Default Transfiguration Lesson #1; Don't Bug Out

Welcome to Transfiguration

Nana Ichihara's classroom is as immaculate as ever. Every chair in place, every desk polished to shine, there is - as usual - not even a speck of dirt on her floor. However, as you enter you will notice a difference in the atmosphere of the room. A heady warmth that is reminiscent of a humid summer's day fills the well-lit space.

Professor Ichihara sits behind her desk, hands folded neatly in her lap. Her complexion unnaturally dewy thanks to the heat, however, it is a small price to pay for their assembled 'guests' this lesson. You will notice (if you are of the variety of student that notices) a series of glass tanks on the right hand side of the room, each tank is filled with various flora, some water and rocks, but no visible sign of life.

Please take your seat (and try not to doze off even if it is rather early). Class will begin shortly.

Greetings and an Unusual Challenge.

Questions, Critters and Live Transfigurations.

Getting to Know Your Creature: Mini Activity!

OOC: Class has begun! If you want to join in, please do. Simply have your student behave as if they have been in class since the beginning.
If you do decide to have them turn up "late" there will be IC consequences.

Please read and familiarize yourself with Ichihara's Rules and kindly remember that all Snitchseeker Rules and Regulations Still Apply.

Hadley grinned. She was gonna die if she had to stay in her robes. Thankfully, Ichihara had given them all permission not to wear them. Thank Merlin for small favors. Hads quickly shucked off her robes and gave Tenacius a wave and a look that seemed to say, I'll explain later.

Turning back to Professor Ichihara, Hadley hesitated. How did she want to play this? She wanted Itchy Mara to know and yet not know. Know that she was serious about animagus training, with or without the Professor's help and tutelage, but not so blatantly as to end up into detention because of it.

How to respond.

After thinking it over, Hadley uncapped her marker and started to scribble on the whiteboard. When she held it up again, sprawled in her neat handwriting was, The cat. As in the cat has her tongue. But around the answer, boarding the edges was an intricate leaf and vine motif. The real answer, hidden as a doodle at the edges.

With a smirk, she erased the board and thought a moment more, this time about the tanks and a question to ask. Then she held the board up for Ichihara. What is the name of the creatures in the tanks?

Ohhh, they could take off their robes. That would be helpful. While the temperature was uncomfortable, it wasn't enough to really bother him - he'd been in places with temperatures like this quite a lot, but it would be more comfortable without the robes. A little less sweating and stuff. So the small teen stripped down to his shirt and pants, loosening the tie a little bit around his neck as well. Better... better. He resisted the urge to rest his head on his arm on the desk and instead tried to focus on the plants and everything all around them.

"Certain plants need climates like this to be able to grow... is it gonna be about transfiguring them to survive outside of this climate, or how transfiguring them into something else might change their ability to survive here?" Like transfiguring something into a fish. If you weren't in the right sort of place for that... if you didn't have water for it... that might not go over so well. Same concept with plants. Certain plants wouldn't survive in this type of climate, while these ones did.

Maybe. Possibly. The boy rubbed his eye absently and looked around again.

Wrong questions would yield...interesting outcomes???? Kitty did not like the sound of that at all. She gazed at the tanks with narrowed eyes. There were plants inside them, along with water and rocks. But no fish that Kitty could see nor any other life form. What were they doing in transfiguration?

Kitty was inclined to not ask any question - out of fear of what the "interesting outcomes" might be. This was her third year at Hogwarts and she knew that "interesting outcomes" were not always pleasant outcomes. But staying silent might catch the professor's attention and she might get the interesting outcome anyway.

She raised her hand shakily into the air and asked in a quivering voice, "Are we going to transform into small animals and go inside the tanks?" As she asked this she turned to count the tanks to see if there was one for everyone. Actually, her guess was pretty creepy, not something she wanted to be correct on.

Well, this was an interesting way to do a lesson! Esme was rather intrigued despite the fact that she was feeling tired and dying from the heat and humidity. What would happen if someone asked the wrong question? Could they have water dumped over their heads? Right now she felt she could do with another shower so that was more than welcome...

