Default IMPS Challenge #2 :: Aiden Jones

Your teeth may or may not be chattering as you walk along a pathway that is covered in a layer of freshly fallen snow. The pathway soon comes to an end beside a large stone, a subtle warning that treading any further will mean putting oneself at risk. Standing before you, in all of her glory, is the Whomping Willow. Currently the tree remains still, icicles glistening from her branches. But something about them seems a little off...

What is your next move? Dare you take a closer look?

OOC: Post in this thread for your challenge to begin. You will have until June 20th @ 11:59 PM GMT to complete this challenge. Good luck!

What an ugly looking tree. Aiden was no Hogwarts expert but he could only imagine the chills a tree like this could give any student who ventured onto the grounds at night. It reminded him of something straight out of one of those movies he and his siblings used to watch. The only thing missing was the flash of lightning, a bit of rain and the howl of a wolf in the background. Good stuff.

Aiden approached the tree, hands resting loosely in his pockets as he went.

Despite his calm demeanor, he was certain to keep his eyes open and his senses sharp. The forest had had dementors so he expected nothing less from this second challenge. Actually, he was expecting vampires or werewolves. At the bare minimum, he expected to have his life put on the line, presumably for some object that was not actually real.

Time to see what the Professors had in store for them this time. He was anxious and a little excited if he was being honest with himself.

There wasn't any rain or lighting. There was no noise at all, which only added to the true eeriness of the scene before the boy. Nothing like the dead silence of winter. The willow was still, not even the extra weight of what was covered up in icicles. What was hidden in the icicles?

Maybe the boy had taken one step too close toward the willow. Whatever had caused the tree to wake from its slumber, it defintely had angered the willow

The still of the winter’s night was filled with icicles falling here and there and branches rustling about. A branch aimed itself at the boy like a whip, flinging bits of icicle and an entire vial at the boy. Better think fast!

Craccccccccccck!

The vial landed with a CLINK right inside a cauldron that appeared in front of you. A note lay in the cauldron. It read:

"Well, this isn't a hat. Get on with it! Make your way to the passage beneath the tree."

How to get the potions you need from the branches? Workstation? Yep you got just off to the side, safely away from the willows branches for now. Better get to work on that potion.

OOC: It is up to you to decide what ingredients to collect and what potion to brew.

Whoa! Hey! Aiden jumped several steps back when the tree swung into action. Was it just him or did these challenges tend to favour the Hogwart students who would know a lot more about this place? Why had no one bothered to tell him this was a killer tree? Equally important, what had it just flung at him and why was there suddenly a cauldron at his feet.

He looked up to the tree that calmed down once he was no longer in direct range. Motion detecting tree maybe? A closer look revealed other vials...more ingredients maybe? The boy reached into the cauldron and picked up the note laid within. A passage beneath the tree? A passage beneath the killer tree? Whose bright idea was this one? He'd be mashed into mince if he took another step toward that thing.

Unless...

Hmm....

A confounding potion?--No that would only make the tree more dangerous. A calming draught? No. There was no evidence this thing was sentient in the first place. Somehow, he would have to keep away from those swinging branches as much as possible. The only question was how. Then it hit him. Duh. He could be such an idiot sometimes. He would just have to make himself harder to hit.

Aiden squinted at the vials remaining on the tree. He knew just the ones he would need. The Pukwudgie drew his wand and one by one, he summed the vials of daisy roots, shrivelfig, caterpillar, rat spleen, leech juice.

These would provide everything he needed. He made his way to the work station, occasionally glancing up at the tree, just in case.

It was a good thing that the branch had only tossed the hint of what it was hiding in its branches. It stood straight up, proud and tall for a few minutes, giving the boy a false sense of security.

The calm before the storm...

The willow wasn’t backing down from the threat of a trespasser so near. Every branch creaked, shuttered or flailed around as it did when it sensed a presence. The willow began to feel a weight lift as one by one the vials were summoned by the boy.

Daisy roots, shrivelfig, caterpillar, rat spleen, leech juice? What potion could this Pukwudgie be brewing? Here’s hoping that something so small could find the way to the passage. The willow flicked its branches at the boy, taunting him. Daring him to make a move toward him.

Aiden would not be taking that bait today, no thank you killer tree. He would remain at this safe distance to get his brew ready.

