meant to force the snake into a position where it could no longer roam free. That was literally all he had to do. Hopefully. He did a super quick inspection of the creature before him, noting that each head did indeed have a different personality and seem to want to do something different than the other two heads. He remembered reading about that once. Apparently, the left head was called the planner and decided what to do next, the middle head was a bit of a dreamer, and the right head simply critiqued the other two, which often ended up in it losing its head. It was this line of thinking that led Brent to devise a plan. If he could somehow force the heads to do exactly what they were meant to do best, he could either confuse them or pit them against one or two of the other heads.

He had a moment of hesitation when the snake began hissing and showing its fangs. Okay, this thing was out to kill, wasn't it? Well, not today, runespoor. He gave a slight jump when the middle head struck at his shield. Wasn't it supposed to be the daydreamer?! Striking at his shield was not daydreaming... That was it! Plan number one would be to put the middle head into its natural daydreaming state, and then he'd be left with the planner and the one that liked to critique, and maybe he could get the two of them angry with one another instead of him! Brent raised his wand and sent a Daydream Charm toward the middle head. "Sentio Somnium!" he called out. His second thought was to get the head on the left to plan something that would earn it a pretty harsh critique from the head on the right. Right now, it looked like the head on the left wanted the others to move along and explore their prey, aka Brent, a bit further, and that was just a big ole bag of NOPE. Brent shifted his weight from one foot to the other as he realized he didn't have an immediate plan. What could cause the head on the left, the planner, to make such a bad decision that the head on the right would become angry with it? Uhh... "Confundo!" he finally exclaimed, as he whipped his wand around the left head in a half circle sort of fashion. Finally, and just because he thought the head on the right would end up angry at him at some point and time no matter what, he sent a spell to deal with it, too. "Arresto Momentum!" he called out, casting on the snake as a whole.

After all, he still needed to actually capture the snake, so he didn't want that left head making any hasty decisions to make a run for it...err, a slither for it.

Though the use of the Daydream Charm was very smart, your lack of concentration on what the middle head was to be daydreaming about caused the charm to fail rather quickly. The middle head shook as if it was confused about something instead of actually daydreaming. The head is now staring at you hissing, confused as to what you were trying to do to it, making it even angrier.

The heat is creeping back as your clothes dry; did you notice that you were sweating again?

The Confundus charm on the left head was working very well; it kept looking around as if thinking ‘What was I doing?’ At least lefty was confused for a bit giving you time to cast the momentum charm on the whole of the Runespoor, but how long would it hold?

Did you forget about the right head? It is critically watching you, trying to find the chink in your armor. As the right head lunges for you, it seems to be going extremely slowly. Maybe that momentum charm was working after all. You soon remember there is a second line of runes, but your distance from the door doesn’t allow you to make it out.

As soon as Brent cast that last spell, he hesitated for a split second to await an outcome. His gaze fell on the middle head, the one that was supposed to be daydreaming. Only, it just looked confused for a second then started hissing at him once again. The middle head was obviously not in a daydreaming mood, but guess what dude? That's not exactly an option for you.

In his second of hesitation, he noted that the intense feeling of heat had returned, and he'd started sweating once again. There was seriously no time for a refreshing glass of water, though. Nor was there any time to refreeze the stick he'd collected and ice himself down. He pushed the heat to the back of his mind for now and re-focused his attention on the runespoor. Specifically, he was back to trying to get that middle head into a daydreaming state. "Sentio Somnium!" he again casted, his wand directed toward the head in the middle. As he cast this, he began thinking about what he'd like the middle head to daydream about. The best course of action would be to get it to be perfectly still, its only movement being the rise and fall of its snakey chest as it drew in breaths of air. He willed the snake to daydream about its life as a flower, planted in the ground and unable to move. Maybe it was gently moving toward the beat of wind...or maybe it wasn't even moving at all. Either way, it was as peaceful as a flower perched proudly in a meadow.

With that taken care of, Brent turned his attention to head on the left, which seemed to be in a state of confusion all thanks to the charm he'd cast on it. Now...what about that head on the right? Brent hadn't cast on it, because he thought with it being the one to critique, it'd just turn its attention to being angry at the head on the left. However, that didn't seem to be the case. It was lunging at him, still attempting an attack. At least it'd been slowed to a pace he could handle, though. Something had to be done about it, though. With one head hopefully daydreaming and a second head in a state of confusion, what could he do to the third head to help him along?

