It's a warm sunny morning at the end of April... not that anyone would know it by walking into the charms classroom. The windows are closed and the shades drawn. Today the desks are arranged in four neat rows in the middle of the room, and as always, the table at the back of the room is stocked with refreshments, today's offerings: cream puffs and fruit punch.
As you walk in, you'll find Professor Marchand sitting behind his desk, writing something in a little black book. If you look closely, you might notice he looks a little more disheveled than usual, and there are dark circles under his eyes. Probably best to be extra kind to him today!
OOC: Hiiiii, everybody! Sorry this is a couple of hours late; I had a really busy day yesterday! Anyway, class will be starting in about 24 HOURS. CLASS HAS STARTED!

Sometimes Brooklyn enjoyed the sun, other times not so much. Mostly just because of being a natural redhead, therefore she had to be careful when she was in the sun. Either way, and maybe not even because of that, she didn’t particularly mind how dim the Charms classroom was when she’d arrived for the next lesson. Her eyes were fairly accustomed to the lighting, and even if they weren’t, she was fairly certain there was t least one spell she could use to adjust to it. She’d walked into the room as if it wasn’t half-dark and rather stuffy with no fresh air coming in from outside. At least it wasn’t damp.
“Good morning, Professor Marchand,” she’d said politely, choosing not to comment on his appearance as she’d let her gaze pass him on her way to choosing a seat. That and investigating to see if the snacks were worth her time. She selected a single cream puff before settling into her chosen seat, delicately nibbling at it as she waited to see if anyone worth her notice was going to choose to show up to the lesson.

Kaycee was a pretty big fan of snack time. She made it a point to attend lessons that offered them. It didn't really matter that there was the Great Hall and there was also the kitchens, she'd eat at any given opportunity.
She entered the classroom honestly a little disappointed by how sad the classroom was. Why was it so dark? It was so sunshiney outside. Eep. Professor face looked a little worse for wear too. Nevertheless, she did greet him brightly. She then helped herself to some snacks and then a seat.

One thing is for sure: It's great to be back in Charms class. Jace felt really guilty about last time since he had to skip a few of Professor Marchand's lessons because of his head injury. The Healer somehow insisted that he take things easy if he wanted to get back to Kendo training. That didn't sit well with him initially because he didn't like missing lessons, but if it meant missing his Kendo grading entirely by the start of summer then by all means, he'd stay in the Hospital Wing until the Healer gives him the go signal.
Still a bit sad that classes aren't held outdoors, Jace quietly strode inside the classroom and immediately spotted the professor. Even from afar he looked...miserable. He could see the dark circles under his eyes from where he stood. Without a moment's hesitation, the Ravenclaw took the liberty to get the professor a glass of fruit punch and three pieces of cream puffs, and carefully approached him. "Sensei?" he called him out as Jace placed the food on his desk. "You look like you could use some...food." Did he want company? Because Jace was more than willing to chat him up until it was time for class. The Ravenclaw was simply returning the favour.

CREAM PUFFS AND FRUIT PUNCH! That was all Juno could think about when she walked into the Charms classroom. Food always caught her attention. Because, food. But before she made her way to the table of deliciousness, Juno gave a small smile to the very disheveled looking professor, "Morning, Professor!" She said it in a way hoping to not disturb, and then walked over to the food.
She got a plate full of cream puffs and a cup full of fruit punch and then went to her desk. She made sure to make room for all the supplies she would need for class, then stuffed a cream puff in her mouth. Boy, were they good!

