Default IMPS Challenge #3 :: Brent Westwood

In spite of the warmer spring weather that was becoming more present with each day at Hogwarts, your body immediately reacts to the sudden change in climate. Not even the vanishing Scottish winter could have prepared you for the frozen tundra that you are now standing in. Snow stands up to your knees, which extends to the mountains surrounding you. Perhaps the view is not a priority, however. Your body begins to shiver from the intense cold that is engulfing you, and it feels like something is biting at every exposed part of your body.

What does this challenge have in store for you? Hopefully you act fast, or you'll freeze before you even find out.

OOC: Post in this thread for your challenge to begin. You will have until July 10th @ 11:59 PM GMT to complete this challenge. Good luck!

Brent closed his eyes and took in a slow, deep breath as he stepped into the arena and therefore into the third challenge of IMPS. He couldn't believe he'd made it three-fourths of the way through IMPS. It wasn't that he didn't have faith and confidence in himself. It was the fact that all sixteen of the chosen champions were really good, and the competition was intense. With the incoming warmer weather, he was expecting to be greeted with intense heat. Maybe even warmth. It had never crossed his mind that there might be a frozen tundra awaiting him. The chill immediately met his body, and his gaze traveled first to the snow standing up to his knees and then to the snow traveling up the mountaintops as far as his eyes could see.

As a California boy, this was intimidating.

As he shivered in response to his new environment, he realized he needed to act fast. He had no idea where he was, but it reminded him of Antarctica, a place he'd only read about in textbooks. If this place was anything like Antarctica, he'd freeze to death unless he found a way to protect himself.

For insulation and warmth, he cast, "Caelum Saepio!" It was a spell he'd used before in this competition, but it was useful, and as the old saying goes, 'Why fix what isn't broken?' With the chill taken care of, he turned his wand to the snow packed around the lower part of his legs. There was seriously a lot of snow around here, more than he'd ever expected to see in his lifetime. He cast a Hot-air Charm on the snow to melt it away from his body, so that he was free to move around and at least create a path for himself. At last, he caught site of his feet again, and he was happy to see they hadn't been frostbitten in the time they'd been buried. He pointed his wand toward his shoes. "Henshu!" he called out, in hopes of giving himself better traction. This wasn't exactly the kind of environment he wanted to go slipping and sliding through. A final spell came to mind, and he began pointing his wand at his body in various places as he cast it. "Impervius!" he exclaimed, hoping he could make his clothes and body waterproof.

He'd insulated himself, gotten the snow away from his legs, given his feet better traction, and made himself waterproof. With the feeling that the environment wasn't going to immediately kill him now, Brent's eyes turned toward the piles of snow surrounding him. There was literally no pathway through the snow, and it would take him forever to use the Hot-air Charm on every inch of snow he encountered. He squinted in concentration as he tried to recall the spell to take large chunks out of an object. He remembered reading that it had once been used to carve out rock and ice, so it could carve a pathway for him, right? "Defodio!" he said.

Well well, for a Californian boy, you sure seem to be well prepared for an Arctic tundra. Let's hope my Dear Hogwartian that all of this preparation will not be all for naught. As you try to cut your way through the many drifts of snow before you, a sudden chilling blast of wind comes at you from the west, thank goodness for that extra traction you have on your feet, for it keeps you in one place as the icy air swirls around you.

As soon as it started, the wind from the west calms and the snow is still once more.

However the calm is brief and once again a strong gust of snowy air hits you, this time from the north.

Does the wind have a specific meaning that you can gain from it? Or are you just caught up in the turbulent winds of the Tundra you are now in?

Despite the fact that he felt very uncomfortable in the environment he'd been thrown into, Brent took some comfort in the fact that he seemed to have succeeded in protecting himself for the time-being. He was slowly making process in cutting his way through the snow, although he had literally no idea where he was going or what he was going to do.

With a watchful eye on his surroundings, he kept cutting through the snow until a sudden blast of wind hurled his way. Brent withdrew his wand and focused on keeping a steady balance. He could almost feel the extra traction on his feet that one of his previous spells had given him. The change in weather was only temporary, and then a calmness in the storm settled in once again. Brent, however, stayed in place, and it was probably a good decision, seeing as a second blast of wind came hurling at him moments later.

