Welcome to your first duel!

This is a key stepping stone into determining your placement in the Jinx Tournament so please take this seriously. A list of spells to use can be found HERE while the cost of physical actions can be found below.

Please note that these actions take away from the Fatigue Points section. Also note that these are only taken into account if you're attacking or avoiding a spell. If you're simply moving around the hall, these points don't need to be considered.

OOC: This duel must be completed by the 19th of February by 11:59pm GMT. You're required to make a minimum of 3 posts each in that time.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate in contacting me about them or posting them in the Dueling Club Rules thread. If you don't think you can post during that time or you don't think you can start/finish your duel, please let me know as soon as possible and we'll try and work something out.

Remember to keep a track of your points both in the title of your post (before any spells have been cast) and at the end of the post (after your charrie has cast a spell). Please refer to this post if you're confused as to how this works or, simply, come to me. Include as much information as you can about the spell in the spoiler section at the bottom of your post, including the directionality of the spell.

Also remember to be as realistic as possible with your charrie's age and ability.

First person mentioned in the thread title is the first person to start off the duel.

Okay. This was it. Today was the day.

The DAY.

THE. DAY.

Abey had been so very excited for this day to come, counting down the weeks, days, hours, minutes until he finally got to duel in Duelling Club, as though it was his birthday or something (it wasn't his actual birthday though actually, that wasn't until April). He'd been practicing his spells specially and, the night before, when he was trying to settle down enough to sleep, had gone through as many possible duelling techniques as he could think of, or that he could remember from paying attention to what others showed or told him. He was READY.

....... Maybe actually. Because... there were stands; he had forgotten about that. And people were probably watching, but at least Abey couldn't be distracted by them or anything, thanks to the measures taken by Hirsch.

Before the duel had started, Abey had stayed back, bouncing on his toes and shaking out his arms because of all the nervous energy, and trying to stop feeling so sick. He had been looking FORWARD to this after all, but then everything he looked forward to also made him so scared and anxious that his chest started to feel funny and his tummy started to do flips. But now it was time, which was good, because waiting around made it worse, but DOING THE THING would make it better, because then the thing would be done. Waiting was the most awfullest thing ever actually.

Abey held his wand in his left hand, considering things, then swapped it across to his right, to test if that felt better today. After a moment, he swapped it back to his left hand, and gave a nod. Now he was ready.

With bundles of that Gryffindor energy (or first year energy) ((or both)) Abey bounded forward into the duelling arena, with a smile in the direction of Professor Hirsch, and then across at his opponent, Carlton. Then he BOWED, because, you know, that was duelling etiquette actually, and now it was clear that it was TIIIIIIIIIME.

Okay, so even though Abey knew that it was PROBABLY smartest to start off small and see what his duelling opponent was capable of, he was actually also a Gryffindor (but would never admit it) so he was going ALL IN STRAIGHT AWAY AND TAKING RISKS AND YEAHHHHHHH!

"Periculum!" Abey cast HOPEFULLY all of a sudden so that it was a surprise or something, and then, once he had sent a load of red sparks Carlton's way, he quickly followed it up with. "Tarantallegra!" Hopefully hopefully hopefully the sparks had been enough of a distraction - even if they hadn't hit their target - that his second spell had been all sneaky sneaky and sneaked it's way in.

And then. AND THEN - and this one was a bit of a gamble actually, because sometimes this spell worked for Abey and sometimes it didn't and sometimes he just didn't KNOW because it was hard to find someone willing to practice it with him in their free time - AND THENNNNN he tried his luck at a Trip Jinx, because THREE was a magic number, so three spells was how he wanted to start. He bounced around, prepared for a counterattack. SO PREPARED.

Carlton was extremely nervous. He hadn't slept for 3 nights and when he had got some sleep it was nightmares of being hit with a spell that forced him to throw up slugs.

Yeah! That was a spell that actually existed! Shudder.

He was slowly starting to regret his decision to join the Dueling Club. Like, he needed to get better at DADA, obviously, but was it really necessary to volunteer for someone else to throw spells at him? The rules for the club clearly stated 'Don't die' as a final rule. Okidoks. He would do his best not to die.

Carlton offered up a smile to ~~the kid who could kill him~~ Abey and was thankful they weren't going to shake hands because Carlton had all of the handsweat. All of it. They just did a little bow. Right. Wizarding etiquette.

"Yes. Namaste." He murmured as he bowed, eyes trailing up to the stands. He hoped his friends were there, he should have gone up there to talk to them beforehand but it had slipped his mind.

Truth be told, he was really only doing this so that 1. ~~Han Solo~~ professor Hirsch didn't think he was a complete failure, 2. That he one day could be as skilled with spells as Roo and 3. Because... Well. Because magic was fun! Unless it killed him. That wouldn't be fun. He was so lucky ~~Han Solo~~ professor Hirsch was there to make sure that didn't happen.

