Default IMPS Challenge #2 :: Henrietta Kramer

Your teeth may or may not be chattering as you walk along a pathway that is covered in a layer of freshly fallen snow. The pathway soon comes to an end beside a large stone, a subtle warning that treading any further will mean putting oneself at risk. Standing before you, in all of her glory, is the Whomping Willow. Currently the tree remains still, icicles glistening from her branches. But something about them seems a little off...

What is your next move? Dare you take a closer look?

OOC: Post in this thread for your challenge to begin. You will have until June 20th @ 11:59 PM GMT to complete this challenge. Good luck!

SUMMER FOREVER

Etta was warmly dressed as she made her way down the pathway, the snow crunching lightly under her feet.. but the layers of clothing didn't make a difference at all. It was still extremely cold.. the chilly air making her cheeks turn red. She could never get used to winter. Never. She continued walking slowly, her eyes on the ground, making sure she didn't trip unexpectedly and end up hurting herself. That would be just her luck.

All of a sudden, she found herself right next to the stone that stood in front of the whomping willow. She came to a abrupt stop and stared at the massive tree.. her eyes filled with wonder and confusion. Firstly, what did she know about the whomping willow? It was very violent, of course. It attacked anyone or anything that came within the reach of it's huge branches. Second of all, it was very old and rare. Thirdly, she also knew that it was planted to hide an opening to a secret passage that led to Hogsmeade.

A frown settled between her brows as she stared at the branches extending from the Willow, thinking something was off. She couldn't exactly point out what it was.. except that the tree or rather, it's branches, looked way too still. Was it because of the cold or something else? To find out, Etta had to move closer to the Willow but she hesitated. What if she was wrong, though? What if she risked getting hurt? She pulled out her wand and took a step forward. Oh, well. There was no point in thinking too much about it.

The only way to find out was to take a closer look. She casted a feather-light charm on herself first before she took a few more steps towards the Willow, her eyes completely focused on the branches for any sign of sudden movement.. and even if there was, she would be ready for it. But, something was not okay.. she could feel it.

The Willow’s eerie stillness might fill you with an odd feeling. Since when had this monstrous tree ever held still when so close to another living being? Don’t take your eyes off the branches, now. How familiar are you with this tree? Ever ventured near?

There is a cauldron on the ground, one that you trip over in your slow quest forward. Located inside the cauldron is a note. It reads:

"Well, this isn't a hat. Get on with it! Make your way to the passage beneath the tree."

A breeze tickles the icicles like wind chimes, almost a song in this silent, frozen landscape. On closer inspection, though, you might notice they aren’t icicles at all; they’re frozen potions ingredients. Vials are made of glass. How best to approach the process of retrieving ingredients? Best decide quickly. The tree might not stay still for long. There is a small workstation close by to make potioneering much easier in these extreme circumstances.

.....Was that a branch above you, swaying ominously?

OOC: Feel free to decide which ingredients your character retrieves and what potion she will make.

SUMMER FOREVER

Etta continued walking slowly, careful to keep her eyes on the branches of the tree. She was starting to get more nervous with each step she took. How was the Willow so still? Didn't it have the reputation of attacking anything that came close to it? And here she was, almost next to the trunk of the Willow and.. there was no movement at all. She had been right. This was really weird but what could she do? What was she supposed to do? She came to an abrupt stop and stared at the branches for another couple of seconds, chewing her lower lip in thought before taking another few steps forward.. and tripped over something.

She refrained from yelling out loud, her heart thumping loudly. Oh, goodness. She backed away immediately and noticed that it was a cauldron.. just a cauldron. Phew. She'd been so focused on the Willow that she had completely missed the cauldron on the ground. What even? What was it doing there? Her mind raced with ideas as she stared at it suspiciously. Was it.. the entrance to the secret passageway, maybe? Or did it have another purpose? A sign of some kind? Frowning, she lifted it carefully and examined it, realising that there was note placed inside. Interesting.. she slowly reached for it, placing the cauldron back on the ground. She read the one line written on it with a raised eyebrow. She had to find the entrance to the passageway now? She tucked it away carefully into a pocket, her gaze shifting towards the branches once again. They still remained eerily calm.

BRRR. It was really starting to get cold. She rubbed her hands together for some warmth, the crisp cold air really making her crave for some hot chocolate right about now. She sighed and continued circling the tree slowly as the frown that had settled between her brows deepened. She stopped and squinted up at the frozen branches once more as they swayed gently in the breeze.. Wait. That sound.. it was weird. Uh. She was a little hesitant to use magic and figure out what was going on since that sound had appeared to come from the branches. The prospect of getting attacked by the Willow was scary, to say the least. So she waited patiently and listened. Oh, there it was again. It sounded like wind chimes, didn't it? She focused on the branch closest to the ground, her eyes narrowing slightly. She had been wrong to assume, of course. Those were not frozen ice-particles.. but glass vials. She stared, her features clouded with confusion.. but only for a moment. Her immediate task was to retrieve them but.. how? She had to use magic, of course. What spell would be best? The summoning charm would be rather tedious and time-consuming so she decided to go with a levitation charm. Shed used it a million times before so it was better to go with what was comfortable, yes?

Etta pulled out her wand and aimed it at the Willow. She took a deep breath and concentrated, the image of a glass vial clearly etched in her mind before casting a simple levitation charm. "Wingardium Leviosa." She whispered softly, slowly moving the tiny glass vials to the ground. There seemed to be quite a few of them.. what did they contain? What were they to be used for? She quickly moved to examine them, her surprise growing with every second that passed. They held.. ingredients to a potion. OH! She sat back on her knees, turning to look back at the empty cauldron. Anyway, there wasn't too much time to waste. She carefully studied the contents of each vial more slowly and carefully this time. Okay so.. she unscrewed the lid of the first vial. Looked like lavender leaves.. right. The next.. citrus leaves.. basil leaves.. rosemary leaves.. hyssop leaves.. they could be used to make a concentration concoction. Now, what? Etta wasn't sure. Was she to make the potion or..? She pulled out the note she had found in the cauldron earlier and stared at it. Was she to find the secret passageway? What was the next step that she had to take?

