Default IMPS Challenge #1 :: Mason Winslow

You find yourself standing at the edge of a dark forest with nothing but your wand to aide you. Tall, gnarled trees tower overhead, bunching close together as if to block out the sky. A thick fog covers the forest in an eerie haze that adds to the sense of overwhelming dread. Those who dare venture farther will quickly notice the temperature steadily dropping and darkness increasing with each step.

What dangers lie ahead in this place? Dare you even go inside?

OOC: Post in this thread for your challenge to begin. You will have until May 31st @ 11:59 PM GMT to complete this challenge. Good luck!

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

While he had walked towards the place where the first challenge would be , Mason had felt surprisingly nervous. He had practiced a lot and had consulted his textbooks whenever he could so he had thought that he would be mentally ready. Yet , that was with the IMPS was about , wasn’t it? He had signed up knowing fully well he would be thrown in the deep, dark waters. So with this not so assuring thought, he stepped towards the forest ahead of him.

With his Alder Wood already in his hand, Mason tapped it against the side of his leg as he stared at the thick and tall trees towering overhead. He had to crane his neck to see the treetops. He took a deep breath in , held it for a couple of seconds and breathed back out. His first goal was to make it at least through the first round, he could worry about the other challenges later. Baby steps.

Nodding, and telling himself that he was going to be fine as long as he stayed sharp, Mason entered the forest. The moment he had left the safety at the edge of the forest, the feeling was immediately different. He was alone now and it made him even more nervous. Though not as nervous that he started to fidget. While he walked further, the Ravenclaw started to wonder if the fog he was in right now was all natural and part of the forest or if they had used a smokescreen spell on the location to give it a more creepy vibe. Natural or not, it was doing very well in keeping him alert.

His steps were careful, almost calculated as he held his wand up , ready to use it right away when needed. His dark brown eyes observed as much as he could. Not only did he look forward but also to his left, right and above and over his shoulder in case something was sneaking up on him.

The farther he ventured inside of the forest, the darker and colder it became. He was okay with the cold so far. As someone who had went to Durmstrang for four years, he was more used to the cold than most of the Hogwarts students. But he did not like that his sight was getting more and more limited so the Ravenclaw flicked his wand, making a small loop as he thought ‘Lumos’ and the tip of the wand illuminated. By doing this, he was sure he would attract attention but he felt better knowing he would be attacked soon and he could see it coming than knowing he would be attacked soon and he could not see it coming. The difference was big if he had to say so himself.

You're being careful. That's good, but you can't play it safe forever.

Your Lumos spell lights the way ahead, but no danger jumps out at you yet. Don't get too comfortable though.

"AAAAAAAARRRGH!"

A chilling scream rings out loud and clear. It's coming from deep in the forest. This noise requires further investigation...

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

If they took away the darkness, the eerie fog and the dreadful sensation that something bad was going to happen, this place might actually be a lovely spot to sit against one of the trees and read a good book. Mason smiled at the thought despite feeling more nervous with each step. He continued to observe his surroundings, his brain taking in as much detail as he could in case he saw any sign of what was to come. He hadn’t bothered marking his way yet as he had walked in a straight line so far.

While the tip of the wand illuminated his way but it was still not ideal to see. He could use a more powerful spell to light his way but attracting more attention was not what he wanted right now. Nothing attacked him yet and on one hand he had thought it would be like this. Building up suspense for the viewers and increasing anxiety for him. It was all a big mind battle when nothing jumped out at him and Mason might not be the best fighter but he had a strong mind that could battle the negative thoughts on what was going to happen. Unless you were talking to him about N.E.W.T exams... THEN he freaked.

A sudden loud scream tore him away from his thoughts and the Ravenclaw actually jumped because he got startled. His heart went racing and it was pounding so loudly in his chest he was sure anyone could hear it. Gripping his wand tightly in fear of dropping it, Mason had spun towards the direction the scream had been, ready to defend himself but nothing happened. He hadn’t even noticed how clammy his hands were until now or that they were even shaking a bit.