His eyebrows narrowed inward. Was the wind changing direction or something? The first blast had come from the left of him, while the second blast had come from straight ahead. It seemed strange that the wind direction had changed so quickly in such a small amount of time. He couldn't ignore that fact. What it some kind of sign? Brent turn to the left and then looked straight ahead. Was the wind going to come from the right of him the next time? Was it operating somewhat like a clock? Several ideas came to him, the first being that he might need to go in the direction the wind was coming from. That'd be the left of him, in a western direction from where he was standing, and then a sharp right turn, which would lead him in a northern direction from where he was standing. Another option was that he could split the two directions in half and go northwest from where was standing.

Before he made any hasty decisions, he decided to cast a gripping charm on his wand hand, so that he wouldn't chance losing his wand to another blast of wind. With his wand gripped tightly and back in his right hand, he tried to think quickly and carefully enough to come up with the right decision. In the end, he decided that he didn't want to travel against the wind, and he took it that the wind was almost trying to push him into a certain direction. Based on the way the wind was blowing, he took that to mean that he should turn in the opposite direction the wind came from, almost like it had tried to blow him in a certain direction.

The first blast had come from the left of him (west), and the second blast had come from in front of him (north). So in other words, he was now heading in a southeast direction. "Defodio!" he exclaimed, and he continued to cut his way through the snow.

You have the right idea My Dear Hogwartian, the wind indeed is a sign, but of what? What can you see and observe as the wind blows against you? You are close in thinking it's blowing you in a certain direction, but is it trying to tell you something. As annoying and as bitterly cold as it is, it is a clue to be interpreted. Can you predict something from it?

It's a good thing you have upped the grip on your wand for such strong winds would certainly tug it from your hands if you hadn't done that and your insulation charm is holding steady, keeping you warm from this unforgiving cold.

As you move southeast, snow keeps piling in the cuts you are making and the north wind is blowing hard against you, hampering any progress in moving eastward and forcing you southwards.

Brent was almost sure he was heading in the correct direction; that is, until the snow kept piling in and filling all the pathways he was cutting, rendering his efforts pretty much useless. He sighed and relaxed his wand by his side for a moment. Although, he still kept a firm grip on it as he tried to re-evaluate his decision. A southeast direction was clearly not working out for him. Of course it wasn't. Why would IMPS be that simple, after all?

As another icy blast of wind came from the north, Brent almost wondered if he was somewhere near Durmstrang. After all, weren't they said to be their friends from the north? It would also somewhat connect to the theme of the second challenge, but at the same time, this was an Ilvermorny versus Hogwarts competition. As far as he knew, Durmstrang wasn't even involved...yet.

Whatever the situation was, Brent needed to make another quick decision. Snow was steadily piling up, and he didn't want to find himself trapped in. As he rolled over a few ideas in his mind, Brent utilized the Hot-air Charm a second time to melt away the snow that had piled up around him. The first blast of wind had come from the west, and the second blast of wind had come from the north. He'd been completely blocked from moving eastward, and he'd been practically forced to head south. It seemed almost too simple, but continuing on in a southern direction seemed to be the most logical thing to do. After all, the wind direction had been practically begging him not to head in any of the other possible directions.

Before continuing south, Brent cast a Silver Shield Spell for protection against the wind that would likely be beating against his back any minute now. He followed that with "Fianto Duri" to give him the advantage of maintaining the shield while also focusing on everything else around him. Feeling pretty confident about his decision and the fact that he was most likely protected against the weather as much as he possibly could, Brent began cutting through the snow once again and heading in a southern direction.

Heading south is exactly what you needed to do, My Dear Mr. Westwood, however as you trudge through the mushy snow you are creating, you missed a vital sign that would have prepared you for what was to come..

Interpreting the wind using Anemoscopy would have given you a clue about what was happening. Winds blowing from the west and north are seen as bad omens, and a wind blowing strong, then going calm, and starting up in another direction forewarns that dire circumstances are on the way.

Too bad you didn't get that warning as the time for predictions are over now and the bad circumstances draw closer with every step south.

