All ready for her duel, you wouldn't know that Char had burst into tears as soon as she had seen who her opponent would be. She had Chloe help her with her make up so that it was ON POINT and she'd spent ages on her hair even though in the end she'd only decided on a high and sleek ponytail. She wasn't going to overthink it. She was going to start out as tough as she could and hopefully not think about the part where she already felt like the loser for totally unrelated reasons.
Usually she was so bouncy and happy and offered greetings and wishes of good luck but Char stayed silent. Uncharacteristically.
She went through the motions of bowing and saluting and paces without looking. It would be easier not to, right? She didn't know what she'd find if she made eye contact.... would he be sad? Or mad? Or worse.... nothing? Cold?
She got right into it, shooting her newest acquired spell right at him, purple firecrackers. And then her usual featherlight on herself, and immediately after, MORE firecrackers.
And choked back a sob.

Merely seeing Char had knocked him for six and Rooney was struggling outright to even look at her again. Actually, he had looked at her once since immediately seeing her here and that was when they’d bowed. Roo had looked up through the hair that flopped in front of his eyes and caught her swooping her ponytail back up and he had almost thrown up right there on the floor. How was it possible that she could still make his stomach do the flips it used to around her by merely moving her head? Rooney couldn’t even use his tactic of blowing a kiss her way, because she wasn’t even TALKING to him.. It wouldn’t have an effect. And he doubted he could even blow a kiss to someone that had shared something so public with whomever there was in the world, without it hitting him in the heart more than it would her.
”Protego!” He cast at her first spell, fully aware that he was to expect her to cast on herself soon as that was typical of her in a duel. He wasn’t expecting her to cast so quickly after she used her wand on herself and wasn’t prepared at all. Hence jumping a few centimetres off the floor and squealing as he shielded his eyes with his arm. Jeeeeeeez.
Typical of himself, he shot back. ”Everte Statum!” Couldn’t they just have talked this out beforehand? Did Professor Hirsch KNOW that things had happened?

Charlotte brought her wand up like she was serving a ball back in a quickfire tennis match, casting a shield charm and sending the spell rebounding back to him, the impact of magic on magic driving her a few paces back, though she was otherwise unscathed, just in shock. It wasn't as if Char hadn't known that Roo was improving in his dueling, she had, after all, watched every single duel that he'd participated in, it was just that she wasn't exactly expecting him, Rooney Bronwyn, to try and hit her with something that could actually hurt.
Then again it wouldn't be the first time (just ask her poor wee baby heart!)
She followed the shield up with a fairly pitiful trip jinx and sucked in her bottom lip as it started to betray her with a wibble.

NOPE.
Roo almost cried out as he went backwards through the air, but instead swore under his breath that a girl had used his own spell against him. And the fact his bum hurt from colliding with the floor. That had been embarrassing and no doubt, he’d not live that down for the rest of his time in the castle. Had she needed to deflect it back? Was she really set on making him feel worse about everything than he already did? Clearly so. Anyone would think that he had broken her heart so much so by dating and then dumping her. And he hadn’t done that. Because they hadn’t been dating. And SHE had been kissed by Casper. And he knew full well that she was lying about not kissing Blaise. So he wasn’t completely in the wrong here…
He just wanted to tell her that they were both wrong. She’d probably moved straight on after his letter. Within minutes, even. Whatever.
From his spot on the floor, Rooney decided that if she wasn’t going to speak to him then he was going to duel her into making conversation. Duel her into accepting an apology from him. But she was already sending another spell his way, and he was so glad that he was low enough that a roll out of the way was on his agenda. PENCIL ROLL OUTTA THE WAY before tossing a Carpe Retractum” in the direction of the first girl he had ever kissed, following up with getting to his feet and casting once more.
”Slugulus Erecto!” You know…just in case the rope potential was out of question here. Roo had every intention to own this duel to impress Char enough that she said something to him. Gosh, silence was…horrible. You really could have cut the tension in this moment with a knife.

