Default Extra Credit- Olivia Holden- Confounding Concoction (Potion) - Post 1
Slytherindor ♛ The Crazytastic Besties ♛ Shan Watson ♛

Extra credit?

Olivia was going to be there. Merlin. She REALLY was starting to sound like her older brother (Simon)- she'd never tell him that she went to an extra credit activity. Nope. Nu-uh. He was never finding out. Her lips were sealed. With her backpack slung over her shoulder, she headed into the lab and was ready to brew the potion and its antidote. But which potion should she choose? Hmm... the Confounding Concoction could be awesome. She placed her bag on the floor by her table and opened up her textbook to find the exact potion.

Ah. Found it. Now where to begin. Cleaning out her workspace and her cauldron of course! Had to have everything nice, tidy, and squeaky clean before she began her work. She cast scourgify on the workspace and then a quick augmenti in the cauldron. Then she took a brush and scrubbed the cauldron down before drying it with a heating charm. Perfect. Olivia was ready to go collect her ingredients.

She set about looking for the ingredients. Water. Jobberknoll feathers. Leeches. Olivia grabbed two feathers and two leeches and set them back on the table. The water was easier to get. First she would need something to measure the water in though. A graduated cylinder or beaker? That would do the trick. And she could also practice the non-verbal magic that she had been working on with Professor Marchand. She took her wand casting a non-verbal augmenti into the cauldron and followed it with another non-verbal heating charm. Now she needed to wait for the water to boil. Hmm...

What to do now?

In the meantime, she could prepare the jobberknoll feathers. She needed to separate the barbs from the shafts of the feathers.

SPOILER!!: Confounding Concoction- Mild

Use/Effect:
There aren’t many, if any, good uses for this potion, though it is not illegal. It could be used on prisoners or enemies but, as it has unpredictable effects, it is not recommended for such purposes. The confusing concoction is usually studied merely for honing brewing technique or to ensure proper brewing of the antidote.

Ingredients:

water (500mL)
jobberknoll feathers (2 barbs)
leeches (juiced; 1-2)

Instructions:
Bring water to a boil
Separate the barbs from the shafts of 2 jobberknoll feathers
Place barbs in boiling water and stir 12 times clockwise and 7 times counter-clockwise
Boil for 30 minutes
Add leech juice by squeezing one leech into the cauldron and stir in an unpredictable fashion
Keep stirring until potion should thickens (within 5 minutes)
If potion does not thicken after 10 minutes of stirring, add another leech and continue to stir unpredictably until thickened
If potion has still not thickened after an additional 10 minutes, start another brew

Notes:
This particular brew is a mild variation of the Confounding Concoction but, should be effective for several hours if an antidote is not administered.
It can be very difficult to discern whether one has ingested confounding concoction. Depending upon how strongly it is brewed and the person it is administered to, a person may only show a tendency to forget things and the effects will wear off in a few hours. Or, with a stronger version, a person can become completely confused and disoriented and could possibly suffer from amnesia.
There are no discerning smells or tastes so this potion can be easily disguised and given to the unwary.
One side effect of this potion is an increased thirst.
People under the effects of the confounding concoction can be very unpredictable.

HOLISTIC ACTRESS {X O} EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED

There was one thing Mel liked more than brewing potions in classes. Brewing potions outside of class for extra credit. The credit was something she could really go for right about now in the winter when holidays were about to come around…maybe it would be smart for her to go brew this potion somewhere else? She didn’t want people to get the wrong impression.

Really, the Gryffindor was just curious. She wanted to know deep down what her mind thought her favorite scents would be…that was the only reason she had set out to brew amortentia today nothing more than the simple desire to know.

Looking around the nearly empty room she sent the only other inhabitant a quick wave as she set about setting up her cauldron and workstation. ”Hey Olivia” she smiled over to her housemate as she began to set up her ingredients. ”what potion are you working on?” she asked quietly before glancing over at her cauldron once more ”I’m…uh doing amortentia to find out what the scent is for me so…if you want to smell it later and see what your nose comes up with I’m game” she grinned. Just don’t drink it. That would be dangerous.

Setting up a bezoar stone in a small closed container on her workstation was her backup of course if anything went wrong. All right. Time to get to business.

Taking her wand she proceeded to clean her cauldron, knife, stirrers, and mortar and pestle with a swish of her wand each time. We’ve got this, she told herself again as she began to separate the sneezewart heads and petals and took her moonstone and proceeded to grind it into a fine powder with her mortar and pestle. The last bit, she took the eight leaves of alihosty and began chopping them neatly and cleanly before setting the ingredients up in their own little bowls. Pointing her wand at her cauldron she cast a quick and steady “aquamenti” and watched as the water filled the cauldron “finite” the spell ended with a flick and her wand immediately was used to set a fire below the cauldron. Taking the bowl of chopped sneezewort petals she immediately dropped them into her cauldron and waited to see what would happen next.

SPOILER!!: potion list

Amortentia

Effect: Love potions cause a infatuation or obsession for the brewer or the first person seen. Amortentia is the most powerful.

Ingredients
• 8 flower heads of sneezewort (seperate the petals beforehand)
• 8 berries of atropa belladonna
• 8 chopped leaves of Alihotsy (prepared beforehand)
• One frozen ashwinder egg broken in 8
• 8 tea spoons of powdered moonstone
• All the thorns of 8 roses
• 8 drops of salamander blood
• 8 table spoons of peppermint

Instructions
1. Prepare the sneezewort, alihotsy and moonstone.
2. Fill the cauldron with purified water and add the sneezewort petals
3. Light a fire under the cauldron and set it to maximum
4. Add the heads of the sneezewort
5. Stir 8 times clockwise with a metal stick
6. Add the berries of atropa bellandonna one by one
7. Sprinkle Alihotsy leaves in a circle in clockwise direction
8. Wave your wand. The colour should turn to dark red
9. Wait for 25 minutes for pewter cauldrons, 13 for brass and 8 for copper
10. In the meantime, break the egg into 8. If you break it into more pieces accidentally, get another egg.
11. When the time is up, add the egg parts
12. Stir vigorously clockwise with a metal stick until the colour is purple
13. Sprinkle the moonstone in the middle of the cauldron
14. Throw all the thorns in quickly
15. Add the drops of salamander blood one by one: with each drop, observe that the potion turns to its distinctive mother-of-pearl sheen.
16. Add the peppermint spoon by spoon. Stir clockwise with a metal stick slowly until it dissolves.
17. Wave your wand again.
18. Put off the fire when you see the spiral steams and smell its aroma.

Extra notes
• The duration of the effects (usually up to 24 hours) vary depending on factors such as the weight of the person drinking the potion and the attractiveness of the person with whom the potion is supposed to make the drinker obsessed. The effects wear off naturally over time, but can be renewed by administering further doses of potion. Therefore, there is no overdose.
• The effect is near instantaneous: the drinker appears "pale and sickly" and becomes obsessed with the brewer or the first person seen and excited or dangerously unstable towards others.
• A hate potion can cancel out love potions and vice versa. There is also a proper antidote.
• The brewer doesn't have to be present for the effect if it's that sort of love potion.
• The drinker does not forget what he or she did while under its influence.
• Love potions mature over time; so the longer it is kept, the stronger it will be.
• Amortentia's characteristics are a distinctive mother-of-pearl sheen and spiral steams. Its aroma is different for everyone and reminds each person of the things that they find most attractive, even if they don't acknowledge or are unaware of their fondness themselves.
• The smell of Amortentia can change as you see new things and people.
• Life advice from Blaise Bellaire: You should NEVER give a love potion to a girl who's bigger than you and throws a harder punch 'cause when it wears off she'll remember everything and beat the living Circe out of you. It causes strong dislike after.
• May cause strong feelings of love for the brewer

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

It was the perfect day to begin her potions extra credit activity. Why? Because of her timing. Walking into the potions lab, Jessa was awash with instant relief when she realized she would have the lab to herself today! How WILD was that?? No one to distract her--as the young girl could sometimes be quite easily sidetracked--and not a soul she had to be conscious of. She could pick wherever she wanted to work with and unless someone were to walk in, would have a lot of time to herself.

It was a little ironic, brewing this potion given recent events, but this was the potion the Ravenclaw had planned to brew the moment she'd seen the notice and didn't plan to change her mind.