Some people might opt out of asking a question but she wasn't one of them; in fact there WAS something that she had been wondering about. Raising the hand that she wasn't using to fan herself because multi-tasking, she said, "Are we going to transfigure objects into animals that live in humid climates?" Kitty's contribution was also interesting... Were they going to have a repeat of Herbology? That had been a lot of fun and had given off serious Honey, I Shrunk the Kids vibes.

Could they do it again??

He made Pretty Chi-Chi laugh. Score for the Salander boy awwyea!

And his robes? Gone even before he was halfway into the room. That was like second nature to him. The most he ever wore in Santorini was a t-shirt and shorts. And the former wasn’t always on. He'd have strip down to his polo shirt and rolled up his pants too but yeah....still a classroom, not beachside.

So Haddie cant speak? "Don’t speak... I know what you're sayin..." he crooned jokingly. Hey she knows he's musical by now so no surprised there eh?

Ok so apparently those tanks were new and were related to the humidity. Now Professor Pretty Face is playing twenty questions with them. Hmmm what to ask....his blue-green gaze takes up the scenery in the tanks as he mulled over....

.....squint. Waitaminute "Is there water in those tanks?" because it was hard to tell from where he's seated. Also he was starting to feel thirsty.

Fiyero's face blushed to the same shade of red as his Gryffindor tie, though he wasn't sure if it was from the extreme heat in the room or the embarrassment that Professor Ichihara had overheard him. He really hadn't mean to cause trouble; he was just trying to start a conversation!

He half-expected Professor Ichihara to make the room hotter as punishment, but that hadn't happened... yet. Still he was going to be extra attentive today to make it up to her.

Ooh, they were playing a guessing game today? Cool! He wondered what the "interesting results" of a wrong guess might be. Nothing too bad, he hoped! He looked around the room for clues before venturing a guess, his eyes settling on the tanks. His hand shot up suddenly. "Are we going to be turning something into tropical fish?" he guessed.

Or maybe some other kind of animal that liked humid climates and needed water in order to survive?

There it was, a reaction. Whether the rest of the class took notice or frankly even their presence was inconsequential to Daxton; generally speaking, it was not possible for him to care any less about their thoughts or opinions. No, all he wanted, all he was usually after, was the attention of one or two people in particular, and he had that. He knew how to get it.

Not that leaving the classroom was all about that this time. In actual fact, the temperature and humid atmosphere in the room really was of such an unbearable level for Daxton that it was wisest for him to leave at once... not that he was likely to openly admit that. Overheating never ended well for Daxton. It was almost a shame, as he was sure he might have liked to stick around and make his day more interesting. Perhaps after class, seeing as he had been summoned to Ichihara's office.

Giving a simple shrug in response, Daxton continued out of the door and let it fall shut heavily behind him. Once in the less stifling air of the corridor, he took a refreshing breath and headed off for the Room of Requirement, to practice magic with just his own company.

The perspiration 'glow' that Dot was sporting at the moment was NOT one of her favorite looks, and was far more likely in the greenhouses than here in the middle of Transfiguration class. Dot fanned at her face and tried to pay attention, resenting how the professor made even sweating look pretty.

Meanwhile, this redhead was turning into a tomato.

The tanks, though. Focus on the... nope. Too sweaty. "D'you have anything cool to drink, Professor?"

So her questions really WOULD be answered. Because she gets to ask them. Huh. Funny how that worked out. Arielle raised her hand. "Will we be transfiguring the plant life and rocks into water creatures?" She was REALLY curious about what the tanks were for. They couldn't just be for holding a few inanimate objects could they? Of course, Arielle knew she couldn't ask a simple question though, that wouldn't get her any points. And points were the most important thing here right?

Olly had seen the tanks. He hadn't really thought much of them at first. Maybe the professor was redecorating. Getting an aquarium or something. But now he was starting to think that they were important. People were asking questions about what was in them. He couldn't see anything alive in them though. Nothing moving. Nothing visible. He peered closely for a moment before shaking his head and trying to focus on the lesson. Except it wasn't really a lesson. They were just supposed to ask questions but how on earth was he supposed to know what sort of question to ask. It was insane. But since that's what he was supposed to do, he would do it. Olly thought quickly and raised his hand.

