Default Ancient Runes Lesson 2

As you enter the classroom you notice it looks the same as always normal and boring. On the blackboard it says Good Afternoon which has been there since a lesson in the beginning of the year.

Underneath the good afternoon you will see Runecasting written with a picture of Norns.

Quote:
Once you get to your seat each desk has a white cloth on it with brown bag. You can look in the bag if you want all you will find is a full set of runes.

You will find Sokolov standing and leaning against the board twirling a rune for Gebo in his hand waiting for everyone to arrive.

Now come in and leave the theatrics at the door. Gryffindors

OOC: Hey Everyone! I will be moving in around 24 hours or a little more considering tomorrow is Thanksgiving and all.

Viktor hoped they got it or at least attempted it because well it would be part of some of there final exams. He walked around the room peering at some desks to see how it was going. Not bad was his first reaction. Some had some problems but most seemed to get the concept at least.

Mmm..oh a question.

"It can be the simplest situation or the one that just pops into your mind. Any is worthy. Like will i pass my Arithmancy Exam next week. Simple and could work. As long as you focus on that or anything it should work"

And another question. He will liking it since they actually where good questions.

"Well Runecasting works more with the subconscious than Divination. The Runes are suppose to represent the entire universe. As one poses a question, one's entire conscious and unconscious mind should be focused toward that question, so that the runes selected are not truly random selections, but rather choices made by the subconscious. How accurate it is all depends on your belief in it." Probably just a bit more than she was asking. He said this all walking back to his desk. Okay onto Five Rune Layout. He flicked his wand at the board to make a diagram of what they will be doing.

"This is The Five Rune Layout. It is a little more advanced than the one we just did but i will like you all to try it even if you don't succeed in a full reading. You will be selecting five runes one at a time and lay them face down on the rune cloth. The three horizontal runes represent your past, present, and future. It is usually best to turn over the center rune first. This is the rune of the present and will show your problem as it is now. It can also show your state of mind. A negative rune in this position that does not seem to related or be relevant to your question can often show that you are distressed or not thinking clearly. The rune in position to left of the center relates to the past and will tell you what was in the past that caused you to be in your current position. Next read the rune laying above the center. This indicates the help that you can expect to receive in the problem at hand. If there is a negative rune here, it can indicate an unwillingness to accept the advice given by the runes or another person, or it can indicate delays or slight problems that may impede the speedy resolution of the matter in question. The rune below the center indicates what aspects of the problem must be accepted and cannot be changed. Positive runes here show a lack of troublesome influences and oppositions, while negative runes show the obstacles to your success. The rune to the right of center is the result rune. This rune indicates the final outcome. The layout relates to recent future happenings, usually within three months."

Deep Breath.

"Like before you can visualize a different situation you have that you want resolved or a problem you have that is most on your mind whether it be school, relationship or even to some of you your love life. Try to make it a different question from your last one"

He motioned them to begin again.

OOC: Hey Guys you are basically doing the same thing as before just a little more complicated. If you want you can do it in one post or two. Sokolov will be walking around if your character has more questions and such. I will be moving on in around 24 hours

Jace had been busy thinking about things that he already bordered daydreaming. The first result didn’t yield favourable results, making him believe that he wasn’t thinking hard enough...or that his thoughts were scattered about...or simply was too afraid to ask that one question: will he succeed this summer? Because he’d been waiting and training all year round for this grading; should he fail then...what next?

Instead, the Ravenclaw took detailed notes of the lesson, purposefully skipping the first part of the activity and just wrote down his observations. The three Rune layout was pretty easy, however, the five Rune layout was rather more interesting. After a few moments of debating with himself, Jace obediently took his notes aside, and grab hold of his paper bag and started to gently shake it, allowing him to be hypnotized by the sound while thinking about his upcoming Kendo grading. Will he make it?

The 14 year old placed his hand inside the bag, and drew the first rune stone, making sure that the inscription was against the white cloth, and the smooth surface facing him. He did the same for the next four runes, placing them in the same order of revealing it. Once he completed the five runes, he then flipped the first rune, then the second, third, fourth and fifth, taking down notes on each of the rune that was revealed:

SPOILER!!: Runes!

