Default IMPS Challenge #1 :: Dora Umbridge

You find yourself standing at the edge of a dark forest with nothing but your wand to aide you. Tall, gnarled trees tower overhead, bunching close together as if to block out the sky. A thick fog covers the forest in an eerie haze that adds to the sense of overwhelming dread. Those who dare venture farther will quickly notice the temperature steadily dropping and darkness increasing with each step.

What dangers lie ahead in this place? Dare you even go inside?

OOC: Post in this thread for your challenge to begin. You will have until May 31st @ 11:59 PM GMT to complete this challenge. Good luck!

The Gryffindor had downed a wit sharpening potion before exiting the castle... seeing as she had no idea the nature of any of the challenges, she figured better safe than sorry. Not to mention she cast a warming spell on herself to boot. The nip in the air. after all, only seemed to increase as she moved closer to the dark forest. Dora watched every thing around as she made her way slowly, but surely, to the edge of the treeline, pausing occasionally to see if any sound followed her. With the fog creeping in she raised her wand and ALMOST cast Lumos Maxima... but she quickly remembered that fog reflected light. Hmmm. Thinking on her feet, so to speak, she first cast a charmed breeze to see if the fog would dissipate some.

Knowing not to wait for the effects, she quickly cast the supersensory charm on herself. In the event that said fog did indeed stay put, she would at least have heightened senses before picking her way across the bramble and further into the forest. So as she took the time for her eyes to adjust to the darkness, she took one step further in and paused...

The decreasing temperature and all around eerie feeling made her mind immediately go to one thing... but surely not. Well... it might not be the best spell for what she wanted to know, but the blonde girl took a step further in, taking her time to be sure that her footing was sound, and she raised her wand to cast a stealth sensoring spell. The incantations were all muttered aside from the supersensory spell, that which she cast nonverbally. Her nerves were helping her stay vigilant as she picked her path carefully and at a very reasonable and slow pace.

Now... all she could do was wait to see what was to come.

follow me; everything is all right.

The warming spell helps you to relax as you move closer to the forest. Or would the cold have kept you on your toes? The fog around you lingers, it somewhat dissipates after the charmed breeze you cast, but as you venture deeper inside the forest; the fog thickens again.

Your senses are indeed heightened after the supersensory charm, you notice every dark figure and pick up on every sound… Except, no sound at all is heard. The silence is eerie as your stealth sensoring spell gives no results.

Are you really alone?

Then you hear it. A loud scream that penetrates the silence. A supersensory charm is not needed to hear that. You barely have time to collect yourself before another scream is heard, coming from deep within the forest.

There is someone, somewhere, in need of help!

You are the exact right person to help them… Aren’t you?

The warmth didn't deter her focus at all, actually... it , at most, made her feel less than COLD TO TH E CORE. It wasn't a total body warmth... like comfort more than it was a necessity to the Gryffindor. Yep. And as she ventured further into the forest the fog didn't deter her, bro. Not even a little bit. She actually cast a hot air charm toward the fog as it came back toward her... maybe warm air would dissipate it better? Also an insulation charm would keep the warmth up? But apparently her movement into the trees was more important?

The blonde took one step at a time... slowly picking her way across the bramble and low lying plants. Every shadow was probably meant to strike the girl as a Dark figure? But if there was no SOUND the girl kept moving further in. Slowly but surely. BUT... her heightened senses hearing no sound brought her up short! That made no...

A SCREAM PIERCED THE AIR!!

Every ounce of Gryffindor In her body wanted to dash forward to find the person screaming, but her better judgment won. She stayed planted to her spot as she shifted more toward the noise. The champion cast a nonverbal disillusionment charm on herself before moving further still into the trees... and more toward the screaming voice!

While she wanted to be better for the person in need... she also had to figure her own safety into the matter .

What next?

Your continuous effort to clear the fog succeeds and you can finally see ahead as the fog dissipates. As you move in closer towards the sound of the desperate screams, an unsettling feeling fills you; one of hopelessness and despair…

Two figures suddenly appear ahead, a man lying on the ground and a cloaked, hooded figure hovering above him. The smell of decay reaches you as you see the man unable to move away from the hooded figure. The warming charm you cast earlier is keeping you warm but you can't help but notice the surroundings suddenly frozen and lifeless.

The cloaked figure reaches out a scabbed, rotting hand towards the man.

It almost looks like it's… Is it… Feasting on the man?

Dora blinked as the fog finally cleared in front of her... but she wasn't all too pleased with the scene that unfolded before her as she moved forward. The feeling of despair definitely began to fill her up as she paused to cast Henshu on her hiking boots. Since the terrain was beginning to freeze over and all.

