Default Stone Gargoyle

A large stone gargoyle awaits as you approach closer toward the entrance to the office of Headmistress Hawthorne. It, even though a mere statue, appears to be closely watching you with every step you take. Or maybe that is just your imagination. Nonetheless, as you examine the intricate etches on the gargoyle, it is clear that it will not be moving any time soon ... unless the password is on the tip of your tongue, of course. Once the password has been said, the gargoyle will leap aside to reveal a spiral stone staircase. Step onto the escalator-like staircase, and you will come face-to-face with a polished oak door adorned with a brass griffin knocker that may already be opened if your arrival is expected.

Should it happen to be that you are not one of the fortunate few who know the password, you have three options: decide to speak with the headmistress another time, try sweet-talking the gargoyle into letting you pass through (good luck with that), or patiently wait for the woman to make an appearance. On either side of the entrance are two cushioned chairs for you two sit in, accompanied with end tables that hold various books and magazines for you to flip through to pass the time, if you decide to wait. Maybe you'll get some brownie points if the headmistress catches you reading up on defensive magic, magical hieroglyphs and logograms, and/or famous historical landmarks.

OOC: If you wish to enter the office, please post here first and wait for the gargoyle to respond. Remember that only Hogwarts Staff will know the password to the office. Students should not be entering without being accompanied by Headmistress Hawthorne or a professor, unless he/she is lucky enough to have been given the password ahead of time.

Kitty hummed out loud as she waited outside the Headmistress's office. She was wearing her standard Ravenclaw robes; pinned on the chest of her robe was a Muggle Rights Pin. Her combed hair hung loose around her shoulders and she carried a pink and black bag with books and papers inside.

After awhile of waiting. she started looking through the magazines to find two subjects: Muggle related ones and ones on news in the Wizarding World. They were subjects directly related to what she wanted to talk about.

Nervousness started creeping into her as she waited. Would the headmistress be in a good mood? What if she was super busy?

With a clipboard and quill at hand, Regina was heading back to her office after making her rounds through a few classes that had recently been in session. Her drop-ins this time around were nothing very formal. Just a quick 10-15 minute visit for each to see how the professors were conducting their lessons, whether or not students were responding well, and a number of other things that were on her checklist. Overall, she was pleased with what she saw and was ready to file the papers and call it a day.

After rounding the corner that led to the stone gargoyle, the headmistress noticed a figure in blue robes flipping through the magazines she had left out. As she loudly clicked her way forward, she noticed that the Ravenclaw was one of the school's prefects. A small smile grew on her lips as she stopped between the gargoyle and the girl, noticing the magazine selection and the pin she had placed on her robes.

"Good afternoon, Miss Valentine. To what do I owe the pleasure?"

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

He'd almost COMPLETELY forgotten about this. It's what happened when you had more pressing thin--no, actually this was plenty pressing. Retaining his little freedoms would be given priority over certain other things he still needed to get sorted. It would even provide the right distraction til he went about figuring how to make that work too so Blaise Bellaire made his over down to the stone gargoyles and gave the message that he'd like to speak with the more than above average looking Headmistress.

What? His eyes were functional. 20/20 vision and all.

The quill and notepad floated along dutifully beside him, waiting for the woman to make her appearance. With any luck, his quill won't try to embarrass him. This was serious business.

Brent was in absolute disbelief. Professor Hawthorne...err, Headmistress Hawthorne was here at Hogwarts! Never in a thousand years could someone have made Brent believe he'd move halfway across the world and take a piece of his old school with him! Not just any piece, but the professor of his number one favorite subject! The one he had the most interest in! On top of that, she was running the whole school! Brent felt he should at least make an appearance at her office and say hello.

Approaching the entrance to her office, the first thing he sat eyes on was a huge gargoyle staring him down. "Duuuude," he said aloud. "Cool!" Wait a minute... "Is this password protected?" he asked the gargoyle. Great. Now he was talking to inanimate object. If that was the case, he didn't have the password, so he better figure out another way to get in, or it was a no-go for him. So, umm... "Professor Hawthorne? Headmistress Hawthorne?" he began. "If you can hear me, it's me...Brenton Westwood from Ilvermorny."

...and now he waited to see if he was truly an idiot or not.