1. Dagaz (Present) : This very positive rune signifies a well-led life, an individual who is happy with themselves and their position in life. Balance has been achieved. Positive, good forces will be at work very shortly, because expectations have been managed and risks properly assessed.
2. Berkana (Past) : Berkana frequently refers to domestic issues and personal relationships -- particularly those involving emotional support, nurturing and "standing by" loved ones.
3. Algiz (Help) : As the best defense is often a good offense, this rune symbolizes protection in all of its forms; both offense and defense, proactive and reactive. The appearance of this rune indicates the presence of a threat, and a need to guard against something. Algiz signals that this protection may be expected from an outside source in a conflict that is either forthcoming or is already ongoing.
4. Thurisaz (Barrier) : Thurisaz is the sacrifice that one must make in order to make progress in life. It is the very essence of discipline. This rune references the pain that must be endured for the reward that lies at its end. It may be likened to a long period of study that lies before the start of a satisfying career. A painful lesson learned. Monetary hardship, a temporary separation, or anything that requires a personal sacrifice to "get through" to the other side of the situation.
5. Gebo (Result) : A divine gift, the gift of life or of balance. It is important that all parties remain equitable when the gift is given, or that balance which is so important to relationships may be endangered.

It took Jace a moment or two to internalize what he just read and wrote down on his parchment. Either it was coincidence, or the Runes are that powerful because it pretty much summed up his term in preparation for his Kendo grading. He’d been balancing academics with practice sessions, and it almost drove him to the edge. His eyes lingered on the Gebo rune. Even if it directly indicates marriage, or relationship in general, his thoughts latched on the possibility that he will succeed. What could possibly be the best gift given to him this coming summer anyway? His Nidan Certificate of course.

It took a few moments for Azura to pull herself back to the present and listen to what the Professor was saying. The last rune of that reading. It had shaken her a bit and she took a few moments to breathe before sweeping the Runes off of her desk and back into her bag.

Her purple eyes flicked to the Professor as he told them what they needed to do. Another question? Or situation?

Almost instantly something popped into her mind. Something that had been weighing on her heart for awhile now.

Chris.

She closed her eyes and concentrated as she took out the first tune she touched and placed it face down in the middle, she did the exact same same thing again and it it on the left, the top, the bottom and the right. Finally she had all five Runes laid out before her.

She took a breath and raised a shaking hand to flip the middle one over..

She closed her eyes, unable to watch as she flipped them all over and then opened her eyes and started her reading.

SPOILER!!: Runes!

Isa (present): Inactivity, blockage, stagnation.

Wunjo (past):Success, reward, joy, bliss.

Algiz (help): Protection, defense, warning

Purisaz (barrier): Hardship, knowledge, introspection

Naudhiz (result): Discontent, hardship, obstacle

Azura couldn't believe how accurate all of this was, though the last Rune scared her half to death.. Her teeth clamped down on her lip hard as she looked at that last little wood piece..

Not only was she not supposed to go to music school now.. but she might have a hard time with Chris?

Was anything going to go right?

Fwoopers forbid she have another reading about her mother!

The entire universe? Like...the Cosmos? Because Olivia was pretty sure that was the same sales pitch Divination boasted. As in it was the entire Cosmos, the stars, etc, etc... There was just a lot? But mostly, she appreciated his added comment of it only being as accurate as someone's belief allows it to be. As a Gryffindor, Liv would buy that.

So..... THIS NEXT LAYOUT.

It looked like a cross, for starters...and required more in-depth thinking, and honestly, it sounded like a lot of work. Ancient Runes, man. This class... had been the hardest for her this term. Even more so than Arithmancy and Transfiguration. Just because it wasn't practical application as much? But more a lot to remember. There was so much to remember. She'd never taken this many notes before on anything in her life. Literally.

Pushing the runes back into her bag, she once again stuck her hand down into it, shifting them around. As she had with the previous layout, Liv thought her question to herself, rather than allowing her RPer to type it out in this post. Just keeping it all super vague, thank you. Pulling the first rune, she laid it in the center, and then pulled another for the "past" position. She hadn't flipped any of them yet, thinking she might do this after they were all face down on the cloth. Did it really matter? All she could figure was that she'd be more receptive to the reading if she were doing them all at once and not pulling them individually.