.....Hang on, hang on. Etta looked up to find the branch above her swaying all of a sudden.. Her eyes widened in panic. Oh, no. She looked around and spotted a workstation nearby.. uh. How had she not noticed it before? Anyway. She levitated the vials once again and placed them on the top of the workstation before she quickly moved out of the way. Looked like the tree was back to it's old self again.

There was more movement. The tree’s branches were almost stretching, as if after a long slumber, shaking the tinkling vials that dangled on its branches. The levitation spell hadn’t triggered any anger from the tree; in fact, it seemed to not notice it. But as soon as the girl moved to the work station, it sprang into action.

A branch as thick as Henrietta’s skull THWACKED downward, hard. Had it made contact with the girl? Was the work station still in tact? Had all her vials survived?

Another few branches came swinging from her left low to ground, heading right for her ankles. Icicles shattered on the ground like glass; others held onto their branches for life, but smashed as they made contact with whatever got in the way of the branches, whether it be the ground, rocks, the girl, anything else.

Etta knew that the work-station was a bad idea the second she had noticed the branch above her move. It was way too close to the tree.. a late realisation, unfortunately. Obviously, she should have made a run for it. What had she been thinking? The problem was that she clearly hadn't been thinking at ALL and it was a stupid mistake.. but anyway, it wasn't too late now, was it? Her eyes were still focused on the tree, scared to shift her attention anywhere else even for the slightest second. The Willow was unpredictable and now that it looked like it was slowly coming alive, she had to think fast. Her immediate thought was to run but no.. too late. Too late.

WOAH!

She quickly ducked and rolled out of the way as a huge branch, a branch that looked double her size, suddenly came swinging in her direction, aiming straight for her head. Wow, that was a narrow escape. She got back on her feet, her gaze flickering towards the vials on the workstation. They seemed safe and sound luckily.. for now, at least. Her first plan of action was to move them to a more secure location where they would be completely out of reach from the nasty branches of the Willow. At this point, thanks to her increased speed, she just about managed to dodge the branches that now came swinging low.. aiming for legs. What was it's problem? Not the point now, Etta. Concentrate on moving the vials. It was hard to focus on casting a spell when one was basically fighting to save their life but the girl somehow managed to levitate the vials to an area somewhere near the warning stone at the front.. but thanks to her momentary lapse in concentration, she ended up tripping over a branch and fell to the ground. Hard. Ouch, that hurt. But she barely had a second to recover when the Willow took that opportunity to aim for her head again. SERIOUSLY? She quickly got to her feet, ducking to avoid another branch. Also.. the sound of the icicles smashing.. crashing against whatever the branches made contact with.. was starting to make her cringe and grit her teeth with annoyance and frustration. Not important, Etta. Focus.

How to counter-attack this tree, though? She knew that she had to temporarily relax it's branches.. something simple but effective too. A freezing spell, maybe? Immobulus should work, yes? That was the only spell she could think of in her current situation anyway.. and besides, there was no time. The Willow seemed to be getting more and more aggressive so if too much time passed, she'd end up on the losing side. Taking a couple of steps back, she raised her wand and aimed it straight at the tree. "Immobulus!" She paused, watching the branches cautiously. That should work, yeah?

Not one hit? The Willow stretched branches back in order to sling them forward to ram into the Hogwartian girl when she used the freezing charm on it. It stopped, suddenly, mid-swat. Better brew your potion quickly, young badger. You don’t have all day.

The Whomping Willow will soon start moving again, and this time, you might not be so lucky.

SUMMER FOREVER

Etta watched the tree freeze the second she cast the spell, her face clearly showing relief. Honestly, if that spell hadn't worked, she would have probably been seriously injured. Giving the tree another look, she quickly made her way to where the cauldron was and picked it up before hurrying back to where the stone was at the front. She wondered what the note was for, though. What did that have to do with anything? She was not clear on whether she had to find the passage or focus on the brewing the potion.. but she decided to go with the latter. Might as well finish it before moving on the next task, yeah? Although.. she kneeled down next to where the ingredients were, looking more than a little worried. This potion was difficult to brew.. and now that she was almost freezing with a crazy tree looking to attack her at some point, it was going to be even more difficult. Could she even do it? She had to give it a try, though. She absently stared at the vials for a few long seconds before deciding to go for it. There was no point in just waiting, anyway.

From the ingredients that were available, it looked like the only potion that she could make was the concentration concoction. She remembered, having made it a while ago.. so she tried to recollect every step of the procedure, hoping against hope that she didn't miss even a step. As far as brewing a potion was concerned, if there was a mistake, even the tiniest of mistakes, she would end up messing up the entire potion.. which only made her panic a little. First, she decided to cast a hot-air charm on herself. The cold-breeze was only making her shiver so a little warmth would be nice and help her concentrate as well. Once she was settled comfortably on the ground, her gaze momentarily flickered towards the Willow for a second. Yes, still frozen. So, now that she had some time.. she quickly moved her vials and the cauldron to the work-station. Time to start brewing the potion. What was the first step again? Oh, yes. Water. This potion required a lot of water. But first, she used Scourgify to clean the cauldron completely. It looked clean enough but it was always better to be careful. Next, she casted an aguamenti in the cauldron.. and stopped until she felt that the water was sufficient enough. She peeked into the cauldron for a second. Yeah.. about one liter of water. She couldn't measure the water, unfortunately. She casted a heating charm next and waited for the water to come to a boil.. meanwhile, she went through all the glass vials, making sure that she had everything necessary to brew the potion.