"Uhh...professor, what's your favorite spell?" Probably not productive but it was the best he could think of.

After laying her things out on the table in front of her she cast a quick sideways glance at the blonde beside her and smiled. She was by far much happier now that they were getting along again. It also made the whole Mandrake leaf thing seem not so bad when you had someone going through it all along side you.

The gaze of a pair of hazel eyes shifted back onto Nana once the lesson had begun. When instructed that they could remove their robes Hady wasted no time at all in doing so, unbuttoning the latch that held it closed and shrugging it off her shoulders. Fixing her robes on the back of her chair neatly she then went ahead to unbutton the button at each of her wrists and folded her sleeves up neatly until just under her elbows. It was a bit better but not to much.

As for asking questions about the tanks...well that was different. She had a few guesses but none she would be voicing. Best to let whatever outcome happened fall upon the shoulders of her fellow classmates and anyhow she wasn't about to be talking unnecessarily right now. She was curious though about all the answers being given. Transforming into a creature was always fun, could they do that today please?

It was really way too hot in here. Hattie really didn't like it being hot. She liked heat, but not too much heat. This was too much heat. She fanned her face a little. Could they turn the heat down? How was she supposed to remember anything if she felt like she was wanting to fall asleep. She really did feel like she wanted to sleep. But she couldn't. Because she was in a lesson, and she was sure the Professor wouldn't like her falling asleep.

Ah. A question to keep herself from falling asleep. She thought about it, before asking a question. "Professor..." She began, as she raised her hand into the air. "Are we going to maybe learn about how transfiguration can aid survival in really hot, and humid places?" Because that would really help her right now.

Merlin, it was absolutely sweltering in here. Nana was sincerely regretting her choice of slacks over the dress she’d originally picked out. The fan she’d enchanted to follow after her was providing a paltry excuse for air her way, but there wasn’t much else to be done to rectify the situation. Leisurely, Nana stepped away from her desk and began her turn about the classroom, weaving through the desks as the students spoke.

She guessed she could make it more hotter so best keep quiet.

When class began, Bec immediately had a confused expression on her face. Her eyes went over to the tanks at the side of the room and she looked even more confused when nothing special was inside of them. Looking back, the Gryffindor then shrugged her shoulders and bravely put up her hand.

"Is there a creature in the tanks?" that was a good question right?
Nana tilted her head at the little Gryffndor. “Yes, more than one in each tank. Take two points for Gryffindor, Miss Meadows.”

“No not today, miss Tate. But an interesting question.” However off it might have seemed to the older woman. “Take two points for Gryffindor.”

Okay, then.

So, what are we doing today, Professor? Meh. Too generic. More like, and hand up, "Can we please transfigure into something that can fight off this horrible heat, Professor?" And with the tanks probably playing a part in this lesson, he was cool with being a seaweed. Seaweeds do not sweat off like him, do they?
“I could turn you into an animal that prefers the heat if you like, mister montezor.” Nana replied, lips quirked into a small, but amused smirk. “Unfortunately, the heat as I mentioned earlier is quite necessary for today’s lesson.”

"Professor does climate have any impact on spell casting? At all? Or like different ones more than others?" Because why else would they have it all weird in transfiguration unless they were supposed to be trying to get around the temperature and humidity? All the spells she could think of that would make it more comfy were charms after all, rather than transfiguration spells and OOOH maybe they would get to conjure something! MAYBE A CREATURE. MAYBE CONJURE THINGS TO FILL THE TANKS! OOOOOH!
Nana had expected a slew of questions from miss Kettleburn, and so, was slightly disappointed by just the one. “That’s an excellent question, Miss Kettleburn. There are many ways in which climate can affect a wizard’s magic. Usually it is caused by a more physiological response, but in the case of more elemental spells the climate can make the casting far more difficult than usual. For example.” Nana gently flourished her wand, conjuring a large mason jar in hand.

