Default Flying Lesson 2: Broom Control

Banner credit: Suziella

The sky above the pitch was grey and hazed on this rather chilly April afternoon. Although the sun had warmed the grass all morning it was now nowhere to be seen, completely hidded behind a thick veil of clouds. Mr. Baldvinsson squinted as he looked up at the towering stands surrounding the pitch. There was a slight drizzle and it wouldn't take long until the rain started falling more heavily.

He lazily mounted his broom in his usual laid back position and hovered around the pitch awaiting the arrival of the students. He hoped they were all wearing clothes that could stand against the rain. It looked like a bit of a storm was gathering...

Which was perfect.

OOC: Hiya folks! This is a lesson open for everyone, no matter age or experience level. Keep in mind this isn’t the second IC lesson of the term. Take a look at the rules before posting and as always, all SS board rules and General Classroom rules apply.

Please keep the chatting to a minimum and let's have fun! <3

Class will start in approximately 24 hours (Monday 17th of July 7pm GMT+2). Class has officially started. Feel free to jump in as if you've been here all along.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!!!!

Flying. It was only the most AWESOME class ever OF ALL TIME. Zoryn was SO ready. SO ready that she had accidentally made her way to the pitch very early. Oh. No one else was here yet? Though, she didn't really mind all that much. Just meant she could have her first pick of one of the school brooms (her parents still weren't entirely convinced that buying her one of her own was such a great idea). "Hiiiiii!" she waved to their flying instructor/groundskeeper. "I'm SO excited to get up in the air today, sir!"

The weather was PERFECT for a flight in the sky. Zoryn said so. Anyways, when would her friends be coming??? She needed some company. Like. Now. Please???

Okay, look. Olivia was WELL AWARE that flying was out of the question for her right now, but that didn't mean that she couldn't show up and enjoy this lesson all the same. Besides, she was one of the best flyers at this school. It would've been a real shame had she not come to educate the masses with her knowledge.

...or something like that.

Taking her time in heading out to the pitch, with many stops and pauses for reasons, the blonde eventually arrived. NOT toting a broom or a bag. Nope. Olivia had only brought her wonderful self today (and an umbrella). Hey, if she didn't believe this about herself, who else would, amright?

"Professor B!" For his acrobatics, Liv bestowed her sweetest smile on him. Despite him being up in the sky. Yep, she was ready to spectate and enjoy the talents of her peers!

Stuck inside with Sirius | *Splish-Splash* | bamBAM | ☁ Spooktacular ☁

The grey sky somewhat reflected the frustration Sam was feeling with some of her OWL studies. No matter how much she stared at her Runes textbook, the words just didn't want to sink in.

She needed a change.

Which was why she found herself wandering towards the Quidditch Pitch, despite not generally choosing to attend flying lessons. She could ride a broom safely enough, but didn't have one of her own, and it wasn't something she'd generally taken much pleasure in.

But it was raining, and inside felt stuffy, and the Groundskeeper was cool...so why not?

An impervious charm or two later, and she was ready and pitchside. "Hey Mr. Baldvinsson!" she called up to the Groundskeeper in greeting. Oh, and Zoryn was there too. Sam grinned at the girl's excitement, glad she wasn't the only one braving the April weather. "What d'ya reck'n we'll be doing today?" Didn't seem like the best conditions for racing...

It was going to rain, hard. It probably wouldn't even take long. It was obvious from the way the sky was darkening and the temperature was dropping. But despite the slight drizzle in the hair, frizzing up her baby hairs, she was basically skipping down to the pitch, broom on her shoulder. There wasn't even any charm on her '"flying-in-the-rain" appropriate clothes. She figured that if rain was meant to make playing Quidditch --and flying in general-- harder, then she might as well embrace it.

And so, she was. No impervius charm on her, thank you very much, apart from her goggles. The ability to see what you were flying into was still very much needed.

But maybe the rain had scared people away? There was a distinct lack of students around and Daisy smiled politely at all of them, even if she only really knew Olivia by name. The others were Junior Commentator of Task Three and Dora's Umbridge Person of Importance. And Olivia; the Gryffindor's presence did give her pause, being vaguely aware of what had happened (her boyfriend was very respectful of confidentiality agreements, but she had seen the state of his shirt that day), but ultimately she decided that fresh air was always good and so was exercise. Clearly, the blonde was feeling much better and that was a thing to be celebrated.