Soon enough, the water was boiling. Right.. now, what? What went in next? She racked her brains for a moment before realising that she had to soak the Ginkgo Biloba seeds in hot water first. She grabbed a small bowl and a spoon that had been made available on the work-station, thankfully. The girl poured the seeds into the bowl first before adding two teaspoons of the hot water from the cauldron and let the seeds soak in the water for a while. Moving on.. She opened the vial containing the Ginkgo Biloba leaves and dropped them on to the surface, studying them for a minute. They had to be sliced carefully.. and the strips should be about 2mm wide? Or was it 3mm? No.. 3mm would be too wide. Confusion and panic flooded her face for a second, her eyes widening. Oh, gosh. She wasn't sure. Tick, tock. Etta glanced at the tree before giving a small shake of the head. She had to continue.. as fast as possible. She decided to go with 2mm. Her tongue sticking out of the corner of her mouth, she carefully sliced the leaves at about a width of about 2mm approximately. Once she was done, still feeling the panic rising inside of her.. Etta proceeded to add them to the boiling water. Now that the seeds were properly soaked, she put them in the mortar and quickly started to grind them to a paste with a pestle, her gaze still occasionally flickering towards the Willow to make sure it hadn't started moving yet. Within a couple of minutes, she had a fine paste. That didn't take long.. phew. She immediately added it to the cauldron as well, making sure she didn't end up splashing the hot water on her.

So far, so good. It was time to add the leaves now, yes? She counted the Hyssop leaves first to make sure there were exactly twenty before adding them one by one carefully. Once she was done, she moved on to her next bundle of peppermint leaves. Counting once again to make sure there were eighteen leaves, she slowly added them to the mixture as well. Next.. her sixteen basil leaves, fourteen rosemary leaves, 12 citrus leaves, ten lavender leaves and finally eight lavender buds. .... OH. There was a tea candle too.. along with the ingredients. The candle was THE most important ingredient honestly.. the potion literally wouldn't work without it. She set it up on the work-station.. but it needed to be near eye-level, didn't it? She lit the candle using incendio before kneeling down on the ground, her eyes completely focused on the flame. She let her mind go blank as she meditated, taking deep breaths, trying to concentrate as much as possible. She kept her gaze and attention completely focused on the candle, not letting her mind divert at all. After what felt like forever but it was only about fifteen minutes or so.. or maybe a couple of minutes less.. she stood up and got to work again. She reached for the candle and carefully held it over the cauldron, pouring the wax into the brew.

She picked up her wand, her mind suddenly feeling blank. Wait. Wait. WAIT. She closed her eyes and tried to remember the incantation that was to be used.. oh, GOODNESS. Oh, goodness. Oh, she knew it but for some reason.. her brain just wasn't responding. Or maybe she genuinely forgot. After wasting close to five minutes, she finally remembered. Mentis Apertus Okay, okay. She slowly moved her wand in a circle around the cauldron and said, "Mentis Apertus." She repeated it another couple of times before setting her wand down. The panic and the stress was starting to make her sweat.. UGH. Gross. She wiped her forehead, already feeling exhausted. Using a spoon, she carefully fished out all the leaves and flowers from the cauldron. This was taking so much time.. Hurry, Etta. Finally, she put them all in the mortar and used the pestle to grind them into a paste. Thankfully, it didn't take very long. Within a minute, it had formed a very smooth paste which she added to the potion.

Etta was pretty sure she was almost done with the concoction at this point. She gave an audible sigh of relief although she was still very nervous about getting hit by the Willow any second. But, she could cast another freezing spell the second it woke up so.. she was still quite safe for now. She stirred the potion slowly for about twenty times.. or was it thirty? She was never sure about these things. Did it even matter? What if you stir less? Did it make a difference to the potion? Unfortunately, she couldn't find out the answers to these questions at present. Once she finished stirring about 20 times, Etta finally turned off the heat. FINALLY. She picked up two of the empty vials and placed them next to the cauldron and used scourgify to clean them. She slowly filled one vial with the completed potion, then the other.. and there was still some left. WELL. She cleaned another vial before she filled it with the remaining brew. She secured their lids tightly and stared at the contents through the glass. Uh. ............ UH. Hold on. Did she just hear something? She took a couple of steps backwards, dropping the vials into her pocket for safety before raising her wand. Was it the Willow? Or had she just imagined it?

With the potion now brewed, the Hogwartian should be able to move on, right? What a tedious process it had been, and the Willow’s thick trunk began to creak in agitation. Suddenly, a branch slammed downward to greet Henrietta.

What was she waiting for? Did she know where the entrance into the passageway was? There is a hole located somewhere in the mangled roots where the girl could slide into, and it would, perhaps on closer inspection, lead to the desired passageway.

But the tree isn’t letting you close yet. Another branch, this one with countless vials attached, rammed into her chest (or did she duck in time?!)

Badger, you need to hurry! The Whomping Willow is angry. A bundle of intertwined branches, all as thick as the girl’s leg, rammed into the ground near her, making the ground shake and grumble as if Scotland were suddenly experiencing an unexpected earthquake. But that is not the anomaly happening here, no. Run.

Run, girl.

SUMMER FOREVER

Etta stared at the tree, alert and watchful. She was quite aware that it couldn't remain still for long so she debated casting another freezing spell. That would work, yeah? She had her wand raised and when she was just about to throw the spell at the massive tree standing tall in front of her, she had a feeling that it could read her mind because the next second, she watched in horror as a giant branch.. and she wasn't kidding.. it was freaking HUGE as it came flying downwards, right towards her. She screamed and threw herself to the side, suddenly feeling very thankful for the blanket the snow everywhere. At least, that fall wasn't going to give her an injury or a bruise. The girl quickly scrambled to her feet, the shock clearly registered on her face, roughly pushing her hair out of her face. How did it even KNOW? Maybe the Willow could actually read minds.. or maybe it just wanted to seriously hurt her. Yeah, that was it. But, obviously, she couldn't just stand there thinking why the tree was acting the way it did and decided to move on to her next plan of action.

.. which was to find the secret passageway. The only thing she knew that the entrance was somewhere near the base of the tree but how was she even going to get anywhere even remotely close? She casted another feather-light charm on herself just as a branch came flying at her from her left that she quickly dodged. She could actually walk backwards and escape, taking the route that had led her to the willow in the first place but what would be the point? When she had to enter the passageway? She had to figure out a way to get closer and the only solution that she could think of at present was to cast another freezing spell and find the entrance but it seemed like the tree wasn't going to let her do that at all. Branches seemed to be coming at her from all directions and.. they seemed to look particularly big and nasty all of a sudden. Were the branches normally this thick? Or was she noticing them properly for the first time?