Uhh...ummm... "Tentaclifors!" he called out, pointing his wand at the head on the right. If all his efforts proved to be successful, he'd have the head on the left completely confused, the head in the middle daydreaming it was a flower, and the head on the right transfigured into a tentacle. Tentacles didn't have eyes, they certainly didn't hiss and have fangs, and with the Arresto Momentum he'd previously cast on it, it'd hopefully be too slow to pound him.

With the spells he'd cast hopefully buying him a bit of time, Brent made a quick move to pull his previously-conjured drinking cup out his pocket and cast a jet of refreshing water into it. "Aguamenti!" he exclaimed. Funny how he'd always taken water for granted, but now, out here in the depths of the African forest, it had become precious to him. Brent put all his focus into the water and it filling up his cup, for when he was done with it, he had a very specific plan to drop his intent on it altogether. When the cup was nearly full, Brent willed himself to completely forget about the water spell altogether. It was only him and the three heads of the snake. He'd always been taught that losing your focus and intent on a spell would cause it to cease, and Brent needed the water to stop without him having to cast 'Finite'. Merlin help him if he ended up ceasing every spell in the vicinity. Knowing he only had seconds, if even that, to hydrate himself, he tipped the cup toward his mouth and gulped down the water. When he was finished, he pushed the cup back into his pocket, all the while keeping an eye on the three-headed threat lurking nearby.

Had his spells worked?

Wait a minute. Hadn't there been a second line of runes etched into the door? Maybe that was the clue that held the secret to help him! With his wand still at the ready and turned toward the runespoor, Brent walked sideways so as to keep an eye on both the door and the runespoor at the same time. When he got a bit closer to the door, he quickly moved his wand to the door and cast "Lumos!" for a second time.

follow me; everything is all right.

This time the Daydream Charm stuck. The middle head was sticking stark straight up staring at the sky not moving an inch. Concentration is key for this charm however, any distraction you may have can cause it to come out of the daydream. Hopefully it will last long enough.

The left head was still completely confused, your confundus charm worked perfectly, but who’s to say how long it will last. As for the right head, the momentum charm only lasted for a very short time, and as soon as your Tentacle spell was cast, it was able to completely dodge the spell at full speed. But, because the middle head and left head were…preoccupied, it couldn’t move any closer to you even if it tried with all its might! However, you should stay aware of the beast’s position; your spell work will only last so long.

As soon as you cast the Lumos, you see the next line of runes, which reads:
ᛋᚢᛒᛞᚢ ᚦ ᛒᛖᛋᛏ ᛁᚾ ᚾᚨᛏᚱ ᛏᛟ ᛗᚨᚲ ᛁᛏ ᛟᛈᚾ ᚠᛟᚱ ᚦᛖ
I would make quick work of this translation if I were you…

YESSSSSS.

The Daydream Charm must have worked this time, because the head in the middle was standing tall and proud and staring up at the sky, just like the flower Brent had willed it to become. YOU GO, MIDDLE HEAD. YOU CAN BE ANYTHING YOU WANT TO BE. WORRKKKK IT, GIRL! Okay, so he might be getting just a little too pumped up and excited about his war with this beast. But this was the real stuff, man! What added to his excitement was that the head on the left was still in a deep state on confusion. If they'd met in a different time and place, and if perhaps the runespoor wasn't six feet tall and trying to kill him, Brent might wonder what it was so confused about. What was it even thinking?

He had literally 0.0 seconds to think any further on that, though. 'Mr. Head On the Right/No Spell Seems to Work on Me' was at it again. "Aren't you supposed to be critiquing the others?!" he called out, letting the fear speak though him instead of any rational thoughts. But seriously, man! Could this dude NOT do his job?! He couldn't even pull off the whole tentacle act! Brent eyed the head on the right with eyes as big as quaffles. Thank Merlin the spells cast on the other two seemed to be helping keep Righty at bay over there...

He suddenly remembered that he'd casted lumos on the door for a second time, and with half his mind locked in on the beast and what it was doing, Brent half-eyed the message that had recently come to light...
ᛋᚢᛒᛞᚢ ᚦ ᛒᛖᛋᛏ ᛁᚾ ᚾᚨᛏᚱ ᛏᛟ ᛗᚨᚲ ᛁᛏ ᛟᛈᚾ ᚠᛟᚱ ᚦᛖ
Did he even time to translate all of this?!