"Professor B!" She didn't have to look for him, having seen him fly around the pitch as she approached. It seemed perfectly normal to her that he would be flying already. In fact. She lowered her broomstick and kicked one leg over it. "Are we meant to join you, Sir?"

Please say yes.

Time for Flying! Emmeline hoped that they were going to do something cool today. She skipped over to the lesson area from the creature barns happily. Her first flying lesson ever had been a little frustrating, but since then she'd had loads of fun on the super slow school broom. Plus, Professor B always planned weird interesting stuff for them to do on their brooms.

The first year was a little surprised to see Miss Olivia here, but she gave the older girl a BIIIG smile all the same. She was glad that Miss Olivia still felt like coming out for flying lessons, even though Emmeline reallly hoped she'd be allowed to fly again soon. She waved to Zoryn and everyone else she knew before grinning up at Professor B: "Hiii, Professor B!" He always looked so happy kinda lying down on his broomstick like that.

There were a few habits Stasya had fallen into when it came to Flying class. One of which was going into it completely confident that she could do whatever it was the groundskeeper had planned for them, and she wasn’t about to let a little drizzle stop her. She’d just made sure she was prepared, swinging a bright pink umbrella from her hand as she’d made her way over to the pitch. It wasn’t raining hard, so she hadn’t felt like she needed the umbrella just yet. She’d given Emmeline a grin, though, falling into step beside her as her best friend had come from the direction of the barn. “How’s Sirius?,” she asked, curious as usual. She was planning on going over to see Dobby and Albus after the lesson after all.

She’d sent Liv a big grin, along with Zoryn, Daisy and the Ravenclaw girl who’d been there before her, before she’d looked up to see Mr. Baldvinsson up there on his broom like usual. Now for her other habit when it came to this class. “Góðan daginn, herra Baldvinsson!,” she called up to him. She’d already figured out he liked hearing Icelandic. It didn’t hurt to play on that a little, even if she knew she wasn’t a complete failure at flying either. Plus, it was practice.

The gray skies were no hindrance for Skylar as she made her way out to the quidditch pitch for another flying lesson, broomstick in hand. She already knew how to fly, of course, but any excuse to be out on the pitch and in the air was one the fourth year didn't need to be told twice about. Even if she wasn't sure she trusted Baldvinsson's judgment, after the 'Creaothceann' lesson. But he was the flying instructor and for that she approved of him.

It was going to rain. Not that it bothered her, as she'd flown in rain and it would be a good challenge for her.

Noting the Professor in his usual position, laying down on his broomstick, she smiled up at him and took note of Daisy who seemed ready to kick off and join him. Yes, please. Could they? Or at the very least, she supposed they could have some extra hovering time later?

FLLLLLLLLLLYING!

Derf was stoked, as per usual, and was sprinting while all but tripping over his robes with his OWN broom clutched in his eager hand. Actually, he was tempted to just FLY down to the pitch since the groundskeeper hadn't minded so much when he had just taken off all the previous times. PRAISED even, but he refrained for now.

But like...liiiiiiiiiike...if the man DIDN'T want them up on their brooms then he really shouldn't be on it himself, you know. It was a monkey see monkey do sort of situation and Derf really liked bananas. Derf was actually just about to do just that when Stasya's words caught his attention. "What does that mean?" he asked as he came to a sudden stop beside her, his heels digging into the pitch to do so.

SUMMER FOREVER

Well.. the weather was rather dull, Etta thought as made her way down to the quidditch pitch for the flying lesson. Not that the rain was going to stop her from having a good time, to be honest. After all the studying and homework she had been focused on lately, she just needed a change and this was it. She noticed the professor hovering above them, giving him the biggest and happiest grin possible. Yes, she was in an extremely happy mood.. too noticeable, was it?