Before he began, the boy reached for everything he would need and went through the process of scourgifying all his equipment with the 'S' shaped movement of his wand. He then moved on to preparing the ingredients as he knew he needed them ready before he began the brew. First, he chopped the daisy roots, keeping them as even as he could, then he moved on to slicing the caterpillar before finally taking the shrivelfig and skinning it. Not a piece of the outer peel remained on the shrivelfig when he was done and much like the daisy roots, the boy ensured the caterpillar was also cut very evenly. Precision was important when it came to potions.

That done, he got 500 ml of water into his cauldron--an estimation at most but he would think that by now he would know what 500ml of water would look like in a cauldron. He had brewed enough potions in his life. "Incendio!" He drew the wand movement and watched the flame grow under the cauldron. Once it began to boil, he added the daisy roots, shrivelfig, and caterpillar.

Where was his metal mixer? Ah, right there. He began stirring in a clockwise motion, keeping an eye on his watch to tell him when it would be done. It was a little harder to read in moonlight but not so hard that it couldn't be done.

The rat spleen was added next, followed shortly by the dash of leech juice.

He left it to stew then, constantly checking his watch and occasionally giving the solution a stir. Time seemed to move slowly, the tree over there beckoning him closer without really saying anything. While he waited--with a safe distance kept--the boy circled the tree looking for anything that might hint at a secret passage. Strange enough, there seemed to be something like a knot, just there at the base of the tree. Perhaps that was where he was meant to be headed.

At the end of the half hour, the boy scooped some into a vial, taking just enough to last him a few minutes as he didn't think it would be ideal for him to remain small once he was inside whatever passage there was. That meant he would have to be quick about it. The boy had 10 minutes, 15 tops.

Aiden walked back to where he had made out the strange knot like structure being sure to face it fully before taking that gulp of his potion.

Gauging his potion right, he was now just a little smaller than the size of a domestic cat. He kept his wand out as he made a mad dash toward the knot, all the while keeping his eye out for any of the branches that might suddenly swing down.

The boy was safe that far away. The Willow remained calm and still as long as he wasn’t near. Minutes and seconds ticked by. How much time did he have left?

Hurry.

The potion seemed to have worked, though, and you have gotten lucky, young Pukwudgie. Or should we say, cat. Human the size of a cat, more like, and the hole, which is overly large for you now, is located somewhere near the gnarled roots of the large tree. The limbs swung back and forth, not able to hit the human as easily.

You are lucky.

Now, that hole. It might just lead to what you seek…

Aiden must have seen his entire life flash before his eyes a dozen times while he darted across the ground toward the base of the tree. When you didn't live that long, he supposed the brain just rewinded the memories once it got to the end and let them play again. That image of blueberry pie with Samwell must have flashed through his mind at least three times by now. That was how terrified he was of the suddenly much larger branches that tried to swing at him.

One false move and he was sure he would be dead. That was the disadvantage that came with being this size. Harder to hit but so much easier to kill if the willow got it right even once.

The Pukwudgie breathed a LONG sigh of relief once he found what looked like a hole. A hole. HOW DID ANYONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND GET A HOLE AT THE BASE OF THIS THING?

He could see the appeal, extra security being the biggest but seriously??

Not wanting to ask too many questions, he slipped down into the hole, growing back to his usual size halfway down. Yikes. Looks like he'd gotten there just in time.

Where would this lead?

The Tree continued swing it’s branches, missing the cat sized human. Each swinging motion only grew closer but to no avail. It was really lucky for the boy. Would the boy find the hole before a branch had a chance to strike? Would he ever find the hole? There it was! Best not waste anymore time than you need.

Once the Pukwudgie plunged into the hole, everything was dark. He would eventually grow back to his normal size. Congratulations! You have successfully made it safely underground and away from the willow”s deadly branches. But what lies ahead?

Follow the path, and see where you turn up. The end of the passageway has a door. You’ll end up where you need to be.

Aiden dusted himself off once he had gotten to the end of the hole.

If he was being honest, he was not surprised to find it so dark down here. How often would anyone really try to brave that tree just to get to whatever this might have been? Did the Hogwarts students use this place much? He would have to ask one of them during breakfast because this was nothing shy of strange.

