Default Astronomy Lesson :: space rocks

It was a bit unusual to have lesson so early in the day, but there was a method to the astronomer's madness - convoluted as they may be. The late February sun takes some of the chill off the breeze coming through the windows to the the Astronomy classroom. The desks in their usual semi-circle formation, this time with no prop placed upon them despite the temptation to do so based on the topic of today's discussion. Professor Flamsteed is leaning against his desk with Pebbles sitting on the desk to his right.

Did you remember to use the lint roller on the small table outside of the classroom? It was there next to the sign that reads, "Not to be used as a brush for your hair" and has the signature of a former student in the bottom right corner.

So come on in and find a seat, class will begin shortly.
Lesson Progression
question one :: why shouldn't you wish on shooting stars?
question two :: can you define one of these terms?
activity :: meteorite hunt!
OOC: Please be sure you are familiar with Professor Flamsteed's rules BEFORE you post in this lesson. We will know if you haven't read them! All SnitchSeeker site rules apply.

Woooow. Genny was leaning on her desk, hand serving as a head holder as her mouth stretched wide open from the weight of her big head. She was learning a lot today, so a falling star is not a star but a burning rock? What a harsh truth about something who looked so beautiful and hopeful.

Her eyes went from student to student as they gave their knowledge of those terms that she HEARD of but couldn't, for the life of her, define any of them. "I'm very interested in knowing what a star is!" She raised her hand, quite excited for someone whose knowledge in Astronomy was that of a fish in flying. Also being quiet ALL lesson was not something she could manage without at least two bags of candy in her bag.

See? Professor FlameOn can follow his train of thought! Therefore his answer was so right. Crickets, donkeys and all!

But oh next discussion got the Curly Top even more eager, seeing the first word on that list "METROID!!" he exclaimed as he raised-pointed his hand at the board "That is such a COOL video game. Totally retro, but fuuuuuun! You get to wear this battle suit that looks like a cross between a football uniform and an astronaut suit. But orange! And then you have a hand cannon on your arm! You get to shoot things up like that floating jellyfish with fangs and they suck out the life outta yah! sllluuurrrrrpppppp"

Clearly, this is a boy that needs to read things twice.

Kitty didn't mind Flamsteed not answering her thoughts on wishing upon a star, he nodded anyway and didn't seem to disagree. Now they were moving on to the next question. She raised her hand when it was her turn. "An asteroid," Kitty began, sitting up straight. "Is a giant rock floating through space. They are sort of classified as planets but often they are not shaped in the same way and are much smaller than average planets. Most asteroids in this solar system can be found in the Asteroid Belt, in between Mars and Jupiter. I think some of them might have small plants growing deep inside them but that's just my theory."

Skylar sat listening dutifully to the lesson began, which seemed to start with a bit of a review as to some basic definitions. Most of the terms - no all of the terms had already been defined by the time the first year had figured out one to define, which meant she could just continue to sit there or she could elaborate on one of the terms, adding to it.

Recalling a classic muggle movie she'd seen ages ago, Sky opted for the latter. "I thought the stars represented our great ancestors of the past, watching over us...." Sky mumbled upon raising her hand. Okay, that sounded really lame, even if it was kind of nice to believe that there were people watching over them like guardian angels...

Nope.

Everyone was defining stuff and Brian was just a smidge bored and he'd just lay here on his desk for a little while until the lesson progressed to something he could actually answer. But then, there was a question he wanted to ask too. So he supposed that answering questions wouldn't be all that bad. Just this one.

Hand up. "A comet is a ball of dust and gas orbiting a point in the galaxy, which ignites as it comes close to the sun." Yeah. "How come they don't melt, professor? If it's a ball of dust and ice, and it's catching fire, why is it still around eighty years later to catch fire again?" Obviously, he was talking about Hayley's comet, but it was an easy example and illustrated his point.

Airey gave the grounds a quick cursory look out a nearby window. Hopefully no nifflers would decide to start collecting things. This was a rare opportunity and it WOULD just be the man’s luck that some furry creature ruined it.

At least it wouldn’t be felines though?

That...was certainly not the sort of answer he was expecting right off the bat...but alright then.

Chuckling to himself, the Astronomy professor pinched the bridge of his nose and shook his head. “While I am incredibly impressed that you know of that game, Mr. Salander, not exactly the answer I was looking for.

The hillside stargazing she got to do at home didn't require her to know the difference between a constellation and a shooting star. Not that she didn't know the difference, of course. Stars shouldn't have to have thought, just beauty. Not wanting to embarrass herself further, Arielle sat quietly in her seat and listened to the answers given for the terms Professor Flamsteed had written on the board. She wouldn't get the right answer anyway.

That revelation was not so surprising, he supposed. Really, he expected nothing less from these... classmates, who all seemed incredibly determined to deny logic and fact.

While he waited for class to move on, Daxton turned his attention to his hands. Or, more specifically, drawing on them. Taking his pen, he worked on adorning his knuckles, fingers, and hands with skulls and crowns and tiny little birds, as a means to pass the time while he listened to Airey Flamsteed assure everyone that he was not discouraging wishes or dreams. Really, none of that was of any consequence to Daxton.

The next time he looked up, there were words on the board, and at once Daxton flipped open his notebook. Abandoning the artwork on his own hands for the time being, he got to work instead writing down a definition for each of the terms from memory.

SPOILER!!: Notebook
Astronomy

Meteoroid
A body of rock or raw metal that travels through outer space. If a meteoroid enters the Earth's atmosphere and begins the process of burning up, it ceases to be a meteoroid and becomes a meteor.

Meteor
The name of the phenomenon wherein a fragment of matter (usually a meteoroid or asteroid) from outer space enters the Earth's atmosphere and, at the high speeds it travels, begins to burn up and disintegrate, leaving what appears to be a trail of light in its wake.

Meteorite
A fragment of matter from outer space (usually a meteoroid or asteroid) that has entered the Earth's gravitational field, travelled through its atmosphere and survived the process or burning up, making it to the surface of the planet.