"Hello, professor! Hope you're doing well today." Etta greeted cheerfully before joining her fellow classmates, giving them all a smile and a wave. She wondered if they had to join him.. but Daisy had already raised that question so she simply waited, wishing they could just start flying already.

Flying? Definitely, yes!

Vivian was so pumped to finally have a reason to get on a broom and whoosh around. The Slytherin didn't even give a care that it looked like it was about to storm this afternoon because being able to hop on a broom was well worth any weather condition. Today, she had worn her special coat, which her Mama Fairfield had charmed with Impervius and other weather-resistant spells for rainy and stormy days like now. And she definitely had the perks of being Elise Fairfield's niece... or so Vivian would like to believe, but it worked sometimes when getting VIPs and all.

Skipping towards the pitch, Vivian beamed and waved at the Groundskeeper who was already flying! "Hi, professor!" The Slytherin greeted him and went over to stand next to Skylar. "Were we supposed to join you up there?" Okay, so she was excited. It was too evident. Could they fly now?

A loud, excited voice cut through the sound of the rain and the flying instructor raised his head to see Miss Spinnet making her way across the pitch. ”Miss Spinnet! I’m glad you’re excited.” He smiled and was only vaguely aware of how her excitement bought herself some extra credit. ”Welcome to flying class, as soon as your classmates join us, we’ll be kicking off.” Hypeeeeeeeeeee.

The second student to join in was Miss Phillips. A very talented flyer indeed but one he knew wouldn’t be on a broom that day, that she showed up nevertheless showed great spirit and passion. Once again, the flying instructor was impressed. ”How nice of you to join us, Miss Phillips. Welcome!”

The flying instructor hovered past Miss Phillips to greet the next arriving student. ”Welcome to flying class, Miss Tyler!” A very good friend of Miss Umbridge. Yup. He knew stuff. ”Impervious charm, hmm?” Clever. He nodded to himself and hovered by her.

Another talented and excited flyer joined them next on the pitch. He barely had time to greet her before she had mounted her broom. YASSS. GO! FLY! Fly all my children, FLYYY. ”I would want you to hold off on that, just a while longer until the rest of the class has arrived.” Not like she didn’t basically LIVE on the pitch anyway. Heh. ”We’ll be kicking off soon.”

YAS. Haraldur smiled at the young Hufflepuff when he ran as fast as his legs could carry him. "Mr. Ashburry-Hawthorne, welcome to another day of flying." He didn't really need to ask if he was excited. It was quite obvious. It was also quite obvious the flying instructor felt pride watching the kiddo.

Haraldur left the Hufflepuff prefect to hover towards the next arrival. "Hello to you, miss Fairfield." Haraldur was always flying. Always. Being on the ground was just not for him. "In a minute or two, miss Fairfield. It's almost time to begin."

After greeting Miss Fairfield the flying instructor glanced past her up to the castle. With one swift wand movement, the large gates to the pitch swung closed.

"Welcome to today's flying lesson." The instructor didn't have to use sonorus to get his voice to carry above the sound of the rain. He rarely used that spell actually. His voice was booming enough as it was. "I'm glad to see you're all excited for this lesson, in spite of the weather." The old man, in his leaned back position, hovered around the group while he spoke. Now and again he ruffled his feathers to get the rain out of them. Yes, he ruffled them. "I could have had this lesson inside, in one of the class rooms or in the Great Hall to avoid the weather." He grinned at them. "But then what's the fun in that?" Twinkle, twinkle EYE TWINKLE.

"If you can't fly properly in the rain, then you can't really fly. I for one, don't want to be controlled by the weather."

As he spoke, the rain carried on with no sign of stopping any time soon. t was quite the opposite.

"Has anyone flown in any less than favorable weather condition? How did you experience that?" He clasped his hands on his tummy well defined chest muscles hidden underneath loads of clothes. "If you haven't, what do you imagine is different? What would you have to be extra careful with?"

OOC: ilyilyilyILY! <3
All right, answer Haraldur's question on how the weather can affect your flying. Don't hold back on the creativity! Late to the party? Jump in as if you've been here all along, I won't tell on you.

You have 24 hours to answer this question. Class will move on tomorrow evening 18th of July 7 pm GMT +2.