But, then it happened. Even after trying really hard to not get hit, a branch came out of nowhere, literally nowhere. For a second, she saw it right in front of her but there was no time to move..and she ended up getting rammed right in the chest. She flew backwards, landing on her back a few feet away.. again, thankful for the snow. The pain though.. small tears escaped from the corners of her eyes. It hurt, it hurt so bad. After a minute or so, she slowly tried to sit up, every movement was making her want to scream in frustration. But, crying wasn't going to help now, was it? She gritted her teeth, trying to think of all the healing spells she knew.. unfortunately, the girl didn't know all that many. Why would she, really? She'd never bothered to learn since there was a healer at the hospital wing to take care of injuries.. This didn't really seem like a fatal injury, though. She wasn't bleeding or anything.. AND she was still breathing, so they were positive signs, right? Had she broken bones? Etta had no idea. Where was her wand? She looked around and found it lying close-by. Oh, gosh. Tears still sliding down her cheeks, she forced herself to crawl towards where it was. Oh, the pain. OW-FREAKING-OUCH. The Hufflepuff finally held her wand between her fingers, considering her current situation. It was a sad situation, honestly.. and she blamed herself for it. She bit her lip as she tried ignoring her broken body for a second and wondered if.. episkey would work? It was used for minor injuries, yes? and broken bones too, if she wasn't mistaken. It was worth a try, anyway. Pointing the wand at herself, she casted the spell.. and waited.

It seemed to have worked.. or she thought it did since the pain seemed to have reduced drastically. She was surprised, to say the least. Within a few seconds, she went from a whole lot of pain to no pain at all. She still felt a bit sore but it wasn't too bad. She slowly got to her feet and walked towards the Willow once again, stopping at a point where she was just out of reach of it's branches. Another feather-light charm.. and she was prepared. Oh, wait. Hang on. She decided to cast a silver-shield spell as well before adding a Fianto Duri to strengthen the shield spell. Okay, now she ready. She slowly started to move closer to the Willow once again, which seemed to have sensed her presence almost immediately. The branches started to swing more aggressively but Etta was way more careful this time. She avoided every branch that came towards her, cautiously and very slowly making her way around the tree, trying to figure out where the entrance could be.

But just then.. when she was just about to move, a gigantic bundle of branches suddenly crashed into the ground next to her. Woah.. was it trying to scare her? Because it was totally working.. she held out her arms for balance, making sure she didn't fall, her eyes still alert for any purposeful branch that tried to aim for her head. But, she was also starting to lose patience at this point. Without giving it a second thought, she pointed her wand at the Willow and shouted, "Immobulus." Stay frozen, you stupid tree. If she could do it once, it made sense to repeat it.. yeah? Again, without pausing to give it another thought, the girl quickly made her way towards the mangled roots and started to search for any sign of clue that could lead her to the passageway. Tucking her wand in a pocket, she used to her hands to quickly rummage through the roots.. not sure if this would wake the tree up but didn't wait to find it. She continued looking aaand looking, starting to think that this was probably a fruitless attempt.. when she finally came across something. BLINK. A hole..right at the bottom. It wasn't very big but it definitely looked big enough for her to slide in. She frowned, hesitating only for a second. She wasn't certain if this was really the entrance but there was no harm in checking it out, right? Besides, at this point, it seemed like a good idea to explore a dark, creepy and smelly hole than face the wrath of the Willow. Tucking her wand in a pocket and making sure that her vials were safe too.. the girl took a deep breath and sat down, her legs dangling at the edge of the hole. Here we go. The next second, she carefully slid down.

follow me; everything is all right.

It had made its target, and it would have kept trying to protect itself from the potential “threat” had she not sent a spell the Willow’s way. It froze; not an inch could it move. The silence and stillness was almost unnerving considering mere seconds ago it had been trying to forcibly remove Henrietta’s presence from its space. Lucky that the healing spell worked on you, Hogwartian. It might be wise to have Healer Reed check it after the challenge is over, though. You can never be too careful.

Down the hole and into the darkness you go! The utter black in all directions is not comforting; it is quiet down here, considering this passageway is likely underground. Keep forward. Keep going. Your potioneering has winded down your time left, and there is still much to this challenge.

At the end of the dark passageway is a door. Dare go inside? Are you brave enough to continue on?

It was really quite dark as she slipped into the hole, unable to cast a lumos since her hands were busy holding on to the sides for support. She had a million questions race through her mind as she climbed down very slowly and.. hey, they were not pleasant thoughts. Where exactly did this passageway lead to? Was it actually a passageway or just another trap? Was she going to have to face something worse than a dementor down there? She gulped, almost losing balance in the process. How deep was this hole, anyway? She felt like it was taking forever when it had only been a few minutes. Dramatic girl was being extra dramatic. She didn't have to panic for long though because soon enough, she dropped into what seemed like a very narrow-looking tunnel. She was simply guessing, of course. The dark was almost blinding.

She reached for the wand in her pocket and pulled it out before casting a lumos. Phew.. Etta watched as bright light flooded the passage. She took a moment to survey her surroundings but wished she hadn't. It was creepy.. creepier that she could have ever imagined. It was quite narrow and also, eerily quiet. Like.. something was just waiting to come at her any second. But, she knew she was also being a tad bit ridiculous. She had managed to survive the Whomping Willow.. how much worse could it get? Besides, every second was precious. She'd spent enough time preparing the potion as it is so surely, there wasn't much time left. Trying to shake all the unnecessary thoughts from her mind, she took a few cautions steps forward. From what she could tell, except for a couple of mouse-looking creatures trying to look for food, she seemed to be the only one down there. So, it looked like she was pretty safe, for the moment.

She started to walk briskly down the tunnel. It was an underground passage, after all.. she shouldn't expect it to be any different, it was supposed to be eerie, but a small part of her was still panicking slightly. But suddenly, when she was least expecting it, the girl was starting to feel a little bit of pain again, from where the branch had hit her earlier. Oh, no. She paused for a moment, clutching at her jacket. NOPE. This couldn't be happening. The last thing she wanted was to collapse.. ugh. She cringed slightly and hoped it wasn't something serious. Please, she had to finish this. She stood still and closed her eyes but the pain subsided within a few seconds so with a sigh of relief, she started to walk again, and this time her pace increased. She knew she had to see the Healer later. Maybe she'd ended up breaking a bone or two, after all.