Kitty straightened in her chair when she heard the clicking sound of someone approaching, putting back the magazines in their place as she turned to face the headmistress. "Good afternoon, Headmistress," Kitty said somewhat shyly, returning Hawthorne's greeting. "Well, er, I wanted to congratulate you on becoming Headmistress. I've read loads about Ilvermorny and was very excited that you used to teach there." Even though she knew what she wanted to say, unfortunately she hadn't exactly planned how to leapfrog from the greetings to her subject. She fumbled in her bag and took out a few papers and a pin similar to the one she wore. "If it wasn't too much of a bother, I also wanted to get your permission to hand these papers around to students in between classes. They contain information about the Statute of Secrecy, along with speeches by historical activist Carlotta Pinkstone. Then I conclude with some thoughts of my own."

She held the papers out so the headmistress could take them, or just look at them if she didn't want to take them. "I'd also be handing out pins like mine to anyone who was interested. Muggle rights are something that I've always felt very strongly about but not I think is the time to try to affect a change."

When she concluded she held up the pin for her to see. Now that she had started she was on a roll, and her initial shyness vanished.

When she concluded she held up the pin for her to see. Now that she had started she was on a roll, and her initial shyness vanished.
Hawk-like eyes watched as the prefect placed the magazines back in their place and then focused on the fifth year. She couldn't help but pick up the shyness in her response, so the smile on her face remained and her head tilted slightly to one side. Regina was listening, patiently wondering where this visit would take them. The headmistress had a hunch, though she only had a pin to based that assumption on.

Needless to say, she was a little surprised when the conversation didn't start off with the topic of the pin. Instead her former school and place of employment was the topic of their conversation. "Thank you, Miss Valentine," Regina responded courteously. Once again, she was reminded of the Brits' friendliness. "What about Ilvermorny peaked your interest?"

Her eyebrow rose when the Ravenclaw began searching through her bag. The woman held her clipboard closer to her chest, not quite sure what the girl was doing. It was almost impolite of her to do so mid-conversation. Though her brow lowered at the sight of papers and a pin. And so the real reason for Kitty Valentine's visit was revealed.

Without saying a word, her face expressionless, the headmistress's eyes made their way through each and every line. The Statute had always been the cause of intense debate in America, even after Rapport's Law had been repealed. It was a subject she was quite familiar with. In all honesty, she believed that Pinkstone could have been more responsible and didn't think she was the best person to refer to in comparison to other activists that didn't purposefully break wizarding law that had been in place for hundreds of years. Nonetheless, it was a healthy conversation starter, and the girl certainly had something to say about it in a way that wouldn't put her in prison.

"You have my permission to hand out this information as well as the pins," she finally stated, "between and after classes. I trust that you are aware that there are still very strong feelings about this particular subject in today's wizarding society, even among your peers. You will be facing mixed opinions on this matter."

The gargoyle remained static as ever when Blaise Bellaire approached it. The boy's face was one that the statue had become quite accustomed to over the years and was not shocked to be reunited with him so soon. It was tempted to remain unmoving out of spite and keep the boy waiting, though knew the new boss wouldn't be too fond of that.

After a few minutes, the gargoyle leaped to the side, inviting the Gryffindor to step onto the staircase that would take him up to the headmistress, who was currently sitting at her desk. The door at the top of the stairs was even open, almost as if she had been expecting him to make an appearance.

OOC: You may now post in the office.

Though the boy's shouting for the headmistress did not go unheard. The woman who had been casually reading that day's edition of the newspaper in the seating area behind her desk heard him, and moments later the gargoyle broke its silence (a rare occurrence) before moving aside, "There's no need to shout, boy. Up you go." It decided against scolding him about not setting an appointment or getting the password ahead of time. It already had said too much.

There were many things that she loved about Ilvermorny. "I like how it's not at all elitist, and I like how students are sorted into houses. Many times I've wondered what house I would be placed in. It's brilliant how some students get the choice to be in all of the houses. Also I love the history, the story of Isolt and James, and how a Mugle was one of the founders of a wizarding school. I read that there was a Pukwudgie living thee named William, and that some think he's the same William as in the story. Doyou think he is?"