Her motives behind this choice were completely unrelated; innocent even. She just hadn't brewed one before and wanted to know if it had the same effect on creatures as it did humans. It would be interesting to say these, all she had to do was get the potion brewed.

Jessa prepared the sneezewort, alihotsy and moonstone as the first set of steps dictated before thoroughly scourgify-ing her cauldron inside and out, then scourgifying everything else she would be needing for this session. It was important to ensure everything was cleaned. No tainted results for her thanks. Given she didn't know any water more pure than the kind that came from her wand..."Aguamenti." The Ravenclaw watched the water pour until she thought it was enough then added the sneezewort petals.

In you go.

"Incendio." The fire was brought to its maximum. It didn't say whether or not it should have been brought to boil first--which would have made a huge difference, so Jessa would assume it meant she should go ahead and add it without that step. The 8 heads of the sneezewort were dropped carefully into the potion.

She grabbed the metal spoon she'd cleaned earlier and dipped it into the solution she had thus far. 8 times....clockwise? Counterclockwise....? Oh, right, clockwise.

One....two...three...four...five...six...seven.... eight...

Continuing the trend of eight, Jessa grabbed the eight berries of atropa bellandonna and plopped them into her cauldron one by one. Her hand was set low as she added them, reducing the likelihood of splashes that would only hurt her.

Jessa scooped the alihotsy leaves into her hands and began sprinkling them into her cauldron in a clockwise circle into her cauldron. Once the last of them had fallen in, she took her wand and gave it a wave, ridiculously pleased to watch the potion turn a dark red. That meant she was on the right track, good good. Everything was fine so far.

In the 25 minute wait she had ahead of her, the girl reached for the egg and did her best to break it into 8...somewhat even pieces. No more, no less. She so had this.

And now to wait.

The Gryffindor had separated one jobberknoll feather into barb and shaft when she heard a familiar voice call out to her. She glanced up and saw her housemate and roommate, Melbourne, arrived. Oh hey friend! "Heya Mel! How's it going?" she asked the other girl with a happy grin. "I'm working on the Confounding Concoction. A mild form of it, of course." If she did a full strength one, now that wouldn't be good at all! Knowing her luck, she'd probably somehow ingest some of it and that would be horrible. Amortentia, hey? That certainly peaked this girl's interest. "Sure, that would be awesome. It'd be interesting to see what it smelled like. Thanks!" Nice offer! She then separated the other jobberknoll feather into barb and shaft and then glanced at her notebook to see what she had to do next.

Alright. Next she had to place the barbs in the boiling water. Okay. She placed them in the water and quickly picked up her spoon. Twelve stirs clockwise. One. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. Seven. Eight. Nine. Ten. Eleven. Twelve. And now seven counterclockwise. One. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. Seven. Now she set a timer and let the mixture get to a boil. It needed to boil for thirty minutes. She took a step back from her work to see how the other two students were doing. Both Amortentia? Maybe she should have done that.....

Liquid boiling....... BRRRRRRING! BRRIIING! chirped her timer, notifying her that it was time to move onto the next step. When she read the next step, she just shook her head. Nope. Nu-uh. Oh Merlin, this was the part that she knew that she wouldn't like at all. The part with the leeches. Shudder. Did she really have to?

She did.

Olivia picked up a slimy leech from the side and brought it over the cauldron and then squeezed it. Ew. Ew. Ew. Ew. She remembered getting one of these stuck to the back of her neck and a few on her shoulder last year. UGH. SHE HATED LEECHES. Little blood sucking, nasty things. Could she be done? Was it over? Was that enough juice? Yes. Next step now. Oh Merlin.

What?! Her eyes widened at the next instruction. Stir in an unpredictable fashion. Confusing pattern perhaps? So then she stirred three times clockwise, five times counterclockwise, then seven times clockwise, once counterclockwise, and then she stirred in a figure eight for at least three rotations. Was that unpredictable? Oh Merlin. She hoped so. She continued stirring in an unpredictable fashion just a little longer before resuming a more regular pattern. With each stir, she could feel the potion becoming thicker and thicker.

It was almost there.

Kane didn't want to SERIOUSLY use this love potion on anyone - but he DID have a fun idea in mind for testing it, and thankfully someone had agreed to be in on his little idea. Hehe. First things first, though - he had to actually MAKE it. And he had to make it well, otherwise...well, he didn't want to think of that.

He pulled out his notes, where he had written all the ingredients as well as the steps from his textbook, and consulted it quickly.

Alright, time to start with the sneezewort. He hoped that name didn't mean he'd be all...sneezy from it. Although that was highly likely, especially since his allergies had been on the fritz ever since moving here. He counted out eight flower heads and then took them back to his station, carefully separating the petals. He whistled happily to himself - mainly to make time go by faster, because this was borrrring and tedious. His nose did get a little itchy from working with all this stuff, but nothing he couldn't just wrinkle his nose to get rid of. He put all his flower heads to the side after he separated them, but still kept them separate - just to be sure he kept track of how many he was using. So essentially he had eight little piles of sneezewort. Nice.

Next, he took the moonstones and added them to his mortar and began to grind away at them. This was always one of his LEAST favorite parts. He had muscles for sure from gymnastics, but he still had to really work in order to grind it. Which made sense, because they were ROCKS and he had to make them POWDER. After what felt like ages (but was probably more around 15 minutes) he had a sufficient supply of powdered moonstone. He pushed it aside so he could use it later.

Finally, the alihotsy. He grabbed his cutting board and a knife and took the eight leaves he had gathered and got to chopping. Kane wasn't super good with chopping things - he was always more of a baker rather than a cook, and baking didn't usually require such fine chopping. Still, it was faster than crushing the moonstone. A few moments later, he smiled at his pile of chopped leaves and pushed that to the side as well. Everything was chopping and crushed and whatnot - time to move on!

HOLISTIC ACTRESS {X O} EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED

Melbourne smiled over to Olivia and shrugged when she asked how things were going…”things…are…meh? I mean, I’ve mainly just been studying for OWLs y’know…boring stuff” she somewhat frowned at the idea of the upcoming examinations but still, she knew that they would have a handle on it…right…nothing deadly would happen, or well she hoped at least.

”oh awesome…I hope whatever mine smells like doesn’t make me hungry” she chuckled as she started to get back to work on her potion. Pointing her wand under her cauldron she muttered a quiet “incendio” as she set the flame under her potion making sure that it was set as high as it could go.

BURNING TO THE MAX.

Melbourne carefully added in the eight-sneezewort heads before picking up her metal stirrer. ”lets do this” she grinned as she began to stir the concoction. The methodical way her stirrer moved through the liquid was almost relaxing but still, she never lost count. Eight clockwise stirs for eight sneezewort heads.

After a quick where she rested her stirrer against the edge of the cauldron and stretched her fingers she was back. The game was afoot. Well, a quick glance over at Olivia and Mel just winced…leech juice…what even was leech juice?

Dropping in the eight berries of the atropa belladonna and sprinkling the alihosty leaves in a circular counter clockwise motion Melbourne was ready. Wand in hand she simply waved it above the cauldron and watched as its color changed – it was no longer a weird gloppy concoction with floating bits of this or that. It was almost magically smooth and deep red in color. Still, now she just had to wait and so, she turned her attention to cleaning her used utensils off.

”leeches are the worst,” the brunette muttered over to Olivia whom she assumed also disliked the bloodsucking pests. The face she was giving after all made that a little more than evident.

Once the 25 minutes had run off, Jessa reached for the eggs she'd only just prepared and added them to her cauldron.

Oh shoot, she would be needing the metal spoon, not the wooden one. Merlin why hadn't she read over all this while she was at the cupboard grabbing the equipment? With a sigh, she turned and headed back over, grabbing one of the metal ones near the back before returning to her brew.

Before even attempting to stir, the Ravenclaw cast a quick scourgify on the spoon to ensure it didn't allow any contaminates. No way was she prepared to begin again and have another 25 minute wait, not when she had other potions up in her dorm that would need tending to.

Jessa stuck the spoon into the cauldron and stirred as vigorously as her arms would allow. Clockwise. Shame it didn't tell her how many stirs. Could be a while before this thing began turning--oh look, purple. Didn't take as long as she thought it might have. Good! Was she was certain the solution was an even coating of purple all over, she reached for the moondust and sprinkled it in the middle of the cauldron.