The wind gets less harsh as you approach something that becomes more visible with each step. Soon a metal cage, its bars layered in ice, come into view. The lock on the cage is a metal box with a series of random dots. This lock could easily be overlooked though as you look into the cage and see something that stops your heartbeat for a moment.

For inside the magically protected cage, shivering with icy puffs escaping her mouth is a Miss Skylar Diggory.

Dire consequences indeed.

Brent was feeling pretty good about his decision, and as a guy, feeling like he did the right thing was really starting to boost his confidence more by the minute. He trudged his way through the snow, all the while on the look out for whatever was to come. There was a little feeling of dread in the pit of his stomach, but he assumed it was simply a case of the nerves and promptly dismissed it.

The situation seemed to be improving, too, because the wind began to get a little less harsh as he continued on his way. Even still, hadn't the wind done that a few times back when he first arrived? He was mentally trying to remember every move the wind made, just in case it amounted to something later on. He glanced forward just in time to start making out the shape of something different in the snow, something that was clearly out of place. With his wand raised and at the ready, he approached the object with caution. Soon, a metal cage was in full view; only, it wasn't just any metal cage...

"SKYLAR!" he cried out.

It only barely crossed his mind that this could just be dummy-Skylar, much in the same way Gerald the muggle had turned out to be dummy-Gerald in the end. He couldn't afford to take that chance, though. As he rushed forward, it occurred to him just how much he cared for this girl. He'd never told her he loved her, and he still wasn't sure if they were to that point in their relationship; but he felt his heart being smashed into a million tiny pieces all in the one moment it took him to see her shivering inside that cage. He was desperate to find the quickest way to get her out of the cage, but first, he needed to make sure he kept her alive. "Caelum Saepio!" he exclaimed, casting an insulation charm on her. Had she been left completely wandless?! How long had she been here?! "I'm going to get you out of here! Don't you worry... Who did this to you?!" He raised his wand to her a second time. "Impervius!" he called out, because who knew when the next blast of wind would come. As he cast that second spell on her, he drew in a deep breath and released it slowly as he began to give himself a mental pep talk.

Get a hold of yourself, Brent. This isn't real. You're standing in an arena in the middle of an IMPS challenge. This is most likely dummy-Skylar, even though you can't take that chance. She needs you. You can do this.

As he spoke those words to himself, a wave of confidence and determination took over, and he found himself standing to his full height and ready to accept this challenge. His first instinct was to rush forward and grab a hold of the cage, even though he knew that was a horrible idea. Nothing in IMPS was that easy. His second instinct was to cast one of the hundreds of spells he could think of to blast the cage open and rescue his girl, but every scenario he came up with just seemed like it would lead to disaster. So despite the fact that he was anxious to get Skylar out of her metal prison, he acted on neither of his initial instincts and decided to study the metal cage instead.

"You still with me, Miss Sarcastic?" he asked her, although there was a hint of sadness and worry in his tone. "I'm going to get you out there, and we're going to make it back safe and sound, okay? I promise you that." He tried to ignore the slight shaking sound in his voice. "And when I do, I'm going to take you back to Hogsmeade and swing you around for another dance in the streets." As he said that, he wasn't sure if he was trying to convince her or convince himself. Or both. Either way, he meant it, but there was a lot on the line here. As he talked to her, he circled around the cage, studying every part of it his eyes could land on. It was only when he circled it a second time that he saw it.

A metal box with a series of dots on it.

He leaned down to get a better look at his new finding. Stars? The Milky Way? His eyebrows narrowed inward in a mixture of confusion and concern. Did this have something to do with Divination? Perfect. Just perfect. Brent knew as much about Divination as he did about yodeling, which amounted to nothing at all. Or maybe this was focused more on Astronomy? If he squinted really hard, Brent could almost make out a few of the constellations he was most familiar with. "Andromeda," Brent said aloud, as he traced the pattern of the constellation he spoke of. She was captured and chained until she was rescued by Perseus, similar to the situation they were in now. Speaking of Perseus, Brent traced that constellation, as well. Maybe the fact that Perseus had freed Andromeda would play some part in Brent freeing Skylar? It was always worth a shot. Next, he traced Centaurus. "Centaurus," he told Skylar, "because it reminds me of the centaurs, and they know everything about the stars." He thought he was finished until he spotted Orion. Oddly enough, the constellation had always reminded him of a key going through a keyhole, and that made perfect sense to trace considering the situation they were in now. He traced Orion and stopped for the time-being. He studied the metal box, hoping to see some clue of sorts somewhere.