Adding three more rune tiles face down, Olivia set the bag off to the side, before taking a breath and flipping the first one, dead center. Ehwaz. Again. To the left, she flipped Perthro., and on top, Fehu.. Sowilō appeared on the very bottom...and Berkana was flipped in the final position. Also, as an aside, it took her searching through her textbook to properly identify these runes, three out of the five of them. Some trivia for you, because after a while, these things had a tendency of blurring together and looking exactly the same.

Merlin, her head hurt already.

"How do inverted runes factor in with these types of readings. How can you tell if a rune is flipped and meant to be inverted?" Or was that a stupid question? Her quill was already moving quickly against her notebook page as she collected the meanings for each rune.

She REALLY needed to start speaking more loudly when asking something - particularly when she had little confidence in her inquiry.

Making a mental note to look things up later, Paige set to performing her three rune spread - the Norns spread - and continued to gently shake her bag while thinking of something to ask...which was quite difficult as she really had all the answers she needed right now and everything else, well, she did not really want to know and would much rather experience things as they came. Still...she couldn't resist asking something. Something that she knew in her heart to already be true - not that she could explain to anyone why she did.

Although some she confided in...understood without her needing to say much at all.

First up was the rune of the past...gebo - one that Paige actually did not need to look up the meaning of and well...yes. It was quite the fitting rune to represent the past, so Paige was pleasantly surprised at the moment. Reaching into the bag, the seventh year removed the second rune and placed it on her desk beside the first. The present... teiwaz...she needed to reference her textbook again for that and...yes. Again...strangely accurate. Although the positive outcome was something yet to be officially achieved given a few stressful developments...but that was still encouraging. When DID the present begin and end for this sort of thing and when was the official transition into the future? More questions she had regarding runic spreads she would have to ask later. Leaving the two runes on her desk, Paige removed a third rune and placed it - immediately referencing her textbook once again. "Othala," she said to herself as her fingers lightly brushed over the text. Buzzwords such as home, permanence, and sense of belonging certainly stuck out to the Hufflepuff and she found her cheeks rising in color and feeling like she could heat hotcakes on them. Confirmation...basically...if nothing else that her feelings were true.

No sooner had she finished with the three rune spread, the runes returning to her bag, the professor had moved on to the next spread. With five runes. Holy honking daffodils. A different question though? Done. She was debating two fields of healing at university and may as well use that inquiry as practice now.

Shaking her bag again, Paige quickly removed her five runes and placed them in the appropriate position on her desk.

Fresh piece of parchment out, Paige began scribbling down basic notes on her spread before diving right into a proper analysis.

Quote:
PRESENT: Naudhiz - Poverty, hardship, responsibility, discontent, obstacle, frustration
PAST: Dagaz - Happiness, success, activity, a fulfilling lifestyle, satisfaction.
HELP: Gebo - Gift, offering, relationship, love, marriage, partnership, generosity, unexpected good fortune.
BARRIER: Mannaz - Significator, self, family, community, relationships, social concerns
RESULT: Berkana - Fertility, health, new beginnings, growth, conception, plenty, clearance
And....now that she was looking things over and reading into the deeper analysis of each rune in her textbook...Paige had no more clarity on which path in her healing studies to pursue and was, in fact, more confused. Maybe she needed to pose her inquiry more clearly...although something in her gut was telling her that magical pediatrics may be more what the runes were implying she lean towards rather than rehabilitation and spell reversal and spell damage.

Viktor walked around some more and well....some where getting it better than other but for the most part everyone was trying. He was seeing definitions of runes meanings and even seeing some Gebo's around. Interesting stuff.

Oh another question from Olivia.

"Ah inverted runes. You will be able to tell if its inverted by studying how they look in your textbook. Or just look at the pictures of them. Also Rune users and even Professors disagree on whether or not to place a different meaning on a rune that falls in an inverted or reversed position. As most of you can tell by looking at some of these runes. Some of them look the same upside down and right side up. You don't have to worry about those. Nevertheless, any of the runes may appear as a merkstave ,which just means dark stick and implies a darker meaning depending on how the runes are cast. So to answer the first question last. They usually add a darker meaning to your reading."

Also they should probably be copying merkstave down since he will be bring that up that back up again around exam time.

Its a fun word.

"One more thing and then you are free to leave. If you ever find yourself in a need to do another one of these reading. You do not want to be disturbed and try to sit facing North if possible, that was the direction of the Gods in Norse mythology. Okay that is all i got for you today. You can all pack up and leave"

Now time for him to continue his research on Seidr.