The next part was a little tricky because she was going to have to do it quickly, without hurting herself. Jessa grabbed the thorns and quickly but carefully tossed them in next.

Now where did she put that salamander blood? Oh, there it was. One by one she added the drops of salamander blood, watching the way the potion slowly began to take on its mother-of-pearl sheen. A real beaut it was.

The 8 tablespoons of peppermint were the next to be added while she counted them out in her head. She reached for the metal spoon again and got back to stirring. Again it would be up to her observations to determine when she could stop stirring. Jessa waited until she was sure the last of it was dissolved entirely before removing the spoon and replacing it with the other equipment. At this point she drew her wand and gave it a wave above the cauldron.

At the sight of the spiral streams and the smell of fresh parchment, the Ravenclaw put of the fire, pleased she'd gotten the solution done. Just had to brew the antidote then she could go test it out.

not throwing away my shot | Slytherpuff | roll for initiative | woof you ❤

Olly had been thinking about what he wanted to do for this potions extra credit assignment. He could do anything, really. So he might as well do something fun. And something sort of hard, so he could challenge himself. In the end he decided on a love potion. He did know that he was going to have to try it out as part of the assignment, but that would probably end up being really entertaining actually so he didn’t mind.

When Olly arrived in the Potions lab he began by setting up all of his stuff. He cleaned and set out his cauldron and all the tools he needed, and then he gathered the necessary ingredients. For this potion there were a few things he definitely needed to prepare ahead of time so he made sure to do that too. He had eight sneezewort flower heads whose petals needed to be separated, eight leaves of alihotsy to be chopped, and eight teaspoons of moonstone to powder. Olly took care of all of those and then he was ready to begin brewing.

He filled his cauldron and dropped in the sneezewort petals. Then he grabbed his wand to light the fire under the cauldron and made sure it was set to the maximum setting. The petals were already in the cauldron, but he added the heads of the sneezeworts after lighting the fire. He wasn’t really sure why it was necessary to do it in that order, or why the petals couldn’t have stayed on the heads, but if that’s what the instructions said then that’s what he would do. Olly grabbed the metal stick and began to stir. Eight times clockwise. Eight petals, eight heads, and then eight clockwise stirs. He found that numbers repeated a lot in potion making. Something that set the magical task apart from mundane cooking. There had to be some sort of magical property in the repeated numbers. Olly found the whole thing fascinating, even if he didn’t completely understand the why.

When he was done stirring it was time to add the next ingredient. He had eight berries of atropa belladonna that needed to be added. He dropped them in one after the other until all eight had been added to the cauldron. Then it was time for the alihotsy leaves he’d chopped. Sprinkle the leaves in a clockwise direction. He wondered why it even mattered, which was something he wondered a lot, but did what it said nonetheless. When that was done he waved his wand over the cauldron. The potion turned a deep red color. According to the instructions that was exactly how it was supposed to look and Olly was pretty proud of himself for doing so well so far. Not that he hadn’t expected to be doing well. Potions was one of his favorite - and best - subjects.

Now he had to wait. Olly’s cauldron was brass so he had to wait thirteen minutes. He kept an eye on the clock as he read ahead so he was ready and would know what to do next. He also worked on breaking his frozen ashwinder egg into eight parts. It was hard to break, and did not like breaking evenly. The first time he tried he just smashed it against the counter and ended up with twelve parts. So he got a new egg and tried again. He was onto his fourth egg before he managed to get the correct number of parts. By that time the thirteen minutes was nearly up and he didn’t have to wait long before adding the eight egg pieces into his cauldron. He grabbed his metal stir stick and stirred the potion vigorously. So vigorous, in fact, that before too long his arm was starting to hurt. He willed the potion to change color faster. By the time it became the correct shade of deep purple he was sure his arm was going to fall off.

Olly picked up the moonstone that he had powdered before starting and sprinkled it in the middle of the cauldron. As soon as he was done with that he threw in the rose thorns. There sure were a lot of eights in this recipe. Was eight a particularly romantic number, or something? In any case, now he required eight drops of salamander blood. He dropped them in one by one. By the time he was done the potion had changed color again.

He was almost done. Olly added eight tablespoons of peppermint before stirring clockwise again until it had all dissolved into the potion. He set the stir stick to the side and picked up his wand to wave it over the potion. He watched, waiting for the steam to spiral. When it did he turned off the forward and leaned forward to get a good whiff of the potion. Olly recognized the smell at once. It was like he was standing right next to him. He quickly pulled back and bottled up the potion, trying not to think about the spell and instead remind himself that it was time to brew the antidote.

Alright, time to fill up his cauldron. Kane had to get the purified water from someplace other than his wand, so he walked up to the potions cupboard and began to shift things around until he found it. He grinned and picked up the vial, which would be more than enough. He walked back to his station and filled the cauldron up with the purified water before taking his sneezewort petals and dropping them in. He then picked up his wand and pointed at the base of his cauldron. "Incendio!" he muttered, smiling as a bright fire lit up the base of his cauldron. He turned up the heat so it was at the maximum strength and then moved on.

Now for the HEAD of the sneezewort. Plop plop plop. He added all eight flower heads to the cauldron, then promptly grabbed his metal stirrer. He popped it in and stirred his potion eight times clockwise, as instructed. Once that was done, he picked up the berries and dropped each one carefully into the potion.

He felt kind of like he was making potpourri, not a potion...with all these berries and flowers and whatnot. No WONDER it smelled so good...

Sprinke the alihotsy leaves in a clockwise circle? Ok...he picked them up between his fingers and started dropping them in the cauldron, starting at the top and moving his way around as he did so. Once he made his way around the cauldron, he had dropped them all in. Ok, so next was...wave your wand. Easy enough. He did so, watching with delight as it turned dark red. MMMM, it looked sort of good - and he was sort of sad he wouldn't get to taste it. Someone else would, though...

And now he had to wait. For twenty five minutes to be exact, which felt like FOREVERRRRR.

Default Extra Credit- Olivia Holden- Confounding Concoction (Antidote) - Post 3
Slytherindor ♛ The Crazytastic Besties ♛ Shan Watson ♛

Olivia chuckled at Melbourne’s comment concerning the Amortentia she was working on. “Aw, Merlin. That’d be awful. Imagine if it was your favourite dish.” Or if it tasted like caramel or chocolate or worse SALTED CARAMEL. The two girls would have an emergency on their hands. Meanwhile back to waiting for her potion to thicken… If it would ever do so. Three minutes down…. O.o …… ONLY THREE MINUTES….?!

While she waited for the potion to thicken up, she glanced up at Melbourne who had made a comment about the leeches. "Yeah... They're not fun. I'm not the biggest fan." She chuckled a little before going on to explain. "I had an unfortunate run in with Peeves and Miffy last year which ended up with me getting three of these stuck to me." Shiver. Ugh. It had sucked. Fortunately no cute guys had seen her rushed off to the Hospital Wing... Only Healer Reed saw her in such a state. "It sucked." But fortunately Professor Greyvson had been there to escort her and Carlton to the Hospital Wing. Nice lady indeed.

Olivia continued to stir and could feel the potion thickening up nicely and it seemed like it was ready! Though it didn't smell like anything... which was good because it wasn't supposed to smell. She poured the mixture into a vial, labeled the vial, and then set about cleaning her work station. Once it was all nice and tidy, she pointed her wand at the cauldron, casting a non-verbal Augmenti before heating the water to a nice boil. While waiting for the water to boil, she set about finding the ingredients necessary to create the antidote. First, she got two jobberknoll feathers, galangal, and a dried leech. Measuring out each of the ingredients to the specified amount, she returned to her station to check if the water was boiling.

And the water was boiling! Awesome. With the water boiling, it was now time to make the antidote. She glanced down at her textbook. Now Olivia needed to once again separate the jobberknoll barb from shaft. Carefully with her knife, she did so and then glanced at the textbook. She added the two jobberknoll shafts and then set a timer for ten minutes. Every so often she would stir the mixture in the clockwise direction. Soon enough, she got in the rhythm and then set her spoon to stir on its own with a simple charm. In the meantime, she placed the five grams of the powdered galangal in the mortar and set it on fire. She watched as the powder slowly started to turn light golden then golden and then a deep brown. When it reached the deep brown colour, she emptied the powder into the cauldron, set a timer for five minutes, and then almost whisked the mixture counterclockwise. Her arms became tired every so often so she paused to take a quick break. Merlin. It was rough having zero upper body strength but hopefully this would work. It felt like a good workout anyway.