Comet
A celestial body made up of ice and dust that traverses outer space. Can be observed with a 'light tail' when it passes near the sun.

Asteroid
A rocky body orbiting the sun, technically classed as minor planets. Many reside in the Asteroid Belt between Mars and Jupiter, and have a regular orbit. It is possible for asteroids to hit Earth, as their orbits bring them close enough for a collision.

Star
Essentially a ball of burning gas, formed when a gaseous nebula collapses in on itself. Main 'ingredients' are hydrogen and helium. A star burns using nuclear fusion, and new elements are formed from stars, also during the process of nuclear fusion, when the existing elements are fused together; every existing element is or has been formed from the nuclear fusion in a star. Though stars appear from Earth to be at a fixed point in the sky, they too are moving (though not in the manner of a 'shooting star' (meteor)) as they orbit around the central point in their galaxy. Stars are also immense in size, though their size varies throughout their life cycle.

Once he was done, Daxton stopped, leaned back from his notebook to look things over, before quickly leaning over it and resting his arms over his writing to prevent any other students from snooping.

Not surprised by Mr. Prince’s silence, and what was written on his paper receiving an approving nod as he passed, the silence of Miss Lestrange was a bit surprising. Mostly because of the expression she wore on her face and lack of response to his qualifying inquiry.

Oops? Encouraging smile?

……….er….side step to the next raised hand it was then.
SPOILER!!: comet people!

...and then there was a second question. She could probably answer this one.

STAR. She'd talked about a STAR.

No, no, no! A COMET! She was settling for comet, and to seal that deal, she raised her hand. "Hmm...a comet, professor! Let's see...picture a snowball. Only, picture it being all dirty and nasty and icky instead of pretty and white. This is basically what a comet is," she explained. "It's got ice in the center, which sounds kind of cool, but then it's also mixed with carbon dioxide and a few other things--like dust! The Sun ends up warming the ice, and it pretty much goes POOF! Then as the comet gets closer and closer to the Sun, the gas starts to get hotter and hotter and hotter until one day, it just separates and forms this tail! So what you end up with is a dirty snowball with vaporized ice and a tail of wandering gas. Pretty cool, huh?"

BREATHHEEEE. *GASP*

He thought back to the chapter on stars in his astronomy book as he listened to some of his classmates' answers. Most of the good ones were taken now, but he had to say something or Professor Flamsteed might think he wasn't paying attention. He raised his hand. "A comet is basically a big ball of ice, dust, and rock that orbits around the sun," he said. "The long tail that we see here on Earth is made of jets of gas."

Obviously, he was talking about Hayley's comet, but it was an easy example and illustrated his point.

Nodding his head in approval at both Miss Greingoth and Mr Jones’ responses and offering them both a thumbs up for basic premise, he really should have known that Mr. Woods would ask a pointed question eventually.

But first, just to reiterate definitions…

Excellent,” he nodded. “A comet is essentially a ball of ice and rock made up from the beginning of the solar system. As a comet approaches the Sun, the heat and radiation produced by it produce a wind called the Solar Wind and when a comet gets close it begins to melt. Then then spews dust and gas that then ignites and this is what produces the tail that comets are famous for.

He paused for a moment to allow for note taking and for his enchanted piece of chalk to finish writing down his definition verbatim on the board.

To answer your question, Mr.Woods, to which I believe you are specifically thinking of Hayley’s Comet, each time a comet such as that one makes its orbit around the Sun, the ice that makes up the comet is cold enough that sunlight and solar wind particles cause it to sublimate - otherwise known as change from solid to gas directly without the transition through a liquid phase first - directly into the vacuum of space. Each time this happens, the overall size of the comet decreases and will eventually evaporate over many passes by the Sun. Someday, this will be the fate of Hayley’s Comet as well. Although it is more likely that the Sun will become a red giant before this occurs.

SPOILER!!: you’re a star!

He didn't even hear the first question asked but he tried to catch some of the responses. Shooting stars aren't actually shooting, they're falling. Interesting. Then they shouldn't be called shooting stars they should be called falling stars. Who had named them that anyway? Who had been the first person to see a shooting - er, falling -star? Had they made a wish? Why was that a thing? Who was the first one to do that? If it didn't even work then why did people start doing it in the first place?

Right, focus. He stared really hard at Flamsteed as he asked the next question. Oh, he just had to define one of those things. He could do that. Star. That was easy. Olly raised his hand. "A star is a ball of gas. When you draw one on a paper it has five sides but that's not what they really look like. You also usually color them yellow but their color depends on what stage of life they're in." That was all the information he knew about stars. He couldn't name any of the stages or anything like that. He just knew that at one point they were red giants. So obviously at that point they were red.

Hattie smiled, listening to some of her classmates answers. She wasn't sure of some of the words, but she knew a few. Smiling, she raised her hand. "Sir. A star is a big ball of gas, and I believe it is held together by it's own form of gravity. There are lots in the sky, but the closest one to us is the sun, which I think is why it appears bigger than most of the stars we see at night"

Offering both Mr. Thomas-Borzekowski and Miss Paton thumbs of of approval, Airey was just about to go into a bit of a recap when he saw another raised hand. Once that hopefully had to do with stars since that was the topic on his mind.

Sweet solstice would you look at that luck? Completely coincidential as well.

Get your quill ready, Miss Tate,” he winked.

To expand on what your classmates already said,” he then announced to the overall classroom. “A star is massive, bright, sphere of very hot gas called plasma which is held together by its own gravity and radiates energy that produces the light we see from earth by means of nuclear fusion. This process takes place in the core of a star and is hydrogen fusing, or burning, to make helium. And, as pointed out, they come in a variety of colors depending on the temperature of a star. Think of it like the coals in your fireplaces back in your common rooms. Just as a glowing red-hot coal is cooler than a white-hot coal, for example, so a red star is cooler than a white star, and a white star is cooler than a blue star. Our Sun is an average sized yellowish star. Stars which are smaller than our Sun are reddish and larger stars are blue.

Get it? Got it? Good.

Now really, what WAS the topic for today?