Being first meant that Zoryn could wave to EVERYONE else who came next!!! Well, except the people she didn’t know and or wasn’t friends with. BUT STILL. She gave a smile to Olivia, before beaming HUGE at Dora’s most important person (Sam Tyler) who came to stand near her. “Hopefully flying,” she replied with a nod, not even registering that it may have been a silly response to the question.

Then there was the pretty girl who was dating Zoryn’s HERO (unfortunately), then Emmeline and Stasya who both got smiles ‘cause they were SO young and cute mhm. She also gave Derf a HUGE wave, before reverting her attention back to their flying captain. Could they go up in the sky now???? Zoryn’s robes were starting to get real soggy.

Zoryn clung onto the Groundkeeper’s every word (which was a rare thing for a Zoryn to do) and nodded LOADS. Zoryn, for one, wasn’t gonna be controlled by the weather EITHER sir! She thought about the question only for a few seconds before letting her hand sky rocket!!! “Must be harder to keep your eyes open! AND THEN it’d be hard to fly ‘cause if your eyes are closed HOW CAN YOU SEE???” It was a BIG concern now that Zoryn thought about it.

OR maybe it just sounded like a lot of fun.

Yeah. Definitely fun. WERE THEY GONNA LEARN HOW TO FLY WITH THEIR EYES CLOSED????

Skylar glanced over at the sound of Vivian's voice next to her and smiled at the blond. And then they were starting and the Professor was booming down on them from his spot hovering. Huh, what had he said to Daisy now? To hold off on joining him just yet?

Uh, yes ... She has, which, they were challenging themselves with flying during the storm today?

"Well one thing about it, is that it's actually kind of refreshing. At least while you're out there, but of course then when you're done flying, you need to quickly change into dry clothes. Lingering in wet clothes puts you at risk to get sick." Something she knew from experience, as last time - and the only time thus far - she flew in the rain, she wound up with a really bad cold.

Kicking off soon. Okay, Daisy could do that, especially since Professor B. was getting her all hyped up. Were the others feeling it too? The soon to be seventeen year old looked around as if expecting fist pumps and salutes from her fellow students. There were none, that she could see anyway, but that was fine. Maybe they were saluting inside like she was.

Was it too much to ask to make "If you can't fly properly in the rain, then you can't really fly." the new school motto?

The Gryffindor's -- had Mr. B called her Miss Spinnet?? -- answer was .. well, hilarious and Daisy grinned brightly at her. YES, she could feel the enthusiasm there. It was always the young ones who got excited about flying. Looking up at the instructor, she raised her hand."Sir, from my experience--" as a U17 Chaser, had she mentioned that? "-- flying in the rain can be dangerous. Or, rather, more dangerous than it normally is." There really was no point in denying it; she had come to terms with that fact long ago, really. Around the time she broke her arm for the third time, to be precise. "There's the visibility issues mentioned, not aided by the fact it's usually darker when it's raining. And the water can make your broom slippery sometimes, if you don't use the proper equipment." Or the right charms. "One tiny distraction, your foot is off the foot-rest and you may very well fall down."

Not that that had ever happened to her.

Lately, anyway.

Before she could react to the groundskeeper’s question back to her, Derf had skidded to a stop next to her and Stasya had grinned at him. “I just said good afternoon to him. But in Icelandic ‘cause my mama’s from there and so’s he so I figure he likes hearing it.” A long description, but she’d decided he needed to know it. Plus, just in case he was going to ask, she’d answered him already. So she wouldn’t have to interrupt anyone when the lesson really started.

Plus, she had to answer the groundskeeper. “Ég er góður takk. And I kinda agree with Zoryn. Maybe it’d be hard to see in the rain, and then flying would be dangerous ‘cause then you might run into things.” She also opened her umbrella since the rain was coming down harder.

SUMMER FOREVER

Well, they weren't going to be flying just yet. That was disappointing BUT anyway. Besides.. the professor was right. If one can't fly properly in the rain then one can't really fly.. Etta looked up at him as the others came up with different responses, her eyes slowly flickering towards the dark sky. She'd actually never flown in the rain before so this was going to be an entirely new experience. Whoops.