The Professor cleared her throat before once again giving her wand a little flick. “Aquamenti.” She softly said. From her wand spurted cool, clear water, but the amount was as insignificant as a leak from a broken faucet.

“As you can see, the spell lacks any real punch. This is due to the humidity in the air around us. Now, naturally you would think that humidity would make it easier to gather water as the moisture is in plain words, trapped in the air. However, with water-conjuring spells it has an inverse effect, making it actually more difficult to gather water to work with. It does not make the spells impossible, but it forces the wizard to put more oomph into it.” Showing the quarter full mason jar to the class, Nana raised her wand and with a stronger intent in mind she said “Aquamenti!” The water flowed from her wand up into the air, forming an arch before splashing perfectly into the mason jar.

That was better.

"Are we learning a method for dealing with the humidity or is the humidity a necessity for whatever we'll be working with?" She had not bothered to raise her hand, and spared a glance at the empty tanks again. Certain vegetation would thrive like this... certain creature life, too... Part of Nicky was quite curious, and she turned her glance to her classmates, wondering who would be surprised at her interest.
It was always a welcome surprise when Miss Iver spoke up. “A well thought out question, Miss Iver. The humidity is indeed a necessity for today’s guests. I think you might be quite familiar with some of them.” Nana said, smiling softly as she passed by the Ravenclaw.

Just like that, class was called to order. Apparently they would be playing the wizard version of twenty questions today. Janelle wasn't exactly sure if she liked the "wrong question, interesting outcome statement". Hopefully, she would ask an appropriate question. Janelle raised her hand to give it a shot. "Is there some humidity loving animal in the tank, that has been hidden or made invisible?" Curious minds wanted to know.
“Very good, miss Guidry.” The Ravenclaws were playing to win today, it seemed. “The animals we are working with are from climates much warmer than Britain, unfortunately for us they need the humidity and heat to properly persevere.”

"Are we going to be focusing on a spell that witches and wizards in tropical area rely heavily on?"
“An astute deduction based on your surroundings, Mister Moore, but that is not the case for today.” So far there had been nothing but good questions and astute observations and Nana was almost a little sad that her surprise was going to waste.

This is what happened when you taught a class of well-reasoned students.

Ah, the cat. How curious…. She wasn’t sure whether to further questio or let the Ravenclaw be… No, she decided, she was going to happily let this little thing go, and so, the Professor paid no mind to the leaf motif, nor the hint lay hidden within.

“They have quite a few names. We have a Grammostola pulchra more commonly known as a Brazilian Black Tarantula. Extatosoma tiaratum, more commonly known as the spiny leaf insect. Phobaeticus chani, or Megastick which is a variety of stick bug, along with an American Walking stick of the smaller variety. And my own favorite Euthalia aconthea, or a Baron Caterpillar.” Quite a mouthful, that was. ”Quite the menagerie.”

Like transfiguring something into a fish. If you weren't in the right sort of place for that... if you didn't have water for it... that might not go over so well. Same concept with plants. Certain plants wouldn't survive in this type of climate, while these ones did.

Maybe. Possibly. The boy rubbed his eye absently and looked around again.
“No, but that is an excellent lining of questions. it does bring to mind many moments where Transfiguration would become a necessity for certain animals, flora and of course, witches and wizards to not only survive in a climate uncomfortable to them, but even thrive there. It also, brings to mind how Transfiguration can be used simply to make one’s life easier.. Many marine magizoologist, for example, use Transfiguration upon themselves to better help in their research. For instance, giving themselves gills, transfiguring some part of their own bodies to better understand the physiology of rarer species and so on.” Nana replied, giving Jaemin a small, but encouraging smile as she passed him by.

Nana blinked at the Ravenclaw’s actions. Her question would wait. “Miss Valentine, are you alright? You seem to be in a state.”

“... yes, Mister Salander. There are some smaller pools of water in the tanks.” Nana gave her wand a long wave and a cool splash of water fell upon the Gryffindor’s head. “For your question.” Okay, but secretly she had been waiting to do that all class.