He took a calming breath again when he was sure that he wasn’t getting attacked and waited for a moment to think. Should he go and investigate? His mind was thinking about all the possible creatures that could be in this forest. At first, he had thought he had to battle a dementor when he had entered and had felt the dreading sensation and the cold. Then he had thought about a Hinkypunk that could lure him in the fog but as far as he knew, Hinkypunks used a light to lure unexpected travelers and he couldn’t remember reading anywhere that they could scream. Though they said that Hinkypunks were more concidered spirits than actual creatures....

On one hand he wanted to be the smart one and NOT go to investigate because he was SURE it would be a trap however, if he started to walk the other way he would basically be saying ‘i give up’ and Mason Winslow did not give up! He walked swiftly towards the nearest tree in the direction that the sound had been and after a careful look around the seventh year slashed his wand and drew an X on the tree bark with a non-verbal ‘Flagrate’ spell.

Mumbling an apology to his parents who he knew were at Hogwarts and watching from the viewing area right now, he mustered up the courage and walked in the direction of the sound.

Good boy! You made the right choice in going to investigate the scream!

The Flagrate spell you cast on the tree was a clever idea, but it'll only help you find our way back if you avoid getting attacked long enough to pass this way again.

The screams get louder as you follow the sound deeper into the forest, and soon you find yourself face to face with an old man. He's pale and shaking and mumbles incoherently.

Suddenly the fog thickens, and the temperature drops further, adding to the feeling of dread and despair. A slimy, decayed hand reaches out of the darkness toward the man. What does this creature want with him?

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

The use of the flagrate spell was exactly for running back when things got too difficult. Sorry not sorry but he did not trust the security at Hogwarts to be quick enough to help him and he needed an escape route the moment he had to flee. He was a Ravenclaw and therefore not foolish enough like those Gryffindors to risk his life for a possibility he’d get a scholarship. Not worth it.

At the thought of the Gryffindors, he vaguely wondered how Dora was doing with her challenge. Shaking his head, Mason frowned. Why was he thinking about the other competitors? He should be focusing on himself.

Wand still raised, Mason followed the sound of the scream, walking deeper into the forest. He occassionally had to stop and listen in which direction the scream was coming from and whenever he changed direction he marked a nearby tree with a glowing red X. If he wasn’t able to defend himself he’d know his way back.

A figure in the distant, just illuminated by his wand light caused him to stop in his track and the Ravenclaw watched him with curiousity in his eyes. The man was shaking, mumbling words he could not understand. What was going on? Was he a creature? Was he supposed to battle an old man? Or was he a victim he had to safe? But from what? So many questions ran through his mind and the feeling of dread increased.

………………Should he poke him with a stick and see if he was alright?!

But he soon noticed that these feelings of dread and despair wasn’t because he was unsure of what to do. It quickly became evident that it was the source of something much worse and it was messing with his mind. As he watched the man carefully, the fog suddenly thickened and the seventh year shivered when the temperature dropped even more.

Unsure if it would work or not because the Charm could be used to repel mist and fog wasn’t technically the same as mist eventhough they were both made of moisture or water vapour, Mason waved his wand and muttered “Impervius”. Hoping his vision would be better because his light was reflecting on the fog now and it was distracting.

The moment he did so, he suddenly saw a slimy and decayed hand reached from behind the old man and his thoughts of the old man being a creature in disguise vanished immediately. His first thought was to get the man away from danger but he didn’t want to put him in harms way by shooting spells. What if he missed the target and hit the old man by accident?

Not to mention that he wasn’t even sure what the reaching hand was. Although, adding up his feelings of despair and worries, he was sure it was a dementor and if that was true, he had to get them both out as soon as possible. He couldn’t do a corporeal patronus eventhough he had practised and had only managed a thin wisp of silver to hover in front of him like a shield. And what if the hand wasn’t a dementor like he was thinking?

in a matter of a second, Mason made up his mind and aimed his Alder wood wand not at the reaching hand but at the old man. Doing a whip like wand motion, Mason said the “Carpe Retractum” spell and a magical golden/orange colored rope shot towards the man in order to pull him away from the hand and he tucked his wand sharply towards himself. He then quickly waving his wand again and used the "Arresto Momentum" spell to slow down the velocity as he did not want to get knocked over himself. How embarrassing would that be!?