Well Mr.Westwood, while those spells would have warmed up your girlfriend, sadly no magic can penetrate the cage. I do apologize about that. Your spells bounced off the bars and now you find yourself insulated and protected, should any upcoming wind gusts come.

Perhaps though, it is not the box you need to be looking at for clues, it is at the person shivering inside the cage, attempting to say your name.

Miss Diggory is also trying to move a nearly frozen hand up to the cars of the cage, but the cold has made it extremely hard for her to move.

Can you get to that off white piece of.. something in her hand?

Perhaps that is the clue you seek?

As Brent finished tracing some of the constellations that had come to mind, he looked back at his shivering girlfriend and realized his protective spells had done nothing. Nothing...at all. He could feel his heartbeat quicken in panic, and he was almost sure his stomach had started turning flips.

"SKYLAR!" he called out again, although this time it was because a degree of panic had rose inside of him, and he was becoming desperate to help her. In that moment of desperation and somewhat anger, he raised his foot to give the cage a swift kick, but he luckily stopped himself in time. His girlfriend was inside that cage, and as angry and hurt as he was to see her inside of it and shivering like that, he needed to get a level head.

A tiny tear fell down his cheek.

...and then another.

He knelt down beside the cage and lowered his eye level to her own eye level. Yes, he was technically kneeling in the snow, but he was confident in the protective spells he'd cast and didn't think for a second that he was putting his own self in harm's way. "Skylar?" he half-whispered, as he thought he heard a hint of his own name escape her lips. Her icy hand was being raised to his, and at first, he thought she was simply trying to hold his hand.

Then he saw it--something. He couldn't tell what it was just yet, because it was enclosed in her hand. "Is this a clue? Do you know something?" he asked her. "Skylar, how can you help me? What do you know?" He reached out and accepted the off-white object she held out to him. He almost wondered if it was a star chart or something. It would be helpful. A sextant would be useful, too, even though Brent was pretty sure he had no idea how to use one.

Well done Mr.Westwood!

Panic never got anyone anywhere and neither did kicking the cage. Good thing no one saw the tears escaping from your cheeks as well. Or maybe everyone did?

Sadly Skylar can't fully respond to the questions you are asking her, her eyes are looking at you though as you reach into the cage.

As you carefully pry the off white piece of parchment from your girlfriend's hand you feel how icy her fingers are. You need to hurry up and open that cage.

You unroll the parchment you and find a set of numbers on it:

285 6995 19751

Get to it.

A mixture of emotions was still plaguing Brent as he worked through a plan to free Skylar from the cage and get her to safety as quickly as possible. He still wanted to kick the cage or blast it to a million and one tiny little pieces, but he knew that wasn't possible. It was only the anger and hurt talking. Besides that, the cage seemed to be immune to magic, seeing as none of his spells had worked. He paused as a thought occurred to him. The cage was immune to magic, but what about ---...

Brent had already protected himself enough from the weather. He hadn't felt its effects since shortly after he'd turned up in the arctic. He didn't need his socks. He quickly removed his shoe and one sock then quickly put the shoe back on. He laid the sock out before him and pointed his wand toward it. "Inanimatus Conjurus Blanket!" he exclaimed. He had no idea if this would work, but when he was finished with the spell, he pushed the material through the cage and toward her.

He wiped the teardrops from his cheeks and turned his full and undivided attention to the piece of parchment he'd received from her.

"Thank you," he said, because he knew politeness was one of the only things he could do for her at the moment. He just wished she could speak to him...to tell him how she felt and what he could do to help her. "I'm so sorry," he continued. "I'm going to get you out there. I am. I'm going to figure this out, and I'm going to get you to safety." He literally felt like the worst failure of a boyfriend ever. A part of him even wondered if she'd still want to be with him after this. He shook off that feeling the very second it came, though. This was not about him right now. It was about her.

He reached out and gripped her icy hand, hoping to give it some warmth, before finally letting it go to look down at something written on the parchment.