Carlton's attention was quickly back on his opponent when red sparks were EVERYWHERE. Carlton flailed his arms to swat them away, shutting his eyes tightly. "No." He protested. Sparks in the face! GAAAAH! Carlton hated it, he hated it, he hated it! FLAIL.

HOLY COW. WHAT IN THE WORLD?!

Carlton quickly stepped to the side when Abey shouted another spell, avoiding it just barely. Excuse you, excuse you, hi, could you stop this madness?! Apparently not, another spell was cast that hit him straight on. A trip jinx! Suddenly his feet were pulled out from underneath him and he fell over with a loud THUD. SO, with his face down on the floor and his nose aching from the impact, he actually thought about leaving. He could just give up, go get ice cream and watch the other duels from the stands with the others. Why would he not leave? He was being ATTACKED! MANHANDLED! ABUSED!

Then he remembered he could fight back. Right. Carlton jumped up on his feet and took a steadier grip on his wand. His nose was hurting from the fall but at least he was up on his feet again. Okidoks, here it goes.

Carlton's plan had been to cast a bubble producing charm to distract Abey but he'd completely forgotten about tactic now. What had his friends said? 'Stick to the plan and everything will be fine.' Carlton was not sticking to the plan.

"Locomotor Mortis!" OK brain, you chose that spell. Well then. Carlton didn't have the time to reflect whether it was a good choice or not before he cast a jelly-fingers-curse. Maybe Abey's fingers would be so jelly-like that he couldn't grip his wand and they could just call it a day. Confetti, woooh.

... Woo.

Abey was bouncing. Bouncing on his toes and sort of flailing his arms in his total excitement because wow actually people had mentioned the adrenaline of duelling but nobody had QUITE mentioned just what a THRILL it was actually. All of his nervous energy was still nyooming through his body but now they were getting started Abey was so HYPED.

....... Okay, but the way that that Carlton kid had hit the floor like that made Abey feel a little bad, actually. Or a lot bad. It was all very well and good wanting to win, but actually maybe there was a way he could do that without hurting people. Maybe? Hopefully. Actually.

He wanted to blurt out a 'sorry!' and maybe had sort of opened his mouth to do so right as Carlton was getting to his feet, but then there was a spell coming RIGHT HIS WAY, and the LEG-LOCKER CURSE, no less. Nightmare. So, instead of apologising but only because he was sidetracked actually, Abey let out a yell of alarm and very dramatically took a dive to the floor to get out of the way.

Except that diving was a stupid idea because with all the ACTION Abey couldn't really do much to defend himself from the next spell. In fact, he didn't even realise that another spell had come his way until he sprung BACK up to his feet......... and left his wand on the floor. Uh.

... Okay. Picking UP the wand, Abey held it up and opened his mouth ready to cast again........ and dropped it. And then again, when he made a second attempt at picking it back up. Suddenly realising what must have happened, Abey tried with his other hand to pick up his wand - because he could use his right hand too, though not as naturally as his left - but found his fingers just as jelly-like on that side.

There wasn't TIME to faff about trying to pick up his wand, though. This was a DUEL. And PANICKING was about to happen because Abey's fingers may as well have been SLEEPING and he NEEDED THOSE.

In his desperation, and moving as quickly as possible in case another spell could come his way, Abey lowered himself to one knee to get to the ground and just about managed to scoop up his wand with both hands, pinning it between his palms, before using his RIGHT palm to forcibly move the fingers on his left hand so that they were gripping his wand properly. So... okay, he would just... continue like this. Two-handed hold. This was fine. This was fiiiiiiine. This was... not fine probably actually not really.

But, okay, listen. Abey couldn't wait until he learned all the counterspells and shield spells, because that would make this soooooo much easier.

AH-HA! He was back on his feet again, and holding his wand in that peculiar way of his which was really just weird actually.

Abey didn't have time to do anything particularly special or fancy for his next move; he was focused only on sending SOME kind of magic back and, because he was sort of actually at a bit of a disadvantage now, he said the first spell that came to mind that might be something of a disadvantage for Carlton too, at least for a moment so that Abey could get a little more used to these jelly fingers and maybe think of a spell that didn't have too much of a complicated wand movement.

"Steleus!"

He was desperate to try and cast a second spell too, one that had just flown into his head, but that one had been tricky enough with his jelly finger predicament actually and it was already fully getting in the way actually.

Carlton watched Abey struggle with the jelly-fingers. He shifted his weight slightly. He kind of didn't want to continue until his opponent had a wand in his hand. Was he supposed to do another spell now before Abey got a hold of his wand again? But that would defeat the purpose of the jelly-finger jinx... Waiting was the more civil thing to do, but was he supposed to be civil in a duel? He glanced over at the stands, hesitating. Liv? Roo? Halp.