Secret hiding places under killer trees. What would they think of next?

Further and further he walked with nothing but the sound of his own breathing to keep him company. After a bit, he came to a door.

Well. No other way out but there. He was not very interested in trying the tree again. The potions were on the wrong side and he was too young to be viciously mauled by a tree that knew very little about making friends.

Once at the door, Aiden tried it, pushing against it to open it up. This should be interesting.

As you make your way through the cold and dark passage, you head towards the end and the next part of the challenge. The passage is relatively quiet other than the boy's footstep making the trek to whatever was to come next.

Hold on, don’t go through that door yet. Can you see anything? It's black all around you. It could be helpful to see that if you had gone right through the door. Without taking another look you would have ended up clueless to what you needed to do. Attached to the doorknob is everything that you need to know. A rolled piece of parchment says:

*Click Me*

Text Cut: Text Only
Remember: things are not always as they seem,
And with odd trinkets this shack does teem.
In the time remaining, you must find your way
And locate two items that have gone astray;

One is held dear to our pigletted friends.
It can’t build a home, but a house it does amend
To every boy and girl cherished at the castle,
But you won’t find it without much hassle.

You’re looking for a lever that unlocks a door,
But to find the item you might need a particular score.
Try them all, and you will see. Something is off.
Dust covers this place like an infernal cough.

Now, our next item is from across the seas.
It can attach and reattach as you please.
It doesn’t write; it surely isn’t a quill,
And it’s small in size as well as beautiful.

Twist clockwise and nothing you’ll get,
But counter that, and you might regret
The noxious gas that fills your space
If you turn it too quickly, wood it would deface.

Good luck, champions. Find them both here.
Look with your eyes, hear with your ears.
Search up and down, and then high and low,
But don’t be too hasty or too slow.

OOC: Here is a floor plan provided OOC to make it easier to RP your character exploring the shack. Feel free to be as creative as possible.

What the actual what? Aiden had found the parchment just as he was prepared to head inside and found himself even more confused than when he had come face to face with the killer tree outside.

Pigs? Scores? Gas that could destroy wood? So basically, another death trap. Good to know. Somewhere in this place was something he needed and there were probably a million things that might kill him before he found them.

Not wanting to waste too much time, he set out into the room, his gaze set on the parchment riddle. Missing score? Score what? Like a quadpot game? No, a quick glance around revealed nothing sports related, just rotting food and questionable furniture....so....no sports. But then...score? Perhaps a musical score? But there was nothing here that revealed anything musical either.

Quite frustrated, he decided he would try the second half first.

It said something about twisting. Naturally this meant he would have to go around twisting everything that could be twisted. Nothing by the dining table. The fireplace seemed clear as well of anything worth twisting which led him next to the kitchen. There was a moment's paused while he surveyed the room before he headed toward the stove. Not knowing which was the correct way, he twisted all four burners, first clockwise then counterclockwise just in case. Something had to give. If nothing happened, he would search the bathroom. Perhaps the sink could be twisted in both directions.

Do not count yourself short, boy. You are headed in the right direction right away. Very warm, and not just from the stove. The first burner you try seems normal. Little flames lick upward, and you move on to the next one after turning it off. The same happens. And to the third, too. The fourth, though, has a slightly different color to it, as if it were painted or glazed over, and nothing happens when you turn it on. It also isn’t nearly as tightly in the stove as the others.

What could this mean?

Give it another twist, maybe?

But then - flames larger than the other knobs produced suddenly fire upward. Nothing burns, and they quickly calm down, but nonetheless, this is not normal. Did it singe your eyebrows off?! It certainly came close enough!

WHOA WHAT THE HECK???

Aiden jumped several steps back, just as he had done when the killer tree tried sending him to an early grave. It was just as he had thought. Everything in here really was trying to kill him before he could find whatever it was he was supposed to be finding.

Still visibly shaken by the fire show, Aiden took cautious steps closer. Before the flames had made themselves known, he'd picked up something strange about the final burner he'd tried. It was odd....very slack in position compared to the others. That might have explained the flames to be perfectly honest; a faulty burner. To be sure, the boy reached for it again.