285 6995 19751

Numbers. That was it. Simply numbers. "Excellent," he muttered, a hint of sarcasm in his tone. "They just had to put Divination and Arithmancy together in the same challenge." He looked from the parchment to the star pattern and back again. At least they'd thrown a little bit of Astronomy in the mix, as well. "Arithmancy," he said again. Great. He really should start paying more attention in class...

He started with 2-8-5. As he thought about the numbers, he began thinking about The Pythagorean Number System in his mind. These numbers stood for letters, and if he could spell out a word, he might work his way toward a clue. In the end, Brent came up with:

285 = THE

Seemed legit.

Next was 6995. He needed a four letter word, so he mentally referred back to the numbers-to-letters system to see if he could spell a second word. O-I-R-W? No. That didn't make sense. F-R-I-E? Nope. Wait---FIRE! The Fire...?

So what did he have now?

285 = THE
6995 = FIRE

Finally, he'd been given 19751, which would result in a five-letter-word. Again, he mentally reviewed the numbers-to-letters system. He was almost ashamed to admit the whole 19751 code took him way longer than it probably should. He ended up having to make up random words using the whole numbers-to-letters system, until he was finally able to come up with...

THE FIRE SIGNS.

Was it the answer? He seriously hoped so, because if it wasn't, he was all out of ideas. So were there any fire sign constellations on that star map? "I think I have an idea, Skylar," he said. "Stay with me." Please. "I think I need to trace the fire signs." He moved toward the map of stars to get a better look. The fire signs... What were they?! "Aries, Leo, and ..." WHAT WAS THE LAST ONE?! He couldn't afford to lose time here! There was A LOT at stake! "Aries, Leo, and ...Sagittarius!"

With a hopeful beat to his heart, Brent raised his wand toward the metal lock and began tracing the constellations he spoke of. First Aries, then Leo, and finally Sagittarius. With an unintentional hold of his breath as he anticipated the results, Brent stood back and waited.

Very thoughtful Mr.Westwood, let's hope the blanket you conjured from your sock doesn't smell like stinky feet though. That could be bad. The blanket is pushed through the cage, but since Miss Diggory can't fully seem to move, it falls onto the floor of the cage.

It would have been effective, oh well. Now it's just covering part of her toe.

Let's hope you can solve Arithmancy as well as you can apologize, because that was good. Sadly the only sign that Miss Diggory heard it was a small twitch of her fingers.

Now now now Mr. Westwood, despite your sarcasm, you are doing well in figuring out what the numbers mean. THE was certainly correct.

Oh yes, you have FIRE now as well.

Can you get the last one?

Oh well done! There it is. THE FIRE SIGNS.

And look at you, since you seemed to know what to do next, my hint is no longer needed.

As you trace the constellations, they light up white and then after a few seconds, turn green. the lock clicks and the door to the cage swings open.

Congratulations! You have opened the cage.

Miss Diggory is looking at you with twinkling eyes, but due to how cold she is, she can't move. You need to warm her up and get out of here.

In between waiting on the status of the plan he'd just executed, Brent glanced back into the metal cage with a worried expression on his face. He needed his plan to work, not just because he needed to advance in the challenge, but more importantly because he had to save Skylar. He watched as the blanket he'd conjured fell to the bottom of the cage and landed on her toes.

He could almost feel another burst of sadness and anger boil inside of him. Couldn't the blanket have at least landed across her body?! He looked deep into her eyes and gave her an apologetic expression. He was so sorry. So very sorry. Her fingers twitched, and a hint of hope came to Brent. She'd heard him, and she was stable, because she could at least communicate in some way.

Out of the corner of his eyes, he saw a twinkle of movement from the box he'd just been tracing constellations on. With wide, expectant eyes, he peered at it closely and watched as the magic happened. The traced constellations lit up white then finally turned green. Something was happening, and he had a feeling it was something good! The lock clicked, and the door to Skylar's prison suddenly slung open.

"SKYLAR!" Brent exclaimed, his heart happy once again.