Her eyes were starting to brim over. Charlotte felt the watering and then that tell tail drip down her cheeks. She wiped the back of her wand hand across her face, wand still in her grip and didn't SEE the spell come at her, or hear it over her own sniffing. She stumbled back a little as ropes snaked around her and started pulling her forward. Luckily for her, with her arm up to rub her face, her wand was free.
"Diffindo!" She cast the spell carefully on the ropes and freed herself, sliced ropes falling harmlessly to the ground. She dived to the floor, the other spell going over her head. But now she couldn't see through the stupid tears.
"T-tergeo!" Still on the ground, she cast, her voice wibbling, wand pointed at her face. GOODBYE TEARS. DRY UP FOREVER.

The silence was so stark that Rooney finally caught the sniffling from his opponent and knew right then that this was the worst possible situation either of them could have been put in. He had thought it before now, sure…but right now he was certain of it. She was crying… And he was the reason. He’d never wanted to make Char cry and that was one of the reasons he wrote the letter instead of telling her face to face. SEEING her cry was the worst thing in the world and all he wanted to do was run the gap between them and give her a huge hug and promise her that he was completely and utterly devotedly sorry. But she would probably hex him ten times before he got there and he couldn’t risk that. So the hugging and the apologising would have to wait.
Roo tossed a Leek Jinx in her direction whilst she was dealing with her face or whatever, followed swiftly by a Scorching Spell. Anything to bring her attention back to him to hopefully see just how sorry he looked.

One thing to be said about the siphoning spell, it definitely cleared up all her tears, it was just that it didn't take away the emotions that caused them in the first place. Char cast an anti-jinx on herself so that the leek jinx would have no effect and then swiped her wand the other way to send the scorching spell careening back at Rooney.
"Protego!"
A SCORCHING spell. HE TRIED TO BURN HER. TO HURT HER EVEN MORE. Like that was FOR REAL, ROO. WELL he could have that back!
Sniff.
Shaking a little, she followed her defensive action with a blast of hot air, not enough to BURN ANYONE but for sure, discomfort.
And still said nothing at ALL.

Without time to think about what he was going to do next, Rooney had flames at his feet and knew immediately that the soles of his feet were going to need tending to after this. And that walking to the healer would be borderline impossible.. His shoes were flammable, OKAY?! The paint he had used on them was FLAMMABLE. He did the only thing he could think to do, and shouted his casting of ”Finite!” at the flames, before stepping aside out of the way of the next spell Char sent his way. He hadn’t even known what it was, so it could have honestly been some sort of help for what had just happened, but Rooney didn’t care right now.
Once he knew he’d stepped out of danger, he moved swiftly to undo his shoes and toss them aside, giving a careful glance to the singed fabric that was once his socks and then sat down. He knew, as good as anyone, that it was best to sit down if you were in a situation that would only bring pain and he wasn’t up for passing out from how much his feet hurt and taking a tumble hard enough to smash his head open. No thanks.
But he was feeling pretty woozy and the smell of burning was lingering for much too long for the fourth year. But he had to battle on. He couldn’t just let he win because she used his spell against him. He just needed to keep Char away from him until this was over… However long that was from now… Too long, he knew. Raising his wand, Rooney send both Impedimenta and a Smashing Spell in the Gryffindor’s direction before slumping down onto his side and biting his lip hard enough not to cry.

The anti-jinx around her did its job and dissipated the Impediment jinx he shot unerringly her way. Good thing too because even if he was hurt and on the ground his aim was pretty good, totally something she would have kissed him for and excitedly cheered him on about in the past.
But the PAST WAS THE PAST.
She dove out of the way in alarm at the next spell as an explosion sounded, hitting right where she had been standing, and threw back a quick one two of a Jelly Fingers Curse and Expelliarmus, her goal being to disarm him and take his wand.
Maybe she would talk to him. Maybe. After.