Very clever idea using Impervius on the fog! Too bad it has absolutely no effect. The fog remains just as thick as ever.

Your Carpe retractum spell successfully wraps around the old man and pulls him to you, but your other spell misses the mark. He comes flying back at full speed and slams into you with a CRASH!

Well, you've managed to get the old man out of harm's way, but you've got bigger problems now! The cloaked figure swoops down at both of you before turning its attention back to the old man. It reveals its monstrous face as it looms over him. It's hungry...

WHY was the man not slowing down?! And why did plans never work out?!

His plan had been getting the old man out of reach of the creature, using a featherlight charm on him, hoist him over his shoulders and RUN. He hadn't marked the trees with X's for nothing. It was his escape route as the seventh year sincerely thought that the first task was not battling a creature, it was a rescue mission. Taking the old man to safety.

Dark brown eyes widen in shock as Mason saw the old man rushed towards him and the Ravenclaw braced himself for the collision. But despite having some muscles, there was no way he could stop it and as the man hit his chest, he was swept off his feet and fell backwards.

Mason tumbled over the ground twice before coming to a stop and gasped for air as he had gotten the wind knocked out of him. He shifted his body to see what was happening and he winced when he realised he had scraped his elbow. Ignoring his injury because there were more important things happening, the Ravenclaw turned his head and tried to find the old man in the fog.

Finding him nearby, Mason suddenly felt a feeling of utter disgust. Were they actually using a person for this type of task as bait? Or was he an illusion? No matter what he was, Mason was going to treat him as a real life half alive person and get him out of the forest.

His arms shaking with the effort to push himself off of the ground and get to the old man, his clothes was covered in dirt and leaves and small twigs were tangled in his hair. As he stumbled towards the old man, Mason's head began to spin with terrible thoughts. He had never experienced a trauma before so that was not what he was re-living in his mind but negative thoughts he had about himself but did not show the world. He thought about not being good enough, about his parents and how they must think he was a failure if he did not succeed. What did it matter though? Maybe he should just give up and let the dementor take the man's soul and get it over with.....

'NO' a voice said far away in the back of his mind but Mason heard it and he muttered the word out loud as well. Although it was a whisper, that small resistence gave him strength enough to lift up his wand and aimed it at the Dementor.

He had to find a happy memory, a time or place he had felt truly happy but the closer the cloaked figure came , the harder it was to find something happy. Great, all this trouble and he would lose. What if he gotten his soul sucked out? Could he still read books after that? Would he still be able to understand the stories when someone read him a book? If he lost now, he would NEVER find out what the ending of the book he was currently reading was and the thought frustrated him more than the old man getting his soul sucked out soon. Oops?

But....wait...books! That was it!

He had read that In order to cast a patronus shield one did not need a pure happy thought. It could be an obsession as well and books were his obsession. He was known for always carrying at least two with him, came to class early to get some reading done before class would start. He collected them and had about seven bookcases full at home. He was even doing everything in his power not to steal the Book of Merlin from the Headmistress because he wanted it for his collection. If they had the money, he traveled with his parents to other countries for vacations and even though he could not read the languages of the books he buyed, he still wanted to own them because how COOL was it to have books in all the languages of countries he had traveled to.

Books made him happy, truly happy. They were his safe place, objects he could turn to when he felt sad or happy. He'd spend hours reading a day whether it was for studying and building up knowledge or a simple novel to relax and enjoy the millions of worlds coming to life with each page. It might be silly for some but he was passionate about his obsession.

With this happy obsession in his mind, his eyes seemed to spark with determination as he moved his wand in a circle from left to right and shouted "Expecto Patronum!" he wasn't expecting a corporeal patronus but aimed to make a silver shield between the old man, himself and the dementor.

Looks like somebody's done his homework about patronuses! The spell you cast creates a shapeless silver shield between you and the creature. YOur incorporeal patronus is strong enough to halt the dementor but doesn't drive it away completely.