However, now they were defining some celestial objects. Vivian tried to keep her pace and basically her handwriting while taking down notes didn't look that pleasing to the eye anymore. She made a mental note to rewrite them once she had the spare time to do so.

After scribbling the last bit about meteoriods, Vivian raised her hand for her turn. "I'll go with asteroids, Professor," she said. She didn't want to repeat one that was mentioned before. Oh yeah, she was competitive. Came from Edmund's Gryffindor nature, obviously. "They're composed of basically rocks and they orbit around the Sun too. They also... uh, gather together in some sort of belt. Asteroid belt, I guess. Name says it all. Oh, and they also tend to come SWOOSHING near the Earth! Like this..." The Slytherin raised her hand and made a downward movement with it, like an asteroid when it entered the Earth's sphere. "WHOOOOOOOSH! Like that!"

The girl bounced on her seat and nodded along and BEAMED. She was right, right?

A lot of people were choosing the same words and she wanted to go a little differently. She chose to talk about asteroids instead. Raising her hand, she said, "asteroids are rocks that revolve around the sun and are too small to be called planets. They can form belts where you have a bunch of them all together and they have hit earth and will continue to do so." Soooo yep. That was a little bit of information and there wasn't much else that she could say about them.

Well...that was...er...certainly a spirited little demonstration of an asteroid from Miss Fairfield now, wasn’t it. Despite it leaving the professor to simply...blink at the first year.

Er...right then.

Nods all around, however, to her along with Miss Darcy and Miss Valentine for their responses. Although plant theories would...politely be ignored for the time being.

Excellent. Asteroids, as mentioned, are small, airless rocky worlds revolving around the sun that are too small to be called planets - meaning that the total mass of an asteroid is smaller than that of our Moon - and do not have enough gravity to pull themselves into the shape of a ball. The majority of asteroids in our Solar System lie in a vast ring between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.

And that was really all they needed to know about asteroids for now. They were not the main focus of today’s discussion anyway...but what came neeeeeeeext...well...that truly got the astronomer’s blood pumping.

SPOILER!!: meteoriods!

"Meteoroids are small bits of rock that fly about in space... like, mostly pebble-sized bits-" He held up his hand, fingers indicating their smallness. "-but sometimes they can get pretty big. Like 'as long as your arm is' big. But not as big as asteroids are. And they stop being meteoroids when they get into the atmosphere, I think."

Yep. That was right....wasn't it?

Two thumbs up went to Mr. Song and Miss Darcy for their answers.

Good good good,” he nodded approvingly. “In a nutshell, a meteoroid is a small rock or particle of debris in our solar system. They range in size from dust to approximately 10 metres in diameter. Larger objects that fall into this category are usually referred to as asteroids. Meteoroids orbit our Sun just like asteroids and planets.” He gave a little knowing tap to the tip of his nose. “Interesting to note is that a small percentage of meteoroids fly on a path that goes into the Earth’s atmosphere and then right back out again,” he explained, taking a small page from Miss Fairfield’s book and using his arm to demonstrate the “SWOOSH”. “And these are known as Earth grazing fireballs.

After all of these years she had learned how to deal with activities in Professor Flamsteed's class, including when to wear protective safety gear, when to hide in the corner, and when to run from the room and hope that nobody would die. She had been through some seriously scary things in this class.

Define one of the terms? She could do that. This was really basic stuff. "A meteor is the light that we can see from a meteoroid that has entered Earth's atmosphere and is burning. Any pieces of the meteoroid that don't burn up and reach Earth's surface are meteorites." Was that more than one? All of the terms were connected, so it was necessary to explain all three to understand each of the terms. It was important to know the differences between meteoroids, meteors, and meteorites. All three were distinctly different, but connected. Penelope wrote down definitions for each of the terms in her notes.

Astronomy

Why is it naive and illogical to wish on shooting stars?
-Shooting stars are meteors
-In Greek myths shooting stars are seen as the gods looking down upon the Earth
-Meteors are burning meteoroids and have no power to grant wishes
-There is no scientific evidence to support wishing on shooting stars

METEOROID - Small rocky body in space orbiting the sun. Smaller than an asteroid.

METEOR - A meteoroid burning in Earth's atmosphere

METEORITE - A meteoroid that did not completely burn up in Earth's atmosphere and has reached Earth's surface.

Comet - Frozen gases and rock orbiting the sun. Has a visible dust tail.

Asteroid - A large rocky body in space in orbit around the sun. Larger than a meteoroid. Smaller than a planet.

Janelle raised her hand and jumped into her answer, trying not to be too repetitive. "When a meteoroid or asteroid comes into the earth's atmosphere, it gets super hot. All of the little pieces that break off and leave a trail of light........those would be meteors. Yep, that was her answer and she was sticking to it.

Grinning at the two Ravenclaw ladies (although Miss Wright HAD gone and defined all three essentially), he gave a quick glance towards Mr. Song who had alluded to this term in his own answer. “Stellar. When a meteoroid, or a space rock if you will, enters a Earth's atmosphere, it becomes a meteor. The meteor heats up and makes the air around it glow and what we see from earth is a streak of light across the night sky. The majority of these burn up in the earth’s atmosphere. It is speculated that some 10,000 tons of meteors fall on the Earth each day, although the majority of those are no larger than a speck of dust.
SPOILER!!: meteorites!

So it doesn't get burned up, but actually manages to get through and hit the ground." She said with a nod as she looked down at her notes again and started to write down the other answers that she heard.

Aaaaaaaaand they had finally reached the end of the big three vocabulary words he wished to go over this lesson before jumping right into a bit of a scavengar hunt. Heh.

Very good,” he nodded towards Miss Kennedy. Just needed to clarify a bit of language before moving on. “A meteorite is a meteor that makes it all the way to ground without burning up in the earth’s atmosphere and range in size from tiny pebbles to boulders. Meteorites that are observed as they fall through the Earth’s atmosphere and later recovered are called ‘falls’, all others are called ‘finds’. To this date there have been approximately 1500 collected ‘falls’ and 40700 ‘finds’*. Today, you will be given the opportunity to add to this grand total.”