Let's see...some of these runes were on the first message, and he'd recently etched those into the dirt. There were only a few that hadn't been a part of the first line, but they were simple runes that Brent knew from memory. So what did the message say? ... ... ...

Sowilo = S
Uruz = U
Berkano = B
Dagaz = D
Uruz = U
=========
Thurisaz = TH
=========
Berkano = B
Ehwaz = E
Sowilo = S
Tiwaz = T
=========
Isa = I
Nauthiz = N
=========
Nauthiz = N
Ansuz = A
Tiwaz = T
Raidho = R
=========
Tiwaz = T
Othala = O
=========
Mannaz = M
Ansuz = A
Kenaz = K
Isa = I
Tiwaz = T
=========
Othala = O
Perthro = P
Nauthiz = N
=========
Fehu = F
Othala = O
Raidho = R
Thurisaz = TH
Ehwaz = E

Uhhh... Brent pulled his stick out of his pocket and quickly scrawled the message in the dirt:

Subdu th best in natr to makit opn forthe

... ... ... "Are you kidding me right now?!" he mumbled under his breath. Literally four of those words made any sense to him. "Sub...due. Subdue the best. BEAST. Subdue the beast in..." Brent's voice trailed off. This was it. This was where it all ended, wasn't it? He was going to die right out here in the forest, and he wanted his tombstone to say---'Here lies Brent Westwood, who died of Ancient Runes'. SEE. He knew he was allergic to runes! Siiiiiiigh. "Subdue the beast in...nature to make it open further?" Was that it? What did that even mean?!

HELPPPPPP.

He wasn't ready to die! He wasn't an even a sixth year yet! Were people just watching this on the big screen in the viewing area? If he called for help, would anybody come?! HE WAS LEGITIMATELY GOING TO DIE HERE. He honestly, truthfully had no idea what the clue wanted him to do...or if he even deciphered the message correctly.

Okay, he HAD to get a hold of himself. This was ridiculous. He didn't want to die. He had to fight for it! He had no idea if he had deciphered the runic message correctly or not, but on the off-chance he did, he had to find a way to subdue this three-headed beast before him. Subdue...subdue...subdue He had no time to brew a potion, so that was out of the question. Brent mentally thumbed through the depths of his brain as he thought about anything he might know about subduing a creature. Wait a minute...what about Verdimillious Tria? Wasn't that the spell that if he used it multiple times on a werewolf or beast it would cause said victim to be subdued?! It was worth a try! Let's do this! GAME ON, DUDES. Brent Westwood is back in action! Hold the tombstone, please. He turned toward the beast, his wand gripped tightly in his hand, and made a forward slash toward the head on the left. "Verdimillious Tria!" he called out. Without wasting a second's time, he made a second forward slash toward the head in the middle. Verdimillious Tria!" Then finally, he turned toward the head on the right, the one he probably should have cast on first. Verdimillious Tria!"

Brent wanted this more than anything. He'd had several moments of weakness, but in the very depths of his soul, he wanted this snake to be subdued. It was all he could think about. He wanted to survive. HE WOULD SURVIVE.

Yelling at the right head actually made it look at its other two heads. It hissed loudly at its other heads. Lefty shook his head, as if realizing that he had something important to do, and started hissing back at Righty, then zoned in on you, remembering the threat you imposed. Because you were so focused on getting the Runes translated, the middle head is coming out of its daydream. Though being a flower was wonderful, you are far more enticing.

If I were you, I would check that translation again. Are you sure the last word is ‘further?’ I believe there are two words there…not one.

Soon all three heads are staring you down, all completely coherent and ready to attack. When you struck them each with Verdimillious Tria, they all hissed simultaneously and twitched because of the electrical current. It just made the creature angrier. The Runespoor slowly moved closer, hissing as loudly as it possibly could, roiling with anger and frustration.

The creature lunges!

About two seconds passed before Brent realized this was not going as he planned. He really was going to die right out here in the forest, wasn't he? He had almost convinced himself that those were no longer irrational thoughts, but a real possibility for him. At least he'd gotten the right head to divert its attention to the other two heads, but the head on the left seemed to no longer be confused, and the head in the middle definitely didn't seem like it was still interested in being a flower. This was all before he attempted to subdue them all, though.