When the timer went off, Olivia most happily removed the spoon and checked her instructions. Fifteen minutes for the mixture to simmer… and for Olivia to regain feeling in her arms. She set a timer once more and then shook her arms out. Ahh… After doing so, she decided to turn her attention to trying to crush the dried leech. Scrunching up her nose, she grabbed the knife and pressed down on the leech as if the leech was a clove of garlic that she was trying to crush. It did the trick; however, the crushed leech wasn’t in equal parts. Ah well. It was close enough. The less she had to touch it, the better she would be.

BRRIIIING! chirped the timer and it was time to add the somewhat neatly crushed leech into the cauldron. Good riddance, thought the Gryffindor as she watched it plop into the mixture. Then she set another time and continued stirring. Five minutes to go and then she would be free! Free to try the mixture out and time to give her arms a rest. Oh yes, she looked forward to that very much.

And the timer chirped again! It was time. That two minutes had felt longer than the fifteen minutes that she had just experienced. She supposed that’s what happened when your arms got really tired. Merlin. She should have practiced another spell or charm non-verbally but had opted to do it the good old-fashioned Muggle way because… well- because it was reliable. Yet her arm was aching. Taking the mixture off of the heat, Olivia placed the spoon beside her cauldron and sighed. Now she would just have to let it cool before she could put that in a vial.

As she waited for the concoction to cool, she wondered if perhaps a cooling charm could be used on it. Hmm… That seemed like a good idea; however, she didn’t risk it as she felt a bit nervous about what would happen if something went wrong. So instead she waited and listened to the hands on her watch tick with the passing seconds. When ten minutes had passed, Olivia figured that it was cool enough and so she decided to bottle up the mixture into a vial. She also made sure to label this vial because if she didn’t…. Then well. Bad things could happen.

With both vials labeled and resting on the bench, she set about cleaning her cauldron and work station. It needed to be super clean. Two scourgify’s would do the trick, she figured and went to work. As she cleaned, she hummed to herself. She couldn’t wait to give the potion a try (though she was also terrified if she messed it up). Perhaps it would be wise to ask for another student’s help to help make sure she took the right potion in the right order. Olivia nodded. Mm… That would be wise.

SPOILER!!: Potion: Antidote
Antidote for the Confounding Concoction

Use/Effect:
As the name implies, the antidote for the confounding concoction is a potion which counteracts the effects of the confounding concoction.

Ingredients:
water (500mL)
jobberknoll feathers (2 shafts)
galangal (powdered; 5g)
leeches (dried, broken up; 1)

Instructions:
Bring water to a boil
Add jobberknoll feather shafts and boil for 10 minutes with constant clockwise stirring
Light galangal powder on fire in mortar until browned and emoty into cauldron
Stir vigorously for 5 minutes counter-clockwise
Simmer for 15 minutes
Stir dried leech into potion (direction is not important)
Stir continually for 2 minutes
Remove from heat and allow to cool before ingesting

Notes:
You won’t be able to break the dried leeches up evenly but, it will not effect the potions efficacy.

Default Post 1 - Elixir to Induce Euphoria
BOOMBAYAH! | #PuedoPorquePiensoQuePuedo | Certified Blank and Random Person | Raventastic

Ava knew what potions that she’s going to brew for this extra credit project. Yup, she chose elixir to induce euphoria. The Gryffindor just thought that this elixir was quite challenging and not to mention that it would be fun if she could use this for people… Particularly a certain Professor, ahem. This would be fun.

As she arrived at the potions lab, Ava put on her coat and set up the ingredients and equipment that she would need for this brewing. Looking at her notebook, she started gathering the ingredients from the storage room like fluxweed oil, vervain root, bloodroot stems, calendula pollen, asphodel root, hyacinth flower, small lovage leaf, bouncing bulb, peppermint, belly frog slime… ugh, billywig sting, alihotsy leaf, glumbumble fluid and wahoo bark. Merlin, that’s a lot of ingredients, huh? Now she already had the ingredients, Ava started the brewing by cleaning all the equipment that she would need by using the scouring charm. Everything must’ve been clean, clean, clean. Then she started by preparing the wahoo bark infusion. Adding cold water to a small cup, she shredded the bark and soaked in it. Alright next… time to brew!

After she made sure that the cauldron had been cleaned, Ava cast aguamenti into her cauldron and started a low flame. Then she added 6 drops of fluxweed oil to the water and leave it while she worked with the bloodroot stems. Taking a knife, she split the stem lengthwise and scraped out all fluid and fibrous material from its inside. Once she’s done with all three stems, she crushed them with mortar and pestle into a fine paste and then add them into the cauldron. With a wooden stirrer, Ava stirred clockwise and counterclockwise alternately and slowly until a light steam rose from the cauldron.

What’s next? She took a peek from her notebook and read the next steps. Ah okay, the calendula pollen. Slowly she added the pollen into the cauldron and stirred the mixture again in clockwise motion. And then… she cleaned the mortar and pestle, added the vervain root and crushed it, then she added asphodel powder and 6 drops of fluxweed oil. Ava crushed them all until it formed a thick-consistency paste. Once it’s done, she added the paste to the cauldron and… Okay, the mixture turned pink which is… a good sign. Then she added hyacinth flower and stopped stirring the potion. All she needed to do now was waited until it boiled.

SPOILER!!: her note

  • Leaving the potion to continue boiling, shred the bouncing bulb.
  • Add the shredded bouncing bulb bits, stirring until dissolved.
  • Your potion should still be shifting color and bubbling, and should occasionally have droplets bouncing up and down now.
  • Add the peppermint, then cover your cauldron and turn off your flame. At this time, allow your potion to steep while you harvest the slime off the belly of the frog.
  • Add 1 tablespoon of the frog slime, then stir three times clockwise. Add the billywig sting and the remainder of the slime.
  • Add one whole alihotsy leaf and follow IMMEDIATELY with a drop of glumbumble fluid.
  • Bring back up to a boil for 60 seconds
  • Turn your flame back off and add three drops from the wahoo bark infusion to the potion as it cools.
  • Your potion should be an iridescent concoction that shifts from one vibrant color to another and seems to be slowly bubbling even when cool.

HOLISTIC ACTRESS {X O} EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED

Mel was bored, absolutely bored of waiting but really, Olivia was making this entire thing tolerable. Now was a time that she wished she had a copper cauldron for the sheer reduction of wait time on potions.. Still, that was also because she was never quite sure if these pewter cauldrons were ones that had lead in them…wouldn’t that be horrid? Make a potion to heal someone and accidentally give them lead poisoning? The absolute worst thing ever…well, actually purposefully harming someone would be worse but this was just the opinion of far too over dramatic of a Gryffindor teen.

Turning her attention back to Olivia she just grinned. ”I’d probably drink it if it smelled like Pho…I just love that soup its ridiculous.” she admitted with a laugh ”but imagine it’d smell like everything we love all together in one…like I’d bet mine will smell kind of like baked things?” because she loved baking…merlin it would probably smell divine.

”whaaaat? Nooooo that is not fun at all! If I’d been there I would have y’know tried to help get them off or like attack Miffy for being a rude little thing.” she wasn’t rude anymore, now, now she was just gone. Mel was glad, obviously, for the fact that Liv had come out of it alright. Leeches were just nasty little blood suckers.

With a soft sigh she just decided to watch Olivia as she mixed her potion until her egg timer went off. Huffing she blew some hair out of her face to entertain herself as she waited and waited and waaaaaaaaaaited. All the waiting was killing the mood.

Right.

She needed to break up her ashwinder egg. With a careful hand she began smacking it until it cracked in half. Thank you eggy. With deft…or well, more clumsy skill she managed to break the egg shell into eight distinct pieces. Sure one was the size of a pence piece but that didn’t matter did it? All it said was eight pieces…did it matter if one was more a shard? Still, she just dropped the egg pieces into the cauldron and began to vigorously mix the concoction with her metal stirrer. It took a while but the color had changed to a charming purple color and then the tricky parts…well, it wasn’t tricky it was just not always the easiest to drop something into the direct middle of the cauldron. Sprinkling eight teaspoons of moonstone powder over the middle of the cauldron she glanced at her next task.