The dementor is stopped for now, but the old man still needs your help. He stares straight ahead with a blank expression, still babbling. He also begins to shiver violently. You'd better do something to help him and quick!

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

Mason focused on his obsession with all his thought and watched, fascinated as a silver shapeless shield was casted between the dementor and himself. Of course, he had secretly hoped there would be a corporeal patronus because he was very curious to know what shape it would take but he was pleased with what he had managed for now.

The dementor wasn't gone yet but the shield only halted the creature from coming closer but it was better than them both having their souls sucked out. He still had so many things to do in life! And even if they say that you won't die from it, the effects of what happens to someone who lost their soul was more terrifying to him.

Looking towards the old man, who was staring straight ahead and still babbling, Mason suddenly wondered that if he wasn't an illusion, perhaps he was a muggle? Or maybe a prisoner who was getting The Kiss anyways when this challenge ended? The Ravenclaw suddenly looked at the man as if he was judging him and he was. What if he was helping a criminal right now? Had he killed someone?

No, no those were foolish thoughts. The tasks were dangerous, he knew that, but he doubted they would use an actual criminal and if they did well...that was new, wasn't it? First they needed to get away thought, he could find out what and or who the old man was later.

But before he could talk to the old man, Mason saw that he began to shiver violently. Why was he shivering?! Was it the cold? The dementor exposure? The seventeen year old knew that here was no such thing as a calming spell either, he knew of a potion but he did not carry potions with him. If he survived this challenge and managed to get to the second task by some miracle he was going to take his bag with him and store in some supplies. Or was that not allowed?

Or a cheering charm? With his state of mind right now, Mason wondered what the effects would do on the old man. It was probably going to make him a nutcase so that was out of the question. Chocolate was one of the temporary cures as well but who even thought about taking chocolate with them during a task?! That was ridiculous and Mason didn't have any sugar with him either. Nor could he make chocolate himself thanks to Gamp's Law of Elemental Transfiguration.

The thought that he could summon some chocolate did come to mind. If Harry Potter could summon a broomstick, something he had find out when he had done some research on all kinds of tournaments like this one , he could summon chocolate. He visualised a piece of chocolate , flying through the air towards him and actually began to laugh despite the seriousness of the situation. It didn't hurt to try righ? And if it didn't work he always had plan B. And if THAT didn't work, he'd had to go with plan C and the old man was NOT going to like plan C.

Concentrating with all his might, Mason thought of the box of chocolate frogs in his trunk in the dormitory. He visualised the shape, the color even the taste of it before he swished his wand in the air and non-verbally summoned two of them.

If this worked he was going to laugh for days.

Not relying on the chocolate entirely, Mason looked quickly at the Dementor, shivered and then put the old man's arm over his shoulder to support him. The shivering made it difficult but what else was he supposed to do?!

Plan C of course...but....please don't make him do plan c.

"Sir! Sir calm down i'm here to...." here to what exactly? Mason didn't finish his sentence because he had the feeling that the old man wasn't even aware that he was there. They needed to get away from the dementor and out of the forest and quick. He was positive that the effects of the dementor exposure would fade away eventually when they were taken to the hospital wing.

Still supporting the old man, Mason searched around and saw the fiery red X in the distance and began to move towards it, trying to get away from the creature.

The old man screams the moment you touch him. He tries to pull away, but you eventually manage to support him.

He's still mumbling to himself, but if you listen closely, you'll be able to make out a few phrases. "C-cold... so cold... cold and dark..." he says. "Boy... boy with light... where'd that light come from, boy?"

What does he mean? Are you the boy with the light he's talking about?

Suddenly, a box of chocolate frogs comes flying toward you. Looks like your summoning charm worked after all! Maybe the old mad will start making more sense after he's had a bite?

He could not help it, the Ravenclaw jumped in shock when the man suddenly screamed when he had a hold of him and he had nearly let him fall down. Luckily, his grip was tight so he managed to keep him upright.

His heart racing again and not just from the dementor exposure, Mason didn't stop walking towards the fiery X in the distance while supporting the man. Because his own ear was next to him, he did hear him muttering and at first he thought that he was still mumbling random things until he listened closely and he realised that he was trying to say something.