The topic was then switched back to her original intentions, with the headmistress giving her permission to do exactly what she wanted. "Thank you headmistress," Kitty said, beaming happily. "I do understand that the Statute is probably the most controversial subject among in the magical world and I know most people don't agree with me, because if they did then there wouldn't be a Statute. So I promise to be respectful of other people's opinions and debate passionately but not unreasonably." In her opinion that was a pretty good Ravenclaw style speech.

Speaking of which... She held out a pin to the headmistress. "Would you like one?"

Brent was still standing there in awe of the stone gargoyles. Professor Hawthorne was guarded by these things! Duuuuuude. She was suddenly a lot more powerful and a lot more awesome! He was so caught up in studying them, that he was caught off guard when they spoke, and he actually found himself jumping back and instinctively reaching for his wand. He didn't actually draw it, though, and he also got the impression that he was probably making himself look really silly...

...especially if the headmistress saw him.

So he was being allowed inside? "Cool!" he said. "Thanks, man!" he told the gargoyle, giving it his usual slang response. He had no idea he was supposed to make an appointment and all that jazz. When the pathway was cleared, Brent started the journey upward. He was going into the head honcho's office! Duuuuuude.

Speaking of which... She held out a pin to the headmistress. "Would you like one?"
Her eyes appeared to light up a bit at how highly the Ravenclaw was speaking about Ilvermorny. Regina was quite glad that, even with a large ocean separating them, that the reputation of her former school was widely known. She could not deny the girl's valid statements about the place. "Yes, the school is quite democratic due to the school being part-founded by a No-Maj. Given the history of Wizarding America, I find that to be quite fascinating."

There was a short pause in her speech as she recalled her own sorting, back when she was much younger. Standing in the entrance hall, with the Gordian Knot on the centre of the floor, was still a vivid memory for her. "Since you are a Ravenclaw, Horned Serpent might be a likely choice. Though, the two sortings are very different from each other. The sorting selection at Ilvermorny goes much deeper than Hogwarts, so there is a good possibility of being placed in any of the houses." She remembered three of the four wooden statues reacting to her: the Horned Serpents glowing forehead, the roar of the Wampus, and the beating wings of the Thunderbird.

Kitty's question about the infamous Pukwudgie was want she was not certain of. There were a number of Pukwudgies that lived and worked at Ilvermorny. She recalled there being one named William, though he didn't appear to be that old. "I am not sure if the original William is still living, my dear. If he was, he'd be nearly five hundred years old. There is a chance, though I wouldn't be surprised if any Pukwudgie at the school today named William was kin to the original William."

Approving of the girl's understanding on the touchiness of the subject and how she should approach others about it, the headmistress said no more to the prefect on that regard. She knew that the girl was mature enough to understand that not everyone was going to have the same thoughts she had on the subject. Regina personally saw that there needed to be a Statute to keep wizards and witches in line to an extent, though she did believe that No-Majs had rights. "Thank you, Miss Valentine," she said, taking the pin she was holding.

Noelle kept looking despite the professor telling her to be safe. She couldn't help it. It was Carlton! Precious pea Carlton! "Yes ma'am" Of course, she was still looking. "We need to go to the portal too. We need to kill that thing." Was it alive? Who knows, but Noelle certainly did believe that.

'Carlton needs to be saved out of it though. We need to come up with a plan. Maybe attach a rope to some students and have them go in and get them." Was Noelle willing to be one of those patients?

OH YES
It was obvious that the Gryffindor Prefect was every bit as shaken, but as the adult here, Rosalyn needed to do her best to keep her composure. Instinct was telling her to run to the Sixth Floor and enter the portal, blowing all caution to the wind, but that was stupid and dangerous when they had no idea what was inside there.

"We will be dealing with the portal, rest assured. It won't get the best of us; Hogwarts always bounces back." Look at all the dangers the castle has faced and it was still up and running. "We will get Carlton back, but I think it's best if the Staff heads inside if anyone goes. We do not know what is in there so it's far too dangerous. You and your fellow students can help in other ways." So yes, Noelle could still help them in getting Carlton and any other students who might vanish back.

As she talked, Rosalyn headed them towards the castle and up to the second floor, stopping once she reached the stone gargoyles. It really helped knowing the password because otherwise she had no idea how long she would have to wait for the Headmistress to head this way. After giving it to the stone gargoyle, she waited for it to let them gain access.