... and there was a door at the end. Etta came to an abrupt stop and focused the light from her wand on the door, her face filled with curiosity. Where did it lead to? Was something hidden inside? Like a treasure? Or would she open it to find a monster inside? She took a few more tiny steps until she was standing right next to the door. She decided to cast a non-verbal silver-shield spell and a feather-light charm.. in case there was an attack. She had to be prepared, after all. Taking a deep breath and feeling like she was somewhat ready, the girl gently pushed the door open, it's hinges creaking loudly. What was inside?

follow me; everything is all right.

Try to ignore your pain. What lies ahead doesn’t require as much physical strength as before; you need smarts, intelligence. How will you fare?

The light from your wand makes your way easier. Creeeaaaaaaaaaaaak goes the door as you push it open, and the Shrieking Shack greets you with a musty, dusty spell. On the floor a few feet from the entranceway is a rolled up piece of parchment, yellowing in color. It’s a curious item, and the words held within are even curiouser.

They read:

*Click Me*

Text Cut: Text Only
Remember: things are not always as they seem,
And with odd trinkets this shack does teem.
In the time remaining, you must find your way
And locate two items that have gone astray;

One is held dear to our pigletted friends.
It can’t build a home, but a house it does amend
To every boy and girl cherished at the castle,
But you won’t find it without much hassle.

You’re looking for a lever that unlocks a door,
But to find the item you might need a particular score.
Try them all, and you will see. Something is off.
Dust covers this place like an infernal cough.

Now, our next item is from across the seas.
It can attach and reattach as you please.
It doesn’t write; it surely isn’t a quill,
And it’s small in size as well as beautiful.

Twist clockwise and nothing you’ll get,
But counter that, and you might regret
The noxious gas that fills your space
If you turn it too quickly, wood it would deface.

Good luck, champions. Find them both here.
Look with your eyes, hear with your ears.
Search up and down, and then high and low,
But don’t be too hasty or too slow.

Is it clear what you must do now? Or has the riddle confused you more?

OOC: Here is a floor plan provided OOC to make it easier to RP your character exploring the shack. Feel free to be as creative as possible.

SUMMER FOREVER

Etta watched the door slowly open, a musty smell greeting her. She frowned as she took a step into what appeared to be an abandoned room.. the light from her wand helped her to view the room carefully for any signs of danger but it seemed to be quite empty. Okay.. she slowly stepped inside, the dust making her sneeze a few times. Ugh. Apparently, this place.. whatever it was.. hadn't been cleaned in years. Or centuries, probably. It took her couple of seconds to recollect what she'd read about the whomping willow a long time back. Wasn't the passageway supposed to connect to the shrieking shack? Was this the shack? She looked around for a moment, moving her wand all around to help her get a more clear view of her surroundings.. a tiny kitchen, dining area, a couch and armchairs.. a fireplace.. when she suddenly spotted something out of the corner of her eye. On the floor. She took a couple of more steps and flashed her lumos on the ground. It looked like a parchment. She picked it up carefully, her fingers carefully pulling it open and read it's contents.

It was a riddle. Her expression filled with surprise and curiosity, she read it a couple more times to make sure she understood it properly. It wasn't really THAT hard to figure out. She basically had to find two objects; the first one was a key.. she assumed. A key to what, exactly? To the main door of the shack? But, that kind of didn't make sense. Besides, how was she to find something as small as a key? It could be hidden almost anywhere. Unfortunately, the riddle didn't seem to exactly help with how or where to search for the hidden objects but obviously, if she had the location too, it would hardly take seconds to complete the task. She was going to have to look through the entire shack. Not a very pleasant task. The next object, however, was a little tricky. Across the seas -- okay. She assumed it was from America. Not a quill, small in size and beautiful.. twist clockwise and nothing but counter-clockwise.. Hang on. Wait. The only thing that seemed logical to her was.. a stove knob? BLINK. Because if you turned it to the right, there was nothing but to the left.. you can smell gas but if you turn it quickly, a fire.. and the riddle did mention 'wood it would deface.' Plus, those knobs could be attached and reattached, from what she knew. How random was that, though? And really, was a stove knob 'beautiful'? She refrained from rolling her eyes as she continued studying the parchment in her hands, trying to make sense of it. .. but then decided to go for it and search. She might as well be right, after all.

But, first and foremost, she decided to cast a cleaning charm everywhere first to clear the space of spider-webs and dust. The last thing she wanted was to end up with a dust allergy or.. a cold. Once that was done, she started to walk towards the dining area first. The light from her wand showed how old it was. The dining table seemed broken and there were cracks visible everywhere whereas the seats of the chairs were torn. It really wasn't possible for something to be hidden anywhere near there, yes? But, the girl still gave it a go. She quickly looked beneath the table, felt the tattered chairs for any sign of an object hidden but nothing. With that, she moved towards the small kitchen and searched quickly, wishing she knew a spell that could make this job easier. She'd heard about the stealth-sensoring spell but wasn't it only to find people hiding under magical concealments? Or did it apply to hidden objects as well? Etta wasn't entirely sure. After a few minutes, she came up with nothing. Again. She studied the stove knobs curiously, for a few seconds or so, before making her way to the other end of the floor. The moth-eaten armchairs and sofa yielded nothing, the smallest hint of distaste on her face. How could a place be so unkempt? It was none of her business anyway. Moving on. She sat next to the fireplace, which didn't seem to have a grate and casted a lumos maxima to get better visibility. ....... YUCK. Was that a.. RAT? She was on her feet the next second as she watched the little creature escape through a small hole at the back. She did have the sudden urge to puke.. ugh. How was a person to search through so much dust and.. what looked like rat-droppings? Shaking her head disapprovingly, she sat down on her knees again, using a scouring charm to clean the fireplace completely. Now, to search.