Boy with light?

"Do you mean my incorporeal patronus, Sir?" he asked , not stopping to make small talk because this was not the time. He actually wanted the man to stay quiet because he had to focus on his way back and keep his ears open for any other attack because the dementor wasn't entirely gone, he knew that.

"It drove away the Dementor but it isn't gone"
he still felt miserable and negative thoughts kept going through his head but he tried to keep all of his focus on getting out. "So we need to hurry up and get back as soon as poss---what the?"

Mason watched as a box of chocolate frogs suddenly flew towards him and he caught it in the air. Opening it up, he saw that some of the frogs were gone and he wondered if they had fallen out during the flight OR IF ROONEY HAD EATEN SOME?!

Wasting no time, he unwrapped one of the frogs and gave it to the man before pocketing the card in his jacket cause nothing could stop him from collecting these things. Not even soul sucking monsters. "Eat, it's chocolate, it will make you feel better" he said as he took a bite himself.

Supporting the old man again, Mason pointed at the fiery red X in the foggy distance. "You see that , Sir. That's our escape route, if we follow those X's we get back to where i started and get out of the forest so don't give up hope yet, okay?" he said these words more to motivated himself than the old man but he wasn't going to mention that of course. "What's your name?"

The old man mumbles something about flying boxes as the chocolate you summoned appears. He looks at you in confusion but takes the chocolate frog you give him. As he nibbles it, he starts to appear a little more coherent.

"I don't understand a word you just said, boy!" he says. "I didn't see a demon- demented- thing! All I know is I was just going for a walk, and it got dark and cold all of a sudden. And what's a patri- patty- pat-? You know what I mean!"

He breaks free of your grip and refuses to budge. "I want some answers, and I'll not go another step until I get them!"

So what are you going to tell him?

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

So far so good. The Dementor didn't seem to be attacking and Mason found his way back with the help of the red X's carved in the trees with ease. It was almost too easy.

Suspiciously looking around while supporting the old man with one arm, the other still had his wand in his hand, Mason didn't wait for him to finish eating the chocolate. They could recover and walk at the same time in his opinion. The lingering fog made it difficult to see and he sometimes had to stop and look around until he found another fiery red X and tried to walk towards it when the old man suddenly broke free of his grip. Mason stared at him, openmouthed as he began to realise that this man wasn't a criminal, an illusion or a wizard. He was a muggle. If the man looked confused, Mason was even MORE confused. What was a muggle doing here? Was he really a muggle or did he just pretend to be one?

"You...you didn't see that...creature?" he asked though he already knew the answer. Muggles could not see Dementors but they can feel their presence. Rubbing the back of his neck, unsure of what to do, Mason looked around, trying to locate the Dementor. He had used magic in the presence of a muggle. Was he going to be expelled from school now? Was the whole idea of this task to rescue someone WITHOUT the use of magic?! A ridiculous thought because , well first it was a magical competition. How boring would it be without magic? And two , the man had been in danger of getting his soul sucked out. Yes, he definitely had to use magic. But what was he supposed to tell him now? The chocolate seemed to be effective and Mason secretly wished the man could go back to shivering and mumbling while he dragged him out of the forest.

This was so much worse. He wasn't raised to lie. Of course, the occasional white lie was something else but this was big. Mason ran a hand through his hair and let out a breath of frustration. "Okay" he said finally after a couple of seconds thinking. "I'll explain but please don't interupt me until i'm finished talking , Sir" he implored. "You were attacked by a Dementor. They are dark and foul creatures who consume the souls of the living. The darkness and cold you felt, it was because the Dementor was sucking all the happiness out of you. They basically life of happiness and joy until the one they are feeding off only has their darkest and most terrifying memories left. When none of the happiness is left the Dementor will suck out your soul, you won't die but you'll just be empty, nothing." he stopped for a second to let the words sink in before he continued.

"The reason why you couldn't see the creature is because it is invisible to you but i'm different so i can see them" he sighed out loud. Not knowing if he should tell more or not. "Look" he said urgently. "I'm just a kid, i know" actually he was almost an adult but old people saw anyone of school age as a kid... "And whether you believe me or not is up to you, i can't force you but i can give you advice and i hope you'll listen to it" he looked around again, still raising his wand in case the Dementor came back.