* as of February 2016 these numbers are 1000 collected ‘falls’ and 40000 ‘finds’
but since our RP takes place in 2090 it is reasonable to assume MANY more have been observed and collected.
This is purely a SS canon number and should not be taken as RL fact <3

Grinning from ear to ear, the astronomer left the blackboard with all its filled in definitions and strolled triumphantly towards the center circle of desks. He did, however, give a little swish of his want to conjure up a little illustration beside the the M's of space rocks to help illustrate their differences to anyone who was confused.

source: wikipedia

Unbeknownst to the majority of you, as you slept there was a meteor shower last night. While, as mentioned, the majority of these bits of space rock did burn up in the earth’s atmosphere, my sources have told me that a fair few were lucky enough to make their way down to earth and...become meteorites right here on Hogwarts soil.” They lived in a world where giant squid talked and magic was commonplace, was it really THAT hard to believe? “I will give you all about…” he paused to check his sundial watch. “...about half an hour to search the ground and find a meteorite. ONE each. These will be yours to keep and I will have an additional extra credit project involving them for those of you who are interested.” The man honestly could NOT stop grinning right now and was practically jumping in place - it was more like giddy bouncing, to be honest. “So, every up and out of your seats. You may leave your bags here as you will not need them while roaming the grounds. These space rocks ought not to be much larger than…” he glanced over his shoulder at Pebbles with a knowing grin. “...than Pebbles here. If you have any questions about this before you, please stay behind and ask them before heading out. Otherwise…YOU MAY BEGIN!

CUE DRAMATIC ARM GESTURES TOWARDS THE DOOR TO THE CLASSROOM! GO GO GOOOOOOOOO!

And watching you, Mr. Prince. Don’t do it again.
OOC instructions:
There are approximately 40 meteorites that have fallen somewhere on the Hogwarts grounds. There meteorites are hidden in actual posts as is represented by this image:

You will find meteorites in the following threads:
The Courtyard
The Pathways
The Great Lake
The Playground
The Whomping Willow

Your task is to go looking through the threads on the Hogwarts grounds until you stumble upon a post containing this image. When you do, you are to quote the post () and post that quote (by copy pasting) along with the location and post number in THIS THREAD with your character finding it on the grounds and returning to the classroom with their meteorite in hand.

So, for example, this would look like:
Quote:
Airey walked along the pathways keeping a keen eye out for anything otherworldly...and then he saw IT!

Pathways, post #1
You only need to find ONE such post. This is not a race. There is no special reward for being the first student to IC find and collect a meteorite and return to the classroom. I will be keeping track of posts to make sure that no two people claim the same meteorite. When this does happen, Airey will IC inform your student that they have brought back something else and you will need to go find another post, so do be sure to check back in this thread and try not to find a repeat! But if you do, it’s okay <3

I will give at least 48 hours for this activity so people in all timezones have a chance.

Please feel free to direct any questions to me via PM or VM.

Thank you all again for your patience and participation <333

Naturally, ANY activity quickly grabbed the attention of Vivian. Once they were allowed to go hunting, the Slytherin immediately bolted up from her seat and ran!skipped towards the grounds. And also quite naturally as well, she ended up in the Playground for obvious reasons. After that pretend-play with Sir Oliver last year, she believed herself to be a QUEEN in her playground palace. Ahem, bow down. Puh-lease.

Once she reached her castle, she immediately climbed up the monkey bars and STARED at the ground. That... looked like a horribly chiseled rock. Mhm, nope. She spent a good two or so minutes on top before finally jumping off and finding her very own meteorite!

Rula reached the playground and, pleased to see that the swings weren't all taken, she seated herself in the first one. Not that that many people wanted to swing when it was cold outside. But hopefully someone would stop by! The more the merrier.

After picking it up, the blonde ran back to the Castle as fast as her short and tiny legs could handle. The stairs part was tricky, but whatever. She was so excited about her find. When she reached the classroom, Vivian BEAMED at Professor Flamsteed and brandished her newly-found meteorite rock in the air!

Oh yeah, she was a WINNER.

As Professor Flamsteed went about defining all of the space terms, Janelle made sure to add each definition to her notes. Why couldn't she pay attention in any class without thinking about OWL's? She was happy to know that her definition had been correct. However, Janelle had no time to bask in the correct answer glory.

It was activity time and.........they were going on a meteorite hunt. Any activity that got one out of the classroom was a good one. Janelle didn't waste any time. As soon as the instructions had been given, she was out of her chair and heading for the door. The big question was, where should she look first?

Class activities were always fun and especially so when they involved scavenger hunts for things like meteorites. Added bonus in the fact that they could keep the objects and do a extra credit project with them. Even if space wasn't really her THING, Esme definitely thought that working with a rock from space was pretty darn cool.

Not sure where she wanted to head, she decided to let her feet take her wherever they wanted to go. Apparently said place was the great lake. Not only was it one of her favourite places at the school but there were lots of places nearby where a meteorite could be located. She began combing the land right by the shore and wasn't having much luck. Probably better to move father back... About to give up, she spotted something further along the shore. Just what she needed!

Which she was thwarted on by the previous Head Boy. She hadn't really visited it all that much after.

And yet it was one of the places she was gonna miss the most when it seemed like she'd never see Hogwarts again. This year she was gonna spend more time at the lake, with Asher. And with Thomas, her magical camera, so she could have pictures of it to remember forever. Both were with her today. Asher on her shoulder and Thomas in her messenger bag, next to her secret journal of ideas that only she could open thanks to Penny.

Only, Hadley wasn't the only one who had the idea of visiting the lake. "Hey Abs..." It was Abby, right? Hads was fairly sure of that. She sat down next to her older house mate, without checking to see if it was okay first. "What's up?"

Holding her very own meteorite was rather surreal and Esme was quite excited as she rushed back to the classroom BEAMING and showing Professor Flamsteed what she had done.

What an accomplishment.