All in good fun, Mister Salander. All in good fun.

Another splash of water fell from nowhere. This time upon the lively mister Jones. “No, not today. Transfiguring ourselves into animals, though interesting, would…. “ How did she put this. “When you are transfigured by another person into an animal, you gain that animals thinking process. In a sense, you are still you, for your soul is still intact, but you very much become that animal. It would not make for a good full class learning experience.”

Besides, her mentor preston Kingsley had done that lesson in this very classroom almost a decade ago and Nana, though following in his footsteps, was eager to carve her own path in Hogwarts history.

Not that leaving the classroom was all about that this time.

Sigh, Exit one Daxton Prince.

“Not quite, but you’re very close, miss lestrange.” Nana gave the girl a nod. No water this time, though.

"Uhh...professor, what's your favorite spell?" Probably not productive but it was the best he could think of.
that got a proper laugh out of the Professor. Wiping her sweaty brow, she raised up her wand. “Orchideous!” She said, conjuring a bouquet of white Gardenias. “That one.” She said, before handing the bouquet over to the Slytherin boy.

Ah. A question to keep herself from falling asleep. She thought about it, before asking a question. "Professor..." She began, as she raised her hand into the air. "Are we going to maybe learn about how transfiguration can aid survival in really hot, and humid places?" Because that would really help her right now.
“Yes, Miss patton.” Nana said, turning her attention to the young Hufflepuff. She shook her head. “No, not today, but a very good question.”

“You’re very close, Miss Darcy, but today we’ll be working in the reverse order. Transfiguring Animals into objects based on their anatomy.” Nana made her way toward the tanks. She tapped each one in stride, sending them to wheel themselves and the tables they sat upon to the very front of the class. The animals within were not invisible as many of the students had guessed, but simply hidden away thanks to their own means of camouflage.

--------------------------

“No more questions? Then let us begin. Today we will be working with these Muggle insects and arachnids, and we’ll be using their special attributes and abilities to our favor.” Nana began, stepping up to the first tank and slipping her hand in. several tarantula, black very furry and eight-legged had dug themselves beneath the sand, but with a snap of the Professor’s hands, the spiders unearthed themselves in search of food. Professor Ichihara gently picked up the largest of them, and allowed it to crawl up along her arm. The hair was ticklish and a little tough on her sensitive skin, but the spider himself was especially placid. “Today’s lesson is not simply on How To Turn An Animal Into Something Else, but on the Exploration of the Concept of Live Transfiguration.” It was a heady topic, but one she had been itching to delve into with the students. “The Process of Live Transfiguration though on occasion rather difficult, is very useful to the witch or wizard on the go. You never know when something like turning a tea cup into turtle dove might come in handy. And yet, despite the art’s usefulness and trendiness many witches and wizards lack a fundamental understanding of it.”

“Now, I have a few questions for you.” Nana turned her attention properly to the students. “Why do you think we teach students to transfigure porcupines into pin cushions? What purpose might there be in that? Does it make the Transfiguration easier? If so, how? And does that make it impossible to say…. Transfigure a tarantula into anything except prickly objects? If so, why?”

“Discuss, debate, There are no wrong answers in my class.” Nana added, petting the thorax of the spider now comfortably seated on her forearm.

OOC: Hi guys, still plenty of time to join in the fun before activity, no need for catch up posts as we’re only on to the second question of class. Also, though Nana did not mention it, points will be awarded to all those who questioned.

So his questions weren't right, but they were good questions? At least he was doing something sorta right... Jaemin watched the professor move about the room, listening to the other students and their answers. At least he hadn't been one of the ones to get splashed with water, though... in this situation, it might have felt good. He had to remind himself, however, that wet clothing was uncomfortable too.

Concept of Live Transfiguration. Process of Live Transfiguration. Right. He'd read about stuff in his Transfiguration book, of course... he'd read lots of stuff. He didn't really understand everything just yet, but he was sure he'd get there eventually... still, the small boy raised his hand as the professor listed off her own questions.