"If you come with me, i'll get you out of this dark forest. Once we're out you'll have your memory wiped clean of everything that has happened here. You wil not be able to remember me, what you saw or felt. You will be safe though and back with your family at home as if nothing has happened. If you decide to be stubborn and stay, you'll be consumed by the darkness and depression you felt earlier. You WILL go mad and eventually get your soul sucked out." He said all of this hurriedly because he personally wanted to get out of here.

"I'll explain more but we NEED to continue walking, please!" or else he was going with plan C because he was NOT leaving him here whether or not he decided to be foolish and stay.

follow me; everything is all right.

The man shakes his head in answer to your question. "No, can't say that I did," he says. He starts to say something else but is silenced when you start talking.

He nods as a promise not to interrupt. As you explain the concept if dementors, the suspicion on his face is replaced with shock and confusion. He shudders a little when you mention going mad. It looks like you're getting through to him!

"Well, I'll be!" he says after you've finished talking. "I'm not sure if I believe a word you've just said, but you're right about one thing. I'm not getting anywhere on my own, and I can't stay here." He looks around fearfully.

"Such a dark and evil place!" he says with a shiver. "It makes me feel like I'll never be happy again! I just want to forget this insanity ever happened!"

Can you grant his wish and help him forget?

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

Pleased that the old man did not interrupt him while he explained the concept of the Dementors, Mason finished explaining and he waited for the typical shock and disbelieve. For a moment, he thought that the would believe him in an instant and Mason would have called him a fool if he had. Not out loud though but in his mind. A teenager coming up to you and saying you're in danger of your soul getting sucked out? HA! That was hilarious , even he would question his own sanity if he had been a muggle.

So this was why Mason smiled, the corners of his mouth curling up a bit because the man not 100% believing him meant that he was starting to become sane and thought rationally. He did not push his believe though because it did not matter if he was believed or not, he would lose the memory of this event eventually.

Looking around at the tall trees as well, Mason searched for another fiery red X in the distance and saw one near their left. Turning back to face the man, Mason nodded his head. Wisest decision he had made , following him.

"Let's make a deal, Sir" he said suddenly. "You'll come with me and we both can get out of this forest and once we're out i'll make sure you get back home without any knowledge of the bad stuff that has happened. You'll believe you had the most relaxing and peaceful walk through this forest. It's a win for the both of us so, deal?"

He had never done the memory charm himself and he wasn't entirely fond of it. And in fear of messing it up and be the cause of this man's brain damage was not something he wanted on his conciousness. Besides, the old man was still affected by the Dementor and Mason knew that the moment they were far away from it, they would both feel better. He needed professional help and did not care if this would cost him points. He understood that sometimes, it was necessary for someone to have their bad memory gone in order to move on. And clearly this man wanted to forget. Who was he to deny his happiness? He could be cold and calculating but that did not mean he had no heart. He simply wasn't the right person to do this.

The old man is quiet for a few minutes as he considers your offer. Finally he nods."Okay, we have a deal," he says. "I just want to forget this living nightmare NOW!"

He looks fearfully around the dark forest and begins to shudder. He mumbles a little, but this time you can make out his words. "Make the bad memories stop..." It's probably best that he forgets this experience sooner rather than later.

Maybe you don't want to use a memory charm, but surely there must be something else you could do to end the poor man's nightmare.

Before you can react, a woman removes the disillusionment charm she had previously placed on herself and appears beside you. She's been following you all along to make sure you were safe. The badge she wears identifies her as a Ministry of Magic official. She shakes her head. "I'm afraid your time is up, Mr. Winslow," she says.

Oh, no! You were so close!

With a wave of her wand, the old man goes stiff. A dummy wearing the exact clothes as your victim levitates toward the official as she points her wand at it. Your victim was a dummy all along!

The Minsitry woman hands you an empty soda can and says, "This portkey will transport you to the stands." As soon as you grab hold of it, you're whisked away.