She had practiced her next spell at great length and even helped her Head Girl with it as well. So yes, she had been unknowingly preparing for this moment for the past two years. Raising her wand and allowing a moment to let her memory fill her up... the memory was a lovely one of her mother and she in Bali before she had passed. One of her favorite price times of her life. And for once the girl didn't close her eyes as she cast it. She didn't need to. She was finally prepared!

"Expecto Patronum! " she called out clearly and forcefully as she stepped around the final tree into the clearing. NOT TODAY, DEMENTOR! NOT TODAY!

The girl could only hope that the man was alright! She wanted to rush forward and help, but first she had to be sure that the marble fox patronus did its job!

The man on the ground turns his head to you, desperate eyes seek yours. "No..." He whimpers.

The hooded figure takes no notice of you, until you step out from behind the trees and your patronus is cast. It turns away from the man to focus on you instead. Your fox charges forward against the creature. For a second, the creature stands it ground, obviously not willing to leave you or its prey behind...

But your patronus is strong and the creature finally falls back into the shadows between the trees.

The man, eyes wide with shock and terror desperately tries to crawl away from you.

"Why are you doing this?!" He pleaded, not leaving your gaze with his. "Please..."

Wait a minute... Is the man accusing you?

Dora swallowed as the man met her eyes and spoke the first time, but it had not wavered her resolve in casting her patronus. That much was clear when the Dementor fled and after a few long moments, her patronus dissipated. She was still well aware of what was going on around her. The supersensory charm was still working its magic, if you will. The girl listened closely for any sounds as she stepped closer to the man on the ground. Not to mention that her eyes swept the surrounding area at regular intervals.

Having Sabel as her tutor and Uncle was definitely a plus in this particular situation.

The girl gripped her wand tighter as she moved slowly, once again, toward the man. His next words though, she had not been expecting. Not that it made her stop her slow, forward movements, but she did soften her features and move with less zeal. Surely the maN was not... speaking to her? She had done nothing but save him... but she did cast glances behind her in regular intervals as she moved.

Was there someone else there?

"Are you hurt? " she asked as she stepped slowly toward him, which didn't put her much closer seeing as he scampered backward as he did. Curious. "Do you know who I am? Or how you came to be here? " she asked as she moved to a crouch, but still not trying to be imposing. Her senses were on high alert for any trace of movement or sound as she advanced. "I'm not here to harm you, only help. But you have to tell me if you're hurt. "

There was no point in ruching at the man or overwhelming him in this matter. It would surely do more harm than good in this situation. "Do you... do you know where the creature came from? " Almost involuntarily she cast a glance behind her once more, but kept her wand trained in front of herself. Her grip tight and sure.

In the back of her mind she thought of the men who meant so much to her in her life... Spike, Sabel, her dad, Kapoor. What if this was one of them here before her?! She'd be distraught beyond comprehension, surely?

Or everything they had ever taught her would come into play? Was this all a test of her will? If so, they would surely learn that it was iron clad. For all of the ways she was a textbook Gryffindor and bled it from her soul... she had had some pretty amazing teachers preparing her for times like this. All in theory, sure, but the blonde had paid attention nonetheless.

And she had crept closer still to the unknown man before her, hoping to convey with her eyes and body language that she meant him no harm. Quite the contrary actually...

And without another word she raised her wand and shot off SEVERAL more Patronuses in random directions. Just in case. And then followed it with a wand to rhe sky as she muttered, "Protego Maxima, Protego Horrilibis! " Not knowing what was next was not going to keep hER from keeping this man safe. She'd throw herself in front of whatever came if need be. But she was confident in her defense against the dark arts training to think it would not come to that.

But who knew.

Yes, your patronus was indeed strong enough to force the creature back into the darkness. Although confused by the man's actions, a feeling of confidence and happiness grows within you; a result of your conjured patronus.

"What... Happened?" The man mumbles as you move towards him. A look of fear, covered by confusion.

Maybe your questions overwhelm him, maybe the attack and the terror is still too strong. Whatever it is, he doesn't answer your questions. Not all of them, at least...

"It's YOU." He cries out. "You're the one making the creatures. They're coming from you." The man raises his arm towards you and points a shaky finger at your wand. "How do you do that? What are you?"

The patronus might have fought off the creature but the man is still in a state of panic. Sending off more patronuses didn't seem to calm him in the slightest.

He still needs your help, but what else can you do?!

Dora was, before anything else, ensuring her SAFETY before trying to help the maN there. Why would she EVER risk her safety and the unknown man's that way? The patronuses and protection spells were set before she calmed herself and slowed her CROUCHED approach toward him. "You were attacked. I'm here to help... " she said to him.

Him.