"I think we do stuff like porcupines to pin cushions because it's simpler to make something into something else that's similar to its original form," he murmured, watching the spider intently. He didn't look at the professor herself the whole time, just... at the spider. It was much bigger than the spiders in his yard, and that was vaguely uncomfortable. "You can turn things into pretty much anything though, right? Like you can turn a mouse into a cup that you can drink out of, but it's harder than turning a mouse into like... a small pillow or something. Because you're changing all of the thing, and not just most of it. There's no physical properties that stay the same, so it's more difficult."

Not long after he sat down, Hady took a seat next to him. It was nice not having to do the mandrake leaf thing on his own. It was nice having someone that could relate to what he was going through; otherwise, he would have given up about a few days after popping that leaf in his mouth. The blond flashed a smile her way as he took out what he needed for the lesson.

After setting everything on his desk, he looked up, only to see Nicky staring and waving at them. Nope. Not even going to acknowledge that. Frankie turned his head away from her. Doing so caused him to notice that a certain Slytherin had arrived. The boy gave her a polite nod of his head. See that, Brookie? He could be nice. Sometimes.

His attention was then captured by Professor Ichihara. How was the leaf treating him? Was it bitter? All Frankie did in response was nod at her and force a smile. He had a feeling in his gut that she was amused by all of this. Well played, professor. Well played.

Then the lesson began ... rather differently. They didn't have to wear every item of their uniform AND they were asking questions to start things off? Was Ichihara ill?

As everyone started asking their questions, one of the Ravenclaws writing hers down (what was that all about, hmm?), the prefect shrugged off his robes and loosened his tie a bit more. His head jerked up when the professor mentioned all of the creatures that they'd be seeing in class today for purposes of Live Transfiguration. That explained the temperature of the room ... and he was sure Hady wasn't going to be so appreciative about one of them.

Speaking of Hady, he turned to her after the professor asked all of those questions. Why did they have to discuss and debate? It was difficult enough having to eat with a mandrake leaf in his mouth, mind you talk. So he grabbed his quill and wrote on the bit of parchment he had laid out on his desk. Was there anything she wanted to add?

Quote:
  • Because transfiguring animals into stuff is FUN! :)
  • Makes things convenient. Never know when you'll be in need of a hairbrush or something. Makes transporting animals easier too.
  • It's easier to transfigure an animal into an object that has similar attributes. Porcupines are prickly, pin cushions are prickly.
  • Not impossible, but it's more challenging and requires more concentration and skill if the attributes aren't very similar.

So, basically, from what Genny could tell so far, ALL the fun and interesting guesses were a no and it was something boring and fundamental and blah blah blah. The disappointed look (that they were not learning how to transform into fish) was visible on her face as she folded her arms on the table and leaned forward on them, already giving up on the theoretical part of this lesson. Discuss and debate as if it was an interesting topic in the first place, pft. Sigh.

She looked sideways at the water tanks, her eyes gave the beautiful flora inside a sorrowful look. What a waste of such beauty on studying insects and such. In fact, she didn't even understand what they were discussing, she didn't pay much attention after the professor turned all the guesses down and started using long words with vague meanings. Why did professors have to make everything sound so difficult and un-fun?

No matter. Genny could find fun. If she looked hard enough...the little boy's answer made her groan quietly. This class was obviously for crazy boys. Hmph.

Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll

Fiyero shook his head as a jet for water from Professor Ichihara's wand hit him in the face. What was that for?! Was that punishment for earlier, or did she think his guess was a joke? It made sense to him. Tanks full of water usually meant fish, so what was with all the tanks sitting out if they weren't doing something related to fish? And technically, he didn't say anything about turning people into fish! He meant more along the lines of transfiguring those plants and rocks in the tank...

He was also not blind to the fact that the only other student she'd splashed also happened to be a Gryffindor. Did this professor have something against Gryffindors? He heard a quiet groan, and his head whipped around in the direction of the sound to a girl lhe didn't know. Was that directed at him? He wanted to shoot her an angry look, but he forced himself to keep his eyes fixed on the desk in front of him so as not to cause any more trouble.