Janelle finally decided to search for the meteorite in one of her favorite places at Hogwarts........The Great Lake. This may not have been the best choice because the place was so large. The chances of her finding anything had to be smaller, but maybe there would be more meteorites to choose from here.........maybe.

She walked along the edge of the lake, momentarily distracted by the sheer beauty of the place. "Focus.", Janelle said to herself. She didn't have very long to find her prize and she had to account for the time it would take to get back to the castle. Moving inward, away from the water, Janelle looked in the grass and behind trees. She had to find the meteorite, she just had to.

Janelle walked around for what seemed like forever and at last she saw something hidden behind a tree trunk. Moving closer, Janelle looked at the object. Could this be it? She bent down, picked it up and turned the object over in her hand. After a very close inspection, Janelle decided that this was what she had been looking for. It was the meteorite all right. This was not your typical Hogwarts rock. Clutching the space rock in her hand, Janelle headed toward the castle.

When Janelle reached the classroom burst through the doorway and then took a moment to catch her breath. Addressing the professor she said, "I'm back. I got one." Satisfied that she had completed the task, Janelle took her meteorite and sat down.

They got to go and look for a meteor in the grounds. That was so cool. They got to keep them too, which was even cooler. She knew that her older sister was going to be so jealous that Hattie had a bit of space rock, and she didn't. She'd have to make sure to mention it in her next owl to her. Hattie bounced on her seat as the professor explained what they had to do. She was excited. Could they go yet? Could they go yet?

And they could! And she was off, out the door. Time to find this meteor. She headed to the court yards yet, figuring that some must of landed there. She looked around, before finding one! "Yaay" she beamed, as she bent down and picked it up! Now back to the astronomy Tower!

Boyyy. Was that a long climb. After taking a rest, Hattie headed into the Astronomy classroom, carefully holding her bit of space rock in her hand. Beaming at the Professor as she walked in, she motioned to the space rock, before returning to her seat. She was one happy first year.

Ready her quill? Why? OH! Genny snatched the quill, a bit flaily, and started writing down what a star was. Except, she only got a few words on the parchment because her mind was distracted by the definition Professor Flamsteed was providing them. It was too intense and attractive a definition of a star for her to focus on writing it down-- no, she was picturing it in her mind. It sounded like something a Gryffindor would definitely appreciate.

Anyway! They were going to play a game! Eep. Genny packed her things quickly without attending to her parchments and eventually getting them all wrinkled and torn into her bag. As soon as Flammy explained everything to them, the second year stumbled from behind her desk and dashed towards the Grounds. Her mouth drew an unattractive shape of a too wide grin as she found herself looking around in the Pathways with all the green and trees here and there.

Slowing her running down a little more, the tiny redhead looked over her shoulder to see the new Muggle Studies professor running behind her. Smiling, she shook her head. ”Of course not.” she told her with a smile as she picked her pace back up to a decent speed. Though, she forgot that her ‘decent’ speed, probably didn’t match the speed of most runners.

”I’m Marsha.” She told her. Partly to be polite, partly because she hadn’t met her yet anyway. She ran up an incline, loving the cross-country feel she always got when running the grounds.

"I FOUND IT. MINE!" She shouted as soon as her eyes set on the meteorite. It wasn't as difficult as she thought would be, but wait a second... what if.. she approached the rock slowly, crouched and knocked on it a few times. When it didn't transform into any camouflaged creature, she was satisfied and grabbed the rock. Genny reached the castle in an unprecedented time, her legs were unleashed up the staircases with her ponytail gradually falling from the rubber band she carefully fixed this morning.

By the time she reached the class again, she was panting with lots of stray hairs poking out of her ponytail. With a grin, she placed the first meteorite on the table.

Azura moved up out of her chair and nodded at the Professor's instructions.. Go find a meteorite.. Got it!

Now she knew why they had to have the lesson in the daytime! She hurried down to the grounds as she looked around for the space rock.. She could see other kids heading in different directions and she moved towards the Whomping willow.. No one else was out here yet!

She looked around before.. Ohh! Hey look! Was that one?

She liked to watch it twitch and shiver from time to time. Gave her just enough distraction from her studying that it didn't get boring.

So that's where Noelle was now. The whomping Willow.
She was perched on a blanket facing the tree. Chico and Weazel were both running around her and playing. She'd cast an invisible barrier so they couldn't get close to the tree. But they never seemed to get too far from her whenever she took them out.

Finally, getting stumped on a Herbology question, she closed her book and stretched. Looking around, she saw Hads. Weazels god-mom!! Hads had give Noelle Weazel whenever she had found out that Noelle hd lost Mute whenever she had been taken. Weazel was by her side, along with Chico, most everywhere now.

"Come on guys, let's go see Hads." Leaving her books in a pile, Noelle vanished the barrier and made her way over to Hads. Weazel touched her hand first. Chico just burrowed into his hedgehog ball. The shy little nut. "Hey Hads!" Noelle greeted with a smile. She sat beside her. "Thank youfor Weazel. He's... Amazing." Noelle blurted out.

Azura picked it up and then slowly made her way back up to the classroom..

Huff huff.. Pant pant.. Wheeze wheeze..

Fwoopers! The stairs!!!

Azura groaned as she settled back into her chair and tried to breathe.. Whose brilliant idea was it to put stairs everywhere?

"Got it.. Professor Flamsteed. " The teen wheezed out as she sat the rock on her desk..

*pant pant*

Ohhhh, they were going to go find meteorites for themselves?! That was so cool! Jaemin had never been one for rocks, because plants were his area of expertise and plants did not grow from rocks, but this sounded like FUN. Space rocks were much cooler than regular old earth rocks, after all. The small Slytherin grinned excitedly and hopped out of his seat, making sure his wand was in his pocket (just in case!) before taking off out the door. He had GROUNDS to search! The playground first, because... well, if he didn't find a rock, at least he could have some fun. Idly rattling the chains of the swings as he hurried by them, Jaemin examined the ground all about. There weren't TOO MANY rocks about here, because... well it was a playground. Kids could get hurt if there were a bunch of-

Something wasn't right.