Stepping into the room Hadleigh took notice to the instant lack of sunlight. Why were the windows closed and shades drawn? Would they be working on another sunlight charm or something this morning to brighten things up? She sure hoped so because it was a beautiful day and having some sunshine and fresh air was always a major plus to her day.
"Good morning, Professor, hope you're doing well." Hady smiled warmly in his direction not mentioning that he looked very much like he could use a few more hours sleep. Hopefully the lesson would be smooth sailing and no one would anger him. Taking a peek at the table in the back had her eyes lightly up. Oh, yum! Wandering over quickly the teen selected a cream puff, napkin to set it on and a small cup of punch. Awesome way to start off a lesson!
With her selection in hand she slipped down into an empty seat placing her food items on the desk. Quietly and quickly taking out the things she would need and setting them on the corner of her desk before eating her pastry. This girl was content right now and ready to begin.

Azura walked into Charms class a bit more subdued than usual, there was so much on her mind. Her Mom, things with Jace, Chris has been so busy she had barely seen him lately.
She sighed softly as she saw the snacks and decided to pass them up.. the thought of food only made her stomach turn..
She instead turned to the Professor and her heart fell slightly as she saw how he looked.. He pretty much looked like how she felt.. She moved over to his desk, next to Jace and said in a quiet voice..
"Are you all right Professor? Can I help at all? "

Paige felt as though she had been hit with a wall of negative energy the moment she passed through the threshold of the Charms classroom - enough so that goosebumps uncomfortably tickled her skin. The feeling of dark uncertainty only intensified when her bright blue eyes fell on the professor himself, a man she had come to know over the term as being the complete manifestation of everything opposite to what he was projecting now. With several of her classmates asking and pointing out his broken appearance, the Hufflepuff bit her lip and opted to remain silent on the subject.
Instead, Paige uncharacteristically - and she still felt food and drink like this were a well intended but unnecessary and sticky distraction - made her way over to the provided refreshments and grabbed a cup of punch. With her wand out, Paige performed a self heating charm upon the cup to warm the liquid and keep it so which she then brought up and place on the professor's desk in front of him. Saying nothing, she simply smiled warmly at the man before making her way over to a seat in the front and set to getting her things set and organized on her desk for the eventual start of the lesson.

Jonas walked into the classroom. He noticed the professor a d noticed he had dark circles around his eyes. Well that sucks. "Mornin' professor. Hope your night wasn't too bad." Jonas said as he walked in and found a seat.

Gaston's head was bowed over the black book on the desk in front of him when a sudden voice startled him and made him look up. Ah, Miss Andrews. Ever the polite one... "Good morning, Miss Andrews," he replied, inclining his head toward the Slytherin. He was glad she hadn't drawn attention to his appearance.

The charms professor picked up his pen, but before he could turn his attention back to what he was writing, the Gryffindor prefect arrived. Well, she certainly seemed cheery... a refreshingly stark contrast to his own mood. "Hello, Miss Richards," he greeted the girl.

Okay, back to writing. The Frenchman had barely enough time to jot down a couple more lines before another voice jerked him out of his thoughts. He didn't even have to look up to know who it was; there was only one student who called him Sensei. Blue eyes blinked in shock as the Ravenclaw set a glass of punch and a plate of cream puffs down in front of him.
well, that certainly wasn't the way he'd expected the boy's sentence to end, but he wasn't wrong. For the past several days, Gaston had been avoiding the great hall; he'd asked the house elves to bring his meals to his office... either that or done without them. "Thank you, Mr. Reed," he said, managing to give the boy a small sad smile. He felt terrible for worrying his student... again! "Five points to Ravenclaw for your kindness." No matter how sad he was, Gaston Marchand never let an act of kindness go unacknowledged.

Another student appeared at the charms professor's desk, and he couldn't' help but notice that Miss Snow looked every bit as sad as he was. Had he caused that? He'd never forgive himself if he did! He wasn't sure how to answer the girl's question; it seemed wrong to lie to her when she'd been kind enough to ask after him but this wasn't the sort of thing professors discussed with their students. There was only one honest answer he could give.
"I will be," he said with a forced smile. No matter how many times he had his heart broken, he always bounced back... eventually. The Ravenclaw's offer to help touched his heart and threatened his already tenuous hold on his emotions. It was his job to be concerned for her, not the other way around! "That's very sweet of you, Miss Snow, but I'm afraid there's nothing you can do." There was only one person who could... "Another five points to Ravenclaw."