Fiyero almost laughed when Professor Ichihara said there were no wrong answers in her class. If that's true, why did you just splash me? he thought. He tried to come up with an answer to her questions, but he was too frustrated to think straight. The only answer he could think of had already been said, and besides, he didn't want to say the wrong thing and get splashed again, so he decided to keep quiet. This class was off to a bad start...

Dot was pleased with her jar full of cool water, and she sipped from it as she listened to the professor explain the activity. Bugs, though. Spiders. Not cool at all. Pass, okay?

"Maybe because they already share some similar physical properties, it makes it easier? Or maybe it just makes it easier psychologically... but it's all in our heads?" She wasn't sure. The professor sort of made Dot think in new and different ways.

Ohhh water splash. Its beachside already! Tenacius chuckled he shook off the excess water from his curls. Well that was refreshing in this elevated heat.

Ok so apparently the tank is a terrarium with a few water features. Definitely raising something in there. And the leonine lad could only grin even wider when the Professor started naming the spiders AND took out a BIG FRIGGIN TARANTULA. Oh now he wants to run closer to the tanks and go for an arachnid petting session.

But right Transfiguration. Up goes the hand "I guess... I guess we find creatures that matches some of the properties we want the new thing to have so that we don’t have to magically create them? I mean I guess its easier for a porcupine to make into a pincushion because same shape and appearance, versus having to do that with an owl, where you have to create ALL the properties to make it into a suitable pin cushion." did that make any sense?

He kinda wished they could be shrunk down to size and have a go swimming in that terrarium lake.

Oooh, so she had been close in her reasoning, just working in the wrong order. Esme wondered if the animals were invisible since she couldn't see them anymore. Or not because now there were tarantulas and one of them was crawling up the Professor's arm. Yeaaaaaah.

Shuddering slightly, she watched the arachnid. They didn't SCARE her - well, not the non-Acromantula ones - but that didn't mean that they couldn't unsettle them. Bugs and arachnids just weren't her thing and if they were supposed to hold them it wasn't going to happen. The thing could crawl around her desk as much as it wanted to but she was not going to touch it until it had been transfigured into an object.

Raising her hand, Esme said, "Transfiguration is a really hard subject and I think that this method helps to make it more simple. It's not as much of a stretch to turn the porcupine into a pin cushion as it is to turn it into something really soft like cotton. The physical properties are already there. I wouldn't say that it's impossible to turn a tarantula into a non-prickly object... just more complicated because you have to focus on changing all the properties and not just playing with them."

DID THIS MAKE SENSE?? In her head it made sense.

He got flowers! Olly beamed at Professor Ichihara and held on to the flowers. That was a pretty good spell, sure, but it was definitely not the most exciting one. But apparently it was her favorite. That was pretty much the only thing he learned from the entire question session. He tried to pay attention to other questions and answers but there was a lot to keep up with and it was hard.

Spiders! Olly liked spiders. He watched with interest as the one crawled up the professors arm. Would he get to hold a spider during the lesson? Wait, why were there spiders? This was Transfiguration, not Care of Magical Creatures. Then she was talking about porcupines and pin cushions and honestly Olly just was not following. Live animal transfiguration, that was the main point. Right? That made him have questions so it was even harder to focus on the actual point of the lesson.

"Professor, wouldn't transfiguring an animal into an object...hurt it?" Changing something living into something not living. Wouldn't that kill it or something?

Harriet wasn't overly good at Transfiguaration. But then she was only a first year, so that was expected. She liked the lesson though. Well. Maybe not when the professor got a big spider out. Hattie did not like spiders. She blinked, hoping that the Professor was not going to bring the spider too close. She didn't want to be too close. She took a deep breath. It was okay. Answer the question Harriet. She wouldn't let her fear of the creature stop her from learning.