"Perhaps, one's concentration. Rain is distracting, isn't it? And obviously.. if your visibility is affected, your focus on the game is also affected.. right?" Etta answered or rather guessed. She was suddenly not that excited about flying, honestly. She nervously looked at the sky for a few more moments before her attention turned back towards the professor.

So it was raining harder now. These questions were interesting and all, but maybe they should fly before it was like pouring and answer questions when it was dry-ish? Still, Emmeline grinned at Stasya and answered, "He's good, but he won't go outside in annnyy rain. How're Dobby and Albus?", she whispered 'cause now the lesson was totally about to start. She grinned and waved hi to Derf as he skidded to a stop right next to Stasya's other side, and shot Zoryn another smile a few minutes later 'cause she thought her answer was really smart.

Of course, all of her classmates' answers were really smart. The first year tried really, really hard to think of something they hadn't said yet, and finally went with: "Umm if there's loads of thunder, you won't be able to see OR hear anything either." Which would be really bad if you were trying to play Quidditch in the rain, right? Or doing any flying with other people when you needed to talk to them sometimes. Speaking of the rain, it was coming down harder now. The Gryffindor pulled the hood of her school robes up over her head, but it still wasn't bad enough that she'd consider not flying today. No way. She could hardly wait to get up there, and reallllly hoped that that was Professor B's last question so they could FLY!

Flying. It was for sure a messy day for a flying lesson. The lesson should have been in the Great Hall but the room would've been a disaster!

Flying was a fun sport. The weather didn't matter.

Vivienne had flown in snowstorms for goodness sake! Rain? That's a no brainer!

Please, professor. The cold never bothered Vivian, anyway. Rain or shine, the little Fairfield would not have had doubts in going to a flying class. Besides Herbology, the Slytherin loved being able to hop on a broom and she would take any opportunity to fly around. She obviously agreed 101% with everything that the groundskeeper had said. Like the weather wasn't going to stop her, and where was the fun without a little risk?

Oooooh, her tiny Gryffindor side was shining so bright today. Perks of having Edmund as her dad.

Situational questions definitely got Vivian thinking. Hmm. The blonde tilted her head as she listened to the groundskeeper talk about how the weather would affect one's flying performance. Personally, she didn't think it would affect that much... but maybe for the unexperienced ones. She had an auntie who played Quidditch professionally and, as a fan who love to watch her aunt's matches during season, good weather wasn't always guaranteed. A game was a game, and there wasn't really any reason to cancel Quidditch. Vivian raised her hand to share. "Well, first off... we wouldn't be able to see anything clearly. And if you're easily annoyed, the downpour of rain would be quite a struggle," she said, nodding when she finished. "But aside from rain, there are also times when it would be extremely hot, and heat would lead to people sweating... which would be an uncomfortable feeling for some." True story, bro.

Yes hello HI, sir!

Derf simply BEAMED at the bear of a man and happened to catch Zoryn -
although really it was HARD to miss her wave, you know? - eye and wiggled his broom eagerly at her in lieu of a wave. In the next moment Stasya had his full attention. "Ooooooooooooh right right right," he nodded, somehow entirely forgetting that Stasya could speak the language and was of that heritage. Or, more accurately, forgot that the groundskeeper did. He did not forget big details about this friends. And yes of course Emmeline got a wave as well.

When the first question rolled around, however, Derf was left mostly awestruck listening to Daisy Carden speak because HELLO they were in the presence of a future professional quidditch player. Not to mention that she practically WAS pro now, you know? Being on the U-17 teams and all. It was super prestigious! So yeah...oops. Not answering the question and just looking at the older Slytherin in affectionate aaaaaaaaaawe.

Yeah. Definitely fun. WERE THEY GONNA LEARN HOW TO FLY WITH THEIR EYES CLOSED????

Haraldur looked over at the excited hand waving and nodded to the young Gryffindor. ”Exactly, Miss Spinnet. A very useful talent to be able to fly with your eyes closed. It forces you to really be one with the broom. Very good.”