He obviously waited too long to make up his mind as Abey had gotten a hold of the wand and fired off another spell in Carlton's direction. Which he again, didn't avoid. Stopid. Carlton took a step back when the jinx hit him but then beamed after a second. Nothing happened! Well, then! Goody- now....

........

Carlton's nose that was slightly throbbing from his fall earlier now felt all tingly. Wait... Had Abey said Steleus? Wasn't that...? Oh no.

"ACHOO!" WAAAH! Carlton rubbed his nose. He couldn't sneeze and duel at the same time! He had to think of another spell, it would probably be a- a- a- "ACHOO!"

BUT WHY?!

He needed time to sneeze so he sent purple fire crackers in the general direction Abey was. Carlton couldn't be exactly sure where he was aiming due to the NEVER ENDING sneezing!

"ACHOO!" Again with the sneezes! Carlton gripped his wand. "Colloshoo!" Probably the only spell he could do after being hit with Steleus since it rhymed so well with 'achoo'. Or it could be because it was the first spell that he could think of.

Jelly fingers were annoying, okay? Like really actually very annoying to the extent that Abey was having such trouble keeping hold of his wand without feeling like he'd drop it again that there was maybe a couple of tears of frustration threatening to appear. Or maybe they were from sadness because he wanted to win but knew he'd be stuck with this for the rest of the duel because he hadn't learnt how to undo spells yet.

But... he did know what the spell was... so, maybe, what if, maybe he sort of somehow tried? But then how would he point his wand at his own hands when actually he needed BOTH hands to hold ont-

"AGHHHHHHHHH!"

Abey had waited a little too long to act, and had sort of forgotten to pay any attention to Carlton, believing he had a few moments to deal with his predicament. (And actually, he had been correct, but had totally lost track of time what with his FRUSTRATION and all actually.)

The fire crackers (PURPLE, by the way, Abey had time to notice that because he looooooooved purple) had taken him more by surprise than anything else, because suddenly they were RIGHT THERE FLYING AT HIM. Abey stumbled backwards and brought up his hands to protect his face and eyes even though he knew that there was no way he could get seriously hurt. The stumbling backwards brought him right to the ground, on account of tripping over his feet and falling backwards... and dropping his wand AGAIN in the process.

DISASTER.

Abey was disoriented more than anything else. Okay, his backside sort of hurt a little from the fall but of all the things to take the force of the impact, he was glad it was the most cushioned part of his body actually. Carlton had fallen on his face earlier, which was something Abey was keen to avoid.

........ Uh oh. Carlton. Abey could hear him sneezing, but that didn't necessarily mean he was incapacitated. He took a second to get his bearings, before looking up at the boy who was still standing, just in time to see a wand pointed at him and to hear the incantation of a spell that Abey did not want to hit him oh no oh no oh no.

Naturally, Abey did the only thing he made sense.

"AAGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"

He screamed. Again. BUT THEN he also did something more useful and ROLLED TO THE SIDE OUT OF THE WAY. Still screaming. By the way.

But then he stopped screaming, because he had found himself having rolled towards where his wand had fallen. Abey felt the relief flood him as he scrambled/army-crawled towards it and picked it up as quickly as he possibly could (given the whole wobbly finger scenario).

Still lying on the floor, on his belly, Abey held up his wand (STILL in both hands and boy oh boy did he suuuuuuuure hate having jellified fingers) and sent green sparks back at Carlton, because it was the first non-complicated spell he could think of and ALSO he wanted to make green to counteract the purple. Complimenting colours were important, EVEN in a duel, okay?

But Abey didn't stop there, because the sparks had only really been to serve as a distraction again. Once he had done that, he summoned all the magical willpower that he possibly could, and followed up the sparks immediately with a set of bluebell flames, right in the direction of his opponent.

Also, being on the floor was not very helpful when it came to duelling actually, so as soon as he had cast his spells, Abey pushed himself back to his feet, panting heavily because of all that excitement and moving around AND magicking. Abey was more a 'short bursts of energy' kind of person after all actually, and now he was tired. And thirsty, actually. BUT DUELLING. But thirsty.

OK.

Carlton didn't know you could duel from the ground. He hadn't actually thought that was a possibility. He had never dueled before, he hadn't even seen a duel before so the green sparks that Abey cast from the floor (how cool was that?!) caught him off guard.

Again with the distractions!

He swatted at the sparks but that didn't make them disappear. Knowing now, that Abey used the sparks as a distraction he was at least a little prepared that it would come a second spell towards him. He could make out something blue in the distance and he got terrified.

TERRIFIED.