Noelle's adrenaline was pumping. She was ready to burst through that portal and hex whoever or whatever was in there and save her precious pea of an optimistic boy, Carlton. She didn't know anyone else had been taken as of this moment. She would later.

Noelle barely registered what Professor Newton was saying. She was forming a plan in her head even as she followed, raced beside the professor to the Stone Gargoyle. She'd only been in the Headmistress' office once before. When she was taken back to school from her Dungeon Days. She eyed the stone and waited for it to open.

"Do you think the Headmistress will let us help?" Meaning the prefects and anyone else that wanted to help.

After the return of Junia Botros and Henrietta Kramer from the world on the other side of the portal, the headmistress had been making many trips from her office to the restricted area on the sixth floor to check in those who were on patrol. It made her feel uneasy that the mysterious hole in the wall was still there, though she was relieved that those who had been dutifully at their stations had been keeping anyone from foolishly jumping through it.

She was actually returning to her office after checking in on one of the professors that was now patrolling the restricted area. So far, so good. No one was going anywhere near or, most importantly, coming out of the portal. A look of relief had been plastered on her face, until she saw Rosalyn and Miss Summers at the gargoyle. Even though the password had been said, it wasn't going to move if she wasn't in there.

"Let you help with what?" Regina asked as she stepped next to them. Her eyes looked from the Gryffindor to the professor. Their composure, especially that of the teenage girl, told her that this wasn't a casual visit.

...Why wasn't the gargoyle moving?

It took a moment for Rosalyn to register that the Headmistress had to be elsewhere. This could be VERY problematic, but still she glanced around to see if the woman would show at any moment. "I'm sure that she will, Miss Summers. In a capacity that doesn't put any of you in danger." As in they weren't stepping foot in the portal.

At that moment the woman they were waiting for arrived, and Rosalyn gave a huge sigh of relief.

"It's Carlton Lewis! I was talking to him in the pathways when suddenly everything went weird. There was a flash of light and before I could grab hold of him, he was gone. It must have been a portal. Miss Summers saw everything as well." Which was part of why she was here, the other part was for safety; there was no way she was risking another student being grabbed without doing something to stop it.

"I'm not sure if anyone else has been taken, but it's possible given the fact that it appeared randomly and vanished. This must have been what happened at the bridge..." Unfortunately no one had witnessed that incident.

Noelle ran a hand through her hair as she waited for the gargoyle to move, shift, shake.... whatever it was supposed to do.... but it wasn't doing anything. She shifted in front of it, willing it to move with her eyes.

Nothing.

Looking at the professor, she opened her mouth to say that perhaps they didn't have the right password, only, the headmistress was behind them. Noelle nodded her head at the headmistress and moved aside to let her say the password and thank Merlin that statue moved.

Noelle didn't have to say a word though as Professor Newton began telling the story. Exactly how Noelle would have told it. So Noelle nodded with everything that she had said. Now what?? Could they go get their precious pea?

Had the professor's urgent words not grasped her attention, the headmistress would have wondered why the female Gryffindor prefect had suddenly gone quiet. But, for the moment, the woman had temporarily forgotten that the prefect was here. Rosalyn's account about Carlton Lewis's disappearance made her uneasy. There was a bright flash and he was gone? Must have been a portal? Must have been what had happened over a month ago at the wooden bridge? Not sure if anyone else was taken? Eyes wide, a million thoughts were going through her mind.

After taking a moment to breathe and collect herself, Regina's eyes gazed over to Noelle. "Miss Summers, please report to Gryffindor Tower immediately. If you see any of your housemates along the way, take them with you. Help your Head of House make sure everyone is present and accounted for. No one is to be out in the corridors until told otherwise."

Her head then turned to the History of Magic professor. "Rosalyn, gather the others and tell them to help make sure students are going to their common rooms for roll call. We need make sure if just Carlton is gone or if there are others before we take our next move. We will meet near the portal in precisely one hour to discuss our options."

The woman then took out her wand from her holster and placed it gently at her throat. Soon her voice blasted through the school loudspeakers and flooded every nook and cranny of the castle as she quickly made her way back up to the sixth floor. "All students are to report to their common rooms immediately. Under no circumstances are you go anywhere but your houses. Students that are caught lollygagging will face severe consequences."