Another glass of punch appeared on the desk in front of him, and Gaston's brilliant blue eyes glanced up... straight into those of Miss Skeeter. He should've guessed; he'd expect nothing less from her! She didn't speak, just offered him a smile, which he returned with a subdued on e of his own. "Thank you, Miss Skeeter," he said. "Five points to Hufflepuff."

Gaston decided getting any more writing done now was a lost cause and closed the little black book on his desk, just as Mr. Emery walked into the room. You have no idea... he inwardly scoffed at the boy's words. Last night was just the latest in an ever growing string of horrible nights, but he was too polite to point that out. Instead he nodded toward his student and replied, "Good morning to you too, Mr. Emery."
The charms professor looked at his watch. Was it time for class already? No, it was past time to start class. He'd been so distracted by his own sadness that he completely lost track of time! Normally he was eager to share his knowledge with his students, but today the thought just brought a sense of overwhelming dread. He pretended to drop his pen and bent to pick it up so nobody could see him press a hand to his eyes.
Oh for Merlin's sake, get it together, Gaston! he silently berated himself. Your students need you to help them learn, but they'll never be able to if they're too distracted worrying about you! You cannot fall apart in front of them!
He took a few deep breaths to calm himself down as he placed his black book in the top drawer of his desk and locked it with a spell... just in case anybody got any ideas about trying to read it. He pointed his wand at the door, but his heightened emotions affected the spell and the door slammed much harder than he'd intended, making a resounding BANG! Sorry, everybody!
Another quick flick of the charms professor's wand, and the window shades flew up about halfway. He hoped that would be enough lighting for the students to be able to do their assignment; he really wasn't in a sunshine-y mood right now! He peered out at the class as he stood beside his desk. "Who can name a witch or wizard known for inventing a charm?" he asked his students. "Please name both the inventor and the spell itself."
OOC: CLASS HAS STARTED! Late arrivals after this point will lose house points; just pretend like your charrie's been here the whole time. We'll move on again in 20-24 HOURS.

Well, it looks like he didn’t like company for now given Professor Marchand’s response. He thought it was best to leave him alone, otherwise he would have asked him to stay and chat away. Jace was taken aback by the five points; he thought it was unnecessary. Kindness was something that he was willing to give without a reward. The Ravenclaw didn’t care about the additional sapphire points to be honest...he cared more about his teacher.
Jace suppressed a sigh, and instead, gave the man a polite bow and took a seat in front of him. The sound of the banging door gave him a slight jolt and brown eyes slowly looked up to the man. The additional lighting in the room showed just how awful he looked.
The Ravenclaw bit his lip and quietly procured his parchment and quill and raised his hand the moment the professor asked the first question. “The Cheering Charm, sensei. It was invented by Felix Summerbee in the 15th Century.” To be honest, Professor Marchand could use that spell.

Miranda thought long and hard before putting her hand up into the air, poised to answer. " Professor Marchand... How about Daisy Pennifold?... She was the witch who discovered the speed slowing charm.... Arresto Momentum.."
Pleased with herself as usual for being able to recall what she'd read on her own.. It was something she always prided herself on.. Her willingness to learn.

The brunette female snake was caught off guard by two things this morning. The first being the very slight shake of her professors head in response to her greeting. A tiny frown formed on her lips and she silently hoped he wasn't ill or experiencing an problems that would make him unwell. The second was the force with which the classroom door had shut making her flinch in the process. It just wasn't right, very off as a matter of fact.
The lesson was now starting and Hady listened for a moment as the first question was asked. This was a pretty easy one, one she could answer without much fuss. Lifting her hand into the air and waiting to be called upon she gave her answer. "Delfina Crimp invented the Severing Charm in the 15th Century." There was more to this answer she could have given up but that hadn't been part of the question so for now Hady was simply going to stick to the basics.