Etta, her lumos maxima shining as bright as the sun, leaned forward slowly. Her eyes scanning the area with concentration, she used her free hand to search the fireplace, even looking up at the chimney to make sure there was nothing tucked away in there. Just when she was about to give up, she noticed the hole once again. The hole through which the rat had escaped earlier. She was pretty confident that it would be empty but.. there was no harm in having a look. It was neatly tucked away in the corner at the back, probably not visible to the naked eye. One would tend to miss it. Thank goodness for lumos maxima. The girl leaned forward before laying almost flat and squinted.. UGH, EW. The inside of the hole looked a hundred times worse than the shack but she could see something glint in the light. Glinting very clearly.. what was it, though? She really hated having to do this, more than anything she'd ever done in her entire life but the girl carefully sneaked a hand in and hoped that she wouldn't end up getting bitten by a rat.. or something worse. After what felt like ages, Etta grabbed whatever it was before slowly dragging her hand back out, reminding herself to wash her hands with a lot of disinfectant later. Having pulled it out, she stood up and stared at the object sitting on the palm of her hand. It was a stove knob.. so she had been right. She used an auguamenti to wash her hand AND the knob before casting a hot-air charm to dry it out. Tucking it away in her pocket, she went looking for the next item.

Having looked through the entire area once again just to make sure, she headed towards the staircase that lead to the first floor. The wooden steps seemed to protest loudly with each step which made Etta wonder if one of them would end up collapsing. But she made it to the top, safe and sound, and paused. She studied her surroundings once again, her eyebrows slightly raised. A bed, piano, a study table.. and what resembled a reading area. She used another scouring charm to clean the area thoroughly to rid the place completely of dust before starting to make a search. Where to start? She looked around for a bit before deciding to start with the bed area. She pulled up the dirty-looking mattress, looked underneath the bed, searched through the drawers.. but nothing. Exasperated, she walked towards the reading area but again.. came up empty. This was proving to be quite exhausting, really. But, she would be done with it soon. Likewise, the study table came up empty as well and the fireplace didn't prove to be as lucky as the one downstairs. She stood for a moment, feeling completely out of sorts. How was she going to complete this challenge? When she was running out of time too? The girl decided to head back downstairs, starting to feel the disappointment set in. Maybe she wasn't smart enough for this. She never was that smart anyway.. Rubbing her forehead tiredly, she took a few steps towards the staircase.. and abruptly paused.

Wait. She had missed the piano, hadn't she? Etta turned around, looking at the piano that seemed to be missing most of its keys. It was highly unlikely that she'd find the missing object there anyway.. right? She absently ran her fingers lightly over the keys, the feeling of dejection growing every second. She'd gone through the entire lower floor and this floor, tearing apart almost everything.. how was she not able to find it? She needed to search again, maybe? Yeah, that was it. But, hang on. Etta frowned as she felt something different brush against her fingers.. something sharp. The girl focused the light on the piano, running her fingers once more through the keys. No, she couldn't feel it this time. A frown had settled between her eyebrows as she stared down at her hand, then the piano, her eyes filled with confusion. She kept brushing her fingers against the keys.. THERE. There, it was again. She bent down, finally noticing that there was a key strapped to the side of one of the piano keys in the middle. She blinked, feeling extremely surprised. It was barely noticeable, really. She carefully removed the key and held it up to see it properly, the corners of her lips lifting up in a small smile. A key hidden among the keys.. how obvious but perfect. Almost ingenious. Now, what though? Carefully dropping it into her pocket, she headed back downstairs and stood somewhere near the door that she'd entered from. Now, what was she supposed to do?

Competitor! You have specific items to find in specific spots! You are not done! The key and the knob suddenly disintegrate in your hand, signaling that you are not done!.

Granted, you are very warm near this piano here. Very warm. Try the keys again. You just might find something interesting. Your thoughts aren’t that far off; you’re heading in the right direction.

A cloud of dust from all of the recent movement fills the space. Some moths swarm upward since you disturbed the fireplace; your quest continues.

SUMMER FOREVER

Etta stared as both the items she thought she'd recovered.. were not in her pocket anymore. They had simply vanished. BLINK. What just happened? Apparently, she could only assume rightly that she hadn’t figured out the riddle that well. She sighed, absently rubbing her forehead, feeling more than a little frustrated. Why was this more difficult than she'd anticipated? She walked over to where she had left the parchment earlier and read the riddle once again, trying to figure out where she'd went wrong. Was she wrong with BOTH her guesses? Or were her locations wrong? Or.. what? But honestly, getting annoyed wasn’t exactly helping her so she took deep breaths, hoping she'd solve this soon and just move on.

Um. She read the first couple of paragraphs again and concentrated on the first item she had to find. It can't build a home a house it does amend.. It can’t build a home but a house it does amend.. a key. It HAS to be a key. Frankly, she'd rather face a dementor again than solve this riddle but, it wasn't helping. She studied the lines carefully. Yeah, a key. So, she wasn't wrong about that but maybe.. she'd missed the important part. A particular score.. try them all.. what did those words mean? Did they actually point to a specific location? A score.. try them all.. as in try the piano keys? Ugh. WHY WAS THIS SO CONFUSING? And then, she moved on to the next item? Um. Across the seas.. attach and reattach.. she kept staring at those words. What was small and beautiful but .. could also attach and reattach? Maybe it wasn't a knob. If not, then what? A pen? But the riddle said it couldn't write so that was out of the question.

She kept looking at the parchment until she was starting to feel quite dizzy. The girl closed her eyes and started to focus. Maybe the stove was the location where it was hidden.. something small and beautiful. It was so generalised, though. It could be almost anything. Or was it the knob? Was it supposed to be found in another location.. She sighed, chewing her lip thoughtfully. Or maybe whatever it was, needed to be found somewhere close to the stove. Her thoughts were starting to wander all over the place. But first.. before making a thorough search once again, she headed back upstairs and stood near the piano. It HAD to be one of the locations.. it was clear from the riddle. But where, exactly?