.... But then again... Was anything ever right in this place? Let's be real. The answer is no. Never. And with that he gave the twins another firm nod and turned on his heel to head back from the direction he came. This time, he'd have to make a small detour.

Oh my Merlin, that had to be it. It looked the right size, and the right colours, and it had shiny bits and seemed a bit out of place amongst all the equipment that stood mostly unused for now due to the cold. The Slytherin teen snatched it up and ran back to the school.

Pushing it close to the time limit that Airey had set for them, Jaemin finally made his way back to the Astronomy classroom, clutching a rock slightly larger than his fist with both of his hands. It had been hard to find, but... he'd found it. A bit tuckered by all the running about and the stair-climbing, he nonetheless made a beeline for the front of the room and held up the rock for Airey to look at.

"It's a meteorite, right? Not just a regular rock?" He was fairly certain it was a meteorite. It was TOO PRETTY to be a boring earth rock.

Generally speaking, Daxton was not the sort of person who gave away his thoughts or feelings very often. For the most part, it was very difficult to guess or decipher what he might be thinking or feeling unless he provided such information - and even then, it was difficult to know just how credible that information was.

Most of the time, however, certain micro-expressions gave plenty away... at least to those who knew what they were looking for. For instance, the mention of meteorites, of collecting them, paired with the look that Airey Flamsteed kept casting at his own stupid little rock, had Daxton deadpanning just that bit more than usual, enough for the well-trained eye to notice the difference, at least. Airey Flamsteed and his stupid enthusiasm for rocks... it was like he was taunting him. Daxton was bitter, he was ticked off.

Naturally, the second that they were all dismissed to go searching in the grounds, Daxton had quickly darted out of the door, with his schoolbag, and without any intention of returning.

...

But Daxton did return. He had made it to his usual hide-out in the castle when an idea had suddenly struck him. It was not a masterstroke, nor a particularly grand idea in any sense of the word, but it was perfectly petty and Daxton-esque. Instantly, he had retraced his steps and returned to the Astronomy classroom.

Before stepping through the door, however, Daxton glanced at the small table on the way in out of habit, and saw... the lint roller? He paused, stopping dead in his tracks, staring at the lint roller with no small amount of confusion. He had definitely... picked that up earlier. Or had he? Daxton quickly checked his bag and saw that... yes, he had already stolen the lint roller, and he did still have it. So, where had the new one come from? Did they perhaps magically replenish themselves somehow, in case they were stolen or lost? Daxton would not put it past Airey Flamsteed to set up such a precaution.

For the second time that day, Daxton swiped the lint roller from the table. This time, after shoving it into his bag, he paused and stared at the table for another moment or two, waiting for a new lint roller to magically appear. Nothing happened, and so Daxton continued on into the classroom... but not before stopping at the doorway and glancing back at the table again.

... Still nothing. Okay... Strange.

Taking his seat again, Daxton looked towards Airey Flamsteed, expecting that the professor might be allowing himself a private celebration that his usually troublesome and frequently absconding student had actually returned, despite having every opportunity to disappear. Then, reaching into his bag, Daxton pulled out the lint roller he had just taken from the table, and the original that he had stolen before class had started, and set them side by side on the desk, flaunting his crime(s).

Curious, these lint-roller-shaped meteorites. Such an interesting phenomenon.

Penelope had seen some of the meteors last night. There were some really great views out the large windows of Ravenclaw tower. She had even taken notes in her astronomy notebook. Although being up to watch the meteor shower last night meant that she was tired today, it was worth the lack of sleep to witness the meteor shower. Now they would get a chance to find the meteorites that were left over from last night's meteor shower. Maybe she would find a meteorite that was from one of the meteors she had seen. Dragging her pet rock Luna on a purple leash behind her, Penelope set off to search for a meteorite. Thunk. Thunk. Thunk. Luna dragged along. On her way out, Penelope dropped a page of notes with her observations of the previous night's meteor shower, including some sketches of where in the sky the meteors had been and what time she had seen them, on Professor Flamsteed's desk.

As she passed the table where the lint roller had been, Penelope noticed that the lint roller, her lint roller, was missing. A quick check of the floor revealed that it had not rolled off the table. It had probably been stolen. She suspected Daxton, who was one of the top four suspects on her list of possible suspects for pranks and stolen items. Nifflers had also made it onto the list after recent events, but lint rollers were not shiny enough for nifflers and she hadn't seen any today. She'd have to look in to that.

But 'love at first sniff' it was almost as ridiculous as the garb Paul wore to the welcome feast. lol. "He's just being friendly," Paul had an extensive imagination. And terrible sense in fashion. "What happened to your other dog?" Not that James cared about Paul's personal life, but honestly wasn't there another one here last year?

Penelope was walking outside by the lake with her pet rock Luna when she noticed an interesting rock on the ground. It didn't look like any of the rocks that were usually found around here. It must be one of the meteorites. Maybe it would be a good pet rock companion for Luna. The Grey Lady's pet rock, Aquila, would have to stay at Hogwarts, so it seemed fitting to find a new companion for Luna. Penelope picked up the meteorite and turned around, heading back to the castle.

When she walked back into the room with Luna dragging along and meteorite in hand, Penelope headed back to her desk. She couldn't help but notice the lint rollers on Daxton's desk. One of them was the one that she had left on the table earlier. "Collecting lint rollers, Daxton?" Penelope pulled out another lint roller with her name written on the handle from her pocket and dropped it on the desk in front of Daxton. She knew he wasn't going to say anything, but she was curious as to how he would react.

Except, that wasn’t keeping her from taking advantage of the current circumstances.

She had acknowledged Hagan’s little head nudge by lightly scratching between his ears, even as she had returned the small grin that the cat’s owner had given her. “Just going for a walk,” she said with a shrug. There wasn’t any reason to come up with some elaborate answer when the reality was so simple. Besides, she had no reason to lie. It was Hady, and in all honesty she figured that people would say her problem was in being too honest. At least, she usually reacted to people exactly how she felt, with a few exceptions.