QUICK.

She had to be quick.

Grabbing the rose thorns she tossed them into the cauldron with her gloved hands. Thank merlin for gloves, she didn’t need people to fall in love with her if they accidentally drank the potion. Merlin that would be bad, she was peeeeeerfectly fine just being herself thank you very much. Still it was time.

There were only four more steps until she was done with the potion.

Taking her dropper and the salamander blood…sorry little friend, she carefully as she dropped one bit of the blood into the cauldron. The potion’s color changed, became more shimmery and less…PURPLE than it had been before almost as if some had turned the opacity of the potion down. With a grin she dropped another drop of the blood into the potion and watched the color shift once more. The color shifted and changed even more until it was a mother-of-pearl sheen with the last drop of the magical blood.

Alright. She was almost done.

Taking her spoon she added in every single spoon of peppermint one at a time. Really it was ridiculous considering that she had set up a new spoon for each portion of the peppermint. With the peppermint added she began to mix it stirring clockwise until he peppermint dissolved into what seemed like nothingness.

With a wave of her wand over the cauldron she just waited…what was going to happen now? She wondered as she looked at the potion and waited for the spiraling steam to appear.

Default Post 1: Mutatio Animalia/Antidote
Let your light shine || Be the sun || You're important. Always.

Due to time restraints, Noelle had asked around and had indeed gotten her hands on a copper cauldron. It seemed some people had connections. She really should invest in one of these things. Maybe her family would splurge to be able to get one. Surely, she would need one in uni.

Anyways, back to the task at hand. Noelle knew exactly what potion she was going to be making today. Mutatio Animalia. It was Noelle's favorite potion. Her big sister had introduced it to her in her fourth year. Each year, Noelle made it a few dozen times. The potion usually wore off over a period of time depending on how strong the potion was. But upon further research, Noelle was able to find an antidote.

First things first, Noelle went to the potions storage room to collect her items. She'd brought a basket and grabbed the following list of supplies:
SPOILER!!: List of ingredients
8 leeches
1.5 cm of boomslang skin, dried under sun for 7 days
2 horns of bicorn (grated)
1 scoop of frozen lacewing flies at -21°C for 7 days
6 measures of Fluxweed picked on waxing gibbous

The ingredient called for one more item. Noelle already had that in her pocket. She collected a few strands of fur from one of the young crups by the barn. They were all too willing.

Placing her ingredients out in the order they would go in, she double checked to make sure that she had everything. You could never be too sure. Once she was sure she had it all, Noelle began by cleaning the copper cauldron that was given to her to use. and give back in one piece.

Next, Noelle filled a measuring cup with 700 ml used from her wand and then poured it into the cauldron. Then she lit the cauldron on low. No need to use her wand, she would need it elsewhere. After about 4 minutes, the water was boiling. Grabbing the leeches, she added them into the boiling water. Taking the boomslang skin, she gently laid it over the water surface. She was careful not to touch the boiling water. She didn't want any burns. It didn't take long for the skin to dissolve. She took her metal stick and stirred 6 times counterclockwise before turning the heat up to maximum.

While she waited the 23 minutes it took to heat up, Noelle looked over the potion again and started on the antidote. First, she went to get the supplies from the storage room.
SPOILER!!: List of Ingredients
3 ounces purified water
3 doxy eggs, whole
2 ounces horned toad innards, chopped
twelve sprigs fluxweed, crushed to a fine powder

Then she prepared her ingredients and put them in the order that she would need them. It was always helpful to have things in order.

It was handy that she had her own cauldron available with her too. She cleaned it first before putting all the ingredients into the cauldron. She wouldn't be able to go from there before she needed to add a drop of her other potion into the mix.

So, going back to her first potion, Noelle was happy to discover it was almost time. Using the last few minutes, she grated the bicorn horns she pulled out. Once it was ready, she turned the heat down to medium and then gently added in the grated horn. She made sure the color was what it looked like. The familiar smell which wasn't appealing, wafted to her nostrils. She knew that in a few more steps, she'd have a finished potion.

Pulling her wand out, she waved it over the potion and clearly said, 'Permuto motus'. Then Noelle quickly but gently added in the wings. She grabbed her metal stirrer, before realizing she needed her wooden one. Quickly changing the two, she used her wooden stick to stir. Starting in the clockwise direction, she alternated between clockwise and counter clockwise and stirred a total number of fourteen times.

She even had a song that she sang in her head while she did it.

She added the fluxweed and brought the heat to low. She smiled because the potion was looking great. She'd made it enough times to know.

Now was the waiting game.

Covering her other potion, she grabbed her other books so she could study and do homework while the potion brewed. She had 7 hours to wait.

------------------------------------------

One the seven hours were up. They were the longest seven hours ever. Noelle pulled the cauldron from the heat and turned it off. Then she pulled the crup hair from her pocket. Her clothes had changed since then so this was a new pocket. She added a few strands in and then took a few drops to add it to her antidote potion.

Heading over to do her antidote potion, she turned the heat up high so it would boil. Once it started to boil, she lowered the heat and waited for it to simmer.

Then she added a few drops of her other potion into this antidote. Noelle did it slowly and gently. Once that was added, she pushed the heat back up so that it would start to boil. She watched the potion as it boiled until it started to turn thick and syrupy. She reduced the heat and allowed it to simmer.

Once it was at the right temperature, Noelle pulled her wand out again. "sperevelio" She said clearly while waving her wand over the cauldron. Once that was done, she had two brewed potions.

After she put the potions into different vials, she cleaned up her cauldrons. She would return the copper cauldron to it's owner before going to find someone to test her potions on.

Who wouldn't want to turn into a crup?

One the mixture boiled, Ava then dropped the lovage leaf and watched it rapidly changed the color, which according to her note it was something that supposed to happen. Good, now she could move on to the next step. She grabbed the bouncing bulb and start shredding it, then added the bits into her cauldron. And obviously she would not forget to stir them until dissolved.

It didn't take a long time for her potion mixture to shift color and bubble once the bulb bits dissolved. There were some bouncing droplets too which was funny, hehehe. And the next step was... peppermint! The Gryffindor added the peppermint, covered the cauldron and turned off the flame. That means it's time to.... harvest the slime from the live frog belly. Ewwwwwww!! Ava then grabbed the frog and cut the belly open vertically. Rest in peace, frog. "Diffindo!" She cast the severing charm and use her bare hands to open it up. Ugh, she should've used gloves. But at least now she did harvest the slime and hopefully it would be enough for her potion mixture. After she's done with this brewing, she might need a long bath to clean herself.

Done with the harvesting, Ava washed her hands took one tablespoon of the slime and and added it to her cauldron, following by stirring the mixture three times in clockwise motion. Then she added the billywig sting and the remainder of frog belly slime. Next, she grabbed the alihotsy leaf and added it to the mixture, immediately she added a drop of glumbumble fluid. Turning on the flame, Ava let the potion boiled for 60 seconds and turn it off again. Once it's cooling down, she added three drops of wahoo bark infusion that she had prepared earlier. Ava watched how her potion turned and wondered if she did good. Well, it turned into an iridescent liquid thing, the color did shift from vibrant color to another and bubbled slowly which means... She did well.

Grabbing a vial, she pour the elixir in and it's ready to be tested. Although... She still needed to brew calming draught for the antidote. Well, let's do that tomorrow. Ava cleaned her workstation, equipment, and everything before she left.

It was almost time for him to move on, so Kane grabbed the ashwinder egg and began to break it into small pieces. He was glad the egg was frozen, which made it a bit easier to break into small pieces...he tried to make them as even as possible, but that was sort of hard, since it was an egg and all.

After he had the eight pieces set aside, he looked up just in time to see that twenty five minutes was up right about....NOW! He took the ashwinder egg and dropped it in, taking his stirrer and beginning to stir, watching for a color change. It was still red, and remained red for quite some time. He kept stirring and stirring and stirring...it felt like his ARM was going to fall off...but eventually, the red started to darken, and then lightened again, and it became a nice deep purple color.

He took the moonstone he had crushed earlier and sprinkled it into his potion, aiming for the middle of his cauldron, and then added the thorns from the roses. It said to add them quickly, and in doing so, he'd accidentally stabbed himself with one on his palm. OUCHHH. Hopefully that was still quick enough though. Shaking his hand to get rid of the stinging sensation, he consulted his textbook again. Alright, what was next?