She kept pressing at the keys randomly which yielded nothing so the girl started to press each key slowly from one side of the piano to the other, hoping she'd hear something different. It had to be in there somewhere since she she had searched all the other places in and around the piano, unless she had missed something. Riddles were definitely not her thing, NOPE. On her third try though, she stopped.. thinking that maybe one of the keys was off.. or was it just her imagination.. her eyes widened slightly. She kept pressing that particular key until she felt sure.. but now, what? There must be something hidden inside. If there was something attached to that particular key, there should be a way to find out.. maybe.. there was a lever somewhere? Was she heading in the right direction?

Time ticks by, and as you try each key, click, click, click each time, and each key makes the exact noise it is supposed to make. Except…..one. One near the end, too. It doesn’t make the musical sound like the others, but rather, a low, muffled chime sound. OFFMMFFFTTT is more the sound, honestly. The key is slightly wiggly, too, but not enough to come off. Trying each key may be time consuming, but it was probably the best choice. Backtracking won’t set you too far behind, Hogwartian, if you are wise in your decisions. So far, so good.

Now what? You’re getting warmer, you know. Quite warm, actually, so don’t lose hope. Perhaps your previous thoughts, too, weren’t all that unintelligent.

Have a little faith.

Come on, now. What next?

SUMMER FOREVER

Etta paused for a moment, realising that she was wasting precious time but she had no choice. Might as well do this properly rather than mess it up in a hurry and end up losing altogether. She, once again, ran her fingers through the keyboard. She pressed every single key.. until she realised that she had been right. That one single key that didn't seem to sound like the rest of them.. the one near the end.. it seemed to make a completely different kind of sound.. like there was something probably underneath it. She pressed it a couple of more times just to make sure before pulling her hand away. The key was a little wiggly too but it wasn't loose enough to actually come off so she had to think. Now, what? Thoughts flooded her mind as she tried to think of her next plan of action. She obviously needed to see what the key was hiding.. but what she'd thought earlier crossed her mind. Was there actually a lever somewhere? Etta wasn't sure how that could be a possibility, though. Where on earth would she even find one? She would end up wasting more time trying to find one, anyway. Giving another frustrated sigh, she sat down on the moth-eaten seat. It had been a long time since she had played the piano last, yeah? Not that the present was the time to reconsider her non existent musical skills.

.. and then finally something crossed her mind. Magic, of course. She could try magic to pry that key open, yeah? That made total sense. It was simple and saved time. The girl shifted her wand to the other hand, trying to figure out what spell would help. She obviously didn't want to damage the piano so she needed to be careful. But.. she did try pulling out the key with her hands first but that didn't seem to work. So.. magic, it was. The girl decided to cast a light reducto, her wand focused on the piano. It would just break the key and enable her to access whatever it was that seemed to be hidden underneath. She wasn't entirely sure if that was the right way to go about it.. or maybe she was wrong AGAIN but there was no harm in giving it a try, anyway.

The anxiety was clearly visible on her face, fidgeting with the ends of her robe. This challenge had already seemed to go on forever. But so far, she'd managed somehow.. potion, the whomping willow, getting injured.. yeah, Etta had survived all of that but the riddle was just throwing her off completely. How was a simple riddle so confusing? Or were her thoughts moving in the right direction at all? And she still had another item to find once this was done.. she couldn't help but feel more nervous than normal. Or maybe she was just getting too worked up without reason. There were just so many doubts going through her mind.. that she was honestly beginning to doubt herself. She knew that was a mistake.. Ugh. Etta casted the spell and watched, heart in her mouth.. her eyes so wide, she probably wasn't even blinking. Oh, had it worked? Or was she going to have to try this over again?

No need to try over, girl. The wiggly piano key indeed sounded odd compared to the rest of them. The hex you sent its way popped the key up and out of its spot; while there was nothing underneath the key, the single ivory piece landed atop the piano’s lid with a tiny clatter!

It was a very specific place for it to land, wasn’t it? What helped make the piano’s sounds, anyways? The keys had to be connected to something...and somehow, pressing the key made the noise. It was a curious occurrence, and something you should not ignore. A soft flutter could be heard from within the piano, too. Now that definitely wasn’t normal. An investigation is clearly in order!

.... and at first, Etta thought her spell had been a complete waste. There didn't seem to be anything underneath it or connected to it in any manner, as she had expected, so.. once again, disappointment was starting to set in. Maybe she was just hopeless at this and should probably give up already although she knew that in her heart, that was the last thing she wanted. Even if she ended up losing, she had to put up a decent fight, yeah? She didn't want to end up embarrassing herself.. If only she could put her brains to use properly. But, her self-doubts were distracting, not letting her focus on what was to be done. Her gaze momentarily flickered to the lid of the piano where the key had landed with a clatter.. her eyes narrowing slightly.

She hadn't searched underneath the lid of the piano, had she? In fact, Etta hadn't even considered the idea. It was such a obvious place to search but.. she had missed it. The girl got to her feet, walking around to the other side of the piano and eyed the lid for a moment, when she heard something. OHGOSH. What was that?! It sounded like a.. flutter. Of wings, perhaps? Was there a bird stuck inside? Stuck within the strings inside, perhaps? Or.. a ghost? Since this shack had been empty for a very long time, who knew what lurked inside? Or her imagination was just running wild as usual. She felt extremely nervous as she continued just looking at the lid for a few a seconds before deciding to just get it done with. She had to find out anyway and there was no point in putting it off any longer. Whatever it was had to be a piece of the puzzle that she had to be solved as soon as possible. She was already wasting precious time. Trying to not let the anxiousness get the better of her, Etta took a deep breath and slowly lifted the lid. It was a little bit heavy but she could manage, her eyes scanning the inside of the piano carefully, ready to drop the lid at any second. You know, just in case something came jumping at her face. What was making that sound?

The fluttering sounds continues; it sounds soft and almost gentle. As you open the lift, something quickly brushes by your face. It feels like a bug - and then a swarm of moths, which somehow had been trapped within this piano, all fly out rapidly, some of them definitely fluttering themselves right into your face. Moths won’t harm you, no, but the suddenness of it might be enough to spook you from looking further. Scared, are we?

But you must look further, for there is something curious poking out from within the hammer and the strings. It looks black, old, and possibly familiar to you. You have met this object once before….long ago, when you first came to Hogwarts. The flap of material flutters almost playfully.