"WHOA, WHOA, WHOAAA!" he exclaimed, as realization dawned on him that pretty much nothing was working anymore. ALL THREE HEADS were staring him down. Something had gone terribly wrong, although he had no idea what that might be. When the creature lunged at him, a thought from the second challenge came back to him. "LORICATUS!" he called out, pointing his wand at himself. Temporary armor might not have done him much good in the second challenge, but he was pretty sure of it's usefulness right now. Brent took a step back and eyed the line of runes out of the corner of his eye. It had to be the runes. OF COURSE it was the runes. With most of his eyesight on the runespoor and a bit of attention on the runes, Brent began to review what he'd etched into the dirt. Wait a second...was there a small space there toward the end? Were there two words instead of one? ... ... "FOR THEE! FOR THEE!" he suddenly exclaimed. "Subdue the beast in nature to make it open for thee!"

Please let that be it! Oh, PLEASE let that be it!

With a burst of confidence fueled from the fact that he thought he was now on the right track, Brent turned toward the snake once again. "Verdimillious Tria!" he exclaimed, making a forward slash toward the head on the right. Without missing a beat, he then cast on the head in the middle. "Verdimillious Tria!" Then finally, he made a forward slash toward the head on the left. "Verdimillious Tria!" Again, he focused on subduing the beast with all his might. He might fear death out here, but deep down inside, he would not make it a reality.

If this didn't work, he was fresh out of ideas and was pretty sure he was one long gone Slytherin.

The Loricatus charm took affect just before the Runespoor reached you, causing it to bounce off of you instead of latching on to any of your limbs. Quick thinking on your part! The Runespoor backs up just enough for you to have time to re-read the runes.

Again, when you struck each of the heads with Verdimillious Tria, they all hissed simultaneously, and much louder than previously, twitching a little because of the electrical current. This has no other effects and just makes the creature angrier than it already was.

Trying to tame the beast with charms doesn’t seem to be doing any good. Perhaps you should consider a different branch of magic…

A mixture of pure shock and fear spread across Brent's face as the snake's mouth clamped down on the armor. Seriously?! He was almost afraid to think about how close he'd come to being snake food. The armor seemed to buy him a little time, too, as the runespoor backed away long enough for him to try and come up with another plan. Verdimillious Tria was not working out for him, so he abandoned that idea in hopes of coming up with something better.

Why was this happening now? Why was he having such a hard time getting past one part of a whole challenge, when he'd done so well in all the other ones? He was running out of ideas with this runespoor. He honestly had no idea what he could do to...how had the runic message worded it? Subdue the creature? Yes, that was it. Almost every single charm he'd tried had ultimately failed, so Brent began to thumb through his mind for a better tactic.

His very next thought was something he was ashamed to admit he hadn't thought of long ago. Runes. Yes, Runes. They had actually been at the very heart and soul of every challenge he'd faced so far...in all the rounds. He'd made it a central part of the actions he'd exhibited, so why should right now be any different? When he survived this, he was going to immediately talk to Hawthorne and revisit his opinion on the subject. He felt in his very soul that runes would be the way out of this. Which one, though?

His first thought was Hagalaz, as it brought about a loss of power, and wasn't that what he wanted the snake to experience? However, Hagalaz might backfire on him. He kind of thought it was directed more to the one making the rune rather than the one the rune was for. He needed a rune that would backfire on the runespoor. Wait a second...RUNESpoor! RUNES. The answer had been in the creatures name all along, and he mentally scolded himself for overlooking that. He probably could have accomplished this long ago! Siiiigh. He spared a glance toward the runic messages on the door and thought about a rune that would subdue the snake. His next thought was Thurisaz, which would both protect him and overcome the obstacle before him...aka, the snake. He really didn't have much time to analyze that any further, because once again, he was on borrowed time.

Figuring he no longer needed the stick he'd been carrying around for what seemed like ages, Brent decided to use it to ignite a rune. Gripping it in his left hand while holding his wand in his right hand, Brent began to carve. "Intaglio Thurisaz!" he exclaimed. "Thurisaz, Thurisaz, Thurisaz!" When the rune gave off a glow, he began to chant.

"thurisaz thurisaz thurisaz
th th th th th th th th th
thur thar thur ther thor
thu tha thu the tho
th th th th th th th th th"

When he was finished, he turned the rune toward the snake and willed it to work its magic.