She thought over the question for a few moments, before she raised her hand. "Does it make it easier because a pin cushion is similar to a porcupine? In the sense that they are both prickly" She murmured, in quiet voice. "But that would also suggest that if we transfigured the spider into something similar to the spider that it might be easier.... " Which made sense, not that she wanted to go near the spider. "Though a porcupine doesn't go as fast as a spider. So that might make it harder" Physically rather than magically.

Now that she had removed her robes and folded up her sleeves she was ready to go. Loads of questions came flying at Ichihara like there was no tomorrow. Some were just funny like asking her what her favorite spell was and others much more clever and on task. Either way not one question went unanswered. Props to Nana on that as well as her little water trick that she was using on some students to get them wet.

Hadleigh remained completely silent the entire time taking in all the answers. When it was mentioned that they would be working with some special creatures today this caught her attention all that much more. Creatures. YES! This was her thing. Her element and she was ready to ta-

No. No no no no!

No spiders! Or tarantulas!

Hadleigh visibly flinched shifting in her seat and actually shrinking back a little to make herself smaller. Why did it have to be tarantula. The sixth year heard nothing else that came after that her hazel eyes fixed on the Nana when the creature was removed from it's tank and was now freely moving about the womens arm. And yes Frankie this girls chair may have indeed inched it's way closer to his. Not to anymore reason then that she trusted him to keep that thing far far far away from her. So don't go letting her down on this one.

With eyes still on the gosh forsaken tarantula she missed every question that was asked. Truth be told she hadn't even registered Frankie was writing anything down until she noticed the brief movement of him at her side. A very quick glance at his parchment, words being skimmed over and she was caught up. Whatever he had wrote was fine by her just so she could leave now and get away from that eight-legged demon. A quick glance from the parchment to him was all that was needed to show she wasn't happy anymore. Eyes were now already back on Nana watching her every move.

Azura had her sleeves rolled up and her long black hair was up in a bun and she sat in the hot room, her purple eyes kept glancing over at the tanks and she blinked a little as she watched the Professor pick up the tarantula..

Why did those things sort of creep her out when she was able to talk to a giant one? She shook her head a little and took a breath.. As long as it wasn't a snake, she could handle it..

Maybe if she pretended that the spider could talk?

It was.. Sorta cute scampering up the Professors arm..

She turned her attention back to the Profesor at her Question and her purple eyes narrowed in thought a bit.. So many people had answered her first question.. So she was going to try to tackle the second one..

And hopefully not look stupid yeah?

She raised her hand and spoke "I think that they have similar properties, porcupines and pincushions.. Also they seem to be about the same size and shape, and of course the porcupines look like pincushions anyways.. But I would think that transformation is just getting us used to the idea of transfiguring animals as well as being able to do it properly." She took a breath, "I think we could turn the spider into anything if we wanted to.. After all, if rats can turn into tea cups, shouldn't a spider be able to turn into one too? "

Okay.. Umm..

That was long and a bit rambly..

Whoops?

Her nervousness must have shown, because now she was being asked if she was okay. "Huh? Oh, I'm okay Professor," replied Kitty in what she hoped was a brave voice, though it still came out a little shy. She sat up straighter in her chair to emphasize that she was fine.

Kitty watched as the giant spider crawled unto Professor Ichihara's arm. Even though she was not particularly frightened of spiders, she probably would have screamed if a spider had crawled on her arm. But, Kitty reasoned, Ichihara must know a lot about spiders and probably this spider in particular knew her, so there was no danger of being bitten. "My guess is that we transfigure these things (like porcupines into pin cushions) not for their own sake but for practice for when we have to transfigure something harder - or even if it isn't harder, but at least now we know how to do it." She elaborated. "Pretend you were trapped inside a deep cave and you didn't know how to Apparrate. Well, if you knew how to transfigure then you could transfigure nearby rocks and stalactites into food while you waited to be rescued or before you find another way to escape."

But after awhile of listening to her classmates answer, Kitty got the feeling that she totally misunderstood the question. She raised her hand again. "As to why we transform a porcupine into a pin cushion instead of an umbrella, it's probably because a pin cushion resembles a porcupine more than an umbrella - so it makes it easier. Yeah..."