Paige was torn how to feel being rewarded for simply offering the man the kind gesture of a warm beverage, but smiled nonetheless as she settled properly into her seat while naming and dating her parchment. She just wished the overall aura of the classroom would cease feeling so...heavy...
"The Mending Charm, also known as the Repairing Charm, was invented by Orabella Nuttley in 1754," Paige offered in response. "The story behind its integration into standard spell practice is quite fascinating." For anyone to wished to flip through their textbook to find it.

Raising her hand, the second year waited her turn and then offered, "Blagdon Blay, Professor! He created the anti-alohomora charm after his home was broken into a bunch. Can't imagine he'd have much left after that many burglaries, but it probably helped lots of others."

Charms and their inventor?? What was this .... history of magic?? Skylar had to peek at the professor again to make sure she was in the correct place before she resigned to trying to think of a spell she knew the inventor of. Cheering charm but that was already mentioned and her roomie mentioned one that Sky never even heard of; Sky made a mental note to ask Junia later about that one.
Raising her hand, Sky then suggested, "Cushioning Charm in 1820 by Elliot Smethwyck." Because quidditch related so duh, of course she would know that one and Sky had to admit that she surprised it hadn't been mentioned but was same time grateful because she wasn't sure she knew any others....

Azura was rather shocked when she found out she had gotten points, to be honest the girl had never gotten points at all in class. A fact which only proved to the Ravenclaw that she didn't belong in the smart house.. seeing as her housemates were gaining points left and right and she was not..
But to gain points for being concerned about a Profrssor? Azura almost wanted to cry. She smiled warmly at him and said softly. "I hope you feel better. " She wanted to hug him but refrained and instead slid into a seat next to Jace.
She kept her gaze on the Professor and raised her had at his question.
"Jarleth Hobart invented the Levitation Charm in 1544. " She said with a soft smile.
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
The slamming of the door had startled Mason so much, he literally jumped in his seat and dropped the library book he was so focused in reading before class on the floor.
"WHO slammed that door?! Seriously i cant even read peacefu----" spotting the Professor at the front, he immediately knew it hadn't been one of his classmates and he awkwardly scratched the back of his neck. Clearing his throat, the Ravenclaw grabbed his book and placed it on his desk. Ignore him please.

Katerina settled into her seat and got ready for the lesson. Inventors? At firs t she could have sworn this was a history of magic lesson. It could have easily been a history lesson. A history lesson on charm inventors.
Kat was a history nerd, yes again, something else she got from her mother, She listened and wrote down a few notes along the way. After she caught up with that she raised her hand. "Mnemone Radford, she invented memory modifying charms." Smiling with a nod after she answered and went back in adding somethings to her notes.

Was anyone else completely hesitant with a professor that was an expert at charms messing up a charm or not seeming incredibly focused for a lesson that he was teaching the class of students a charm? Nat was glad she was in the back and she breathed through the thought of her anxiety rising with every movement of the professor. She pulled out her rolling clay and started to fidget with it in her hands. This helped to calm her when in class.

When he did finally ask the first question she though about different wizards. She was good at history things, but the more she thought about wizards and witches it seemed others had said the ones she could think of off hand. So instead of answering she just wrote notes about the ones that were being said. Daisy something...Someone named Horton, yep she was getting them.

Gaston inclined his head toward Mr. Reed as he bowed to him and watched him take a seat. He felt horrible for worrying the boy, but he just wasn't good at hiding his emotions... as he was sure all of Hogwarts knew by now. The irony of the young Ravenclaw's answer wasn't lost on him, and he managed a small smile. "Yes, very good, Mr. Reed," he said. "a very pertinent example."
He cast a knowing sidelong glace at the boy. It wasn't as if he hadn't tried it... He'd used a Cheering Charm on himself once at his last teaching job, and let's jsut say it didn't end well.