Magic always leaves a trace, doesn’t it?

SUMMER FOREVER

"AHHHH!" Well, Etta had definitely not been expecting moths to fly out of the piano at ALL. OHMYGOSH. She almost let go of the lid in panic but couldn't risk it since it was an old pianol.. and didn't want to end up damaging it. She closed her eyes and kept her mouth firmly closed as she waited for them to go away, in case one of them ended up flying into her mouth or something.. so gross. Really, they were just moths but they were nonetheless disgusting and even after they'd flown away, she could still still feel the tiny wings flapping against her face. She pulled a face and gently closed the lid for a moment, wiping her face with the corner of her robe before sneezing a couple of times. Ugh. Honestly though, she was more than a little curious to read more about this shrieking shack once this was all over. How long had it been abandoned and desolated? Why wasn't anyone using it anymore? It was a part of the school's property, yeah? Why hadn't they taken care of it? Of course, all these questions were very interesting but they were not helping her current situation. After a few seconds, making sure there were no creatures flying around her, she gently lifted the lid again.

At first, she could see nothing.. of course. It was dark and she didn't have lumos on. She propped the lid open this time before pulling out her wand and lit it. She squinted against the light, trying to find out the source of the sound she'd heard before. She moved her gaze right to the end.. and felt her eyes slightly widen. She noticed something poking out of the corner.. so she moved closer to reach for it. It seemed like a piece of material but once she examined it in close range, her eyes widened even more, the surprise clearly registered on her face. She'd seen it when she had first entered Hogwarts, of COURSE. Etta would recognise it anytime, anywhere. It was almost a thousand years old, from the days of the four founders of Hogwarts. What was the sorting hat even doing there? She gazed in wonder, leaning against the edge of the piano.. almost in disbelief.

.. and suddenly, the words made sense. The freaking riddle actually made sense. What she had assumed as a 'house' wasn't literally a house but the four houses of Hogwarts, right? She almost wanted to laugh, her hand covering her mouth.. but quickly realised that it was covered in dust.. and goodness knows what else. She quickly pulled her hand away, her eyes still on the hat. Now, what? Biting her lip, she leaned forward and reached for it with her free hand.. but hesitated. The hat did have a particularly loud mouth.. but giving a small shrug of the shoulders, she gently and very carefully reached for it once again, pulling it out from where it was stuck between the strings and the hammer. It didn't matter, anyway. Raising an eyebrow, she stared at it some more before suddenly realising that she wasn't actually done. She had to hurry to find the other object. But her mind kept going through the riddle, still feeling mildly confused. A lever that unlocks a door, though.. Etta still wasn't sure what that particular line meant. A door.. as in the lid of the piano? She shook her head and started to head towards the staircase. Moving on..

Yes, another object you must seek now, champion. You are doing well, though, so do not give up now! You are so close to being done. Think about what the first item was...a Hogwarts’ item. The Sorting Hat. If you check the lines about the next item, the riddle says,

"Now, our next item is from across the seas.
It can attach and reattach as you please.
It doesn’t write; it surely isn’t a quill,
And it’s small in size as well as beautiful.

Twist clockwise and nothing you’ll get,
But counter that, and you might regret
The noxious gas that fills your space
If you turn it too quickly, wood it would deface."

Across the seas….it can attach and reattach. Take another look at the riddle if you’re feeling lost. The sorting hat is safe and sound in your grasp; one more item to go.

SUMMER FOREVER

Etta headed back downstairs, the next part of the riddle running through her mind constantly. Attach and reattach.. If one was a Hogwarts item, the other must be an Ilvermony object, right? That made sense. She started to think about what she knew and had read about the American school. It accepted students from all over North America, it also had four houses, it was supposed to be one of the greatest magical schools in the entire world.. but not better than Hogwarts, of course. Ahem. But, she quickly brushed away those thoughts. They had nothing to do with what she had to find. She probably had to focus on it's history. What else did she know? The girl stopped at the bottom of the stairs, trying to think more.

Think, Etta. THINK. Their sorting.. She frowned, trying to recollect whatever she knew.. which wasn't much. The students had to step on to a Gordion knot.. WAIT. Th Gordion knot. She stood where she was, the frown deepening between her brows. Of course, she knew all about the Gordion Knot... the history of the gold brooch that Isolt Syre had run away with. The brooch that had belonged to her mother, Rionach Sayre. Thank GOODNESS that she knew something about Ilvermony, at least. All that reading hadn't been a waste. Moving on. She absently rubbed her forehead.. Um. The Gordion knot.. brooch.. didn't the Ilvermony students fasten their robes with that knot? As a symbolic gesture? ... and that was when she abruptly opened her eyes. Hang on.

What did the riddle say again? Small and beautiful, attach and reattach.. across the seas.. did it mean the brooch? Was she supposed to find THE brooch that was supposed to be in the shape of a Gordion knot? That made sense, though. What could be the possible location.. the stove, probably. Oh, how she hoped she was right. She quickly made her way to the small kitchenette, the excitement slowly making it's way to her face. She wasn't a hundred percent sure about the location, of course.. but it was just a hunch. She lit her wand and focused it on the stove for a moment before shifting the bright light towards the knob in the front. Maybe the brooch was tucked in there somewhere.. when suddenly she felt something close to her face. Another moth.. ugh! They seemed to be everywhere, didn't they? Anyway, back to the stove knob.. she paused for a moment before slowly reaching for the nearest one. Maybe Etta just had to turn it clockwise? ... was she right? Or was this another mistake on her part?

follow me; everything is all right.

The knob you choose to play with seems normal. It will turn normally, if you decide to do so. It will turn little flames on if you turn it counterclockwise slowly enough, but nothing will happen if you twist it the other way. It’s a normal working stove knob.

The other knob next to it, though, looks different. It has a sort of sparkly sheen to it, as if the black painted over it is new and doesn’t fully cover its real color. If you choose to twist that one, it is wiggly. And if you twist it hard enough, it will come loose in your hand.

But try all the knobs just to be safe, if you want. But that one is odd, and it’s clearly going to be noticeable to you.