Toni plopped down in her chair with a satisfied grin on her face. Her mother had been right, Hogwarts was amazing. She'd been wanting to take a closer look at the Whomping Willow but hadn't had time until now. Ilvermorny never had anything like that tree!

She gently placed the space rock on her desk and awaited the professors instructions.

Whoa, they were going to look for meteorites? Awesome! Any activity that involved wandering around the grounds instead of sitting cooped up in a classroom was a-okay with Fiyero. He listened to Professor Flamsteed saying that meteorites shouldn't be much bigger than Pebbles, and he suddenly wondered if Pebbles herself was a meteorite. He'd have to remember to ask Professor Flamsteed later;right now he had a mission and hurried out the door.

"Then let us depart!" he declared as his massive legs began charging forward away from the lake.

Fiyero decided to check the area around the Great Lake first, but he soon found that finding a meteorite was a lot harder than he thought. Every time he thought he found one, it turned out to be just a boring old Earth rock. Were all the meoeorites taken already? He was about to give up and look somewhere else when he spotted a particularly small and lumpy rock. That was it, right? He quickly pocketed the space rock and dashed back toward the castle.

He was huffing and puffing by the time he made it back to Professor Flamsteed's classroom. "I think I... found one!" he panted, triumphantly holding up the rock he'd found before collapsing in a heap into his chair.

Now this sounded like something Olly could do. It involved going out and doing things instead of sitting and just learning. Perfect! He jumped up from his desk and made his way outside with the rest of the class. He tried not to go where everyone else was going but there were so many of them of course there were clumps everywhere. In the end he decided to check out the playground first. Anything hiding under the swings or behind the monkey bars? He searched and searched and searched and then he spotted something.

He hoped that someone he knew might wander by. Hopefully someone like Ellery or Noelle or Phillip.

The first place Olly went was to the monkey bars. He swung himself from one side to the other a couple of times. To be honest it was starting to hurt his hands. So instead he managed to hoist himself up so he was sitting on top of the monkey bars. There. Now he could pretend he was taller than everyone.

Olly picked up the small rock and hoped it really was a meteorite and not just a rock. But it didn't look like a regular rock so he felt good about his find. Olly held it tightly in his hands and made his way back to the Astronomy tower. There were a lot of stairs between the grounds and the tower so he didn't exactly get back quickly. And he was definitely out of breath by the time he returned. Olly just hoped he was still within their given hour. It looked like there were still several people not yet back so it was probably okay.

Not quite what the Professor had in mind? Well leave it to Tenacius Salander to expaaaaand yooouuurrrr miiiiinndddd *cue psychedelic music*

So apparently they were talking about rocks. Space rocks. The kind that was literally out-of-this-world rockin and rollin. Did that mean they be lookin for ALIENS too? Oh he IS gonna be METROID today! Lets go!

His classmates was now everywhere combing the grounds. Where to start though? For some reason Tenacius legs led him to that which swishes and swoops. The Whomping Willow. "Ey there Willow!" he hollered cheerfully at the scraggly old tree "Have you seen any--"

CREEEEAAKKKKWHOMP!!!!!

Whoah! Did that tree just tried to squish him into jelly??

The impact of branch to ground threw him off a good couple feet away, and likely everything else within the same radius. "What'd I say??--" the Curly Top hollered confused when the Willow went for him again and slapped another angry branch against the ground. This time he saw it coming and braced himself, crouched low on the ground, grasping whatever he could to keep himself from flying backwards again.

Sure he managed to keep himself from going airborne, but everything else filled the air and as gravity would have it, turned these things into projectiles. Tenacius scurried further away from the tree, but not before being loved tapped by something oddly shaped and somewhat heavy.

"Owwww..." he whimpered as he nursed his aching shoulder. He swooped to collect the rock that just hit him and was fully intending to send it hurtling back at the mean ol scraggy Willow when he realized-- "Whoah......" this is a pretty rock. Didn’t look like it was something the Earth spat out. Even magic Hogwarts soil. Was it this? "Imma get back to you someday Willow! You and I need to talk." That was as much a peace offering as it was a threat.

The Willow angrily swooped its creaky branches in the air as it watched the boy scamper off. If it could talk, it would tell him that maybe the little runt ought to have a talk with his cretin of a dad first.....

She first spotted a tree. A violent one at that. Its branches were swinging in the air unnaturally. This obviously wasn't the winds doing. Another thing that interested her was seeing none other than the headmaster there. Walking up to the man, Bec showed no sign of being nervous. Why would she be? And opened up her small bag to take out a package of gummy worms. She could get the Headmaster on her good side with this for if she ever gotten in trouble. She doubted it but one could never know. "Gummy worm, Headmaster?" she asked, holding up the package while chewing on one herself.

And now back to the Astronomy tower. Tenacius plopped the strange rock on his desk "I hope this is what you're looking for Professor, because I had to make like Hercules fighting the Hydra for that thing." Not quite accurate but hey it was quite a task.

Despite the fact that she mentioned both lint rollers and his name, it took a moment for Daxton to really process that the Head Girl was talking to him. Generally speaking, he did not have much time for the other students at school, and the feeling seemed to be mutual.

The Head Girl, though. Daxton automatically disliked her, just as he automatically disliked any student with a badge, any student who was given some form of authority (note: authority that Daxton refused to recognise). He cast his eyes towards her, raising his eyebrows the slightest amount as she produced a third lint roller.

That suggested that it had been the Head Girl who had replaced the original stolen lint roller, considering she was the type to carry them around with her. But that was also illogical; who would carry two around with them? Carrying one was ridiculous enough. However, a look at the handle of both lint rollers told Daxton that it had been her, considering her name was written - identically - on both the second and the third.

Mentally scoffing, but showing no such outward emotion, Daxton took hold of the lint roller that Wright had just dropped in front of him - pinching the end of the handle between his finger and thumb - and carelessly tossed it aside towards the open window, leaving the other two on the desk. Acting like nothing had happened, he turned his attention back to Airey Flamsteed, the shadow of a smirk playing about the corner of his mouth.