It was bad enough that they were going to be escorted everywhere by a professor or prefect and that the curfew would be changed from 9 PM to 6 PM if Carlton Lewis, and others if more had disappeared, didn't show up soon. Or worse: the school would be closed.

Noelle's mouth flung open when the Headmistress told her to report back to her common room. No! She had to do something! Not go and hide away!! "But Headmistress.. I can be of help! I can help!" She wasn't going to go lightly.

The headmistress was then announcing to the whole school that they were to stay out of the corridors and that curfew had changed. ..... Noelle frowned. They couldn't hide. People could help. Not just the professors. "Headmistress..." She started again. "We can send a muggle video tape in.. see what we are dealing with. Attach it to a rope." Noelle had ideas. She wanted to help.

Carlton...
Precious Pea....

The headmistress was halfway down the corridor when she heard the Gryffindor speak. A stern look was on her face as she turned on her heel and took two steps back toward her and the History of Magic professor. Did a prefect just blatantly disobey her?

"Excuse me, Miss Summers?" Regina asked flatly. She crossed her arms and stared down at the girl. "I believe my instructions to you were very clear. 10 points will be taken from Gryffindor. I understand that you are worried and want to help, but this is not the time to be disregarding the very simple orders that are given to you. For your own safety and the safety of your housemates, you need to report to your common room now."

Her face turned toward Rosalyn and then back at the young girl standing next to her. "You can either return on your own accord and make sure every Gryffindor is present or Professor Newton will be escorting you there and making sure you stay put until your Head of House arrives. Those are your only options, so choose wisely." The woman knew another female Gryffindor that was just as worthy of pinning that badge onto her robes if she heard that the prefect continued to be problematic.

Without saying another word, Regina hurried down the corridor and up the stairs. What a great first term at Hogwarts this was turning out to be...

Rooney Bronwyn did not have TIME to wait for the gargoyle to do it's thing or to wait for Headmistress Hawthorne, so he stuck a dozen of his notes over the gargoyle and shouted around the hallway hoping that she would be in the vicinity and hear before he was gone himself. He knew he was only a floor away from Professor Hirsch and that man had been an absolute darling since everything had happened. Which meant that Rooney felt safest with him and was going to go there and hide in a corner.

"HEADMISSSSSSSTRESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS. THE PORTAL IS DOING THINGS. HEADMISTRESS!!!!!!!!!!!!! MY CAT THOUGHT SOMETHING BAD WAS GOING TO HAPPEN AND RAN AWAY. HEADMISTRESSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Yeah. That was enough shouting. If she heard, then she heard. If she didn't, then she was going to be in for a shock when someone else got in touch with her.

Man, why hadn't Rooney learned how to send patronuses with a message yet?!

ANYWAYS. TWELVE NOTES AND A SHOUT later, Rooney Bronwyn was off on his travels to the first floor.

The headmistress was returning to her office from a classroom in the upper floors, right after debriefing with the professor about the lesson. As she clicked and clacked down the stairs and was steadily walking down the second floor corridor, she couldn't help but think about the progression of the lesson and glance down at her observation notes. Overall, she was quite impressed.

However, she was not impressed with the sight she returned to. The woman stopped dead in her tracks, standing in the middle of the corridor, when she noticed that her gargoyle was covered in notes. Whichever Dorcus did that was in serious trouble...

The woman snatched one of the notes and read in rather rapidly. At first she was quite upset by the sight, but then her mood did a complete one-eighty. This was not a student prank; it was an alert. The subject matter of the note written by Mister Bronwyn made her eyes grow wide.

Curse words were muttered under her breath when a silvery kangaroo, belonging to the Transfiguration professor, suddenly appeared before her and spoke of the horror that had found its way into the castle. The note flew to the ground, the woman already making a run for the stairs.

As she ran, she pointed her wand to her throat and her voice, sounding more tense than normal, boomed out of the loudspeakers throughout the castle. "A dangerous creature has just emerged from the portal. Students, for your safety, please return to your common rooms immediately. Older students, escort younger students as you come across them and keep each other safe. All staff members are to team up and search the castle. This is not a drill. Stay vigilant."