SPOILER!!: Notebook for reference

Ingredients
8 flower heads of sneezewort (seperate the petals beforehand)

All the thorns of 8 roses
8 drops of salamander blood

Prepare the sneezewort, alihotsy and moonstone.
Fill the cauldron with purified water and add the sneezewort petals
Light a fire under the cauldron and set it to maximum
Add the heads of the sneezewort
Stir 8 times clockwise with a metal stick
Add the berries of atropa bellandonna one by one
Sprinkle Alihotsy leaves in a circle in clockwise direction
Wave your wand. The colour should turn to dark red
Wait for 25 minutes for pewter cauldrons, 13 for brass and 8 for copper
In the meantime, break the egg into 8. If you break it into more pieces accidentally, get another egg.
When the time is up, add the egg parts
Stir vigorously clockwise with a metal stick until the colour is purple
Sprinkle the moonstone in the middle of the cauldron
Throw all the thorns in quickly
Add the drops of salamander blood one by one: with each drop, observe that the potion turns to its distinctive mother-of-pearl sheen.

Default post 3 - brewing the antidote to elixir to induce euphoria (calming draught)
BOOMBAYAH! | #PuedoPorquePiensoQuePuedo | Certified Blank and Random Person | Raventastic

Even though she had finished brewing the elixir to induce euphoria, Ava still needed to be here because Professor Canterbury also wanted them to brew the antidote. And for her potion, calming draught seemed work well as an antidote because it made the person calmer especially after having a euphoria. Hehe. With her potion notebook on hand, the Gryffindor entered the laboratory and started preparing what would she needed for this potion brewing. She read through the instruction again and it seemed not that complicated, okay.

The first thing she needed to do was getting some warm water. Ava got a cauldron and cleaned it with scouring charm before conjured some water into it, then she put it on low flame just to make the water get warmer. Once it's warm enough, she added 6 drops of fluxweed oil into it and moved on to the bloodroot stems. With a clean knife, she split the stems lengthwise, scraped out all fluid and fibrous material thingy from the inside of it and put them into a clean mortar. For the next step, she crushed it with a pestle until it became a fine paste and then add it into the cauldron. She stirred it clockwise and counter-clockwise alternately until there was a light steam rising up from her cauldron.

Continue to the next instruction... Ah, valerian root. Ava minced the root and added it into the potion. Then she added calendula pollen and stirred it three times clockwise. For the next step, she got 2 skullcap leaves, shredded them lengthwise and slowly added them to the cauldron. Hmmm, why it had to be added slowly? Maybe she should ask Professor Canterbury later. Ava then rose up the temperature until the steam rising and stirred the potion slowly in clockwise motion, putting herself in a zen, calming mood. She watched the color because it should've been light blue-green this time.

Bingo.

She exhaled in relief because her mixture color was also light blue-green. Continuing her work, she added asphodel and saw a bright blue flash of light in her cauldron. Next, she added hyacinth flower and watched the potion stopped glowing... Which was a good thing since her notes said so. Ava then left her cauldron and let the potion to steep because she needed to... harvest the frog slime, again. She put on a surgical mask and rubber gloves then get the animal. Poor frog, she muttered. Putting the frog on her chopping board, Ava cut its stomach open using severing charm and scraped the slime from the inside of the belly using a clean spoon. Ewwww... Hopefully it's enough for this potion.

She measured the amount of slime she had harvested and once she got an ounce, she added the slime and then peppermint sprig and waited until it's boiling. Taking off her gloves, she stirred the potion alternately clockwise and counterclockwise. Her potion color became thickened and the color was changed into a deep indigo which meant now she needed to add the glumbumble fluid. Once it's added, Ava continued stirring the potion in clockwise motion until the solid ingredients became disintegrated. Her potion now had thick syrupy consistency with indigo colored and smelled like lavender, warm sugar and sweet mint. It also had light purple-pink sheen in the steam.

It's kind of weird that there's no lavender added but there's a scent of it but her notes said so and her work had finished now. Ava took a phial of the potion and labeled it. Now it's testing time and she already had someone in her mind to be her testing subject.

Having been away from Hogwarts for a few months, Olivia had forgotten all about the assignments that were due towards the end of term. Assignments and extra credit, which one would think didn't too much matter to the blonde given that her grades was already in a free fall, thanks to so many missed homework, quizzes, and tests, However, the Gryffindor found herself determined to turn it all around for herself. Even if it seemed downright impossible, surely there was no shame in trying, right? Besides, she wasn't one to slip silently off into the night. This would potentially be her last potions assignment at Hogwarts. The need to leave things on a high-note was basically overwhelming. Failure felt gross, and she was done feeling gross. To be honest.

Packing into the potions lab on a Saturday, Liv went about setting up two separate cauldrons at the same workstation. The task was to make one potion and then another that would counteract it. Simple enough, so it would seem, though she was choosing to go the more tactical route. More tactical AND more challenging. A possible mistake, but again... Possible LAST Potions assignment at this school.

Okay, but first...she fished for the notes on the two potions she'd be working with. The two thick parchment pages was found folded neatly together in her potions journal, as she'd thought having it copied down separately would be good for when it came time to turn them in. You know, so she could attached the recipes with her notes about brewing and such. Eh, Olivia had thought it was a good idea, anyway.

.

The Love potion...and The Anti-Love Potion. Fitting for her, right? And no, this wasn't her being a stupid, besotted teenage girl, hoping to win the affections of some boy. Please, Liv no longer had time for any of that. Besides, this potion represented the truth of things. Artificial love, as love wasn't real in the first place. It was so easily mimicked, loving someone, and also used to manipulate and hurt others. Just like this potion had done throughout history, the Gryffindor was convinced. So, in the spirit of her newfound clarity...

Also, just for the sake of being able to cross things off a list (and keep things organized), the blonde pulled her wand, laying the two smoothed out parchments pages flat on the workstation surface. "Geminio!" With a flick of her wrist she duplicated the two recipes, folding the two originals up before tucking them back into the place she previously had them. No need for them to get messed up, while she was working. Things spilled, and the extra headache was simply unnecessary. So, fishing a quill from her bag, she laid it (and an inkwell) out before travelling to Professor Canterbury's stores to collect ingredients. The list was extremely specific, so here was hoping she found what she needed without too much trouble. Obviously there were a few things she had in her own collection which was of the standard variety. Salamander blood, peppermint, powdered moonstone, and frozen ashwinder eggs, but there were others, such as the komodo dragon scales and knotgrass, that were mostly used for special potions. Like Polyjuice. Ah, that was a potion she longed to attempt one day, but...eh, that day wasn't...this day. Hm.

Taking a few trips to make sure everything was transported without too many issues, Olivia sorted them, depending on which potion they were to be used in. See, she planned to do this as she had in class, with dual brewing, as it made sense to her that she work within the same small vicinity. So that there wasn't too much running around and confusion for her brain, as that was a new development, thanks to the recent head injury. Bloody rude of whoever had gotten the bright idea to poison her Valentine's day cupcake. She'd bare those scars for the rest of her life.

Rereading the two parchments, checking and double-checking, she carefully collected the sneezewort, alihotsy and moonstone. Those were to be prepared before the potion began. Taking several moments to pluck petals, chop leaves, and grind stones into dust, Liv set the ingredients aside, in their separate containers. Also, the cauldron for the antidote needed to be chilled to three degrees above freezing..... Uuuugh, okay. That wasn't weird at all. Heavily specific, you see? Eh, using some handy dandy magic, because it would take no time at all in that case, she went about layering on cold charms. Things to make it cold, but NOT at a straight 0 degrees. Because then she'd have to warm it up with incendio, and then it would be this whole back and forth thing with her trying to get the temperature just right. Unnecessary headache. Anyway, setting her thermometer to the cauldron's metal side, Liv waiting until it read just right before setting it back on the burner. She wouldn't be using said burner today, but...it kept it in the same area. Helpful.

Right, so...everything was gathered and sorted. She could begin.

Taking a deep breath, she scourgified! the two cauldrons, despite one being extremely cold, Olivia figured dust would be more likely to settle and stick to it if she weren't vigilant enough. Actually, let her JUST focus on the Aggrotentia first. Upon further review, the potion could freeze solid if she didn't keep the contents of the cauldron moving, and then this would be all be for nought, etc etc.