When he spoke... Dora legitimately thought her head might explode. A MUGGLE. A BLOODY MUGGLE?! Dora felt her face turn red. The heat gave her away, surely?! THIS WAS MORALLY REPREHENSIBLE!!! Hogwarts set a dementor on a MUGGLE?!

The girl gripped her wand tighter as she cast behind herself to summon chocolate and a calming draught from her dorm. It crossed her mind to do so from Casper or Sam in the stands but it might be weird to have their bags ripped from their hands. Also, she knew for SURE she had those things in her dorm. And exactly where they were located. Surely that was a SURE thing. Right? But as soon as she muttered the incantation she held the wand down beside her leg and frowned at the man.

"Sir. I think you hit your head. I'm here to help you, " she said in a tight voice.

Truth be told? She was a moment away from casting periculum and ending her time in the challenge!

MUGGLES AND DEMENTORS?! Horrible!

She tried to convince herself that it was all an illusion though. Surely no none would be dumb enough to endanger students and break the statute of secrecy for a stupid plaque and a scholarship. SURELY.

But the Gryffindor was WELL ANGRY THO!

Your summoning spell causes chocolate and a calming draught to appear from your dorm. Clever. Only... How to convince the man this will actually help him?

As of right now, he keeps moving away from you, crouched or not. "Hit my head...? I know what I saw. And I know... What I felt..." His eyes suddenly shiny as his gaze flickers away from you.

Yes, the man is affected by the attack of the dementor. An attack one might never forget. "... And then those white creatures. Your white creatures." He whimpers again and hides his face in his hands.

Well, this is getting you nowhere. Better find a way to complete your plan with the chocolate and the calming draught.

Who knows how long your protecting spells will stay in place...

Dora could hardly contain her rage as the man spoke again. Not rage toward him. Toward this entire situation. Pocketing the things she had just summoned she stood up slowly and frowned.

Should she just quit now?

This was infuriating.

But no. She couldn't just quit. She was a GRYFFINDOR and furthermore, she was an Umbridge. And she had not been raised to be a QUITTER. Ugh. Sometimes she wished she had been, really.

But there were far more important things at hand.

Like an affected Muggle man. "Sir, you hit your head. What creatures are you talking about? The white creatures? Are you sure you're okay?" And then he lowered his head and covered his face... this was the moment she had been waiting for. Quickly the girl raised her wand and cast a False Memory charm on him. Adding that he did indeed fall and smack his head. So only adding to his memories in a manner in which she hoped explained everything that he had seen?

She wasn't proud of herself.

Not in the slightest. Any type of memory charm used on what she assumed was a Muggle was morally reprehensible. Fully. But she only hoped that the man calmed a bit so she could convince him to drink the draught and eat the chocolate. Maybe. HOPEFULLY.

"Sir. Are you alright?" she asked softly as she moved closer to him once more.

"Am I alright?" The man watches you with narrowed eyes. "Of course I'm not alright! I'm leaving. Do not follow me. You or those... White creatures."

Uh-oh... Looks like your memory charm has failed you. It's not an easy charm to perfect, you might want to try it again before...

"I also have a stick. See?" The man grabs one from the ground, stands up and backs away slowly from you. "You're not the only one who can make those white creatures appear. I'll send mine after you."

Oh dear. Better try that memory charm one more time before the man leaves the clearing and is reunited with the dementor again.

Focus now.

Dora knew the charm wasn't her strongest, but she hadn't expected it not to work... even a little bit. And now the man had a STICK. Great. Just great.

Her face was set in hard lines as she quickly cast the false memory charm again. It wasn't the same as taking memories from someone, but it was still making her feel icky about this. Ugh. If she wasn't opposed to violence when someone was undeserving, she'd knock him out and carry him to safety.

BUT that was out of the question.

"Sir, I promise I'm not here to harm you in any way. Please calm down. " Calm. She didn't think she could convince him to drink the draught, but surely there was a spell... and then she thought about what she had cast before. False memory. In the event that it didn't work... raising her wand again she spoke clearly and forcefully, "Confundus, " Maybe then she could convince him to drink the draught.

But this all made her feel like total crap.

Maybe it would work and she could get him out of there. His safety was more important than her own right now. Much more.

The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.

You cast the false memory charm once more and with the addition of the confundus charm, you wait for a reaction from the man. And you get it; the shudder which characterizes the confundus charm means you've successfully hit your target.

The man stands for a few seconds, looking down at the stick in his hand and then up at you again. He carefully places the stick down on the ground, wipes some of the dirt off his suit and gives you a nod. "WELL, I'd love to stay and chat but I have a meeting to go to. Toodles!" He turns around and starts to walk away from you. Only to stop and look around himself in confusion. "Excuse me," He clears his throat and faces a stem of a tree. "I fell and hit my head and now I can't find my way to the elevator. Could you point me in the right direction?"