He rushed to the opening of the cage and wasted no time pointing his wand toward his girl. The metal cage had been opened, and so from what he'd gathered, magic could reach her once again. "Caelum Saepio!" he exclaimed, and he very quickly followed that up with, "Impervius!" With the spells cast, he reached into the cage and scooped her into his arms. Grabbing the conjured blanket out of the cage, he wrapped it tightly around her as he cradled her in his arms.

"Are you okay, Miss Sarcastic?" he asked, his tone calm and hopeful and a hint of playfulness present once again. "You don't have to say anything if you can't speak yet. Just give me some kind of sign." As he waited for her reply, whatever it may be, he carried her a small distance away from the cage. He wasn't taking any chances by being near that horrible entrapment.

So what was next? He'd figure that out once he made sure Skylar was okay and healthy enough to move on.

Girlfriend first. IMPS second.

follow me; everything is all right.

Your spells did indeed reach your girlfriend and she's slowly starting to unthaw, but she's still unable to move, so it's a good thing you carried her out of that cage.

The blanket is starting to warm her more, but she still can't speak much. She does blink her eyes at you however, to let you know that she heard you.

As you set her down in the snow and look around, where are you meant to go? Perhaps you should follow the wind again? It was still blowing south.

You still need to help your girlfriend though Mr.Westwood, despite slowly warming up, she's still having trouble walking.

In Brent's mind, the world seemed to stand still as he awaited a sign from his girlfriend. When she blinked, the corners of his mouth lifted into a smile, and the reality of the arctic tundra came hurling back toward him. He had to get them to safety. He'd cast as many protective spells he could think of, but staying in this environment much longer couldn't be good for either of them. Especially Skylar.

Speaking of Skylar, Brent paused in his planning as he realized how much trouble she was having trying to walk. Several ideas came to mind, the first being to cast Reparifors, which was a spell meant to heal someone from paralysis, along with a variety of other ailments. It was the paralysis part he was mainly concerned about, though. He had no idea how she got into the state she was in...was it magically-induced? Simply weather-induced? It couldn't hurt to try, and so Brent pointed his wand toward his girlfriend. "Reparifors!" he exclaimed. His thinking was that if what she'd suffered through in that magical prison had caused her temporary paralysis, the spell he'd just cast might cure her of that. He followed that spell with a Hot-air Charm, which he cast in different parts of her body to help with the thawing out process.

It was probably time to throw in a little more Ancient Runes, and so Brent waved his wand and cast "Focalia!" A conjured pile of firewood gathered at his feet, and he picked up a strong-looking, sturdy piece of it. "Intaglio Raidho!" he exclaimed. He began carving the rune and chanting the galdr to go along with it.

"raidho raidho raidho
r r r r r r r r r
ru ra ri re ro
rudh radh ridh redh rodh
(rut rat rit ret rot)
or er ir ar ur
r r r r r r r r r"

As the rune glowed and was hopefully beginning to show him the way, Brent decided that while the previous spells were hopefully taking effect on his girlfriend, he could at least cast Mobilicorpus to ease some of the effort it'd take for her to completely be revived. "Mobilicorpus!" he exclaimed, again pointing his wand toward his girlfriend. "Hold on tight, Miss Sarcastic. I got this," he promised her. As he said that, he felt another harsh blow of the wind pass by him and head in a southern direction. He'd learned from the beginning of the competition that pretty much all other directions were doomed, and so he figured continuing his journey south was probably the best way to go.

And so with Skylar levitated and hopefully being healed more and more by the minute, Brent guided them in a southern direction while waiting for Raidho to show him any sign it could. It was strange how this round of the competition was putting all the elements into play--Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. He almost wondered if he might be able to predict what he'd encounter next.

The spell indeed seemed to help Miss Diggory, but still she's unable to walk. Though she is starting to be able to move better. A smile comes to her face and words are actually able to come from between lips that are slowly regaining color. “Bre..nt.” She says as she looks up at you. The hot air charm helping her warm up even more.

The rune you carve doesn't show you the way, however it does promote a safe journey ahead.

So with Skylar levitating beside you, you head south, unable to do much else with the force of the wind at your back, you walk for several minutes before the wind shifts, the harsh north wind had been replaced by a wind from the east, one whose gentle breezes prompt you to head west. Where something that looks like a cave can be seen in the distance.

Dare you to see what lays inside?