Never mind, Amortentia, she'd be with you shortly.

Laying out her whisk, the blonde quickly made sure each of the four ingredients were measured out beforehand. This would go fairly quickly without her needing to stop and do this along the way. And more of this blasted clockwise versus counter-clockwise. BLEH. Bleeeeh, bleeegh. She'd forgotten about that part. Flugh. Right, very good, okay.

Four ounces of fluxweed sap first. Frowning as she poured it into the extremely cold cauldron, Liv rolled her eyes at having to whisk it when there was so little to whisk. Four ounces of anything barely covered the bottom of a pot, much less a cauldron. Alas, who was she to question the inventor of this potion. Dipping the whisk down into the sap, she carefully moved it in the clockwise direction. Once, twice...and so on and so on, until she'd rotated it twelve times. Theeeeere. Now for the knotgrass, three whole bunches of it; all minced up like a pile of onions.

Dumping that in with the previous ingredient, she set out with more whisking. Only this time, it was to be in the opposite direction. She always had a debate with herself about this, because there was always the fear that she'd be stirring the wrong way. Uncertainty was gross and she was not a fan. Anyway, twelve whisks later in the opposite direction from before and she was ready to add these powdered komodo dragon scales. She did this quickly, too, as she had the Fear™️ about it all freezing up on her.

.....and more stupid whisking. Why had she picked these two potions, again?

Althea reminded herself, repeatedly, that in order to get better at Potions she had to actually practice brewing them. It was such a bother, though. There were so many moving parts and she was never good at measuring things out properly or even timing things right. This was probably a terrible idea, but as long as she took her time things would go accordingly. She hoped so, anyway. As she walked into the lab, she noted the others who were also working on their own potions - even admired them for how concentrated they were - and set off to nab an empty workstation.

She coincidentally chose one next to Olivia, and she glanced over and smiled at the Gryffindor - while also trying to look at what she was working on - before she looked around for her own notes. "Psst," because she couldn't help herself, "Livvvv," she whispered loudly. "What are you working on?" Althea decided that if she was going to talk, then she should also gather ingredients as well. The fifth year bounced over to gather the ingredients for her potion (which, if she did things correctly, the base would also serve as the antidote.)

When she returned to her workstation - she had a relatively light load to carry back - Althea placed her ingredients down and began sorting them neatly before turning to her notes. The Hufflepuff double-checked to ensure that she'd picked the right amount of each ingredient and then began to look over the procedure to brewing it.

SPOILER!!: Emotional Change Potion (+ base/antidote)

Emotional Change Potion

Effect: A half-dark potion that makes the drinker feel one of these emotions: Happiness, sadness, excitement, fear, tenderness, anger.

Ingredients

Two sprigs of lovage
4 mistletoe berries
4 measures of fluxweed
2 measures of boomslang skin
Ten newt larvae
Happiness: 3 Alihotsy leaves
Sadness: A teaspoon of glumbumble treacle
Excitement: Half a handful of ferret fur
Fear: A scoop of black flies
Tenderness: 2 teaspoons of dog saliva
Anger: 7 hippogrif feathers

Instructions

Fill halfway with pure water
Slowly lower your wand as if you're drawing a straight, vertical line with your wand and say Apto pressura (wand movement: straight, vertical line onto the cauldron)
Heat to 100 degree celcius and keep the heat at 100 and ONLY 100 AT ALL TIMES
Chop the lovage well and add it
Wait for 5 seconds
Add the berries right after 5 seconds
Cut the fluxweed leaves in three pieces and add
With a wooden stick, stir once clockwise, once counter clockwise and alternate like that for 7 times: so the total number of stirs is 14
CHECKPOINT: It should be muddy, but not smelly.
Add boomslang skin and wait for 5 minutes
Add the larvae

CHECKPOINT: It should be completely clear like clean water

Happiness: Add 3 Alihotsy leaves and laugh as loudly as you can at a happy memory
Sadness: Think of the saddest moment in your life while adding a teaspoon of glumbumble treacle
Excitement: Sprinkle half a handful of ferret fur and stir it as quickly as you can in the clockwise direction until the fur completely dissipates (usually takes 30-45 seconds)
Fear: Squish a scoop of flies well in the mortar and add it
Tenderness: Gently add 2 teaspoons of dog saliva without any splashes
Anger: Throw 7 hippogrif feathers in as if you're angry at something and they are your relief

Frowning a little, Althea mulled over which version of the potion to pick before deciding on attempting one for Happiness. Ironic, really, considering how depressed she'd been all term. Although - according to her notes, anyway - the potion wouldn't take long to brew, Althea double-checked the instructions to make sure she'd read it right. Once finished, she set out to thoroughly scourgifying the cauldron. When she felt it was clean enough, Althea tilted her wand at the cauldron. "Aguamenti!" She filled the cauldron with water until it reached half-way.

After completing the third round of whisking, all that was left to do was to add the liquid devil's snare (basically). That's what "essence of" something was, right? Essentially, just a fluid version of whatever ingredient.... Oh, and don't forget the last bit of w h i s k i n g. Whoooo could forget the whisking...?? Okay, but for all Liv's griping, she immediately got on that. Just to keep the contents moving and all un-frozen-like. And, as it didn't say to do this but she thought it was common sense, Olivia used a strainer when transferring the potion over for storage......so that it might separate the chunky bits out. Also, she'd only set out five smaller phials, not knowing exactly how much this recipe would produce, but considering the ingredients... Eh, better safe than sorry, she always said.

....and if you were wondering, it had only made enough to fill three.

Okay, so taking a few moments to get that cleared away before starting on the main event, Liv went through and crossed every step off that parchment before toting it to the trash. She might have banished it away but that was basically Transfiguration magic and 100% not her strong point. Know your strengths and weaknesses, kids. #Important .....And suddenly, there was an Althea Kenning in the laboratory and she couldn't help but to smile at the Hufflepuff girl. They wouldn't be working together, but it was still nice to have company, right? Also, that stage whispering game was strong with this one. "Altheeeeaaaa." Liv paused to re-scourgified her second cauldron. "Potions for Love and Hate, because I'm being dramatic as all get out." She'd earned that, she thought. Maybe? "And you?"

Since she'd already prepared a few of the ingredients before knocking out the Anti-Love Potion, Olivia simply went straight into adding the purified water. No measurement required as it only said to fill the cauldron. So, viola! The cauldron was filled! Also, those sneezewort petals were being unceremoniously dumped in. Preparing ingredients beforehand could be pretty cool. Less stressful, for sure. Now...to light this fire.... "It's funny that we're both doing this last minute." It was said super casually.

Mhm, eyes on YOU, Althea Kenning.

The fifth year raised her wand again and lowered it, and said, "Apto pressura" as per the potion's instructions. She was glad she took detailed notes, or else she would've forgotten this step entirely. Moving a little closer, Althea began to heat the cauldron; the Hufflepuff referred back to her notes before adjusting the heat so that it would be 100°C - why so hot? - and made sure to keep it there. Glancing over at Olivia again, she watched her for a bit before returning to her work. "Ah, Love and Hate. So appropriate for this term, don't you think?" She'd done her fair share of loving and hating, she was too tired from it all. "I'm doing an Emotional Change potion. One for happiness," she said this while chopping the sprigs of lovage, "ironic, considering." Her smile left her lips as she added the lovage to the cauldron and waited for five seconds before adding in the mistletoe berries.

"Makes sense," her smile returned, because Liv was always fun to be around, "we live for all of that drama." Althea moved on to cutting the fluxweed leaves into three pieces and added them promptly after. Well, this wasn't so bad, was it? The girl scanned the area before picking up a stick and stirring clockwise, then counter-clockwise, and continued this way until she'd stirred it fourteen times. Again, this was her issue with Potions: there were too many oddly specific instructions that made no sense whatsoever. Peering into the cauldron, Althea squinted her eyes and got a good look at the color of her potion. It was muddy, alright, and she thanked Helga that it didn't smell or else she would've gave up altogether.

Next, she added the boomslang skin and then sat back to wait before putting in the remaining ingredients.