Gaston blinked as Miss Blaze spoke up. He didn't recall saying hello to her when she came in. Was he really so distracted by his broken heart that he'd missed her? He nodded at her answer. "Excellent example, Miss Blaze. The world would certainly be a much more dangerous place without that spell." The incident in the kitchens earlier this term had reminded the charms professor of that!

Not only had he completely ignored this kid but he'd also startled him. Now he felt even worse than ever! "I-I'm sorry I disturbed you, Mr. Winslow," he said, bowing his head so the Ravenclaw wouldn't see the wounded look in his eyes. "but yes, you're right. Levina Monkstanley did invent the wand lightning spell." That was one spell Gaston could do without, but that was beside the point...

This made - what was it now? - five students Gaston had failed to greet upon arrival. It was absolutely inexcusable, no matter what his emotional state! He couldn't even bring himself to meet Miss Delgado's eyes as she answered. "Excellent, Miss Delgado," he said, but he was surprised by how choked and subdued his voice sounded.

Gaston was lost in his sad thoughts when Miss Darcy's voice startled him. Well, that was an unexpected answer! "Quite right," he said with a small nod. "A very original example, Miss Darcy."
The charms professor decided it would be a good idea to move on after Miss Darcy's answer, lest he should be reminded of yet another student he'd ignored on the way in. He sighed, pinching at the inner corners of his eyes as he fought to regain composure. He couldn't lose control with all his students' eyes on him! He started to point his wand at the blackboard but decided against it. Writing things the muggle way would hide the devastated look on his face.
"Now I'm sure some of you are wondering why we're discussing famous inventors of spells in this class..." he said as he wrote the mentioned inventors' names and their spells on the board. A sudden horrible thought occurred to him. What if Rosalyn thought he was overstepping by asking a history question in his class? Oh Merlin, she had enough reason to be angry at him already! He tried to push the thought out of his mind; now wasn't the time to worry about that!
"The reason is that today's lesson is on charms development," he continued, writing the class's subject on the board in big letters. "Later on, all of you will join the ranks of these fine people and create your own spells, but firs imagine for just a minute what our lives might be like if these spells had never existed. No Horton Keitch Breaking charm for our brooms... no Mending or Severing charms to make life easier... no Cushioning or Speed Slowing charms to keep us safe..."
Gaston gave the class a few moments to reflect before going on. "So why do you think we invent new spells at all?" he asked, reluctantly turning to face his students. "Why not just use the ones we already have? I'd like your opinions; feel free to give outside-the-box answers."

They were going to create a charm? How totally cool was that?? Azura smiled warmly up at the Professor, trying to encourage him a bit. He seemed like he wasn't doing super well and now she was curious as to what was wrong. She had planned to stop by his office later anyways.
She tuned back to reflect on his question.. what would she do without some charms? Especially the cushioning charms?? Those had saved her life (and her nose) several times already!
At his next question though her hand went into the air. "I feel like spells were invented because we either needed them, they say necessity is the mother of invention, or they wanted to make something different. I don't think anyone needs a tickling charm, but we have one. And it's quite fun to use in duels. " She added with a smile
Miranda sat pleased with herself yet again as the professor accepted and praised her answer... But having listened further she learned that perhaps even she could at some point find a need and invent a new charm... Coolness!
As she listened on and thought about why it's an important thing that they would need to invent a new charm.... She didnt have to think for very long about the question at all really... Logic was staring them all in the face on this one...
" Professor, the need to invent or reinvent charms and spells is because times are forever changing as is our personal needs.. Not only to make life easier but also to make our spells more efficient and free of any unpleasant effects because of them.."

That was all Juno could think about when she walked into the Charms classroom. Food always caught her attention. Because, food. But before she made her way to the table of deliciousness, Juno gave a small smile to the very disheveled looking professor, "Morning, Professor!" She said it in a way hoping to not disturb, and then walked over to the food.