Ooh a scavenger hunt! Kitty could hardly contain her excitement as the classroom emptied and everyone began heading out to the grounds. Would she be able to tell the difference between a meteorite and a rock? Kitty's idea of meteorites was that they were rounder than normal rocks. Beyond that her knowledge was rather limited.

She made her way towards the lake. It was out in the open so she thought she would have more chances of finding something. On the way, she stopped by the pathways. There were several rocks and sticks all over the place but no meteorites. She did find a very pretty blueish rock partly dug into the ground, this she removed and put inside her pocket. Nearby there were other students looking for meteorites but Kitty walked right past them.

Kitty arrived at the lake. She was distracted by the minows swimming in the shallow end of the lake. They darted to and fro, their silver bodies flashing in the light of the golden sun. Kitty wondered if there were any water worms in the lake.

Then she saw it. Halfway buried in the shallow water was a very small, round gray rock. Kitty curiously picked it up and rolled it over in her hands. She examined the rocks nearby where she had found it to see if there were any more just like it. If there were then it was probably just a normal rock. But no, all the rocks nearby were of a reddish color and they were shaped differently.

"I think I found one!" Kitty exclaimed with delight before hurrying back to the lesson.

Dressed in a light coat, she made her way across the grounds and towards the water. It was fairly deserted at this time which was a shame because company always made her feel better, but Esme supposed that alone time was also important. At any rate it was nice just to be outside.

Picking up a small stone, she skipped it across the water.

"Hey Professor, I think I found one!" she brought her meteorite to Flamsteed and showed it to him. "It was in the lake but right in the shallow part. If the water wasn't so clear I wouldn't have noticed it."

Arielle made her way out of the classroom and down the spiral steps, down the moving staircases, and finally out into the grounds from the oak doors. She made her way down to the Great Lake, because it was her favorite place to go, and she hoped she could find a meteorite, from her favorite place. Because that would be awesome. She wished she would have known about this meteor shower last night, because she so would have snuck out of the dungeons to go see it. Being a Slytherin had its perks, but being underground you can't see anything cool from the common room. As Arielle reached the lake, she began searching away from the other students so she wouldn't pick up a meteorite that was close to their searching grounds. That would be rude. Arielle looked around a little away from shore but didn't see anything. As she got closer to the bank however, she saw a little grey rock sitting right next to the water. She walked over to it, and it looked just like a meteorite!! Arielle excitedly picked it up and hurried back to class, because she was pretty sure she was getting close to her half an hour.

At the Acromantula's reply, the Second Year blinked and looked up. The sky. Clouds. He looked back at the creature and could not help but laugh. "Yes, indeed. My name is Carl, what's yours?" His fear had decreased significantly, more so because it said that it was not going to eat them. He thought he could trust it, after all, it had a sense of humor.

Put the wand down? Carl did not have his wand out. He was merely holding it in his pocket, but maybe that seemed hostile as well, so he took out his hand and let it stay at his side. "I'm not going to draw my wand." He reassured Azura, agreeing that there was no need to provoke the Acromantula.

He listened to the giant spider speak. According to it, strange things were happening in the forest. Just like strange things were happening in the castle. Perhaps there was a correlation between them. "Co-residents, like unicorns?" He blurted out. "Is there a way in which we can help?" Getting the Headmaster was one thing, but he wanted to really contribute in solving the problem.

Arielle proudly held up her meteorite as she walked into class. "I found one! she exclaimed to Professor Flamsteed, and then made her way back to her seat. She was most excited about getting to keep the thing, because how cool would it be to bring home a real meteorite from space to show her brother??? They could even hold it while they stargazed, and wonder where exactly it came from.

A scavenger hunt! Oh this was going to be fun! Juno was really good at finding things! She quickly hopped up and raced to the door. She wasn't sure where she was going to go yet but as soon as she got there she would start searching.

When she finally got to the Courtyard, Juno noticed that no one was really looking here. There was only one other person looking...everyone else must have gone to the more interesting places. So, Juno decided to stay here and look around.

She scavenged for a good long time before noticing something out of the corner of her eye. She turned to her left and saw a lovely little rock, about the same sizes as pebbles was! She ran over and grabbed quickly. "I think, this may be a meteorite," She whispered to herself, grinning. It didn't look like a normal rock at all.

Juno quickly ran back towards the Astronomy tower to make sure her rock was in fact a genuine meteorite!

Juno raced back into the Astronomy room, out of breath but very excited. "I've got one professor!" She did a little jig as she headed towards her seat. She loved activities like this! They were so much fun!

It was actually, dare she say it, kind of nice of Flamsteed to give them a chance to run around the grounds. Not that it made her like the guy, but it was nice. Credit where it was due.

She wanted to hunt in some of the rarer spots, but since that was where the rest of her classmates had scattered, Dot stuck to the main pathway. Wouldn't a meteorite thingy look like a regular old rock? So what if she picked up a random rock and just offered it to Flamsteed and... would he even be able to tell?

Probably. He was a weirdo.

And there was a rock that looked a little too obvious, a little too out of place. So that had to be one. Right? Right.

He'd stayed to the places he knew were the best and safest, and got there as quick as he could.

However. With the passage of the summer, he was pretty sure that it had to be safe now. Who would hang out in the woods for that long, you know? Plus, he was twelve. Totally competent at protecting himself. And he really wanted to see what kind of plants and stuff grew along the paths, because... well. Science. Magic Science, as it were. So the small boy took advantage of a warm, sunny day and made his way out of the castle, immediately heading for a place that looked like it had a good amount of varying stuff in it.

...grass, moss, and a bunch of other things. The small Slytherin squatted down along the edge of the path and hummed to himself as he poked around a bit.

Dot scooped it up and headed back to class. Not in any hurry, though, since obviously they had time to meander and look and maybe look at the clouds and... right. The Astronomy tower was pretty far away, so she ought to put a tiny bit of hustle into it.

Once in the classroom, Dot offered the meteorite to Flamsteed with a flourish. "How did I do?"