Turning the flame up to the max with just a few turns of her wand, Olivia revisited those sneezewort heads. What was interesting about this potion...was that everything seemed to be in measures of eight. Hard to explain, but the blonde found that extremely interesting. Like, was there a magical reason everything was balanced out in that way? Even the stirring needed to be done eight times. It seriously made her wonder. Also, a metal rod.....That was specific, wasn't it? Never fear, she had one of those. Let her just... Yes, finding her felt case with her knives and rods, she pulled the metal one, cleaning it before setting it aside. The heads needed to be added first. So, after doing that bit, Liv dipped the rod down into the cauldron, carefully stirring it eight times in the clockwise (and RIGHT) direction.... Could you tell she hated counter-clockwise? Hm?

"That's a very interesting choice, mhm." Olivia's bright blue eyes shifted away from her cauldron as she sought out her friend's pretty face. Interesting, indeed. "Think you could spare a few phials for a dear friend?" ....Seriously, though. We were talking severity here. Olivia was a critical case.

Right...back to these berries. And surprise, surprise...eight atropa belladonna berries were required, to be dropped in individually. Not for the first time, Olivia wondered if these procedure steps actually held purposes. Like, was there a reason they needed to be added, one by one? Would the cauldron melt and/or explode?....Luckily, Liv wasn't in the mood to find out today and did as was instructed, taking her time in adding each berry. Without missing a beat, she moved directly on to the alihotsy leaves, which had been also been prepared in the before time. Serious time saver. 10/10 would recommend. The sprinkling them into the cauldron was a bit tricky and just in case they somehow seeped their toxins into her bloodstream just by touch (fyi, she didn't feel like being hysterical today), Olivia carefully slipped on her gloves. There, now she could commence with the sprinkling...

More oddly specific clockwise nonsense....sprinkle sprinkle....sprinkle sprinkle....

Right, it t'was time for her to wave her wand. So, poising it over concoction, she did just that. The wave, just so you know, was a very determined, concentrated one. SO serious.....and the potion DID turn a dark blood red. So, apparently, she wasn't flubbing this up too much. Thanks for that confidence boost, ye old potion. However, she found there was some frustration with having to wait 25 minutes. Ugh, why didn't she own a copper cauldron?.....Oh, right. She wasn't that into brewing potions. Duh. She'd forgotten.

While she waited, the instructions suggested breaking that ashwinder egg into....you guessed it...eight pieces. So to control how the egg broke, because this was something she had some experience with doing as many arts and crafts, she simply took her pairing knife and carved out grooves into the sides of the frozen egg. That way, when she applied pressure, it would break accordingly.... Her mum had taught her this. No one should ever bet against Marilyn Romalotti.

The spiraling steam happened almost instantaneously…or well, that was how it felt for the Gryffindor girl. The scent…it was something she almost forgot to check as the steam spiraled out of the cauldron and off of the warm liquid.

Gosh wasn’t it pretty? She just smiled to herself as she bottled a phial of the liquid for Professor Canterbury…you know she just HAD to show her that she could make it. That was like…imperative right? “I finished it” she chirped to herself as she leaned closer to the steam and sniffed.

Was that…the scent of cold snowy air…or well crisp air and…and…did it smell like…bread? Was that bread? Not like wonder bread but like…the baguettes she used to sell at Alicia’s store? It…it was hard to say? The one note she could really tell, the one thing that made her little heart stall for a moment was the one that reminded her of the magical menagerie. Not just the menagerie of that meeting years ago,…of the Jarvey enclosure.

Heh…did she like him? Well, she probably did but still it wasn’t like that wasn’t expected he was nice….really nice like sometimes made her forget what she was doing and walk into statues nice…well no that wasn’t nice that was just nice looking. There was a difference.

"If it turns out right, you can have it and the antidote," unless she wanted the effects for a few hours. Not that Althea expected the potion to turn out right. She sighed at that thought; she wasn't confident in her brewing capabilities, and while she could harass Levi to help her out, she didn't want to. Mostly because she was always anxious whenever she saw him - constantly worrying over her older brother's well-being had taken its toll on the girl - and also because she was always running to him or Declan for things. She wanted to at least try for herself.

Five minutes had passed before she realized, and Althea went back to work. At last she was ready to add the newt larvae; she made sure to count out ten and dropped them into the cauldron carefully. With this line of work there was a certain finesse and grace in adding ingredients. Althea didn't have this ability, though she tried all the same. The once muddy liquid was now clear - resembling water - and Althea smiled at it. "I guess I can add this one successful potion to my resume," she joked, and continued to look at the liquid in disbelief. Before she got too ahead of herself, the fifth year checked the instructions again. Nodding at each step, she then reached out for the Alihosty leaves and thought about which happy memory to use.

Now this was proving difficult, as her happy memories had been pushed far back in place of unhappy ones, but Althea would not be deterred. She thought back to last summer, when Takeru had been adopted officially, and laughed - again, potioneering was a strange art - while adding the leaves. She'd originally planned on pouring half of the base out to use as the antidote, but figured that she might as well do the potion again so she had enough of each. Althea went and grabbed a second cauldron, cleaned it well, and remade the base for the Emotional Change potion. It didn't feel like it took long the second time, as she'd just done the steps not too long ago.

Once complete, the Hufflepuff looked at both liquids. The Emotional Change potion had finally turned a bright pink, while the base remained clear as water. Satisfied with her work, Althea poured the potion and antidote into some phials and made sure to label them properly before moving to clean up her work station.

Merlin's knickers, could time move any slower?

"You're a lifesaver, Kenning." It was said both seriously and teasingly, all at once. Interpret at your own digression and what have you. Because, truly, her friend was out here saving her life on the regular, and playfully...because Olivia knew things about other things. There was a lot to know considering those stuDy habits. "I'd offer you some of mine, but...I'm not trying to make you fall in love with me."

...and after t w e n t y f i v e long minutes, which snailed by.... and then she was carefully adding in the eight parted egg. When she'd broken it, it'd cracked and fallen apart perfectly. Just saying, her mum might've been a nasty cow, but...she knew her stuff when it came to potions things. And arts and crafts. Both were good. Of course when it came time for the next step, the stirring bit, Olivia snorted. In fact, the term used was 'vigorously'....and despite being in the middle of the dank potions lab, the blonde couldn't fight the sudden bright flush in her cheeks. Goddess, could her mind please not do this right now. Please and thank you.

Too soon. Too soon.

Starting in with her metal rod, she got to work. Clockwise stirring until her arm threatened to fall off....And then stirred some more....and then SOME MORE...fast, around and around in the clockwise motion (thankfully) until it was finally some semblance of the purple color.... That was purple, right? Her eyes had been struggling with colors lately, and yeah... That was something to think about on another day. Right, that powdered moonstone next. As was instructed, she grabbed the container she'd filled before and carefully sprinkled its contents in the very center of her cauldron. The rose thorns followed shortly after, and Olivia paused to mark more things off the throw-away parchment. She was so close to being finished... "Also, you better write to me next term." It was said quite suddenly, as she pulled her dropper from its case.

Eight drops...and supposedly, with each one, this thing was supposed to move closer to a pretty mother-of-pearl sheen. Like the...pearlescent scales belonging to fish. Speaking of, she'd had a gold fish once. Terrible idea. Turns out, Liv could not care for pets that lived in water...Heh, but she digressed. One, two, three, four............all the way until all eight drops were safety inside her cauldron. Nailed it. Now to finish this bad boy off with the very last ingredient: PEPPERMINT. Quickly adding that in by the tablespoon fulls, she took a deep breath.

All. This. Blasted. Stirring.

Grumping about it the entire time, Liv dripped the rod back down into the cauldron, stirring with all her heart until the peppermint fully dissolved down into her concoction. Not to complain too much, but her arms....were really starting to hurt. Next time, she picked a potion based on the amount of stirring alone.. Next time, which would be in an American classroom. Gah, it hadn't hit her just yet, obviously...

Waving her wand for the second time, with gusto, Olivia awaited steam spirals with baited breath. If spirals didn't appear, the entire thing was wrong and she'd have to start over, and if that were the case, it just wouldn't get done. And if it didn't get done, she'd have a breakdown, because she was trying to be a good student here, okay? Come on, potion, WERK with her....

Oh....there they were.

Removing it from the flame, she leaned in, curious about how it might smell to her, as it changed from person to person. LOL, turns out, this was a horrible idea and the Gryffindor found herself backtracking for a moment, as she regrouped. Liv simply hadn't been prepared for the assault of clean scents that made her head swim dangerously. Whew. Right.

Now to bottle the lot. Otherwise, she was finished.