Doomed.
His was doomed and he knew it. As soon as he felt his fingers tingle in a warmer way than his feet were numbly tingling, Rooney knew it was all coming to an end. His…friendship? relationship? with Char was ultimately over after this and he hadn’t even had time to impress her with what he’d learnt this year. Instead he’d been blindsided by his own spell and his feet were absolutely throbbing. And now, as she cast expelliarmus on his, he watched his poor wand leap into the air and away from him. Roo hadn’t even been able to try grab it, because his hands hand just curled up again.
With a defeated sigh, Roo moved his arms in front of his face and curled up into a ball as best as possible. Less surface area for her to hurt if she came over and tried to boot him in the gut for being a spineless twerp.
Everything would have been so much easier if he just passed out right now. The pain was that bad. Both physical pain and emotional torture.

And he probably deserved it. "Go on... Kick me... Tell me you hate me..." Anything that wasn't a spell that was going to burn the heck out of his feet. But there was something about how she said his name, and how she was reaching for him...
Something that just made his insides hurt more than ever, because she was still Miss Charlotte, the Candy Cangel and he was the idiot that had decided to let her get away.
"I don't want to get up. My feet hurt." Was she going to gloat now? Tell him he deserved it?

He didn't believe her???? He was supposed to be her friend and he didn't believe her? She never once lied to him about anything! Not once! And she definitely had never kissed Blaise. Before she could do much more than open her mouth to protest that, he hit her with the next thing.
Charlotte gasped. A baby? SHE WAS NOT. FOURTEEN WAS NOT A BABY. SHE WOULD SHOW HIM. SHE WOULD. And then a little choked sound from her, a totally injured one as he basically hit her with a WORD HEX. It hurt more than spells did.

She wasn't sure which part hurt the worst, him calling her a baby, him saying she was kissing everyone in school, or the part where he didn't believe her and apparently she had been wrong about them being friends at all in the first place.
Sobbing, Charlotte dropped his stupid wand, withdrew her own from its holster, and cast a cooling charm on his stupid, stupid feet.
"Y-you're the worst, Rooney Bronwyn. You're cruel, and you're a bully, and you're wrong, and I ha-" She didn't. She didn't hate him. She couldn't even say it. She sniffled and wiped at her face with the back of her hand. "I believed in you but I don't any more! And I never will again!"

Hirsch's should've seen the signs. He should've seen that this wasn't going to be your everyday duel between two people who knew each other. This was going to be something worse and he, Hirsch, would have to stand there and watch through it all.
See, it started off well enough. There was a certain stiffness in the air but the man ignored it because there was a duel to take place and this atmosphere was, more or less, normal. Right?
Wrong.
Things seemed to go from bad to worse as the spells flying past got more and more intense. Something told him that this wasn't right but he kept his mouth shut and let them continue at it. It wasn't his business whatever it is that had happened between the two and he wasn't going to intervene just because of it. Hopefully, if everything went correctly, they would end this duel without any injuries and without too much bad air between them. No emotional drama, o-

Eyes wide, he immediately started to move forward to help a fallen Rooney up but had to come to a stop. Why? There was talking. And not your polite conversation either: this sounded like a conversation that shouldn't take place with a Professor listening in either. Could he hum loudly and pretend not to hear? Yes? But even as the thought crossed his mind, he was immediately pulled back into the conversation by the sound of Rooney........... making claims.
Oh. Oh Rooney, you didn't.
It was now that he rushed forward. Now that Miss Kettleburn was sobbing and Rooney was trying to crawl away. The man didn't say anything until he was crouching down near the Ravenclaw and starting helping him up. "Come on, up you get. We'll get you to the Hospital Wing to get your feet checked out, okay?" He placed the boy's arms around his shoulders and started trying to pull him up.
And another thing. "Oh, and Miss Kettleburn?" he asked, looking over at her, "Is, er, is there anything I can get for you?" Chocolates? Calming Draught?