He tried turning and toggling it like he had earlier but ended up giving it a pull as he hadn't anticipated it being this easy to dislodge. It was almost like it had piggybacked off his hand to uproot itself from the rest of the stove.

So now he broke the killer stove under the killer tree and in a twist of nothing but pure irony, he was the killer one walking around the place.

He....could probably stick his wand in there, see if he could use it as a substitute for the broken burner switch. Just his luck, break the thing that was probably going to give him answers. Was it too late to check the bathroom sink?

Don’t stick your wand in there! The knob that is dislodged and located in YOUR HAND currently is slowly morphing into something else! Something you would be familiar with, too, and beautiful, certainly. Not a quill, but a pin, and not just any pin, but Isolt Sayre’s brooch rest in the palm of your hand currently.

Is this the first item? Of course it’s the first item! That wasn’t too hard, was it? You should move on; time is running out.

Where to next? Refer to the riddle:

You’re looking for a lever that unlocks a door,
But to find the item you might need a particular score.
Try them all, and you will see. Something is off.
Dust covers this place like an infernal cough.

There certainly isn’t anything down here that would make sense for that part of the riddle, is there?

What in the what? How .....?

Aiden blinked as the knob slowly transformed, realizing only after the fact that he DID know what this was. Huh. Would you look at that. One item down and a whole other part of the riddle to go. He pocketed his prize for now so as not to lose it before turning and heading for the staircase he'd seen when he'd first arrived.

Score. It wasn't a sport but there was no music down here.

Now even more cautious than before, the boy drew his wand while he walked. Nothing else would take him by surprise, he would be sure of it. Higher and higher he climbed until he got to the nex--hellooooooo piano. And here he thought nothing else would make sense to him. Score....like in sheet music..... Was there anything else in here?

Aiden plopped down in the seat, not as bothered by the dirt as he could be. Growing up on a farm did that for you.

Unlocking a door...needing a score.... One of these must open somewhere else up. Properly sure of this, the boy began tapping at each key, playing them all in turn from one end to the other. Surely something would have to give. One of these was the 'score' yeah?

With the brooch in hand, you trek upstairs. Perhaps you intuition about the piano is correct; there are many keys missing from this filthy, dusty piano. A centimeter thick layer of dust seems to coat the entire instrument. When you sit on the stool, clouds of the stuff fluffs into the air. You might be coughing for days at this rate.

Each key is pressed; from the first key until the third to last key, they all sound in tune. The sound is right, and there is nothing off about these ivory keys. But the last two don’t seem to make a noise. Listen closely, though, and you’ll hear that there is is a noise, but it is so muffled and quiet from within that piano lid that surely something is not letting those keys do their musical duty.

So...what does this mean?

When it wasn't killer trees or blazing fires, it was dust....dust that was trying to do him in early. One would think that with there being no more dementors, his life would not be in any great peril but this cloud of dust would beg to differ. It was either paranoia or he was feeling some of it circulating around in his lungs.

But hang on there. Aiden had been going down the line, pressing the keys and listening in. Halfway through, he had gotten so used to the keys making a sound that it completely threw him through a loop when the last two went silent on him.

Strange.

He pressed each key again, noting the faint noise they made. Ugh, all this dust making these keys stuck. He'd never play the right score if they couldn't be played. Sighing at what only seemed to be another stumbling block, the Pukwudgie pried the last two keys off the piano then drew his wand to get the area clean. Surely there was something blocking it and his guess was dust bunnies.

Sneaky little devils always got where they should not have been.

Next he popped the lid up and peered inside, ready to get that area cleaned as well. Someone would need to pay him for this service. Piano cleanings were not cheap.

As you hit the keys, get no sound from just a few. Something must be blocking it. You lift the lid and ... what is that? There before you lies the Hogwarts Sorting Hat. Is the item you are looking for?

While you have found the hat, it, however, remains in the piano. Unfortunately, you have have ran out time and out of luck.

You are startled awake. Where are you now? You’re not in the Shrieking Shack anymore. You sit up to see a white rooms with several empty beds.

What was this a dream or maybe a nightmare?

An employee from the Department of Mysteries greets you when you awake. With a smile, they inform you that you were in a magically modified daydream. You are checked out for injuries and sent to the stands to await the scores.

OOC: You may now look at the viewing area and/or other competitors' threads.