Nothing could prepare him for that spell! NOTHING. Flames shot towards him and he did the only thing he could think of; protect his head. He immediately ducked, throwing his arms above his head to protect it from the flames. In the process, he dropped his wand and it rolled away from him.

NO! COME BACK, COME BACK, COME BACK!

After a few moments, Carlton opened one eye to peek around him and noticed with a relief the flames had swirled right on past. He did NOT want to be a human torch. No thank you, NOPE.

GOOD BYE.

The fear of ACTUALLY, YOU KNOW, BEING ON FIRE, he scrambled after his wand, picked it up and aimed it at Abey. Eh, spell. Right... "Bulla!" Wait no. Bubbles came shooting out of his wand and he frowned. That wasn't nearly as terrifying as the flames that Abey shot. He needed another spell.

"Diminuendo!" Because stop this nonsense RIGHT now!

Be small, Abey. Actually, be tiny. So Carlton can pick you up, hand over to ~~Han Solo~~ Professor Hirsch and join his friends on the stands to catch the other duels.

Actually, it wasn't until Carlton dropped his wand that Abey was suddenly struck by a VERY LATE brainwave. All this time, he had been struggling with holding his wand (and he STILL was, thank you very much actually; this didn't get any easier and his arms were starting to get tired from all the work they were putting into it) and had neglected to REALISE that actually he knew how to do that very same spell, and could put Carlton at exactly the same disadvantage. Here he had been, considering trying his luck at a full body bind (but that was silly really because it would probably take every ounce of his mental and magical energy when at his FULLEST potential and he was running very low on both right now actually, so it wasn't even possible) when the answer had been staring him in the face all this time. Or... more like the answer was on the ends of his wrists, but still. SAME THING.

Still catching his breath from his last display of... well... of whatever that was, Abey did his best to readjust his grip on his wand while he had the time, heart going BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM as he watched Carlton raise his own wand once again.

He was ready, ready to stop, drop, and/or roll, or dive or jump or soMETHING, but when the incantation rang out, and Abey recognised it... well, he was maybe a bit too surprised to even try to dodge the spell. He had expected BIG DANGER to retaliate against a FIRE ASSAULT but was met with bubbles. PRETTY bubbles, though, and kind of iridescent (Abey knew that word because he knew a lot about pretty colours and that was the best way to describe those bubbles).

A mixture of being surprised, somewhat taken by the bubbles and of deliberately stopping himself from jumping out of the way of a not-too-harmful spell meant that Abey stayed exactly in the path of the bubbles, which meant he got a lovely faceful of them.

"Pppfpfffpuh!" He spluttered, because they got all up in his mouth and nose and actually we a bit more of a hindrance than he expected them to be. They weren't as pretty when they were getting in your actual eyes. Actually, they sort of stung a bit. Not letting go of his wand with either hand, Abey bat his hands at the bubbles still attacking his face, and almost got a noseful of wand for his troubles.

That COULDN'T have been the only spell though, right?

Of course, no sooner had Abey thought that than Carlton was casting his next spell.

Uhhhhh... that definitely sounded like one to avoid. Yes. Quick as he could, Abey side-stepped out of the way once more, giving another dramatic little SPIN as he did so. Just... because Abey actually.

Quick quick quick! No time for waiting or slowing down, this was a DUEL. With his plan still firmly in mind, Abey raised his wand and - with some difficulty because fingers - cast a Jelly-Fingers Curse at Carlton. Finally, REVENGE.

Merlin. He was tired. And this was difficult. And he was tired. Lowering his wand again, Abey staggered a little bit to the side in his exhaustion. Time out? Take a break? Take five? Ten? A million? No? ... Well, okay.

If there was an award for the most dramatic duel, this one would take the lead.

And, in fact, it amused Hirsch the most.

Two first years duelling meant that you couldn't expect the most extravagant of spells to be used. They weren't going to stand there and produce complicated spells at the twirl of a wand that ended up affecting the environment as well, that's what show duels were for. But they did have a lot of energy about them and the man admired that very much.

They also seemed to have a bit of a flare for sparks and firecrackers, didn't they? Huh.

It wasn't long before the duel had to come to a close which, Hirsch felt, was a pity. He'd been getting so into the duel itself, enjoying every military move and spark that flew out between the two boys. But right now, the man struck up a shield between the two boys, saving Carlton from being hit with a dose of Mr Botros's revenge. You're welcome.

"Excellent! Really, really excellent!" he said, emerging from the shadows. There was a wide grin on his face, one that only came from seeing a great duel take place or from students progressing ~~or from a tattoo turning out better than he expected~~. He flicked his wand to cast the counter-curse for any effects of spells that were still present. "I'm very proud of both of you. That was a tremendous effort, especially considering that this is your first set of duels." Really. "There can only be one winner so congratulations, Mr Botros. And a very well done, Mr Lewis."