You've successfully confused the man and all memory of the attack or your patronuses seem long gone. Do you leave the man to chat with the trees? Or do you try to take him with you?

All these choices...

Dora hadn't realized she was holding her breath until ghe man spoke again and placed his stick on the ground. She wasn't dumb enough to put her wand away, but she did hold it down the length of her leg, hand still tightly gripping the pink handle. Brown eyes also swept from side to side as she approached the man, a warm smile in place now.

You catch more flies with honey than vinegar, her cousins words rang in her ears as she stopped in front of him. "Oh my goodness. I'm so sorry! Here let me help you, sir... I'm sorry I didn't catch your name... " Dora spoke with a sweet sing songs voice. The one she usually saved for spooked creatures, babies, and crazy old people. This man was kind of a mixture of all of those things to her right now.

Placing a hand on his arm she started to steer him back the way she had come into the clearing and the forest in general. Her supersensory charm was still doing its job, so she was able to hear anything approaching.

...if anything did.

"Do you want some chocolate? It always seems to help me when I feel unwell, " she asked with a smile over to him.

He was properly confused and forgetful, but it would gut Dora if he still felt sadness or despair.

Because until she had one concrete answers she had no reason NOT to think that the schools had put dementors and Muggles into the forest. Which was unacceptable.

"My name? OH, my naame. It's uh... Uh..."

There is no doubt the confundus charm has worked but the man choose to follow you where you steer him.

"Chocolate?" This certainly piqued an interest. "Don't mind if I do. It's not dark chocolate is it?"

See how caring you are, offering the man some chocolate. It definitely helps after a dementor attack, confundus charm in place or not. Now, it's time to find your way back. Preferably without another dementor encounter so keep your eyes peeled and your ears open...

Dora couldnt help but squint a bit toward the man. Who knew a Confundus charm was THAT strong? She thought it only mildly confused a person. Maybe paired with the false memory charm she like... really did his head in. That thought really gripped at her heart. Speaking of grip... she took a better grip on his arm as she made her way back through the woods. And yes, she listened and looked as she picked her way through, wand still out.

Oh. He DID want the chocolate? Awesome. Without stopping, Dora reached into her pocket with two fingers, so as not to have to let the man go OR let go of her wand, and tugged the chocolate out. "Oh no. Dark chocolate is too bitter for my tastes, I prefer milk chocolate, " she said as she let him go and transferred it to her non wand hand. No need in keeping THAT close to him. And as she kept walking, her eyes swept the perimeter. Maybe a shield spell?

"Impiriano, " she muttered as she did the accompanying wand movement from beside her body. "Hey, so what do you want to do when we get back up to the building? " she was careful not to say castle because she wasn't certain where the man was from, who he was, or WHAT he was, but she thought a small conversation might keep him calm. Or confused. Either one would work.

The man seems to agree with you about the milk chocolate as he nibbles on it with content. You continue tracing your steps back, slowly realizing the fog starting to clear and the air much easier to breathe.

"The building? Oh I'd like to-" But he's interrupted in the middle of his reply as the two of you step out from the forest, unharmed.

As soon as you leave the forest, the man besides you is turned into a dummy, still wearing the same dirty suit. You barely have time to react to this before a woman suddenly reveals herself, after removing a disillusionment charm.

"Miss Umbridge!" She says warmly as she levitates the dummy next to you. As she approaches, you make out the Ministry of Magic badge pinned on her long robes. "You've successfully made it through this challenge, making my presence there pointless, really."

You knew something else was going on in there, you just knew it. A Ministry employee under a disillusionment charm had been by your side, watching your every move, ready to step in if necessary.

"This portkey will take you back to the stands. Congratulations." With her wand in one hand, levitating the dummy, she hands you a worn down, old tie with the other. As soon as your fingers touch the tie, you're whisked away from the woman with the dummy and the forest itself.

OOC: Congratulations on making it through this challenge! You are now allowed to post in the viewing area as well as looking at the other competitors' threads. You made it!

Default Oops... apparently we're supposed to declone here? My b.

Dora couldnt keep the look of utter shock off of her face as the man... morphed into a DUMMY?! They had... but why... who...

And before she knew what was happening a ministry woman appeared. Dora had her wand trained on her before she caught a glimpse of the color of her robes and the badge. Oh bloody well awesome! The Ministry AND the schools condoned this mess?!

Her presence was pointless.... Dora was SURE the look of incredulity was evident on her face as she grab hold of the dirty old tie. Her stink eye was strong, but she knew there was no point arguing here.

None.

And poof she was sucked into the portkey just like that.