Brent kept his attention divided equally between checking on Skylar, maintaining her levitation, and continuing their journey south. The wind was beating at his back, and he wished with all his might that he could properly communicate with his girlfriend and make sure she was adequately protected against the elements. He'd cast as many spells as he could think of, and between the conjured blanket and the levitation spell, he was at least comfortable in what he'd done for her.

It was only when he heard the stuttering of his name, that he paused and turned to give her his undivided attention. "We got this, Miss Sarcastic. We're going to be just fine," he promised. He reached over and ran a hand through her hair then planted a soft, simple kiss on her cheek. It was pretty cool how this whole IMPS thing had brought them together. He'd asked her out in front of the entire Hogwarts and Ilvermorny populations in challenge one, and then here they were, an established couple, surviving the third round together.

The wind directions began to change, and so Brent turned his attention back to the pathway ahead of him. The force of the wind seemed to push him westward, and so he turned them both in that direction before continuing along on the journey. Up ahead, he could barely make out a different sort of formation peeking through the icy snow. He slowly came to a stop and squinted at the formation, trying to make out what it was an access the situation. He seriously had no idea what he was guiding them into, and he had a sinking feeling that even though he'd rescued his girlfriend from her metal prison, this challenge was far from over. "It's a cave," he said aloud, trying to reassure both himself and his girlfriend.

It might be a long shot, but it was their best bet in getting out of this icy weather, and if the situation was just right, he might be able to light them a fire. "Hold on tight, Miss Sarcastic," he said, and then with a quick "Finite!" he ended the levitation spell he'd cast on her. As soon as the spell was cast, he scooped her back into his arms, so as not to let her crash right back into the icy depths of the snow. He needed to cast a protective shield around them, because they couldn't just barge unprotected into an unknown cave right here in the middle of the arctic tundra. He first cast a Silver-Shield Spell and followed that up with "Fianto Duri!"

So with Skylar cradled in his arms for the second time in this challenge, Brent guided them toward the cave. As he approached the cave's entrance, he flicked his wand forward. "Lumos!" he exclaimed.

...and then he stepped into the cave---not blindly, of course. He checked for holes below them, creatures ahead of them, anything that may be awaiting them.

While the shield spell was smart Mr. Westwood, there was really no need for it. For as you and Miss Diggory travel deeper into the cave, you feel yourself starting to get warmer and warmer as you distance yourself from the arctic tundra behind you.

You see a bright light ahead and as you walk towards it, the cave slowly transitions to a room with two people in it.

One is a Ministry Official from the Department of Environmental Regulation and Protection waiting for the two of you. The other is a St. Mungos Healer who moves towards you and Miss Diggory as soon as he sees you.

The Healer looks you over quickly and after sending an hot air charm your way and handing you some water, nods to the Ministry Official. "He's fine. He can go now."

"Excellent," the woman official said as she moves to you. "The Healer will need to take a longer look at your girlfriend. You are free to head out now." She motions to a door which will take you to the stands.

OOC: You may now look at the viewing area and/or other competitors' threads.

Brent's eyebrows narrowed inward as he felt a sudden change in temperature engulf him. He almost felt as if the arctic tundra was light years behind him...almost in another day and in another time. Seeing a bright light up ahead, he lowered his wand, which was also giving off a light, and cautiously stepped forward. He very slightly tightened his grip on his girlfriend, as he thought about the fact that he had no idea at all what he was leading them into. He'd cast a protective shield around them, though, so he was as ready as he could be for whatever lied ahead.

He blinked in slight confusion as he abruptly led them out of the cave and into a room of sorts. Was this...it? Huh? Several waves of confusion spread over him as he tried to adjust from the icy cold tundra to the cave and now to the room. He hugged his girlfriend closer to him, not anxious to let her go, as they were approached by a Ministry Official and a Healer. "So I just go now? Without her?" he asked. There was something about surviving a near-death experience that could bring two people closer together, and the thought of just handing Skylar over to these two strangers was frightening to him. "Where are you taking her?"

There were so many questions, but he pretty much had no choice in the matter as one of the adults began to show him the way out. He was barely able to take one last glance at his girlfriend before he was out the door and back to the viewing stands.