Stasya spoke up next, in English this time, and the instructor hovered her way. ”Yes, that can happen to anyone.” He nodded to her. Yes, yes, YES. The flying instructor zoomed over to the firstie and gave her a few many small nods of encouragement. ”Yes, Miss Sparkes, yes! Your hearing is definitely affected, very clever.” Flying through a thunderstorm however was dangerous in many ways. ”If you can’t hear as well as you’re supposed to and you can’t see clearly, the danger in flying is even greater. Well done, Miss Sparkes.”

So true, so true, SO true. On that note, the instructor hovered to the front of the class, only glancing up at the sky once to make sure the weather wasn’t getting too out of hand. So far, the wind wasn’t picking up and there were no thunder. For now.

”You’re all correct, kids.” Because kids they all were. ”The weather will always affect your flying, how much it affects you is completely up to you. You can’t control the weather but you can control your broom. The key here, is practise.” He placed his chin in one hand to rest and hovered back and forth in front of the small group as he continued. ”Useful charms and equipment are all very good but practise enough without them and you’ll find them becoming useless. Not to mention your general flying skills will be greatly increased.”

Slowly, small puddles of water grew around the pitch, soaking into the grass. Would make for a messy and muddy landing later on. ”Quidditch is never cancelled because of rain and every upper hand in the game is of extreme value. Some professional players therefore treasure their time practising in the rain, in preparation of what may come. There is an annual competition one can attend that will definitely test endurance and flying ability through difficult weather. Does anyone know which competition I’m thinking of? Tell me your thoughts on it. Do you agree it’s a valid way to practise your flying?”

OOC: Aiiight, Haraldur has a special event in mind, do you know what it is? What can you tell him/the others about it?

You have 24 hours to answer this question before the rain washes you away. We will continue tomorrow evening, 19th of July at 7 pm GMT + 2.

Quidditch is never cancelled because of the rain. But it's cancelled because of threats, was what Skylar wanted to retort back, even though she knew Baldvinsson had nothing to do with that, which was what kept the fourth year from making commentary back at him.

Annual competition to test endurance and flying ability? "Are you talking about the annual broom race held in Sweden? 437 miles from Kopparberg to Arjeplog. I think it sounds like a challenge, but definitely not for the faint of heart, as it wouldn't necessarily to be valid for practicing one's flying. Like any marathon or game, it requires proper training and experience." And she would leave off there, even though she could have said more but figured that was enough for now...

Wait, were they were going to be mimicking the broom race? There wasn't 437 miles of pitch, not to mention it would take too long to complete, but they can do a modified version, perhaps?

Henry couldn't help but to periodically glance up at the sky. Part of it was watching those dark clouds that threatened rain and wondering when it was coming and part of it was an impatient longing to get up in the air. But he was sure that was coming soon enough. Otherwise he was sure class would have been held inside like Mr. B said, which was a horrifying though to the 17 year old.

He was fairly well accustomed to flying in inclement weather too, and he knew it to be true to have to practice and be at the top of your game to fly well. All good points and advice, Mr. B.

As for the question, he thought a moment. From what he was describing, Henry thought Skylar had probably given the correct answer. But he raised his hand anyway. "I agree that you're probably meaning the annual broom race. It might be good practice for an experienced flyer, but not so much for someone just starting out." For the reasons that Skylar described, and more. "But I think a case could be made for any broom game to be good practice in one way or another. They all have their challenges. Though really, any kind of flying can be considered practice." Just like with anything, it took continued practice and dedication to be any good at it.

THEY WERE GONNA LEARN HOW TO FLY WITH THEIR EYES CLOSED?????? That's what Zoryn decided to hear, anyway. She also noticed that bright grin that Levi's girlfriend gave her and y'know what, maybe Zoryn would like her after all. So she returned the bright grin with one of her own. Zoryn liked her answer too.

As for the next question, Zoryn had NO idea. But she didn't want to pass on a chance to talk, so her hand shot up in the air anyway. Hopefully by the time it was her turn she'd know the answer. Except she didn't. "I forgot what I was gonna say," yeaaaaaaaaaaaah. That happened.

Okay, but when were they gonna get to FLY? WITH THEIR EYES CLOSED?

'Cause Zoryn was starting to get antsy.