Using Thurisaz to protect yourself just might bring you luck, though the movement of the three heads inching closer just might be a warning that your luck is running out. Are you sure this is the right type of magic to use?

Using charms or runes doesn’t seem to be subduing the Runespoor in nature. Perhaps, the surroundings could be altered to stop the creature before one of its heads sinks its fangs into you.

The angry Runespoor, hisses loudly, preparing to attack, though it is rather cautious because of all the spells and charms you have struck it with so far. The glowing of the runes just make it want to attack you first, before you attack it. The Runespoor lunges! Better think quick!

Seriously?!

This dude would not succumb to literally anything he attempted on it. Brent imagined the armor would get hot and cumbersome soon, and he was anxious to get out of it. Not to mention the fact that staying around here much longer would pretty much put him on a dinner plate for the snake. Just as he thought that, the snake lunged at him, and Brent jumped back just in time to miss it's fatal bite.

"HOW DO I SUBDUE THE FREAKIN' BEAST IN NATURE?!" he thought to himself.

In nature...in nature...

His eyes landed on the very spot in the grass he'd heard the rustling from. He'd always assumed the runespoor had slithered in from that particular area, and for some reason, Brent's attention was brought back to it now. Not just the grass, though, but the roots of a nearby sturdy-looking tree that spread throughout the grass. It was something he was just now noticing,
and the sight of them gave him a bit of hope. "You came from the grass," he suddenly said to the runespoor, "and now, you go back to the grass." Specifically the roots that run through the grass. On that note, Brent took a very quick step back so he was now standing on a rock in the dirt just past where the roots stopped. He needed only the snake to be in that area for his plan to work.

"INCARCIFORS!" he called out. It was a transfiguration spell that transfigured objects into a suitable cage for creatures. As he cast, Brent circled his wand around the patches of root-covered grass the creature stood in. He paid careful attention to making sure his wand pointed right at those sturdy tree branches. The tree had what looked like hundred of roots spreading out in other directions, and since he wasn't casting on all of them, he was pretty sure the tree would survive this while still standing tall and proud. He had to hurry. Once the snake figured out what was going on, especially if the plan started working, it was going to be pretty mad. "INCARCIFORS!" he cast again, still circling the root-covered grass around the snake. "INCARCIFORS!"

He'd cast on a pretty large perimeter around the snake, and more importantly, himself and the door he needed were both outside of that area. He'd be pretty foolish to capture the door inside of that cage, too.

Good thinking to jump out of the path of the striking Runespoor. You are safe for the moment.

Though the Runespoor is swift, it can't maneuver as quickly as you can because of its bulk. But soon enough the beast is preparing to attack again. With your quick thinking in using Incarcifors, the beast is soon unable to move. Your tree root cage quickly encases the Runespoor, confusion spreading across its three heads. The cage is so strong that when the Runespoor tries to bash its way out, nothing happens. It hisses something fierce. You have bested it!

Now that the Runespoor is completely contained, a Ministry official from the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures disillusions themselves, revealing that he had been standing by the door, watching, there the entire time - for both your safety and the runespoor. Seeing that you have subdued the creature, he walks past you without saying a word. The red door creaks open, revealing your way out. Step through the doorway and you will find yourself at the stands.

OOC: You may now look at the viewing area and/or other competitors' threads.

Since literally every other idea he'd previously tried had failed, Brent was almost in a state of shock when his current plan looked to be working out for him. He watched, wide-eyed, as the roots curled upward and into the shape of a cage. The snake must have realized something was happening to it, too, because all three heads seemed to be in a state of confusion. At least they weren't lunging toward him anymore. He wasn't sure he could come up with any more unique ideas at this point, and he had almost been to the point of just yelling out that he'd given up and hoping someone would come for him.

Once the cage had completely surrounded the runespoor, the creature began hissing in anger, and Brent was sure it realized it had been bested. FINALLY. He did a fist pump in the air in celebration, although he was still in a small state of disbelief that something had finally worked out for him. Just as he lowered his wand, someone randomly appeared, and for a second, Brent was taken by surprise. Then it dawned on him that just like three times before, a Ministry of Magic official was closing out the challenge for him.

HE'D DONE IT.

He'd officially passed not only this round, but three others before it. A sense of pride came over him, and he couldn't help the grin that spread across his face. "Thanks, Sir," he said, as the man simply walked right past him. Brent was slightly confused until the red door opened, and by instinct alone, he passed through it.
